2011 Circuit ICAR winner Robin Buck caught up in early wreck

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignright” width=”266″][/media-credit]Robin Buck started off the 2012 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season solidly with a top 10 finish at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park last month. He was hoping that when they got to Circuit ICAR, he would continue the early season success as he had won the race last year. However, damage in an incident with another competitor ended his day early.

“It’s a shame to get collected like that, especially that early in the race and when the team worked so hard getting the car back together after the failure in practice,” Buck says.

Looking back at the whole week, it was eventful as a whole for the No. 66 Quaker State team as the problems started in the Saturday practice session as a problem with the transmission sent Buck spinning off the course into a tire barrier.

“We had extensive body damage and some suspension damage to the car,” Buck says.  “But the team went to work and did a remarkable job repairing the car to be ready for the race.”

Buck would start the race in 16th after qualifying was rained out, though quickly made his way up through the field, moving into the top 10. While Buck remained patient, some other drivers weren’t and Buck would get damage in one of the incidents.

“There was a lot of aggressive driving going on,” Buck says.  “It looked like the #21 (Jason White) and the #02 (Kerry Micks) car got together and when they collided in front of us I had nowhere to go.”

Buck will not compete in the ovals this season as his plan is to only run the five road course events. The next road course is the Edmonton City Airport on Sunday July 22nd. It marks a return to the track for the Canadian Tire Series after it was not on the schedule for a couple of years.

Tony Kanaan To Make Third Appearance in Prelude to the Dream at Eldora

[media-credit name=”Ron McQueeney/Indianapolis Motor Speedway” align=”alignright” width=”300″][/media-credit]For the third consecutive year, Tony Kanaan is going to run the Prelude to the Dream at Eldora’s half-mile clay oval on June 6th. Kanaan is fitting the race amongst his busy schedule that includes back-to-back IndyCar race weekends, testing, sponsor appearances and meetings.

“It’s always a pleasure to come back, and unfortunately we don’t have a lot of time to test,” Kanaan says. “I can’t thank (track owner and event organizer) Tony (Stewart) enough for inviting me. I always enjoy it and look forward to it again.”

The 2004 IZOD IndyCar Series Champion ran road and street courses and a variety of ovals, though his first dirt race was three years ago in this event. He finished 24th in his first outing and finished 27th last year.

“It’s only two times that I’ve raced those cars on that type of track, but my mentality is to have fun and get INDYCAR out there in an environment that’s not ours,” he comments.

The Prelude to the Dream is an event that has stars from a different arrange of racing backgrounds drive 2,300 dirt Late Models. NASCAR, NHRA, ARCA and IndyCar drivers come together to raise money for Feed The Children, a U.S.-based charity that has helped over 365,000 families since 2009. The money is raised by selling tickets to the even, fans paying to watch the race through HBO pay-per-view and donations on top of that. This will mark the eighth year that Tony Stewart has hosted this event.

This year’s event will include hot laps, qualifying, heat races and a 40-lap feature with double-file restarts.

“We have the most diverse group of drivers we’ve ever had for the Prelude, and for the first time, the Prelude will be broadcast in high-definition,” Stewart says. “This year’s event is going to be a can’t-miss show. We’ve added 10 laps to the feature and partnered with a great charity in Feed The Children.”

Most drivers are returning from previous years of running, while others are trying it for the first time, including Danica Patrick.

The commercial-free broadcast begins at 8 p.m. (ET) with an immediate replay. Order at eitherwww.PreludeToTheDream.org or www.HBO.com. Ticketsare available online at www.EldoraSpeedway.com or by calling (937) 338-3815.

Kraig Kinser Notches First Win of Season at Kokomo

[media-credit id=30 align=”alignright” width=”211″][/media-credit]Tonight the World of Outlaw Sprints were back in Kokomo, Indiana for the third round of the Kasey Kahne Challenge. The Outlaws are returning to Kokomo for the first time since 2007.

Steve Kinser, who leads the current championship standings, has claimed a series-best six feature wins at the quarter-mile oval. However, there has been a different winner in each of the past six World of Outlaws events at Kokomo Speedway dating back to 1993.

Kokomo Speedway is a fast, 1/4 mile semi-banked clay oval. Over the years the track has played host to virtually a who’s who in racing history. A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Lloyd Ruby, Troy Ruttman, Johnny Parsons, Parnelli Jones, Bill Vuckovich, Pancho Carter, John Andretti, Steve Butler, J.J. Yeley, Steve Kinser, Jack Hewitt, Rich Vogler, Tom Bigelow, Tony Stewart and Mike Groff are among those who have both raced at the track as well as in the Indianapolis 500.

Sprint Cup standouts like Ryan Newman, Jeff Gordon, Ken Schrader, Kasey Kahne, Yeley, Stewart and Dave Blaney are just a few who have visited the track over the years.

A record setting crowd for Kokomo Speedway would see a new track record set by Sammy Swindell in qualifying, with a lap of 10.950 or 82.192 mph shattering the old record of 11.021 set in September of 2006 by Jeremy Campbell.

The 31 car field ran 3 heat races that each transferred 6 to the A Main and 2 to the Dash. The first heat was red flagged for repairs to the catch fence in turns 1 and 2 when Geoff Dodge got up into the wall and damaged the catch fence with his right rear tire. Dodge would retire until the B Main. The first heat would be won by Joey Saldana with Sammy Swindell coming home second. Kyle Larson, Brad Sweet, Brady Bacon and Brian Paulus would also transfer to the A Main.

The second heat race would see Daryn Pittman coming home first with Lucas Wolfe a very close 2nd. Craig Dollansky, Dale Blaney, Cap Henry and Steve Kinser would round out the transfer list.

The third heat would see 4 time champion Donny Schatz leading the way across the stripe with Kerry Madsen close behind. Bill Rose had a great night coming home third. Kraig Kinser, Cody Darrah and Sheldon Haudenschild would round out the transfer list.

The Dash inversion was drawn by fast time holder Sammy Swindell. The inversion was a 6 putting Swindell on the outside of the 3rd row to start the 10 lap dash. In the end, it would be Joey Saldana on the pole of the A Main with team mate, Brad Sweet to the outside.

The B Main was a fast moving highly contested event that would see Chad Kemenah come home in the lead. Transfering the top 6 with the top 4 getting their time back and the last 2 starting tail of the A Main, Kody Kinser, Austen Wheatly, Randy Hannagan, Logan Schuchart and Danny Smith would transfer to the A.

With the field set it was time to determine the king of Kokomo. The A Main took 3 tries to get going. Red Flagged on the first lap for Brian Paulus’ wild roll in turn 3 and then under yellow for a 3 car spin out of 4 that would collect Brady Bacon, Sheldon Haudenschild and Cody Darrah. The 40 lap feature proved to be one of the most exciting of the year with Kraig Kinser taking the lead just before lap 20 and holding off a hard charging Craig Dollansky in tight traffic for his first win of the 2012 season. Dale Blaney would advance from 17th to 4th to win the KSE Hard Charger award. Points leader Steve Kinser would come home 7th and second place points man Donny Schatz would finish in 6th.

Kokomo proved to be another difficult night for Sammy Swindell who ended up on his roof before half way in the A Main while racing with Brad Sweet for 4th.

Kokomo reassured us that big things do indeed come in small packages and small packages should never be under estimated. The mighty wings of the outlaws once again put on a show that was second to none. And although the king of Kokomo remains the King of the Outlaws it obviously runs in the blood. Congratulations to Kraig Kinser and everyone at Steve Kinser Racing on their first win of the season.

FedEx 400 Review: Predictions and Previews

Self Inflicted Bad Luck for Gordon

Jeff Gordon undoubtedly had the fastest car in the field on Sunday and even led a portion of the FedEx 400. After pit stops with about 150 laps to go, Gordon had to pit again for a loose wheel, forcing him to give up his lead position.

Gordon still had a good chance to win the race, after putting himself in the lead by four seconds, even after the loose wheel. Unfortunately for Gordon, being on a different pit cycle than the rest of the field, he had to pit with 76 laps to go. For Gordon to find the lead again, he needed the rest of the field to pit under green to cycle back around as the leader.

A caution flag waving 16 laps later for debris made it nearly impossible for Gordon to get back to the lead. Gordon did put himself back on the lead lap, but finished a disappointing 13th position.

[media-credit name=”Patrick McDermott/Getty Images” align=”alignright” width=”300″][/media-credit]”The fastest car doesn’t always win the race,” Gordon said. “And we’re sitting here in 13th, or whatever — it’s silly. It’s always more frustrating when you’ve got a car that can win, and you show it by going up there and taking the lead.

“We don’t care about finishing top-15 or top-10 right now. That does nothing for us. We need wins.”

Gordon did gain one position in points, moving to 21st position, but is still 175 points behind the leader.

My view on Gordon’s bad luck this season is – every driver has an off season. This season is Gordon’s off season. He is a four-time champion of the Cup series and his bad luck can’t continue for long. For Gordon to make the Chase, he has to have wins now. The five upcoming races are tracks that Gordon can and has won at before.

Next week we head to Pocono Raceway where Gordon won just last year and has four previous wins at. He has scored two wins at Michigan International Speedway; five wins at Infineon Raceway; and 6 wins at Daytona International Speedway. He has not won at Kentucky Speedway, where the Cup series just started racing at last season; however, Gordon did finish in 10th position in the Quaker State 400 in 2011.

Earnhardt Improves Stats at Dover

Before the running of Sunday’s FedEx 400, Dale Earnhardt Jr. had not finished in the Top 10 at Dover International Speedway since September of 2007. Earnhardt Jr’s fourth-place finish on Sunday marks the 10th time in 13 races this season that he has finished in the Top 10. With this finish, Earnhardt has gained one spot in points standings moving to third, only 10 points behind the leader.

After starting in 17th position, Earnhardt reached the Top 10 in less than 100 laps. By the middle of the race, he was in the Top 5, where he ran the rest of the day.

“We are getting close,” Earnhardt said after finishing in fourth position. “We are finishing good when we are not winning. I can’t complain too much about how we are doing. We’ve got some tricky tracks coming up for us. The summer months aren’t really my thing, the tracks at least, but hopefully we can have some more good runs.”

Next weekend at Pocono mark four years and 143 races that Earnhardt has gone without a win. However, this is only his second season working with crew chief Steve Letarte, and we have already seen vast improvement among the team in 2012. With tracks that Earnhardt has won at coming up on the schedule – Daytona and Michigan – I expect Earnhardt to get his first win of the season soon.

Predictions for Pocono

Like I said before, Gordon’s luck will turn around; and what better track for him to do that at than Pocono? Gordon is the reigning winner of last year’s race and has four wins under his belt at this track. He has also scored two pole starting position here in 98’ and 96’.

“Bad” Brad Keselowski, who won last year’s fall race at Pocono can’t ever be counted out to win any race. Keselowski is sitting comfortably in 11th position in points, 86 points behind the leader, and is looking to get his third win of the season.

When NASCAR comes to Pocono, all eyes are on four-time winner, Denny Hamlin. Hamlin is the master of the tricky triangle, where he swept both races here in 2006 starting from the pole. He knows how to get the job done at this track and is eyeing the points lead, sitting in fourth position, just 22 points behind the leader.

[media-credit name=”Doug Pensinger/Getty Images” align=”alignright” width=”305″][/media-credit]The not-so underdogs of the race would have to be Greg Biffle and Kasey Kahne. Biffle is the current point’s leader of the Cup standings and has one win at this track in 2010. Kahne, who won the race from the pole in 2008, is on a role from his win at Charlotte Motor Speedway two weeks ago. He has finally gotten the bad luck off of his shoulders and is ready to gain points and rise from his 14th position in standings.

Last but not least, you can’t count out five-time champ Jimmie Johnson who is still beaming from scoring Hendrick’s 200th win at Darlington. Johnson has won at Pocono twice in his career and has started on the pole twice at this track. He is currently sitting fifth position in points, 33 points behind the leader.

Jimmie Johnson: The hair really brought some speed to the team

[media-credit id=26 align=”alignright” width=”292″][/media-credit]Well some may have been looking at the wigs on the heads of the No. 48 Lowes team laughing, Johnson says it was a magic piece to their success.

“I’m just proud of this hair,” he says. “The hair really brought some speed to the team.  I could see our engine tuner who is catching the front tires that came across on pit stops, and I got a laugh every time I came on to pit road.”

While the hair may have been there for jokes to go with the promotion of Madagascar 3, there’s no joking matter about the success of the No. 48 team over the past couple of weeks. In the span of four races including the All-Star race, they have three wins. They also won the pit crew challenge a couple weeks ago, which they displayed those skills with fast stops all day.

“Clearly we had a fast race car, amazing pit stops,” Johnson says. “Strategy, when you lead the most laps, sometimes at the end the way the cautions fall it can backfire on the dominant car, and the way cautions fell today, it allowed us to really flex our muscle and bring home the win.”

In total, Johnson led 289 of the 400 laps on the way to his 57th career victory in 376 starts. It also marked his seventh win at Dover, tying Bobby Allison and Richard Petty for the most career wins at Dover.

“It’s just a huge honor,” Johnson says. “I’m never one that paid attention to stats.  I truthfully never thought I would be a guy that would build up any cool stats and here I am with some pretty cool stats.  With legends of our sport and guys that I’ve looked up to.”

The chassis that the No. 48 team was running was a brand new chassis, which showcased all of the research and development by the Hendrick Motorsports team lately to make their cars as fast as needed.

“We came off the truck and we were real fast right off the box,” crew chief Chad Knaus says. “We were trying a different set up and Jimmie felt like we needed to do something different.  He made a big call personally for us to shift the setup in the race car and we did and he felt like it was some big changes. So we had to significantly change the race car once we got here.  First in qualifying, Jimmie did a great job with the car then and that led us down the path we were today.  Man, it went great.  It went really well.  It was a lot of fun.”

Knaus adds that it showcases the effort that the Hendrick Motorsports team is putting in to have the cars ready, from top to bottom, since the sport is ever-changing and it’s difficult to stay on top.

“To get to where we are, a solid three or four weeks for Hendrick Motorsports is nice,” he adds.

The 200th win for Hendrick Motorsports at Darlington Raceway last month released the string of success that they’ve been on, but Johnson says he doesn’t think the win had anything to do with reliving any pressure.

“We, of course, wanted to be the team to win the 200 for Rick, but we didn’t sit there and obsess over it and talk about it,” Johnson says. “We were really so close since really the start of the year to Victory Lane.  We were more focused on our deal and not making mistakes, and continuing with the technical side of the race car that has given us the speed that we are finding right now.”

Johnson adds it was about refining their package and not making mistakes, which everything just so happened to come together at Darlington to put the win together. He then continues on to say that since, they’ve been flawless and had the speed to continue the string.

Well this may have the No. 48 team looking like championship favourites for their sixth championship, Johnson says it’s too early to talk about the championship.

“I mean, we are doing the things right now that will win one, but we need to do this in September and on,” Johnson says. “You know, it’s nice to have the success right now because the last two years, we have been working very hard in a lot of areas and when you have success and continued success, you narrow down your focus in where you need to be.”

He says right now he’s just concentrated on making the Chase and the two victories put him in good contention to do that.

“We need to keep the pressure on and roll into September with the same thing going on in order to win a championship,” Johnson continues. “When you look at what Tony and Carl went through last year, that’s a perfect example.  You just don’t show up and think everything is going to turn out as you hoped.  You have to get in there and race hard for all ten races.”

June – A month of unknowns

[media-credit name=”Ed Coombs” align=”alignright” width=”248″][/media-credit]As NASCAR continues in the month of June, a lot of unknowns develop. We travel to newly repaved Pocono Raceway this week and then next week we go to the newly repaved Michigan International Speedway.

As we go to Pocono, the newly repaved surface develops some questions, and Michigan is expecting speeds of 210+ MPH going in to turn one.  What kind of speeds are we going to see? Is there going to be a preferred line now with the newly repaved surface? Will the action at Pocono be different than before?

During a test session earlier this year, we saw faster speeds at Pocono but not much of a different style of racing. Another question is what drivers will be successful at the tricky triangle? Drivers like Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gordon, and Tony Stewart have been successful there in the past but now with the new surface, we could see some new drivers finding the key to success.  All of these questions will be answered this Sunday on TNT.

When we go to Michigan in a week, we still have many unknowns there also. What speeds are we going to see? In the test session, Kyle Busch tweeted that he sailed into turn one at a whopping 219 MPH. Will there be any change in the racing? Will drivers take more risks? All of these questions will be answered shortly as the first race date at Michigan approaches.

Those two races don’t take up the entire month.

After Michigan we head to the west coast for the first road course race of the season at Sonoma. The track has given us surprises every year. Different drivers have been able to get a victory at Sonoma but some big names like Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards and Denny Hamlin have never been to victory lane there yet. Juan Pablo Montoya has his only career victory there in 2007, so he could be a threat. Marcos Ambrose has been ever so close to victory there but never able to close the deal. Road course ringers look to come in and spoil the cup regular’s party but that hasn’t happened in years.

The final race in the month of June is at Kentucky. This is only the second race ever at Kentucky for the Sprint Cup Series, so there are many unknowns going into that race. The two things that I remember from last year’s inaugural race at Kentucky were; Kyle Busch winning and all the traffic problems that kept some fans from going to the race. Kyle Busch is the only driver to find success there so far, so he might have a slight edge on the rest of the field. The traffic problems have been fixed by money-man Bruton Smith. Smith essentially threw money at the speedway and the speedway updated and expanded its parking areas.

The sell-out crowd from last year likely won’t return but we’ll still see a great crowd. As June continues, we’ll see our questions answered but right now there all still a mystery. The month should provide lots of fireworks and excitement. I expect lots of changing things in the Sprint Cup Series by the end of the month like, the point’s standings and the wild card standings. Stay tuned in for the NASCAR action all month long.
