Kevin Harvick Sets New Track Record In Sprint Cup Qualifying

Kevin Harvick took the Coors Light Pole Award for the 5-hour ENERGY 400 Benefiting Special Operations Warrior Foundation with a new track record of 27.799 seconds or 194.658 mph. This is Harvick’s eighth pole in 477 Sprint Cup Series races and his second in 17 races at Kansas Speedway. This is his second pole and sixth consecutive top 10 finish in 2014.

“Just have to thank everybody on my Jimmy John’s Chevrolet for all that they do,” Harvick said. “It was ‘Freaky Fast’ today so just have to put it all together tomorrow night when it counts. The pole is great, these guys have done a great job for qualifying.  It makes life a lot easier when you can have pit stall one.  Hopefully we can have a good night tomorrow night, but the weekend has gone good we had a great test here a few weeks ago and everything has carried right over.”

Qualifying was uneventful with the exception of Aric Almirola’s brush with the wall in the final seconds of the final round of qualifying. The Richard Petty Motorsports Team will make repairs to the Farmland Industry’s No. 43 for tomorrow evenings race.

Standouts that did not advance to the final round of qualifying include Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Clint Bowyer, Kasey Kahne and Austin Dillion.

The only driver that did not qualify was Dave Blaney who missed the final position by .317 seconds.

Jimmie Johnson says “nothing to worry about” with not winning yet

Photo Credit: Kyle Rivas/Getty Images North America

As each week ticks by, a constant question continues to be asked – when will Jimmie Johnson win a race this season? As we stand 10 laps into the season, six-time currently sits seventh in points with three top-fives and five top-10s. Johnson has shown speed this year so far and contended for wins – with bad luck on track taking him out of contention some weeks.

With drivers needing at least one win to lock themselves into the Chase, some have been wondering whether the No. 48 Lowe’s team should be hitting the panic button. According to Johnson, he says they don’t need to.

“Where we sit in points right now we are locked in,” he added. “Of course we want to win; we want to win every race we go to.  We have been in the ballpark and have been very close to victory a couple of times and it got away.  Yes, there have been some poor performances.  We are trying to raise that.  I don’t think that we are where we want to be as a team right now, but we have had a few looks at wins and I know we will get a few more.”

Johnson’s theory has always been if they continue to put themselves in position, they will score a win and put themselves into the Chase solidly versus the points scenario.

Even if they don’t get the win, Johnson believes that some will still get in via points and he feels that they will make it in as “there is a bigger window to make the Chase today than there was last year.  Last year was 12, this year it’s 16.”

Johnson isn’t the only driver without a win so far this year, however he is one of drivers that continues to be focused on when the discussions start.

“Successful teams can sometimes be their own worst enemy with expectations that are set in that respect,” Johnson commented.

With his success over the years, people suspected that Johnson would win early and lock himself in. However, that hasn’t happened yet. However, does that hurt Johnson’s confidence? Certainly not.

“I still feel that we are extremely competitive and I feel as an individual I’m a better race car driver today than I was last year,” he commented. “I just keep learning more and experiencing more and add that to my repertoire of things to do.  Our team is as strong as it has ever been. Our teammates are all running very well this year.”

Sebastian Saavedra surprises with Grand Prix of Indianapolis Pole

The rain falling on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course turned out to be the great equalizer and interest as Sebastian Saavedra scored his first ever Verizon P1 Award in his 42nd career Verizon IndyCar Series start.

“I love the rain. It was crazy at first because we didn’t know what to expect from the track – if it was going to be wet, if it was going to be dry,” Saavedra commented. “We were comfortable yesterday, as it got hotter, we just needed to work a little bit more – especially with the rain. We made a huge leap this morning and then the whole session was just weird. It started to rain and went from wet, to dry, to super dry, to super wet. I loved it.”

The Colombian will be joined on the front row by rookie Jack Hawksworth, as Hawksworth looks towards his fourth IndyCar series career start. Hawksworth. In four IndyCar starts, Hawksworth has been in the Firestone Fast Six twice.

“To be honest, I’m working very well with the team,” he commented. “They’re giving me what I want. I think I’m able to kind of lead them in the right direction with the car, as well. I’m not too worried about not having a teammate. I kind of like it. Really looking forward to the rest of the season with them. We started the season out quite strong. There’s been glimmers of speed and potential.  Not all quite there yet, but hopefully tomorrow is the day when we do to.”

Ryan Hunter-Reay posted the quickest time during the session, however spun in turn one and backed the truck into the wall to bring out the red flag. As a result, Hunter-Reay has his fastest two laps dropped and will start third. Hunter-Reay damaged the back of his Dallara, but feels that the team will easily get it repaired.

We definitely gave that one away,” he commented. “It’s a fun track. Since we got here it’s been dry-wet-dry-wet. It was changing conditions and it was a lot of fun, but it ended the wrong way, so congrats to Saavedra – good job and good pace. It’s going to be a really great championship race (tomorrow) and there will be a lot of passing – especially with these long straights. There will be a lot of different strategies on downforce and tires. I think there will be a lot of (teams) mixing it up like you always do with the Verizon IndyCar Series.”

Simon Pagenaud continued showing the speed that he has had all year so far, qualifying fourth, with Will Power and Scott Dixon rounding out the Firestone Fast Six. Dixon was fastest in yesterday’s practice.

The Inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis is scheduled for 3:50 p.m. local time.

Five Sprint Cup Contenders To Watch at Kansas

Credit: NASCAR Via Getty Images

Going into Kansas this weekend, we are celebrating Mother’s Day. Let’s see some drivers that are going to make their momma’s proud, and that we need to keep an eye on during the Sprint Cup Series race there Saturday Night.

Kevin Harvick –

Harvick has been on a roll this season. Not only is he locked into the Chase with two wins so far this season, but his cars have also been fast. Had it not been for a few mechanical issues and accidents, Harvick may potentially have more wins under his belt. Coming into Kansas, fans can’t help but think back to last fall, during the Kansas race that Kevin Harvick not only started from the pole, but also went on to dominate,(leading 138 laps) and win the race. Keep your eyes on Kevin Harvick coming into Sunday’s race.

Jimmie Johnson –

Johnson, though winless this season, has shown potential. At Kansas, he has the second highest driver’s rating. Coming off of a run like Talladega, Johnson needs to redeem himself. Expect Johnson to be a key player coming into Kansas.

Matt Kenseth –

Kenseth, another veteran Sprint Cup champion without a win this season, was an expert at the intermediate tracks last year. Heading into Kansas, Kenseth has the second best finishing average at the intermediate tracks this season. With two wins under his belt already at Kansas, expect Kenseth to finish near the front this weekend.

Dale Earnhardt Jr –

Despite being the first one out and going up in flames while trying to mow the grass  at the last intermediate track (Texas), and coming off a less than stellar finish at Talladega, Dale Jr is going to be looking for vengeance. Will he try and cut the grass again at Kansas? I don’t know. If he doesn’t, then expect him and the 88 team to be contenders at Kansas, and his fifth best drivers rating at Kansas is encouraging.

Joey Logano –

The only other driver with two wins this season will be looking for a third this weekend when going into Kansas. He won the last race at an intermediate track and finished fourth at Vegas. Expect the young veteran to be somewhere near the front this weekend at Kansas.

Busch Sets New Track Record At Kansas Speedway

The pole for the SFP 250 went to Kyle Busch with a new track qualifying record of 178.921 mph. It is Busch’s 13th pole in 117 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) starts and his first in three races at Kansas Speedway.

The final 12 waited until there were two minutes remaining in the session before taking the track. The field was led to the green by Brandon Newberry who ended up 12th in the final session.

Knock out qualifying for the Camping World Truck Series went off with only a couple snags. The first occurred when Ben Kennedy got loose and slapped the wall with the rear of the truck and was relegated to a back up truck. The second happened when Darrell Wallace Jr lost a second motor on the weekend in the second round of knock out qualifying.

Three drivers will be doing double duty this weekend, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, and Ryan Blaney. All three qualified in the top-12 for tonight’s SFP 250.
