AUSTIN DILLON QUOTES:

Are you ready to run 600 miles at Charlotte Motor Speedway? How do you prepare?

“It’s my first time running a 600-mile race. I ran Texas Motor Speedway last year and this year. Both of those races are 500-mile races. Why not give it 100 miles more and see what we’ve got? I think you prepare for the race a little bit earlier in the week. It’s an important hometown race. It’s going to be hot. I feel like you do have to prepare for it as much as you can, but until you get in there in that environment you really don’t know. I’ll do my best early in the week to hydrate.”

Any similarities between Texas Motor Speedway or Kansas Speedway that can transfer over to Charlotte Motor Speedway?

“We try to do a good job of transferring information over from one track to another. Kansas Speedway is so smooth and so new that it’s kind of its own beast right now. We use different tires there. You learn a little bit racing around people, but that’s about it.”

Paul Menard
No. 27 Serta/Menards Chevrolet SS
Event Preview Fact Sheet

This Week’s Serta/Menards Chevrolet at Charlotte Motor Speedway … Paul Menard will pilot chassis No. 454 in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. This No. 27 Chevrolet SS was previously raced at Texas Motor Speedway where Menard finished in the ninth position.

In addition to his 14 Sprint Cup Series starts, Menard has nine NASCAR Nationwide Series starts at CMS. He won the pole award in 2011 and his best finish of third came in 2005. Menard has also led 31 laps in his nine Nationwide Series starts at Charlotte.

Season to-date … Through the first 11 Cup Series races of the 2014 season, Menard has 3,432 of 3,557 laps contested (96.5 percent), led 45 laps and is currently 18th in the driver point standings.

Looking Back … In last year’s 600-mile race, Menard started the No. 27 Chevrolet from the 22nd position and fought an ill-handling race car through the event, ultimately finishing 13th.

PAUL MENARD QUOTES:

What are your thoughts on racing in the Coca-Cola 600?

“The Coca-Cola 600 is definitely one of those races, as a driver, that you want to win. It carries its own prestige like the Brickyard 400 or the Daytona 500. This is also the only time we will race 600 miles, which makes it unique as well. I think we gained knowledge on what we need for this weekend during the (Sprint) Showdown. It will be a long night for me in the car, but once you get going you really don’t notice those extra 100 miles. Our guys have been great on pit road all year, but we will have to make sure and keep up with the adjustments on the Serta/Menards Chevrolet as the track conditions change so much throughout the race.”

RYAN NEWMAN QUOTE:

How do you prepare for the Coca-Cola 600 knowing RCR is the defending race winner?

“To me, the Coca-Cola 600 is like the Southern 500. It is one of the races I haven’t won and it would mean a lot to me to win. Having won at Charlotte in a Nationwide car, as well as the Sprint All-Star Race, I know how to get the job done. Obviously, RCR knows how to get the job done. I was close last year even with a bad restart at the end because we were stuck in the line that wouldn’t go. That’s actually happened to the No. 31 team a couple of times this year. Looking back with all that has happened sixth wasn’t too bad, considering. Hopefully we’ll get a little more luck on our side this go around and have good restarts so we can put the No. 31 Quicken Loans Chevrolet in contention.

“Charlotte is such a fun track. It’s so much different in Turns 1 and 2 versus Turns 3 and 4. Because of that, you have to approach the track a little bit differently. It’s so fast, it’s a place you can’t waste too much time thinking about how you want to approach it.”

BRIAN SCOTT QUOTES:

What are your thoughts on racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway?

“Of course it is always fun. Everybody loves racing in front of the home town. You get the guys from the shop that might not come to a lot of races. There is an atmosphere which everybody really wants to win because you get to celebrate with so many of your guys and so many people that are helping build race cars. It’s always a race track that families like to come to if you are not from the area. My family from Idaho always comes in to town. There seems to always be a lot of added pressure and a desire to perform well in front of so many people.”

Is there anything that you can learn from the Nationwide race that might carry over to your Sprint Cup Series race?   “I love it when I do double duty because I feel like I do learn from the Nationwide Series. I feel like I learn on the tires and the lines and the grooves of the race track. Even little driving tendencies that you can do especially at a place where the tires wear out on how to save tires and be good on the long run. Normally, its balance type things on how you start off and fire off on a restart, to how you are going to be on the long run. I think running a Nationwide race, and the Cup guys that run Nationwide races, then going to the Cup race is a huge benefit.”

BRENDAN GAUGHAN QUOTES:

What have you taken away from Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway that you can bring to Charlotte?

“We are swapping styles up. The team has gone from one style of setup in the past to a completely different one for Texas and it was, in my opinion, the best we have had on a mile and a half. The Texas set up was just a hair better than the one we had at California and Las Vegas, so we are going to stick with that for Charlotte. The more we run it, I think the more we are going to improve at these tracks.”

How much more comfortable is Charlotte weekend, being able to race at home?

“How everyone feels about Charlotte is how I feel about Vegas, but Las Vegas is not as comfortable as Charlotte because Vegas is tough. For me, the Charlotte race is actually a fairly easy weekend. I don’t have all of the demands like when I am back in Vegas with family and friends. When we come to Charlotte, everyone else has it and has to deal with all of that. I actually get to relax, sleep at my own house and take it easy when I roll in to the track.”
