“Talladega is pretty close to my hometown in Atlanta, it’s only about an hour-and-a-half or two hour drive, so it’s one of the close to home races that I get to have and I’m excited about that. Excited to have HYTE on our Toyota Tundra this weekend. I think it’ll be a good race, it’s the first track that I won an ARCA race at, so that’s another thing that makes it exciting for me. We’re just going to be there at the end and hopefully have a shot to win it.”

The superspeedways have been one of our strong suits at SHR this year and I’m confident our HaasTooling.com Ford guys are bringing us a fast Mustang for this race. These are races where you can’t control a whole lot and you have to hope for the best, especially during the playoffs when guys are going all out for stage points and then at the end of the race. You have to race your race the best you can to put yourself in a good position. It can be a pretty stressful race, but I guess all of the races can be stressful if you let them.”

Your first two Cup Series races at Talladega were potentially strong runs during your Rookie of the Year campaign in 2020. Talk about that and how you seemed to get comfortable there from the get-go.

“We had strong runs and we did it without any practice or qualifying, so that was definitely an adventure. Having no practice was definitely a concern because you want as much practice as you can get to just feel things out and see what’s working and what’s not working. But we figured it out pretty quickly in the race, as it turned out. We had fast Ford Mustangs both times there last year. I think we had top-five cars at both races, and we were able to race our way to the front both times. But we ran out of fuel at the end of the June race, and ended up getting caught up in a big wreck a little past halfway in the October race. I’m optimistic we’ll bring a fast HaasTooling.com Mustang again this weekend.”

● Chase Briscoe and the No. 14 Ford Mustang team for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) gear up for the final superspeedway race of the season at 2.66-mile Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. In Briscoe’s first NASCAR Cup Series start at Talladega, he led his first lap in Cup Series competition and finished the 188-lap race in the 11th position – his best finish over the first 10 events of the season. He’s now earned nine top-15 finishes since that first trip, the most recent at 14th-place result coming last weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

● The 14th-place finish at Las Vegas extended Briscoe’s lead in the NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year standings to 268 points with just six races remaining. He has been the highest-finishing rookie driver in 26 of 30 events. With Rookie of the Year honors in the Truck Series (2017) and Xfinity Series (2019), Briscoe is looking to join Erik Jones and William Byron as only the third driver in history to claim the title in all three of NASCAR’s national touring series.

Your first race at Talladega in April was really the first top-15 for the No. 14 team. How are you feeling about heading back there with a little more experience under your belt?

“I’m excited, and I don’t think that’s something you hear a lot when people talk about superspeedways. I love this type of racing and, now that I am more comfortable in the car and with the team and how they work, I think we’ve got a good shot to go finish up front. We’ve made progress at every other track this year and I think we can do the same. But there’s always that unknown factor at these superspeedway races. Anything can happen and it will. You’ve got guys who are trying to make the next round of the playoffs before we get to the Roval and others that are just going for a win knowing these are the kinds of races where you can go from midpack to the front if you can find the right line and drafting group.”

When drafting in Talladega, do you consider who is in the Playoffs and who is not?

“That’s a good question. I don’t know. I think honestly at the end of the day, you hope you are running at the finish and you are going to do whatever is best for you, so I don’t know if you are going to make a move necessarily on who’s around you if they are in the Playoffs or not, you are going to do whatever is in your best interest to get you the best result you can get.”

How does the ROVAL compared to other road courses built in the infield of racetracks?

“I think the biggest challenge with the ROVAL is that you have to somewhat setup your car to run on the oval, especially turns three and four of the oval. It kind of keeps you from setting up the car the way you want to for the infield, so it just makes it a big challenge. That’s the biggest thing. It always seems like the infield there is pretty bumpy. It’s pretty narrow. There is a lot of undulations up and down. The car’s never in the racetrack very good because the tires are hard for the oval. It’s just a big compromise. I think that’s the biggest thing. Really hard to get your car working right and it’s a real challenge to get around there.”

What is your relationship with Talladega?

“It’s not been very good lately. We’ve kind of been in bad relationship these last couple of years. I don’t know. I enjoy going there. I enjoy racing there. It just been a real challenge to get to the finish, so hopefully, this time around we will have a little bit better luck. Just been caught up in a lot of accidents. Nowhere to hide there. It’s just not been that good to us. We haven’t finished a speedway race this year, so I guess the odds are in our favor to finish this one, hopefully. We need it. We need a good finish, so hopefully we will get it done.”

Does your calm demeanor help you at Talladega and in the Playoffs?

“I think it has definitely benefitted me over the years to kind of stay out of trouble and just focus on my own deal and focus with our team together. There’s a lot of things to think about and worry about that you don’t need to really get caught up in everybody’s business, so I guess, yeah, I think we’ve done a pretty good job at that. Just doing our own deal, and not paying attention to others. At the end of the day, the Playoffs are tough, and we have a strong team, so hopefully, we can continue to get strong finishes and so far, we have been really consistent in the Playoffs, and hopefully we can continue that. Talladega is certainly a big question mark, but I think if we can come out of there with a solid day, we will be in pretty good shape heading to the ROVAL.”

What did you learn from the new package at Daytona that you can use at Talladega?

“Really the only difference was the runs weren’t quite as dramatic. The closing rate wasn’t quite as dramatic as it has been in the past. Speeds are down just slightly, and I think that all your moves are just a little more critical. It’s a little bit more difficult to get runs, and a little more difficult to finish runs. We will see what we have. I felt pretty good about our car at Daytona speed wise. I thought we had good speed. We were in pretty good shape until we got caught up. It’s not really that drastically different than we were before.”

Is all of the inspection failures part of strategy or luck of the draw?

“Definitely luck of the draw. We definitely don’t ever plan on those things happening. It’s just one of those things that happens. The other day I talked to James (Small, crew chief) and he said they were all clear through the first time and they were letting the car down and something popped through on the scan about the spoiler, so they went around to fix that and then the right rear tow was off by just the slightest margin. Just kind of luck of the draw, sometimes it just works out that way. It seems like if you have an issue the first time through, you have a second issue the second time through. We definitely don’t plan on that happening. Your number just pops up sometimes.”

What is your confidence level going into Talladega?

“I wouldn’t say I’m 100% confident that we will go there and finish the race. I think if you say that, you are guessing, but I’m confident in our team and what we can do. Been able to win there in Xfinity, not in Cup obviously, so hopefully we can get our first win. We go to the racetrack to win. It doesn’t matter what the track is. I think that is just the way it is. I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully, we can have a good run.”

If you could change the Playoff schedule, would you remove Talladega?

“There’s no chance that I’ll ever get to make the schedule or say where we will go, so it’s not really worth talking about but I don’t know. It is what it is. It’s on the schedule. We are going there this weekend and we’ve got to do a good job.”

What are you doing right in the Playoffs so far?

“Executing. We’ve been consistent. We’ve had fast racecars, so everything really. At the end of the day, it’s all about where you finish. We’ve had some good runs. Winning Richmond was good. Pit crew has been on it, so just overall, we’ve been well-rounded, and we’ve had good speed so hopefully, we can continue to do that.”

What has led to the turnaround in the results?

“I think that it’s just good planning, good execution. We all understand when the Playoffs start you’ve got to put all of your best stuff together. I think that’s just what James (Small, crew chief) and the guys were able to do. We learned a lot throughout the summer – things we were good at and things we needed to work on. Overall, we felt like we had good racecars, good speed. We just weren’t doing all of the little things right. You can’t speed on pit road and do things like that. Just try to clean everything up and be consistent is what we’ve been able to do.”

With your points advantage, how do you balance going for stage points while not getting in an accident?

“That’s the difficult thing. You never really know where the right place to be. A lot of it depends on how the race goes. We sit pit strategies come into play so much now at the speedways with the manufacturers getting together, pitting together and trying to get off sequence and kind of get in a line by themselves. A lot of it is just going to be how strategy works out. Hopefully, we have enough speed that we can stay up towards the front of the pack. That’s the safest place to be usually. We will see if we can do that and work together with our Toyota teammates. One of the biggest challenges for us has been lack of numbers. We have the least amount of cars of all of the manufacturers. Sometimes it makes it tough, but sometimes it’s an advantage. We just have to see how it all plays out and just make the right decisions and stay near the front if we can do it.”

How much does your prep with your spotter change for this race?

“The communication with the spotter is definitely the most important at the speedways. 550 tracks have kind of migrated that way as well, but still not as important as Talladega and Daytona. Talladega is always a challenge because it’s typically always three-wide and sometimes four, so there is just a lot of information that your spotter is giving you to just give you the best picture of what is going on around you because you can’t see. You can only see maybe one or two cars behind you, so it’s hard to know what’s going on without those guys telling you.”

A breakthrough win at ‘Dega could turn his season completely around, and don’t be surprised if it happens, as Smith has visited victory lane here with the ARCA Menards Series.

CONCORD, N.C. (Sept. 28, 2021) – Alongside dozens of pink shirt-wearing breast cancer survivors, NASCAR drivers Kurt Busch and Daniel Hemric joined officials from Charlotte Motor Speedway and Blue Cross NC in painting Charlotte Motor Speedway’s pit wall pink on Tuesday.

The speedway’s eighth Paint Pit Wall Pink event has become an annual tradition to celebrate survivors, provide hope for those battling breast cancer and paint the 1,500-foot pink pit road wall to raise awareness of the importance of early detection.

Charlotte Motor Speedway Executive Vice President and General Manager Greg Walter and Performance Racing Network’s Lenny Batycki joined the survivors in painting the wall.

The event featured a special unveil of the pink Toyota Camry pace car for the Drive for the Cure 250 presented by Blue Cross NC race on Oct. 9. The car, is covered in more than 600 digital signatures of breast cancer survivors and those currently battling, serves as a reminder that no one fights alone.

During the event, Hemric, whose family has been directly impacted by breast cancer, presented a green flag to Jennifer Grady, a breast cancer survivor and senior strategic policy consultant for Blue Cross NC who shared her story during Tuesday’s event.

“I am grateful that my cancer was detected early on to afford me more treatment options, because I know that isn’t always everyone’s story,” Grady said. “Early detection has significant impact on breast cancer treatment and outcomes, and I encourage every woman to commit to annual testing.”

Additionally, Busch shared that he has rallied drivers in the Cup Series to run pink window nets during the Oct. 10 Bank of America ROVAL™ 400, to further raise awareness as part of an initiative called “Window for Hope.” The idea came to the Chip Ganassi Racing driver after he received a letter from a fan who mother was battling breast cancer asking if Busch could run a pink window net to show support for those battling.

“I’m like, ‘That sounds like a brilliant idea; let me go to work,” Busch said. “A small idea from a race fan will now have every NASCAR car at the ROVAL – at this year’s (Cup) race – will have a pink window net. We’re just trying to create more awareness of breast cancer, support survivors and everyone going through the process.”

Cheryl Parquet, Blue Cross NC’s director of community development and marketing activation, said that Paint the Wall Pink is inspiring each year.

“We’re grateful for partners like Charlotte Motor Speedway who share our passion for honoring survivors and increasing breast cancer awareness and early detection,” said Parquet. “The pink canvas ribbons our volunteers have painted are a reminder that our patients and survivors are not alone. In the face of breast cancer, we stand together.”

Wright Targets Championship Title at Sebring Doubleheader

SEBRING, Fla., (September 28, 2021) — For the first time since 2009, SRO America will return to Sebring International Raceway this weekend for the penultimate rounds of the Fanatec GT World Challenge America. Wright Motorsports leads the Pro/Am team championship by 20 points, and after a podium finish at Watkins Glen International last month, drivers Jan Heylen and Fred Poordad are expected to be strong contenders to return to Victory Circle in this weekend’s 90-minute doubleheaders. The duo currently leads in the driver point standings by 58 points and could win their respective championship this weekend.

“Our GT World Challenge America group has had a near-perfect season this year,” said Team Owner John Wright. “Everyone at the shop, the track, and behind the wheel has executed flawlessly to keep us at the top of the standings. It goes to show the quality of our program and the people in it. I feel confident that we’ll be strong here again at Sebring.”

The team’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and Michelin Pilot Challenge efforts competed at the legendary Florida circuit in March, earning a pair of second-place finishes. The team’s Porsche 911 GT3 R will be well suited for the 3.74-mile, 17-turn circuit. Wright Motorsports’ years of previous experience at Sebring International Raceway will give the team a running start, though the time of year may bring different track conditions than in the spring.

Seventeen cars will compete in the Florida doubleheader, ten of which will race in the Pro/Am class. The event will open with two test sessions on Thursday, September 30, followed by two practice sessions on Friday. After a brief qualifying session in the morning, the field will take the green flag for race one on Saturday, October 2 at 1:15 PM Eastern. Race two will commence the following afternoon at the same time, and both races will air live on youtube.com/GTWorld.

Sebring should be a great event. We have never raced this car there and look forward to a fun weekend. That track has so much history and is so bumpy and fast that it should provide some great racing opportunities. It may be the last race in warm weather for a while too, so we will enjoy the Florida sun!

What’s not to love about Sebring? This place is an awesome track with lots of character and lot of places to overtake. I’m really looking forward to go to Sebring with SRO in the Porsche GT3 R. Our only goal for the weekend is to try and win the championship before heading to Indy for the 8 Hour.

Hailie Deegan, No. 1 Monster Ford F-150

  • Deegan is making her 21st career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) start on Saturday afternoon at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.
  • The Ford driver is making her second career NCWTS superspeedway start. Earlier this year in February at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, Deegan made her first superspeedway start from ninth and ran in the top-10, but finished 24th after making contact with the wall and damaging her F-150.
  • In last weekend’s event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the young driver started 17th in the Craftsman F-150. Deegan had a strong run for most of the event, but late in the race she received contact from a spinning truck and was forced to retire her truck and finish 31st.
  • In June of 2020, Deegan made an ARCA Menards Series start at the Alabama superspeedway. She started third and finished seventh in the 75-lap event.
  • Veteran crew chief Mike Hillman Jr. has called 12 NCWTS events at Talladega. The New York native has earned three wins — 2007 and 2008 with Todd Bodine, 2020 with Raphael Lessard — and three pole awards, along with seven top-five and eight top-10 finishes at the 2.66-mile venue.

Tanner Gray, No. 15 Ford Performance F-150

  • Gray makes his 20th start of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season and 46th of his career on Saturday afternoon.
  • At Las Vegas Motor Speedway last Friday night, the 22-year-old driver battled inside the top-10 for most of the race and was running as high as second late in the final stage. After a lap 117 caution, he restarted 10th and suffered a flat tire that trapped him two laps down and relegated him to a 23rd-place finish.
  • Gray has two previous starts the 2.66-mile superspeedway – one with the NCWTS and one with the ARCA Menards Series. In the truck race last season, he was involved in a multi-truck crash and finished 29th.
  • Drivetrain issues derailed Gray’s one and only attempt at a superspeedway this season back at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February before turning a single lap.
  • Marcus Richmond has called 12 career races at Talladega with two wins, three top-fives and four top-10s. Both wins came with Timothy Peters in back-to-back visits to the track in 2014 and 2015.
