16TH FOR JASON BOWLES AT KENTUCKY IN THE THRUSH & SON/HI-TECHNOLOGIES NO. 81

“Bowles recovers from pit road penalty to get 14th top-20 finish of the season”

(SPARTA, KENTUCKY) September 24, 2012 – Jason Bowles and his MacDonald Motorsports team were in need of a strong finish, and that is exactly what they got Saturday afternoon in the Kentucky 300. With new partner Thrush & Son Complete Home Improvement and HI-Technologies on the No. 81, Bowles recovered from a pit road penalty to register a 16th place finish.

“The car was pretty good all day and we had a great shot at another top-15 finish,” said Bowles after the race. “Everyone on the crew did a great job and the pit-stops were solid all day as well. I really want to thank the Thrush family for everything this weekend. They run a first class organization and their C.H.I.P. software product is an excellent tool for any home improvement company that wants to save time and money.”

After practicing 17th, Jason qualified the Thrush & Son/HI-Technologies No. 81 23rd on the grid for the race. The car showed speed right away, as Bowles advanced into the top-20 in the opening laps.

On the lap-30 competition caution, crew chief John Monsam made the call for two tires. A great pit-stop moved Bowles up to 14th position for the restart. After the green, Jason continued moving forward, advancing up into 12th spot.

On lap 87, Bowles was making his way onto pit road as Taylor Malsam went spinning through the front stretch grass right behind him. The yellow came out, closing the pits 0.1 seconds before Jason crossed the commitment line, resulting in an End of the Longest Line penalty.

“The pit-road penalty was tough because I was already committed to pit-lane and couldn’t do anything,” explained Bowles. “It put us a lap down and behind for the rest of the race. Luckily I have a great team behind me and we kept pushing for the remainder of the race to get a solid 16th, just what we needed right now.”

Bowles remains 14th in the driver standings following the race weekend and heading into Dover. The MacDonald Motorsports No. 81 sits 22nd in the owner standings with six races remaining on the season.

Next weekend, the MacDonald Motorsports team rolls north to Dover, Delaware for the second time this season. The One Main Financial 200 will go on the air live on ESPN2 at 3:00PM ET.

Denny Time!! Hamlin Dominates at Loudon

[media-credit name=”Noel Lanier” align=”alignright” width=”246″][/media-credit]On a sun splashed Sunday afternoon in Loudon,NH, Denny Hamlin stood on the starting grid looking calm and relaxed. The Sunday previous at Chicagoland Speedway ended in disappointment for the Chesterfield,VA native as he run out of fuel on the last lap relegating him to a 16th place finish. After the race he went as far to guarantee a win at New Hampshire a track where he led a race high 150 laps in July only to come up short and finish 2nd to race winner Kasey Kahne.

Using the misfortune of last Sunday and a race that got away in July as motivation leading into Sunday’s second race of the chase Denny Hamlin looked to reassert himself as a contender for the 2012 championship at the end of the day he would follow through on his guarantee of week before in dominating fashion.

As the green flag flew on the Sylvania 300, Hamlin who had to start 32nd after a poor qualifying effort wasted no time making his way through the field finding himself in the Top 15 before the competition caution at lap 40.

53 laps later on lap 93 Denny would pass his teammate Kyle Busch and take the lead for the first time in the race and would go on to lead a race high 193 laps on the afternoon. As good as Hamlin’s car looked in traffic it was even more dominating in clean air as he would continuously run the fastest laps of the race and was at times two tenths of a second faster than the field.

Electing not to pit on the lap 130 caution, Hamlin was in the window of having to make a green flag pit stop when a well timed caution flew on lap 179 allowing him to pit with the rest of the lead lap cars to maintain crucial track position on one of the series toughest circuits on which to pass.

After another set of green flag pit stops Hamlin’s lead had grown to over 4 seconds over Clint Bowyer and Jimmie Johnson and it looked like Hamlin would continue to stretch the lead until a caution come out with 26 laps to go.

The top 7 cars opted to stay out and not pit before the final restart allowing Hamlin to maintain his position as the race leader. Getting an incredible jump on the restart Hamlin was able to stretch his lead to over 2 seconds on Jimmie Johnson with about 10 laps to go. Hamlin was never challenged coming to the checkers allowing him to cruise to his series leading 5th win of the season and a milestone 100th Sprint Cup Series win for Joe Gibbs Racing since the organization’s inception in 1992. “Our car was just extremely strong all weekend long,” said Hamlin in victory lane after the race. “Obviously we would have swept the weekend as far as number-one’s (practice, qualifying and race) if we didn’t have that blunder in qualifying.”

Car owner Joe Gibbs spoke about the significance of the organization’s 100th cup win after the race. “It was a huge day for us,” “Bobby Labonte (former JGR driver) came in victory circle and congratulated us, I appreciated Bobby. Dale Jarrett, Jimmy Makar, everybody when we first started..Tony (Stewart). It took a lot of people down the road.

After picking up the win at New Hampshire. Hamlin now sits third just 7 points back of leader Jimmie Johnson heading into next week at Dover, a track Hamlin has struggled at in the past scoring only 4 Top 10 finishes in 13 starts to go with an average finish of 20.5 in those starts. Next week could prove to be big as far as the championship hopes of the 11 team and Denny Hamlin are concerned.

Gary McLean wins OSCAAR Modified Velocity 250 Feature at Sunset Speedway

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignright” width=”266″][/media-credit]When it came to the end of the OSCAAR Modified feature at Sunset Speedway, it’d be Gary McLean once again going for victory lane as he did earlier this year at Sunset.

Following qualifying, it’d be Tim Burke starting on the pole, followed by Bill Pearsall, Brent McLean, Gary McLean, Brian McLean, Brandon Crumbie, Monty Kelly, Josh Gruntz, Dave Terry, Adam Adams, Branden Bullen, John Harper, Matt Barton, Chris Burrows and Bill Burrows.

On the opening lap, it’d be Brent McLean and Burke side-by-side for the lead as Pearsall began to fall through the field. Brent McLean would clear Burke for the lead on lap two, followed by Brian McLean.

The first caution would come out at lap four for Monty Kelly going for a spin on the backstretch. Both Barton and Pearsall would make their way down pit road under yellow. So with 26 laps to go, it’d be Brent McLean leading Burke, Brian McLean, Gary McLean, Terry, Gruntz, Harper, Adams, Chris Burrows, Bill Burrows, Bullen, Kelly, Pearsall and Barton.

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignleft” width=”266″][/media-credit]On the restart, Brent McLean would jump ahead of Burke while Brian McLean and Gary McLean battled for third. Gary McLean would clear Brian McLean on lap nine, with Terry clearing Brian McLean on lap 11 for fourth.

The second caution would come out on lap 12 for Brandon Crumbie stopping on track. He’d pull his car into the infield, done for the race, Meanwhile, Bullen would make his way down pit road.

On the restart, Brent McLean would once again jump out to the lead, while Burke and Gary McLean battled for second. Gary McLean would clear Burke for second on lap 14, while Terry ran fourth. On lap 18, Terry would get alongside Burke for third, though the third caution would then come out for Bullen spinning in turn three.

With 12 laps to go, it’d be Brent McLean leading Gary McLean, Burke, Terry, Brian McLean, Gruntz, Kelly, Pearsall, Chris Burrows, Adam Adams and John Harper.

On the restart, it’d be Brent and Gary McLean side-by-side for the lead, with Gary McLean clearing Brent McLean for the lead on lap 19. The[media-credit id=4 align=”alignright” width=”266″][/media-credit] caution would then come out on lap 20 due to smoke from Chris Burrows blowing up.

On the restart, Gary McLean would jump ahead of Brent McLean and Terry while Brian McLean and Burke battled for fourth.

The fifth caution would come out on lap 23 when Bill Burrows and Adams went around for a spin.

On the restart, Gary McLean would jump ahead of the field while Brent McLean and Terry battled for second. There’d then be another caution on lap 25 for Kelly going for a spin.

With five laps to go, it’d be Gary McLean leading Terry, Brent McLean, Brian McLean, Burke, Gruntz, Pearsall, Harper, Adams, Bullen, Kelly and Bill Burrows.

On the restart, it’d be Gary McLean and Terry side-by-side for the lead, with McLean clearing Terry with two laps to go.

Gary McLean would lead the final two laps to take the victory. Dave Terry finished second, followed by Brent McLean, Brian McLean and Tim Burke. Josh Gruntz finished sixth, followed by Bill Pearsall, John Harper, Adam Adams and Monty Kelly. Branden Bullen and Bill Burrows rounded out the field.

Monty Kelly, Tim Burke, Brent McLean and Gary McLean wins heats in OSCAAR Qualifying

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignright” width=”266″][/media-credit]Saturday September 22nd meant qualifying day for the OSCAAR Modifieds for the Velocity 250 feature, which is set to be run on Sunday September 23rd. It was a familiar crowd at the front of the field, winning the races, while some drivers found some trouble.

In the first heat, it’d be Monty Kelly taking the win, ahead of Brad Pearsall, Brent McLean, No. 77, Josh Gruntz, John Harper and Branden Bullen.

In the second heat, there’d be a caution on lap five when Chris Burrows would stop on track. Then on the restart, Bill Burrows would go for a spin. The cautions would not end there as on lap six, Gary McLean would send Dave Terry for a spin while Chris Burrows would stall under caution. In the end, it’d be Tim Burke taking the victory, ahead of Brandon Crumbie, Brian McLean, Gary McLean, Terry and Adam Adams.

In the third heat, Kelly would go for a spin after contact from the 77. It’d be Brent McLean taking the victory, ahead of Gruntz, Pearsall, Kelly, No. 77, Bullen and Harper.

In the fourth and final heat, Gary McLean would take the victory, ahead of Brian McLean, Terry, Burke, Crumbie, Chris Burrows, Adams and Bill Burrows.

The feature for the OSCAAR Modifieds would be set to run on Sunday September 23rd, when they’d be joined by the OSCAAR Super Lates.

Hamlin Wins at New Hampshire- Just Like he Predicated

[media-credit name=”Noel Lanier” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]Earlier this week Denny Hamlin told everyone via Twitter that he would win this week’s Sylvania 300 at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The proclamation came after a disappointing finish in Chicago where he ran out of gas and lost valuable positions in the chase for the Sprint Cup. Hamlin definitely backed up his predication with a dominating win as Jimmie Johnson came in second by almost 3 seconds and pole-sitter Jeff Gordon finished third. With his win Hamlin moved up to third in points only seven points behind the new leader Jimmie Johnson who now leads Brad Keselowski by a single point.  Fellow chase participants Clint Bowyer and Kasey Kahne rounded out the top 5.

Hamlin’s weekend was somewhat disappointing when his qualifying efforts only secured him a 32ndstarting position.  On Sunday he was in the lead by lap 93 of the scheduled 300 lap event. From that point Hamlin dominated the race extending his lead to over six seconds at times. No one really challenged him for the lead although pit strategy did see Hamlin lose the lead in the pits, only to be out front in very short order. He led 193 of 300 laps securing the bonus point for leading the most laps.

“It doesn’t hurt to have a little confidence in the team,” Hamlin said. “I said we were fast enough to make it up, and we were. I’ll have these guys back until I die. Just our team. These are lightning-fast race cars they’re giving me.”  About his prediction he said, “You don’t want to sound too cocky, but I knew what we were capable of. Our car was extremely strong, and I have a really good knack for this race track. The two together, with a crew chief like Darian, it’s a winning combination.”

Jimmie Johnson said in the media center afterwards, “We just did all we could today.  We just missed a little bit of speed and the 11 seemed to have everybody covered.  And after that, we were the next‑best car and I just kind of ran there all day.”

Jeff Gordon in the media center was happy with his results, “Yeah, it was a great performance.  Certainly helped qualifying on the pole, getting that No. 1 pit stall.  That was important.  We had good pit stops, good pit calls and strategy and then good adjustments. We weren’t very good at the start of the race, but we hung in there with our track position and then we made an adjustment about halfway through the race that wasn’t very good for the short runs, but it seemed to maintain pretty good on the longer runs.  So allowed us to get up there into fourth and then that restart, we were able to jump into third.”

The race saw long green flag runs slowed only for a few caution periods all for debris on the race surface. The Sprint Cup Series will be in Dover Delaware next weekend.
