Harvick to start on pole at Kansas

For the first time this season, Kevin Harvick will lead the field to the start of a NASCAR Cup Series race after his name was drawn by virtue of a random draw for the pole position for the Super Start Batteries 400 at Kansas Speedway on Thursday, July 23.

Harvick, a three-time winner at Kansas and the current leader of the Cup regular-season standings, is coming off his 700th series career start at Texas Motor Speedway, where he finished fifth. He is one of 10 competitors who is guaranteed a spot in the Playoffs after winning four races throughout this season.

Harvick also becomes the ninth Cup competitor to start on the pole by virtue of a random draw since NASCAR’s return to on-track racing in May amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. His previous best starting spot this season was qualifying second at Phoenix in March prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the pandemic, his best starting spot by the random draw was third at Kentucky Speedway.

Joining Harvick on the front row will be Joey Logano, which marks the eighth time since May where the 2018 Cup champion will start in the top five. Aric Almirola will start third, which marks his ninth time starting in the top five since May, alongside Ryan Blaney while Martin Truex Jr., who swept both Kansas races in 2017, will start fifth. Alex Bowman will start sixth while Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin will start in the top 10. Chase Elliott and Matt DiBenedetto will start 11th and 12th.

Starting in positions 13-26 are Chris Buescher, Matt Kenseth, William Byron, Austin Dillon, Bubba Wallace, Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer, Jimmie Johnson, Erik Jones, rookie Christopher Bell, rookie Tyler Reddick, rookie Cole Custer, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Garrett Smithley.

Starting in positions 27-40 are Michael McDowell, J.J. Yeley, rookie Brennan Poole, rookie John Hunter Nemechek, Corey LaJoie, rookie Quin Houff, Josh Bilicki, Joey Gase, Ryan Preece, Ty Dillon, Daniel Suarez, Timmy Hill, Reed Sorenson and B.J. McLeod.

The Super Start Batteries 400 at Kansas Speedway will commence on July 23 at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN.

Destiny Homes to Sponsor Brett Moffitt at Kansas Speedway

Statesville, N.C. (July 22, 2020) – Destiny Homes is proud to announce the extension of their partnership with Grimes, Iowa native Brett Moffitt and GMS Racing into the 2020 season. This will mark the third consecutive season Iowa-based Destiny Homes has partnered with Brett Moffitt and their second season sponsoring GMS Racing.

Moffitt has had a lot of success with the Destiny Homes colors on Moffitt’s trucks the past two seasons, with back-to-back wins at Iowa Speedway in 2018 and 2019, and a fifth-place effort in last year’s event at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway. Playoffs Bound … On Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway, Dillon survived three late-race restarts to earn the win in the No. 3 Bass Pro Shops/E-Z-GO/Tracker Off Road Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, securing a spot in the 2020 NASCAR Playoffs. His teammate, Tyler Reddick, finished a strong second to create a 1-2 finish for Richard Childress Racing.

1.5-Mile Prowess … Dillon holds the third-best average finish among all drivers on 1.5-mile tracks and has not finished outside of the top-15 on a 1.5-mile track this season.

Talk about the momentum you have heading into Kansas Speedway following a big win at Texas Motor Speedway?
“Kansas Speedway is another mile-and-a-half. Our cars have competed well on mile-and-a-half’s. My teammate, Tyler Reddick, had a pretty good run at Kansas Speedway last year when he made his first NASCAR Cup Series start at the track. My current crew chief, Justin Alexander, was Tyler’s crew chief for that race so we have some good data from that run that we can utilize on Thursday night. I definitely feel like we have momentum, and we can take some chances and try some things now that maybe we wouldn’t have tried if we weren’t locked into the Playoffs.”

What does it take to win in the NASCAR Cup Series?
“You have to execute. We’re doing that much better this year than last year. I’ve studied other drivers, such as Brad Keselowski, who don’t always have the best car but make it happen when it counts. They are constantly battling for track position even if they don’t have the best car. We’re trying to do more of that and put ourselves in more situations to run up front so that we’re comfortable running up there and can make our own race at the end. You have to be aggressive in this sport to win races. I’ve noticed that a lot of the great guys are doing it. We were aggressive with our call at Texas Motor Speedway, maintained our position and won the race.”

Tyler Reddick and the No. 8 I Am Second Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE at Kansas Speedway …Tyler Reddick has one NASCAR Cup Series start at Kansas Speedway, finishing ninth in the No. 31 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 last year for RCR. The finish was Reddick’s first Cup Series top-10 finish in just two series starts. The Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender also has three NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at the 1.5-mile speedway and has not started or finished outside the top-10 in the series. Heading into Kansas Speedway this week, another 1.5-mile speedway, is there anything you can take from the strong run you had at Texas Motor Speedway last weekend?
“I think you can take a little bit from Texas Motor Speedway to Kansas this weekend. Honestly, I haven’t thought much about Kansas Speedway yet, but I’m really excited for the race. We have a lot to be excited about at RCR heading into this weekend following that 1-2 finish. All the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LEs are running really well this year, and we have a lot more speed on the intermediate tracks, so I have a lot of hope heading into this race. Kansas Speedway is a place that has been good for both myself and my crew chief, Randall Burnett. I got my first NASCAR Cup Series top-10 finish there last year during my second Cup Series start, and then we finished second in the Xfinity race there later that year. I’m really looking forward to how the race shakes out and how much the lanes will move around. I think a lot of drivers will try to figure out how to run up high on Thursday night, but I’ll be curious how that affects the tire fall-off and maintaining your speed during a run.”

It’s been almost a whole year since you’ve been behind the wheel of a racecar. How good does it feel to finally be back this weekend, especially with a team like Richard Childress Racing?

What kind of unique challenges does a place like Kansas Speedway present to you and your team this weekend?
“Kansas is a fun track with a lot of different grooves you can use depending on how your car is handling. For me personally, the challenge I’ll be tackling is the fact that I’ve only raced on one 1.5-mile track in the past two years. On top of that, I’ve only ever raced at Kansas once, and that was in a Truck over three years ago. I’ll certainly be using the first half of the race to get acclimated and comfortable out there, but I’m confident that my Richard Childress Racing team and I will be ready to attack and claim a great finish when it comes time.”

What does a panel beater do?  Depending on the type and level of damage they can use of putty fillers for minor repairs and welding or even replacement parts for major damage.  For replacement areas, they will use mechanical, hydraulic, and metalworking equipment to rejoin the repaired parts with welding equipment and plastic fillers.  Replacement parts are made from various metals, including steel and alloys, many different plastics, and even fiberglass, depending on your vehicle.

PLANO, Texas (July 22, 2020) – The NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) kicks off the Kansas Speedway race weekend, which features five races in three days, including the first NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series (NGROTS) doubleheader.

NASCAR National Series – NCS | NXS | NGROTS

Hamlin Most Recent Kansas Winner… Denny Hamlin drove to his fifth win of 2019 last fall at Kansas Speedway, clinching a spot in the Round of 8 before making a Championship 4 appearance. Hamlin is responsible for two of Toyota’s six Cup Series Kansas victories, having also scored Toyota’s first NCS victory at Kansas Speedway in 2012.

Playoff Positioning… With eight races remaining before the NCS Playoffs begin, three Toyota drivers currently hold Playoff positions. Hamlin, on the strength of a series-leading four victories as well as Martinsville winner, Martin Truex Jr., have clinched, while Kyle Busch is currently projected to have a 14th-place positioning based on points. After a solid top-10 finish in Texas, Erik Jones currently sits just 24 points out of securing a Playoff spot for the third straight season.

Jones’ First Win… Brandon Jones will have fond memories as he returns to Kansas Speedway – a place he drove to his first-career NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) victory last fall. Jones led the final 10 laps and survived a final restart to score the win. Since then, Jones added a second NXS victory at Phoenix Raceway in March – marking Toyota’s 500th NASCAR triumph since 2004.

Rookie Candidate Back on Track… Harrison Burton drove to a fourth-place finish at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday afternoon. Burton has scored top-five finishes in half of his NXS starts this season and returns to a track that he drove to a top-10 finish last season in the NGROTS.

Double-Double for the Trucks… The Truck Series drivers gets their first shot at a doubleheader this weekend at Kansas Speedway with races on both Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. Series points leader Austin Hill looks for his first win of the season, while fellow Tundra drivers Christian Eckes (second) and Stewart Friesen (fourth) are coming off of season-best finishes at Texas Motor Speedway.

Graduation Time… Rookie of the Year contender Derek Kraus is skipping his high school graduation to compete in the NGROTS race at Kansas on Friday evening. After his sixth top-15 finish of the season in Texas, the 18-year-old driver sits 11th in the overall point standings – currently just 11 points out of a Playoff spot.

Tundra Strong in Sunflower State… Toyota has won six of the past seven NGROTS events at Kansas Speedway with last week’s Truck Series winner Busch earning two of those victories. Former Tundra drivers Matt Crafton, William Byron and Noah Gragson have also driven to Kansas victory lane. This week, Pocono NGROTS victor Brandon Jones will drive the No. 51 Toyota Tundra in both doubleheader events.

NASCAR Regional Series – ARCA

The Streak Lives On… Ty Gibbs helped extend two streaks with his win at Iowa Speedway – one for himself and one for Toyota. The 17-year-old drove to his third national ARCA Menards Series triumph in the past four events by leading 140 of 150 laps in Iowa. The victory also extends the series-record winning streak for Toyota to 15 consecutive events. Due to age restrictions, Riley Herbst will replace Gibbs and drive the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry at Kansas Speedway in Friday evening’s ARCA event.

Kansas Kind to Self… ARCA Menards Series points leader Michael Self is excited for a second stop this year at Kansas Speedway. The track – which is scheduled to host the season finale – has been very strong for Self. He scored his first career ARCA victory in Kansas in 2017 and has finished top-three in every start at the 1.5-mile track.

Indy 500 Releases 88-Page Detailed Plan To Host Race

Masks To Be Mandatory; Race To Air Live in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (Wednesday, July 22, 2020) – Officials from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway today released a detailed 88-page plan they have put in place to welcome the estimated 25 percent of capacity crowd expected to attend the 104th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge on Sunday, Aug. 23.

Mark Miles, Penske Entertainment Corp. president & CEO, also announced that this year’s race will air live in Indianapolis on NBC, allowing more Hoosiers to watch in real-time from their homes.

“Everything will be different about this year’s race, from the reduced crowd size, to a new distanced seating arrangement, to mandatory masks and a live broadcast throughout Central Indiana,” Miles said. “We will welcome fans to the ‘500’ based on a highly detailed, careful plan that was developed in collaboration with national, state and local health experts.”

The plan was developed over the last four months by a team of Indy officials and national health experts, including Dr. Edward Racht, chief medical officer of Global Medical Response, the largest emergency medical services provider in the nation. It has also been approved by the Marion County Department of Public Health subject to continued review.

“The IMS plan has been developed in consultation with the Marion County Public Health Department and the Indiana State Department of Health, and reflects the current best practices and mitigating steps outdoor venues should have in place to host public events,” Marion County Public Health Department Director Dr. Virginia Caine said. “It meets or exceeds all local guidelines and is approved subject to continued review. I appreciate the serious and collaborative approach IMS has displayed throughout this process.” 

“The IMS plan is detailed and extensive and takes all the right steps to ensure the best measures and precautions are in place,” Indiana State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box said. “Speedway officials have been transparent and communicative throughout this process, and we appreciate the opportunities we’ve had to provide input.”

Highlights of the plan include:

  • Attendance will be at approximately 25 percent.
  • Seats will be reassigned to provide for greater distancing.
  • Masks will be mandated throughout the entire venue, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Everyone will be screened with a contactless thermometer, and individuals with a temperature in excess of 100.4 degrees will be prohibited from entering the Speedway.
  • All drinking fountains and misting stations will be removed.
  • Capacity limits on elevators will be enforced.
  • Options from concession stands will be limited to mostly pre-packaged foods.
  • To reduce crowding, many activities will be eliminated, including all concerts, the VIP Red Carpet and the Indiana Press Foundation’s Last Row Party.
  • To help the venue and community prepare for Indy 500 Race Day, all Saturday activities, including Legends Day at IMS and the downtown 500 Festival Parade, have been canceled. Key 500 Festival programming will transition to digital platforms.
  • Signage will be displayed throughout the venue to encourage healthy practices, and staff will move about the facility to monitor conditions and assist customers.

The plan dives deeply into facility sanitation, cleaning and disinfecting practices, and workforce preparation training and deployment.

“We think it’s important to welcome race fans to the ‘500’ and to demonstrate that America, Indiana and Indianapolis do not need to shut down,” Miles said. “We can and will operate with every precaution we can think of as we welcome fans to the race. We will continue to work with our local and state health officials to ensure we’re doing whatever is necessary to protect our fans.”
