Foster Drives to Top of Tight Griffis Test at IMS

INDIANAPOLIS (Friday, Oct. 20, 2023) – If the Chris Griffis Memorial Test is any indication, there won’t be much room between the top drivers in INDY NXT by Firestone during the 2024 season.

Veteran Louis Foster was the quickest driver Friday in the all-day test on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, turning a top lap of 1 minute, 14.8432 seconds in the No. 26 Andretti Global car. British driver Foster finished fourth in the series standings as a rookie in 2023, with two victories.

“Hopefully, we can keep our form like last year into 2024,” Foster said. “Looking forward to the rest of the offseason and doing some more testing so we can improve on what we did today.”

Just .1728 of a second separated the top five drivers in the test on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course that incorporates parts of the iconic IMS oval.

Series veteran Jacob Abel was second at 1:14.9201 in the No. 51 Abel Motorsports machine. 2023 USF Pro 2000 champion Myles Rowe was the quickest of the newcomers, third overall at 1:14.9487 in the No. 99 HMD Motorsports car.

2023 INDY NXT by Firestone Rookie of the Year Nolan Siegel was fourth at 1:14.9918 in the No. 39 HMD Motorsports car. Brazilian rookie Caio Collet will be a driver to watch after he rounded out the top five at 1:15.0160 in the No. 18 HMD Motorsports machine. Collet has raced the last three seasons in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, with three victories.

Twenty-one drivers – two more than the full-time grid in 2023 for the growing INDYCAR development series – combined to turn 1,145 laps despite wet track conditions in the morning session. The only major incident occurred in the final 20 minutes of the day when Rowe went off track in Turn 12 and hit the tire barrier near the pit entrance. He was unhurt.

Today’s test is named in memory of Chris Griffis, the team manager of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports who passed away suddenly in September 2011.

The 2024 INDY NXT by Firestone season starts Sunday, March 10 on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida.

HOMESTEAD, FLA. (October 20, 2023) – NASCAR Cup Series driver Todd Gilliland visited the Baptist Health Homestead Hospital today with a two-wheel motorized gift to help benefit the hospital and its patients.

On behalf of Serial 1 Premium E-Bikes, Gilliland donated a BASH/MTN Mountain E-Bike to the Baptists Health Systems’ Grand Gala to be hosted this Saturday night at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The bike will be auctioned off with proceeds directly benefitting the Baptist Health Homestead Hospital and its patients.

While at the hospital, Gilliland toured the facility while offering photos and autographs to patients and staff. The hospital is an official partner of the Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway.

“It’s always humbling to visit a hospital and its staff and patients,” said Gilliland. “I am proud to have a partner such as Serial 1 E-Bikes who wants to give back to the local community. We are grateful to help Baptist Health Homestead Hospital raise some funds through the Serial 1 E-Bike donation today. We hope this will go a long way in helping all the patients at the hospital.”

NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Announces 2024 Schedule

Season to open at New Smyrna Speedway and conclude at Martinsville Speedway for third consecutive year

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 20, 2023) – A week before crowning the 2023 champion at Martinsville Speedway, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour plans to carry on a new schedule tradition by opening mere miles from the birthplace of NASCAR and finishing at one of its most historic tracks as the 16 race dates on the 2024 schedule was announced today.

For the third consecutive year, the Tour will open at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida as part of the track’s “World Series of Asphalt Stock Cars Racing” during NASCAR’s Speedweeks, racing under the lights on Saturday, February 10. The 66th running of the DAYTONA 500 at nearby Daytona International Speedway then takes place a week later to conclude the opening week of NASCAR action.

Martinsville Speedway returned to hosting the Whelen Modified Tour’s season finale in 2022, and will carry on the new tradition for the third consecutive year in 2024. The race on the Virginia short track moves to a weekend date on Saturday, Oct. 26 – opening up a week of camping and activity for fans of the Virginia short track. NASCAR will then set the field for the Championship 4 in all three national series – NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series, NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series – the next weekend, Nov. 1-3.

“We have seen over the past two seasons how exciting it has been for our fans and competitors to open at New Smyrna and finish at Martinsville,” said Jimmy Wilson, Senior Director, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. “The mix of tracks on the schedule pays tribute to the Tour’s roots and sets up a competitive season from start to finish, demonstrated by how once again this year our fans are going to see the Whelen Modified Tour title decided at the finale.”

Richmond Raceway and New Hampshire Motor Speedway return to the schedule as companion events alongside NASCAR national series race weekend. Richmond will remain the second race of the season on Friday, March 29, while New Hampshire holds a mid-summer Saturday, June 22, date.

New Hampshire has hosted a total of 75 Whelen Modified Tour races, led by the late NASCAR Hall of Famer Mike Stefanik’s eight wins. Tony Hirshman is second on the all-time wins list there with seven, while Reggie Ruggiero and Bobby Santos III have each tallied five victories in the heart of New England.

Richmond began hosting Tour races in 1990 and has seen the likes of NASCAR Hall of Famer Mike Stefanik, current NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Preece and three-time Tour champion (and current title contender) Justin Bonsignore visit Victory Lane in their 13 races thus far.

North Wilkesboro Speedway joined the Tour’s schedule for the 2023 season and returns for the second straight year in 2024 on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park (Connecticut) will host a trio of marquee events during the 2024 season, starting off with a Sunday, April 7, event during the 50th Icebreaker Weekend. The Tour will return for a Wednesday night mid-summer classic on Aug. 14, before a third and final visit on Sunday, Oct. 13, during the World Series of Speedway Racing.

Another stalwart on the schedule, Riverhead Raceway, will host a pair of key races for the Whelen Modified Tour, starting with a Saturday, May 18, race in the spring. They will then host a Saturday, September 14, even that will continue to pay tribute to late track owner and team owner Eddie Partridge.

Riverhead stands as track that has been the longest continuous host of the Whelen Modified Tour since coming on board in 1985. Although scheduled to hold a race in 2020, the pandemic prevented the race from taking place.

“It’s important to the Tour to be a part of tentpole events that honor the history of our sport such as those at Thompson and Riverhead,” said Wilson. “And then we also have incredible support from tracks such as Monadnock Speedway, which always provides a great event experience for fans and will continue to do so with a trio of races in 2024.”

Monadnock Speedway in Winchester, New Hampshire, will continue to build upon their schedule of races under JDV Productions, as they are slated for three dates in 2024 – Saturday, May 4; Saturday, July 20; and Saturday, Sept. 21.

“There are so many great tracks in the Northeast that provide exceptional racing and close proximity to home for our teams,” added Wilson. “These tracks, and their fans, are truly at the heart of what is great about Modified racing in the Northeast.”

Those tracks include Lancaster Motorplex (New York) – formerly known as New York International Raceway Park – that returns to the schedule for the third time, and second straight, with a Saturday, August 3, race. The track first appeared on the schedule in 2021.

Seekonk Speedway (Massachusetts) returns to the 2024 schedule with a Saturday, June 1, event and Oswego Speedway (New York) rounds out the schedule with a Saturday, Aug. 31, race.

“We’re proud this year’s schedule provides balance for our competitors and their teams, who themselves are managing jobs and families away from the track each week,” said Wilson. “And our fans will still continue to see the high-quality and exciting Whelen Modified Tour racing action they have come to love at their favorite facilities.”

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour concludes the 2023 season on Thursday, Oct. 26, in the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 200 at Martinsville Speedway, where the Tour will crown a champion. Ron Silk and Justin Bonsignore have battled atop the standings all season, and enter the race separated by 13 points for the title. Silk, the 2011 champion, holds the lead over three-time champion (2018, 2020, 2021) Bonsignore.

Riding Momentum Kade Brown Returns to Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour Aiming for Victory

HUDSON, N.C.: Fresh off an impressive victory this past weekend at Orange County (N.C.) Speedway in the prestigious Orange Blossom Shootout, teenage phenomenon Kade Brown returns to the Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour looking to keep his momentum rolling in Saturday night’s Blue Ridge 250 at Tri-County (N.C.) Motor Speedway.

Rewinding a week, the recently crowned Hickory Motor Speedway Late Model champion added another trophy and checkered flag to his collection at Orange County.

Brown took advantage of a strong race car and maximized patience throughout the race to find himself in a side-by-side battle for the win, with Brown edging ahead and winning the $17,500 purse by 0.042 seconds.

The young gun hopes to continue his winning ways outside Granite Falls and deliver his first career CARS Tour triumph.

“We had the best race car by a long shot, but at a place like Orange County, it’s so hard to make a pass work,” Brown recalled his performance in the Orange Blossom Shootout.

”I definitely learned a lot for future races, and I am excited to see what the rest of the 2023 racing season has in store for myself and my Matt Piercy Racing team.”

With the penultimate Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour race on deck this weekend, Brown wants to continue to earn the respect of his competitors – while turning heads in the grandstands and the garage.

Finishing 11th in the August running of the Grand Atlantic Resort Old North State at Tri-County, Brown returns to the legendary short track looking to capitalize on his summer performance while battling the best in Late Model Stock competition.

“I really feel like you have to treat Tri-County a lot like Orange County,” explained Brown. “The tracks have similar characteristics where tire conservation is pivotal to success and patience is a premium. As we dive deeper and deeper into the CARS Tour season, the competition is fierce, and everyone wants to end the season on a high note, us included.

“I learned a lot in August and plan to utilize that experience from this summer, plus take the knowledge I’ve been able to inhale throughout the year and lay it all on the table on Saturday night.”

It has been a relatively good month for Brown.

Before focusing on the Orange Blossom Shootout, Brown was one of over 80 entries for the historic ValleyStar Credit Union 300 last month at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

With continued confidence and support from his Matt Piercy Racing team and mentoring from former NASCAR driver Damon Lusk, Brown embraced his inaugural running in the nation’s biggest, richest, and most prestigious NASCAR Late Model Stock Car race by delivering a strong seventh-place finish and an entire notebook.

With the racing season winding down, Brown looks to continue a strong trajectory and maintain his recent successes, including a respectable 12th-place CARS Tour result at South Boston (Va.) Speedway earlier this month.

“The competition in the CARS Tour is no joke,” added Brown. “Every CARS Tour race, we strive to fight for the win – like every other team, but at this point in my racing career, coming away from the race track with a solid finish and the car in one piece is a bonus.

“We came close to a CARS Tour victory in July at Hickory Motor Speedway with a second-place finish, and I’d love nothing more than to have an opportunity to challenge for the win either this weekend at Tri-County or in a couple of weeks at Caraway.”

ValAsta, Carolina Driveline, Race City Steel and Puryear Tank Lines will be the primary partners on Brown’s No. 23 Chevrolet for the 125-lap race.

“Without my partners, I realize that Tri-County and the 2023 season would not be possible,” explained Brown. “This season has been a lot of fun with all the trips to Victory Lane, but without the support of ValAsta, Carolina Driveline, Race City Steel and Puryear Tank Lines, I realize none of it would be possible.

“There is no better way to thank them than by just putting our team in a position to bring home another checkered flag.”

Sharing the track with the two CARS Tour divisions for the Blue Ridge 250 will be the GXS Street Stock Series, which previously ran with the PLM Tour at Tri-County Motor Speedway back in May. Gary Ledbetter took home a checkered flag in the series’ inaugural event.

AUSTIN, Texas (October 20, 2023) – GMG Racing brings its biggest IMSA Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America entry of the season to the 2023 series finale this weekend at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) where America’s premier single-make Porsche series will be a featured support race for the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. The Saturday and Sunday 40-minute Carrera Cup sprint races on the 3.4-mile COTA Grand Prix circuit will see GMG field a trio of 992 Carrera Cup entries to close out the team’s 2023 professional racing season on a high note.

Longtime GMG driver Kyle Washington will be looking to continue a recent run of podium success in Porsche single-make series competition in the Pro-Am class in his No. 32 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Blake McDonald runs with GMG Racing for the second-straight Carrera Cup weekend after a strong series debut last month at Rennsport Reunion in the No. 11 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

In more than a month of nearly non-stop competition starting in early September, Washington and GMG Racing have run a packed mix of both IMSA Carrera Cup Pro-Am and multiple 992 and 991 races in the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America series. The hectic schedule of 10 races on a pair of race weekends at both Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca produced an amazing run of nine podium showings and counting for Washington and GMG heading to COTA.

“Kyle runs flat out in a full schedule of racing all of the time and I have been very impressed with his recent pace and performance,” said GMG Racing Founder and Principal James Sofronas. “He is literally jumping from 992 Carrera Cup cars to 991 Porsches and then back to 992 Sprint Challenge cars and not missing a beat. In fact, if he wouldn’t been taken out by another competitor in the second Carrera Cup race at Rennsport Reunion, Kyle would be a perfect 10-for-10 in Porsche series podiums over the last month or so. He has never driven better and I only see it improving.”

Third-place showings have anchored Washington’s podium haul which has been highlighted by a second-place run in the opening Sprint Challenge 992 race in early September at Laguna Seca and another runner-up result in the first Sprint Challenge 991 race at IMS earlier this month.

Ironically, the only race weekend Washington has missed recently in his busy schedule was the Sprint Challenge weekend at COTA in late August.

“I had some family obligations I wasn’t going to miss last time around so I am really looking forward to getting back to COTA,” Washington said. “That track is sick. It’s just so flowy, with elevations. It’s nice and new. It’s got to be one of the best tracks in the world. It’s really amazing with the Carrera Cup coming there, with the fans for Formula 1, the energy is going to be electric.”

McDonald runs his second career Carrera Cup weekend with GMG after the strong debut at Rennsport Reunion at WRLS. Sofronas and the team have worked closely with McDonald since he purchased a Porsche 911 GT2 RS from GMG Racing over two years ago.

“We knew Blake would be ready for Carrera Cup at Laguna Seca and he proved it,” Sofronas said. “At his young age, he was classified in the Pro category and runs in that class again at COTA, but we knew from his very first laps he was up to the challenge of being thrown into the deep end of the pool straight out of the box. He learned a lot in his debut and we will certainly build on that this weekend in Austin.”

An accomplished race and championship-winning driver in his own right, Sofronas wheels GMG’s third Carrera Cup entry this weekend in the Pro-Am class in the No. 14 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Sofronas runs his first professional race weekend since sustaining a back injury in a test session incident this past summer. Always in ready-to-race shape and fit at 55 years-old, Sofronas has made an ahead-of-schedule recovery.

“I actually made my first start in the Flacht Cup race for fairly modern Porsche GT cars during Rennsport Reunion but that race was cut short but an early incident,” Sofronas said. “Luckily I made a move for third right at that start just before the yellow flag, and getting on the podium and racing a little was just enough to make me want more. Carrera Cup at COTA will be the last chance for a professional race this year, so we jumped at it, and adding another car is never an issue. We have run up to seven competitive entries on some race weekends in 2023, and COTA will be a springboard into 2024 for what will be another full year of Porsche-spec racing in multiple series with multiple cars. Our engineering partners from Germany with Super Cup experience will be in full force and we are rolling out our upgraded hospitality and customer experience space. We are ready for 2024 and in many ways treating this weekend at COTA as the first event of next year.”

On track Carrera Cup action is underway at COTA today with a morning practice session. Following qualifying Saturday morning at 8:35 a.m. CDT, the weekend’s first 40-minute race starts that afternoon at 2:10 p.m. CDT. Sunday’s concluding 40-minute sprint at 10:50 a.m. CDT is the final race before that afternoon’s featured Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix.

With new partner Lane Frost Brand on board, Moffitt qualified his No. 25 Lane Frost Brand Ford Mustang 27th and despite making contact with the outside wall early in the race, Moffitt and the AM Racing team continued to work their ill-handling race car to post a respectable 24th place finish at the checkered flag.

In 30 races this season, Moffit has delivered one top-five, nine top-10s, 16 top-15s, 20 top-20s, and an average finish of 17.3.

JESSE LOVE AIMS FOR ANOTHER HISTORY MAKING PERFORMANCE IN OPEN WHEEL SHOWDOWN

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (October 19, 2023) – 18-year-old 2023 ARCA Menards Series champion Jesse Love will aim to add another notch to his history making career when he competes in the $10,000-to-win Midget portion of Davey Hamilton, Jr.’s Open Wheel Showdown, racing into the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on December 1-2.

Love holds the distinction as the youngest overall champion, at age 13, in the storied history of the Bay Cities Racing Association Midgets in 2018. He also served as one of the final combined dirt and asphalt Midget champions in the history of the sport. Love’s career progression includes two 51FIFTY Jr. Late Model Series championships at Madera Speedway, a USAC Ford Focus Midget championship in 2017, and two ARCA Menards Series West crowns. His crowning championship in his development as a driver came this season as the 18-year-old notched ten wins on the way to the ARCA Menards Series national title.

“It should be awesome! I’m looking forward to going to be a big pavement race,” Love said “In open wheel we don’t get to see a lot of it and I wasn’t around during the glory days of it. Shoutout to the Hamiltons for putting it on. It takes someone like that to get this ball rolling and get pavement back where it should!”

A familiar pairing will reunite with Love driving for engine builder and car owner Tres Van Dyne after winning the BCRA championship together. Love will return to the seat of a pavement Midget, a division he recognizes as one of the best in the sport.

“I’ve had a lot of success with Tres and looking forward to rekindling that relationship. I feel really confident in my Van Dyne Midget motor and I know Tres is proud of it. The Midget cars are so beautiful and the best looking cars there is. It’s the most fun car to drive and the racing is always pretty intense,” Love said.

Love will be one of the few drivers in the Midget field with experience at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, with 16 starts at the .375-mile oval and two wins in the USAC Ford Focus Midgets. He has also scored two podiums in three starts there in the ARCA Menards Series West.

“It’s a really unique track and people think it’s just paint the bottom. But the last time I won the race we kind of ran the middle,” Love said. “Obviously at Las Vegas you’d never run the top at a track like that. I was able to run a second or third groove to carry momentum however. It’s still for the most part can be a two lane race track. It looks cookie cutter but it’s very technical. There’s a lot of grip on the paint and it’s a really fast track for a pavement midget.”

“Getting horsepower hooked up for the race track will be difficult. It will be good racing at the end of the day.”

The driving technique that Love developed in his pavement Midget racing days has also been a big part of his development in the ARCA Menards Series, leading to 12 career ARCA national wins along with five ARCA Menards Series West wins.

“Growing up racing at Madera Speedway, Stockton, Ukiah, and Lakeport – it helped me kind of just live more on the edge than the pavement stock car stuff,” Love said. “It taught me how to race with respect and also have a lot of horsepower and how to drive a big horsepower car. Power to weight ratio is so big in a Midget and it’s so easy to break traction. With the pavement Midget Ive always had a big diamond in (my line). I still use that same technique to this day in the ARCA stuff: get in really hard and use the tire to your advantage.”

About Brad: Brad Perez, 26, is an American professional stock car racing driver. He currently competes part-time in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Perez is doted as a hardworking, first-generation racer of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent making his way into professional motorsports.

Perez has driven for three organizations, On Point Motorsports, Reaume Brothers Racing and Young’s Motorsports.

Perez’s part-time seasons have been highlighted by lead lap finishes in both events last season with a career-best 20th place result at COTA after starting 32nd.

Back To Familiar Territory: Fan favorite Spencer Boyd invades familiar territory this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the 22nd race of the 2023 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series season, eyeing his first top-10 of the year but more importantly, hunting his second win of his Truck Series career.

No. 161: This weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Boyd will make his 161st career NASCAR start. Boyd has three starts in the NASCAR Cup Series, 50 starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, and will make his 107th start in Trucks when the green flag waves Saturday afternoon.

The highlight of his NASCAR career is a NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series win at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in October 2019, driving for Young’s Motorsports.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: For Saturday afternoon’s Baptist Health 200, Young’s Motorsports, Boyd and Crowe Equipment will recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the 134-lap race.

Crowe Equipment of Jasonville, Indiana has extended their partnership with Spencer Boyd adding to their years of sponsorship. The iconic yellow and black design that has been prevalent through the years will return with the addition of some pink recognizing breast cancer awareness month.

The addition of pink comes along with a special passenger added to the name rail of Boyd’s No. 12 Chevrolet Silverado. Kay Crowe’s name has been printed above the driver’s door honoring the mother of Crowe Equipment’s owner, Scott Crowe, who lost her battle with breast cancer.

Spencer Boyd Truck Series Homestead-Miami Speedway Stats: Saturday afternoon’s Baptist Health Cancer Care 200 will mark Boyd’s fourth NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series race at the famed South Florida 1.5-mile speedway.

In his three previous efforts, Boyd has a track-best of 22nd after starting 28th in the 2020 Baptist Health 200 driving for Young’s Motorsports.

He holds an average finish of 29.3 since 2016.

Chasing That W: Boyd is eyeing his second career NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series victory for himself and Young’s Motorsports.

In 2019 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Boyd pulled an upset during the Truck Series Playoffs by winning the Sugarland Shines 250 at the 2.66-mile superspeedway, edging Todd Gilliland by 0.027 seconds.

Truck Series Rundown: In seven years of Truck Series competition, Boyd has 107 career Truck Series starts with one win, two top-five and three top-10 finishes, and a championship best of 17th in 2019 and carries an average finish of 24.5.

Welcome Back!: This weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Young’s Motorsports welcomes back Chesapeake, Va. native Nick Leitz as the driver of the No. 20 Precision Measurements Inc. Chevrolet Silverado RST for the third time in 2023.

In May, Leitz made his Truck Series debut for Young’s Motorsports at Kansas Speedway where he finished 21st after starting 31st in the Heart of America 200.

A little more than a month later, Leitz returned at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway where he impressed with a top-20 finish in the Rackley Roofing 200.

Welcome Aboard: This weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Young’s Motorsports and Leitz welcome Precision Measurements Inc. as the primary partner on the No. 20 Chevrolet Silverado RST for this weekend’s race.

Nick Leitz Truck Series Homestead-Miami Speedway Stats: Saturday afternoon’s Baptist Health 200 at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway will mark the Virginian’s second Truck Series start at the 1.5-mile track.

Last fall, he earned a track-best finish of 28th after starting 33rd in the Baptist Health Cancer Care 200 for Reaume Bros. Racing.

He also holds an average finish of 28.0 and has completed 131 of 134 laps, for a 97.8 percent lap completion rate.

Calling the Shots: Guiding Leitz as crew chief of the No. 20 Precision Measurements Inc. Chevrolet Silverado RST is veteran crew chief Joe Lax.

On Saturday, he will be crew chief in his 116th NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series race. In his previous 115 races, he has one pole and nine top-10 finishes.
