Gary Elliott Racing – Summer Rush Round 1

Race #8

June 1st

OSCAAR had its first of two shows at the big fast Kawartha Speedway, a neat track set in the center of a horse track.   The big oval makes for very fast speeds on the long straights with banked turns.

There were 20 Modified’s set to battle the track and each other through heat race qualifying for the 30 lap feature event. Our car was very fast in hot laps.

After two practice sessions we were very excited about our chances to grab a podium finish in this race.  We started pole in our heat and a good finish there would put us in the first two rows of the feature……but bad luck hit us hard.

Starting inside pole we raced hard with the #91 of Max Beyore. If you look close at the back of our car you will see a grey mist….it’s leaking gas.  We were pouring gas on the track for the first four laps. Running second I got the mechanical black flag and had to pull off the track and out of the race.

We checked the car over after the race and found fuel was leaking from the air vent on the fuel cell.  We thought it may have been a loose or missing fuel cap, but it was the fact we filled the car not knowing it would leak out the air inlet….another lesson learned with our new car.

The pits were busy with lots of cars, but our trailer and crew stuck out among all the teams.  Now we needed to prepare for the 30 lap feature and hope starting 18th of 20 cars would not hurt us. It is so easy to get caught up in a wreck working our way through the pack of fast competitive racers.  We were ready for the challenge.

Heading to the track is always exciting. Starting up front would have been nice in racing you always have to play the hand you’ve been dealt, whether it’s a mechanical issue, bad luck or a mistake by the team.  There is no guarantee even after an awesome hot lap session that things will be good, so we did our best with what we had and where we started on the grid.

The race was trouble for many drivers.  There were a few cautions claiming some cars from the race.

When the dust settled we managed to get ourselves into the top ten finishing 9th.  Our next Modified show is this coming Friday night at Full Throttle Speedway. We are look forward to our return to this facility now under a new hard working management team.
