A driver knocked out of Supercars qualifying can still line up when the race starts. The elimination ends their opportunity to advance through qualifying, while the lap time they have already set helps determine their starting position. The Top Ten Shootout settles the front of the grid. Cars outside that group still have places behind it, subject to the eligibility requirements and any changes to the final starting order.
Supercars uses several qualifying formats, so the route into a shootout depends on the event. Its 2026 format guide describes Format 3 as a three-part session, with two knockout stages followed by the Top Ten Shootout. Drivers advance by setting times within the required group at each cutoff. Those who miss out stop qualifying, but their times still help determine the starting order. The session narrows the contest for the leading starting positions.
What the knockout ends
The wording can be confusing because “eliminated” often describes the end of an entire competition. In qualifying, the immediate question is whether a driver can continue setting times in the next part of the session. A car outside the cutoff loses that opportunity. Its earlier effort still has a purpose, since the cars eliminated together must be placed in order on the grid.
In poker, leaving a hand and leaving a tournament also mean different things. A fold gives up a player’s claim to the pot, the chips contested during that hand. Any chips already committed stay there; the rest of the player’s stack remains available for later hands. The remaining players can finish the hand, while the player who folded waits.
Folding a tournament hand at Ignition Australia does not itself eliminate a player who still has chips. Losing the remaining stack can end an entry, although some formats allow a player to replenish it under defined rules. A permitted re-entry begins another entry after elimination. None of those provisions is needed simply to fold and remain in the tournament.
A poker player chooses to fold; a driver misses the next qualifying stage through the timing classification. Neither exit automatically ends participation in the larger competition.
Where the other cars start
Under Supercars’ 2026 Format 3 rules, all cars take part in Q1, the first qualifying stage. The fastest 18 advance. Their times are cleared for the next stage, while the cars left behind take the grid places from 19th onwards, ordered by their Q1 times.
Q2 then reduces those 18 cars to ten. The eight that miss the shootout occupy positions 11 to 18, ordered by their Q2 times. They have finished qualifying, but they have not disappeared from the race.
The ten remaining cars contest the shootout, running from tenth fastest in the preceding session through to the fastest. Each driver completes a warm-up lap before the timed lap, then returns to the pits afterward. The shootout classification determines positions one to ten. Their Q2 ranking sets the running order, rather than guaranteeing the same place on the grid.
The grid is therefore assembled from separate stages.
Q2 times are cleared for the drivers who advance to the shootout, so their earlier pace earns another opportunity without fixing their starting position within the top ten. Drivers eliminated in Q2 are ranked by their Q2 times, even if they went quicker in Q1. Combining everyone’s best laps from the whole session would produce a different kind of classification.
Other formats take a different route. Format 2 sends the fastest ten from Q1 into Q2, while Format 1 uses a single qualifying session, followed by a shootout at the endurance events. The event’s qualifying format therefore needs to be established before interpreting its results.
Missing an advancement cutoff also differs from failing to meet the minimum qualifying lap time. The sporting rules normally prevent a driver outside that time limit from competing further, although the stewards can accept exceptional circumstances. Penalties and withdrawals can also alter the grid.
From a timed lap to a crowded track
Cars are spread across the road in this iRacing race start at Sandown. Later elevated views show the field stretching through a bend, with some cars alongside one another and others following behind. Drivers further back occupy different lines through the same corner, with their available space shaped by the surrounding cars.
The footage shows racing among a field, without establishing how its grid was decided. Each driver begins among particular neighbors. Once those cars are moving together, the order can change, and the space available depends on where everyone else is.
Starting further forward can reduce how much traffic a driver initially faces. Simon Baggus’s racecraft guide connects qualifying position with cleaner air and discusses adapting the racing line when attacking or defending. Admittedly, it is on SIM racing, but it tells us how a starting place shapes those opening circumstances without deciding how the race will finish. The fastest line through an empty corner may become unavailable when another car occupies it. Qualifying establishes the initial order before drivers face those interactions.
On a qualifying results sheet, the stage at which a driver stopped advancing explains which group determines their grid position. A Q2 exit belongs among the cars behind the shootout participants. To establish whether that driver will race, look at the final starting grid, rather than treating the word “eliminated” as confirmation of their absence.
