Gil Martin Named WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief of the Race in Martinsville

Roswell, GA (October 26, 2010) – Gil Martin, crew chief for the No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet driven by Kevin Harvick, has been named the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Race following Sunday’s TUMS Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway.

Martin and company rebounded from a disappointing 36th starting spot and rallied for a third-place finish – the first top-five for Harvick at Martinsville. And, it couldn’t have come at a better time as Harvick, third in the Sprint Cup Series championship standings, closed the gap on the two frontrunners. With four races to go, he is only 62 points behind Jimmie Johnson and 56 in arrears to Denny Hamlin.

After the poor result in time trials at NASCAR’s shortest track, Martin and crew used Saturday’s two final practice sessions to make wholesale changes on the No. 29. The changes worked, as he was third and fifth fastest.

At Martinsville, a driver who starts at the back of the pack can go down a lap in a hurry, but Harvick’s car showed strength from the beginning, vaulting into 17th by lap 48 when the day’s first caution flag flew. The first of numerous lightening fast pit stops during the day moved Harvick up an additional five spots to 12th when racing resumed.

He danced up the leader board and cracked the top five on lap 89, and then eventually took over the top spot on lap 377. Late in the race, he held the lead, but his yellow and red machine lost grip in the latter stages of the race, but he held on for third. He led a total of 97 laps on six different occasions.

“Gil and the No. 29 team did an amazing job this weekend,” said WYPALL Wipers crew chief representative Jeff Hammond. “They made the adjustments needed after qualifying that enabled Kevin to drive to the front, gave him great pit stops, and inched closer to Jimmie and Denny. These last four races are going to be something to see which crew chief will make the right calls.”

WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief Results

Todd Berrier, Jeff Burton and the No. 31 CAT team finished ninth after leading the most laps. Jeff started 18th, but quickly maneuvered his way to the front. He was running second with 50 laps to go when his car began experiencing a loose condition, eventually dropping him to ninth.

Frank Kerr, crew chief of the No. 47 Camry driven by Marcos Ambrose, qualified second for the event, but dealt with numerous struggles throughout the day. He suffered a flat tire after making contact with Johnson, spun out, but stayed on the lead lap. Later in the race, Ambrose had to pull behind the wall with brake issues. After making lengthy repairs, The No. 47 Camry wound up 34th, seventy two laps behind.

WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief Team

Berrier, Kerr and Hammond, along with representatives from the WYPALL Wipers brand, serve as the panel for the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief Challenge and vote for the weekly crew chief winners. In addition to the $500 check, the winning crew chief will receive signage to announce the win on their pit box the following week. The crew chief with the most weekly wins will be honored as the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Year and will be presented a $20,000 check at season’s end.

Former winners of the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief Challenge include Tony Eury, Sr. (Dale Earnhardt, Jr.), Robbie Reiser (Matt Kenseth), Doug Richert (Greg Biffle), Mike Ford (Denny Hamlin) and Chad Knaus (Johnson).

Kenseth on racing at Talladega Superspeedway:

“Everyone always talks about Talladega being the wild card race in the Chase, and I guess it really could be. Any of the races in the Chase can always end up being a wild card because you never know what’s going to happen as far as wrecks are concerned, but certainly Talladega always has the potential to be an accident waiting to happen. You never know where it’s going to occur, when it’s going to happen, or who it’s going to take out, so that’s one race that you’re never sure where everybody is going to end up finishing until the race is over.”

Crew chief Jimmy Fennig on racing at Talladega Superspeedway:

“It’s very difficult to have a plan for racing at Talladega because you never know when wrecks are going to happen. There can be incidents starting from the drop of the green flag so you just never know. A lot of teams opt to hang out in the back of the field to try to avoid wrecks, but that doesn’t always work out. We just plan to race the best we can at Talladega and hope to avoid whatever happens on the track. We’ve also worked hard on our drag numbers to keep the resistance levels down in order to have the best car we can for this weekend.”

FAST FACTS:

• Kenseth has an average starting position of 22.3 and an average finishing position of 18.7 at Talladega

• Kenseth has completed 3,733 of 3,977 (93.9 percent) laps at Talladega and led for a total of 146 laps

• This weekend at Talladega, Kenseth will pilot the No. 17 Crown Royal Black Ford Fusion

“It’s kind of crazy going straight from the shortest track we race at to the longest track, but I really enjoy racing at Talladega. It’s not far from my home in Georgia, so a lot of my family comes to the race. I’m excited about our special UPS Logistics paint scheme for this weekend. I think the car looks really good and Talladega is a place we can run really well at. Talladega is such a wide, smooth track which creates tight packs and makes for some exciting racing.”

Crew chief Drew Blickensderfer on racing at Talladega Superspeedway:

“I’m excited to head to a restrictor-plate race with David. He tends to run really well at these superspeedways and Talladega is the place he got his first Nationwide win. Overall he has a pretty good track record in the Cup car at Talladega. Restrictor-plate racing is all about staying out of trouble and being in the right line at the end with help to push you to the end. Hopefully we can do just that and get a good finish in our UPS Logistics Ford.”

FAST FACTS

We Love Logistics: UPS will feature its newest advertising and communications campaign, “We Love Logistics,” on David Ragan’s No. 6 UPS Ford this weekend. This marks the debut of the campaign’s iconography and messaging on the race car and in other elements of the company’s racing program. The broader campaign focuses on UPS’s unique ability to help companies of any size harness the power of logistics to drive growth, improve efficiencies and enhance customer relationships.

Ragan has scored more points in the last 10 restrictor-plate races than any other driver.

Ragan has visited Talladega Superspeedway seven times in his Sprint Cup Series career and in his seven starts has earned two top-five and three top-10 finishes, while also leading for a total of 22 laps.

In the spring of 2009 Ragan earned his first Nationwide Series victory at Talladega.

UPS Maximum Center Recognition—Talladega Superspeedway:

The Hartselle Center (SLIC 3561) has been selected as the Maximum Center for the October 31 race in Talladega as part of UPS’s Center Recognition Program. The Hartselle Center will have its number on the C-post of David Ragan’s UPS Ford throughout the weekend.

FLEXIBILITY COULD GIVE GORDON WIN NO. SEVEN AT TALLADEGA

TALLADEGA, Ala. (October 26, 2010) – The plan is to visit Victory Lane following Sunday’s Amp Energy Juice 500, and there are several different ways to get there. While a pre-race game plan may be formulated, six-time Talladega Superspeedway winner Jeff Gordon believes a willingness to adjust it during the event may be a factor in determining the race winner.

Multi-car accidents – known as the “big one” – often occur on restrictor-plate tracks since drivers race in tight two, three, four and sometimes five-wide packs.

Gordon is the all-time leader in restrictor-plate victories with 12, so he has avoided his fair share of those accidents – and there are several ways to do that.

One is to race up front – in or near the lead – and be ahead of any accidents that occur. But there is the chance of being ‘shuffled’ out of the lead straight into a hornet’s nest of activity.

Another theory is to race well behind the main pack – out of harm’s way – and watch the “big one” unfold ahead. At some point, though, a driver will need to enter the mix and battle his way into contention. Gordon’s strategy for this weekend’s race has yet to be determined.

“The plan is to win – and whatever strategy works for that is the one I want to use,” said Gordon, who has 11 top-fives and 16 top-10’s in 2010. “More than likely, we won’t be laying back and just riding around.

“You have to be willing to adjust as you go, though. You never know how the race is going to play out, so it might be necessary to drop back out of the lead pack at some point.

“But laying back is not in the pre-race game plan.”

Gordon has won at Talladega using both strategies. In 2005, Gordon led 139 laps en route to the win while, in 2007, he led one lap – the last one – on the way to Victory Lane. Overall, the 82-time winner has six wins, one pole, 13 top-fives and 16 top-10’s in 35 starts at the 2.66-mile track.

“I like Talladega a lot,” said Gordon, who is fifth in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point standings and 203 behind the leader. “I look at it and know what to expect and accept it. I’ve won there enough times to have great memories.

“But you’re running so close to one another that it just takes the slightest little bobble by one guy and 10, 12, or 15 cars are in an accident. That’s the part about Talladega that’s not fun. I think we have a great shot at a top-five if we survive the ‘big one.’

“Or a couple of ‘big ones.'”

Marcos Ambrose and JTG Daugherty Racing Say ‘Boo!’ To The Flu at Talladega Superspeedway

TALLADEGA, Ala.(October 26, 2010) – As Halloween approaches, Flu season is lurking in the shadows. Entering Talladega Superspeedway for the Amp Energy 500, Marcos Ambrose and his No. 47 KLEENEX® Brand Toyota Camry team are supporting Say “Boo!” to the Flu events.

The racing organization, owned by Jodi and Tad Geschickter and Brad Daugherty, is teaming up with Families Fighting Flu (FFF), The Visiting Nurse Associations of America (VNAA) and The Clorox Company to build awareness about family flu vaccination locations and to educate parents on the importance of flu prevention.

Family Dollar, which is a No. 47 Toyota Camry associate sponsor at Talladega Speedway, will host the VNNA by having six stores designated as a vaccination location in the Talladega area. Family Dollar along with The Clorox Company, Kimberly-Clark Corporation and GlaxoSmithKline are presenting a $10,000 check to the VNAA during driver introductions to assist in their flu prevention efforts.

“For the Halloween race weekend, we are asking parents to become ‘flu fighting wizards’ by visiting Say ‘Boo!’ to the Flu events – – where the whole family can get vaccinated and learn simple tricks to help prevent the flu,” Ambrose said. “Washing and sanitizing your hands and cleaning hot spots (frequently touched surfaces) with Clorox products are a couple of ways to be preventive along with getting vaccinated. And, using KLEENEX® Brand facial tissues will help keep from spreading air-born germs. I have two young daughters and we’re definitely following the Say ‘Boo!’ to the Flu guidelines to scare away the flu monster. You can visit www.SayBooToTheFlu.com to find a vaccination location near you and learn more about flu prevention.”

“However, if you are coming out to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega, there are convenient Family Dollar locations where you can be vaccinated and purchase Clorox and Kleenex products that will help you fight the flu this season,” Ambrose continued. “To make it a little easier on finding a Family Dollar, below are the store locations.”

10/27 20 N. Broadway Avenue, Sylacauga, Ala. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Central

10/27 913 First Street, Childersburg, Ala. 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Central

10/28 103 17th Street, Talladega, Ala. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Central

10/28 2122 Cogswell Avenue, Pell City Ala. 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Central

10/29 1722 Quintard Avenue, Anniston, Ala. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Central

10/29 3228 McClellan Boulevard, Anniston, Ala. 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Central

Say “Boo!” to the Flu kicked off in September, and hosts more than 100 vaccination events across the country during the month of October. Families attending local Say “Boo!” to the Flu events can get vaccinated against seasonal flu and learn other important tips to help prevent the spread of seasonal flu. Visit www.SayBooToTheFlu.com to see if there is an event in your area.

“It’s ideal to get your family vaccinated and stock up on preventative products before the flu season peaks – – now is the time,” Ambrose said.

To coincide with bringing awareness to the program, Ambrose will have the logo of KLEENEX® Brand facial tissues on the hood of his No. 47 Toyota Camry and a Say “Boo!” to the Flu decal on the TV panel during race number 33 of the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season at Talladega Superspeedway. Ambrose, whose best finish is fourth at the 2.66-mile tri-oval (4/26/09), is hoping to be there in the end mixing it up for a win.

“Talladega takes your breath away – – you have to remind yourself to breathe,” Ambrose said. “It’s action-packed from start to finish and the ending is nothing short of spectacular. Fans are always on their feet at that place because you never know what’s going to happen or who is going to win. You can’t blink your eye because you might miss something. It’s anybody’s race and on the last lap I hope it’s mine.”

Live coverage of the AMP Energy 500 begins on ESPN at 1 p.m. ET and will also air on MRN Radio.

Kyle Busch’s Crew Makes it a 3-Way Tie for Tissot Pit Road Championship

No. 18 team captures Tissot award in Martinsville

By winning the Tissot Pit Road Precision Award in Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, Kyle Busch’s No. 18 crew moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Tissot season standings.

With four Sprint Cup races remaining in the 2010 season, the crews for Busch, Jeff Gordon and Jamie McMurray lead the Tissot standings with four wins each. The crews for Matt Kenseth and Clint Bowyer are tied for second with three wins.

In the event there is a tie at the end of the season for the Tissot Pit Road Precision Award championship, the tiebreaker goes to the team whose driver finishes the highest in the Sprint Cup point standings.

Along with $5,000 going to the weekly winning pit crew, the team with the most Tissot Pit Road Precision Award wins at the completion of the 36-race schedule will receive a $105,000 bonus plus Tissot watches for the over-the-wall crew members and driver.

The No. 18 crew’s victory at Martinsville came as a result of Busch’s M&M’s Toyota spending the least amount of time on pit road – 280.163 seconds. The effort helped Busch post a strong fourth-place finish in the TUMS Fast Relief 500.

Busch’s over-the-wall crew consists of: Nick Odell (front-tire changer), Brad Donaghy (front-tire carrier), Jake Seminara (rear-tire changer), Kenny Barber (rear-tire carrier), Jeff Fender (jackman), Tom Lampe (gasman), Jason Hinson (catch can). The team’s pit crew coach is Mike Lepp and the crew chief is Dave Rogers.

“I think that the M&M’s team is the best week in and week out on pit road,” said Busch. “They are fast. They don’t get the credit they deserve. Martinsville isn’t one of my favorite tracks and we didn’t qualify well on Friday, so our pit selection was limited. The guys really had to be on their game because of our pit stall. The guys gave me good stops all day long and helped us keep that track position. I’m really proud of the effort by Dave (Rogers, crew chief) and everyone on the M&M’s team. Those guys win me a lot of races and get me a lot of good finishes. Martinsville was another one of those days.”

NOTES

Jamie McMurray and No. 1 Bass Pro Shops Tribute Team

Talladega Review: McMurray and the No. 1 team will return to Superspeedway racing this weekend at Talladega. McMurray has won two of the last four restrictor-plate races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series having won the 2009 fall event at Talladega and the 2010 Daytona 500. His victory marked his best finish at Talladega where he has led 166 laps and has five top-five and six top-10 finishes in 16 starts. Outside of his 2009 victory, McMurray had his second best finish in the first 2010 NSCS event at Talladega coming home in the second-position. His best start was in the Fall of 2003 when he started on the outside pole.

Martinsville Recap: Consistency and hard work has continued to payoff for McMurray and his team in the Chase’s first six races, this includes their 11th-place finish at the bull ring that is Martinsville Speedway on Sunday afternoon, battling back from a pit road speeding penalty during the first round of pit stops, coming home 11th, with a car that resembled a vehicle from the movie Mad Max.

Bass Pro Shops Special Tribute to “The Intimidator”: The No. 1 Chevrolet will carry a special tribute paint scheme this weekend at Talladega. The paint scheme will be reminiscent of the black and gold Bass Pro Shops paint scheme that Dale Earnhardt ran in the 1998 All-Star race. The tribute is in honor of Dale Earnhardt being inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame’s inaugural class. Talladega was selected as the venue to run the tribute paint scheme because it marks the 10th Anniversary of Dale’s 76th and final Cup victory. The only other time the special black and gold Bass Pro Shops paint scheme appeared on track was during the 1998 Sprint All-Star Race (then known as “The Winston”) on the No. 3 Chevrolet of Dale Earnhardt. The paint scheme was compliments of his longtime friend and fellow racing and fishing enthusiast, Johnny Morris, Founder/CEO of Bass Pro Shops.

Bass Pro Shops and Dale Earnhardt: The name Earnhardt and Bass Pro Shops have become synonymous in NASCAR racing circles over the last 15 years. The company, founded by Johnny Morris, joined forces with Dale Earnhardt Inc. in the mid-eighties, the relationship continues to this day as Bass Pro Shops continues their partnership with the Earnhardt name through their sponsorship of the No.1 Bass Pro Shops / Tracker Boats Chevrolet of Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, driven by Jamie McMurray. Bodine and No. 30 Valvoline Seeking Third Talladega Win

Bodine Leads Truck Series Championship Battle by 282-point margin

Has Earned Four Wins this season, 21 in his Truck Series Career

Germain Racing has 22 Truck Series Victories and Nine Pole Awards

October 26, 2010 (Mooresville, N.C.) – Talladega Superspeedway will be a welcome sight for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series points leader, Todd Bodine, and the No. 30 Valvoline Tundra crew of Germain Racing. Bodine cleared one of the two remaining unknowns on the 2010 Truck Series schedule as he seeks his second championship title. He and the Germain Racing team left Martinsville Speedway with a third-place finish and a 282-point lead and turned their sights on the last big variable in the championship puzzle—Talladega.

“Talladega is the last big unknown on the schedule for this Germain Racing team. We have been to victory lane at Talladega twice, we’ve sat on the pole there, but, we know that when we unload the No. 30 Valvoline Tundra at Talladega, there’s a lot about how it finishes that’s beyond our control. As a crew chief, I’ve got even less control than the man behind the wheel,” said crew chief Mike Hillman Jr.

Truck Series champion Todd Bodine, who continues to lead the 2010 standings by a record-setting margin after racking up four wins and two pole awards to add to his NASCAR career totals, calls Talladega a wild card.

“We saw it at Daytona, how close we came to winning that race and how we missed out at the very last second. Talladega is an even bigger wild card than a Daytona or a Martinsville. It’s a track where you have to be as lucky as you are good. This No. 30 Valvoline Tundra team is really good at Talladega. We have two wins there. With the right luck this week, we’ll get our third win at that track,” said Bodine, who has finished fourth or better in each of the four Truck Series events at Talladega, including two wins and one pole award. Further, Bodine has finished fifth or better in each of the 10 superspeedway races.

While Talladega is a wild card on the schedule as far as the final result, Hillman Jr. explains that this team knows what to expect when they unload in the Alabama infield.

“The truck we are racing is the same truck we’ve used for all four of our superspeedway wins. We know this truck. We know that the No. 30 Valvoline Tundra will be one of the top trucks right off the trailer. A lot of that confidence comes from all of the hard work put into this truck by the guys in the paint shop, the fab shop, and by our team members. And, a lot of our confidence comes from the guy behind the wheel – Todd Bodine. He has a unique talent for tracks like this and it kind of makes my job from the pit box a little bit easier,” said Hillman, whose team has chosen chassis TRD-058 for Talladega duty.

Watch Bodine the No. 30 Valvoline Tundra on Saturday, October 30th, at Talladega Superspeedway. You can watch the action on SPEED beginning with practice at 10:00 AM Eastern on Friday, followed by qualifying that afternoon at 4:40 PM and racing on Saturday at 3:00 PM. RACE NOTES

Johnson has made 17 Sprint Cup Series starts at Talladega Superspeedway, where he has earned one win, four top-five and seven top-10 finishes.

Johnson has completed 95.9% (3092 of 3225) of competition laps at the 2.66-mile tri-oval and has led 201.

He has an average start and finish of 9.7 and 17.8.

Chassis

Johnson will pilot brand new chassis No. 618 in Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race.

Back up chassis No. 482 was driven to a sixth-place result at Talladega last November.

QUOTES

IS THE RUN FOR THIS CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR ANY DIFFERENT THAN ANY OF THE OTHERS THAT YOU HAVE WON? “Yeah, I think that every other championship has helped me be more confident in my abilities, what my team is capable of; and there are probably some other emotions

that are wrapped up into it that all lead to the fact that I am much more relaxed fighting for this championship than any other championship in my life. So experience really helps out a lot and I have enjoyed these last five races more than I did the last year and the year before, and so on.

“I feel like I am in a really good place where some guys that are fighting for their first championship, there is so much on it. I have been there, so I know exactly what those feelings are like. I feel like it’s helpful for me to be this relaxed and to come in and not obsess over things during the week and to come into the track with a fresh mind and a ton of energy and go to work. So I really hope that the experience gives me an upper hand through the championship battle.”

AT TALLADEGA, THERE IS REALLY NO WAY OF STAYING OUT OF THE BIG ONE. YOU’VE DONE IT BOTH WAYS, AT THE FRONT OF THE PACK AND THE BACK OF THE PACK. IS IT REALLY A ONE IN 200-LAP SHOOTOUT THAT YOU NEVER REALLY KNOW AND THERE’S NO SURE WAY OF AVOIDING IT? “We’ve tried both approaches and the last three years we’ve made it through there (the big crash) without any big trouble. I can remember Bobby Labonte at the front of the pack racing Talladega one time and gets flipped over and ends up landing on Tony Stewart, who is trying to ride at the back to be smart for points. So there is no safe place. We see a lot of teams trying to be conservative and smart and get to the end of the race and go from there and the problem we have now is when everybody decides with 20 (laps) to go, that it’s time to race, you have to race. You need the best finish you can get and that’s where the crashes are. So I think we all feel better if we go 480 miles and then get crashed. It really sucks to crash at five miles into the race or something. I think that’s what we’ve done over the years is there’s no need to push the envelope now if something weird went on, we could miss that. But at the end you’ve got to pull (the belts) tight and drive through there and try to get the best finish you can.”

SPRINT CUP SERIES CAREER NOTES

Career Wins

Johnson has 53 wins in his Sprint Cup Series career, his most recent coming at Dover International Speedway on Sept. 26, 2010.

The El Cajon, Calif.-native is currently 10th on NASCAR’s all-time wins list, one victory behind Lee Petty.

He is second in total wins among active drivers, behind Jeff Gordon (82).

Johnson needed only 296 starts to hit the 50 mark. Only three drivers have reached 50 victories quicker – Gordon (232), Darrell Waltrip (278) and David Pearson (293).

Johnson has won at least three Cup races a season since he posted his first victory in 2002. He is the only driver in the modern era to win at least three races in each of his first eight full-time seasons.

Johnson has won Sprint Cup Series races at all but four (Michigan, Chicago, Watkins Glen, Homestead) of the 22 tracks on which the series competes.

Johnson was the first driver to win three of the first five races in The Chase.

Johnson’s 10 wins in 2007 was the highest number recorded in a single season since Jeff Gordon posted 13 victories in 1998.

The four-consecutive wins scored by the No. 48 team in the 2007 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup ties a modern-era NASCAR record.

Career Poles

Johnson has collected 25 poles in his Sprint Cup career.

The championship driver has earned at least one pole a year since his first full-time season in 2002.

He had a career-high six poles in 2008.

Johnson’s most recent pole position was at Dover International Speedway on Sept. 24, 2010.

Career Starts

In 32 2010 starts, Johnson has collected six wins, 15 top five and 19 top-10 finishes.

Johnson has finished in the top five in the Sprint Cup Series point standings each year since his first full season in 2002.

Johnson is the only driver to qualify for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup every year since the format was adopted in 2004.

In 323 Sprint Cup Series starts, Johnson has posted 132 top-five and 199 top-10 finishes.

He has a top-five finish at every track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit.

Johnson has led a total of 10,992 laps (of 93,127) in his Sprint Cup career, covering over 124,543 miles.

He has finished on the lead lap 249 times.
