Newport News, VA. April 26, 2011- Two weeks ago weather cut the season opening Late Model feature short after only 10 laps of racing. In that short period of time, Casey took notice quickly that he has a strong car for the 2011 season. After starting sixth; he was running fourth and fast catching the third place car when rain cancelled the night’s event.
The teams return to racing this past Saturday night held much promise and Casey delivered with a third place qualifying effort. For much of the first 65 laps, Casey settled into third place and let the front two run their race while he saved his car for the latter part of the feature.
A caution on lap 64 bunched the field up and set the stage for some very tight racing. Lap 74 was the beginning of the end of his night when he and another racer began racing door to door for the third position with Casey in the bottom groove. This two way battle turned into a three way tussle when another driver pulled up to the rear of him on lap 79. The next three laps were contentious as Casey navigated the turns with pressure from the outside and the rear.
Lap 82 brought the end of Casey’s evening when the outside car made contact with his right front fender resulting in a collision with the outside wall. As a result his brake line split and his car plowed into the other cars that had come to a stop in the turn. The team has been working diligently and their Vinny’s Pizza and Pasta Toyota returned from Creech Motorsports this afternoon after being repaired. The Spring Cup activities scheduled for this weekend will give the team two weeks to regroup and racing will resume on May 7th.
With the weekend behind him Casey states, “I want to thank everybody for their support. We will be back and hopefully next time everyone, including myself will drive a lot smarter. We have a strong car this year and I’m really looking forward to getting back to racing.”
