AUSTIN DILLON QUOTES:

We are heading to Bristol Motor Speedway. Do you enjoy racing there?

“I think every racer loves Bristol Motor Speedway. It’s a fun little bullring. In the spring, the day race pretty much turned into a night race because of the weather and it worked out well for our team. We ended up having a really decent run there, so I have been looking forward to this race for awhile. It’s the type of track where you just have to stay in the race the whole time and fight until the end.”

Paul Menard
No. 27 Serta/Menards Chevrolet SS
Event Preview Fact Sheet

This Week’s Serta / Menards Chevrolet at Bristol Motor Speedway … Paul Menard will pilot chassis No. 466 in the Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. This No. 27 Chevrolet SS was utilized earlier this year at Kansas Speedway and Dover International Speedway where the Richard Childress Racing team finished 17th and 10th, respectively.

Bristol by the numbers … Menard has 14 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts at the high-banked 0.533-mile track. His best start of fourth and finish of fifth both came in March of 2011. The Wisconsin native has completed 6,990 of 7,012 laps attempted (99.7 percent) at BMS.

About Serta … Serta is proud to be the manufacturer of the World’s Best Mattress™. Their commitment to quality has made them a leader in the industry, and they look forward to helping you find the right mattress. Go to www.Serta.com or visit a Serta dealer near you.

Looking Back … Menard and the RCR team started the spring race in the rear of the field after an unapproved change post qualifying in Bristol. After driving through the field, Menard reported a flat tire and was forced to pit under green-flag conditions. The team would battle back from the 33rd position to finish 21st.

PAUL MENARD QUOTE:

Why does the night race at Bristol Motor Speedway seem more intense than the day race?

“Probably because it’s getting close to Chase time and everyone amps it up a notch. The first race is earlier in the year and everybody is trying to figure out where they’re at. Now everyone knows where they’re at and it’s go time. Since the race is at night it adds a whole different element, too.”

Where do you expect the racing groove to be at this time?

“They really haven’t changed the track in a couple of years, so it’s going to be where it was in the last few races. We’re just up by the fence and with the ride-height rule and more aero this year, the cars handle better so you can run lower longer, but as the tires wear and the pace slows down you’ll want to move to the top.”

Ryan Newman

Pick Newman’s Ride … The Quicken Loans “Paint Your Way to Dover” contest is giving race fans the power to select Newman’s No. 31 Quicken Loans Chevrolet paint scheme for the upcoming Sprint Cup Series race at Dover International Speedway on September 28, 2014. Fans can visit QLRacing.com to cast their vote for one of three paint schemes that were selected from a pool of nearly 1,000 designs submitted by fans nationwide. The entrant whose design receives the most votes will win a trip to Dover, Delaware to see their custom paint scheme on track as Newman attempts to tame the “Monster Mile” in September. If Newman finishes first at Dover, the grand prize winner will also receive a prize of one year’s worth of mortgage payments. Also part of the Paint Your Way to Dover contest, Quicken Loans has also partnered with three charities – Autism Speaks, Folds of Honor and the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma – to also take part in the contest. Along with selecting their favorite design, fans visiting QLRacing.com will also be able to select one of the three charities. The nonprofit with the highest vote count will then receive a $10,000 donation from Quicken Loans and the remaining charities will each be awarded $2,500.

RYAN NEWMAN QUOTES:

What are your thoughts on returning to Bristol?

“Bristol is a lot of fun when you are moving forward. It can be miserable when you are just trying to maintain.”

Is it a more mentally or physically taxing track?

“The speeds at Bristol are so much greater than they used to be. It used to be where they would fall off two, three or four seconds a run while fighting forward drive. Now it’s not so much that, so it’s pretty intense both mentally and physically.”

What about the desperation levels of certain teams who are on the outside looking in at making The Chase? Will they be raised during this race?

“You just never know. We had the yellow lights come on with one-to-go last time, so who knows what will happen this time. We’ll just have to wait and see and hope we are one of the cars in the mix to win.”

The Last Great Colosseum Stats … Scott will be making his 11th NASCAR Nationwide Series start this weekend in the Food City 300 presented at BMS. BRIAN SCOTT QUOTES:

How is Bristol different under the lights then when you race there in March?

“It’s a lot different. The grip level changes. It seems like the groove changes a little bit. Tire wears are different. I’m looking forward to getting back to Bristol. I feel like, out of everywhere we’ve been this year, that was probably our worst performance. I felt like we weren’t where we needed to be. So, this weekend we’ll be trying new things. Racing under the lights at Bristol is always fun, it’s just a neat place.

Do you prefer the outside lane?

“Always. It’s tough to make up any ground on the bottom, it’s tough to complete a pass. That’s the frustrating part about Bristol. It seems like we go there and Goodyear always brings a hard tire that just makes it really difficult to grip up on the bottom. You’re defaulted that you’ve got to go to the top to keep momentum up. It’s frustrating when you’re faster than somebody and you’re trying to make it stick on the bottom and get the runs that you need to pass. The top seems to be where you want to be at Bristol.”

Can Bristol be a mentally draining racetrack?

“Yeah, there isn’t much of a straightaway to really catch your breath. That seems to make Bristol more challenging. You’re on the straightaway’s for like a second and then the corners for a couple seconds. It just doesn’t give you much time. It doesn’t give your body too much of a break, you’re just constantly entering and exiting corners and that can make it challenging.”

No. 3 Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Chevrolet Camaro
Event Preview Fact Sheet

This Week’s Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Chevrolet at Bristol Motor Speedway … Ty Dillon will race chassis No. 125 this weekend at The Last Great Colosseum. The 22-year-old driver finished sixth earlier this season in the Drive to Stop Diabetes 300. In 2013, Dillon drove the No. 33 WESCO Chevrolet Camaro to a seventh-place finish.

Grand Celebration … Bass Pro Shops, America’s No. 1 Outdoor Retailer, will be celebrating the opening of its 68th store this week with its new Bristol, Tennessee location. Second time back … Dillon earned a sixth-place finish last time out at Bristol Motor Speedway. He qualified his No. 3 Yuengling Light Lager Chevrolet Camaro ninth and raced around the top-10 for most of the 300-lap event. In the end, crew chief Danny Stockman called for a two-tire pit stop to improve the team’s track position, ultimately allowing Dillon to cross the finish line sixth.

Points update … Dillon remains fourth in the driver point standings, 28 points behind the leader. Also competing for the Sunoco Rookie of the Year award, Dillon is in second place.

Meet Ty Dillon … Ty Dillon, Austin Dillon and Richard Childress are scheduled to be at the Bass Pro Shops grand opening celebration beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Fans who receive a wrist band will have an opportunity to get the trio’s autograph. The new store is located at 1 Bass Pro Drive, Bristol, Tenn.

TY DILLON QUOTE:

What is your approach going back to Bristol Motor Speedway for the second time?

“Bristol is such a neat track, definitely one of our favorites to visit because of the history and the fan support that we get. From a racing stand point, it’s a very technical track and we’ve been gathering a healthy notebook of information. I’ve re-watched some of the past races, spoke with Danny (Stockman, crew chief) and the team and we feel confident about this Friday night’s race.”

CALE CONLEY QUOTES:

What are your expectations heading back to Bristol Motor Speedway for the second time?

“Now that I’m going back for the second time, I already have mental notes prepared of things that I would like to search for in the feel of the car. It’ll be nice, because Bristol will be the first track that I’ve revisited in my Nationwide schedule. If we could unload fairly fast, it’ll be a lot easier to search for a feel that I may have been looking for in my first time around. If we don’t, I now have enough experience to get us where we need to be. At the end of the day, if we could put ourselves in a spot where we could battle out for a top-five it’ll be a big success.”

Bristol is a physically demanding track, how have you changed your workout?

“I haven’t changed my workout much. I’m still training at RCR with Ray Wright, but focusing a lot on shoulders and neck strength, as well as endurance. I’m a small guy and need to be able to handle the Bristol corners.”

BRENDAN GAUGHAN QUOTES:

Is Bristol Motor Speedway different to race under the lights?

“The track itself isn’t different, but the feel of you being at Thunder Valley under the lights just adds a lot of excitement. It is one heck of a race. It is exactly how they market it, a Colosseum. We race like chariots with the spikes coming out. It is not that it is any different, but it is just a fun race.”

How intense is it behind the wheel at Bristol?

“Bristol is much more demanding than many other places. There are a lot more G-forces and many different lines you can run now. It is an extremely physically demanding race track, but that is what makes it so much fun for us.”
