Shane van Gisbergen notched his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series pole position for the Black’s Tire 250 at Richmond Raceway on Friday, August 14.
The event’s starting lineup was determined through an on-track qualifying session that consisted of a single-truck, two-lap qualifying format. During the session, each of the 39 competitors vying for 36 starting spots cycled around Richmond twice to post the fastest lap amongst one another. The competitor who posted the single fastest lap earned pole position.
During the session, van Gisbergen, who was the 15th-fastest competitor in practice earlier on Friday, utilized his two-lap qualifying trial to post his fastest lap at 116.540 mph in 23.168 seconds. The lap was enough for the three-time Supercars champion from Auckland, New Zealand to earn his first top-starting spot for a Truck event.
With the pole, van Gisbergen became the 151st competitor overall to achieve a pole position in the Truck Series division and the 47th to record a pole position across NASCAR’s top-three national touring series (Truck, O’Reilly & Cup). He also recorded the first Truck pole position for Spire Motorsports’ No. 7 Chevrolet team that is currently led by veteran crew chief Kevin ‘Bono’ Manion. After notching two third-place results this season, including his stellar third-place run at North Wilkesboro in mid-July, van Gisbergen will strive to contend for his first Truck career victory during Friday night’s main event in Richmond, Virginia.
Van Gisbergen will share the front row with Kaden Honeycutt, the latter of whom posted his fastest lap at 116.470 mph in 23.182 seconds. Chandler Smith, Grant Enfinger and Nick Leitz will start in the top five, respectively. Parker Eatmon, Ty Majeski, Andres Perez De Lara, Stewart Friesen and Tyler Ankrum completed the top-10 starting grid, respectively.
Notably, Layne Riggs, the series’ points leader, qualified in 11th place while Tristan McKee will roll off the starting grid in 13th place for his Truck Series debut. In addition, Elliott Sadler, who is piloting Kaulig Racing’s No. 25 ‘Free Agent’ RAM 1500 entry for a one-race Truck appearance at his home track, will start in 32nd place.
With 39 competitors vying for 36 starting spots, Kasey Kleyn, Caleb Costner and Justin Carroll were the trio who did not make the main event.
