Palou drives away from field at Indy

INDIANAPOLIS — With eight laps to go, it was Alex Palou’s race to lose.

The 2021 NTT IndyCar Series champion led 52 of the 85 laps to win the GMR Indy Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“We knew we had a fast car honestly since practice, since we were all off the trailers,” he said. “The car was really, really good. I was comfortable. We missed a little bit on pole, yesterday, but we knew we had a fast car.”

It’s his fifth career IndyCar victory and first since the season-finale at Laguna Seca in 2022.

“Yeah, every win is special, honestly,” he said. “We’ve been close here. We had little bit of bad luck. I know in ’21 we had a failure when we were going for the fight for the win at the end. It was the first race that everything came perfectly, the strategy, the tires, the speed of the car, myself obviously.

“Super proud. It’s a special place. You can feel that in the car just with the fans that we had already since practice one. There’s something about this place obviously. Even if it’s not the big one, it’s still special.

“So super proud of the first win of the season, first win with the American Legion, as well, and first win at the IMS. Couldn’t be better.”

Pato O’Ward had fresh red tires, but couldn’t overcome a 10-second gap before he reached his tires’ crossover lap and finished runner-up, 16 seconds behind.

“Super stoked for the team,” he said. “We put three cars in the top-five. Fricking hard to do in this series with how competitive it is. Just stoked for everybody in the organization, for our 5 crew.

“We made our strategy really work, right? I just think today Palou and Ganassi were very, very strong, so we couldn’t quite get them there in the end.

“Historically this hasn’t been the best of tracks for us. So this is awesome to see just the massive step forward we’ve taken here in race pace. Super happy to see that.

“Rolling with some great momentum into our Super Bowl.”

Alexander Rossi rounded out the podium, after he overtook Christian Lundgaard into Turn 7 with 10 to go.

“Like Pato said, to get three cars in the top-five is near on impossible these days,” he said. “Arrow McLaren has done a phenomenal job all year. You can’t talk about how challenging it is to add a car in the off-season. They’ve done it with relative apparent ease. There’s a lot of work behind the scenes.

“Really proud to get the first podium for the team, the first one as part of Team Chevy. It was a good day. We’ve had a really strong pace on Sundays, we just haven’t gotten the results that we feel like we deserve. We’re missing a little bit on Saturdays.

“The pieces are coming together. I’ve got an awesome team, awesome teammates around me.”

Pole sitter Christian Lundgaard and Felix Rosenqvist rounded out the top-five.

Scott Dixon, Josef Newgarden, Marcus Ericsson, Colton Herta and Graham Rahal rounded out the top-10.

Lundgaard led the field to green at 3:46 p.m. ET. He and Palou touched in Turn 1, but Palou overtook him in Turn 13 to lead the first lap.

“We knew starting on the alternates we needed to go hard and try and get the lead as fast as possible,” Palou said. “I think the alternates had two, three laps that they were a lot better. Afterwards, you kind of got stuck behind.

“I tried in Turn 1. He went really aggressive. It was right, it was perfect what he did, but yeah, I wanted it to be something easier (smiling). We were able to get it on the last corner. That was good.”

Rahal contacted someone also, and dropped through the field. On Lap 7, Will Power drove Kyle Kirkwood wide into Turn 1. Entering Turn 2, Kirkwood turned him. IndyCar gave him an avoidable contact penalty and he dropped seven spots, behind Power.

By Lap 15, Palou hit the crossover point on his red tires and Lundgaard cut the gap by over a second in three laps. Palou pitted from the lead on Lap 18. Lundgaard stayed out for two laps, before changing over to reds on Lap 20. Palou cycled ahead, but Lundgaard ran him down and overtook him down Hulman Boulevard on Lap 24.

Meanwhile, Rahal inherited the lead, thanks to multiple stops from his Lap 1 hit. By Lap 30, however, Lundgaard chewed half a second a lap into his lead, and Rahal pitted from the lead on Lap 31.

Lundgaard’s reds hit their crossover lap on Lap 37. After that, Palou on blacks ate into his lead and overtook him into Turn 1 for the lead on Lap 42. Before he crossed the start/finish line, Lundgaard pitted from second for used reds. Meanwhile, Palou followed suit on Lap 43, but took sticker blacks.

Lundgaard pitted from third on Lap 60 for sticker blacks. Palou responded a lap later, but took used blacks. He cycled out ahead of Lundgaard, on new blacks, and O’Ward, on fresh reds.

This set up the run to the finish.

What else happened

Entering Turn 7 on Lap 2, Romain Grosjean clipped David Malukas, who spun into Sting Ray Robb.

That was the only caution of the race.

Nuts and bolts

The race lasted one hour, 47 minutes and 57 seconds, at an average speed of 115.234 mph. There were 12 lead changes among eight different drivers, and one caution for three laps.

Palou kicks off the Month of May with a six-point lead over O’Ward.

CORVETTE RACING AT LAGUNA SECA: Closer to the Front

MONTEREY, Calif. (May 13, 2023) – Corvette Racing will roll off from the fifth spot in the GTD PRO field for Sunday’s MOTUL Course de Monterey – its 25th consecutive start at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

Jordan Taylor set a lap of 1:24.907 (94.889 mph) in Saturday’s 15-minute qualifying session for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. He will start Sunday’s race behind the wheel of the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R that he shares with Antonio Garcia.

Taylor was seventh-fastest among all GTD cars but only four-tenths of a second off the pole time. Compare that to being more than a second off the pace in qualifying a year ago, and there is reason to be optimistic heading into Sunday’s race, which airs live at 3 p.m. ET on NBC.

A year ago, the Corvette qualified in the same position but an early strategy call to take fresh tires early helped gain track position and allowed Garcia and Taylor to gain a spot to fourth at the finish. A year on with a notebook full of car, tire and track data should help the Corvette program move further up the order.

This is the 25th straight year that Corvette Racing has visited the 2.238-mile, 11-turn Laguna Seca circuit. The track is one of two where the program has raced in each of its previous 24 years – Sebring is the other – with Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta joining the list at the end of the season.

This weekend also marks another important milestone: Garcia will become the first driver in the WeatherTech Championship to make 100 starts in the series since the start of the post-merger era in 2014 when the American Le Mans Series and GRAND-AM joined together for one American sports car championship.

Since that time, Garcia has won 20 races – including in 2014 at Laguna Seca – and four championships… all with Corvette Racing.

DARLINGTON, S.C. (May 13, 2023) – John Hunter Nemechek claimed a fifth-place result in Saturday afternoon’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race Darlington Raceway. Nemechek was leading when the white flag was displayed, but was battling with eventual race-winner Kyle Larson off of turn four when Nemechek spun to the inside wall and ultimately finished fifth. Sam Hunt Racing GR Supras of Kaz Grala (ninth) and Corey Heim (10th) earned the first pair of top-10 finishes for the organization.

“We had a really fast GR Supra all day. The pit crew was awesome, executed well on pit road all day. The strategy was great. Had a really fast race car and battling with one of the best in the sport in my opinion, Kyle Larson. It was a really great day. We will continue to work hard and continue to bring fast cars to the race track. Just disappointed a little bit from the standpoint of how that ended up there. Overall, we gave it a shot and still had a shot to win off of turn four. Fast car, top-five to show for it when it probably should have been victory lane or second. “A bit of a slow start for us today, but we got our Fire Department Coffee Supra sorted out after the first stage and got it pretty good moving forward. We just had a solid day, did what we needed to do, executed well just like we did at Dover all day. We made the most of it. Proud of everybody at Sam Hunt Racing. This was a fun first time at Darlington. This place is wild and I can’t wait to come back to this place later on.”

“I think we had an up and down day. We avoided a lot of carnage there in the early portion of the race. We just kind of played in conservative. I feel like this 24 group just needed kind of a base hit today. I feel like we had the potential to run better than we did, but we kind of jumped the fence early on and got caught up in a couple things. Then we made it back at the end there. Nannini Holds Off Foster at IMS for First Career Victory

INDIANAPOLIS (Saturday, May 13, 2023) – Matteo Nannini drove to his first career INDY NXT by Firestone victory, holding off fellow series rookie Louis Foster in a compelling duel Saturday on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

Nannini, from Italy, drove his No. 75 Juncos Hollinger Racing car from the pole to the victory by .3909 of a second over the No. 26 Copart/USF Pro Championship car of Foster, fielded by Andretti Autosport. Nannini led all 35 laps of the INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix despite unyielding pressure from Foster over the last quarter of the race.

“I really wanted this win, mainly for the team,” Nannini said. “We didn’t start the championship where we really wanted, but I know we have the car to do it, the crew to do it. So, I would have been really pissed if I would not have been the winner of this race.”

Kyffin Simpson finished a lonely third in the No. 21 HMD Motorsports with CGR machine, 9.8065 seconds behind winner Nannini on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course.

This was the first INDY NXT by Firestone victory for Juncos Hollinger Racing since September 2019, when current NTT INDYCAR SERIES standout Rinus VeeKay swept the season-ending doubleheader at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. That also was the last INDY NXT by Firestone win for a team other than HMD Motorsports or Andretti Autosport.

Nannini jumped from 17th to fourth in the standings for INDYCAR’s development series with the win.

Hunter McElrea finished fourth in the No. 27 Smart Motors car fielded by Andretti Autosport. Championship leader Christian Rasmussen rounded out the top five in the No. 6 HMD Motorsports with DCR machine after a spirited duel for position with McElrea for much of the second half of the race.

Nannini controlled the race from the start, building a lead of one second after the first green-flag lap and padding that margin to 1.580 seconds by Lap 7.

But Foster stayed in touch, deftly managing his Firestone tires and push-to-pass time for a drive toward the front. With 10 laps to go, Foster closed the gap to within three-tenths of a second.

“I just tried to manage the car to the end of the race,” Nannini said. “I had a little issue with the braking. It was losing (time) quite a bit, but here we are. So happy for the result.”

Foster had two good looks at trying to pass Nannini at the end of the back straightaway entering Turn 7, on Lap 33 and the final lap, but couldn’t pull close enough to make a potentially winning pass stick. Nannini had exhausted his push-to-pass before the final lap, with Foster having five seconds remaining on the final trip around the circuit.

“I was pretty convinced we could get it done there, but with the car and the tires coming off (wearing), it’s unfortunate, really,” British driver Foster said. “Our last two weekends haven’t gone particularly well, so this weekend it was all about points, and we got that. Hopefully we can build on this from here in Detroit.”

The next INDY NXT by Firestone event is a doubleheader June 3-4 at the Detroit Grand Prix on the streets of the Motor City.

Truex snares pole for Darlington Throwback Cup Series main event

Martin Truex Jr. topped qualifying Saturday morning with a lap of 169.409 mph at Darlington Raceway in his Joe Gibbs Racing No. 19 Toyota and will lead the Cup Series field to green for Sunday’s Goodyear 400.  It’s his first Busch Light Pole Award at Darlington, his first this season and the 21st of his career.

Truex described the pole-winning run as a team effort.

“It’s, I think, just a matter of everything coming together with your team,” he said. “Our cars are fast, we’re executing and we’re making good decisions. Things are coming together lately and it feels like momentum but it’s really just things coming together. It takes a lot to be running good in this series at this level consistently.”

Bubba Wallace will join Truex on the front row in his 23XI Racing Toyota after posting a 169.339 mph lap while Chevrolet drivers Ricky Stenhouse Jr., William Byron and Ross Chastain completed the top five fastest drivers in qualifying followed by Daniel Suárez, Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, Tyler Reddick and Brad Keselowski. Keselowski was the lone Ford in the top 10.

Alan On Friday’s Race at Darlington Raceway: “We had a rocky start to our day but were able to make big gains on it throughout the day. I’m proud of Wally Rogers and this AUTOParkit team for giving me something to work with at the end of the race. It’s an unfortunate ending with the spin and hate that it ended like that after fighting to get back on the lead lap.”

Race Recap: The track “Too Tough to Tame” lived up to its name Friday night for Lawless Alan. From his 30th-place starting position, Alan went a lap-down midway through the event and was able to fight back for the free pass in Stage Three. Unfortunately, a spin with just 20 laps to go halted Alan’s climb through the field and ended his day.

Alan would finish 30th in the Buckle Up South Carolina 200 and remain in 26th in the driver’s championship standings.

Hocevar on Friday’s Race at Darlington Raceway: “It was clear that we had the fastest truck tonight, we just had too many mistakes. I think if the pit-gun malfunction didn’t happen, we’d be in a different place right now. It was so cool to wheel this Worldwide Express Dale Jarrett throwback scheme at this place. It’s a track I have loads on confidence at and I’m glad to give them a good run.”

Race Recap: Carson Hocevar had an up and down day in his No. 42 Worldwide Express Chevrolet Silverado. From working his way into the top-ten late in the first stage, to getting spun around by another competitor with 34 laps to go, Hocevar was on a mission Friday night.

Although he qualified 18th, Hocevar quickly made his way into the top-ten by lap 19 and continued to climb throughout the 45-lap stage. The caution-free Stage One would allow Hocevar to pass a few more cars and collect stage points with a 6th-place finish in the first stage.

The second stage was much-like the first; caution-free. Hocevar was able to sneak into the top-five during this stage and finish 4th in the segment– collecting much-needed stage points.

A pit-gun malfunction under the pit stop during the stage break forced the No. 42 team to start mid-pack to begin the third and final stage. Hocevar was able to weave his way through the field until another competitor spun him around with 34 laps to go. Fortunately for the Michigan-driver, Hocevar was able to rally and make passes in the final run to collect another top-five and move up to 12th in the driver’s championship standings.

Race Recap: Friday night was an off-night for the No. 41 Worldwide Express Silverado with Ross Chastain. Although he was the fastest of the Niece Motorsports trucks in qualifying, Chastain ran steady inside the top-15 for most of the night.

At times, Chastain was able to ride in the top-ten but was never able to stay there for long periods of time. The watermelon farmer finished 15th and 12th in Stage One and Stage Two, respectively.

The 147-lap race on Friday night was tame for the most-part. But, the final stage is where the action picked up and Chastain was able to avoid carnage to keep his machine in one piece. In the end, Chastain would finish 13th and advance the No. 41 to 14th in the owner’s championship standings.

Five Camaro ZL1’s Take Top-10 Starting Spots at Darlington Raceway

· At the conclusion of the NASCAR Cup Series practice session at Darlington Raceway, Chevrolet drivers took the top-three spots on the final speed chart, led by Chase Elliott and the No. 9 Llumar Throwback Camaro ZL1 team, clocking-in a fastest lap of 29.231 second, at 168.232 mph.

· Defending Darlington Raceway NASCAR Cup Series winner, Erik Jones, was second-fastest in his No. 43 Allegiant Camaro ZL1, followed by Elliott’s teammate William Byron, No. 24 Axalta Throwback Camaro ZL1, in the third position.

· Five Chevrolet drivers advanced to the final round of qualifying to take a top-10 starting position in tomorrow’s Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway led by the 2023 Daytona 500 Champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr., qualifying his No. 47 Kroger / Country Crock Camaro ZL1 in the third position.

Is momentum a real thing in racing?

“It’s so hard to know, but it feels that way. I just think it’s a matter of everything coming together with your team. Our cars are fast, we’re executing and things are coming together lately and it feels like momentum, but it’s just things coming together. It’s a lot, it take a lot to be running good in this series at this level consistently and I think when all those things comes together, it’s momentum. But it’s also a lot coming together behind the scenes. It’s not just some crazy thing that falls out of the sky.”

Do you feel that you are on a good string of race tracks right now?

“I felt good a few weeks ago about that, knowing that we had some good tracks coming up. I think the first six or seven races of the year maybe, things were a little up and down, but we could see that we had speed and see what we were needing to do and what we were capable of. Went to Richmond and felt like we probably should have won there and ran ourselves out of tires. Then it was nice to just get it out of the way and get the win at Dover and then last week at Kansas, felt like we had a shot to win again and had some damage mid-race that hampered that. Overall, just qualifying well and we have speed everywhere we’ve been lately at all different racetracks. The team just across the board is doing a good job and it’s fun to come to the racetrack and be fast.”

How has this new race car changed how you race at Darlington?

“Not really, I think it’s really, really similar to what we’ve done in the past through different cars and throughout the year since basically all the way back to the repave, but similar. Just this car is a bit more difficult. It’s more difficult to run fast behind a car and to run faster than the guy in front of your specifically if they’re running the same line. So it’s very challenging, but it’s really the same thing. You have to be patient and hope they’re running somewhere different than you are which typically isn’t the case. If you’re able to move around a little bit, it’s helpful.”
