Milka Duno Delivers Strong Results at ARCA Racing Series Test Day One

Sheltra Motorsports and Duno Prepare for the Running of Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at Daytona International Speedway

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.  (January 11, 2011) – Milka Duno delivered strong results on Day One of the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards testing at Daytona International Speedway with Sheltra Motorsports, the 2010 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menard’s Champion.

Duno, piloting the team’s No. 63 Dodge Charger, was seventh quickest of 29 cars in today’s morning session and fifth quickest of 40 cars in the afternoon session.

In the morning session Duno completed five laps with a best time of 50.06 seconds at 179.763 mph and improved in a 27-lap afternoon session to a best time of 49.37 at 182.293 mph.

This was Duno’s first time behind the wheel of a stock car since she competed in the ARCA Racing Series season-opener at Daytona one year ago.

Crew Chief Jon Wolfe and his crew made some adjustments to the car between sessions and worked with Duno to continue getting her comfortable in the car and to try new lines on the track. Patrick Sheltra worked with her throughout the day to help her get the most out of the car.

“It was a good practice today and I was very impressed with the team and how professional they were,” said Duno. “We are looking for more speed and will work hard over the next two days to get faster. It was great to get Patrick’s input, and it was a big help. He’s the 2010 champion, and he knows what to do.”

Brian Rose Returns To Daytona

“Brian Rose Motorsports Set To Officially Launch; Driver Ready To Blossom Again At Daytona!”

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida (January 12, 2011) – – Sometimes, the term “better late than never” can be accepted in racing. For Brian Rose Motorsports, a new entity in the ARCA Racing Series (ARS) presented by Menards, the term couldn’t have been more perfect.

After a monstrous winter storm crippled much of the mid-west and south east Sunday night and Monday, Brian Rose and his Brian Rose Motorsports team were trapped in the wintry mix that included ice and snow and unable to make the haul to Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway for the first of a three-day open test session.     Luckily, road and weather conditions improved on Tuesday that allowed the team to slowly but carefully maneuver through the 10 hour plus drive to the Sunshine State to tackle the newly re-paved 2.5-mile monster track Wednesday morning.

Planning to test for the remaining two days (Wednesday and Thursday), the first open test of the New Year will mark the first tango for Louisville, Kentucky native Brian Rose at the wheel of the No. 4 Harris Trucking / Team ASE Toyota Camry at the newly re-paved DIS.

Though Rose and his posse are new to ARCA, the team has some experience at the Daytona Beach, Fla. track. In 2002, the now part-time NASCAR driver competed in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season-opener at Daytona, qualifying an impressive fourth, leading several laps and finishing a career-best and stout third in the No. 4 Dodge Ram for Bobby Hamilton Racing.

Nearly a decade later, Rose returns to the “World Center of Racing” honored to boast the No. 4 again while also hoping to make an early impression in the ARCA Racing Series.

“We’ve been working hard for this test and despite the weather, we’re still here,” said Rose, who will attempt to make his first ARCA Racing Series start in next month’s Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at Daytona. “I have a great group of guys behind me and I think this test definitely will give us a baseline on which direction we’re heading.”   Rose continued, “I’m looking forward to competing in the ARCA Racing Series. It’s a great series and I’m embracing the opportunity to bring my new team to such a diverse series. This won’t be our only ARCA race in 2011, but we’re hoping to leave a lasting impression that will carry over into our next event.”

Danny Rollins, well respected in the NASCAR community will serve as the crew chief for Brian Rose Motorsports. Rollins was the man responsible for guiding the young-gun to his first career NASCAR top-five finish at Daytona (Fla.) Speedway nine years ago.

Harris Trucking and Team ASE have leaped aboard as marketing partners in the No. 4 Toyota Camry for the first of 19 events on the 2011 ARS calendar, but the freshman team is planning to announce more supporters in the next couple of weeks leading up to ARCA’s biggest race of the season.

About Brian Rose Motorsports (BRM):   From 2001-2010, Brian Rose competed in 41 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) events. Driving for successful car owners such as the late Bobby Hamilton Sr., Billy Ballew and Rick Ware, he has scored five top-10 finishes including a third place effort in his restrictor plate debut at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway after qualifying fourth in 2002. Rose has controlled the NCWTS field for 35 laps in four events.   A new decade means a new beginning. In 2011, Rose, a native of Louisville, Kentucky will re-brand himself in the racing world by launching his own team, Brian Rose Motorsports (BRM) near Louisville, Kentucky. With the intent to run a full platter of events in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS), NASCAR Nationwide Series and Late Model events across the country, Rose is expected to blossom back to the top on and off the race track.

Roush Yates Engine Breaks Unofficial DP Record at Daytona

Mooresville, NC (January 11, 2011) The Rolex 24 at Daytona is the Grand-AM Rolex Sports Car Series’ opener set for Jan. 29-30 at Daytona International Speedway.

The “World Center of Racing’s” all-new pavement, combined with the largest number of Roush Yates engines in the event’s premier class, including an entry that set an unofficial track record during testing,  are sure to make this year’s race the most exciting ever.

During the “Roar Before the Rolex 24” practice session this past weekend, Ford driver Ryan Dalziel ran an unparalleled lap with an elapsed time of 1:39.973 using his Roush Yates-powered engine, unofficially breaking the track record for a Daytona Prototype (DP) class  for a lap around Daytona International Speedway’s 3.56-mile, 12-turn speedway/road course.

Dalziel is the reigning Rolex 24 winner and drove a BMW during the majority of the 2010 season, but decided to switch to Ford motors for the 2011 season. The switch is already paying off, and Dalziel couldn’t be more excited about his chances for a repeat victory with 2011 co drivers Mike Forest, Colin Braun, and Tomas Enge.

“We are contenders, and we’ve proven that now” said Dalziel. “I think we could have gone faster. I didn’t put together a perfect lap, and we didn’t have a qualifying setup on the car. I know we’ve got more”.

Car owner Peter Baron credits engineer Bill Riley for the success of the #8 Starworks Motorsport Riley Ford during Sunday’s practice session. Riley has been working on set up options since August of last year and both owner and engineer can’t wait until the January 29th race.

“We spent a lot of time in the off season working on setup ideas with the new Continental tire and were anxious to test at Daytona for the first time with a Ford engine,” said Baron. “Setting the record at a horsepower track like Daytona is awesome. I’m more than impressed with the engine package Roush Yates has provided us with and I’m looking forward to our chances in the Rolex 24.”

Roush Yates has a total of eight engines running in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the most of any manufacturer in the field. Ford teams Michael Shank Racing and Doran Racing were also at the top of the speed charts during last Sunday’s test session.

Practice and qualifying for the Rolex 24 begins Thursday, Jan. 27th and the green flag waves at 3:30pm (ET) on Saturday, Jan. 29th.

Lofton To Run SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge This Weekend

Camping World Truck Series racer Justin Lofton will return to his roots this weekend, racing a Class 1 Unlimited buggy in the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in Laughlin, Nevada.

“Since the NASCAR season ended in Homestead, I’ve been working on getting everything ready for this race and for my charity golf tournament. I’m so excited to get back out in the desert. The race will be a lot of fun,” Lofton said.

Before making the move to asphalt ovals, Lofton followed in his father Bob’s footsteps, racing in the open, sandy desert. The talent proved hereditary, with the younger Lofton also becoming one to reckon with in off-road racing. In 2004, he earned the Best in the Desert Rookie of the Year honors in addition to three wins in the Desert Buggy Class, as well as the Class 1000 championship.   This weekend’s SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge is a three-day event, which kicks off on Friday with practice, followed by the Laughlin Leap. The race itself will take place on Saturday and Sunday. The starting positions for the event are electronically drawn, with Lofton drawing seventh in Class 1 Unlimited. Sunday’s starting position will be based on the finishing position from Saturday.

Over 100 racers and 20 classes will participate in the event, racing over a 6.25-mile course. The final positions are determined based on the number of laps and overall time each entry has logged spanning the two-day run. Rusty Szymanski will be along for the ride, serving as Lofton’s navigator.    “It’s been a few years since I’ve raced in the desert. I’m real excited about getting back out there. We’ll see what we can do,” Lofton added.

Lofton’s partners for the event include Lofton Cattle, BF Goodrich Tires, MasterCraft Safety, JIMCO Racing, and Rusty’s Motor Car Inc.   Following this weekend’s SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, 24-year-old Lofton will prepare for his inaugural charity golf tournament on January 22nd. The event will be held in Brawley, California with all proceeds benefiting the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Imperial Valley. The event includes a golf tournament, awards dinner, auction, and a concert. More information about the tournament is available on www.LoftonRacing.com.   For more information on this weekend’s event, visit www.score-international.com Follow Justin on Twitter: www.twitter.com/jlracing ###

Drivers Must Choose To Run For One Championship in 2011

Last week, Brad Keselowski tweeted, “Needed a good laugh tonight after being ruled ineligible for both shootout and NW championship in one loooong week. Thanks for the support.” This began speculation that drivers would have to choose the series that they wanted to compete in for 2011.

Since then, this has been confirmed to be true as reported on NASCAR.com.

Kenny Wallace said that there is a box you have to check on the new entry form that he picked up while testing at Daytona for the upcoming 24 hours of Daytona race.

“The brand-new license forms that are out, there’s a box and in it, it states that you have to mark — put an X — what championship you’re running for,” Wallace told NASCAR.com, quoting his application. “A driver will only be permitted to earn driver championship points in one (1) of the following three series: NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide or NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Please select the series in which you would like to accumulate driver championship points. Choose one.”

NASCAR refused to comment on the issue as they said it would be addressed during the Competition Update held during Preseason Thunder later this month.

“I’m sure we can answer all your questions at our competition update.” NASCAR spokesperson Kerry Tharp said.

From whether owner’s points will be addressed to how giving out the points will be done, that is all suppose to addressed come January 21st during Preseason Thunder.

This is something that has been rumored to be happening for the 2011 season since last October. It was a move that was being discussed then to help with driver development, small teams attracting sponsors and bringing the series back to its roots as a developmental series. The last non-Sprint Cup driver to win a Nationwide Series championship was Martin Truex Jr. in 2005. Since then, it has been Sprint Cup regulars dominating the Nationwide Series, taking most of the wins and all the championships.

NASCAR President Brian France also announced that in the next coming weeks, they will be meeting with drivers and owners from each organization to discuss other issues currently facing NASCAR. They will be doing the discussed by organization instead of as a big town hall meeting to hopefully open up the lines of communication more.

“The old theory was that when you’re at the races with them all the time, we had the communication lines wide open,” France said about the team forums last January to Sporting News. “That’s true, but it’s too busy now to assume that we can have all the communications and get all the issues they want to get resolved with us at the track.

“So we just changed it around where we’re having these meetings. … In the town hall meetings, a lot of people didn’t want to speak up when there were 12 other drivers or something like that and they didn’t feel comfortable.”

Venturini Motorsports Rules Opening Day as ARCA Racing Series Begins Testing at Daytona

(DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.) – Venturini Motorsports has made a habit of exhibiting raw power in ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards testing sessions, and 18-year-old Kyle Fowler helped the organization continue that custom this afternoon.

Fowler, of Smyrna, Ga., drove the No. 15 Venturini Motorsports Chevrolet to a lap of 48.791 seconds (184.460 mph) in the afternoon session to lead the opening day of testing at the historic 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway.

“I didn’t expect that. This is my first time here, but the guys have been putting a lot of hard work and effort into it. I’m certainly pleased with it, obviously,” Fowler said.

Fowler looked ahead to Wednesday’s test sessions, which will feature single-car runs in the morning and drafting practice in the afternoon.

“We’re going to try a couple different things. The car’s handling outstanding so we just basically have to get me comfortable in the draft. That’s going to be a new experience for me, so we’ll see if we can get ready for the race here,” Fowler said.

“Restrictor plate racing is absolutely different than anything I’ve ever done. It was something to take those first few laps around this place, considering how much history it has. It was incredible.”

Venturini Motorsports posted each of the day’s top three speeds and four of the top eight, so far pleasing team general manager Billy Venturini, and matching last season’s effort which saw the ARCA stalwart lead in preseason Daytona testing with driver Mikey Kile.

“We have high expectations when we go plate racing. We’ve worked really hard since the week after (last season’s finale at) Rockingham, so it’s always good to see your hard work pay off. I hope we can make it all apply when we come back for the race,” Venturini said.

Arpin, who drove the No. 55 entry for Venturini last season, took the No. 25 Toyota to second at 48.796 seconds (184.441 mph). Martin, driving the No. 55, finished third for the day at 49.141 (183.146 mph). Mark Thompson drove Venturini’s No. 66 entry to eighth on the overall chart.

“I only had the afternoon to log laps in the 55 car, and the team really worked hard to give me a fantastic car. The track is fast, the car is fast, and I’m ready for days 2 and 3. The car feels good and we worked on several different setups today,” Martin said. “Daytona is a world-class track, and the repaving has made it even more challenging than before. It’s going to be really interesting to see the drafting practice over the next two days. We can easily take it three-wide for several laps with this surface.”

Tim George Jr. drove the No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Development Chevrolet to the fourth position for the day at 49.201 seconds (182.923 mph). Chris Buescher, who led the morning session, finished the day fifth overall with a lap of 49.315 seconds (182.5 mph) in the No. 17 Roulo Brothers Racing Ford.

IndyCar driver Milka Duno finished the day sixth in advance of just her second ARCA Racing Series start, and rookie Ty Dillon was seventh. Grant Enfinger drove an Allgaier Motorsports entry to ninth overall, and Dakoda Armstrong rounded out the top 10.

The on-track action was slowed by only three minor cautions throughout the day.

Open testing for teams and drivers will continue Wednesday and Thursday at Daytona International Speedway.

The 2011 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards season will mark the sanctioning body’s 59th year of competition and begins with the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, February 12. The event will air live on SPEED.

The complete 2011 event schedule is available at ARCARacing.com.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards has crowned an ARCA national champion each year since its inaugural season in 1953, and has toured over 200 race tracks in 28 states since its inception. The series tests the abilities of drivers and race teams over the most diverse schedule of stock car racing events in the world, annually visiting tracks ranging from 0.4 mile to 2.66 miles in length, on both paved and dirt surfaces as well as a left- and right-turn road course.

Founded by John Marcum in 1953 in Toledo, Ohio, the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) is recognized among the leading sanctioning bodies in the country. Closing in on completing its sixth decade after hundreds of thousands of miles of racing, ARCA administers over 100 race events each season in two professional touring series and local weekly events.

As Good as New: Looking Ahead to the 2011 Nationwide Series

The 2011 Nationwide Series will be one of uncharted territory.

It’s hard to try and promise fans that they need to watch this season because it’s going to be bigger and better than years past. It would be unfair to try and say that things are going to be different in the best way possible and the season is going to blow the history books away.

That has yet to be determined. We’re not in the business of false advertising. That’ll be save for the McDonald’s commercials which always seem to have a burger that looks more appetizing and pretty than what arrives in the bag.

For the most part however, the upcoming NNS season is one that has begun to paint a very interesting picture. Here are five new things fans should be looking for in the 2011 season.

New Faces Competing for the Nationwide Series Championship

Elliott Sadler feels like a kid again.

After winning his first race in NASCAR’s top three series since 2004 in a Kevin Harvick Incorporated truck, Sadler was given the keys to a full-time NNS ride for KHI. Considering that Sadler is no long a Sprint Cup Series driver, he should be eligible to run for the title in 2011.

His success in 2010, including a pole and third place finish at Bristol in August, makes him a contender to watch. Sadler has always been a lovable character in the NASCAR garage, who hasn’t had the success that many feel he’s capable of.

This season it might be hard to wipe a smile off his face.

At Texas last November after the announcement was made, Sadler said he was looking forward to having fun again. And it also doesn’t hurt that he knows he’s going to be competitive.

It felt like the first day of the rest of his life. Could Sadler become the next Jamie McMurray comeback story?

KHI has established themselves as a premiere NNS team, one that will again be looking to take up residence in victory lane. But another returnee to the NNS is going to give Sadler a run for his money.

If Aric Almirola’s career to be summed up it would take just one race: Milwaukee in June of 2007. At the time Almirola was a developmental driver for Joe Gibbs Racing, the expectant next big star of the sport.

That’s the race he was yanked out of the car while dominating in favor of Denny Hamlin. Almirola got credit for the victory but he wasn’t in the winner’s circle and doesn’t have the trophy.

In 2011 JR Motorsports is giving him a chance for redemption. Almirola gets the seat of the No. 88 which in 2008-2009 finished third in the NNS points with Brad Keselowski.

Veteran crew chief Tony Eury Sr. is back atop the box, a man that has the experience to create another championship driver. When Almirola finished third at OPR last August in his first race with the team, Eury was instantly impressed and knew their driver search was over. Almirola will leave behind the CWTS where he won two races and finished second in points.

Along with Sadler, Almirola will give NASCAR fans two new Nationwide only drivers to get behind in the title fight.

And speaking of title fight …

New Rules for Sprint Cup Series Drivers

It hasn’t been formally announced yet, but NASCAR has stated they have sent letters to each and every team about the upcoming season. The letter states a driver much declare which of the three series they want to receive championship points in.

What’s that mean? Drivers such as Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards, Paul Menard and others who attempt to compete for both the NNS and NSCS championship cannot. It’s one or the other.

That would bring an end to five years of Cup drivers taking home the Nationwide trophy and ensure that a new face gets his chance.

Cup drivers may still be allowed to run in the series, such as Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick to name a few but they won’t be allowed to rain on the NNS regular drivers parade.

There have been words of praise for NASCAR. There have been those of criticism. The 2010 NNS champion, Keselowski, had already let the cat out of the bag last week on his Twitter page.

Keselowski has become a sort of Twitter-holic over the last month. He’s updates numerous times throughout the day and interacts with his fans.

Keselowski updated on January 7, “Needed a good laugh tonight after being ruled ineligible for both shootout and NW championship in one loooong week. Thanks for the support!”

A day later Keselowski took back his comment and said he has not been informed of any rule changes. NASCAR has said they will address the issue and many more later this month during the media tour.

But, it appears that for the first time since Martin Truex Jr. did so back in 2004-2005, the Nationwide Series will have one of their own taking home the championship.

New Faces in New Places

NASCAR is once again being invaded, except this time it’s not by an open wheel driver. Travis Pastrana is the newest owner/driver as it was announced that Pastrana-Waltrip Racing will make their debut in 2011 with Pastrana behind the wheel.

He comes from a sport that is nothing like NASCAR and where if he tries to pull off one of his signature moves, it won’t end well. Trying to double-back flip a stock car might sound exciting and would certainly put on a show, but it won’t help him end up in victory lane or learn very much.

Pastrana is an X Games hero who will now become the student to some of the best racers in the world. He does have experience on four wheels however, competing in the American Rally racing.

Fans love fresh faces to root for and Pastrana is a very likable guy with a great fan base. A fan base that is also very diverse, something NASCAR will be excited about as well.

New Car Creating a New Kind of Racing

It was run on four occasions last season in preparation of his first full season. In four races there were three winners and none of them came from the Joe Gibbs Racing stable.

Significant because of the praise drivers gave the car in creating an equal playing field. JGR, specifically Kyle Busch, has made the series his own personal playground the last few seasons.

In an era when fans have become sick of seeing the same teams and drivers dominate, the new car is bringing hope that 2011 will open up doors for a successful season for many different faces.

Another compliment handed down was about the car handled and the racing it produced. Some even compared it to driving like a truck, which can be a good thing because many say the CWTS puts on some of the best racing during the weekend.

Keselowski, who won in the car at Charlotte, said that race was one of the best races he’s ever been apart of and hoped the fans agreed. An official judgment of the cars successful will most likely come after the season has concluded.

Something to watch though is that now the Cup drivers can’t win the championship, they have nothing to lose when running in the NNS. It’s victory lane or bust for them and that can only lead to some exciting races.

Oh and don’t forget, the cars look good too.

New Girl on the Block Gets a Returning Neighbor

It’s Danicamania part two but this time she has some competition. Patrick will be back for her second season in a stock car as she also returns to tracks for the second time.

Last season it appeared that she was learning when she ran inside the top 15 at California in October before being wrecked. It was a turnaround from where she was in the beginning of the season.

The first five races of the 2011 season will again be filled with Patrick’s face and name. Sorry for all the haters. Except, don’t get too upset because another female will be looking to take the spotlight.

She’s not new to NASCAR but Jennifer Jo Cobb will also be running in the first five races of the season. She has joined 2nd Chance Motorsports where she’ll drive the No. 79 2nd Chance Motorsports Ford.

Cobb has run NNS races in the past, her last was Kansas last September where she finished 34th. The Kansas City native competes full time in the CWTS and last season she became the highest finished female in NASCAR history.

Patrick vs. Cobb.

It’s just one of the new things to watch as the season gets under way next month.

No. 78 over-the-wall pit crew for Furniture Row Racing will be employed and trained by Stewart-Haas Racing

DENVER, Colo. (Jan. 11, 2011) — Regan Smith’s No. 78 over-the-wall pit crew for Furniture Row Racing will be employed and trained by Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) during the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup season.

“We are excited to partner with SHR as it relates to the pit crew,” said Joe Garone, Furniture Row Racing general manager. “After reviewing SHR’s program, personnel and facility we are confident that SHR will deliver a crew that meets all of our objectives.”

The No. 78 pit crew will be under the supervision of SHR pit crew coach Joe Piette, who also oversees the pit crews for Tony Stewart’s No. 14 team and Ryan Newman’s No. 39 team. The SHR team is based in Kannapolis, N.C.

“We are very excited about our new partnership with Furniture Row Racing and having the opportunity to help contribute to the growth of their program, while also giving our pit crew the chance to compete and improve on a weekly basis,” said Bobby Hutchens, director of competition, Stewart-Haas Racing.

The first race for the new Furniture Row Racing pit crew will be the invitational Budweiser Shootout, Feb. 12 at Daytona International Speedway. Smith qualified for the non-points race on the basis of being a former NASCAR Sprint Cup rookie of the year (2008). The first Sprint Cup points race is the Daytona 500 on Feb. 20.

Richmond International Raceway’s Grandstands Going Smoke-Free Beginning This Season

New Policy Implemented Based on Fan Feedback   Richmond, VA (January 11, 2011) – Richmond International Raceway president Doug Fritz announced today that Richmond International Raceway’s grandstands will be smoke-free beginning this season. Fans who smoke may continue to do so, but in approved areas only. The new policy is in response to fan feedback.

“Beginning this season, smoking will not be permitted in and in front of the grandstands or in portals leading to seating areas,” said Fritz.

“Additionally, restrooms, buildings and areas that were already smoke-free at Richmond International Raceway will continue to be smoke-free,” said Fritz. “We are implementing this policy based on comments received from fans. Those who wish to smoke may continue to do so in designated areas.”

Approved smoking areas include:

·         Underneath and behind the grandstands

 ·         Designated areas of the Commonwealth Mezzanine concourse

·         All parking lots

·         The Midway

 ·         In the campgrounds

 ·         Outdoors areas in fan hospitality

 ·         Miller Lite Ultimate Tailgate

Grandstand ushers will monitor seating areas to ensure the grandstands remain smoke-free at America’s Premier Short Track. Fans can notify an usher or use our text messaging service if they wish to report a violation of the non-smoking policy.

This initiative comes on the heels of the track’s wider seats and larger cooler policy. Fans will enjoy more spacious seating and be allowed to bring in coolers measuring up to 14 x 14 x 14 inches (six times larger than was previously allowed).
