Jason Hathaway Starts NCAT Season With Solid Finish, To Run Sunset Speedway on Sunday

[/media-credit]Last weekend, Jason Hathaway got his 2012 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season off to a solid start with a solid sixth place finish in the Vortex Brake Pads 200 at Canadian Motorsport Park (CTMP).
“This was a great way to start the season off,” Hathaway says. “The facility looks great and the crowd was like nothing we have seen at this track before! We want to thank our sponsor Vortex Brake Pads for sponsoring the race today and it was great to see all of our customers and VIPS in the suite today! The fans got to see a great race and we are pretty excited about our 2012 season.”
He was started the day off well as he was seventh in practice and qualified sixth for the race. He made his way up to second before a caution on lap 18. He then chose to make a pit stop, dropping him back to 12th, though was back up to ninth by lap 30. Hathaway got up to seventh by lap 38 and made his final pass of the afternoon on Robin Buck on lap 47 to finish sixth.
The driver of the No. 3 Rockstar Energy Drinks/Vortex Brake Pads car for Ed Hakonson Racing was looking to get off to a solid start in 2012 after a wreck in turn two due to a broken rear brake line last year at CTMP broke his wrist and thumb, hurting his driving abilities all last year.
“It was good to get back here and test during the off season,” he says. “It helped to work through that second corner and shake the car down.”
With the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series having this weekend off as teams prepare for the next road course event, Hathaway is not slowing down as he will be running round one of the McColl Pro Series at Sunset International Speedway in Innisfil, Ontario on Sunday.
The series is a four-race invitational that has its own points fund, with Open Late Models, Super Stocks and Mini Stocks. Hathaway will be competiting in the Open Late Model division against some of the best Open LM drivers in Ontario. Past track champions and big race winners are all expected to be in attendance at Sunset on Sunday.
“We are really looking forward to having some fun this weekend at Sunset,” the driver says. “We have the weekend off of our NCTS program and this is a great way to spend it. I love the chance to go back to my roots for a weekend and drive a late model. It should be a lot of fun! “
Hathaway will be behind the wheel of the #61 Vortex Brake Pads/ King Brewery Chevrolet owned by Bryan Watts Motorsports out of Uxbridge, Ontario.
Jimmie Johnson rides momentum to third place qualifying effort

[/media-credit]Coming off of his win the Sprint All-Star race, Jimmie Johnson qualified for the Coca-Cola 600 in the third position.
Johnson says the lap was 90 percent, as turns three and four felt good while turns one and two were off.
“You just never know really what that grip level is going to be,” he adds. “I went in there committed; I just didn’t have the grip that I hoped to have once I landed. “But we have a great race car. I’m just very proud of everybody on this Lowe’s Chevrolet. The cars have been very fast and really great couple of weeks for us and we hope to keep things rolling.”
This marks his 17th top 10 start in 22 races at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
“Just real proud of where our equipment is going,” Johnson says. “I always have been able always race better than I qualify. Our qualifying effort this year has been improving week in and week out.”
In 11 races so far this year, Johnson has qualified top-five twice and in the top-10 six times.
“I can’t express enough how important that is on pit road and late in the race,” Johnson continues. “It just opens up so many options for you on two versus four tires. Good in’s and out’s to your pit stalls. I’m very proud of the effort today.”
The car that the No. 48 Lowes team decided to bring to Charlotte is a different car than the car they ran in the All-Star race, due to the timing of when it had to be ready.
“We just couldn’t get it turned around in time,” he says. “I guess we got the car back Tuesday afternoon. With us checking in and needing to be here Thursday, there wasn’t enough time, if it was a Friday, normal Friday qualifying session we could have. But this car was different it took a different set-up from a qualifying stand point.”
Johnson says he noticed the differences with the springs and the lines that he has been running on track.
Johnson has been riding a wave of momentum lately as he comes in looking for third win in a row, counting both last week’s All-Star race and the Bojangles Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. The win at Darlington marked the 200th Sprint Cup win for car owner Rick Hendrick.
“I have been sitting up here telling all of you that we are close and it is coming and look at the laps led and all that stuff,” he says. “I’m glad to be able to back up what I have been talking about over these last few months. It really just boils down to the hard work that has come through the engine shop, chassis shop, our engineering staff and the crew chiefs.”
Johnson says that his success as of late, along with Dale Earnhardt Jr. winning the All-Star Showdown and a segment during the all-star race, have boosted the guys in the No. 48/88 shop.
“The No. 48 and No. 88 shop there is a lot of excitement,” he says. “Junior won a couple of times the other night. The wins we have had, there is excitement in the No. 5 and No. 24 shop, but those guys have had some terrible luck. As a group we are just hopeful that luck will leave them alone, they will be able to finish where they deserve and where they have been running in these races. But, the company is still on a high from the 200th win, the All-Star win just kicked that up another notch. I’d expect all four cars to be real strong.”
Now Johnson comes to the track that he claims as “my house” after six wins (including four in a row), 10 top fives and 14 top 10s in 21 starts.
Despite starting up front on Sunday night, Johnson knows he will get caught back in traffic due to the varying pit strategies as people will gamble with taking two tires or just fuel for track position.
“I want to be smart and if I can work on my car in traffic a little bit in practice just because at some point there is going to be that deal where you lose track position,” he says. “It is so important. If you can’t fight your way through there and pick up some spots then you are a sitting duck.”
Johnson will enjoy the clean air at the start of his 22nd race at Charlotte Motor Speedway behind the Richard Petty Motorsports teammates.
“I’m happy for those guys, it’s a smaller team that is working hard and I know it’s a big day for them,” he says. “I wish it was us, but we will come back and learn a little more Saturday and go racing.”

[/media-credit]This week’s picks will be short and sweet as I had a rather poor showing in last week’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, have not been able to watch much of this week’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Practice sessions, and am starting a long weekend in Philadelphia this afternoon and have limited access to stats. I can’t even say I will be able to watch much of the race on Sunday evening, but I know from the way last week’s All-Star race shook out, Sunday’s Coke 600 will surely turn out to be action packed with plenty of drama. There was no holding back last week in Concord, and being one of the more prestigious NASCAR Sprint Cup Series trophy’s, the 43 drivers making the start Sunday will push for each and every position in NASCAR’s longest race.

There was a lot to pick last week, and I did not capitalize on the opportunity to improve my stats this year. I picked the Sprint Showdown, Sprint Fan Vote, four segment winners in the Sprint All-Star Race, and the million-dollar Sprint All-Star Race Winner. I picked one of the four segment winners but nothing more than that…
Dale Earnhardt Jr. was not on my radar for more than the Sprint Fan Vote last week, but came out of nowhere to win the Sprint Showdown, and the fourth segment of the 2012 Sprint All-Star Race. Jimmie Johnson was my segment two pick, whom managed to win the first of the four stanzas last Saturday. It was Johnson that went on to win the cool million after the 10-lap shootout, and it was me left shaking my head when my winner pick crossed the line in 15th-place.

Winner Pick
I think Jimmie Johnson is bringing the car to beat again this week to Concord. He drove to the front in fairly commanding fashion last week, and has the endurance to withstand the onslaught from the rest of the field for 600 miles on Sunday Night. Johnson will start immediately behind pole-sitter Aric Almirola, inside the second row, and will avoid trouble back in the pack. He was 11th on the charts during Sprint Cup Practice yesterday in Concord.
Dark Horse Pick
I’ve been watching this guy on 1.5-mile intermediates for the past season or so, and am thinking this may be Marcos Ambrose’s ‘Oval Coming Out Party’. He raced very well in last weekend’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star race, and was able to finish in the Top-5 in 3 of the 4 20-lap segments last week. He finished the 10-lap sprint to the cool million in 7th place, respectable for the road-course specialist. the No. 9 DeWalt Ford was the fastest car on the track during Thursday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Practice, and will start on the outside of the front-row for Sunday’s 53rd Annual Coca-Cola 600.
Bonus Pick: Indianapolis 500
I can’t let one of the world’s most famous races go by without adding my insight… I’ve been watching May’s Indy 500 practices and qualifying, and am excited to watch my first IndyCar race of the season. The lime-green GoDaddy car has caught my eye in each of the month’s practice and qualifying sessions, and I have been gripped by the personality of James Hinchcliffe as well. He’s starting second on the grid in the first race on Sunday, and I am looking at him to make a statement and drinking the milk on Sunday.
