Cindric wins the UNOH 188 at Daytona Road Course

Austin Cindric won the NASCAR Xfinity Series race UNOH 188 on Saturday at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course. Cindric led 21 of the 52 laps in route to his fifth Xfinity Series win of the season and the seventh of his career.

“I’m not sure anyone was really happy with their race car. Unfortunately, I have a tough perspective of driving really fast high-grip race cars at this track, but great credit to my team, the MoneyLion guys, and everyone that puts this together. Ford Performance, Roush Yates Engines, obviously everyone at Team Penske for working hard.” Cindric said.

Cindric joins Sam Ard (1983) as the only drivers to win five times in six Xfinity Series races.

“Yeah, it’s incredible,” Cindric said, “and takes great race cars and executing races. I’m proud to be driving this 22 car and contending for wins week to week. There’s still a lot of work to do, but this is great for the points for sure.

“That’s five wins on the year and back-to-back now. I’m really proud of that. I didn’t feel like I drove my best today, but we executed there at the end where it counts and that’s what makes these races so difficult to win.”

Cindric led all 15 laps from the pole to win Stage 1. Chase Briscoe won Stage 2, taking the advantage on Lap 18 when Noah Gragson spun from the lead and then held off a hard-charging Cindric. Briscoe, who led a race-high 26 laps but was caught in a multi-car restart incident with only eight laps remaining, was unable to complete the race and finished 29th.

Brandon Jones finished second, Gragson third, AJ Allmendinger fourth and Andy Lally rounded out the top five.

There are seven races remaining before the Xfinity Series Playoffs begin, with 12 positions available. Cindric, Briscoe, Gragson, Jones, Harrison Burton and Justin Haley have secured their spots in the playoff field with victories. Cindric leads the standings by 48 points over Briscoe.

Up next: The NASCAR Xfinity Series heads to Dover where they will compete Saturday and Sunday. Both races will be broadcast on NBCSN/NBC Sports App, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Competition Update Regarding the No. 3 Car

This morning Richard Childress Racing’s NASCAR Cup Series driver Austin Dillon tested positive for COVID-19. In accordance with NASCAR’s safety protocol, Dillon is self-quarantining away from RCR’s facilities and will not be competing in this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course. Austin’s wife Whitney and son Ace remain healthy and symptom-free. Kaz Grala will drive the No. 3 Chevrolet for RCR this weekend.

RCR takes the safety of our employees, fellow competitors, fans, partners and outside vendors seriously. Based upon recommendations outlined by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), NASCAR and our health partners at Wake-Forest Baptist Health, RCR has enacted procedures and safety protocols designed to minimize the risk of COVID-19 exposure and spread. These guidelines were developed in close consultation with a panel of medical experts with broad experience in infectious diseases, many of whom have been on the front line in treating COVID-19 patients across the country. We will continue to adhere to these guidelines in order to protect the health and safety of our employees and their families, and our business partners.

Season-Opening Victor at Daytona International Speedway Wins Iconic DAYTONA Road Course Event

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 14, 2020) – After a spirited battle of trading paint and lead swapping,  Michael Self muscled his way past Ty Gibbs with six laps to go to win the General Tire 100 ARCA Menards Series race at the DAYTONA Road Course Friday night. The victory kicked off a historical weekend at storied as road course racing for stock cars returned to Daytona Beach.

The General Tire 100 marked the first time in history that the ARCA Menards Series, a staple at Daytona since 1962, had ever competed on the storied tri-oval/road course, made famous by the Rolex 24 AT DAYTONA, North America’s premier event that also started in 1962.

For Self, a noted road course ace, the victory was extra special as he was able to win on layout with many twists and turns (14) but also he made it DAYTONA sweep after winning the season-opener on the high banks of the tri-oval in February. This marks the first time in history two ARCA races have competed at Daytona in a single season and Self won them both.

“It’s a little extra special for me. I wanted to win a road course race so bad this year,” said Self, the championship points leader who notched his second triumph of the season. “This is so special to me. Anytime you win at Daytona it is really special. To do it twice in one year is really cool. Road course racing has a special place in my heart. Just really cool.”

As a result of the win, Self stretched his lead in the title chase to 15 over Bret Holmes, who wound up eighth. As for his hard racing with Gibbs, the grandson of NASCAR team owner Joe Gibbs, Self said, “every point is incredibly important right now. I wanted to lead laps…wanted to get out front. The side-by-side racing that Ty and I had was exciting.”

Self was able to stretch his lead to 6.993 seconds at the checkered flag. Behind Gibbs in third was former IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar champ Colin Braun, who, at the midway point of the event, came in as a relief driver for Sam Mayer, who entered the race with an injured right arm. Rounding out the top six were Taylor Gray, Will Rodgers and Hailie Deegan. 

The start of the race was delayed by nearly three hours for heavy showers, but once the inclement weather moved out of the area, most teams chose to use treaded rain tires on the track, which remained wet in places throughout the race.

NASCAR’s three top-tier series will now get a chance to challenge the DAYTONA Road Course, each for the inaugural time, beginning Saturday with the UNOH 188 for the NASCAR Xfinity Series, which is set for a 3 p.m. ET start. Sunday will feature a doubleheader for the Sunoco 159 for the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series at 12:00 p.m. ET while the NASCAR Cup Series’ Go Bowling 250 will take the green flag at 3:00 p.m. ET.

  • Sam Mayer started third for Friday night’s event on the Daytona Road Course. Mayer maintained the third position until the race break on Lap 15 when the team elected to make a driver change. Colin Braun replaced Mayer, who is suffering from a hairline fracture on his right thumb. Braun took over the second position early in the second half of the race, but would fall back to ultimately finish third.

Sam Mayer – ”We fired off really good at the start of the race and I was able to hold on pretty good. I really couldn’t go much further, I’m glad we had a halfway break because my hand started hurting pretty bad. I’m really proud of Collin (Braun). He got in the car when everybody else had 14 laps and he had zero and he was able to bring home a top three. I’m proud of him and thankful he could be here in the first place.”

Colin Braun – ”I was a little worried when I got to second, honestly. These guys at GMS did a great job, the Chevy was fast. I got myself up into second and thought ‘I don’t really know where I’m supposed to break. I haven’t done a lap yet!’ So for me I sort of over achieved early and then realized I needed to figure out a couple laps here so I know where my break points are and everything. I’m really proud of Sam (Mayer) he was doing a great job. Like I told him I felt like I came in halfway through the movie and had to catch up. Happy to get these guys a top three and on to the next one for them.”

EDDIE TAFOYA IMPRESSIVE DURING INDIANA SPRINT WEEK – HEADED BACK FOR SMACKDOWN

(Chino, CA, August 14, 2020) When Eddie Tafoya Jr. announced he was heading to Indiana to race with the USAC National Sprint Cars during “Indiana Sprint Week,” it marked a giant step in his racing career. Competing against the best in the nation on their home tracks in the grueling series would be a tough experience for the young driver, correct? Absolutely not! The newly turned 23-year-old proved to be anything but intimidated and gave a very favorable account of himself before heading back home to Southern California.

Seven races at seven different tracks crammed into just nine nights is a whole different ballgame than the 2019 USAC/CRA and USAC Southwest Series Rookie of the Year is used to. Afterall, drivers are lucky if they get to race three times a month on the west coast. The Midwest series would prove to be as demanding on cars, drivers, and crews as it is a delight for the fans. While it was challenging, it was also extremely rewarding for the Chino Hills, California based driver, and his team.

“The tracks were pretty fun,” Tafoya said of his first racing experience in the Hoosier state. “Every single one had their own special qualities in how they changed and progressed. I definitely like Lawrenceburg and Terre Haute the best, the two biggest tracks. Tri-State is a super nice facility.”

The series started out at Gas City I69 Speedway. Tafoya garnered attention late in the C Main when his outside run saw him charge from the middle of the pack to less than a car length out of the fourth-place final transfer spot. The following night at “Indiana’s Baddest Bull Ring,” the Kokomo Speedway, he again ended up in the C Main and for the second night in a row, he finished one spot out of the transfer to the B.

A trip to Southern Indiana’s high-banked Lawrenceburg Speedway brought the first portion of Sprint Week to a close for the teams on July 26th. That was the night Tafoya raised everyone’s eyebrows. He improved his qualifying effort of the prior two nights by stopping the clocks at 14.722. That was good enough for the ninth fastest in his group. The impressive performance continued when he beat two of USAC’s top stars to the line to finish fourth in his heat and transfer straight into the main event where he started and finished 19th.

“Lawrenceburg was definitely the highlight of the trip,” Tafoya said. “We went straight into the A-Main from the heat race. I definitely like that fast track, and the roughness. Just had to be up on the wheel and ready to go. I was hoping to make the main events straight through the heats, but I didn’t know if I could get it done (being the first time at the tracks).”

After a couple nights off, the #51T team trekked to the biggest venue in the series, the Terre Haute Action Track. Tafoya, who was the 2018 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns champion, refused to be daunted by the big half-mile clay oval. He turned in his best qualifying effort of the series when he toured the track at 20.582. That was good enough for sixth fastest in his group. He finished sixth in his heat race and that allowed him to skip the C Main and go straight into the B where he placed.

“I like the big tracks,” Tafoya answered when asked about the Terre Haute qualifying effort. “I feel like I have a lot more time to feel the car, feel the track and make decisions even at higher speeds. I feel comfortable doing that.”

The night after Terre Haute, the series switched to Lincoln Park Speedway. The winner there was a rival that none of the drivers could beat. Rain! Not only did heavy rain knock out that race, but it also forced the cancelation of the next night’s race at the Bloomington Speedway.

The rained-out Lincoln Park race was switched to Saturday, July 31st. This time Tafoya found himself back in the C Main where he finished a disappointing 10th before rain intervened again and postponed the remainder of the show.

Tafoya wound up his sojourn to the Midwest at “The Class Track,” the Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Indiana. After qualifying 15th, he was in a stacked heat race that featured five of the top 10 drivers in USAC National points. An impressive showing saw him finish fifth to again get a ticket into the B main event. In the B, the talented young driver came charging and did slip into the final transfer spot. His first night on the track, he see-sawed back in fourth with the more experienced drivers, including the all-time leader in USAC Sprint victories in the waning laps. He got as far up as the sixth and final transfer spot before settling for eighth.

After the promising trip and the fact that there is no racing happening on the west coast due to the COVID Crisis, Tafoya and his team have decided to head back to Indiana for the annual Smackdown race at the Kokomo Speedway August 27th, 28th, and 29th.

“At Kokomo, we started out a little bit tight, but by the end of the night our car was really good,” Tafoya said when asked what the team will change when they get back there. “We were behind the eight-ball starting with qualifying. We will look at our notes and go back to what we ended the night with when we were there last month.”

The team will leave for the Midwest on Sunday, August 23rd. Once there, fans can meet Tafoya at the Indiana races to get autographs and purchase one of his 2020 team shirts.

Michael Self takes historic Daytona Road Course victory

For the first time ever in ARCA Menards Series history, the series visited the Daytona International Speedway Road Course this weekend. The event was created due to the Watkins Glen International race being canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

While the road course upped the intensity, a familiar face was in victory lane again. Venturini Motorsports’ Michael Self swept the Daytona races, as he won the season opener back in February. The win wasn’t easy for the Salt Lake City, Utah native as he had to pass and fend off an aggressive Ty Gibbs late in the going. Self maneuvered his No. 25 Sinclair Lubricants Toyota past Gibbs with six laps to go coming out of Turn 6. From there, Self opened up a big gap, and won the General Tire 100 by almost seven seconds.

“No, this is so special to me,” Self said excitedly about the win. “Anytime you win at Daytona, it’s really cool and special. Obviously, to do this twice, winning on the big track earlier this year, and to come to this (road course), this is a little extra special for me. Road racing has just a special place in my heart. That’s where I come from. I spent a lot of time when I’m not in racing, coaching a lot of guys in the Trans Am Series with the Mike Cope Racing team.”

“To go out and justify that, and do what we did tonight makes me feel so good. I don’t get to road race all that often. So, this is extremely special for me.”

Before the event would get underway ARCA Menards Series officials brought the drivers down pit road in order for them to change from dry to wet tires. Self’s teammate Chandler Smith, was on the pole via a random draw based on owner points.

Speaking of Venturini Motorsports, Self’s day started out rocky well before the race began. He was never able to log any laps in his No. 25 machine in practice due to a faulty spark plug wire. Despite the issue, Self was still able to start alongside his teammate in the second position.

Once the green flag dropped, it was all Ty Gibbs and the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing machine. Self would lead for a brief period of time before Gibbs took the lead in Turns 9 and 10. On that same lap, Chandler Smith lost control of his No. 20 JBL Toyota in Turn 3 and lost several positions. That same turn would cause more incidents in the early laps, with Thad Moffitt in the No. 46, and Nick Igdalsky in the No. 12 spinning around and going off the circuit. But the race would stay green and no cautions flew for these minor incidents.

As the race got closer and closer to the halfway break scheduled for Lap 14, Michael Self closed the gap before the yellow and red flag was displayed. Self was able to grab the lead from Gibbs just one lap before the segment break. When the field came to a stop for adjustments on Lap 14, Self, Gibbs, Sam Mayer, Will Rodgers, Parker Chase, Taylor Gray, Hailie Deegan, Max McLaughlin, Chandler Smith, and Ayrton Ori were the top 10.

One of the more interesting stories coming into tonight’s historic race was Sam Mayer. Mayer’s wrist was injured during a TransAm T2 crash at Road America the week before. resulting in a hairline fracture. He had a backup driver just in case the pain started flaring up throughout the 28 lap race. That backup driver was none other than former NASCAR driver, now turned IMSA driver, Colin Braun. Braun would sub in for Mayer after 15 laps and completed the race for the GMS Racing team. He was able to pilot the No. 21 Chevrolet to a third-place finish.

After the restart came back out with 12 to go, Gibbs took the top spot from Self again in Turns 7 and 8. But, as the race wound down, so did his car and Self caught back up to Gibbs and made the pass. All Gibbs could do was watch as he came home in the second position after being dominant early. There were some hairy moments though for the leaders with three laps to go. Ayrton Ori had a flat left front tire and took the damaged No. 74 machine back to pit road.

However, no yellow flags flew in those remaining laps and Venturini Motorsports captured their fifth win of the 2020 ARCA Menards Series season.

There were four leaders among two lead changes and one caution for two laps.

The three-time DAYTONA 500 Winner Won Two of Three NASCAR Modified Races from 1974-76; NASCAR’s Top-Tier Series Will Tackle the Iconic Layout for the First Time in 44 Years

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 14, 2020) – Prior to this Sunday’s historic Go Bowling 235 At The DAYTONA Road Course, the last time any form of NASCAR stock cars challenged the twists and turns of the iconic layout were from 1974-76 with the NASCAR Modified Division.

It marked three years of notable names from various forms of motorsports in hard competition, and it would put an exclamation point on years of stock cars on a road course at the “Birthplace of Speed,” Daytona Beach, Fla. Road Course racing started on the beach in 1936, then Big Bill France brought the NASCAR Cup Series to the sand and asphalt of A1A from 1949-58. Two years later, the new Daytona International Speedway’s tri-oval/road course featuring Compact Cars, and in the late 1960s and early 70s, the NASCAR Grand Touring and Grand American cars continued to showcase road course racing in Daytona.

NASCAR Modified racing, however, comprised of small stock cars with, as the series name states – modifications – was for the most part, short-track ventures in the northeast. Cars such as Chevrolet Camaros, Vegas and Monzas, along with Ford Pintos, AMC Gremlins and Hornets, were common, all with different visions from their owners on how those modifications could make their cars durable and fast.

Popular Modified driving champions like NASCAR Hall of Famers Jerry Cook and Richie Evans, along with ace Geoff Bodine were ready to go head-to-head down south with the likes of Bobby Allison, Harry Gant and others. When it was all said and done, Allison, the NASCAR Hall of Famer who won in just about every make of car ever created during his career, won two of the three races. Had it not been for a mechanical issue, he may have taken three straight.

“It was an exciting track,” Allison, a three-time DAYTONA 500 Champion, said recently about the DIS road course that measured 3.86 miles. “It had a few tight spots where you could take care of the brakes, but you had to shift in the right places and do all the road course things right. It was a fun deal.”

Allison won in 1974 piloting his Coca-Cola Chevrolet Camaro, holding off Tiny Lund. In ’75, on lap 21 of the 52-lap event (200 miles), he suffered engine woes and was 27th while Merv Treichler was the winner. In ’76, the event’s swansong, Allison, piloting a Hornet, beat Treichler to put his name in the history.

“The Camaro was one that was built out of my shop in Hueytown (Ala.),” said Allison, who also showed his road-course prowess in the NASCAR Cup Series by winning six events. “I had become fond of the road courses. I built that Hornet to Grand American (series) rules at the time. It was versatile enough that I could also run it in USAC races.”

For Sunday’s Go Bowling 235, Allison is jealous that he cannot make a return to the road course layout that he won in three times – the other came in ’72 during a NASCAR Grand American race.

“I think it’s going to be a good show, so good to me I may just come out of retirement….I wish…” joked Allison. “I think the modern Cup guys are really, really tuned to the road racing stuff. They will do a good job. The cars, the equipment is good. I think it will be a really fun thing to watch and a good race.”

Richard Childress Racing at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course … Continuing to navigate through an unprecedented 2020 season, Richard Childress Racing will compete at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course for the first time this weekend. In order to prepare for the new challenge, RCR Cup Series drivers Austin Dillon and Tyler Reddick have spent significant time preparing with their teams in the Chevrolet simulator. Earl Bamber, who will make his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut this weekend under the RCR banner, has competed on the configuration seven times, earning four podium finishes in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Series.

Richard Childress at the Daytona Road Course … Richard Childress competed at the Daytona Road Course as a driver in 1969 when he drove his 1968 Camaro to a 13th-place finish in the Citrus 250. Childress went on to compete on the Florida road course a total of five times, racing in the NASCAR Grand Touring Division and NASCAR Grand American Series. He finished in the top 10 in three out of the five races, with a best result of eighth in 1970.

AUSTIN DILLON QUOTES:
How do you prepare for the Daytona International Speedway Road Course as a driver who has never competed on that configuration before?
“I’ve been working on the simulator to prepare for the race. We’ve all been putting a lot of hours in leading up to the race. You can get some information from watching former races at the track in other series and seeing past 24 Hours of Daytona races, but overall there are some differences because stock cars drive differently and there is an added chicane. It’s an American Ethanol race, and I can’t wait to get out there in that green No. 3 car. I’m looking forward to the race. Some of the guys are going to have a little bit of an advantage because they’ve raced there before, but a lot of us have not and it will be a fun test. We’re just going to go out there and give it our all and see what we come up with.”

Will it be helpful having all three NASCAR series competing at the Daytona Road Course this weekend?
“I think it will be interesting having NASCAR Cup Series cars out on the track. It will be good to get to see the NASCAR Truck Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series on the track before us so we can see how rubber gets laid down and where speed is made.”

Walk us through a lap at the Daytona Road Course …
“It all starts in Turn 1. Obviously, blending onto the track right past the area where we would normally be leaving pit road if we were competing on the oval configuration, that we are all used to. You’ve got a sharp left there, a quick back and forth, and then to another hard right-hander. That slow section through the middle of the track is going to be key, I think. The cars that get through that the best are going to be your best cars of the weekend. Also getting onto the big track in Turns 1 and 2 seems to be where a ton of the speed is carried since that is the longest straightaway. There’s a little section on the back that’s not there for the 24 Hours of Daytona race. It’s a chicane that you approach when you come off of Turn 4. You have to get slowed up really quick for it before the start finish line. It seems like a really fun road course compared to what we usually run. It’s kind of spread out. There are a lot of left-hand turns, which I like because that’s what I’m used to. So we will get there and take what it gives us.”

Knowing that NASCAR has not run on Daytona International Speedway’s Road Course before, how are you preparing for the weekend?
“I’m very excited about the possibility this weekend brings for me and the No. 8 Cat App team. I’ve been taking advantage of Chevrolet’s simulator they have available to us to help get familiar with the course and start learning where passes could potentially be made on Sunday. The Chevy simulator has helped me a lot with road courses in the past. That has always been a style of racing I’ve found challenging, but I think that by using the simulator a lot last year, I was a lot closer to where I wanted to be heading into those weekends. I’m hoping to reach the same level of preparation this year by just making lap after lap on the simulator and practice hitting my marks every time. I’ve also leaned a lot on AJ Allmendinger again. He has worked with my crew chief, Randall Burnett, a lot in the past, and he helped me a lot last year too with the road courses. Randall also has a really good idea on how to set up our Chevrolets for road courses, so I’m confident he has a plan on where he wants the car to be before we even reach the track this weekend. But overall, I’m really looking forward to this weekend. There is just a lot of possibility out there to make up points on the other drivers we’re on the Playoff bubble with, and we’ll need to capitalize on that.”

“It’s a really proud moment for me. It’s been a long time in the making to finally make it on the grid, and it’s also a really cool event to be at the Daytona Road Course. Can you talk us through your preparation for the Daytona Road Course?

“I’m very excited to get out there and hit the race track. It’s going to be interesting with really nobody ever being around that place and having no practice. That’s going to be pretty wild. I’ve went back and watched a lot of YouTube videos, a lot of IMSA races, stuff like that, just trying to look at, basically, the race track and how it’s laid out and just try to figure out how I want to enter each corner. I really looked at the map a lot. I’ve done some stuff on iRacing and some Toyota sim stuff. I’m doing basically all I can do without us having practice, just really trying to focus on the map and just trying to put in my mind how each turn is so I know exactly how to approach each turn.”

It looks like there is seven-to-eight guys who have never driven a road course in anything. What do you think that’s going to do to the dynamic?

“It’s going to be wild. I think in the Truck race, hopefully, the first lap or two, everyone takes it easy. If you look at year’s past at just road course races in general, a lot of people are really aggressive, just trying to get to a good spot. I wouldn’t be so sure that we won’t have a caution on the first lap. It’s going to be a big unknown. It’s nice that I’ve ran some road course races. I ran Canada last year and the year before that, so I do have some road course experience, and have ran fairly decent, so I think that’s going to play a little bit of advantage just because I’ve been around road courses and the downshifting and how to approach corner with your braking and everything else. The guys that have never done it, I definitely feel for them, especially without practice or anything to go off of. That’s definitely going to be a tall order and a task for them.”

Have you had time to assess where you are at heading into the postseason?

“I think we are in a really good spot. We’ve shown speed each and every week. Our goal was to be able to compete and to be a top-five truck each and every week, and I feel like everybody at HRE (Hattori Racing Enterprises), Scott (Zipadelli, crew chief) and all of the guys, have done that basically every weekend. We might start out and be in the back half of the top-10, but me and Scott, we’ve been really good working together, making the right calls and adjustments, that way at least by the end of the race, we are fighting for a top-five, and fighting for the win. I really feel like we are in a good spot. If you take away where we finished last weekend, and if you take away the Texas deal, where we had the engine issue, we’ve been competitive, we’ve been a top-five truck basically every week. We’re just showing the consistency that we have. I think that we are actually in a really good spot. We have a really good chance at these Playoffs. It’s going to be all about staying consistent. If you can win a race, that’s great, but the biggest thing is just staying consistent, get stage points. That’s really the only thing that we haven’t done this year is getting stage wins that we would like. I think we only have like one stage win this season. That’s really the only thing that we’ve been talking about, and trying to check off that box a little bit better is trying to be a little bit better earlier in the race, so we can at least get one or two stage wins throughout a race to help us when the Playoffs start.

Where would you stack up the Daytona Road Course on the most challenging things you have done in your career?

“It’s got to be right up there at the top. It’s going to probably be the most challenging thing I’ve ever done just because we’re not going to have any practice. If you would have told me that we would have had five laps of practice, then I would have said it wouldn’t have been that bad just because you can at least see the race track, shake your truck down a little bit for five laps and be okay. But the fact that we are not going to have any practice, and just line them up, and take one or two pace laps around the truck to kind of get familiarized with it, and then drop the green flag off into turn one, not knowing what is to be expected, that’s a really tall order. We feel like the things and the preparations that I’ve done in the sim and everything else with Toyota that I kind of know where my shift points are going to be and what gear I’m going to be in in certain corners, but you don’t know until you get to the race track for certain. A lot of big unknowns. It’s going to be exciting, but it’s definitely going to be challenging. It’s nice that we are starting up front. Hopefully, we can just stay up there. The biggest thing is just getting single-filed out and just trying to stay in that top-five and feel your truck out the first five or so laps and see where you are at with things and start making a plan with your crew chief on what adjustments you need to make or if the splitter is too high or too low, things like that. A lot of big unknowns and the biggest thing is going to be you and the crew chief being able to diagnose what the truck is doing to make it that much better throughout the race. If you can do that better than everybody else and just stay on track, you are going to have a good day.”

Could you provide us an update on what you are working towards for next year?

“As of right now, we don’t have anything in the works. We’ve been talking with a lot of our partners and sponsors, United Rentals, is a big sponsor for us, and one of the biggest sponsors I’ve ever had, so we’ve been talking with those guys and trying to figure out what the plan looks like for next year. We are still working at it. We’re at a point in the season where we are trying to slowly just figure it out. I’m just happy to be in the position I’m at. We will see what next year looks like. I don’t know what the future holds as far as Truck racing, Xfinity racing or anything like that, I’m not real sure there. It’s still kind of a big unknown, but everything is looking okay. I think next year’s going to be a good year. We just have to figure out what we are doing.”

Like Graf Jr., Donahue will make his Xfinity Series debut as crew chief on the Daytona International Speedway Road Course.

This Is 2020: Entering the Daytona Road Course, Graf Jr. has 21 NASCAR Xfinity Series starts to his credit with four top-15 and eight top-20 finishes. After 18 races in 2020, he stands 21st in the championship standings with 15 races remaining.

The 38-car field will take the green flag shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 15, 2020 with live coverage on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN), the Motor Racing Network (Radio) and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Satellite Radio, Channel 90).
