The key was to stay consistent out there and move our way forward. The Camaro was great out there. Put power down extremely well. We were able to go from 21st to first. It was fantastic.

“In the middle of the race, everyone settles in a little bit. I had a good fight with Matt Bell in the No. 9 Stevenson Camaro. We were just a little bit more consistent out there. He drove the tires a little hard so we were able to get by him.  Then it was just kind of smooth sailing the rest of the time. There were a few more yellows but that just played into our favor with fuel strategy. It is all ended up nicely.”

LAWSON ASCHENACH,  NO. 62 MITCHUM MOTORSPORTS CAMARO GS.R, FINISHED 7TH  IN CLASS AND OVERALL: TALK ABOUT THE END OF THE RACE AND THE STRONG TOP-10 FINISH: “We’ll take it. We are very happy considering the work we had to get accomplished yesterday. Everyone did a really good job. The team did awesome and obviously the Chevy Camaro was just awesome. I can’t thank Chevrolet and Mitchum enough for the opportunity.

“Right at the end there, we just couldn’t get it. We had a great car. We couldn’t ask for anything better. The setup was great, the power was great, everything was good, we just had nothing for the BMWs. Hopefully some changes will be made and we will be back on top here real soon.”

ROBERT STOUT, NO. 6 MITCHUM MOTORSPORTS CAMARO GS.R, FINISHED 10TH   IN CLASS AND OVERALL: TALK ABOUT THE START OF THE RACE TODAY: “It my first time here with Mitchum Motorsports; first time in the Camaro here this weekend. A lot different than anything I have ever driven before. It was a lot of fun. Very good good horse-powered car. We went out there with expectations to get into the top-10 and I have personally never run in GRAND-AM and have only had a handful of laps here at Daytona. My qualifying was basically my first full session out on track so I came in here pretty green.

“But overall, it was really good. I had a really good co-driver (Jeff Bucknum) with me. It ended up with a good result. We came out with a top-10. I am really happy and looking forward to Miami.”

JEFF BUCKNUM, NO. 6 MITCHUM MOTORSPORTS CAMARO GS.R, FINISHED 10TH   IN CLASS AND OVERALL: TALK ABOUT YOUR FINISH OUT THERE TODAY: “The race was a very good finish to a rough weekend. I am very pleased with that. We struggled with getting Robert (Stout), the new driver up to speed. I mean he is good, he is talented. We just didn’t get him enough laps to get comfortable. He did a great job just bringing the car back to me in whatever position on the lead lap.

“We weren’t sure what the balance was going to be on the car, it was actually really good. We had  a little clutch problem that made sometimes when we shifted, I would miss a shift, but other than that I think we could have easily contended for, if we had the chance to be up front early on, we had a car that could win a race.

“The yellows, in my situation, because we were coming from the back, I welcomed every yellow we could get because it would close the field back up which we gave me new opportunities to catch and pass people. When it gets all stretched out, of course, you just really can’t catch people, it is too spread out.”

CHRIS MITCHUM, TEAM OWNER, MITCHUM MOTORSPORTS NO. 6 AND NO. 62 CAMARO GS.R: EARLIER TODAY, YOU SAID YOUR TEAMS WOULD BE BETTER IN THE RACE THAN THEY WERE IN QUALIFYING YESTERDAY. SO, OBVIOUSLY, YOU’RE NOT SURPRISED BY TODAY. “No, I’m not surprised. I’m actually quite happy. I’m a little surprised by the pace of some of our competitors, not surprised by our pace. I think we did a very excellent job. Joey (Atterbury) was able to come up from his difficult qualifying spot, all the way up to the lead at one point, so once he got to the lead that’s when we decided to start our strategy and get the car in. We pitted as soon as we could to make the race on fuel, and it worked out perfect. That part of it, and I couldn’t be happier with my driver lineup in both cars, as well as how well they performed. Lawson (Aschenbach) did a great job of bringing it home for us, on that last lap picking up two spots, on the white-flag finish. And Robert Stout, being a rookie, having to start in the back of the GS field, keeping the car clean, keeping it happy, and then we were able to get Jeff Bucknum into the car, and Jeff just kept his head down, we were fighting a little bit of a clutch problem on the 6 car and he was actually able to turn fast-enough times to get up to the tail of the 62, and both of those cars actually drafted their way inside the top 10 and Lawson made a big move at the end. So, I’m not surprised at all by the pace of the cars. Very happy with the teams. It was definitely a recovery for us, but we did exactly what we desire to do: We wanted to finish inside the top 10 and start our championship out with some points, and that’s what we got.”

IN TERMS OF THE CAMARO, HOW DID THE DAY TURN OUT AS FAR AS YOUR EXPECTATIONS? DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING ABOUT THE CAR? “We learned a lot about the car. We had a whole development last year, solely focused to be ready for this year, to try different things. We did learn even more today. There’s obviously all of the development that we had that was in the car, we’ve still got a couple of areas to work on. Right now, it’s a lot of small improvements. We don’t have any big swipes to take. We’re not at the end of the development curve, by any means, but what it takes to be competitive in this series is a whole bunch of small fixes, that are very minor and will add up to something in the end. We think we have something for them in Homestead. I think both cars will be really strong in Homestead.”

JOEY ATTERBURY MADE UP A LOT OF GROUND EARLY. HOW DID HE DO IT? “Joey, actually, was just very good today. Sometimes, when you look at the beginning stints of these races, it depends how hard you’re willing to push and how clean you can do it. And Joey pushed a little harder than everybody else around him. He was able to pass the number 9 Stevenson car – they had a great race going, I’m not sure what they’re failure was – but they are actually instrumental in our finish by helping us with the parts we needed. The biggest highlight, next to our finish, is knowing we have competitors in the field that we’re all looking for the same result.”

 

MATT BELL, NO. 9 STEVENSON CAMARO GS.R, FINISHED 28TH IN CLASS, 54TH OVERALL AS A RESULT OF BROKEN CV AXLE:  WHAT HAPPENED TO PUT THE CAR BACK IN THE GARAGE? “It looks like we’ve got a broken CV, so basically the axle seized up, and eventually it just started slipping. So, John (Edwards) was out there and just couldn’t put any power to the ground.”

YOU RAN UP FRONT WHEN YOU WERE IN THE CAR. “It’s good. The thing about this class, it is very close racing between all of the makes. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get by Joe Foster in the Mustang. Having some issues there. A lot of rough racing, but my job is to bring the car back in one piece. But, unfortunately, an axle broke. I don’t know if it was me or just fate, but it’s unfortunate.”

DID YOU LEARN A LOT ABOUT THE CAMARO TODAY? “We ran the car last year, and it is wholesomely different than it was before. We’ve got a new differential, we’ve got new dampers on the car. We’ve moved weight around a little bit. Also, we do have less fuel and so it sort throws a lot of what we learned last year out the window. We have learned a lot and every weekend we’re learning more.

“This Stevenson crew is amazing, and they’re just taking volumes of information from all of our experiences that we’re learning here – even down to the unfortunate things like a broken CV axle or even some damage to the front end, how that affects our aero. Maybe how we can make a quicker fix, something we can do something like that. I’m excited to go to Homestead and finish out the rest of the year, and see how high up we can go, and I’m sure a win is in the cards for this thing.”

Chad Knuas and Hendrick Motorsports Bring Sports Mentality to Pit Crew Changes

During the Media Tour, Hendrick Motorsports was questioned of what would happen with the pit crews come 2011 after the struggles seen during the 2010 Chase.

[media-credit name=”David Yeazell” align=”alignleft” width=”244″][/media-credit]It was revealed that five-time defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be taking three pit crews to the track each weekend between the two teams. The logic is that it will give them 18 crewmen to draw from if someone gets injured or performance problems are seen.

“We’ve always tried to work on the depth of our crew, but we’ve never been able to successfully pull that off,” Knaus said on Wednesday during the NASCAR Media Tour. “We think we’ve got it going in the right direction. It make take a little bit, let’s be honest, to get everything gelling in the right direction.

“But once it hits it’ll be exciting.”

The pit crew issues were spotlighted during the Texas race in the Chase where Knaus swapped pit crews with Jeff Gordon’s team.

Out of the first seven stops of the day, the No. 48 team had lost spots on four of them, costing their driver valuable time. Once teammate Gordon was wrecked out of the race, the swap was called.

“Ultimately, it was my decision to make the decision as we were getting beat,” Knaus said at the time. “I hope we get back with the 48 guys and get things back on track.”

The No. 48 team ended up using Gordon’s pit crew for the rest of the season on their way to winning the title by 39 points.

At the end of the year, the swap was reversed so therefore Steve Letarte, who was Godon’s crew chief at the time, could bring his team over to work with Earnahrdt in the new season. Knaus said of his team, four members remain in the mix, though nothing has been finalized.

“I can change at any point and time,” Knaus said. “We’ve always had that to a degree, but our backups weren’t necessarily ones that could get it done. I wouldn’t say get it done, but maybe guys on the back end of their career.”

On the other side of the spectrum, the No. 24 team of Gordon and the No. 5 of Mark Martin will have six full-time members per car and another four to share if problems arise.

The mentality that looks to be played out by Hendrick Motorsports is nothing different then what you see in most sports. Every hockey team, basketball team and football team has multiple guys ready to step up to the plate and makes line changes in the middle of the game. This looks to be no different with what Knaus has lined up as he just has created a second-line to swap partway.

HOORAHS AND WAZZUPS: The winds of change were an overall welcome arrival

Over the past few days we witnessed NASCAR’s willingness to address some needed changes with the vast majority of them being positive steps in the right direction. We also learned of a rather unusual pit crew platoon system that somewhat rivals the National Football League’s special teams concept and it appears that there’s another NASCAR baby boom in the making. With those thoughts in mind, let’s begin with:

[media-credit name=”FMCM” align=”alignleft” width=”223″][/media-credit]An overall HOORAH to NASCAR for their willingness to address and implement changes in their championship points system, for the first time since 1975, and their Chase format. While announcing the changes, last Wednesday night, NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France said “the fans tell us that winning matters the most with them, so we’re combining the tradition of consistency in our sport with the excitement that comes along with winning.”

HOORAH to the much simpler championship points system. The race winner will receive 43 points with a one point differential between each position all the way to the last place driver who will receive only one point. The new system also awards three bonus points to the race winner, a single bonus point for leading a lap along with another bonus point for leading the most laps. The max point capability for a race winner is 48 compared to the 42 points the runner up driver will receive. The one point differential could lead to some exciting number scenarios when it comes time to determine the Chase for the Championship line up next September.

By the way, I’m going to assume that no pun was intended regarding the fact that the max points number, 48, matches the car number of five time consecutive champion Jimmie Johnson. Probably not, NASCAR officials aren’t exactly noted for “punning around.”

In terms of simple math, there’s really not a huge differential between the old and new systems other than the fact the new mode will be considerably easier for a fan to calculate the points progress of their favorite driver. Last year we needed a points procedure print out from “NASCAR.Com” and a calculator. This year we won’t even need a pencil to calculate points.

Having said that I do feel a need to issue a somewhat reluctant WAZZUP over the three bonus points awarded to race winners. I would have liked to have seen that figure just slightly higher. It has nothing to do with incentive to win. A modern day Sprint Cup driver really doesn’t require an extra incentive to win. In fact I’ve never actually met a driver, from any form of racing, whose primary goal wasn’t to be the first to pass under the checkers. This opinion is based on the fact that the exceptionally high level of competition in NASCAR these days requires an extraordinary special effort to win a Sprint Cup event and that extra effort deserves additional bonus points.

HOORAH to the wild card provisional NASCAR implemented into their Chase For The Championship format. The top ten in the championship standings, after race number 26, will make the Chase line up business as usual. But Chase positions 11 and 12 will be offered to the two drivers, outside of the top ten, who won the most races as long as they are within the top 20 in the standings. This appears to be part of Brian France’s reference to extra incentive for winning and it has the capability of becoming rather interesting later in the season.

HOORAH for plans to eventually reconfigure the front of the modern day NASCAR stock car so it will again resemble what’s actually on the show room floors. The manufacturer decals on the nose of these cars is often the only means for fans had to quickly determine their origin. This move will also return credence to that long time racing adage that states “win a race on Sunday, sell a car on Monday.”

WAZZUP with the back up pit crew plan at Hendrick Motorsports? This scheme is the handy work of Chad Knaus, the crew chief for Jimmie Johnson’s #48 championship team, that also benefits the HMS #88 team, led by crew chief Steve Letarte, for driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. Following some recent shuffling at HMS, these two teams now share a shop building.

The plan calls for the two teams to travel with three complete pit crews, a total of 18 men, for each race weekend. That will allow crew chiefs Knaus and Letarte the luxury of mixing and matching the crew members they feel they need for each race while covering any pit road emergency such as injury or the frustration of slumping job performance levels. It appears at this juncture that there may not actually be any real permanent crew members for either of these teams.

We all saw how Knaus handles performance emergencies. Remember last fall, in the midst of the Chase event at Texas, when a frustrated and angry Knaus exchanged his #48 crew with Jeff Gordon’s #24 team?

On the other side of the HMS complex Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin’s teams will have full time pit crews consisting of six men each, with four extra men representing their back up plan.

After hearing all this one can’t help but ask: why limit the back up plan to just pit crew members? If Chad Knaus or Steve Letarte makes a pit stop call that transforms their car’s handling from bad to worse then send in the back up chief to man the pit box. This procedure would work similar to a National Football League offensive coach who swaps running backs or receivers to suite the need of a particular moment.

How about a back up public relations team? If for some reason the primary PR unit isn’t properly selling a story to the NASCAR media, then send in the second stringers who can cleverly reword the bullet points of the very same theme.

How about a back up team cook? If for some reason the breakfast, served to the #48 and #88 teams, totally sucks then have the back up cook take over the stoves so he can make things right again just in time for lunch.

(Someone should stop me now-I could do this all day!)

From our GOD BLESS department we urge you to send some thoughts and prayers to NASCAR champion and icon Ned Jarrett who will be taking his rightful place in NASCAR’s Hall Of Fame next May. Some frightening chest pains, late last month, forced a surgical procedure that required a pair of stents to be placed in arteries to open blockages. Jarrett is slowly but surely recovering.

During his career Jarrett was a hard charger that always displayed the spirit of a true racer. That’s what led him to becoming a member of the NASCAR Hall Of Fame’s Class of 2011. Off the track Jarrett is a gentleman, a true class act and one of the nicest people a fan would ever want to have a conversation with. Please get well soon, Mr. Jarrett.

A GOD BLESS also goes out to the families of Roush Fenway Racing drivers Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth all, of whom, recently announced that their wives will be delivering babies later this year. Note to team owner Jack Roush: you may want to check the quality of the water at the Roush Fenway race shops.

That leads to a HOORAH to “Mr. Excitement”, Jimmy Spencer, who, during a Thursday night appearance on SPEED, commented on the Roush Fenway driver’s expectant wives by asking “is there anything that David Ragan isn’t left out of over there?”

On the topic of the NASCAR baby boom, HOORAH to Mrs. Jamie McMurray for telling her husband that he’s not allowed to send text messages on his cell phone while their brand new baby is riding in the car with him. Then again, WAZZUP with sending text messages while driving no matter who’s in the car? Note to Jamie McMurray: when you head west, for the Auto Club Speedway race next March, you need to know that texting and driving out here in California will net you a big time, expensive, traffic ticket.

Finally here’s two HOORAHs for this week’s NASCAR notable quotables. The first goes to DeLana Harvick who sent the following message on “Twitter”: (This) sounds like a bad country song. I’m headed to a town called Welcome,(the official home of Richard Childress Racing), to see a man named Happy, (the official nickname of husband Kevin Harvick).

Then there was the matter of fan favorite Kenny Wallace who wanted to share the good news that his exercise and nutrition program is working and he’s now down to a fit and trim 176 pounds. In a “Tweet” sent on Thursday he wrote: “you know what’s good? When I am on the toilet now, I DO NOT have a little belly hanging over. That’s the s**t! ha ha ha ha !”

ESPN To Air Film on NASCAR Pioneer Wendell Scott in Black History Month

NASCAR, ESPN and Max Siegel Inc., announced today that “Wendell Scott: A Race Story” will air on ESPN in conjunction with Black History Month. The much anticipated film will tell the story of Wendell Scott, the only African-American to win a race in NASCAR’s top series.  

The film airs on ESPN Sunday, Feb. 20, at 9 p.m. ET, just hours after the scheduled running of the 53rd annual Daytona 500.   The docudrama, which was produced by Emmy Award-winning NASCAR Media Group in conjunction with ESPN Films and Max Siegel Inc., will air 50 years after Scott’s first race in NASCAR’s premier series. Scott, one of the sport’s most iconic pioneers who is often referred to as the Jackie Robinson of motorsports, paved the way for minorities and women. Scott’s lasting legacy is credited with helping create the Drive for Diversity program.  

Drive for Diversity is a NASCAR-led initiative aimed at developing and introducing minority and female drivers and crew members to competitive opportunities in the sport. 

“Wendell Scott’s legacy will live on forever as the man who broke NASCAR’s color barrier and whose courage and bravery paved the way for minorities to pursue careers in the world of motorsports,” said Paul Brooks, senior vice president of NASCAR and president of NASCAR Media Group. “This film will help preserve that legacy by telling the story of his historic ride and the positive impact his contributions are still having on the sport today.”  

A recurring thread of the film will be Scott’s lone NASCAR win at Jacksonville Speedway in 1963. Focused on the challenging path Scott was forced to take to pursue his dream of racing, A Race Story combines rare historical footage with dramatic recreations and emotional interviews from members of Scott’s family, racing legends of the past and other key stakeholders in the sport that have been impacted by Scott’s inspirational story.  

“Wendell Scott faced overwhelming challenges throughout his life and as a pioneer in his sport,” said John Dahl, executive producer, ESPN Films. “The film captures his strong sense of determination and honor with a poignant look at his struggles as well as an examination of his legacy.”  

Before Scott raced he drove a taxi in his hometown of Danville , Va. and even ran moonshine to supplement his income. As part of a marketing gimmick, a local track promoter picked Scott to race against a field of white drivers based on a recommendation from the Danville Police who said Scott was one of the hardest guys to catch.

  Through perseverance and determination in the face of discrimination, Scott earned the respect of those fellow drivers as well as NASCAR founder Bill France, who assured Scott he would be treated fairly by the sanctioning body and its competitors.  

In 1961, Scott made his debut in the top tier of NASCAR racing and less than three years later, became the first African-American to win a race in NASCAR’s elite division.   “Wendell Scott’s determination coupled with his bravery is what created that lasting legacy in American motorsports,” said Siegel, executive producer of the film and founder of Revolution Racing. “‘A Race Story’ honors that challenging ride and helps preserve his legacy as the pioneer who allowed minorities today to fully pursue their racing dreams.”  

Revolution Racing exists to provide competitive race cars to further develop the skills and capabilities of all drivers seeking opportunities in one of the world’s most competitive sports.  

“Wendell Scott opened doors for me and so many others just like me,” said Darrell Wallace Jr., Drive for Diversity and Revolution Racing driver. “He’s been a hero of mine for a long time and I’m thrilled he’s being honored and remembered in such a significant manner.”

FORMER NASCAR CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES CHAMPION TRAVIS KVAPIL JOINS RANDY MOSS MOTORSPORTS

Veteran Crew Chief Rick Viers Will Lead the No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs Team  

STATESVILLE, N.C. (January 28, 2011) – Travis Kvapil will join Randy Moss Motorsports to race for his second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship during the 2011 season.  The Janesville, Wis., native will pilot the No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra with veteran crew chief Rick Viers leading the team. 

“I’m excited to be competing with Randy Moss Motorsports and International Truck/Monaco RVs for the 2011 season,” commented Travis Kvapil, driver of the No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra.  “The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is a great series with a lot of tough competition, and I’m excited to be there full-time.  I’ve had a lot of success racing in the [NASCAR Camping World] Truck Series in the past, and I’m looking forward to winning races and contending for the championship.  International Truck and Monaco RVs are great sponsors and supporters and to be able to pair that with a leading competitor like Randy Moss Motorsports makes me very excited to see what we can achieve this season.” 

Kvapil, the 2003 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion, has been a dominant force when racing in the truck series since his 2001 debut.  In 132 starts, the 34-year-old has collected nine wins, four poles and led nearly 900 laps; all while maintaining an average start of 9.4 and an average finish of 9.8.  In his five full seasons of NCWTS competition, the Wisconsin native has never finished outside of the top-10 in the championship point standings.

Daytona Unveils New Mobile Website, Fan Texting Service Returns for Speedweeks 2011

Roush Fenway Racing teammates Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards will appear on ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’

ROUSH Performance Daytona Race Preview

ROUSH Performance gears up for 2011 season opener at Daytona entering two cars  

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – After a solid 2010 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season, Jack Roush Jr., and Billy Johnson are back in action with sights set on the 2011 championship, but this time they will be piloting a brand new No. 61 Ford BOSS 302R Mustang.  The ROUSH Performance team will again add a second car to the stable with drivers Roly Falgueras and new talent Shelby Blackstock who will share the No. 51 Ford Mustang.  

The ROUSH Performance team had an impressive 2010 season finishing in the top five in nine out of 10 races, with six podium finishes and two wins. The team fell just eight points shy of the championship while acquiring the most driver and team laps led, and winning in Homestead; marking team owner Jack Roush Sr.’s 400th victory in racing.

  “The 2010 season was a great year for us,” says Johnson. “There have been a lot of changes in the off season with a new crew chief, Jeff Campey, and most notably our new BOSS 302R.  We learned a lot in both the Homestead and Daytona tests about the car.  It’s quick but we have been working hard to make it last over the long haul like our old FR500C and we are preparing to come to Daytona ready for action.”

In 2009 Jack Roush Jr., finished fifth in the driver points.  In 2010 he finished third in points with co-driver Billy Johnson.  

“If we keep this yearly improvement, we should attain our goals for 2011,” said Roush Jr.   Joining the team and driving the No.51 ROUSH Performance Mustang is Puerto Rican Roly Falgueras and young gun Shelby Blackstock.  Falgueras is returning to Grand-Am GS action after a brief hiatus racing GT cars in South America .  This will be Blackstock’s first Grand-Am start, but after showing speed in both the Skip Barber series and Mustang Challenge cars, as well as a solid performance in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, the up and coming star is surely someone to keep an eye on.  

“I’ve kept track of Shelby for a year now and am looking forward to working with him and seeing what the kid can do,” said team manager Brad Francis. “Roly has been doing this for a while now and is a solid addition to the team.”

“I am very excited to compete in my first Grand-Am race,” said Blackstock. “To be driving for such an historic team like Roush is quite a privilege.”  

While new to the team, Campey is not new to the game.  Having years of experience as a crew chief under his belt ranging from ARCA to NASCAR, he is a great addition to the No.61 program. 

Combining Campey with Francis makes for a strong combination with decades of experience.  

“I love sports car racing and it’s in my blood,” said Campey.  “In fact I first started working for the Roush organization in IMSA before moving over to NASCAR years later.  The team is already proven winners and we have an outstanding driver lineup with Jack Roush Jr., and Billy Johnson.  It’s also an honor to be able to work hand in hand with Brad Francis. 

We also have a great crew who have been working very hard in the off season preparing our new BOSS 302R and I hope to contribute to this effort to make everyone’s hard work into a year-end championship.”

SS Green Light Racing Set for 2011 with Starr

MOORESVILLE, NC – January 28, 2011– Series veteran David Starr will return to the SS Green Light team this February in Daytona, rounding the track in his Zachry No. 81 Toyota Tundra. SS Green Light made a manufacturer switch to Toyota in 2010, as Starr joined the team for the final ten races of the season, finishing with three top-tens and placing ninth in the final driver standings.  

Starr will race with primary sponsorship from longtime supporter, San Antonio-based Zachry Holdings, Inc. for fifteen races in the 2011 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. The team is currently negotiating with several potential sponsors to fill the remaining races in Starr’s 25-race NCWTS schedule.  

“I am honored and blessed to represent such an awesome company as Zachry both on and off the track,” said Starr. “I can’t even explain how excited and enthusiastic I am to unite SS Green Light Racing and Zachry again this season.”  

Jason Miller will call the shots for Starr from atop the No. 81 pit box with the assistance of new team engineer Matt (Slash) Faukner. The trio of Miller, Faulkner and Starr were together for the first half of the 2009 season and collaborated to put Starr in the top-five point standings.

  “We had some great runs and I’m excited to be back together,” Miller said. “I believe we can quickly pick up where we left off and contend for top-five finishes each week.”   Starr feels all the pieces are in place to be a force in the NCWTS this season.  

“I appreciate the dedication that Ken Smith and Bobby Dotter have put into this team,” he said. “They have added key personnel, built new trucks and updated the rest of the fleet to include all Tundra vehicles. Toyota brings so much to the table with their technical and engineering support. I’m excited; it’s going to be a great year.”  

The SS Green Light team has one of the longest tenures in the NCWTS with 245 consecutive starts dating back to 2001. The team is planning to run the No. 07 and No. 81 Toyota Tundra entries this year after running all four manufacturers in various events last season. The team will use Toyota power from Joey Arrington’s REP Engines.  

Bobby Dotter, co-owner of SS Green Light Racing feels the team is well-positioned for a great season.   “We are coming off of our best year ever in the NCWTS. We’ve assembled a great core of talent and we are really happy to have Slash join our team,” he said. “David, Jason and Slash had great chemistry together back in 2009 and we believe we can recreate that again this season. We feel we will have a strong combination to compete for top-fives and get our first win this year.”

    The final day of the annual NASCAR Sprint Media Tour hosted by
Charlotte Motor Speedway kicked off with an announcement from NASCAR.com
that focused on improved services catering to race fans.
    The site’s current Race Buddy and new NASCAR Fantasy Live programs
will feature more detailed data available to NASCAR fans.
    “The changes and additions we are implementing are geared toward
making the NASCAR fan as excited and engaged in the sport as possible,” said
Jason Williams, general manager of NASCAR.com
    “We see NASCAR.com as the 24/7/365 presence of this sport. It’s
always on, and it’s always available. And in some cases, it’s the first
interaction a new fan has with NASCAR. So, we need to consistently deliver
every single product available. It gets them more deeply engaged in the
sport, or maybe even introduces them to something they have never
experienced before.
    “Our redesigned home page will have a lot of new data. Fans can
actually watch it change during the race to reflect the status of the race.
Our Truck Buddy partnership has continued to grow with SPEED. Every (NASCAR
Camping World Truck Series) race will have a Truck Buddy this year. For our
Race View product, it will be absolutely the most in-depth and in control a
fan can get with both the action on track and some of the data.”
    NASCAR.com is also launching the sport’s first fantasy product with
live data through NASCAR Fantasy Live.

comes out of a race. We can utilize the in-race data in a way that engages
fans in real time.”

NHRA To Celebrate 60 Years; Muldowney to Greet Fans at 4-Wide Nationals
    The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) will celebrate its 60th
anniversary in 2011. NASCAR Sprint Media Tour participants visited with
guests from that sanctioning body on Thursday. The panel included NHRA
President Tom Compton, Charlotte Motor Speedway President and General
Manager Marcus Smith, 2010 NHRA Top Fuel Champion Larry Dixon and drag
racing legend Shirley Muldowney.
    “It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since we sat here and
talked about building the Bellagio of drag racing,” Compton said. “At our
awards ceremony last November, we presented Bruton [Smith, chairman of
Speedway Motorsports, Inc. (SMI)] with a ‘Wally’ trophy for what he’s done
for our sport. We’ve never honored a non-driver like that before.”
    Compton said that the NHRA will celebrate its 60th season in 2011
with “an homage to hot rods and our fans.” The celebration will include a
number of special events, such as vintage car shows, cacklefests, tribute
car races, meet-and-greets with legends and displays of the most famous cars
to ever run in NHRA competition.
    “The NHRA Legends program is how we will introduce our young fans to
the glory of the past at races,” said Compton. “Those Legends will
participate in special media events before and during races. A very special
one is the Walk the Track program, where a lucky group of fans will get to
walk the track before final eliminations on Sunday with one of the legends
of our sport.”
    The 60th anniversary celebration will begin in Pomona, Calif., at
the 51st running of the Feb. 24-27 Kragen O’Reilly Auto Parts
Winternationals. At that race, Don “The Snake” Prudhomme will be honored and
a collection of his race cars will be on display in “The Snake Pit.”
    “This year, we have compiled a list of the 60 greatest moments in
NHRA history in chronological order,” said Compton. “We’re going to ask our
fans throughout the season to exercise their expertise and passion to come
up with the ranking of items on this list.”
    Compton said Muldowney is on the list of 60 highlights. This summer
marks the 35th anniversary of her becoming the first woman to win in Top
Fuel in NHRA competition, which she did in Columbus, Ohio, in 1976.
    “It wasn’t as hard as people might think [to be a woman in NHRA]
because NHRA was the first sanctioning body in any sport to accept women as
equal to men,” Muldowney said. “The media supported me from day one. I can’t
even remember a bad experience with any member of the media.”
    Muldowney will be the featured legendary driver at zMAX Dragway’s
NHRA Four-Wide Nationals April 14-17. She will sign autographs and there
will be more than 20 historic race cars on display.
    Dixon turned in a perfect final-round record on his way to becoming
the 2010 champion. He commented on the buildup to the championship.
    “It was certainly more than you can ever expect or imagine,” Dixon
said. “I really didn’t think about it too much until we got to Indianapolis
for the U.S. Nationals. We were nine for nine at that point. I thought,
‘Gosh, if I lose this one, nine out of 10 isn’t bad,’ but I did not want to
lose Indy. We had the best light of the day and took it.
    “My dad raced Top Fuel cars, not on the full tour like Shirley and
Snake and Garlits. Ever since I was a little kid, all I wanted to do was
drive Top Fuel cars. I was in Columbus watching when Shirley won her first
race. I thought, ‘How cool is that? Not have to have a real job?’ That’s
what I was about.”
    A reporter asked Marcus Smith how his father Bruton got involved in
building dragstrips for NHRA competition.
    “He loves cars,” Marcus said. “He loves racing. Jeff Byrd [former
general manager of Bristol Motor Speedway] was probably the reason he got
involved in drag racing – he had all that experience with NHRA. When we
bought Bristol, Byrd said we ought to build a dragway. Dad did it. They
built Thunder Valley. Ever since then, it’s become another love of his in
racing.
    “I grew up in the NASCAR world, but now, it’s fantastic [to be
involved with NHRA]. If you haven’t been there, you have to experience it. I
haven’t been to a cacklefest before, so I’ll have to see one of those.
    “We see the fan base. We see the excitement of the racing. There has
been a lot of growth in the last 10 years. SMI has invested hundreds of
millions of dollars in NHRA.”
    Compton also announced the creation of a limited-edition pewter
version of the Wally trophy that will be awarded during the 60th anniversary
season.

Roush Gives Team Overview for 2011
    Roush Fenway Racing founder and co-owner Jack Roush gave a preview
of the 2011 season and his views on the state of NASCAR during the final day
of the NASCAR Sprint Media Tour.
    Roush noted that 2011 marks the 45th year he has been associated
with Ford Motor Company. He also talked about his team’s relationships with
its sponsors.
    “All of our sponsors agree they continue to see NASCAR as the sport
that’s very important to their marketing efforts,” he said. “They see Roush
Fenway as an organization that’s a terrific investment and for good reason.
For 2011, every Cup program has all new cars built. We have realigned our
engineering department and we have new software to run our programs on.”
    Roush said that the team’s NASCAR Sprint Cup cars are fully funded
for 2011 and that the Nationwide Series entry to be fielded by Carl Edwards
is sponsored for about half of the races.
    “The economy is getting better,” Roush said. “The challenge now is
to bring new partners into the sport.”
Roush was joined on the media tour stop by Roush Fenway Racing’s four NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series drivers: Greg Biffle (No. 16 3M Ford), Carl Edwards (No.
99 Aflac Ford), Matt Kenseth (No. 17 Crown Royal Ford) and David Ragan (No.
6 UPS Ford).

Roush Fenway Racing Taking Green Initiative To Heart
    Roush Fenway Racing is becoming more environmentally friendly.
According to new team President Steve Newmark, the company has already
started enjoying a cost and energy savings and reducing the amount of waste
generated by all the race teams.
    In 2010, Roush Fenway Racing recycled 96 percent of the race cars it
used during NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series events. The organization
also recycled 200,000 pounds of steel, 66 tons of waste and reduced energy
consumption by using new lighting. Roush  Fenway Racing is also not burning
any fuel to heat its shops, as the company has incorporated a solar panel
system that heats the floors of their buildings.
    Company founder and co-owner Jack Roush hopes that the “green”
efforts will encourage others to follow their lead.
    “We want to lead by example,” said Roush. “What we are doing is only
a small part in the scheme of things but we hope to change the culture and
make for more awareness for energy reduction and recycling. In 2011 our
initiative is for air cleaning. We have replaced our paint system with a
water based system. There will be no fluorocarbons going into the air. We
will also have a no-idling policy for our employees in starting their cars.
It’s a small impact, but we are getting the message out. We are reducing our
operating costs.”

Ford Racing Presents Special Award to Kennedy
    The Ford Motor Company presented the Spirit of Ford Award to Kevin
Kennedy, director of Ford Racing public affairs for PCGCampbell, during the
NASCAR Sprint Media Tour visit to Roush Fenway Racing.
    The presentation marked just the 25th time in the 110 year history
of Ford that the award had been given out.     Previous winners include
Jack Roush; NASCAR’s Bill France Sr. and Bill France Jr.; and racing legends
Mario Andretti, John Force and Richard Petty.
    Kennedy was moved by the honor.
    “I am humbled by this award because of all of those who have won it
before,” he said. “I am really blessed that I have been surrounding by great
PR people in my career at PCGCampbell. We work as a team and this is as much
theirs as it is mine.  It’s an honor to represent the Ford Motor Company.”

AFLAC Russ Catlin Award Winners Announced
    In a ceremony held Thursday during the NASCAR Sprint Media Tour
visit to Roush Fenway Racing, five motorsports journalists received the Russ
Catlin Award during the 26th annual Aflac Motorsports Journalism Awards of
Excellence presentation.
    The awards represent excellence in journalism covering motorsports
and are named in honor of former newspaper writer Catlin, who was one of the
first writers to cover NASCAR racing.
    The Indiana School of Journalism judged the entries in five
categories. Each award winner received a trophy and a $1,000 scholarship in
their names to the schools of their choice.
    The award recipients were: Daily News – Nate Ryan of USA Today;
Other News – Chris Johnson of NASCAR Illustrated; National Broadcasting –
Lauren Stovall of ESPN; Local Broadcasting – Brian Kessler of Fox News in
Denver, Colo.; and Photo-Journalism – Marl Rebilis of US PRESSWIRE.

Joe Gibbs Racing Celebrates 20 Years in NASCAR with Special Guests
    The NASCAR Sprint Media Tour stopped at Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) for a
presentation celebrating that team’s 20-year history in NASCAR competition.
    “Twenty years ago,” JGR owner Joe Gibbs said, “we had 16 employees
working in a small leased building. Today, we have more than 400. This is a
good time for us. We’ve had two of our most important sponsors re-up in the
middle of this financial situation. We’re also adding a Nationwide team this
year.”
    Gibbs introduced Jimmy Makar, his team’s first crew chief and
current vice president of racing operations. The former Washington Redskins
coach described Makar as the architect who helped build his team.
    “People ask me all the time why I went to work for a football coach
who had never owned a race team,” Makar said.     “At the time, their driver,
Dale Jarrett, had never won a race. I was leaving a team owned by one of the
most successful guys in NASCAR, Roger Penske, and their driver, Rusty
Wallace, who had a championship and many wins.
    “We bought a bunch of stuff from Rick Hendrick so we could get
started. We had to design, find, and build a race shop. We had a few things
working against us, but we got it together quickly.”
Gibbs’ first driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series was Jarrett, who brought
the team its first Daytona 500 victory. Jarrett appeared at the Media Tour
stop by video.
    “What a day that was in 1993 at the Daytona 500,” he said, “bringing
Joe Gibbs and Jimmy Makar their first and my first Daytona 500 victory. We
started preparing for that victory in 1991 getting ready for the 1992
season. No one envisioned that in a little over a year we would be sitting
in victory lane at Daytona International Speedway. Later, I got a call from
Joe Gibbs telling me before we got to Richmond that he would be quitting his
job as coach of the Washington Redskins. I wasn’t sure if one victory was
enough to make him give up his job. I got letters from a lot of people who
thought it was my idea that he should quit his coaching job.”
    Bobby Labonte drove for JGR from 1995 to 2005, during which time he
won the 2000 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship.
    “What made the team click for that 2000 championship?” Labonte
asked. “A lot of things were responsible, but Jimmy Makar and I were very
tight. That had a lot to do with it.”
    Tony Stewart came on board with JGR in 1997. On Stewart’s reputation
for run-ins with NASCAR, Joe Gibbs said, “There were only a few times that
were a little bit, uh. then, he became an owner and not one ripple. He
doesn’t call Goodyear names, nothing. I wondered, ‘has he had a lobotomy?’
Then, two weeks ago, he came back [referring to Stewart’s well-publicized
altercation in Australia].
    Stewart said, “Hey, I didn’t want you to think I was too far away.”
    The 2011 JGR NASCAR Sprint Cup Series line-up includes Denny Hamlin
(No. 11 FedEx Toyota), Kyle Busch (No. 18 M&M’s Toyota), and Joey Logano
(No. 20 Home Depot Toyota). Brian Scott was recently added to drive a full
season for JGR in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

2011 Miss Sprint Cup Lineup Announced
    Sprint unveiled its 2011 Miss Sprint Cup lineup Wednesday night in
Charlotte, N.C.
    Returning Miss Sprint Cup representatives Paige Duke and Monica
Palumbo were joined by newcomer Kim Coon. The trio was introduced to a crowd
of race fans and motorsports media during the NASCAR Sprint Media Tour at
the popular Whisky River nightclub.
    Duke has returned for a second season. Palumbo is back for a fourth
year.
    In addition to making appearances at charity events and NASCAR
sponsors’ functions, the three Miss Sprint Cup representatives serve as the
“fans’ friend on the inside,” offering behind-the-scenes access through
regular video, photo and text updates to their social media followers on
Twitter, Facebook and the NASCAR.com “Community” page. The Miss Sprint Cup
lineup also greets thousands of race fans each weekend at the Sprint
Experience, the mobile marketing display Sprint brings to every NASCAR
