Location: Sunset Speedway June 28 -29, 2014
What won the race: Night 1 defending Biederman Champion Dwayne Baker looked like he was ready to add his name to the trophy for a second time. After starting 3rd in the 50 lap feature event it took the #48 till lap 30 to wrestle the lead away from the #17 of Cornelius. The next 20 laps was all #48 up front to record his first feature win of 2014 and putting the pressure on the rest of the field to wrestle the overall championship away from him. Kevin Cornelious placed a strong 2nd. The best battle of the feature was between the #22 of Glenn Watson and the #70 of Jeff Hanley, lap after lap they fought side by side with a great display of racing action. At the checkers the #22 won the battle and placed 3rd with the #70 of Hanley settling for 4th. The #81 of Andrew Gresel after winning time trials earlier in the evening brought the car home in 5th place.
Night 2 of the Biederman Memorial arrived with intense heat and the threat of rain. Every driver picked right up where they left off on Saturday. The first heat race saw the closet finish of the weekend, with the #48 of Baker taking the win over the #22 of Watson by a mere .003 of a second. That win gave the #48 what he needed a front row starting spot for the feature event. After suffering through a tough heat race that found the #17 of Cornelius buried deep in the field in 8th place for the start of the feature. The #70 of Jeff Hanley took advantage of his 2nd starting spot and took the early lead in the feature, leading the first 26 laps. During this time the #17 quickly moved his way through the field and was able to wrestle the lead from Hanley on a lap 27 restart. With the lead now his all Kevin could do was hope that the #48 of Baker would finish 3rd or worse to become the overall champion. Dwayne knew what he had to do to take the trophy home with him and tried everything he could to pass Hanley. When the checkered flag waved it was the #17 crossing the line 1st with Hanley being able to hold off Baker for 2nd and Baker rounding out the podium. With Kevin recording a second and first place finishes that gave him an average finish of 1.5 over both nights, awarding him and his team the Biederman Championship.
Bad Luck of the event: Making their 2014 season debut was the #27 of Roy Passer. Unfortunately their weekend was short lived as they suffered transmission issues which side lined them for the weekend. #47m of Brent McLean is still suffering motor issues which unfortunately made their weekend very short.
Rookie Battle: Four Rookie of the Year candidates were in attendance. At the end of each feature event it was the #b10 of Kelly Balson finishing 7th and 5th each day for top rookie of the race honours. #44 Dave Doucette recorded a 13th and 12th place finish. Corey Jones had a very respectable 9th and 14th place finishes. Ethan Courneyea returned to action and recorded a 18th and 15th place finish. Scott Field was not in attendance as he waits on his motor repairs, but expects to return to the series at Kawartha on the 13th of July
