Time for a No Tolerance

A DUI is one of the worst offenses a NASCAR driver can have. Drivers who are suppose to set an example on how to drive correctly and safely, driving under the influence and risking people’s lives. Add that to a fan base that doesn’t see brushes with the law much, a DUI is unacceptable.

[media-credit name=”michaelannett.com” align=”alignright” width=”181″][/media-credit]The latest ordeal of a DUI in NASCAR belongs to 24 year old Michael Annett, who currently races in the Nationwide Series for Rusty Wallace Inc. Annett was pulled over early Sunday morning with a blood alcohol content of .32, four times the legal limit. This is one of a few incidents NASCAR drivers have had with drinking and driving.

Though never convicted of any wrong doing, Michael Waltrip found himself in two situations in the last 4 years. The most recent one said that Waltrip blew a .06, under the legal limit after Waltrip collided with a motorcycle at an intersection. The other incident however, ended up with Waltrip wrecking his SUV early in the morning and walking home in his socks. When police found Waltrip in his home the next morning, he blew a .06, under the legal limit. Both incidents saw no action taken by NASCAR.

AJ Allmendinger was stopped for a DWI. Allmendinger who blew .08. Allmendinger was placed on probation by the sport until Dec. 31.

Now here is Michael Annett, a 24 year old driver whose career has had its ups and downs. He moved from Germain Racing to Rusty Wallace Incorporated for the 2011 season. Annett situation is very similar to something NASCAR has seen before.

For folks who remember, 1990 was a devastating year for the sport. That’s when rising star 21 year old Rob Moroso was killed in a similar situation to Annett’s. Moroso was killed when his motorcycle veered into oncoming traffic. Both Moroso and the victim in the other car were killed due to the incident. The autopsy revealed that Moroso’s BAC was .22, which at the time was two times over the legal limit of .10. Moroso’s story is a perfect example of a promising young life and career thrown away by stupidity.

NASCAR has a zero tolerance for drugs, now it’s time for a zero tolerance with DUI’s. NASCAR is one of the few sports left without the problems of their players getting in trouble with the law. Baseball, football and basketball have all had their troubles with players breaking the law; no one wants to see NASCAR get like that.

It’s time for NASCAR to nip this in the bud. Stop putting it in the owner’s hands to suspend drivers. Suspending Michael Annett would be good for him and the sport. It’s time for John Darby and Robin Pemberton to step up and do the right thing.

A no tolerance is called for. Not only would the sport benefit from it, but it would make everyone stop doing it. In the NFL, if you are out at a bar and you feel like you have had too much to drink you can call a number and the league will send a limo to pick you up and bring you back to the hotel room. If a player is found guilty of DUI they receive a four to six game suspension. Why should NASCAR be any different?

I am not even asking for that. Annett easily could have called a cab on his way home Sunday. Instead, he did the careless act. Annett wasn’t only careless for himself and the other drivers on the road, but careless to his fans, family and the sport all together.

It’s time for these drivers to grow up and realize how good they have it. Some make millions to drive a car everyweek. This writer and a lot of readers alike, would kill to have that chance. Acts like that show they don’t care.

Rusty Wallace is in a touch situation. Pilot Travel Centers is Annett’s main sponsor for 2011, a company that has supported Annett throughout his career. If Rusty Wallace suspends the driver he may not have sponsorship for his second car something that may kill a small owner like Wallace.

NASCAR can do it though. Dave Moody has said it best “NASCAR can do whatever they want.” Thank you!  It’s time for John Darby, Robin Pemberton, Mike Helton and Brian France to step up to the table and show that there is integrity in this sport and acts like that will not be tolerated, before we have another Rob Moroso incident to deal with.

EXPRESS NOTES:

Hamlin in the Budweiser Shootout:  Saturday’s Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway will mark Denny Hamlin’s sixth start in the non-points, pre-season exhibition event.  Hamlin earned a lifetime invitation into the race with a Bud Shootout victory in his very first try as a rookie in 2006.  The Chesterfield, Va., native captured a pole at Phoenix in 2005 — a year he made just seven Cup starts — to gain entry into the 2006 Shootout under the old format, an opportunity he took full advantage of.  Driver eligibility for 2011 is based on Chase participants from 2010, past NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champions, former Bud Shootout winners, points race winners at Daytona and Sprint Cup Series ‘Rookie of the Year’ winners from the previous 10 seasons.  As the 2006 Bud Shootout winner, 2006 ‘Rookie of the Year’ and a 2010 Chase participant, Hamlin is more than qualified to compete Saturday night. Hamlin finished fifth in the 2010 Shootout, behind winner Kevin Harvick, Kasey Kahne, Jamie McMurray and Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch.  It marked his best finish in the event since his 2006 victory. Starting order for Saturday’s event will be determined by a blind draw Friday night, with Hamlin’s best “qualifying effort” of fifth coming in 2009.  He started 24th one year ago.  Hamlin has led a total of 20 laps in Bud Shootout competition — 16 in 2006 and four in 2009.

HAMLIN CONVERSATION – BUDWEISER SHOOTOUT:

What are your thoughts heading into the Budweiser Shootout?

“The Shootout is a fun event and it’s a race that we all want to win. It’s unique because you aren’t worrying about points, about how it’s going to affect your season. You’ll probably see guys try things in the Shootout that you won’t see in the 500 but it’s a short race and the format means that there is nothing to lose at the end. I think that’s what the fans like about this race.   We just go out there and race.”

What is your outlook for the 2011 season?

“I’m ready to go.  I feel as confident as we’ve ever been.  Every year we’ve steadily made a progression towards the top and obviously had a career year last year.  We know we can do it and we can win at all different kinds of race tracks.  For me, I think we have everything in place.  I’m keeping all of my key personnel from what we had last year.  No changes there.  Pit crew is the same.  The driver will be a little bit better.  Everything is in place to hopefully pull out a first one.”

Are you the driver to unseat Jimmie Johnson this year?

“I hope so. This is almost a free year for me. A lot of people are going to expect us to have a bad year coming off such a good year, because the expectations were so high last year.  We came through and succeeded in winning a bunch of races like we said we were.  We were championship contenders — almost won the championship.  And this year, a lot of people expect a letdown year because it’s happened to guys before. For me, I know my passion for racing, and it’s impossible for me to fail in that aspect. Unless something crazy happens, we’re going to be right back in the same position this year as what we were last year.”

How do you feel about the new points system?

“I think (NASCAR) hit it right on the head.  I really don’t think they could’ve made it any simpler for the new race fan coming into the sport or the driver that knows he’s 10 points behind.  He’s got to pass 10 cars.  It makes things so much simpler and for me it’s well understood.  I think it’s going to reward those guys that go out and win during the regular season.  It’s going to give you three bonus points.  That’s three spots — that’s like 15 points going into the Chase versus last year’s 10.  It’s going to pay to win races nowadays.”

Does the new points system change your strategy?

“I think you’re going to have to run it the exact same way. The only difference is that wins are obviously going to pay more points. I like it. Of course, we won a lot of races last year. If we don’t win any going into the Chase this year, I’m not going to like it that much, but it should pay the guy that wins. You should see a battle — a guy that’s giving it all he’s got running second trying to win the race. I think NASCAR set that up for us, teed it up for us, and now it’s up to us to go out there and put on the show.”

How do you put last year behind you to focus on 2011?

“Nothing fuels me more than losing. We’re all competitors and each one of us knows that when you finish second, it’s fuel. It doesn’t matter what sport I’m in — if I lose, I’m going to work to try to be better at it. For racing, it’s my number one passion and my number one focus to try to be the best at. We’ve gotten close to the top, we just need one more position. And I consider anything less than a championship a failure. A lot of guys will say that, but for me, finishing second in points, there’s no other room to go up other than winning a championship. Taking a step back is finishing any worse than I did last year.”

NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski returns to home state of Michigan in support of MIS

Rochester Hills, Mich. native receives legislative proclamation from State Senate

[media-credit name=”Pattrick Yockey, Senate Majority Communications Office” align=”alignright” width=”220″][/media-credit]BROOKLYN, Mich. (Feb. 8, 2011) — NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Brad Keselowski made a trip back to his home state of Michigan on Tuesday in support of Michigan International Speedway and the beginning of the 2011 NASCAR race season.

Keselowski paid a visit to Troppo Restaurant in Lansing, Mich. during MIS’ second Season Kick Off, which featured a variety of fans, media and partners. The fans ranged from long-time MIS ticket holders to first-time buyers in 2011.

“MIS is an unbelievable place,” Keselowski said. “I am fortunate to have won back-to-back Nationwide Series races at MIS and will look to defend that race win in June this year. However, we would also really like to win at MIS in the Sprint Cup Series. I love coming back to Michigan and helping out with these events any way I can.”

MIS, and its president Roger Curtis, discussed many of its initiatives for 2011 including its Fan Appreciation Program, now in its third year, the upcoming Budweiser Shootout Viewing Party at FireKeepers Casino on Feb. 12, qualifying moving to Saturday in June and the Great Lakes Wine Fest, which will take place on May 21 at the speedway.

An update of the track’s capital improvement projects was given. Most of the three grandstands between turns 3 and 4 have been taken down. Work has also begun to widen the pedestrian tunnel under the frontstretch of the track. Partners FireKeepers Casino and new ARCA Racing Series race sponsor RainEater Wiper Blades were on hand and participated in the Q&A format.

“It’s important to continue to update our fans, media and partners on what we are doing at MIS and how these initiatives are continuing to make our track a must-see event on the Sprint Cup Series race schedule for our fans.”

Keselowski also talked about his new Checkered Flag Foundation, which is to support military personnel, veterans, first-responders and others who were wounded in combat or in the line of duty. The program hosted its first event, the Wounded Warrior Day, at MIS in August of 2010 and followed up with similar events later in the season.

Keselowski was also honored at the State Capitol with a legislative proclamation on the Senate floor from 12th District Michigan Senator Jim Marleau of Lake Orion, which represents Keselowski’s native Rochester Hills, a suburb of Detroit. Keselowski received the honor for winning his first Nationwide Series championship and giving back to his local Michigan community.

“Brad is very deserving of this honor,” Curtis said. “He has become a very successful driver in NASCAR and has done a lot for his home state and given back in so many ways. It was nice to see our state government honor him today for those efforts and achievements.”

Nestled in the lush Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, Michigan International Speedway is the Great Escape, a venerable NASCAR national park where fans can get away and enjoy the very best in racing and camaraderie. It’s the love of racing and the thrill of a great time for race fans and drivers alike.

MIS’ Value Pricing ends on February 28. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series tickets for the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 on June 19 and NSCS 400 on August 21 are as low as $25. Visit MISpeedway.com or call the MIS ticket hotline at 800-354-1010 today to take advantage of great pricing for 2011 events at MIS.

This will be Roush Fenway’s 23rd consecutive year with at least one car in the Shootout. The team made its debut in the Shootout (then the Busch Clash) in 1989 with the No. 6 Ford of Mark Martin. During that span Roush Fenway has fielded 45 entries in the Shootout, posting 11 top-five and 26 top-10 finishes, including one victory and two runner-up finishes. All in all Roush Fenway has fielded multiple cars in the Shootout 12 times, with nine different drivers behind the wheel.

Roush Fenway Racing boasts one victory in the Shootout, with Mark Martin taking the checkered flag in the 1999 all-star event.

HOW THEY QUALIFIED
Each of the 12 qualifying Chase drivers from last season are included, as well as past champions and Daytona winners. Edwards, Kenseth and Biffle each qualify for the Shootout via their Chase status in ‘10, when they finsihed fourth, fifth and sixth in the final point standings.

LAST SEASON
Roush Fenway ran strong in last seaon’s shootout; Carl Edwards dominated the first third of the race (leading 42 laps), Greg Biffle led the event with two laps to go and Kenseth was third late, but all three Roush Fenway Fords were caught up in a last-lap accident and finished 15th-17th (Biffle, Kenseth, Edwards).

Greg Biffle’s 44 laps led in the 2005 Shootout are the most by a driver who did not win the event and the second most ever. Edwards 42 laps led last year, is the second most by a driver not winning the event.

ROUSH FENWAY AT DAYTONA
In addition to the 1999 Shootout win, Roush Fenway has posted three other wins at DIS in Sprint Cup competition. Most recently in 2009 in the famed Daytona 500 with Matt Kenseth, and 2007 and 2003 summer races with Jamie McMurray and Greg Biffle. Hal Martin Announces Sponsorship for ARCA Series Slick Mist 200 at Daytona

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignleft” width=”220″][/media-credit]Hal Martin Announced that NOLA Motorsports Park would adorn the sides of his No. 55 Venturini Motrsports Toyota for the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday.

“I’ve done a lot of preparation coming into this race – it’s the most important race of the year,” Martin said in a press release. “I couldn’t ask for a better fit for sponsorship, because NOLA Motorsports Park is an up-and-coming race track in my local area. I’m an up and coming driver in the ARCA (Racing) Series, and I look to prove that even more on the track. We had a very successful team outing at the test in January, and I’m confident that we made the right setup changes with the small details to make us strong. Competition is going to be heavy – so I’m ready to roll with NOLA Motorsports Park and the signature ‘Speed De Lis’ on the hood!”

NOLA Motorsports Park is a venue that features the longest road course in North America, placed just 20 minutes from the framed New Orlands French Quarter, that brings traditional racing versus the family-oriented track facilities you see today.

“What a talent Hal Martin is,” said Mitch Wright, general manager of NOLA Motorsports Park. “We’re so excited to be able to support a local Louisiana racer with his caliber of talent. It’s a rare thing – you can count the number of successful drivers on one hand from our area. That’s what makes it special, and it also lends a great spotlight to what we’re trying to do, which is also rare. Bringing the longest road course in North America, as well as elite-style racing to families in greater New Orleans and Louisiana as a whole, is also something that is special.”

In total, Martin plans to enter five races with Venturini Motorsports this season – Talladega, Chicagoland, Pocono and Michigan. He has driven for Venturini Motorsports in the past as he drove the No. 35 to a 10th place finish last year at Talladega.

For now, Martin is focused on the upcoming race at Daytona and being ready for it. He was quick during test, in the top five all three days, and has been working out to be ready for Daytona.

“I’ve been doing a lot of prep work in general, getting ready for Daytona,” Martin told the ARCA Racing Network. “My workout routine has included a lot of endurance training to simulate the grueling weight this type of race can have on my body.  I’ve also done a lot of weight training.  Studying old ARCA races for the draft has helped too  – as an engineer, I’m hyper specific on my lines and my efficiency.  The computer simulator has also become my best friend – running Daytona and Talladega to get used to running in the big packs again.  I just can’t wait to get on track and hammer down.”

If Martin could pull off the win, it’d be the first win for Venturini Motorsports at Daytona, despite how strong their cars have been.

“We have finished second in everything they have in Daytona Beach,” said Billy Venturini. “We have not won hardly anything, but we have finished second. If they had a potato sack race, we would finish second in the thing. Every year we have run well, and over the last few years we have gained the reputation for the best superspeedway program. It is time, which this year we capitalize and win.”

RCR Event Preview — Daytona International Speedway

Race:                 Budweiser Shootout

                          February 12, 2011

Location:           Daytona International Speedway

Richard Childress Racing

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race Notes:

Seven Shootout Wins for RCR …RCR has earned seven checkered flags in the Budweiser Shootout — 1986, 1988, 1991, 1993 and 1995 with driver Dale Earnhardt and 2009 and 2010 with driver Kevin Harvick– and has had an entry in 24 of the 32 races.

Three to Get Ready … RCR will field entries for Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton and Kevin Harvick in this year’s exhibition event. This is the third consecutive season that the Welcome, N.C.-based organization has had multiple entries in the Budweiser Shootout’s 32-race history.

RCR’s Invite … Bowyer, Burton and Harvick became eligible for the 33rd annual season-opening event by being 2010 Chase for the Sprint Cup contenders and/or past race winners at Daytona International Speedway. While all three RCR drivers made the Chase in 2010, Burton visited Daytona’s Victory Lane in July 2000 while Harvick captured the checkers in the 2007 Daytona 500 and the 2009 and 2010 Budweiser Shootout races. The new qualifying rule will showcase a strong line-up of drivers who were last season’s top performers and previous race winners at the sport’s most-storied race track. Rookie of the Year honorables are also invited to compete. The star-studded field will compete in two segments, 25 and 50 laps, with a 10-minute pit stop between to allow teams to visit pit road should they elect to change tires, add fuel and make chassis adjustments.

Qualifying Draw … Budweiser’s annual Draw Party will take place Friday, February 11 at the SPEED stage located outside of the Turn 4 tunnel. All three RCR drivers, along with other eligible competitors, will draw their respective starting position for Saturday night’s Budweiser Shootout. This year’s Draw Party will be televised on SPEED beginning at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

Catch the Action … Flag-to-flag coverage of the Budweiser Shootout will be televised live Saturday, February 6, beginning at 8 p.m. EST on FOX and will be broadcast worldwide on the Motor Racing Network and Sirius XM Satellite Radio.

Race Notes and Quotes

This Week’s Budweiser Chevrolet at Daytona International Speedway … Kevin Harvick will pilot Chassis No. 334 from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stable in this weekend’s Budweiser Shootout.  This No. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet was built in-house by the Gil Martin-led No. 29 team over the winter months and will make its first competitive laps around the speedway this weekend.

Career Stats … Harvick makes his seventh appearance in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season-opener during Speedweeks. In six Budweiser Shootout starts at the 2.5-mile tri-oval, Harvick has claimed two victories, four top-five and five top-10 finishes. Additionally, the Bakersfield, Calif., native has earned a 16.8 starting average and a 6.8 finishing average.

King of Beers … Harvick hits the track with a brand new sponsor and paint scheme for the 2011 season, as Budweiser joins RCR and the No. 29 team. Harvick’s black and red Chevrolet Impala will make its debut this Saturday night in one of NASCAR’s wildest events of the year.

Winner, Winner … Harvick has enjoyed quite a bit of success in previous years at Daytona’s big-dollar shootout, and this year he will contend for his third consecutive Budweiser Shootout title.  Harvick won his first title in 2009, competing against the largest field ever recorded. A win in the 2010 event added another notch in Harvick’s belt, making him the defending champ two years in a row.

Introducing the Crew … Harvick debuts a new pit crew for the Budweiser Shootout. The No. 29 team’s 2011 pit crew includes two veterans from the 2010 crew, along with new front- and rear-tire changers and carriers and a new jackman.

Super Weekend …Harvick spent his last weekend before the 2011 season cheering on the Green Bay Packers. Joining his new sponsor Budweiser, Harvick traveled to Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas for Super Bowl XLV. He stopped by FOX’s Super Bowl Red Carpet pre-game show to talk about NASCAR’s Super Bowl, the Daytona 500.

KEVIN HARVICK QUOTES:

Talk about your new primary sponsorship with Budweiser.

“It’s been fun to be a part of all the Budweiser stuff and see the car on the race track. The photo shoots have been pretty cool, because Budweiser is such an iconic brand not only in our sport, but around the world. It makes it a lot easier to promote a product that you actually like, so it’s been fun to be normal and just hangout.”

You won races last year, you led the regular season points and you came close to winning the championship. You must have some pretty high goals for this season?

“I think when you look at everything and where we are, racing for the championship is really what it’s all about. We want to win a championship trophy. Coming so close last year, I think we learned a lot, from the mind set, to the expectation level that you need to set for yourself, to the preparation that goes into everything for those last 10 weeks. It’s very important to be able to maintain that level of competitiveness throughout those last 10 weeks. We know what that feels like now, and we’ve done that better than we ever have before. We just have to keep doing the things that we’re doing. We have to make our pit crew better. That’ll help us a lot. If we do the same things we did last year and we improve on pit road, we’ll win more races.”

Paul Menard joined RCR’s roster of drivers. What has it been like having him as a fourth team member?

“Obviously, with Paul coming here, he’s a good guy first off and easy to get a long with. Bringing a fourth team in that’s funded correctly and when you go out and hire the right people and do the right things, you really shouldn’t miss a beat. It should help everything progress forward, with more R & D dollars and more opinions at the race track as far as what needs to get better or things you need to do differently. When the No. 07 team went away, all that stuff went to the truck team, so it really has been a complete addition of everything brand new.”

Jeff Burton

No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet Impala

Race Notes and Quotes

This Week’s Caterpillar Chevrolet at Daytona International Speedway … For the second consecutive year, Jeff Burton will pilot chassis No. 238 from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stable in the annual Budweiser Shootout event. Built new in 2008, this No. 29-turned-31 Chevrolet Impala was driven in a number of races that year, including those at Auto Club Speedway at California in February, Atlanta Motor Speedway in March, the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May, as well as the June race at Michigan International Speedway and the fall race at Bristol Motor Speedway. In those five races, Harvick qualified in the top 10 four times and posted three top-10 finishes, his best result being a fourth-place run at Bristol in August. At the completion of the 2008 season, the RCR entry was converted from its original downforce configuration into a superspeedway car. In 2009, Harvick was scheduled to drive this car in the Daytona 500, but a crash during practice forced the team to use a back-up car instead. A couple months later, Harvick and the No. 29 Chevrolet were involved in a multi-car incident just seven laps into the 188-lap event at Talladega Superspeedway and were credited with a 38th-place finish. Serving as a back-up entry for the remaining restrictor-plate events, this racer wouldn’t return to competition until the 2010 Budweiser Shootout when Burton drove it to a 12th-place finish.

The Road Previously Traveled … In five Budweiser Shootout starts at the 2.5-mile superspeedway, Burton boasts one top-five and two top-10 efforts. His best finish of fifth came in 2001 after starting from the 16th position. The veteran driver’s average starting position of 12.8 is, ironically, his average finishing position, as well.

Shootout Victor … Crew chief Todd Berrier owns a Budweiser Shootout champion’s jacket for his win with Harvick in the 2009 event. Despite Harvick being knocked out of the draft early in the 75-lap race due to contact with the outer retaining wall, Berrier orchestrated an array of repairs during the 10-minute break that put his team back in contention for the win.

No Rest for the Weary … The Cat Racing team spent some time away from the shop in the off season, testing a number of No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolets in preparation for 2011. Berrier and his squad participated in Goodyear’s tire test at Daytona International Speedway in December and revisited the ‘World Center of Racing’ in January for Preseason Thunder. Most recently, the No. 31 team returned to the Sunshine State where they tested the black and yellow machine at Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando, Fla.

JEFF BURTON QUOTES:

You made the Chase last season that put you in the Bud Shootout. Does that race take on a little more significance this year because you have so many more cars?

“It’s almost a whole field. There are a lot of cars in it, and I guess that’s good because we’re in it. It’s going to be an exciting race. I really think that the race, with the new surface, is going to be crazy. This race offers an opportunity to learn something. The drivers and teams racing in the Bud Shootout will go into the Duel 150’s with a race under their belt that others won’t have, and I think that’s an advantage. Anytime you can be on the race track and other people can’t, gives you an edge. It’s going to be hard to imagine that half the cars that come out of it won’t need another car to replace that one.”

Speaking of another non-points race, the Duel 150’s on Thursday, are you just trying to get your car through the races? Is that your first priority? What’s your thought process in that race?

“I think it depends on what you have going on. I think that’s going to be the mind-set for most people. If you look at testing this year, there was never a large pack of cars. You would walk through the garage area and ask ‘are you guys going to draft?’ People say ‘no, we’re afraid we’re going to tear something up.’ There’s a general consensus that there’s going to be a fair amount of wrecks going on at Daytona. You certainly want to be able to put your best piece into the Daytona 500 and, certainly, the car that you qualify is the car that you believe is the best one. There’s a fine line between learning and being aggressive. I think the 150’s are going to be a great place to learn but, at the same time, it’s a race and people are going to try and win.”

You’ve come close to winning the Daytona 500. How do you feel about coming so close and not winning it?

“In the last four years, we’ve been 15 laps from the end of the race and in the midst of a battle with a real opportunity to win the 500.Every year, there’s been a circumstance where we didn’t make the right move or something happened and it just didn’t work out for us. Our restrictor-plate Chevys have been great and I feel like we’ve been in position to win at both Daytona and Talladega. We’ve always been a little better at Daytona than at Talladega, but I think you’re going to have to shift your mentality a little bit. I have to make sure that my weaknesses at Talladega don’t come out at Daytona because I feel like it’s going to be more like a Talladega race. I’ve spent a lot of time watching the last three races at Talladega to see how Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer have won them as well as other drivers who got it done. I feel like I’ve learned a lot. I’ve talked to Clint a lot. The Daytona 500 is a race that means a great deal to me. I’ve never won one and it’s certainly on my list.”

Is there rust the teams have to knock off every year and is the Budweiser Shootout helpful with that?

“Competition brings something out of you that you can’t replicate by practice or testing, especially in our sport. With football, basketball and baseball, you can practice and scrimmage at a level against people. When we go test, we’re testing against the race track, which you ultimately have to beat. But, you have a lot of people you have to go through to beat the race track. So, in our sport, you don’t get the chance to do that unless you’re at the race track with other people. The Shootout is our first chance in three months to go out and try to beat our competitors. I think it’s great to get started the week before the Daytona 500.”

 Clint Bowyer

No. 33 Cheerios/Hamburger Helper Chevrolet

Race Notes and Quotes

This Week’s Cheerios/Hamburger Helper Chevrolet at Daytona  International Speedway … Clint Bowyer will pilot chassis No. 294 from the Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stable in the annual Budweiser Shootout event. This chassis was driven in two restrictor plate races during the 2010 NSCS season at Daytona and Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. Bowyer drove the No. 33 Chevrolet to Victory Lane at Talladega last Halloween and to a top-five finish in the prestigious DAYTONA 500. In both races, he qualified inside the top 10 and led for a total 56 laps.

It’s Good to be Back … After a two-year hiatus, Bowyer will make his second career start in the annual Budweiser Shootout under the lights at the 2.5-mile superspeedway. Bowyer scored a top-15 effort in his first outing with a finish of 14th in the 2008 event.

Familiar Faces … Shane Wilson returns for his third season atop the pit box after scoring two wins, seven top-five, and 18 top-10 finishes in 2010 with Bowyer at the wheel. Kevin Hamlin, who replaced RCR Vice President of Competition Mike Dillon as Bowyer’s spotter for the final three races of the 2010 NSCS season, will also return for the 2011 season.

CLINT BOWYER QUOTES:

How was your off-season?

“The off-season was really great and too short. I had a lot of fun. I actually went hunting right after the banquet for two or three weeks. I enjoyed some hunting back home around Kansas and then went on to Tennessee to a buddy’s house and enjoyed some more outdoors there. I just relaxed and took it easy. I worked on my dirt program quite a bit. I’m really excited about that. We’re hoping to start a new team, making us a two-car organization running on dirt next year. I’ve been working a lot in the shop on the dirt cars and, hopefully, making their program bigger and better this year than it’s ever been.”

You made the Chase last year and won some races. What are your goals for this year?

“Same thing, just add one to the end of it, that’s all you can do. You set out the year to win races, make the Chase and win a championship. Those are your three goals, in that order. Hopefully, we can win more races, do better in the Chase and compete for the championship. That’s the ultimate goal for everybody.. It’s going to happen at RCR, and I want to be the one that makes it happen.”

Talk about Paul Menard joining RCR as the fourth driver.

“I’m really excited. I thought Paul really came on last year big time. He was really starting to run well and was consistently up front. He was a guy you were being passed by when you were running well. I’m excited to have him as a teammate. He brings a lot to the table for us on and off the race track. To be able to work with him on the race track will add another element to our already solid program. I think we’ll be even better. I think we’re ready this time. That’s the biggest thing. We had four teams and it didn’t work. This time, we have our ducks in a row. We’re organized, we’re structured and we have a lot more depth in our management and engineering. Across the board, we’re ready for it this time.”

Tim George Jr.
No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet Impala Race Notes and Quotes

This Week’s RCR Chevrolet at Daytona … Tim George Jr. will pilot chassis No. 161 from the Richard Childress Racing ARCA Racing Series stable in this weekend’s ARCA 200. George led laps in this chassis last year at Talladega Superspeedway en route to a third-place finish.

George’s Daytona History … Tim George Jr. has made two previous appearances at Daytona International Speedway in ARCA Racing Series competition, with a career-best finish of eighth in the 2009 edition of the race after starting 34th. Last year, he finished 19th, also after starting 34th. He has completed all 160 laps he has attempted at the track.

Getting Used to This Place … George has spent a lot of time at DIS in 2011. In addition to a three day ARCA Open Test and this weekend’s ARCA race, George revisited his road course racing roots, finishing 14th in the Rolex 24 at Daytona on January 29.

Building Off a Solid Year … Tim George Jr. returns to the seat of the No. 31 RCR Chevrolet following a successful 2010 season that included two top-five and five top-10 finishes over the course of the 20-race ARCA Racing Series. Season highlights included leading laps and battling for the win during the late stages of the series’ race at New Jersey Motorsports Park and leading laps at Talladega Superspeedway en route to a third-place finish.

Up Close and Personal … Tim George Jr will join teammate Ty Dillon on the Chevrolet Stage for a question-and-answer session with race fans on Saturday, February 12 at Noon. Following the Chevrolet appearance, RCR’s ARCA drivers will meet with race fans at the back of their respective team haulers in the ARCA Garage Area as part of ARCA All Access from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday. The entire garage area will be open to race fans that have purchased a FanZone Ticket at Daytona.

.

TIM GEORGE JR QUOTES:

What do you think about the new racing surface at Daytona, based on ARCA testing and competing in the Rolex 24?

“The new racing surface at Daytona has a lot of grip and is great to drive on. I just finished the Rolex 24 weekend there, and the banking feels like it’s a lot smoother. I think this will yield closer and more exciting racing. I know my confidence is up after a great test with RCR in the ARCA Racing Series a few weeks ago. There’s a bump low between (Turns) 3 and 4, but, other than that, the surface is much smoother than the old track. I think the set ups will be a lot more like Talladega – which I love. We’ll just set the car to go fast since handling is less important now. Of course, everything will change in a big draft.”

Is testing particularly helpful to a driver and team heading into a big race like Daytona?  “Testing helps at a superspeedway like Daytona, but we did not draft at all at the ARCA Open Test. We are scrambling to get my backup car together and didn’t want to risk hurting the primary, especially since it’s so good! ECR does a great job with their plate motor package and my guys have worked hard to get this car right. We are going back to Daytona to compete for the win.”

Ty Dillon
No. 41 University of Northwestern Ohio Chevrolet Impala Race Notes and Quotes

This Week’s UNOH Chevrolet at Daytona … Ty Dillon will pilot chassis No. 89 from the Richard Childress Racing ARCA Racing Series stable in this weekend’s ARCA 200. This No. 41 Chevrolet was built in house by RCR employees over the winter months. Although the car has not yet been tested under race conditions, Dillon did have the opportunity to drive this Chevrolet at Daytona during the ARCA Open Test in January, posting some of the most competitive times of the three day test.

Dillon’s Daytona History … The ARCA 200 at Daytona marks Dillon’s first attempt at Daytona International Speedway, and his first attempt at restrictor-plate racing. However, the “World Center of Racing” is not completely unfamiliar to the 18-year-old high school senior, as he has been attending Speedweeks with his grandfather, legendary NASCAR car owner Richard Childress, and father, RCR Vice President of Competition Mike Dillon, his entire life. In fact, Dillon and his older brother, Austin, have been a part of several RCR Victory Lane celebrations at DIS, including the 1998 Daytona 500 with Dale Earnhardt, Sr.

Welcome, UNOH … The University of Northwestern Ohio joins Dillon and RCR as primary sponsor of the No. 41 Chevrolet for Saturday’s ARCA 200. UNOH also serves as the Official High Performance Education University of ARCA.

Meet Scott Naset … This season, Scott Naset will make the calls on top of the pit box as crew chief of the No. 41 Chevrolet. Naset is a long-time member of the RCR team, serving as truck chief for Austin Dillon’s No. 3 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet in 2010, and as an experienced car chief in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for Kevin Harvick.

Off to Volusia … Austin and Ty Dillon will be racing dirt Modifieds at Volusia Speedway Park as part of the 40th annual DIRTCar Nationals February 8-15. For more information, visit www.TeamDillonRacing.com.

Last Season … In three ARCA Racing Series starts in 2010, Dillon earned two wins (Kansas and Rockingham), one pole award (Iowa), and led 59 of 500 laps.

Up Close and Personal … Dillon will join teammate George Jr. on the Chevrolet Stage for a question-and-answer session with race fans on Saturday, February 12 at Noon.

TY DILLON QUOTES:

Do you feel pressure to perform well based on your success in 2010?
“The Daytona ARCA test went really well for our team, so I think we will be prepared and ready for Daytona when it’s time to go there and race. Our No. 41 UNOH Chevrolet is really fast, and the guys are working hard to make it even better. I feel a little bit of pressure to perform well at Daytona based on my successes last season, but I’m confident in my team and in my car. I think my guys are good enough to handle anything that the 2011 ARCA season may hand us.”

What did you find most interesting about Daytona when you were testing?
“I was impressed with the overall speed of Daytona. The track is really wild, especially being in the draft. I can’t wait to get out there with 42 other cars.”

FOUR-TIME CUP SERIES CHAMPION GORDON GOING FOR FOURTH ‘500’

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. (February 8, 2011) – With a victory in the Daytona 500 on February 20, Jeff Gordon would join Richard Petty and Cale Yarborough as the only drivers to win “The Great American Race” at least four times. He would also join the pair as the only drivers to win NASCAR’s “Super Bowl” in three different decades.

Petty’s record of seven Daytona 500 wins and Yarborough’s total of four occurred in the ‘60’s, ‘70’s and ‘80’s. Gordon won two Daytona 500’s in the ‘90’s (1997 and 1999) while another occurred in the ‘00’s (2005).   But the 39-year old enters the new decade with a new crew chief, Alan Gustafson, and a new team, formerly the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports team. Tests in December and January have given the new pairing a chance to gel.

“I’ve known Alan for a number of years – working with him through our debriefs, and conversations about setups and just racing in general,” said Gordon, who has six wins, three poles 12 top-fives and 18 top-10’s in 36 starts at Daytona. “I love his intensity and I love the direction that he’s taking the team.

“Just the fact that the tests went well I think was important for us. With a new team and a new crew chief, getting off to a good start is fantastic.   “I can already sense the chemistry with this team that no matter what happens at Daytona, we’ve got some really good things happening for us this season.”

Along with the new team, Gordon’s No. 24 will also have a new look this year. While the familiar DuPont “fire and flames” paint scheme will still be visible at 14 events, Drive to End Hunger – a cause-related sponsorship – will be the primary sponsor of the No. 24 Chevrolet in 22 events starting with the 2011 edition of Speedweeks. (more)

“I think it’s pretty well known through the work I do with the Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation that I enjoy working with organizations that do great things and want to give back,” said Gordon. “The AARP Foundation and The Drive to End Hunger campaign that they have, to me it just makes sense and I’m really excited about representing them.

“I’m also happy we’re able to continue our existing relationships with DuPont and Pepsi Max.” But change in the offseason was not limited to the No. 24 team. Daytona was repaved and the 2.5-mile Florida track is now comparable to its “sister” track, Talladega Superspeedway, according to Gordon.

“We’ll most likely see the two-car breakaways at Daytona like we see at Talladega,” said Gordon, who holds the record for most restrictor-plate victories with 12.

“I don’t think we’ll have these breakaways during the entire race but, more than likely, it’s going to come down to these two-car breakaways at the very end. “It’s about being in the right place at the right time. It’s about having the right guy to push or to push you. There’s a lot of chance that comes into whether you can win the race or not.

“I hope we have a fast race car. I feel confident that we will and I hope we can put ourselves into position to battle for the win.” And join Petty and Yarborough in the history books.

NOTES

Jamie McMurray and No. 1 Bass Pro Shops® / Tracker Boats Team:

Return of the Champion:  Jamie McMurray returns to Speedweeks and the Shootout as the defending Daytona 500 champion where he landed his biggest career win last February. In his 20 starts at Daytona, including the Budweiser shootout, McMurray has claimed two victories, five top-fives and seven top-10’s, with 25 laps led.

High Expectations: Jamie McMurray returns to Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates for the 2011 season coming off a record 2010 behind the wheel of the No.1 Bass Pro Shops/McDonalds Chevrolet. NASCAR’s “Big Event” driver, as McMurray was dubbed in 2010, became only the third driver in history to win both the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 in the same season, in addition to winning the Bank of America 500 (Charlotte’s Chase race). He and the No.1 team claimed four poles (NSCS high), nine top-fives and 12 top-10 finishes. In the 36 Cup races last season McMurray lead a career-best 386 laps averaging a starting position of 11.6 and a finishing position of 18.0. While McMurray ended the season with a 14th-place finish in the final championship standings, just failing to make the chase, he claimed a win (Charlotte), two top-fives and three top-10 finishes, leading 90 laps combined in the final 10 Chase races. McMurray and the No.1 team led by crew chief Kevin “Bono” Manion now turn their attention to building on their previous success during the 2011 season.

Shootout at the Beach:   McMurray will attempt to better his last two races in the Shootout, scoring a career-best second-place finish in the 2009 race followed by a third-place finish in last year’s running. Among active drivers he yields the third best driver rating in the Shootout with a 99.6. In his five shootout attempts (‘04, ‘06, ‘08, ‘09, ‘10) McMurray has claimed two top-fives, three top-10s and four top-20 finishes with 19 laps led while completing 319 of a possible 366 laps. His best starting position came during the 2004 edition (McMurray’s first), when he started third.

Driver Highlights:

  • McMurray will enter his ninth full season in the NSCS in 2011 with Bass Pro Shops and McDonald’s as his team’s sponsor
  • Total of 294 career starts in NSCS heading into Daytona.
  • Won a career-high four races in 2010, including three of the NSCS biggest events, Daytona 500, Brickyard 400, Bank of America 500 (Charlotte Chase Race) in addition to his Nationwide Series victory at Atlanta driving the No.88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet
  • On July 25, with his victory in the Brickyard 400, McMurray became only the third driver (Dale Jarrett-1996, Jimmie Johnson-2006) in NSCS history to record wins in both of NASCAR’s marquee events (Daytona 500, Brickyard 400) in the same season. McMurray’s win at the Brickyard also gave owner Chip Ganassi the Triple Crown of American auto racing – winning the Daytona 500 earlier in the season, and teammate Dario Franchitti winning the Indianapolis 500 in the IZOD IndyCar Series
  • On Oct. 17, eight years after winning his first NSCS race at Charlotte Motor Speedway subbing for an Injured Sterling Marlin, McMurray played spoiler in the NSCS by winning the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the fifth Chase race on the 2010 schedule. The victory marked the first-time a non-Chase driver claimed a victory in the Chase since Greg Biffle at Kansas in 2007
  • 2010 NSCS Coors Light overall pole award winner with four (Fontana, Darlington, Chicago, Fontana)
  • 15 victories and 13 poles in his NASCAR (NSCS, Nationwide, Camping World Truck Series) career with 73 top-five and 160 top-10 finishes in 498 starts
  • In 2005, McMurray returned to Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates for the third consecutive season grabbing four top-five and 10 top-10 finishes en route to a 12th place finish in the final point standings.
  • In 2004, McMurray’s second season he earned nine top-five and 23 top-10 finishes – tied for second most with Jimmie Johnson and behind only Jeff Gordon.
  • In 2003, McMurray grabbed his first career pole at Homestead-Miami Speedway and earned the 2003 Raybestos Rookie of the Year Award.
  • In 2002 McMurray shocked the motorsports world when he filled in for an injured Sterling Marlin of Chip Ganassi Racing and won his first NSCS race at Charlotte Motor Speedway – still holding the NASCAR record for quickest to record first victory

Bass Pro Shops:  Bass Pro Shops, of Springfield, Missouri, will enter their sixth season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series as one of the primary sponsors of the No. 1 Chevrolet.  With 56 retail stores in 26 states and Canada, Bass Pro Shops are visited by over 100 million people annually.  Their international catalog and internet retailing are second to none.  The American Rod & Gun wholesale division sells to over 7,000 independently owned retail stores worldwide, and the Outdoor World Incentives sell Bass Pro Shops gift cards through over 132,000 retail outlets across America.  Bass Pro Shops is also extremely proud of their restaurant division, featuring 26 unique locations.

Juan Pablo Montoya and No. 42 Target Team:

High Expectations: Juan Pablo Montoya returns for his fifth full-time NSCS season at Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates in the No. 42 Chevy with long-time partner Target.  Montoya and the Brian Pattie led Target team capped off the 2010 NSCS campaign highlighted by an Aug. 8 victory at Watkins Glen, giving Target their first NSCS victory and the second consecutive season that both Montoya and Target have added to their list of accomplishments together (making the Chase for the Sprint Cup in 2009). Montoya finished the season with one win, a career-high three pole awards, six top-fives, 14 top-10 (39%) and 18 top-15 (50%) finishes.
