TOYOTA QUOTES

MARTIN TRUEX JR., No. 19 Reser’s Fine Foods Toyota Camry TRD, Joe Gibbs Racing

Finishing Position: 1st

Is there a win you wanted more than this one?

“I don’t think so. What we’ve been able to do here over the years is pretty remarkable, and to not win was really getting frustrating. James (Small) and I talked about it many times. We thought about it all weekend, talked about it with Christopher (Bell) before the race. He’s like, man, you’ve led more laps here than I’ve even raced in Cup. Just really an awesome job by everybody. What a race car we had today. Just proud of the whole team. Pit stops were flawless. Race car was unbelievable. We had some challenges at times throughout the race and it was a handful at times, but we just kept our heads down, kept digging. Thanks to everybody at racers, Bass Pro, Auto Owners, Toyota TRD, everybody back at the shop, JGR (Joe Gibbs Racing), all our fans, Oakley, FlightSafety, just all the people that help us. This is feeling really, really good to do what we did today and finally cap it off with a lobster.”

How much significance does that add to this for the Truex family?

“It’s a lot. That’s a big part of it. I sat in Turn 1 with my mom. My little brother was drinking out of a bottle, so it was — we were young, 12, 13, maybe 14, whatever. But this is the first big track I ever came to with my dad and watched and the first time I ever seen Cup cars in person and Busch cars in person. It’s been a special place for us. Being able to win K&N, being able to win the Busch Series, this one has been eluding me for a long, long time, so I’m just really, really happy, really thankful, and I can’t say enough about my team, man. They’re incredible. I’m lucky I get to drive these things.”

What were you thinking on those final few restarts? Cautions kept coming out and you had it in hand.

“Stop wrecking, everybody just stop wrecking. Yeah, luckily, we were able to hold them off. The car was just so fast. I don’t know, I don’t even know what to say. I’m speechless. Been after this one a long time. This one is sweet.”

Here you are, finally. How does it feel?

“It feels amazing. I’m so proud of everyone on our team and all of our sponsors. What a Reser’s Camry we had today. I kept waiting for something stupid to happen, like always does here. We’ve led so many laps here over the years but could never lead that last one. Today, the car was on rails, and the guys did a great job. We were able to make our way through traffic better than normal. Tough day, but we fought hard and had a lot of speed.”

What were you thinking after that late two-tire stop?

“You just always hope you come out in the right spot and the guys around you have two. We did what we needed to. That was the right call. James (Small) has been on it this year and the cars have been fast and we’ve been clicking all cylinders. We’ve got a bad-ass team and I’m excited for the rest of the year.”

What else is left this year outside of a championship?

“That’s it. That’s all that matters right now. We’ve got to keep winning. Bonus points are huge for the Playoffs, and we racked them up today, so we’ve got to keep doing it.”

GMG Racing Secures Three Porsche 992 GT3 Cup Podium Finishes This Weekend in Porsche Sprint Challenge Doubleheader at Utah Motorsports Campus

  • Kyle Washington Scores Third-Place 992 GT3 Cup Am Finish in Saturday’s Opening Race in No. 234 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup
  • James Sofronas Doubles Up on Second-Place Overall and 992 GT3 Pro-Am Class Finishes Saturday in His No. 204 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

TOOELE, Utah (July 17, 2023) – GMG Racing secured a trio of podium finishes Saturday with a competitive performance in the USAC Porsche Sprint Challenge USA West by Yokohama same-day doubleheader at Utah Motorsports Campus (UMC). Kyle Washington, Todd Parriott and GMG Racing Principal and Founder James Sofronas all competed in the top-tier 992 GT3 Cup division in two different classes on the 3.048-mile UMC road course just outside of Salt Lake City.

Washington kept his 992 Am-class championship title bid alive with a third-place finish in Saturday’s first sprint race in his No. 234 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup while Sofronas finished second overall and in the 992 Pro-Am class in both races. Parriott in turn added to the team’s solid weekend of results with a pair of on-pace finishes just outside of the top five in his GMG Racing No. 289 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

If not for a late incident with a backmarker in Saturday’s second race, Washington was on track to join Sofronas as a double podium finisher at UMC.

“This weekend was all about getting back on the horse,” Sofronas said. “We had the long trip to Spa with the three of us and wanted to get back to some GT3 Cup car competition in the Porsche Sprint Challenge series. For Kyle, getting a third place finish in the first race was excellent, but in the day’s second race he got caught up with a competitor and that took him out of contention while running third. It was really unfortunate because he had great pace all weekend and was on track for multiple podiums like we expected. He still did a great job to recover for a fourth place finish after the contact which could be key in the Am championship in the final half of the season.”

Parriott’s best showing was in Saturday’s first race with a sixth-place finish, improving a position after starting seventh.

“Todd did a great job getting back in the saddle and pushing through a full schedule with back-to-back Saturday races,” Sofronas said. “He kept improving every session, even with the with minimal track time we all had over the two days, and put together a pair of solid finishes he can definitely build on going forward.”

Sofronas kept the heat on the overall and 992 Pro-Am race winner to the finish in both Saturday races. A lengthy mid-race caution minimized green flag opportunities in the opening race, but Sofronas pressured from the start in Saturday’s final sprint.

“I had a chance to pass the leader early,” Sofronas said. “At the start I knew I would get up to second place but then the leader was bobbling a little bit and I should have made a move in turn five. It was definitely a missed opportunity but I figured we would have more pace because we were on a different strategy. I was right there with the leader but then three lapped cars all from the same team made it very difficult to pass and that was the race.”

The Utah event brought the 2023 Sprint Challenge USA West championship to the mid-season point with the year’s remaining rounds set for Circuit of The Americas (COTA), WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and the 2023 finale at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMSA). The COTA and IMS weekends are national events with the USA West series competing alongside their peer competitors in the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America by Yokohama that races primarily in the eastern U.S.

“I am excited to go to COTA,” Sofronas said. “We are going to be fast there. There is going to be a test day at Indy and a test day at COTA and I am really looking forward to those. The main issue we had in Utah is that we were not able to test on the Wednesday and Thursday before the race when every other team was testing when we showed up. Along with Kyle and Todd, we all have busy lives with a lot of commitments on and off the track. We just couldn’t get to Utah early enough to test, but it is a huge credit to the GMG Racing team that showed they are up to the task of getting the cars competitive and quick right off of the trailer. We were on pace from the very first session.”

The COTA event weekend is the next order of business on GMG’s Sprint Challenge schedule, August 25 – 27, on the 3.462-mile Grand Prix circuit in Austin, Texas.

I need to thank Carl Ruedebusch, Dion Reif, and the Serial 1 Dealer Network for coming on board and giving me the opportunity to drive the No. 1 again.”

“After researching Kaz’s resume of racing accomplishments and spending time with him at the track the last few months, I have gathered a greater understanding of his approach to racing. It was obvious to me that we wanted to sponsor him and go for a win!” said Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Serial 1 Dion Reif. “In addition, we wanted to promote an amazing charitable cause, by partnering with Little Bricks at “The Tricky Triangle.” The non-profit is a transformative organization dedicated to uplifting the spirits of hospitalized children, which hits home for me and my family as well as our Serial 1 team members.”

“We are so excited to be teaming up with Serial 1 Premium E-Bikes to build BIG smiles on hospitalized kids across North America. Jr III Racing makes Lime Rock Park debut

Lakeview, Conn. (17 July 2023) – As prototypes return to Lime Rock Park for the first time since 2013, Jr III (“Junior-Three”) Racing will look to make history as the team makes its LRP debut this weekend. Jr III Racing will be competing in two 45-minute races with IMSA’s VP Racing SportsCar Challenge (VPRC) with the Saturday race day slated to be an intense one with a double-header schedule.

VPRC has had three rounds of competition this season starting at Daytona International Speedway and the most recent being at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (CTMP). Jr III Racing has entered into all three events with Bijoy Garg behind the wheel of the No. 3 Jr III Racing Ligier entry.

Twice, Garg has had to learn the track for the first time during the race weekend. But, he’s shown very well, claiming pole at every track so far. Garg has also ran the fastest lap of race one to secure pole position on two of three race two events.

During Garg’s first race weekend at Daytona International Speedway, Garg scored a third place finish in his first sports car race. Garg went on to Sebring International Raceway and swept the weekend with back to back wins. Most recently Garg drove to two second place finishes at CTMP.

“This will be my first time at Lime Rock Park,”said Garg. “I’m really confident in both the team and the car. I believe that we can get a setup down and I can adjust to the track quickly. Jr III Racing has always brought a fast car for me to drive and I’m excited to see what we can do at Lime Rock Park and hopefully grab a couple more wins.”

Although Jr III Racing will be making its Lime Rock Park debut, the team comes with a secret weapon and that is the team’s engineer Scott Heckert. Heckert grew up just over an hour south of Lime Rock Park in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Heckert took his first driving school at Lime Rock Park with Skip Barber Racing school and then went on to compete at the track in 2015 scoring a fourth place finish in Trans Am – TA2 and came back with Pirelli World Challenge in 2016 to grab a third place finish. Heckert returned in 2018 with Pirelli World Challenge and started the race from pole position.

Jr III Racing will start on track action at Lime Rock Park on Friday July 21. Both VP Racing SportsCar Challenge races will take place on Saturday July 22 and will be aired live on the Peacock app at 9:05 am ET and 3:05 pm ET.

Sean Creech Motorsport set for IMSA LMP2 debut

The Florida-based team has secured a Ligier JS P217 for the 2024 Season

JUPITER, Fla. (17 July 2023) – Sean Creech Motorsport (SCM) will enter the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the LMP2 class, moving from LMP3 competition with a recently-acquired Ligier JS P217.

“We’re happy to have our program set for 2024,” said team principal Sean Creech. “We wanted to stay in the prototype classes and our existing relationship with Ligier opened the door to staying with them. It’s the same number of races as LMP3, and the logistics are very similar to the program that we’ve been running the last few years, so it made sense to go with LMP2.”

SCM will make the switch to LMP2 after a long and successful history with the LMP3 class, which will no longer compete in the WeatherTech series. Since the Ligier LMP3-spec chassis was introduced in 2017, the team has contested each of the IMSA series that utilized the chassis: the WeatherTech series, the VP Racing SportsCar Challenge, and the IMSA Prototype Challenge. SCM won the 2018 IPC championship, campaigning a Ligier JS P3 under the Extreme Speed Motorsports banner.

Shipped from Europe, the Ligier arrives at the port of Miami this week, with the crew planning to begin prep immediately. They will also continue work on the No. 33 Focal One Ligier JS P320 that will contest the final three IMSA WeatherTech series races of the season – Road America, Indianapolis and Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta.

Creech has competed in a multitude of sports car series from the late 80’s until the present day, including Group C, IMSA GTP, WSC, Grand-Am, SRO World Challenge, and IMSA. With that diverse background, he anticipates a smooth transition from LMP3 to LMP2, thanks in part to the deep reservoir of experience that the SCM crew has developed through the years.

“We have a lot of crew members who have worked on the Ligier LMP2 car, so the changeover won’t be difficult at all,” anticipates Creech. “Our engineers are working to get all the data we need to start a testing program – the lead time to get a Gibson lease engine is long so hopefully we can get something going before that. We’ll look to get as many miles as possible over the winter to get completely up to speed on everything before Daytona.”

The Ligier JS P217 has previously raced in North America, most recently as the platform for the Nissan DPi, earning pole at Watkins Glen and winning at Road America, Petit Le Mans, Sebring and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Creech looks forward to remaining in the prototype class and continuing the team’s association with Ligier as it opens a new chapter with the LMP2 campaign.

“We have a long history in prototypes,” said Creech. “I started working on them back in the late 80’s on a Porsche 962. This is a good fit for us, especially given our relationship with Ligier that dates back to 2017. We look forward to starting our 2024 prep now.”

Further information about driver lineups will be forthcoming.

SCM thanks partner Focal One for its continued support.

Next up for SCM will be the IMSA SportsCar Weekend at Road America, August 3 – 6. The race will be broadcast live in the U.S. on USA Network and Peacock TV. International viewers can watch via IMSA.tv, with IMSA Radio also available at IMSA.com.

MORRISON, Colorado (July 16, 2023) – Troy Coughlin Jr., driver of the JEGS/White Castle Chevrolet Camaro SS Pro Stock car, earned his fourth career NHRA Pro Stock victory while capturing Team Chevy’s 375th Pro Stock victory since 1970. In his third final round appearance of the year, Troy faced off against Dallas Glenn, driver of the RAD Torque Chevrolet Camaro SS Pro Stock car for KB Titan Racing, who has five final round appearances in 10 events and three wins so far this year. This was Troy’s second win of 2023.

“We have a long way to go to November, but at Elite Motorsports, we are not going to give up for darn certain,” said Coughlin at the top end. “Mark Ingersoll, all the boys in the lounge, and everybody that works on this JEGS.com/White Castle machine had this thing flying. Our people make this possible and we love everybody.”

“What a great facility with a great family and what an exciting day to come out here and get a W. You just take it one round at a time, and we have the best people in the industry at Elite Motorsports. Everybody there just does a fantastic job, and they work together. All-for-one, one-for-all. We have excellent power, so you just take it one round at a time and stay focused.”

In Top Fuel, Team Chevy fell in the first round, with Austin Prock, driver of the Montana Brand/Rocky Mountain Twist Chevrolet Top Fuel dragster, and Brittany Force, driver of the Monster Energy/Flav-R-Pac Chevrolet Top Fuel dragster, both being eliminated by their opponents. Brittany was the No. 1 qualifier after breaking her own track record that was set in 2021.

Force faced off against J.R. Todd in Round 2 and Hight faced off against Ron Capps, with Force losing a close one and Hight losing traction mid-race.

The Chevrolet Top Fuel and Funny Car teams at John Force Racing in NHRA next head to the Pacific Northwest for the second stop on the Western Swing, with Pacific Raceways hosting the 2023 Flav-R-Pac NHRA Northwest Nationals July 21-23, 2023. Broadcast of Sunday’s eliminations will air live at 4 p.m. ET on FOX Sunday, July 23, 2023.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

Brittany Force, driver of the Monster Energy Chevrolet Top Fuel dragster for John Force Racing: “It’s heartbreaking that Bandimere Speedway is closing down and that this was the final national event. Our Monster Energy / Flav-R-Pac team came in strong, set the track record speed, and went to that No. 1 spot. We felt confident coming into race day but it just wasn’t our day. We got taken out early but we did get to enjoy the fans and watch some drag racing together as a team. It’s the beginning of our Western Swing, we go to three right in a row so there’s two more in it, which we love. So luckily for us, we get right back to it in just a couple of days.”

Austin Prock, driver of the Montana Brands/Rocky Mountain Twist Chevrolet Top Fuel dragster for John Force Racing: “Definitely not the way this Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist team wanted or thought this morning was going to go,” Prock said. “We’re disappointed, adds to the sting that it’s the last one here on the Mountain. Going to miss Bandimere Speedway but for now, our team has to put this weekend behind us and move on to Seattle and hopefully get the job done for Frank Tiegs at his Flav-R-Pac race.”

Robert Hight, driver of the Cornwell Quality Tools/AAA Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car for John Force Racing: Not the way this Cornwell team wanted to say goodbye to Bandimere Speedway, but fans made it special. Selling this place out, packing the grandstands, that was something to see. It’s a testament to what the Bandimere family built here,” Hight said. “Wish we could have had a better last memory here, but we’ve had some good ones. Now it’s time to put our heads down and get focused for Seattle.”

John Force, driver of the PEAK Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car for John Force Racing: “I’ve said it’s not over until Bandimere says it’s over. But if this really is the last race at Bandimere Speedway, the fans really showed them how much this place means. The Bandimere family built a wonderful facility here on God’s Mountain. All the racers love this place. The next place where I hope we end up, I can’t wait and I just want to wish the best of luck. I’m disappointed we couldn’t get his PEAK Chevy in the winner’s circle, that we didn’t do better but I know we’ve got to get ready for the rest of the Western Swing, Seattle is next, the Flav-R-Pac Northwest Nationals, looking forward to it.”

DOUG KALITTA, Mac Tools Toyota Top Fuel Dragster, Kalitta Motorsports

Final Result: Finalist

How are you feeling after the final round?

“Yeah, that is kind of how we left it. We’ve got a lot of momentum going into Seattle, but getting to the final was a big deal for us. We were just a little short on getting the win, but really proud of my guys. It was a hell of an effort that they put in. We had a lot of support from our Toyota friends and Mac Tools. It was disappointing a little bit, because it was the last race in Denver and we were hoping to get the win, but it’s all good. We went to the final and were contending for the win. We will keep digging and making progress.”

ALEXIS DEJORIA, Bandero Tequila Toyota GR Supra Funny Car, DC Motorsports

Final Result: Finalist

How was your race?

“That was a hard loss right there. Going up against (Matt) Hagan, it was a rematch from two years ago. I really wanted that trophy for the guys and myself and our whole team. It is the last trophy here at Bandimere, so I guess it is quite fitting for the Dodge team to get it, but that’s not why we came here. We came here to win, and we were gunning all weekend. We had some wild rides, but that Toyota 200th win is still on the table, and we are also a part of the Mission Foods 2Fast2Tasty for the next race. This was our third final of the year, and there are many races left. It’s tough. You go up there and you try to do your best. I almost redlit – I almost double-stepped and redlit and caught myself – and just ended up having a bad light. We had a hurt piston early on, and then pan pressure got a little too high at the top end and it shut it off. Our incrementals were better than Hagan’s most of the run. That’s hard, but we will be grateful for all of the runs we got to run out here. All of the times we got to run out here and all of the races we had. Working with the Bandimeres, just has been really awesome. I’m going to miss this race track. I’m going to miss going up and hiking Red Rocks every morning before the races. I’m going to miss all of these fans out here. Hopefully, they do end up building another track, who knows if that is going to happen, but I’m really grateful for the time that we’ve had.”
