After coming up short two weeks ago at Belle Isle, Tristan Vautier crossed the finish line first in the Milwaukee 100 to give Sam Schmidt Motorsports their 50th Firestone Indy Lights victory. SSM has been around in the series since its inception in 2002, winning five championships.

“It was a great race; we were in control,” Vautier says. “The end was a little harder with the lapped traffic to manage, but awesome day, awesome job from the team. I see my teammate Esteban made it back to the podium so great job from him from sixth and a tough day, so we have two cars on the podium. I didn’t get the 50th pole, but real happy to get the 50th win. What an awesome team.”

Vautier, who started the race from the pole position, held of Team AFS’ Sebastian Saavedra by 0.3370 seconds. It marked the second victory of the season of the season for the driver of the No. 77 Mazda Road to Indy/SSM with Curb-Agajanian car and his fifth top five in six starts.

Meanwhile, Saavedra couldn’t get the run at the end following two restarts.

“For those last 10 laps I was pushing, giving it everything I got,” he says. “The 27 car handled amazing with the Firestone Firehawk tires. I’m not happy because I wanted that first place, but it’s very important points for the championship.”

Vautier’s teammate Esteban Guerrieri, who won the race at Milwaukee last year, finished in third place.

David Ostella finished fourth after making a last lap pass on Carlos Munoz, tying his career best finish after finishing fourth in his debut at St. Petersburg.

“The last 20 laps I was flying out there,” Ostella says. “It is so good to finish a race after coming off of two races where I didn’t finish. Being in the top five is amazing and I can’t take the team enough. They did a wicked job. I’ve been sick all day and fallen asleep between every session. The team worked so hard though to give me a good car. It was an amazing race.”

Vautier now leads the points, three points over Guerrieri as the series heads to Iowa Speedway next weekend.

Chris Buescher Scores First ARCA Speedway Victory at Michigan

[media-credit name=”ARCARacing.com” align=”alignright” width=”265″][/media-credit]After scoring six victories on the short tracks in the span of two years, Chris Buescher led the final 14 laps on his way to his first speedway victory in the RainEater Wiper Blades 200 at Michigan International Speedway.

“That was so cool,” Buescher says. “Hats off to these guys on pit road. We had great stops and the Roulo Brothers car was awesome right off the truck.”

The race was met with tire problems throughout the day as the most drivers could go on a set of tires was 25 to 30 laps. Buescher played the strategy to perfection as he pitted his No. 17 Roulo Brothers Racing Ford with 25 to go.

Then under a caution with 15 to go for Kevin Swindell getting into the wall, Buescher stayed out and assumed the lead as the rest of the leaders pitted, including current leader Alex Bowman. He was then able to cross the finish line 0.054 seconds ahead of Alex Bowman.

“It was a battle right to the end,” Buescher adds. “I had a close call with that lapped car right there at the end. Thanks to Alex Bowman for running us clean. I really appreciate it.”

Cunningham Motorsports’ Bowman came home second after leading 12 laps throughout the day.  Bowman stated after the race that his team will not be able to make the trip to Winchester Speedway due to lack of sponsorship.

“As of right now, we’re done,” Bowman says. “Winchester is next weekend. We’re trying real hard. Everybody knows funding is the name of the game in racing.”

Coulter Motorsports’ Matt Lofton finished third after leading 15 laps, while Brennan Newberry finished fourth in his ARCA debut. Brandon Davis rounded out the top five with a career best finish of fifth.

John Blankenship finished sixth for a career best, followed by Frank Kimmel and Spencer Gallagher. Menards Pole Award winner Joey Coulter finished ninth after leading a couple of laps, while Buster Graham rounded out the top 10.

Points leader Brennan Poole led the first 59 laps, though ran into tire issues and had to make multiple pit stops under green with the first coming at lap 61. He would finish 11th, three laps off the pace. He was able to keep the points lead, now 20 points over Buescher.

Poole wasn’t the only driver who suffered tire problems as so did Coulter, Ryan Reed (who finished 12th), Swindell (finished 14th), Gallagher, Lofton, Buescher and Davis. Though most came home with good finishes after Poole lapped over half the field early in the race.

The race would have it’s big incident of the day on lap three when Nelson Canache spun and both Tom Hessert and Larry Barford Jr. made contact with him afterwards.

“It’s definitely unfortunate for us,” Hessert says. “Looks like the 35 (Canache) car just got into the corner on lap two and spun out. Definatley gives us a tough hit in the points. but it’s a long race so who knows whats going to happen. There’s also a lot of races left this year.”

Under this caution, last week’s second place finisher Chad Hackenbracht would run into problems with the fuel pump and be slow on the apron.

The second caution came out on lap 12 for Jared Marks going for a spin while trying to pass Newberry.

The third caution came out on lap 25 for the competition yellow. ARCA made the decision to put out the competition yellow due to running on a newly paved surface.

The fourth caution came out on lap 40 when rookie Aleks Gregory would get into the wall.

The next race for the ARCA Racing Series is the 200-lap, 100-mile Herr’s Chase the Taste 200 at Winchester Speedway. ARCARacing.com will carry live timing and scoring for practice, qualifying and the race.

Trisan Vautier wins pole for Firestone Indy Lights race at Milwaukee

[media-credit name=”IndyCar.com” align=”alignright” width=”333″][/media-credit]In his second ever oval track start, Tristan Vautier scored his first ever oval track pole. It marked the 51st pole for Sam Schdmit Motorsports (SSM). Vautier won the pole with a two-lap average speed of 146.884 mph.

Vautier started his first ever Indy Lights race from the pole at St. Petersburg earlier this year.

“It feels so good to be on pole for this track because it’s a tough track,” Vautier says. “Our car was awesome this morning. I felt a lot of pressure going into qualifying because I knew we could do it, and I just had to do the job. But there are 100 laps, pole is one point and the race is worth 50 points, so we have a lot of work ahead of us still.”

Currently, Vautier sits second in the series standings to teammate Esteban Guerrieri following five races.

If the 2011 Star Mazda Champion is able to drive his No. 77 Mazda Road to Indy/SSM with Curb Agajanian car to a win tonight, it’ll mark the 50th Indy Lights win for SSM.

Victor Carbone qualified second with a speed of 146.429 mph, followed by Sebastian Saavedra and Carlos Munoz.

There was a 30-minute practice immediately following qualifying, which saw Munoz post the top speed at 140.623 mph. Vautier was second, 0.1857 seconds behind.

The 100-lap race is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. (ET), with real-time Timing & Scoring and the IMS Radio Network broadcast on www.indycar.com.

Josef Newgarden and Justin Wilson Lead IZOD IndyCar Practice at Milwaukee

[media-credit name=”Indycar.com” align=”alignright” width=”333″][/media-credit]In the initial practice for the IZOD IndyCar Series at the Milwaukee Mile, rookie Josef Newgarden topped the charts with a quick lap o 22.0232 seconds in his No. 67 Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing car.

“Milwaukee is a very difficult track physically because you’re constantly turning at a very short radius,” Newgarden said earlier in the week. “There’s a lot of load put on the driver because of how much downforce we run. There’s also no banking at Milwaukee so setting up the car will be difficult to master because it’s unlike any other oval we go to.”

Helio Castroneves was second at 22.1095 seconds while E.J. Viso was third at 22.2776 seconds. The top 21 cars were separated by less than a second.

In the second practice, last week’s race winner Justin Wilson was quickest with a lap of 22.1744 seconds. Newgarden was second at 22.2438 seconds while Castroneves was third. Rubens Barichello, who enters his rookie season in IndyCar after racing Formula 1, was sixth quickest.

Defending race winner Dario Franchitti was 11th in the morning session and 18th in the afternoon session. He won the race last year after starting on the pole.

“With all the problems, it looked like we weren’t going to be coming back to Milwaukee,” Franchitti says. “But we’re back here because of what the IndyCar Series and Michael Andretti and his team did to put this together. It’s great to be back at Milwaukee and this track is one we all love. There’s so much history.

“In order to get Indy car racing back to where it needs to be, we need to be at these places. There are so many things going on for the fans and I think Michael and his team have done a good job and it should be a good event.”

Points leaders Will Power and Scott Dixon both changed motors, therefore suffering a 10-grid starting spot penalty for Sunday’s race. Power was 19h and 13th in the two sessions while Dixon was 10th and ninth.

Single-car qualifications for the Milwaukee IndyFest Presented by XYQ at 5 p.m. (ET). The race is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET on ABC) June 16.
