Early September is when American garages fill with work that has a deadline attached. Brake lines get inspected, undercoating goes on, and summer tires come off before the first road salt. Every one of those jobs starts the same way: the car has to come off the ground. A scissor car lift does that in a footprint a two-post cannot match, which is why it keeps showing up in home shops and small service bays.
What surprises people who use one for the first time is where the effort actually goes.
The arms start almost flat, and that is the whole problem
A scissor mechanism is a pair of crossed arms driven by a hydraulic cylinder. The cylinder does not push the car upward. It pushes the arms apart horizontally, and the geometry converts that into vertical travel.
Nearly closed, the arms sit almost flat. At that angle, a large horizontal push produces a very small vertical rise, so the cylinder works at its worst mechanical advantage exactly when it has to break the full weight of the car off the ground.
How does a scissor lift work once the arms pass halfway open
The ratio improves as the angle opens. Past halfway, the same cylinder force produces noticeably more lift, which is why the platform seems to speed up near the top.

- Wheels and brakes: full access, comfortable working height
- Exhaust and driveline: reachable, but seated or kneeling

Neither changes the selection order. Decide which jobs the lift serves and how much floor the shop can spare, then let those answers set the height before capacity or price enters the conversation.
