Roush Fenway takes its successful Superspeedway program to Daytona this weekend, where the 2020 regular season culminates Saturday night under the lights. Jack Roush has 11 wins at Daytona overall, including seven in the Cup Series – five of which were in the summer race.

Dramatic Daytona Set to Cap Regular Season Saturday Night

· For the first time in the sport’s current playoff format, the NASCAR Cup Series’ regular season will culminate Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway, which is expected to be a high drama event as drivers have one last chance to lock themselves into the 2020 Playoffs.

· This marks the second trip to Daytona in as many weeks, as the series visited the Road Course Aug. 16. With 10 drivers with at least one win in 2020, three additional drivers have locked themselves into the playoff grid. A win by a non-locked in driver would punch their ticket into the 10-race playoffs, which begin Labor Day Weekend at Darlington.

· NASCAR will continue to use three competition-based performance metrics to determine the starting lineup and pit selection order for each race, replacing the random draw procedure. Buescher drew the 17th spot in the lineup, while Newman is set to roll off 22nd.

· Four weeks of NASCAR action were initially completed prior to the COVID-19 hiatus with races at Atlanta, Homestead, Texas, Bristol, Richmond, Talladega, Dover and Martinsville postponed before the schedule later picked back up in mid-May.

Dover DH Recap, Daytona Preview

· Buescher finished 16th in the opening race last weekend in Dover, and followed that with a 14th-place run a day later for his eighth top-15 of 2020.

· Newman finished 19th on Saturday, and 24th Sunday in Dover.

· Fifth Third Bank, who went to victory lane in this race three years ago, returns to Buescher’s No. 17 machine Saturday night.

· Guaranteed Rate is back this weekend with Newman, to continue their 12-race primary partnership in the closing months of the 2020 season.

Recent Superspeedway Success

Dating back just two races in Daytona, RFR has been in the mix in the closing laps more than once. At last summer’s Daytona event, Newman earned a fifth-place finish, while Ricky Stenhouse Jr., led a pair of laps before being caught up in an incident to finish 24th. Looking back at this season’s Daytona 500, Newman led coming to the stripe, before is horrific crash that sent him to the hospital and kept him out of the car for three races. He would finish ninth in that race, while Buescher crossed the line third.

Looking at Jack Roush’s recent Talladega success, similar results were had in Alabama. Newman finished second in one of the closest finishes in NASCAR history last fall, while Stenhouse finished ninth in that race. This spring, Buescher earned a sixth-place run, while Newman ran out of fuel in the closing laps to finish 24th.

Shining Bright in the ‘Sunshine State’

In 212 NCS starts at Daytona, Roush Fenway has recorded seven wins, 41 top-fives, 77 top-10s and has led 832 laps. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., earned the win in this race two years ago, the organizations most recent win overall. RFR also has five poles in the Cup series at Daytona, with the most recent coming in 2016 with Greg Biffle.

Two Trips to Victory Lane in 2017

Just two years after earning his first ever NASCAR win, Ryan Reed survived a wild kickoff to the 2017 season. He survived multiple on-track incidents after starting on the outside of the front row and led only nine laps, but the final two, en route to the win over a host of Cup regulars.

Then, in July of 2017, Stenhouse found himself in victory lane for the second time after leading 17 laps in his Fifth Third Ford. Stenhouse first led at lap 86, and from there survived a total of 14 cautions for 51 laps in what was his second win of the season.

Roush Fenway has recorded five victories in the July event at Daytona, including the organization’s first at the high-banked oval with former driver Jeff Burton in 2000. Former Roush Fenway drivers Greg Biffle, Jamie McMurray and David Ragan earned victories in 2003, 2007 and 2011, respectively. Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. earned the fifth in 2017.

From F1 to NASCAR: Could This Switch Become More Common?

Over the last few decades, increasing numbers of Formula One drivers have opted to part ways with open-wheel racing to try their hand at NASCAR. Perhaps most notably, the likes of Jim Clark, Juan Pablo Montoya, and Kimi Raikkonen have all participated in at least one NASCAR event.

Although a small sample size, it’s evident that F1 drivers are open to exploring the idea of NASCAR. While there are many other racing organizations available to them, NASCAR is undoubtedly proving to be one of the most popular. So, with that in mind, let’s consider whether this transition is one that could happen far more frequently in the coming years.

Flirting with the Idea of Stock Racing

Although he hasn’t competed in NASCAR, Lewis Hamilton has somewhat flirted with driving a competitive stock car. While the six-time Drivers’ World Champion is unlikely to walk away from F1 with records being within his reach, the Englishman may be tempted by NASCAR, as many others have. Interestingly, back in 2011, the 35-year-old took part in a car swap at the Watkins Glen track with Tony Stewart, the three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion. That said, in a report by Motorsport, it claims that Hamilton is open to the idea of staying with Mercedes beyond his racing career as he continues to dominate F1.

Although, of course, a one-off car swap is not an indication of Hamilton seeking an alternate racing career, he may find walking away from the high-speed competition a troublesome transition. Alonso is a primary example of a driver endeavoring to retain a sense of competitiveness for as long as possible, having driven in F1, IndyCar, and endurance events at the age of 39.

Furthermore, from a brand perspective, a record-holding driver such as Hamilton could globally boost both his and NASCAR’s reputation. In the 21st century, top-level stock car racing has been one of the most popular sports events throughout the United States of America. This is evident by the Daytona 500, which recorded 7.3 million viewers in February 2020, according to Essentially Sports.

Moreover, it’s a testament to the sport’s popularity that it has become a focal point for sports betting operators. Interestingly, despite their stylistic differences, world-champion F1 drivers like the 35-year-old would be subject to far more competitive odds in NASCAR, as opposed to open-wheel racing. Aside from this, the best NASCAR betting sites offer a wide array of promotions, in addition to extensive markets, such as outright winner, podium bets, head-to-head driver matchups, future bets, and much more.

A Desire to Remain Competitive

For any high-level competitor, the principal aim is to win. Unfortunately for some, this isn’t always possible in F1 due to the lucrative nature of the sport aiding an uncompetitive sense of superiority among particular teams. From this standpoint, it’s apparent as to why drivers have sought to diversify their racing credentials.

Problematically for F1 drivers, the sport is incredibly demanding both mentally and physically. In turn, this is likely to have a more significant effect on performance as racers reach the latter stages of their careers. The high-speed nature of top-level open-wheel racing, combined with the extreme G-forces, means that longevity is hard to guarantee in F1.

Because of this, stock racing provides a wide array of drivers with the opportunity to compete on a more level playing field. Take Scott Speed, for example. During his F1 career, the former Toro Rosso driver failed to score a single point for the Red Bull-owned team. In NASCAR, however, the now 37-year-old enjoyed more success. According to an article by The Things, Speed secured a top-ten finish in only his second race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series back in 2008. Moreover, in his stock racing career, the Californian has won one race, which came at the KDI Office Technology 200 in the same year.

NASCAR Presents an Intriguing Opportunity

Although there are no guarantees that Hamilton would ever move to NASCAR, it isn’t unheard of for world-class F1 drivers to transition to stock racing. For some, it presents a more even playing field on which to showcase their talents, while, for others, it’s a platform to stay competitive. As the racing world often moves rapidly and unpredictably, it’s not out of the question that more drivers may, at the latter stages of their careers, swap F1 for NASCAR.

This weekend the NASCAR Cup Series and the Xfinity Series head to Daytona International Speedway in Florida while the Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series and the ARCA Menards Series travel to World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway in Illinois.

The Cup Series race at Daytona will serve as the regular season finale with the start of the postseason Playoffs set to begin on Sept. 6 at Darlington Raceway.

There are 13 drivers who have already earned a spot in the Cup Series 16-driver Playoff field. They include Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr., Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, Aric Almirola, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Alex Bowman, Austin Dillon and Cole Custer.

REGULAR SEASON WRAP-UP: Through the first 25 races of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season, Chase Elliott has recorded some noteworthy stats and career highs. His win at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May secured his spot in the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year, and he has collected two wins, one pole award, nine top-five finishes, 14 top-10s and 530 laps led in 25 races. Elliott is currently projected to be fourth in the playoff standings as the series heads into Saturday night’s regular-season finale at Daytona International Speedway.

THROUGH 25: Through 25 races in the NASCAR Cup Series season, Elliott has delivered career bests in runner-up results (two), top-five finishes (nine), stage points (200) and stage wins (six). His two wins and 14 top-10s are tied for a personal best through 25 races.

HOOTERS RETURNS: Saturday night at Daytona, the black and orange Hooters “Night Owl” paint scheme will return to the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE for the NASCAR Cup Series regular season finale. The “Night Owl” design was selected over three other options in an open fan vote on Hooters.com. A casual dining establishment with a deep history in NASCAR, the Atlanta-based company will be a three-race primary sponsor of the No. 9 team this year. Elliott most recently piloted the Hooters Chevy at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The Hooters Chevrolet will return later this season in the Texas Motor Speedway playoff race.

POINTS, POINTS, POINTS: As the Cup Series heads to Daytona, Elliott is tied for the third-most stage wins (six) and has garnered the fifth-most stage points (200). He is currently seventh in the driver points standings, 164 behind leader Kevin Harvick.

NIGHT RACE SUCCESS: Elliott and the No. 9 team have thrived during night races this season. The Dawsonville, Georgia, native has garnered one win (Charlotte), two runner-up finishes and four top-fives in the last five night races. Elliott was also victorious under the lights in the 2020 NASCAR All-Star Race at Bristol Motor Speedway in July.

SUPERSPEEDWAY STATS: Elliott will make his 19th superspeedway start in the NASCAR Cup Series on Saturday. In his previous 18 races, the fifth-year driver has started on the front row seven times – five from the pole position. In April 2019, Elliott earned his first superspeedway victory at Talladega. The driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet also has two Duel qualifying race wins at Daytona (2017 and 2018) and was in position to win the 2017 DAYTONA 500 before running out of fuel from the lead on lap 198 of 200. Elliott has also made 12 superspeedway starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, winning the Daytona season opener in 2016.

FLORIDA NATIVE: On Saturday, No. 9 crew chief Alan Gustafson will return home to the “Birthplace of Speed.” He hails from Ormond Beach, Florida, just down the road from Daytona International Speedway. After graduating from Seabreeze High School, he enrolled at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to study mechanical engineering. Gustafson returns to Daytona for his 16th full-time season as a crew chief and his fifth year with Elliott.

GUSTAFSON AT DAYTONA: Gustafson would like to add a Daytona oval win to his résumé. On Aug. 16, he captured his first points win at the DAYTONA Road Course. The 45-year-old crew chief also has collected two Duel qualifying race wins (2017 and 2018) at the track with Elliott. He has two runner-up finishes on the 2.5-mile oval with driver Kyle Busch in 2006 and 2007. The 2007 result with Busch and runner-up Jamie McMurray remains the closest margin of victory ever in the summer race at Daytona (0.005 seconds). Gustafson also has won the pole award at Daytona five times with three drivers: Elliott (three), Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin. He is tied with Leonard Wood and Waddell Wilson for the most DAYTONA 500 pole awards for a crew chief with four.

PIT POWER: As the NASCAR Cup Series heads back to Daytona, the No. 9 team continues to own the second-best average time for four-tire pit stops at 13.91 seconds through 25 races in the season. The team is comprised of jackman T.J. Semke, gasman John Gianninoto, tire carrier Jared Erspamer and tire changers Chad Avrit and Nick O’Dell.

DISHIN’ ON DOVER: Looking to rebound after a 28th-place finish in the first of two races at Dover International Speedway, William Byron gained track position early in Sunday’s event and utilized it to continue his run up front, scoring crucial points in both stages. The 22-year-old driver raced his way to a fourth-place finish – his first top five and best finish so far in the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season. Byron collected 46 points total during Sunday’s event, the most he has scored in a single race during his Cup career.

ONE FINAL CHANCE: With only one race left in the regular season, Byron is looking to lock himself into the playoffs for the second time in his three-year NASCAR Cup Series career. Fighting through adversity during the doubleheader weekend in Dover, the driver of the No. 24 Liberty University Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE currently is four points above the playoff cutoff line heading into the final race of the regular season.

DAYTONA DEETS: While superspeedway racing can be unpredictable, Byron has had success when it comes to the high-banked oval of Daytona International Speedway. With five previous Cup Series starts at the 2.5-mile venue, Byron has one pole award – the 2019 DAYTONA 500 – and a runner-up finish coming in July last season, which ties his career-best finish in the Cup Series. Earlier this year, Byron raced his way to a win at Daytona in the second Duel non-points qualifying race leading into the DAYTONA 500. Aside from his five Cup Series appearances, Byron has two Xfinity Series starts, where he captured the win in the July 2017 race, becoming the youngest Xfinity Series driver to win at Daytona at 19 years, 7 months and 1 day. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native also has one Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series start and one ARCA Series start at DIS.

KNAUS’ KNOWLEDGE: Calling the shots for 38 previous Cup Series races at Daytona, Chad Knaus has captured the checkered flag twice there, sweeping the 2013 season with a DAYTONA 500 win and following it up with a victory in July on the 2.5-mile oval with Jimmie Johnson and the No. 48 team. However, Knaus has also had success with Byron at Daytona in their almost two years of working together. The duo secured the pole for the 2019 DAYTONA 500, finished second in the rain-shortened July 2019 event and raced to a win in the second Duel qualifying race at Daytona in February.

LIBERTY U IS BACK: On board the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE two weeks ago at the DAYTONA Road Course, Liberty University will be back on Byron’s machine Saturday night when the Cup Series returns to Daytona – but this time on the high-banked oval. Liberty University is in its sixth season of sponsoring the 22-year-old driver dating back to his time in the late model ranks. Liberty has been Training Champions for Christ since it was founded in 1971. Located in the mountains of Central Virginia, Liberty is a liberal arts institution with 17 colleges and schools that offers more than 600 degree programs from the certificate to the doctoral level, on campus and online. Working on an undergraduate degree in business communications, Byron is in his junior year at Liberty University through its online program.

BEACH BUMS: When the Cup Series heads to Daytona for Saturday night’s race, three members of the No. 24 team will return their return to their hometown track. Longtime Hendrick Motorsports front-tire changer Johnny Roberts hails from Titusville, Florida, just down the coast from Daytona Beach, where he spent most of his time surfing before making his way to North Carolina and trying out with Hendrick Motorsports in 2010. Engineer Brandon McSwain grew up approximately 100 miles from the “World Center of Racing” in Auburndale, Florida. Just a few miles down the road from where McSwain grew up, engine tuner Ben Proctor calls Lakeland, Florida, home.

WIN A ‘RIDE’ WITH BYRON: With September designated as childhood and ovarian cancer awareness month, the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation and the NASCAR Foundation have partnered to support those who have overcome battles with cancer. For the September race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, fans will have the opportunity to nominate a cancer hero to “ride” on a participating Cup Series driver’s car, including Byron’s No. 24 Chevy, by bidding on the space above the driver-side door. NO STRANGER TO SUCCESS: The No. 48 Ally Chevrolet team is no stranger to success at Daytona International Speedway. Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson heads to the “World Center of Racing” for possibly the final time in his career as a two-time DAYTONA 500 winner (2006 and 2013) and a one-time 400-mile event winner (July 2013).

NON-POINTS VICTORIES: In addition to the hardware Johnson received for winning three Cup Series points races at Daytona, he has two victories in the Duels qualifier events leading into the DAYTONA 500, (2010 and 2015) and two trophies from the Clash at DAYTONA exhibition race (2005 and 2019).

LAST TIME: The last time Johnson went to victory lane in a NASCAR Cup Series event was in 2019 when he won the Clash at DAYTONA event to open the season. It was the debut of partner Ally on the No. 48 Chevrolet and the last time Johnson hoisted a trophy in victory lane.

EVERYTHING HAPPENS IN THREES: Johnson and crew chief Cliff Daniels have hit a sweet spot as of late. Sunday’s third-place finish at Dover was their second top-five finish and third top-10 in the last three races. Two of Johnson’s four top-fives and three of his nine top-10s in 2020 also came in the last three Cup races. The driver of the No. 48 Ally Chevy’s average finish of 4.67 over the last three event is his best over a three-race stretch since the spring of 2017 where he had an average finish of 4.33 after he won at Texas and Bristol and finished 11th at Richmond.

MONSTER HONOR: On Saturday, Johnson was honored in multiple ways at Dover International Speedway to commemorate his last time racing at the track as a full-time driver. The street in front of the venue’s grandstands was renamed “Jimmie Johnson Drive,” and he had his name cemented in victory lane as “The Monster Mile Master.” He also saw his No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE displayed in the hands of the track’s enormous Miles the Monster statue.

ON THE BUBBLE: This weekend’s event at Daytona is crucial in Johnson’s quest for a record-breaking eighth championship. He enters Daytona four points shy of the playoff cutoff, just behind teammate William Byron. Johnson failed to make the playoffs last season – the only time he did not qualify for the post-season since its inception in 2004.

CANCER HEROES: September is designated as childhood and ovarian cancer awareness month, and Johnson is partnering with his fellow competitors, the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation and the NASCAR Foundation to support individuals who have overcome cancer. AXALTA ON BOARD: This weekend’s race at Daytona International Speedway marks the fourth and final event of the 2020 season in which the Axalta colors will adorn Alex Bowman’s No. 88 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE. The leading global supplier of liquid and powder coatings and Hendrick Motorsports announced an extension back in February that will take their partnership through the 2027 season. Read more here.

LOOKING TOWARD THE PLAYOFFS: Bowman will make his third appearance in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs following his March win at Auto Club Speedway. Bowman has raced his way into the Round of 12 the last two years, and this is the second season where he has clinched a spot in the playoffs based on a victory. In 2019, the team earned a playoff position after capturing the win at Chicagoland Speedway. The No. 88 team finished 12th in the Cup Series point standings in 2019, and the team currently is eighth in the projected playoff standings through 25 events.

BACK TO THE OVAL: Bowman will make his ninth start on the Daytona International Speedway oval in this weekend’s 400-mile event. The Tucson, Arizona, native has one top-10 finish at the 2.5-mile superspeedway, which came in the 2018 summer event. The Axalta-sponsored driver has led 17 laps at the facility in eight Cup starts and has completed 99.2% of the total laps completed. The 27-year-old Bowman has two appearances in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at the track, earning an average start of 10.0 and an average finish of 11.5.

NIGHT RACE SUCCESS: The driver of the No. 88 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE has finished inside the top 10 in two of the last three night races this season. Bowman finished sixth at Martinsville Speedway on June 10 and eighth at Kansas Speedway on July 23.

ALL ABOUT STAGE POINTS: The No. 88 team has four stage wins this season, which is tied for third overall in the NASCAR Cup Series. Bowman has captured 167 stage points in 2020, the eighth-most of all drivers. He is also running much better than his finishing positions show with an average running position of 12.8 and an average finish of 17.4 – a difference of 4.6.

IVES AT DAYTONA: Crew chief Greg Ives is set to call his 12th race at the Daytona oval under the Saturday night lights. The Bark River, Michigan, native has one win at the facility with Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2015 after he led for 96 laps. Ives’ drivers have captured two top-five finishes and three top-10s at Daytona and have led 169 laps total. In 2013 and 2014, Ives was a crew chief at JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. His drivers led for 25 laps at Daytona, had an average start of 14.8 and an average finish of 14.2. From 2006-2012, Ives was a race engineer on the No. 48 team with Jimmie Johnson. During that time, the team had one win (2006), one second-place finish and one pole award at 2.5-mile venue.

PLAYOFF MOMENTUM: In Sunday’s race at Dover International Speedway, Hendrick Motorsports placed three of its Chevrolets inside the top five for the first time since April 2016. Over the last three NASCAR Cup Series events, the team has posted six top-five finishes with at least one car in the top five in each race including Chase Elliott’s Aug. 16 win at the DAYTONA Road Course.

DAYTONA HISTORY: Elliott’s road-course performance marked the 42nd Hendrick Motorsports victory at the iconic Daytona International Speedway facility. The team has 14 points-paying NASCAR Cup Series wins on the 2.5-mile oval including a record eight in the DAYTONA 500. In non-points events, Hendrick Motorsports has 16 victories in the Duels qualifying races and seven in the Clash at DAYTONA. It also owns four wins in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

RARE COMPANY: A Hendrick Motorsports first-place finish Saturday night would tie the team with Wood Brothers Racing for the most points wins (15) on the Daytona oval. Hendrick Motorsports holds the track records for pole positions (20), runner-up finishes (14), top-fives (56), top-10s (98) and laps led (2,134). IT’S DOWN TO DAYTONA: Going into Saturday evening’s cutoff race for the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, Hendrick Motorsports has two drivers locked in and two with an opportunity to make the field. This will mark the 15th consecutive season the team has put at least two drivers in the playoffs, which is the most of all organizations. Hendrick Motorsports has been represented by three drivers a record 12 times and by four drivers three times (tied for the most).

“I think this weekend is all going to depend on where you are in the standings heading into the race and what you have to do or don’t have to do to make it into the playoffs. There are guys that have to win to get in, there’s guys who are right on the cutline who are trying to be consistent to advance. There are guys on offense, there’s guys on defense. Lucky for us, we are not really having to play the points game necessarily to get in, but we are still battling for regular season points finishing position because that has a direct impact on your playoff points for the final 10 races. “Whatever way you look at it, no matter where we’re at, our approach isn’t going to change that much going into Daytona. You’re going to have to be aggressive in this race regardless of the situation by trying to get stage points and trying to win the race. We had a Duel win there earlier this year at Daytona, which is great. I absolutely think we can go there and be aggressive and win again. That doesn’t change after how Dover went.”

Byron on Daytona as a playoff cutoff race:
“Daytona is an accept-it-as-it-happens kind of place, which makes it a challenge. You have to go in expecting that things aren’t going to go your way, and hopefully they do. It’s one of those things that you have to go in with low expectations, try race as hard as you can, and hopefully you come out on the good side of things. No one knows exactly what to expect but I am excited and hopeful that we’ll have a good run.”

Driver Jimmie Johnson on not being stressed about making the playoffs:
“I can’t worry about the playoffs. I won’t worry about it. There is nothing we can do except go out there and win. We are in this position due to the DQ at Charlotte and missing the Brickyard 400 due to my positive COVID-19 test result. The numbers don’t lie at Dover. We were ridiculously fast and had we not had to overcome a speeding penalty, we would have had something for (Kevin) Harvick. I hate that we are racing our teammate (Byron), but I hope we can both have a good run and both make our way into the playoffs. It’s a speedway race – anything can happen.”

Newman to make 750th start across NASCAR at Daytona

A significant milestone is in the making for veteran Ryan Newman, driver of the No. 6 Ford Mustang for Roush Fenway Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series, as he battles for a spot in this year’s Playoffs. When the green flag waves in the upcoming Cup race at Daytona International Speedway, Newman will achieve 750 starts across NASCAR’s three major division series (Truck, Xfinity and Cup Series).

A native of South Bend, Indiana, who started his racing career in the United Midget Auto Racing Association and the All-American Midget Series before moving to USAC, Newman achieved three ARCA victories while driving for team owner Roger Penske in 2000 before he made his first NASCAR start at Phoenix in the Cup Series in November 2000. Driving the No. 02 Alltel Ford for Penske led by crew chief Matt Borland, Newman started 10th and finished 41st due to an engine failure.

In 2001, while Newman was pursuing his B.S. degree in engineering at Purdue University, he competed in 15 Xfinity Series events and seven Cup Series events for Penske. In the Xfinity side, he achieved his first career win at Michigan International Speedway in August. He also earned six poles, two top-five results, eight top-10 results and an average result of 12.6. In the Cup side, he achieved his first career pole for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte’s Lowe’s Motor Speedway in May. Despite a strong start, where he led the first 10 laps, he wrecked in Turn 3 the following lap and retired in last place of the 43-car field. Overall, he earned two top-five results, including a career-best runner-up finish at Kansas Speedway in September behind Jeff Gordon, in seven Cup starts.

In 2002, Newman graduated to a full-time driving role for Penske and in the No. 12 Alltel Ford for Penske led by Borland. Through the first 11 races, Newman earned a pole and four top-10 results, including a second-place finish at Richmond in May. The following race, which was The Winston (All-Star Race) at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Newman was one of two competitors to transfer to the main event from The Winston Open after winning the No Bull 5 Sprint. In a five-lap shootout in the main event, Newman held off Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win The Winston and a total of $750,000. He became the first Cup competitor to win The Winston after transferring from the Open since Michael Waltrip made the last accomplishment in 1996 and the first to do so from the No Bull 5 Sprint. From the Coca-Cola 600 in May through Richmond in September, Newman earned 11 top-10 results and four runner-up finishes. The following race at New Hampshire, Newman achieved his first Cup career win in his 35th series start. For the final nine races of the 2002 season, Newman earned five six top-10 results and three poles before he concluded the season in sixth place in the final standings. In the end, Newman emerged as the Rookie-of-the-Year recipient over Jimmie Johnson with 14 top-five results and 22 top-10 results. His six poles were the most achieved by a rookie competitor.

Newman started off the 2003 season on a rough note by flipping in the Daytona 500 in February following contact with Ken Schrader. It took until Texas Motor Speedway in April for Newman to achieve his first victory of the season and the second of his Cup career. The 2003 Cup season was an up-and-down season for the Indiana native. The pros to the season were the driver of the No. 12 Alltel/Penske Dodge achieving a season-high eight victories (winning at tracks like Dover, Chicagoland, Pocono, Michigan, Richmond and Kansas), 17 top-five results and 22 top-10 results. In addition, Newman earned a season-high 11 poles and was nicknamed “The Rocket Man” for his strong qualifying efforts and pole awards. The downside to Newman’s sophomore season was that he earned seven DNFs, including his flip at Daytona and after triggering a vicious 27-car wreck in the early laps at Talladega in April when he blew a tire in the middle of the pack, made hard contact against the Turn 1 outside wall and nearly flipped. He went on to conclude the season in sixth place in the final standings.

Throughout the 2004 NASCAR Cup Series season, Newman won two races (Michigan in June and Dover in September) and recorded nine poles. He also earned 11 top-five results and 14 top-10 results as he was one of 10 competitors to make the inaugural postseason battle in the Cup Series. He concluded the season in seventh-place in the final standings. Prior to the conclusion of the 2004 season, Newman surpassed 100 starts across NASCAR’s three major division series.

In 2005, Newman remained as a full-time competitor of the No. 12 Alltel/Penske Dodge in the Cup Series while he also competed in nine Xfinity Series races in the No. 39 Alltel/Penske Dodge. Throughout the 2005 Cup season, he won only one race (New Hampshire in September) and he earned eight poles, eight top-five results and 16 top-10 results. In addition, he made the Playoffs and concluded the season in sixth place in the final standings for the third time in his career. In nine Xfinity starts, he won six races, including the season finale at Homestead while also winning at Watkins Glen, Michigan, Bristol, Dover and Charlotte.

In 2006, Newman remained as a full-time competitor of the No. 12 Alltel/Penske Dodge in the Cup Series while he also competed in six Xfinity races in the No. 39 Mobil 1/Alltel/Penske Dodge. The 2006 Cup season was a down season for the Indiana native, who went winless and only earned two poles, two top-five results and seven top-10 results. In addition, he missed the Playoffs and concluded the season in 18th place in the final standings. His best result in the Xfinity Series was a runner-up finish at Auto Club Speedway in February. Following 2006, Newman surpassed 200 starts across NASCAR’s three major division series.

Throughout the 2007 Cup season, Newman achieved five poles, seven top-five results and 15 top-10 results before he concluded the Cup season in 13th place. He also made eight Xfinity starts, where he earned two top-five results and three top-10 results. In 2008, Newman received a draft from teammate Kurt Busch to pass Tony Stewart on the final lap and win the 50th running of the Daytona 500. The victory was Newman’s 13th of his Cup career, it snapped his winless drought dating back to September 2005 and it was the first Daytona 500 win for team owner Roger Penske. Despite winning the 500, Newman only achieved one more top-five results, one pole and a total of eight top-10 results before he concluded the season in 17th place in the final standings. Throughout the season, he made two Xfinity starts (Watkins Glen in the No. 22 FitzBradshaw Racing and at Homestead in the No. 33 Chevrolet for Kevin Harvick Inc.). He also made his NASCAR Truck Series debut at Atlanta Motor Speedway in October while driving the No. 2 Chevrolet Silverado for KHI, which he won following a late battle with NASCAR Hall of Famer Ron Hornaday Jr. To August 2020, Newman is one of 33 competitors to achieve a win across NASCAR’s three major division series. Following 2008, he also surpassed 300 starts across NASCAR’s three major division series.

Midway into the 2008 season, Newman announced his departure from Penske to drive for the newly formed Stewart-Haas Racing in 2009. Driving the No. 39 U.S. Army/Haas Automation Chevrolet for SHR with support from crew chief Tony Gibson, Newman finished 36th in his first start with SHR. Though he did not record a victory, the 26-race regular-season stretch was a consistent run for Newman as he achieved 12 top-10 results and made the 2009 Playoffs along with teammate/owner Tony Stewart, which marked his first appearance in the Playoffs since 2005. At Talladega in October, he was involved in a harrowing accident in the closing laps when he was sent airborne and landed upside down on Kevin Harvick’s hood before he slid across and down the banking on his roof and flipped once before he came to rest on his roof. He was able to emerged uninjured. For the final 10 races, he earned three more top-10 results and concluded the season in ninth place in the final standings. Throughout the 2009 season, he made 10 Xfinity starts between the No. 33 Chevrolet for Kevin Harvick Inc., the No. 5 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports and the No. 1 Chevrolet for Phoenix Racing. His best run was at Talladega in April, where he started on pole and was in prime position of winning before he was edged by David Ragan at the finish line. He also made two Truck starts in the No. 2 Chevrolet for Kevin Harvick Inc. as he finished in fourth place in both races.

Through the first six races of the 2010 Cup season, Newman finished no higher than fourth place. The following race at Phoenix, Newman, sporting the Tornados Ruiz Foods colors on his car and racing on two fresh tires on a two-lap shootout, overtook Jeff Gordon for the lead and held off Gordon to win as he achieved his first victory since the 2008 Daytona 500 and his first with Stewart-Haas Racing. He also recorded the first victory for veteran crew chief Tony Gibson. Though he missed the Playoffs and concluded the season in 15th place in the final standings, Newman and the No. 39 Chevrolet team achieved 12 additional top-10 results and a pole. He also made 12 Xfinity starts, all with Phoenix Racing, and he earned seven top-10 results.

Throughout the 26-race regular-season stretch of the 2011 Cup season, Newman won one race (New Hampshire in July) and earned 13 top-10 results as he made the Playoffs for the fourth time in his career. For the remaining 10 races of the season in the Playoffs, Newman recorded four additional top-10 results and concluded the season in 10th place in the final standings while Tony Stewart went on to win his third Cup championship. Newman also competed in one Xfinity event and one Truck event throughout 2011, both with Turner Motorsports. Following 2011, he surpassed 400 starts.

After finishing in the top 10 in two of the first five Cup races in 2012, Newman, sporting the Outback Steakhouse colors on his No. 39 SHR Chevrolet, made a late pass for the at Martinsville Speedway in April following a restart collision that knocked out Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Clint Bowyer, and he went on to win following a late battle with A.J. Allmendinger. Throughout the season, he earned six top-five results and 14 top-10 results before he concluded the season in 14th place in the standings while missing the Playoffs for the second time in the last four seasons. He also made one Xfinity start at Texas in November with Turner Motorsports, where he finished 19th.

For the first 19 races of the 2013 Cup season, Newman earned eight top-10 results. The following race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, his home track, he started off the weekend by achieving his 50th Cup career pole. On race day, he and crew chief Matt Borland opted for a two-tire pit stop in the closing laps to beat Jimmie Johnson and achieve his first victory of the season at Indianapolis in front of a home crowd. For the next five Cup races, Newman earned two additional top-five results. At Richmond in September, he took the lead late in the race and was in position of claiming a second victory and qualifying for the Playoffs when Clint Bowyer spun late in the race. Following an ensuing pit stop, where Newman exited in fifth place, he made his way up to third place, but he missed the Playoffs in a tiebreaker with Martin Truex Jr., Bowyer’s teammate. A few days later, however, Newman replaced Truex in the Playoffs along with Jeff Gordon after NASCAR determined that Bowyer’s spin was intentional in an effort for Truex to make the Playoffs and place two Michael Waltrip Racing cars in the postseason. He went on to achieve six additional top-10 results before he concluded the season in 11th place in the final standings. He also competed in the inaugural Truck Series race at Eldora Speedway, where he finished in third place. Following 2013, Newman surpassed 500 starts.

After five seasons with Stewart-Haas Racing, Newman joined forces with Richard Childress Racing to drive the No. 31 Caterpillar/Quicken Loans Chevrolet SS led by crew chief Luke Lambert in 2014 while SHR expanded to a four-car operation as Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch joined the organization. He finished 22nd in his first start with RCR in the Daytona 500 and went on to achieve nine top-10 results throughout the 26-race regular-season stretch to make the Playoffs. For the first eight races in the Playoffs, he earned five top-10 results. At Phoenix in November, Newman made a heroic bump and last lap pass on rookie Kyle Larson to finish in 11th place and earn a spot in the Championship Round at Homestead. At Homestead, he finished second on track and in the final standings to race winner and the champion Kevin Harvick. Overall, he earned five top-five results and 16 top-10 results in his first season with RCR and the runner-up result in the standings was his best in his 13th full-time season in the Cup Series.

Throughout the 2015 and 2016 Cup seasons, Newman earned seven top-five results and 25 top-10 results while achieving a best points result of 11th place in 2015. He also made one Truck start at Kansas in May in the No. 8 NEMCO Motorsports Chevrolet, where he finished second. Following 2016, Newman surpassed 600 starts. In 2017, following the first three races, Newman and crew chief Luke Lambert gambled in the closing laps by remaining on track on old tires with the lead. In a two-lap shootout, Newman held off Larson to win his first Cup race since the 2013 Brickyard 400 and his first with RCR. He concluded the 2017 season with a total of seven top-five results, 13 top-10 results and a 16th-place result in the final standings along with his Phoenix win.

After five seasons with Richard Childress Racing and coming off a disappointing 2018 season, where he only earned nine top-10 results and concluded the season in 17th place in the final standings, Newman moved to Roush Fenway Racing to pilot the iconic No. 6 Ford Mustang in the 2019 Cup Series season led by crew chief Scott Graves. Newman finished 14th in his first race with RFR in the Daytona 500 and he earned nine top-10 results throughout the 26-race regular-season stretch to make the Playoffs. Following finishes of 10th, fifth and 32nd in the first round (three races) of the Playoffs, he was eliminated from title contention. He went on to earn three additional top-10 results and conclude the season in 15th place in the final standings. Following 2019, Newman surpassed 700 starts across NASCAR’s three major division series.

This season, Newman started off 19th full-time season in the Cup Series on a harrowing note. He was in prime position of winning his second Daytona 500 entering the frontstretch until a bump from Blaney turned Newman’s No. 6 Ford across the track and into the outside wall, where he flipped upside down and was hit on the driver’s side by an oncoming Corey LaJoie. The impact launched Newman into the air and across the finish line in ninth place before he came to rest on his roof with oil leaking and flames bursting out of his car. Following the accident, Newman was transported to a local hospital in Florida, where he sustained serious but non life-threatening injuries. Nearly two days after his accident, Newman walked out of the hospital while holding the hands of his daughters. With Newman recovering from a head injury, Ross Chastain drove Newman’s No. 6 car in three races.

In May, when NASCAR returned to on-track racing in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Newman was medically cleared to return to racing. He achieved a pair of top-15 results in his first two races back since his injuries at Darlington Raceway. He went on to earn six additional top-15 results in 22 starts through the first 25 Cup races of this season. He is currently ranked in 25th place in the regular-season standings, 245 points below the top-16 cutline, and is in a “must-win” scenario to make the 2020 Cup Playoffs.

PLANO, Texas (August 26, 2020) – It’s the final regular season race for the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) as drivers battle for spots in the Playoffs on the high banks in Daytona. The NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) will join them, while the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Trucks Series (NGROTS) and ARCA Menards Series race in St. Louis.

300 for the Camry… With Denny Hamlin’s sixth victory of the season at Dover International Speedway on Sunday, Toyota is closing in on 300 victories for the Toyota Camry in NASCAR. Hamlin’s victory was the 150th Camry win in the NCS. Toyota also campaigned the Camry in the NXS from 2007-2018, earning 149 victories.

Hamlin Strong at Daytona… Hamlin heads back to Daytona after winning the last two Daytona 500’s and three of the last five season-opening races at the 2.5-mile Florida superspeedway. In February, Hamlin led 79 laps (of 209) to score the prestigious victory. Hamlin has added five additional wins this season and currently has 37 Playoff points.

Busch Secure in Playoff Field… Kyle Busch clinched a spot in the 2020 Playoff field following Sunday’s race at Dover. Although he’s yet to register a win this season, the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series champion looks to defend his title on the strength of 11 top-five finishes and 13 top-10 results in 25 races this year. Busch has previously won at Daytona in the summer 2008 race and also scored a victory in the non-points playing Busch Clash at Daytona in 2012.

Jones Ready for a Playoff Push… Erik Jones heads to Daytona, a track he’s had success at in the past, as he looks to score another victory to clinch a Playoff spot. Jones earned his first career Cup Series victory in July of 2018 at Daytona and added a Busch Clash win this February at Daytona in the non-points race.

Burton Looking for One More Spot… Harrison Burton started his Xfinity Series rookie season with a strong performance at Daytona International Speedway in February, earning a runner-up finish and leading nine laps around the superspeedway. Burton has since scored his first two career NXS victories at Auto Club Speedway in February and Homestead-Miami in June and sits sixth in the overall point standings.

Hill Leads the Pack… Tundra driver Austin Hill continues to lead the NGROTS point standings with a series best 11 top-10 finishes, and he is also the frontrunner in average finishing position (7.4). Hill is looking for his first top-10 finish at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway after back-to-back 11th-place finishes.

Kraus Ready for the Arch… NGROTS rookie Derek Kraus is making his first Truck Series start at Gateway but has fond memories of the St. Louis-area track. Kraus drove to the victory in what is now the ARCA Menards Series West in 2018 and added a second-place finish there last season on his way to the ARCA Menards Series West championship.

Closing in on 100… With Michael Self’s second victory of the season at Daytona International Speedway nearly two weeks ago, Toyota has now earned 95 ARCA national series wins since joining the series in 2007. Former Toyota driver Michael Annett drove to the first win for Toyota in the series at Talladega Superspeedway in October 2007. Toyota has quickly added to that total in recent years as Camry drivers have won 44 of the past 52 national ARCA events.

Nothing Like Your First… Ty Gibbs drove to his first national ARCA Menards Series victory with a last lap pass last year at Gateway. Gibbs has since added four additional national series wins, including three triumphs this season at Pocono Raceway, Kentucky Speedway and Iowa Speedway.

SPRING, Texas – From 14,115 feet to your mobile device, The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo, will be broadcasting live from America’s Mountain as part of an innovative partnership with the Mobil 1™ brand of advanced synthetic motor oils. The experience, dubbed, “Pikes Peak Live presented by Mobil 1,” will bring fans closer than ever to the racing action, including live commentary, special guests, exclusive giveaways, and more.

Due to the impacts of COVID-19, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will take place without fans for the first time in the hill climb’s history. As a partner going back to 1934, Mobil™ branded products have a proud heritage of performing in the extreme conditions only Pikes Peak can pack into a single run. This year, those runs will be streamed live exclusively on the Mobil 1 Facebook page, providing free unique access for motorsport fans to enjoy the racing action on America’s Mountain from anywhere.

Further fueling the passions of its fans, the livestream will feature play-by-play commentary courtesy of legendary motorsport broadcast announcer, “The Voice,” John Hindhaugh. Hindhaugh serves as the host of Radio Le Mans, and he’ll be bringing that same detailed coverage in his role as master of ceremonies of the “Pikes Peak Live presented by Mobil 1” broadcast. This commentary will extend to welcoming long-term partners of the Mobil 1 brand who have collectively driven millions of miles with Mobil 1 advanced synthetic protecting their engines – some in conditions as extreme as Pikes Peak.

In 2020, Mobil 1 advanced synthetic motor oils will again be an integral part of Porsche Motorsport’s entry in the Porsche Pikes Peak Trophy by Yokohama division. All vehicles competing in the program rely on off-the-shelf Mobil 1 FS 0W-40. Meanwhile eight-time event winner Jeff Zwart will also return to the mountain this year, piloting the new Porsche 935 that features Mobil 1 ESP X3 0W-40 under the decklid. This race car by Porsche is one of only 77 made and will be racing as part of the Time Attack 1 division which pits production-based sports racers against each other.
