CHEVROLET PLACES FOUR IN TOP-10 AT HONDA INDY TORONTO

TORONTO (July 16, 2023) – In what proved to be a chaotic Honda Indy Toronto on the streets of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Chevrolet claimed four of the top-10 finishing positions, with Josef Newgarden, driver of the Snap-On Team Penske Chevrolet, finishing fifth. Following Newgarden was his teammate Scott McLaughlin, driver of the No. 3 Gallagher Insurance Team Penske Chevrolet, in sixth with Arrow McLaren INDYCAR teammates Pato O’Ward, No. 5 Chevrolet, finishing eighth, and Felix Rosenqvist, No. 6 Chevrolet, taking the checkered flag 10th.

Eventful from the start, the Bowtie brand faced challenging, tight conditions on the 11-turn, 1.786-mile course through the streets of Toronto. After 85 laps, Newgarden reflected, saying “It was pretty big (the fuel save) at the end. Thank goodness I was trying to do a little more than we needed to in the final stint just to prepare for the end. None of us knew what was happening there or what was going to happen with two laps to go. We must have had some fuel error issue because they’re going off our calculations and normally they are always spot on. So something must have been messed up today, which we were unaware of. (…) I’m proud of my team. They did a great job. We tried to recover as best as possible. We’ll have to take our top-five but unfortunately it was a day that maybe could have been better but we just didn’t realize it.”

“(It was an) up and down for us today in the Gallagher Chevy,” said McLaughlin. “We had a really fast car and probably a winning car. But things didn’t go our way on the strategy. I’ll back my guys to the tilt. I think we chose the right strategy. It was just an awkward time and we couldn’t make up for what we lost. It is what it is. We win together and those together. We’ll push on. Another top-six finish so we’ll keep knocking them out. But it is a frustrating day when you think we sort of easily could have won that race.”

Rookie NTT INDYCAR Series racer Agustin Canapino, driver of the No. 78 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet, drove a strong weekend for his first event on the streets of Toronto. After qualifying 11th in highest starting position of his young IndyCar career, he matched his career-best finish from St. Petersburg and Texas in 12th.

“I’m really, really happy,” said Canapino. “It’s my first time here with the team. We did a really good race and were really strong. We maximized everything. We battled with the top teams all the time. (…) For our performance, I’m really happy and really grateful for the whole team.”

Chevrolet shifts gears back to oval competition, traveling to Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa for the 11th and 12th rounds of the 2023 NTT INDYCAR Series Season. If I didn’t get the numbers and attacked too hard too soon, it’s my fault. I was trying to put pressure on the two guys in front to run them out of fuel and probably not watching mine close enough.”

Pato O’Ward, No. 5 Chevrolet at Arrow McLaren INDYCAR:

“It was a tough day for us. We just keep making the same mistakes that don’t help our races go forward. We need to look into what the issues have been and fix those because they’re obviously valuable points that we’re just throwing away. But Iowa is coming next, and we’re usually pretty strong there.”

Felix Rosenqvist, No. 6 Chevrolet at Arrow McLaren INDYCAR:

”It was a bit of a tough day for us. We were fighting tire degradation quite a bit. We kind of ended up on a strategy to save a bunch of fuel, and even with the fuel-save we were degging pretty hard. We lacked a bit of straight-line speed, which we’d done all weekend, but it seemed even worse in the race. We have to take a look at that and analyze it. The car didn’t have much pace, and I feel a top 10 was still pretty decent, but I’m not super stoked with the result.”

Alexander Rossi, No. 7 Chevrolet at Arrow McLaren INDYCAR:

”We got a good start, and then there was a track blockage in Turn 1. I kept the engine running, but by the time the safety car got there and got everyone cleared out of the way, we went a lap down. Then we were a lap down the whole day, trying to get our lap back, but it never came. You’re always subject to that kind of thing when you start in the back. From there, it was just a day of attrition, and we couldn’t really do anything. It’s unfortunate, and it feels like a lost weekend, for sure.”

“Overall a pretty disappointing day. It could have been a lot worse. The fueling issue on Pato’s car that we need to dig into to understand compromised his race. “It’s been a tough year and to be in contention for somewhere around 8th, that would have been a really good result for us. Unfortunately, we just had that long pit stop. The guys do their best and we have really good stops, but we had some bad luck we couldn’t anticipate. We lost around 10 seconds and that was a bummer. I went all out afterward and gave it my all, we didn’t have much tire left at the end. Just a huge shoutout to my BITNILE.COM crew. We had a good car and the strategy was good. It was a tough one, but we definitely have some positives to take to the next race.”

Santino Ferrucci, No. 14 Chevrolet at AJ Foyt Racing:

“We got caught up in that first-lap incident with just nowhere to go. A car in the wall spun in front of us and our teammate piled in behind us. It’s not his fault because he was in the same boat as I. Unfortunately when he got hit, he broke his gearbox so I couldn’t back up. That trapped us a lap down. We also had a completely crushed floor. We just really kind of maintained and survived today. To come home 17th today was the best we could have done.”

Benjamin Pedersen, No. 55 Chevrolet at AJ Foyt Racing:

“We had a really good start. Made good progress on the cars in front of us headed into Turn 1. There was unfortunately a crash on the exit of Turn 1 and just had nowhere to go. I came to a stop to avoid it and then got hit from behind. That damaged our gearbox and we weren’t able to get out of the gear we were in. Unfortunate ending. It was completely out of our control. I know a lot of cars were involved in that. Bittersweet. We had very good moments throughout the weekend where when we were able to get the car in the window, we were actually very quick. Sometimes within top-six pace. But we just struggled to get the car in the window the majority of the weekend. The speed is there when the car is in the window, but the big thing for us is just trying to have it like the other teams have. Onwards to Iowa. We know we’re consistently delivering when the car is there. We’re just trying to do our best to keep the car in the good window.”

Christian Lundgaard dominates for first IndyCar career victory in Toronto

In his 28th career start in the NTT IndyCar Series, Christian Lundgaard etched his name as an IndyCar Series race winner after capping off a dominant run from pole position to win for the first time in the Honda Indy Toronto at Exhibition Place in Toronto, Canada, on Sunday, July 16.

The 21-year-old Lundgaard from Hedensted, Denmark, commenced the sport’s lone visit north of the border in Canada by notching his second IndyCar career pole on Saturday, July 15, amid mixed weather conditions. Amid a multi-car incident in the opening lap, Lundgaard proceeded to lead the first 18 laps before surrendering the lead to pit amid alternate strategies ensuing within the field. Through more on-track chaos and mixed strategy, Lundgaard, who briefly led from Laps 37 to 48, assumed the lead for good on Lap 62 after Scott Dixon surrendered the lead to pit under green. For the remainder of the event, Lundgaard methodically stretched his advantage while navigating his way around the 11-turn circuit and beat runner-up and championship points leader Alex Palou by more than 11 seconds to achieve his first checkered flag in the IndyCar circuit.

With on-track qualifying that determined the starting lineup occurring on Saturday, July 15, Christian Lundgaard captured his second IndyCar career pole after posting a pole-winning lap at 100.217 mph in 1:04.1567. Joining him on the front row was Scott McLaughlin, who posted the second-best qualifying lap at 99.716 mph in 1:04.4790.

When the green flag and the race commenced, Lundgaard rocketed ahead with the lead while McLaughlin veered right to defend the runner-up spot ahead of Pato O’Ward and his No. 5 Arrow McLaren Dallara-Chevrolet through Princess Blvd. and entering the first turn. The field then fanned out to multiple lanes through the first two turns as Lundgaard continued to lead.

Then as the field entered Lake Shore Blvd., the first caution of the event flew when Tom Blomqvist, the reigning two-time Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona winner who was making his IndyCar debut for Meyer Shank Racing and as an interim competitor for the injured Simon Pagenaud, got pushed and squeezed into the wall amid a three-wide battle involving Ryan Hunter-Reay and Jack Harvey. With Blomqvist hitting the wall, Harvey and Hunter-Reay were also involved as they squeezed into one another and veered sideways and into the wall, thus igniting a stack up towards the rear of the field as Alexander Rossi, Santino Ferrucci, Sting Ray Rob, Benjamin Pedersen and Graham Rahal were also involved.

Following an extensive caution period, the race resumed under green flag conditions on the ninth lap. At the start, Lundgaard retained the top spot ahead of McLaughlin as the field navigated its way through Princess Blvd. before navigating through the first two turns and entering Lake Shore Blvd. The field proceeded to navigate its way through Turns 3 and 4 before entering Ontario Dr. before navigating back on Princess Blvd. and Manitoba Dr. Following another series of turns from Turns 5 to 11 and back to the frontstretch, Lundgaard continued to lead and he would retain the top spot through the Lap 10 mark while McLaughlin, O’Ward, Marcus Ericsson and Scott Dixon were battling in the top five.

Through the first 15 scheduled laps, Lundgaard was leading by more than three seconds over McLaughlin while O’Ward retained third. Behind, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Ericsson and Dixon were running in the top five while Kyle Kirkwood, Flex Rosenqvist, Will Power, Josef Newgarden and Colton Herta were running in the top 10. Behind, Marcus Armstrong was in 11th while Romain Grosjean, Alex Palou, Rinus VeeKay and Helio Castroneves were mired in the top 15.

A lap later, Armstrong, who was battling Grosjean for 11th, pitted under green. Rosenqvist and David Malukas would pit during the following lap under green as Lundgaard was leading by more than four seconds over McLaughlin. More pit stops would then ensue the proceeding lap as Kirkwood and Newgarden pitted.

Then on Lap 19, McLaughlin cycled into the lead as Lundgaard pitted under green. Once Lundgaard returned to the track, he was mired in 12th in between Juncos Racing’s Callum Ilott and Agustin Canapino while McLaughlin, O’Ward, Ericsson, Dixon and Power were running in the top five. O’Ward would then surrender third place to pit at the Lap 20 mark, where he would blend back on the track in 14th.

At the Lap 25 mark, McLaughlin was leading by more than two seconds over Ericsson while Dixon, Power and Herta were running in the top five. With Grosjean, Palou, VeeKay, Castroneves and Lundgaard running in the top 10, O’Ward was still mired in 14th while Newgarden was back in 17th in between Rosenqvist and Marcus Armstrong.

Five laps later, McLaughlin continued to lead by more than four seconds over Ericsson while third-place Dixon trailed by more than five seconds. With Power and Herta running in the top five, Palou navigated his way around Grosjean for sixth while Lundgaard was up in eighth ahead of VeeKay and Castroneves. Another two laps later, Grosjean pitted from the top 10 under green while McLaughin retained the lead by more than five seconds over Ericsson. Herta would also pit from the top five followed by Augustin Canapino.

Then on Lap 30, McLaughlin navigated his No. 3 Gallagher Dallara-Chevrolet onto pit road for his first pit service of the day as Ericsson cycled his No. 8 Huski Chocolate Dallara-Honda into the lead. Ericsson would then pit during the following lap followed by Castroneves and Callum Ilott. With Dixon cycling his No. 9 PNC Bank Dallara-Honda into the lead, McLaughlin was scored in fifth behind Lundgaard. On Lap 37, however, the top-three competitors that included Dixon, Power and Palou pitted under green as Lundgaard cycled back into the lead. Following their pit stops, Power managed to muscle ahead of Dixon and Palou on the track and within the top 10 while Ericsson was in fifth following his pit service.

Then as the event was approaching its halfway mark on Lap 41, the event’s second caution flew when Grosjean lost control of the steering of his No. 28 DHL Dallara-Honda and veered straight into the wall just past Turn 10 as his strong run came to an end. At the moment of caution, Lundgaard was leading ahead of McLaughlin, O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood and Ericsson while Newgarden, Power, Dixon, Palou and Rosenqvist were in the top 10.

During the caution period, some names including Kirkwood, Rosenqvist, Palou, Herta, Malukas, Graham Rahal and Callum Ilott pitted while the rest led by Lundgaard remained on the track. Not long after and prior to a restart on Lap 46, the event quickly returned under a caution period when Kirkwood ran into the rear of Castroneves’ No. 06 SiriusXM Dallara-Honda and sent him spinning in Turn 11, thus ending his race, as Palou sustained damage to his front wing after hitting the wall while trying to avoid Castroneves. Despite the contact, Palou continued to run on the track despite concerns of his front wing being damaged.

Amid the extensive caution period, a majority of the field led by Lundgaard pitted for fresh tires and fuel while some including McLaughlin, Dixon, VeeKay, Kirkwood, Herta and Palou remained on the track with alternate strategies ensuing.

When the race restarted under green with 34 laps remaining, McLaughlin jumped ahead of Dixon to retain the lead through the first two turns and entering Lake Shore Blvd. With the field fanning out, a series of battles ensued as Lundgaard and O’Ward were trying to navigate their way towards the front from the top 10. Amid the battles, Kirkwood, who was running within the top five, pitted after being assessed a stop-and-go penalty from the contact with Castroneves while VeeKay, Palou and Herta were in the top five.

With 30 laps remaining, McLaughlin was leading by eight-tenths of a second over fellow Kiwi competitor Dixon while VeeKay and Palou were in the top four. Behind, Lundgaard moved up to fifth and was trailing the lead by more than seven seconds while Herta, O’Ward, Power, Ericsson and Newgarden were in the top 10.

Four laps later, VeeKay pitted from third place, which allowed Palou, Lundgaard and Herta to move up one spots respectively into the top five while McLaughlin was leading by more than a second over Dixon. McLaughlin would then surrender the lead to pit with 25 laps remaining as Dixon cycled into the lead followed by teammate Palou and Lundgaard.

Then with 24 laps remaining, Lundgaard, who pulled a bold overtake on Palou through Turns 3 and 4 to take second place, cycled back into the lead after Dixon pitted under green. In the ensuing laps, Power overtook O’Ward for fourth while Palou, who continued to proceed at full pace despite his damaged front wing, retained second ahead of Colton Herta.

Down to the final 20 laps of the event, Lundgaard was leading by more than two seconds over Palou while Herta, Power and O’Ward were running in the top five. With Ericsson in sixth, Newgarden, Marcus Armstrong, Rosenqvist and Agustin Canapino were in the top 10 while Dixon and McLaughlin were mired back in 14th and 15th, respectively.

With 10 laps remaining, Lundgaard retained the lead by nearly seven seconds over Palou while Herta, Power and Ericsson were scored in the top five. In the process, Newgarden, Armstrong, O’Ward, Rosenqvist and Dixon were in the top 10. By then, David Malukas retired four laps earlier after making contact with the wall and damaging his suspension.

Five laps later, Lundgaard extended his advantage to more than nine seconds over Palou, who was being pressured by Herta amid his front wing damage as Power and Ericsson started to close in on the battle.

When the white flag waved and the final lap started, Lundgaard remained as the leader by more than 10 seconds over Palou, who continued to run strong on the track amid his front wing damage in front of Herta. By then, Power and Ericsson both pitted after coming up short on fuel, which allowed Newgarden and Dixon to move into the top five. With no competition lurking behind him, Lundgaard, driving the No. 45 Vivid Clear Rx Dallara-Honda for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, was able to navigate his way around the 11-turn circuit smoothly for a final time and cycle back to the frontstretch to claim his first career checkered flag in the IndyCar circuit.

With the victory, Lundgaard, who is currently campaigning in his second full-time season in the IndyCar circuit and whose previous best result was second place that occurred at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course last August, became the first competitor to achieve a first IndyCar race victory since Kyle Kirkwood won at the Streets of Long Beach, California, this past April. He also recorded the first victory for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing since the team last won the 2020 Indianapolis 500 with Takuma Sato. Lundgaard also joined Adrian Fernandez and the late Justin Wilson as competitors to achieve a first IndyCar victory at Exhibition Place in Toronto, Canada.

With the victory, Lundgaard, who celebrated his first IndyCar win with his friend, Victor, vowed to shave his mustache he grew during the offseason amid the promise that he would do so once he would win an IndyCar race.

“I’m pretty drained from energy right now,” Lundgaard, who led a race-high 54 of 85 laps, said on Peacock. “The Hy-Vee VIVID car has just been fast all weekend. I said it before the race [that] we had a car that was fast enough to win. We pulled it off and I think we did by 10 seconds. This team, they do deserve this because if we look at where we were early this season and even last year at this point, we were nowhere near this, so I’m just extremely happy for everybody right now. Everything [the owners] are doing for this team, we’re moving forward.”

“[This win]’s huge for us,” Bobby Rahal, co-owner of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, added. “Any win’s big. We were knocking on the door at Mid-Ohio with Graham’s [Rahal] qualifying run and Christian’s for that matter. This weekend, it wasn’t easy. We didn’t start out really super great, but we kept working at it. Christian was hooked up. I think he just was kind of like on a mission this weekend. You saw that on that race. He just drove away from everybody. The crew did a great job. That strategy in the No. 45 pit was the right strategy and Christian just didn’t put a foot wrong. A great weekend for us. “

While Lundgaard celebrated a first victory, Palou, who started the lowest of this season in 15th, was left relieved on pit road after having enough power to nurse his No. 10 Journie Rewards Dallara-Honda with the damaged front wing home in the runner-up spot, one spot shy of achieving four consecutive IndyCar victories following recent victories in Detroit, Road America and Mid-Ohio, while Colton Herta achieved his first podium result of the season by finishing third just as he ran out of fuel.

“We knew it was going to be an eventful race,” Palou said. “I had a lot of ups and downs. We had a really fast car. I don’t know how we made it with this wing. The car was still handling OK, and then we just had to save a ton of fuel, a ton of tires. But we made it. Glad we finished P2 today. A win could have been possible, but I did a bad qualifying yesterday. As long as we have fast cars like we’ve been doing, we’re going to be OK. The guys did an amazing strategy call. It was tough to save that much fuel, but they just put me on that position. Kudos to the No. 10 car.”

Dixon, who won last year’s IndyCar event at Toronto, came home in fourth while Newgarden settled in fifth. McLaughlin, Armstrong, Pato O’Ward, Graham Rahal and Rosenqvist completed the top 10 on the track. Notably, Ericsson and Power ended up 11th and 14th, respectively, while Kirkwood ended up 15th.

There were seven lead changes for four different leaders. The race featured three cautions for 16 laps. In total, 15 of 27 starters finished on the lead lap.

Following the 10th event of the 2023 NTT IndyCar Series season, Alex Palou continues to lead the championship standings by 117 points over teammate Scott Dixon, 126 over Josef Newgarden, 142 over teammate Marcus Ericsson and 143 over Pato O’Ward.

NASCAR Cup Series event at New Hampshire postponed to Monday

NASCAR has postponed the start of the Cup Series’ Crayon 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway to Monday due to inclement weather in the form of persistent rain and a flash flood warning near Loudon, New Hampshire that will occur throughout the event’s originally planned start on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET.

The postponement of the Cup Series event at the Magic Mile, which will serve as the 20th points-paying event of the 2023 schedule, also means that the event will now air at noon ET Monday on USA Network.

New Hampshire is no stranger to being pitted against Mother Nature which would result in the Cup Series event at the Magic Mile being delayed or shortened due to rain. Recently, the Cup event at New Hampshire in July 2021 which was won by Aric Almirola, was shortened by eight laps due to darkness and following an early rain delay. Before this, the Cup New Hampshire event in June 2009 was shortened by 28 laps due to a late-race rain delay that was eventually deemed official by NASCAR and where Joey Logano, who was a rookie competitor, claimed his first Cup career victory.

NASCAR’s postponement of Sunday’s Cup event also comes amid a recent string of on-track delays due to Mother Nature this season, such as when the weather affected the sport’s inaugural Chicago Street Course weekend events that resulted in the Xfinity Series event being shortened just shy of its halfway point. The Cup event at Chicago was also delayed by 90 minutes before commencing late Sunday and being shortened 25 laps shy of its scheduled distance. This past weekend, the Cup event at Atlanta Motor Speedway was shortened by 75 laps due to late inclement weather that resulted in William Byron being awarded his fourth victory of the 2023 season.

When the event starts, Christopher Bell, the reigning Cup Series winner at New Hampshire who notched his first pole position of the season after posting a lap at 124.781 mph in 30.524 seconds during Saturday’s qualifying session, will lead the field alongside teammate Martin Truex Jr., who posted the second-best qualifying lap at 124.752 mph in 30.531 seconds.

With the postponement set, the Cup Series’ Crayon 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway will commence on Monday, July 17, at noon ET on the USA network.

SOUTH BOSTON, VA…….Jacob Borst scored a breakthrough win and Carter Langley was awarded his seventh win of the season in the twin 70-lap races for the Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division that highlighted Saturday night’s Billy’s A/C Service Night Race at South Boston Speedway.

Borst’s win in the first of the two 70-lap races for the Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division was his first victory of the season at South Boston Speedway.

“I feel like we’ve had a monkey on our backs all season,” the Elon, North Carolina resident remarked. “The first win of the year is the hardest one to get. We’ve tried a lot of new stuff throughout the year, and we’ve struggled a little bit with it and luck hasn’t played out for us until tonight.”

Langley’s win in the night’s second 70-lap race resulted from the disqualification of apparent race winner Landon Huffman. Huffman had edged Langley and Borst by less than a second to secure what would have been his first career win at the .4-mile oval.

After the race, Langley’s team protested Huffman’s car, citing the shock absorbers on the car. Track officials found the shocks on the number 22 car driven by Huffman did not conform to NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series Late Model Stock Car Division rules.

As a result, Huffman was disqualified, and Langley was declared the race winner. Huffman was also stripped of his apparent runner-up finish to Borst in the first 70-lap race.

The number 22 team cited it was an oversight as the shocks were approved for non-NASCAR competition.

“I’ll take wins as they come,” Langley said with a smile. “They are not easy to get, so you take as many as you can when you can.”

It was a tough race for Langley who needed treatment by medical staff after the race to help him overcome the effects of the hot, humid weather and exhaust fumes that got into the car.

“I got into the backstretch wall, and it knocked the exhaust in and let some fumes into the car,” the Zebulon, North Carolina resident explained. “I really wasn’t feeling well after the race.”

With the disqualification of Huffman, Langley was credited with a runner-up finish behind Borst in the opening race. Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Virginia finished third, Justin Hicks finished fourth and six-time South Boston Speedway champion Peyton Sellers of Danville, Virginia finished fifth after his car was heavily damaged in a multi-car mishap on the fourth lap of the race that also involved Langley. Langley’s car sustained only minor damage.

In the nightcap, Borst finished second behind Langley with Hicks taking third place. Sellers finished fourth driving his back-up car and Camden Gullie of Durham, North Carolina rounded out the top five finishers.

Borst led 35 laps of the first 70-lap race and Langley led the first 43 laps of the second race.

It was a good points night for Langley. He entered the twinbill with a four-point lead over Sellers, and by finishing three positions ahead of Sellers in both races, Langley has padded his lead in the quest for the track title.

Crews, Barnes Split Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division Twinbill
Nathan Crews of Long Island, Virginia and last season’s division champion, Kyle Barnes of Kyle Barnes of Draper, Virginia split wins in the twin 30-lap Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division races Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.

Crews’ win was his third victory of the season at South Boston Speedway and Barnes’ win was his second win of the season here.

The division has seen have been six different winners in the 10 races run this far this season.

In the first race, Crews took the lead from pole winner Bob Davis of Thaxton, Virginia on the ninth lap and edged runner-up Jason Myers of Hurt, Virginia by 2.735 seconds in a 12-lap sprint to the finish that followed the final caution period.

Carter Russo of Rougemont, North Carolina, Davis, and Barnes completed the top five finishers.

In the nightcap, Barnes edged Russo in a two-lap dash to the finish that followed the last of the race’s three caution periods to earn his second win of the season at South Boston Speedway.

Zach Peregoy of Clarksville, Virginia, Jared Dawson of Nathalie, Virginia and Ross Mountcasel of Crewe, Virginia rounded out the top five finishers.

Barnes led 28 laps of the 30-lap race.

Johnny Layne Takes Win In 25-Lap Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division Race
Two-time former division champion Johnny Layne of Halifax, Virginia held off last year’s division champion Scott Phillips of Halifax, Virginia to win the 25-lap Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division race Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.

Layne has now won five of the eight races run in the division this season at South Boston Speedway.

Caleb Sanford finished third, followed by Andrew Turner and Zach Reaves of Danville, Virginia.

Andrea Ruotolo Tops Field In The 20-Lap Virginia State Police Heat Hornets Division
Andrea Ruotolo of South Boston, Virginia captured his second win of the season in Saturday night’s 20-lap race for the Virginia State Police HEAT Hornets Division.

Ruotolo took the lead from Landon Milam of Keeling, Virginia on a restart with three laps to go and edged Jason DeCarlo of Chase City, Virginia by .579-second to earn the win.

Steven Layne of Halifax, Virginia finished third with D.J. Moser of Ringgold, Virginia and Dillon Davis of Nathalie, Virginia completing the top five finishers.

There have been five different winners in the eight races held in the division this season.

Johnson, Lawson Are Winners In 20-Lap East Coast Ford Flathead Racing Association Race
Johnny Johnson of Tobaccoville, North Carolina won the Modified Division trophy and Wayne Lawson of Indian Valley, Virginia took home the Sportsman Division winner’s trophy in the 20-lap race for the regional touring East Coast Ford Flathead Racing Association Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.

Johnson was the overall race winner.

NASCAR racing will return to South Boston Speedway on Saturday night, June 17 with the Davenport Energy Race Night.

Twin 75-lap races for the Sentara Health Late Model Stock Car Division will headline the night’s racing action. Also scheduled are a 50-lap race for the Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division, twin 15-lap races for the Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division and a 20-lap race for the Virginia State Police HEAT Hornets Division.

Frontstretch spectator gates open at 3:20 p.m. Practice will start at 3:30 p.m. and qualifying will begin at 6 p.m. The first race of the night will get the green flag at 7 p.m.

MORRISON, Colo. (July 15, 2023) – Justin Ashley’s continued excellence in the Mission 2Fast2Tasty Challenge was showcased just outside of Denver as the points leader earned his fifth Challenge win, beating Austin Prock with a 3.883 sec. elapsed time. That time qualified Ashley in 11th, while Team Toyota was led by Doug Kalitta in second and Antron Brown in third.

In Funny Car, all three of the Toyota GR Supra Funny Car drivers closed with their best passes, led by Ron Capps with a 3.982 second pass. Capps starts eliminations from fifth, while former Funny Car champion and multi-time Denver winner, J.R. Todd, also starts inside the top half of the field.

Can you walk us through how you continue to have success with this challenge?

“It is incredible. You really try not to think about the championship this early out in the year, but how could you not, because these championship points are so critical, now that we are at 15, it’s really a dream come true. Now when they reset the points, everything pretty much starts from scratch – so that is why those 15 points are so critical. They are so important in the long run, so really ecstatic with all of these Mission Foods wins. We will just try to keep tagging them on and learning each and every time we go down the race track.”

Your crew chief didn’t act like this helped much for tomorrow. What did he mean by that?

Knowing Mike (Green) and all crew chiefs – they always want a little bit more. I’m sure he wanted to run a little bit better, especially in that last session, because the conditions were so good, but we’ve done it before from a number of different positions – as low as 14, as high as two or three, I think we’ve won races at. Sunday is a brand new day. I don’t think this run is going to have any correlation to tomorrow because the conditions are going to be so different. That race is going to be won or lost tomorrow based on who is able to go a-to-b most of the time, most likely. Mike Green and Tommy DeLago is always going to want more. They are just so good at what they do, so they are going to get it figured out.”

What is it like racing in this type of atmosphere?

“It’s incredible. We’ve raced in a lot of fun and exciting packed houses, Gainesville comes to mind, Phoenix comes to mind. There is something special about racing at Bandimere. When you go out there and you look at the crowd, the way the stands are built into the mountain – it’s really amazing and really motivating. I’m really sorry to see it go, but grateful to the Bandimere family for all they have done. Big opportunity to race tomorrow out here at the track that we all know, and the track we all love.”

Qualified in second, how do you feel going into race day?

“I feel good. It was nice to move up a little bit in that last session. It seems like our Mac Tools Toyota Dragster is running good. We’ve been going down the track all of the rounds. I’m looking forward to tomorrow. It is kind of bittersweet being the last one, so it would be nice to running towards the front at the end of the day.”

Joe Gibbs Racing driver wins under caution following green-white-checkered finish.

LOUDON, N.H. – The NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) makes one annual visit to the Granite State each year, and the latest visit may just have cemented a new championship contender.

John Hunter Nemechek avoided several multi-car wrecks and held on through two late restarts, including a green-white-checkered finish on his way to a victory in the Ambetter Health 200 NXS race on Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS).

Driving the No. 20 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, Nemechek collected his NXS-leading fourth win of the season, the sixth of his career and his first at “The Magic Mile.” It was also Joe Gibbs Racing’s 199th career NASCAR victory.

“I am so proud of this 20 team,” said Nemechek, who led a race-high 137 laps. “I’m so thankful for this opportunity. Hats off to all of our guys at Joe Gibbs Racing, and a huge shout-out to all of the fans here. I love coming up here [to New Hampshire].”

Nemechek, a 26-year-old North Carolina native, was up front much of the way, allowing him to miss several big wrecks throughout the race, including nine-car crash following a restart at lap 70, a three-car spin in turn one on lap 196 that led to the green-white-checkered finish and a two-car collision just after he took the white flag, leading to his victory under caution.

“I was a little worried on the last restart,” said Nemechek, who has raced full-time in all three NASCAR national series. “I didn’t know who was saving what. I’m so thankful to sit behind the wheel of this 20 car.

“The goal has been to win races, but that’s very hard to do. There’s some really tough competition for sure. We’re going to do everything we can to be there at the end.”

Pole-winner Chandler Smith (10 laps led) finished second, with Austin Hill placing third, Daniel Hemric in fourth and Sammy Smith (stage two winner, 18 laps led) in fifth. Justin Allgaier led 27 laps and won stage one before finishing sixth.

“We definitely have some work to do with this package,” said Hill, who trails leader Nemechek by 33 points in the NXS standings. “For us to salvage a third-place finish, with us not having that great of a car, we’ll take it and move on.”

Notable finishes among New England natives included Kaz Grala (Boston, Mass.) placing 13th in a backup car following a crash in practice. C.J. McLaughlin (Framingham, Mass.) came in 28th, Parker Kligerman (Greenwich, Conn.) was 32nd and Anthony Alfredo (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished 34th.

Nemechek completed the overtime-aided 206-lap event in two hours, 38 minutes, 40 seconds, averaging 82.417 mph with 20 cars finishing on the lead lap. Seven leaders exchanged the lead 13 times with 10 caution periods taking up 60 laps.

NHMS’s NASCAR weekend events concludes Sunday with the Crayon 301 NASCAR Cup Series race at 2:30 p.m. ET (USA, PRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Mohegan Sun 100: Bonsignore Streaks to Wild Victory, Capping Doubleheader Saturday at “The Magic Mile”

Three-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion holds off Coby, Silk in thrilling finish.

LOUDON, N.H. – Justin Bonsignore edged Doug Coby by half a car length to conclude a thrilling Mohegan Sun 100 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (NWMT) race on Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS).

Annually one of the crown jewel stops in the NWMT, “The Magic Mile” brought out the best in the popular series as Bonsignore, Coby and Ron Silk all exchanged the lead across the final 10 laps, sometimes multiple times in the same circuit.

“That was just crazy,” said Bonsignore, the pole winner, a two-time New Hampshire winner and a three-time NWMT champion. “The way we were able to drag race back to the line and beat Doug was amazing. This is our Super Bowl, this is our Daytona 500. There’s nothing like racing here.”

The dramatic finish came after the race was delayed by more than an hour following a passing rain shower that put the race under red flag conditions with 69 of the scheduled 100 laps complete.

Once the drivers returned to their cars, a round of pit stops for fuel and tires ensued, scrambling the field. Bonsignore restarted 10th after the delay and slowly picked his way through the field until taking the lead for good on the backstretch just before taking the white flag. The 35-year-old from Holtsville, N.Y. kept the No. 51 Chevrolet on edge from there, with Coby and Silk just behind at the end.

“I’m glad we got that back going again for the fans that stuck it out,” said Bonsignore after his second victory of the season. “[Cody, Silk and I] have a good rivalry but there’s a lot of respect involved. They came over and congratulated me. We went really conservative [on pit road], stayed patient and got to the lead. I knew where I wanted to be [on the track] on the last lap.”

Coby was second, Silk finished third, with Austin Beers fourth and Patrick Emerling fifth. NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) regular Corey LaJoie finished seventh.

“I started this race really good and then we got too loose,” LaJoie said. “The etiquette for modified racing is a bit more brash than I was used to. The modifieds is one of my favorite series to run. They are unlike any other car I’ve driven.”

Twenty-two drivers finished on the lead lap.
