Pole Winner Peters Sidelined By Mid-Race Incident

CONCORD, N.C. (May 22, 2011) — Timothy Peters and the No. 17 GearWrench team brought a brand-new truck to their home track at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The team had two solid practice sessions during the day on Friday, as the afternoon sun rose to its peak, the No. 17 team shined as Peters earned his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series pole of 2011 during his 100th Truck Series start.

Leading the field to the green flag Peters battled to lead the first lap, but settled into the third position until the first caution of the evening waved on lap seven. The team believed it was too early to come to pit road, remaining on the track under the caution period. The race restarted on lap 10 with the No. 17 scored in position number three.

Peters held his position until the second caution of the day came out on lap 20. Crew chief Butch Hylton made the call to remain on the track as the No. 17 team was not within their fuel window. Some of the leaders chose to come to pit road moving Peters to the second position for the restart on lap 24. Peters over took the leader going into turn one only to see the caution wave for the third time on lap 25.

Once again, Peters led the field to the green flag for the restart on lap 31. By lap 37, Peters pulled out to a three truck length advantage over second-place and continued to gain distance on the rest of the field as the laps clicked by. The No. 17 team was nearing their fuel window and began to prepare to come to pit road under green when the caution waved for the fourth time on lap 52. The team brought Peters down to the first pit stall for four tires and fuel. The No. 17 team returned to competition in the sixth position for the restart on lap 58.

Peters quickly picked up three positions running third as he raced side-by-side for position. Peters became extremely aero-loose coming out of turn two forcing the No. 17 truck into the outside wall. The truck sustained major right-side damage. The team brought the machine to the garage area and determined the damage was quite extensive. Repairs were unable to be made in order to return to competition.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series returns to action on June 4, 2011 at Kansas Speedway for the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 which can be viewed live on SPEED at 2:00 p.m., EST.
