Busch wins at NHIS

NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series

Kyle Busch led four times for 75 of 200 laps en route to his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory on Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Busch’s No. 51 team used pit strategy to get the win by only taking a splash of fuel to minimize their time on pit road.

“It barely made it. It ran out (of fuel) coming into victory lane.” Busch said.

This was Busch’s his fifth win of the season and also gave Toyota five consecutive victories in the series.

“It was a great race today. I’m real proud of the guys and Richie (crew chief) for working so hard on these trucks. We come to these tracks and sort of struggle sometimes. This is I think our third year together now and we seem to hit on something a little bit better not quite as good as the 33 or the 2 but there at the end we were out front when it mattered and had just the right amount of fuel in order to make it.” Busch said.

Busch has now won at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in all three of NASCAR divisions.

“That’s cool, man. That’s something special. We look to do that everywhere we go but we’ve been fortunate enough to have good race trucks like we’ve had this year.” Busch said.

Ron Hornaday finished second, Kevin Harvick third, Matt Crafton fourth and Johnny Sauter finished fifth.

Hornaday sits atop the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series point standings by 217 points over Matt Crafton with just six races remaining.

“It was a good day until after the race I guess. I didn’t know, I thought I was better than Kevin (Harvick) for a while and then he had newer tires.” Hornaday said.

The series heads to Las Vegas Motor Speedway next Saturday night.

Kyle Busch outduels Mark Martin, returns to Victory Lane at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Kyle Busch held off Mark Martin to win the Sharpie 500 Saturday night at the Bristol Motor Speedway in front of the track’s 55th straight sold-out crowd.

A four-lap shootout between Busch and Martin followed a 10-minute red-flag period started when Michael Waltrip blew a tire after contact with David Reutimann with nine laps to go. Busch and Martin battled side by side for three laps before the No. 18 pulled ahead for good on the final time down the backstretch.

Busch climbed from his car, which went untouched by Martin during their battle for the lead, with more praise for Martin and the competition than himself.

“Racing in the Sprint Cup Series with these guys is really an honor,” Busch said. “And Mark Martin, what a class act. He deserved to win this race.

“We didn’t have the best car tonight, but we had a car capable enough of doing it if I drove it hard enough.”

The same upbeat Busch appeared from his car in Victory Lane as did Wednesday after a Truck Series win, also at Bristol. Busch’s crew chief Steve Addington was feeling the same vibe as his team inched closer to the Race to the Chase cutoff line with the win.

Addington said that even during Busch’s slump, which saw last season’s top seed in the Chase finish outside of the top 10 in 10 out of the series’ last 13 races, he never doubted the team’s potential to win.

“That guy sitting behind that steering wheel right there is the man,” Addington said of his driver. “We’ve just got to get back on our track with giving him what he needs to win races. We’ll get this M&Ms Toyota in the Chase on way or another.”.

Rookie Marcos Ambrose finished third, Greg Biffle fourth and Denny Hamlin fifth. Dale Earnhardt Jr. fell from fifth to finish ninth in the final four laps.

Eleven yellow flags waved at Bristol for a total of 75 laps, with five caution periods occurring after lap 400 of the 500 scheduled. Rain threatened to stall the race after causing the race’s penultimate caution, but storms held off long enough for Busch to hand the checkered flag to a fan and do a reverse-direction victory lap.

Shaking up the points battle were Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson, who struggled through radio problems and poor pit stops, respectively. Stewart remains ahead of Johnson by 220 points.

Busch’s victory brought him to 33 points outside the Chase cutoff. After being involved in two separate incidents, Clint Bowyer’s Chase hopes were dashed.

Fireworks could fly between Kyle Busch, Brian Vickers during Bristol pre-race

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Saturday night’s race at Bristol Motor Speedway could be interesting from before the start.

After a press conference with reporters Friday, Brian Vickers once again criticized Kyle Busch for being “so mad about something so small.” Vickers was once again reacting to the end of last weekend’s Nationwide Series Race at Michigan, when Brad Keselowski flew by the two drivers on the outside as they fought amongst themselves for the lead.

Both drivers are trying to make the Chase, and they qualified in close proximity — 14th and 15th.

The pre-race procedures have been changed for Saturday’s Sharpie 500, as drivers will walk out of the Turn 3 tunnel to the tune of a song of their choice before entering a truck that will escort them around the track.  Both Vickers and Busch will ride in the same truck by virtue of their close qualifying positions.

Here’s to both of them making it to the race in one piece.

Brad Keselowski wins Nationwide Series pole in telling day for his future

BRISTOL, Tenn. – After leading Nationwide Series final practice, Brad Keselowski won the pole for Friday night’s Food City 250 at the Bristol Motor Speedway.

Keselowski’s lap of 120.565 mph paced the field that will include Sprint Cup Series drivers Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, Kasey Kahne, Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Reed Sorenson and David Reutimann.

While the No. 88 sat firmly on the pole, news leaked that the JR Motorsports driver would be headed to Penske Racing, which competes under the Dodge banner in the Sprint Cup Series, in 2009. Keselowski chose to remain mum on his future plans.

“I really am not in a position to talk about any of that stuff right now,” Keselowski said. “I’m really not prepared to address any of the rumors about next year. I’m here to race the Nationwide car and win with it tonight and I am not going to let anything get in the way or distract us from that end.”

Edwards will roll off second, Bowyer third, Kenseth fourth and hometown favorite Trevor Bayne rounds out the top five. The green flag is expected to fly shortly after 7:30 p.m. ET.

Mark Martin on pole for fifth time this season at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Mark Martin will start from the pole for the fifth time in the 2009 season Saturday night at the Bristol Motor Speedway in the Sprint Cup Series Sharpie 500.

Martin’s lap of 124.484 mph was just good enough for first, edging second-place Greg Biffle by just over two one hundredths of a second.

“We just ran so many really special laps,” Martin said. “I believe the law of averages caught up with us. I didn’t need to choke today.

“We got a great lap again, and so that was really really good.”

Rookie Scott Speed qualified fourth in his effort to return the No. 82 team back to the top-35 in points, Dave Blaney drove his start-and-park operation to a season-high fourth and Matt Kenseth will roll off fifth.

David Ragan earns second Nationwide Series win after showdown with Carl Edwards at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. – David Ragan shot ahead of Carl Edwards in a green-white-checkered finish to win the NASCAR Nationwide Series Food City 250 Friday night by a 1.379-second margin.

Debris on the .5-mile oval’s frontstretch brought out the race’s final caution with eight laps remaining, setting up a two-lap run to the finish four laps after regulation. Ragan, who earlier in the race saw Edwards jet ahead on the outside line on a double-file restart, elected to take to the outside as the leader.

“The outside was just great all night,” Ragan said. “I really struggled passing cars on the bottom.

“I just can’t say enough about our Nationwide team and everybody back at the Roush Fenway shop.”

The win was Ragan’s second Nationwide Series victory this season, his first coming at Talladega last spring. Ragan gained the lead after maneuvering lapped traffic to where he could pin Edwards in the preferred middle groove and drive by on the bottom.

Edwards said he hesitated to overdrive his car and hit Ragan, his teammate, on the restart with a good points day the risk.

“David’s car was just so much faster through the center,” Edwards said. “I just can’t say enough about David Ragan. We didn’t come here to finish second, but he’s a great guy.”

Points leader Kyle Busch was involved in an incident with the lapped car of Chase Austin on lap 54 while leading. Busch came out from the garage after repairs and ended up 28th, 59 laps down.

Busch led one lap before contact with Austin, but his points lead was cut to 248 with Edwards’ second-place finish. The series heads to Montreal next weekend, where Edwards will again look to slim Busch’s lead down.

Pole-sitter Brad Keselowski finished third after an eventful night that saw him nudge leader Justin Allgaier, cut down Allgaier’s tire and sustain enough front-end damage to head to pit road off sequence.

The incident, which Keselowski said was “100 percent” his fault, sent Allagaier spinning for the first time of the night.

“I just was racing hard and I guess I was racing a little too hard,” Keselowski said. “I feel terrible about it. He had a really great car and could have won the race.”

Allgaier’s second spin on lap 250 ended the race before the white-flag lap was completed.

Kevin Harvick, who won at Bristol in the spring, was fourth and Matt Kenseth fifth after recovering from a spin on lap seven.

Kyle Busch snaps Ron Hornaday’s winning streak with come-from-behind effort at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. – As evidenced by a wide smile and upbeat attitude in the Bristol Motor Speedway’s Victory Lane, his swagger was back, his style no longer cramped.

Kyle Busch ended Ron Hornaday’s Camping World Truck Series streak Wednesday night at the .5-mile bullring, winning the O’Reilly 200 for the second year in a row. The victory was Busch’s first in 17 NASCAR National Touring Series races and third in the Truck Series with Billy Ballew Motorsports.

“For some reason I’ve really taken to the new surface,” Busch said. “I loved the old surface. I love the new one.”

Since being wrecked by Tony Stewart approaching the checkered flag in July’s Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona, Busch has slipped to 15th in the series standings, three spots outside the Chase for the Cup cutoff line officially drawn after only three more races.

While winning in the Truck Series doesn’t help his Cup car get faster, Busch said it will aid his confidence as a driver.

“It just gets the momentum going. It just tells you that you can do it,” Busch said. “I’m my myself’s biggest critic. This definitely helps out. Gets me back in the right mindset. Gets me back in the right frame.”

The race wasn’t decided after pit strategy played out. Busch and crew chief Richie Wauters elected to come in under the race’s first caution, take four tires and stay out for the remainder of the race. The strategy worked out, but not before Busch picked off most of the field’s lead-lap cars along with Jason White, who led 86 laps in a gutsy bid to win his first Truck Series race.

Wauters said the tire compound keyed the No. 51 team’s strategy.

“The tires, they’re so hard here. They’re not falling off,” Wauters said. “It seems like when they cool down you can run just like you have stickers on again, so we decided to stay out. It was the right call tonight.”

Busch finished ahead of the second-place car of Matt Crafton and third-place Hornaday. The two are locked in a points battle that was trimmed to 211 points following 200 laps at Bristol, where Hornaday has multiple wins but hasn’t fared as well on the track’s revamped surface.

Wednesday night, a pit-stop error would doom any chance of Hornaday continuing his record streak, which hasn’t seen the No. 33 team anywhere but in Victory Lane since the series visited the Milwaukee Mile in June.

“We ran good, we just ran into some bad luck,” Hornaday said. “Kyle was just so dominant up top, and he had his truck free enough in the beginning. I learned that, and when he pitted and came right back in for fuel, that’s hurt us right there.

We lost too much track position right there. It was my own fault. I should have been paying more attention.”

The race was slowed five times for a total of 32 laps.

Pole-sitter Ryan Newman, who competed in the NASCAR Modified Series race earlier in the day, finished fourth. Brian Scott rounded out the top-five finishers with a no-tire strategy, still recovering from an accident at Michigan that broke his arm.

PAUL MENARD QUOTE:

Menard’s Thoughts on Racing at Kansas Speedway:

“Kansas is a fun track to race on, especially with the new pavement. It’s really fast, one of the fastest tracks we race on all year. With the new pavement, the racing groove is narrow and mostly on the bottom of the track. As we continue to run races there, the groove will build up and get wider. It should be a good race and I’m looking forward to going back. We had a really good car there earlier this year and got a top-10 finish. We ran really well there last year also, so we’re looking for good things for our Menards/SPLASH Chevrolet SS this weekend.”

To purchase tickets to the hospitality area please visit, http://www.kansasspeedway.com/Vanity-Pages/2013/Finish-Line-Hospitality.aspx, or call 1.888.341.7223.

Race Rewind … After starting from the 10th position, Harvick and the No. 29 Budweiser team earned an 11th-place finish during the 2012 edition of the fall race at Kansas Speedway after spending much of the 267-lap affair running in the top 20 while battling handling issues.

KEVIN HARVICK QUOTE:

The racing surface at Kansas Speedway was recently repaved. How long does it usually take you to adapt to the racing surface as it ages between race weekends and seasons?

“Kansas (Speedway) will be a little different this time because of the tire change Goodyear is making for this race. Because of the tire change we have an open test day at the track before the race weekend begins, so we’ll have some extra time to get used to the racing surface and what’s going on with the aging and wear. In general, it depends on the environment the track is in that will change the racing surface. The asphalt they use to pave these race tracks now is made to last a long time on roads and it’s really not the right asphalt to use for a racing surface. Tracks seem to age a little slower than they did in the past and it’s not really what we’re used to.”

Race Rewind 2012 … Contact with another competitor on lap 84 sent Burton’s No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet spinning into the outside retaining wall and relegated the team to a 28th-place finish at Kansas Speedway in October 2012.

JEFF BURTON QUOTE:

What changes do you expect to see from the April NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Kansas Speedway?

“It’s important to understand when you go back to a place which has been recently repaved that you might be going back to a completely different race track. It has been a hot summer in the Midwest part of the country and that typically changes race tracks quite a bit. We have to be open-minded when it comes to our setup for Kansas Speedway. It will also be nice to have that extra day of practice on Thursday leading into the normal race weekend. It will give the Caterpillar team the opportunity to test setups and learn how the track surface has evolved.”

The Boise, Idaho driver is looking for personal redemption at the track this year and hopes that he will be able to clinch his best finish at Kansas Speedway during his first season with RCR.

BRIAN SCOTT QUOTES:

What was your experience like last year on the new pavement at Kansas Speedway?

“Unfortunately, I remember a lot. I was spinning around quite a bit during the race last year. We qualified third and were running second for the first run of the race. We were really fast, but way too loose and the thing (car) was just mean in dirty air.”

How will you prepare for your second time back at Kansas Speedway on the fresh pavement?

“I know when we go there with Richard Childress Racing it’ll be more about getting stability for dirty air, and not necessarily about trimming it out and going fast. The new pavement has so much grip that you can go fast by yourself, but it can really bite you when you get around other cars; I was a victim of that last year.”

AUSTIN DILLON QUOTE:

What will it take to win the NASCAR Nationwide Series Championship this year?

“I think it’s going to take top-five finishes, and by top five finishes, I don’t mean you can finish fifth every weekend for the rest of the year and win the championship. I think you need to finish in the top-three consistently. Sam Hornish, Jr. and I are both really competitive and in order to win the championship, the No. 3 team is going to have to finish ahead of him every weekend. Kansas Speedway is a mile-and-a-half track where we have performed well at in the past. I’m really comfortable there and looking forward to this weekend’s race.”

DAKODA ARMSTRONG QUOTE:

What are your thoughts on competing for Richard Childress Racing in your final NASCAR Nationwide Series race of the season at Kansas Speedway?

“It’s going to be great to get back in the (NASCAR) Nationwide Series car with the same Richard Childress Racing team I worked with just two weeks ago. I think the short break will definitely play to my advantage, just because I’m comfortable with these guys and I’ll spend a lot less time getting accustomed to the car again. After a pretty solid run at Kentucky (Speedway), I think we can use some momentum from there and carry it over to Kansas (Speedway) this week. The track has changed a lot since they repaved it and it’s going to be completely different from Kentucky. I think the most important thing we’ll need to run up front is plain speed there, because handling doesn’t come into play quite as much anymore with the new pavement. I know Marcus Richmond (crew chief) and this crew will have our WinField Camaro dialed in right off the truck, and hopefully we can close out my last Nationwide Series race of the year with a top-10 finish.”

Paul Menard
No. 33 Menards Chevrolet Camaro
Event Preview Fact Sheet

This Week’s Rheem/Menards Chevrolet at Kansas Speedway … Paul Menard will pilot chassis No. 130 at Kansas Speedway. This No. 33 Chevrolet Camaro was previously run this season at Chicagoland Speedway where Kevin Harvick drove it to a ninth-place finish.

Race Rewind … Starting fifth, Menard led the most laps (110) before finishing 16th after running out of fuel two laps shy of the checkered flag in last year’s Nationwide Series event at Kansas Speedway.

PAUL MENARD QUOTE:

What are your thoughts on racing at Kansas Speedway?

“I’m looking forward to going back to Kansas (Speedway) to run in the NASCAR Nationwide Series event this weekend. We led the most laps there in last year’s race before coming up short on fuel in a green-white-checkered finish. We had the best car there last fall and I know the No. 33 team will give me another fast Rheem/Menards Chevrolet this weekend. This is my last Nationwide race of the season, so it would really be nice to get a win for No. 33 the guys. Kansas is a fast track and hopefully the racing groove will be a bit wider this time around than it was in the spring.”

Harvick Discusses Racing at Kansas Speedway

PAUL MENARD QUOTE:

Menard’s Thoughts on Racing at Chicagoland Speedway:

“Chicagoland Speedway is one of the newest facilities on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. Over the past couple of years the racing groove has widened, which allows for more passing opportunities. The backstretch there is slightly curved, but it doesn’t affect the car too much. Because of the curve, you’ve got to slightly turn the car left going down the straightaway. It’s a fun track and a fast track. We’ve had some good runs the past couple of weeks and hopefully that continues this weekend in Chicago.”

KEVIN HARVICK QUOTES:

What are your thoughts coming back to Chicagoland Speedway and kicking off the 2013 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup?

“I really like tracks like Chicagoland (Speedway) where the surface is a little bit worn out, because it makes for better racing. We were fortunate to win the first couple of races here, so Chicagoland has always been a really good race track for us as far as fans and following, too. DeLana (Harvick, wife) and I always enjoy coming in early for the Chase kick off, going into the city and having a couple of low key days before the weekend gets started.”

Talk about the Goodyear tire test you participated in at Chicagoland Speedway in May. Did the team learn anything they can use for the race this weekend?

“We had a really good test. Obviously a lot has changed since then from a setup standpoint because we’ve been trying out some different things recently, but I think we’re a little bit ahead of the curve going into this weekend. I feel pretty good about it. I think it’ll be a good weekend.”

JEFF BURTON QUOTE:

Do you like racing at Chicagoland Speedway?

“Chicagoland Speedway is one of the newest facilities we race on. It has really come into its own recently. Chicagoland is a fun and challenging race track. While it might look like a normal 1.5-mile layout, it is different in many ways. Both ends of the track are complete opposite as far as handling goes. Chicagoland also requires really good grip and there are some bumps that you have to factor in with the setup.”

In the 1860s, gold miners temporarily settled here to pan for gold but were unsuccessful and soon moved on. Following World War II, a group of businessmen and doctors from Lewiston, Idaho turned their sights to developing the lake for tourists. At its heart would be the iconic Shore Lodge, which opened on July 3, 1948.

BRIAN SCOTT QUOTES:

What did you figure out last month at Chicagoland Speedway?

“Chicagoland has always been one of my favorite tracks in the Nationwide Series. We had a fast Chevrolet Camaro there earlier this season, but our Achilles heel was restarts. We were too loose and would give up three or four positions each time, and once the run sorted out we would pass them back. Essentially, we were like a yo-yo all day, but our Camaro was on par with the leaders and lap times. We need to be able to pass on restarts and not be passed.”

What makes Chicagoland Speedway one of your favorite race tracks?

“I’ve always been strong at Chicagoland (Speedway) and have a lot of good runs. I’ve sat on the pole and had a couple top-three finishes, so I know it’s a place where I could always be a threat to win every time we show up to race.”

AUSTIN DILLON QUOTE:

You’ve been successful at Chicagoland Speedway in the past. Why do you think that is?

“Chicagoland Speedway has some rough characteristics and I seem to do well on those types of tracks, I don’t know why that is. It just suits me well, I guess. It reminds me of Kentucky Speedway and Iowa Speedway in that respect. Danny Stockman and the No. 3 team and I work well together and we’ve been able to build a pretty good notebook for a lot of tracks, including Chicagoland Speedway. Now that we’re going to a lot of these tracks for the second time this season, we have some notes to work off of and it gives us some confidence heading into the race weekend. We feel prepared so that we can gain maximum points.”

The company’s premium brands, including Rheem, Raypak, Ruud and Richmond have been recognized with countless industry and consumer awards for reliability, innovative design and high quality. Rheem is the official heating, cooling and water heating supplier to Richard Childress Racing, and is a primary sponsor of RCR’s No. 29 Chevrolet in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and RCR’s No. 33 Chevrolet in the Nationwide Series.

Double Duty … In addition to driving the No. 33 Rheem/Menards Camaro Saturday afternoon at Chicagoland Speedway, Harvick will also pilot the No. 29 Budweiser Designate a Driver Chevrolet SS in the Sprint Cup Series event on Sunday. This race is scheduled to air live on ESPN at 1 p.m. Eastern Time, along with the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90.

KEVIN HARVICK QUOTE:

What are your thoughts on driving the No. 33 Rheem/Menards Chevrolet at Chicagoland Speedway?

“Chicagoland (Speedway) has been good to me throughout the years. I enjoy racing at Chicagoland because the track is unique. You can go through the corners pretty much wide open. You can let off sooner than you do at most places we go to, and you can drive it all the way through the corners under power. There is a lot more throttle there than most places. You get back in the gas a lot quicker there too, compared to other places. We’ve gotten a few wins in the past, and I hope to pick up another this weekend for the Rheem/Menards team.”

TY DILLON QUOTE:

With seven races left in the season, what are your thoughts heading into the final stretch of the year before championship weekend?

“We’ve had some really fast trucks recently. We just haven’t gotten the finishes that we deserved. Last weekend was a true testament to how hard this Bass Pro Shops team works each week. They could have given up after our alternator died, but they kept their heads up and kept digging. This is what a championship caliber team is made out of. We’re not out of this thing yet. We’ll keep working towards wins and those wins will get us closer to the championship.”

Brendan Gaughan
No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Chevrolet Silverado
Event Preview Fact Sheet

BRENDAN GAUGHAN QUOTE:

What are your thoughts on racing at Chicagoland Speedway.

“Chicagoland Speedway is one of those types of tracks that I really like because the mile-and-a-half tracks are my kind of place. Even though these types of tracks fit me so well, Chicagoland is actually its own unique animal because both straightaways are bent, it’s more like an egg shape than an actual oval. It makes for a very unique race, and I can’t wait to get back there in Richard Childress Racing prepared type equipment.”
