How did the strategy work out for your top-five finish?
“This place has gotten so interesting over the last couple of years because track position just means so much. There’s a lot of passing going on out there and kind of rooting guys out of the way. It takes lap after lap to kind of get leverage over somebody and make those passes work. In the middle of that race we elected to flip the stage and try to then hopefully back on the strategy to jump them at the end. I really think that’s the right call and the right decision. On the pit box, you have to be really smart with this place and make these decisions because I think trying to get your track position late in this race. You put my car in 28th and it’s hard to get it out of 28th, but when you put it in the top five you finish inside the top five and I finished top five. It shows you how close everyone is in the field and how hard it is to get by guys.”
Seems like veterans had the patience today at Martinsville paid off?
“It does. You can get in a hurry here and get yourself in a lot of bad situations. Even like myself trying to chase the 17 (Corey Day) there at the end, I was trying to pick apart my strengths and weaknesses, and I just couldn’t get off the corner and he could do a lot better than I could. You get in a hurry about rushing the middle of the corner or get off the corner too hard and you end up compounding the mistakes and problems. I did the best I could without really using him up. He’s still in the hunt, so being smart about that and trying to keep those guys in a decent spot and come home with a top five, it’s a good day for our Menards/Lyons GR Supra.”
