COTA RUNNER-UP THWAITS CLOSING IN ON XGT CHAMPIONSHIP

Austin, TEXAS – November 11, 2020 – Another terrific result for Ken Thwaits in the XGT Class of the 2020 Trans Am presented by Pirelli season means that the Tennessee based driver is now closing in on the inaugural XtremeGT Class Championship. His 27 point haul for finishing runner up on Sunday means he has now amassed 218 points in his quest for the title, 68 ahead of Erich Joiner, his nearest rival.

Round 7 of the rearranged season took place at the Formula One grade Circuit of The Americas just outside of Austin, Texas and it saw several newcomers to the budding XGT field. Hence the weekend was far from plain sailing for Ken, who benefitted from the late retirements of two of his competitors. Dan Knox, driving an AMG GT3 Mercedes and competing in the class for the first time, was forced into the pits on lap 20, promoting Ken to the podium and tenth overall from 24 starters. Then on lap 23, Ken moved up another spot when Justin Oakes lost control of his Chevrolet Corvette at Turn 19.

Ken is nothing if not honest and realistic when he spoke to us after the race about traffic issues on the track, “It was hot and we didn’t really have a big split start for whatever reason. I guess they need to fix that because we were on the backmarkers of the TA Class within two laps. You’re trying to keep up with the leaders and then get stuck behind the bigger, faster cars down the straight – but they park it in the corner.”

He went on, “It is part of racing and the leaders have to go through those guys too. Kerry Hitt and myself were racing each other even though we’re not the same class and it was fun.”

About the result Ken added, “Hey, we hung around consistently and we came in second. That’s the first thing. You’ve got to start the race and then you’ve got to finish the race! We were behind all weekend. We were not fast all weekend, but we’ll take second place points towards the Championship.”

Ken Thwaits’ No. 5 Audi R8 LMS Ultra posted 2:14:362 in the second testing session. He improved that to 2:12:735 and an impressive P8 overall in official practice, which proved to be his fastest lap of the weekend, as a lack of grip – something noted by other drivers too – prevented him from going quicker in qualifying. A fastest lap in the race for Ken of 2:16:863 only tells half the story, as the Audi is famed for its durability and it was that combined with Ken’s smooth driving that saw him take another significant step towards the title.

Ken also enjoyed a few test laps in the Pancho Weaver built TA Class Dodge Challenger driven to victory in the race by Boris Said. Ken’s comments on the added experience at COTA were ecstatic, “I’ve been joking with Pancho for ages saying, “Where’s my car?” Yesterday he said, “I’ve got your car here – do you want to drive it?” I told him, “heck yes!”

Ken raved about the interior finish, the insulation and above all the brakes on the phenomenal TA muscle car but he added, “I was really impressed with how the box shifted and the power is amazing, but the one thing about a Trans Am car is that it’s not a nimble GT3 car at all! It’s My hat’s off to the guys that drive these things really quick. It’s a whole different ball game!”

Two Lamborghini Super Trofeos Upgrade to Am Class, Four Porsches Entered in Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA For This Week’s Event

SEBRING, Florida (November 11, 2020) – TPC Racing is bringing six cars to Sebring as part of IMSA’s season finale that includes the single-make Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama and the Lamborghini Super Trofeo championship.

Sebring’s unique schedule means that this event features a “race week” rather than a traditional race weekend. Both championships will qualify on Thursday, November 12 and race a pair of races on Friday, November 13. Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge will run a pair of 45-minute races on Friday, at 8 a.m. EST and at 2:35 p.m. EST. Lamborghini Super Trofeo runs duel 50-minute races on Friday, at 9:05 a.m. EST and 3:50 p.m. EST. All four races can be seen live at IMSA.tv.

TPC Racing’s Lamborghini Super Trofeo program continues to grow. Tom Kerr began the program in August, racing the No. 74 Lamborghini Sterling/GotVeins.com Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO in LB Cup by himself. He was joined in the last round by Scott Schmidt and Trevor Andrusko, who co-drove the No. 38 Lamborghini Sterling Lamborghini Super Trofeo EVO to a podium in LB Cup.

For Sebring, both cars move to the AM class. Schmidt and Andrusko will continue to co-drive, while Kerr picks up a co-driver in Moritz Kranz this weekend in the AM class. The 33-year-old German has been working with TPC Racing as a driver coach to Efrin Castro in the Porsche Cup, and driving in Michelin Le Mans Cup LMP 3 Championship and the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) in 2020.

Castro, Dan Hardee, Vernon McClure and Charlie Craig will carry the TPC Racing banner in IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA.

While Castro has been locked in a battle for the first 14 races of the season for the Gold Cup Championship in the No. 65 Fine Fare Supermarkets/TPC Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, championship rival Curt Swearingin will clinch the class title just by starting both races this week. Instead, Castro is focused solely on adding to his five wins during the 2020 season.

Like Castro, Hardee, McClure and Craig have been eliminated from championship contention in the Platinum Cup Masters class. McClure led twice at St. Petersburg and is hunting for his first career class win in the No. 10 Main Street Homes/TPC Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Hardee, a Vero Beach, Florida-native, is looking for a strong showing behind the wheel of the No. 69 VBar Vero Beach/Hardee Family Foundation/Michelin Wiper Blades Porsche 911 GT3 Cup at his home track.

The event week begins on Wednesday afternoon at the 17-turn, 3.74-mile circuit. The Lamborghini Super Trofeo field opens with a 40-minute practice at 3:55 p.m. EST, with Porsche GT3 Cup following with a 40-minute practice of their own at 4:50 p.m. EST. Porsche GT3 Cup practices at 8:00 a.m. EST on Thursday, and qualifies at 12:45 p.m. Lamborghini Super Trofeo practices at 11:25 a.m. EST and qualifies at 4:10 p.m. the same day. Friday’s races begin at 8 a.m. and 2:35 p.m. (Porsche GT3 Cup) and 9:05 a.m. and 3:40 p.m. (Lamborghini Super Trofeo).

TWO-TIME SOUTH BOSTON SPEEDWAY CHAMPION JOHNNY LAYNE SEES SUCCESS CONTINUE

South Boston, VA….Johnny Layne temporarily put racing aside twice in his career. His success in racing returned both times.

“I’ve been racing for about 21 years,” the Nathalie, Virginia resident pointed out.

“I took one year off way back when. Last year (2019) I set aside my racing and helped my brother (Steven Layne). He started racing in the Hornets Division. I spotted for him, worked on his car a little bit, and tried to give him a little spotlight. I also spent a lot of time with my daughter. I put racing aside a little bit. It was hard.”

Layne says once racing gets into your blood it is hard to stay away from the sport.

“Racing is just a fun habit,” he explained.

“I can’t get away from it. One way or another I am going to be somewhere racing or helping somebody.”

Layne won the South Boston Speedway Budweiser Pure Stock Division championship in both 2016 and 2017 and fell just shy of making it three titles in a row in 2018. The 2018 season was the last season Layne raced at South Boston Speedway fulltime.

While he stepped away from the sport in 2019, he still enjoyed a large degree of success.

“I raced twice and won the Fourth of July race here at South Boston Speedway,” Layne noted with a smile.

“That was the only win I really hadn’t gotten since I started racing.”

Layne had looked at returning to the sport this season, but the COVID-19 pandemic put a damper on his plans, as it did with many others.

“I was hoping we were going to get to race here this year,” Layne remarked during a break in a recent testing session at South Boston Speedway, “but with everything being what it is we’ve raced only three times, all at Orange County Speedway.”

His effort was flawless. Layne won all three of his starts at the North Carolina oval, his most recent triumph coming on October 24.

One of the interesting aspects of Layne’s success is he is driving the same Nissan 240 racecar he has driven for several years.

“I’ve been racing the same car for six or seven years now,” Layne noted.

That may change.

“I have a new car I may debut next year,” Layne pointed out.

“It’s an older model. We decided we would try to build a car and see what it does. It hasn’t been on the track yet, but I think we found some things I can do to make the car handle better and be a little faster than this one.”

Layne has not firmed up his plans for the 2021 season at this time.

“I’m not saying anything for sure,” Layne said.

“It all depends on how things work out between now and then with this pandemic. I’m not going to say we’re going to race fulltime at one track. We will probably venture around some and find the best competition here and there.

“I might come back here (to South Boston Speedway) and try to win another championship,” he added.

“It just all depends on how things work out.”

South Boston Speedway is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. for teams wishing to schedule testing sessions. The track is available for testing from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. Teams wishing to schedule a test at South Boston Speedway should contact the speedway office at 434-572-4947 at least a day ahead to schedule a test session.

“America’s Hometown Track” will kick off the 2021 season on Saturday, March 20 with twin races for the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series Late Model Stock Cars, twin races for the track’s Limited Sportsman Division and races for the Pure Stock and Hornets Divisions.

Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing Prepared to Finish the 2020 Season Strongly at Sebring International Raceway

Sebring, Fla. (November 11, 2020) – Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing will compete at Sebring International Raceway in Rounds 9 and 10 of the 2020 North America Lamborghini Super Trofeo season.

Competing with seven drivers across three classes in the final event of the 2020 season, the team will be looking to carry on the good form shown at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca where they achieved four podiums along with a first win for Sydney McKee in the LB Cup.

Drivers Stevan McAleer and Stuart Middleton of the No. 1 Prestige Performance Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo will continue to compete in the PRO class, while Ashton Harrison and Andrea Amici remain focused on achieving their first win of the season in the PRO|AM class driving the No. 25 Harrison Contracting Lamborghini Super Trofeo. William Hubbell and Eric Curran return to Wayne Taylor Racing in the PRO|AM class to drive the No. 69 Hubbell Racing LST. Sydney McKee once again pilots her No. 87 FaDa Racing Lamborghini Super Trofeo in the LB Cup Class.

The opening race of the North American Lamborghini Super Trofeo series at Sebring International Raceway will begin on Friday, November 13th at 9:05 a.m. ET, with the second race taking place later the same day at 3:40 p.m. ET. Moorespeed and Team Driver Riley Dickinson Look for Competitive Close to 2020 IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup USA by Yokohama Season at Sebring

SEBRING, Florida (November 9, 2020) – Moorespeed and team driver Riley Dickinson will close out the 2020 IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama racing season with the same competitive edge they have raced with all season in the No. 53 Moorespeed Porsche 911 GT3 Cup at this week’s season-ending doubleheader at Sebring International Raceway, November 11 – 13.

Competing in the top tier IMSA Porsche GT3 Platinum Cup division, Moorespeed and Dickinson have won three races as part of a run of 12 podium finishes in the first 14 of 16 rounds in this year’s championship.

The entire No. 53 team has battled for the Platinum Cup championship all season and arrives in Sebring second in the championship standings heading into Friday’s same-day doubleheader that brings the year to a close.

“Our plan is this week to go out there and give it 110%,” said Moorespeed President David Moore. “That’s what we do every time we go to a race. So, I expect no less from everybody on the team, and I know Riley is champing at the bit to get out there and finish the season off on a high note.”

Dickinson, 18, is completing his second season with Moorespeed and earned victories this year at Road America and on two different weekends of competition at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

“Going into this weekend, we are all looking forward to finishing out 2020 with a bang,” Dickinson said. “We have had overall a great year, the results may not have always been there, but moving forward there has been a lot for me to learn on and improve on for 2021 and onward. In the grand scheme of things, it was great for us, but it is still not over with this weekend ahead. I am looking forward to it and I am ready to get going.”

While the Platinum Cup championship is all but mathematically out of reach for Moorespeed and Dickinson, the No. 53 team will leave nothing on the table in Friday’s twin 45-minute sprints on the 3.74-mile Sebring circuit.

“We were always in the championship discussion,” Moore said. “For whatever reason, it hasn’t been our year for that, but we won races and were a contender at every event. Certain things didn’t go our way in certain races, but these things don’t come easy. Riley learned a lot and has developed a lot this year. There were some hard lessons learned too that overall will make him a stronger and better driver for the future. As long as we keep going out there and keep developing him – he is only 18 years old – he has a super bright future.”

The fact that the IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup series is even competing at Sebring this weekend is a rare silver lining in a year of COVID-19 cancellations and rescheduling. Sebring wasn’t on this year’s original Porsche GT3 Cup calendar but was added in IMSA’s extensive rescheduling after the COVID-19 shutdown in the first half of 2020. Dickinson makes his race debut on the legendary 3.74-mile road course after previously only testing at Sebring.

“The previous time I was here February of last year for a test we did before the 2019 season,” Dickinson said. “I believe it was only my first or second track outside of Texas that I went to in a Cup car. It was pretty cool to come back and relive it for a little bit, and I immediately fell back in love with it. What I grew up with in karting was unbelievably rough and bumpy, so Sebring with all of the ‘character’ – if you want to call it that – in the track is really fun for me to drive on.”

Dickinson and Moorespeed got reacquainted with Sebring last weekend when they arrived in town early for a Sunday test. If the tropical storm conditions that have settled over Florida since last weekend continue through the week, Moorespeed and Dickinson will be ready.

“We had a really good test Sunday because we had multiple conditions at the same track on the same day,” Moore said. “We had varied conditions in our first run, dry conditions in our second and full-on wet in our third. We have been here before, and I have been coming here for I don’t know how many years. It is one of my favorite places and I see it becoming one of Riley’s favorite places now too. It’s not everybody’s, but he loves it, and we saw it during the test. We were able to run our program that we needed to do even with the conditions. It actually worked out to our benefit.”

The IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup schedule gets underway with a single practice session Wednesday afternoon. Another practice session Thursday morning sets the stage for qualifying that afternoon at 12:45 p.m. EST. Friday’s doubleheader has races scheduled for 8 a.m. EST and 2:35 p.m. EST, with both doubleheaders streaming live on www.IMSA.com.

New Episode of “The Haul” Targets 2014-2018 Chevy Silverado Owners

Rob Ferriol to Co-Drive With Andrew Davis and Pierre Kaffer For Hardpoint’s First Attempt at the Historic Endurance Race

SEBRING, Florida (November 10, 2020) – Team Hardpoint and the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship’s 2020 season finale ends this weekend at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, where Andrew Davis and Pierre Kaffer will join Team Hardpoint principal and regular driver in the No. 30 GridRival/Team Hardpoint Audi R8 LMS GT3 in the GT Daytona (GTD) class for the endurance racing classic.

The green flag flies at 10:10 a.m. EST on Saturday, November 14 for the 12-hour classic on Sebring International Raceway’s 17-turn, 3.74-mile circuit. The full race can be seen live on television, on NBCSN from the green flag to 3 p.m. EST, switching to NBC from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and returning to NBCSN from 6 p.m. EST to the checkered flag. The race can also be streamed on TrackPass on the NBCSN app.

Team Hardpoint moves to Sebring coming off of a top-10 finish at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and a strong showing at its debut endurance race, Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. The Road Atlanta round ended three-hours shy of the checkered flag with a fuel pump issue, but the team was running strong throughout the race prior to the bad luck.

Team Hardpoint finished a season-best eighth at Sebring in July during the team’s second-ever start in GTD. That race was a two-hour, 40-minute sprint race with Ferriol and Spencer Pumpelly behind the wheel.

“We’re coming to Sebring with some unfinished business in our minds,” Ferriol said. “The individual pieces have all been there in the past few races, and now it’s time to put it all together so that we get the results we’ve been looking for. Sebring will be a challenge, but I think we’re up for it and this could be a special weekend for Team Hardpoint to end our first season.”

Ferriol will be joined by Kaffer and Davis for the race. Kaffer has a long history with Audi Sport and Audi Sport customer racing, including an overall win at Sebring in an Audi R8 Prototype in 2004. Kaffer has also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Nürburgring 24-hour race, and Petit LeMans in his storied race career.

Davis was with the team for Petit Le Mans, and has appeared in an Audi R8 GT3 for several years at endurance races. Davis will make his 12th appearance at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, his fifth behind the wheel of an Audi.

“I’m thrilled to have another chance to compete with Team Hardpoint,” Davis said. “I was very impressed with the performance of the team at last month’s Motul Petit LeMans. We made tremendous progress each session leading up to the race, and were on pace for a strong finish before our mechanical issue. It’s nice to be able to return to the team and work to help them finish the season on a strong note.”

The race weekend officially begins for Team Hardpoint and the WeatherTech Sports Car Championship on Thursday, November 12 at 10:05 a.m. EST for the weekend’s opening one-hour practice. The GTD class will have another hour for practice at 2:35 p.m., and again for another 90-minute “night practice” at 6:15 p.m. EST.

Saturday features a 15-minute qualifying at 10:15 a.m. EST, with the race beginning at 10:10 a.m. on Sunday.

NASCAR to celebrate 2020 Series Champions and more

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 10, 2020) – During Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race, NBC Sports announced that the 2020 NASCAR Awards Show will be broadcast on Wednesday, Nov. 18th at 8 p.m. ET on NBCSN.

The 90-minute broadcast special will celebrate and feature appearances from NASCAR’s 2020 champions in the NASCAR Cup Series – Chase Elliott, NASCAR Xfinity Series – Austin Cindric and NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series – Sheldon Creed. NBC Sports’ Kelli Stavast and Marty Snider will co-host the presentation.

The show will also feature an opening performance by award-winning musician Chris Stapleton with the television debut of his song, Arkansas, from his highly anticipated new album Starting Over, and a tribute to seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, Jimmie Johnson, who completed his final full-time season.

In addition, the show will reveal the Bill France Award of Excellence recipient, crown the 2020 Most Popular Drivers, highlight this year’s Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award finalists, honor the Sunoco Rookie of the Year in each series and recognize additional award winners.

The move to the broadcast special came after the cancelation of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Awards due to the uncertainty surrounding the Coronavirus.

Formula One unveils 2021 provisional schedule

With the 2020 racing season approximately a month away from concluding, the 2021 Formula One World Championship provisional schedule has been released with a number of Grand Prix events set to return in an expanded calendar following a one-year absence.

A total of 23 Grand Prix events in 23 nations are currently on the schedule for next season, with the season set to commence in late March and conclude in early December.

Following a one-year absence, the F1 competition is set to return to Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, Australia, for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on March 21.

Along with Australia, the Grand Prix events in China, Monaco, Azerbaijan, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Singapore, Japan, the United States of America, Mexico and Brazil are set to return in 2021.

The Grand Prix events in Austria, Hungary, United Kingdom’s Silverstone, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Russia, Bahrain/Sakhir and Abu Dhabi are also set to remain on the 2021 calendar following the 2020 season.

The Vietnamese Grand Prix, which was originally scheduled to make its debut in 2020 but was cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, has been dropped from the 2021 racing calendar and will not occur following the arrest of a key official responsible for the race due to corruption charges. Though the charges were not related to racing, the country will shift its focus on other government issues.

The following Grand Prix events that have occurred and were introduced to the 2020 schedule (Styrian, 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, Tuscan, Eifel, Portuguese, Emilia Romagna, Turkish and Sakhir) will not occur next season since they were featured to fill in as many Grand Prix events in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Grand Prix is currently scheduled to occur on April 25 at a circuit that is yet to be announced.

The 2021 F1 season will conclude at Yas Marina Circuit for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on December 5.

The release of the 2021 F1 calendar comes amid the sport’s bizarre 2020 season amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that delayed the start of the season from March to July and resulted with the schedule being revised to a total of 17 Grand Prix events, with the season set to conclude in mid-December at Yas Marina Circuit for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The 2020 season also marked the 70th anniversary of the first Formula One World Championship season, which occurred in 1950.

An F1 statement was made following the release of the 2021 schedule:

“The plans for 2021 have involved extensive dialogue with all promoters and their local and national authorities at a time of ongoing fluidity related to the global pandemic. Formula 1 and the FIA put in place robust health and safety measures to allow the revised 2020 season to restart and run effectively.”

“Our hosts for 2021 are reassured by our safe return to racing this season and confident that the plans and procedures we have in place will allow us to return to a level of normality for the 2021 season.”

“As we have said before, we expect fans to return for the 2021 season and for the calendar to look similar to the originally planned 2020 season. We will continue to work closely with our promoters and partners and look forward to the start of the season on the 18th March 2021 in Australia.”

Chase Carey, Chairman/CEO of Formula One, also released a statement regarding the 2021 schedule:

“We are pleased to announce the 2021 Formula 1 provisional calendar after extensive conversations with our promoters, the teams and the FIA. We are planning for 2021 events with fans that provide an experience close to normal and expect our agreements to be honoured.”

“We have proven that we can safely travel and operate our races and our promoters increasingly recognise the need to move forward and manage the virus. In fact, many hosts actually want to use our event as a platform to show the world they are moving forward.”

New to the 2021 Formula One schedule is the inaugural Grand Prix event at Jeddah Street Circuit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix that is scheduled to occur on November 28. The event, which announced its entrance to the F1 calendar on November 5, will serve as the penultimate event of the season.

“We are delighted to see Saudi Arabia become part of the schedule and are equally excited to return to the venues we hoped to race at in 2020,” Carey added. “We want to thank all our promoters and partners for their ongoing enthusiasm and collaboration and look forward to giving our fans an exciting season on the track.”

In addition to the provisional Formula 1 schedule, the provisional schedules for Formula 2 and 3 have also been revealed, with each series to hold three races per weekend. The F2 provisional schedule will feature eight rounds in eight nations while the F3 provisional schedule will feature seven rounds in seven nations. Both series will not race during a Grand Prix weekend as part of new cost-cutting measures with the decrease of the costs of engine lease, some spare parts, logistics and freight. In addition, the F2 cars used in 2021 and the 2019 F3 car’s specs will remain unchanged for the 2021 season.

The F2 series will race at Sakhir, Bahrain; Monte Carlo, Monaco; Baku, Azerbaijan; Silverstone, United Kingdom; Monza Italy; Sochi, Russia; Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi next season. The F3 series will race at Barcelona, Spain; Le Castellet, France; Spielberg, Austria; Budapest, Hungary; Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium; Zandvoort, Netherlands; and Austin, the United States of America in 2021.

All provisional schedules for each series are awaiting subject for approval by the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council.
