David Starr Looking for Lady Luck

After two straight disappointing finishes David Starr and the SS Green Light Racing team look for Lady Luck to help them turn their fortunes around in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Smiths 350 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Indianapolis-based building enclosure specialist ASI Limited will sponsor Starr’s Toyota Tundra for the Smiths 350 along with Las Vegas landmark Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower with associate support from Zachry.

“Last year I had a pretty good run going and we got a flat tire towards the end of the race,” Starr said. “I really love racing at Las Vegas, you always remember where you got your first victory and I’m looking forward to going back to try for another.”

“I really like how hard this team works, the stops have been good and they never give up,” David continued. “Its just a matter of time before we put it all together.”

Crew Chief Jason Miller feels they will have a strong truck this weekend. “We recently purchased a Toyota Tundra from KBM and the SS Green Light guys have been working hard to get it ready for Las Vegas. It’s TRD chassis number 100, I think it’s a real nice piece and we can’t wait to get it to the track and see what we can do with it.”

Starr has ten career NCWTS starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with three top-five finishes and five top-ten finishes including his first of four career victories back in 2002. David’s average start is 13.0 and his average finish is 12.7.

“Its unfortunate that we got spun and caused a caution last week at New Hampshire. Jason made a great call saving a set of tires and we were working towards the top-ten when we were wrecked on the last lap,” Starr added. “Jason is better than we’ve shown, I’m better than we’ve shown and this team has shown me a lot of potential over the last two weeks. Let’s hope that we can put that bad luck behind us in Las Vegas.”

The Smiths 350 is the 240th consecutive NCWTS start for the SS Green Light Racing team and the 260th career start for Starr in the Truck series.

42 trucks are on the preliminary entry list for the Smiths 350.

Practice for the NCWTS Smiths 350 will be Saturday, September 25th at 9:00 a.m. (12:00 Eastern) with final practice 10:45 a.m. (1:45 p.m. Eastern) and qualifying at 3:15 p.m. (6:15 Eastern.) The race will be shown live on SPEED TV at 6:30 p.m. (9:30 p.m. Eastern.) It will also be broadcast live via radio worldwide on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and on SIRIUS Satellite Radio NASCAR Channel 128-XM104.

David, along with teammates Jason White and Tony Jackson Jr. will participate in a free autograph session at the Stratosphere Hotel & Casino on Friday, September 24th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Ambrose Chasing after his First NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Victory with Nine Races Remaining in the Season

DOVER, Del. (September 21, 2010) – – As the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship continues at Dover International Speedway with Denny Hamlin in first, Marcos Ambrose and JTG Daugherty Racing have a chase of their own seeking a victory in the premiere division before the curtain closes on the 2010 season.

“Nine races remain and we are chasing after our first victory,” said Ambrose, who is 25th in the drivers points standings. “There are not many races left and we are competing against the top 12 championship contending teams that have saved the best for last. It’s going to be tough, but we’re up for the challenge.”

Ambrose, who is piloting the No. 47 Bush’s Baked Beans Toyota Camry on Sunday, was on the right path these past couple of weeks. One top-five and two top-10s in a row made the Australian driver optimistic entering New Hampshire Motor Speedway last weekend, but a 30th-place finish at the 1.058-mile track surprisingly interrupted his streak.

“We had a tough time at New Hampshire and didn’t expect our weekend to go the way it did,” Ambrose said. “It just wasn’t our day and we struggled with handling. We are looking to bounce back at Dover.”

Now, the Monster Mile has crept up on the 36-race schedule where Toyota drivers swept the weekend in May with Kyle Busch winning both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series races (and Aric Almirola picked up the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory). Ambrose’s best NASCAR Sprint Cup Series finish in a Toyota Camry at the 24-degree banked concrete oval is 14th (9/27/09).

Last time out at Dover, two right front cut tires sent Ambrose sailing into the outside retaining wall twice, which ultimately knocked him out of the race and forced him to settle for a 36th-place finish.

“During the May race, we cut down two tires and it was a shame our day ended early,” Ambrose said. “The car was too damaged to continue on.”

Ambrose has finished 32nd, 20th, 14th and 36th (accident) respectively at Dover in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. He also has four starts at the Delaware track in the NASCAR Nationwide Series with a best finish of sixth-place (6/2/07).

“Dover is great, but I will admit that it is a really tough place to race,” Ambrose said. “My first time racing a Cup car there was a bigger challenge than I ever imagined and I went a few laps down. Over the years, I’ve got a good handle on it. I love the place and it on my top three list of favorite tracks.”

It is also a favorite track of JTG Daugherty Racing co-owners Jodi and Tad Geschickter, who will be making a detour to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. before arriving in Dover. The Walter Reed Army Medical Center is the hub of the Walter Reed Health Care System, which provides comprehensive health care for more than 150,000 soldiers, other service members, family members and retirees.

“We look forward to going to Dover and this time the trip will be extra special for me and my husband Tad because we have the opportunity to stop and make a visit at Walter Reed Army Medical Center thanks to NASCAR,” Jodi Geschickter said. “We both know it will be an overwhelming experience. We are grateful and humbled to have the opportunity to tell these brave men and women how much we appreciate their service to our country. Truly, we’ll never understand the depth of their sacrifice. It will be our privilege to spend the day with the troops.”

Live coverage on ESPN of the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway on Sunday begins at 1 p.m. ET. MRN Radio and Sirius XM Satellite will also air the event.

No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra News and Notes

This Week’s Tundra… The No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs team will race chassis RMM-108 this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Skinner drove this particular chassis at Darlington Raceway where he raced inside the top-10 for most of the night. During the closing laps, Skinner was caught up in a multi-car crash where the No. 5 Toyota Tundra suffered race-ending damage.

Lucky Las Vegas… Mike Skinner has experienced more success at Las Vegas Motor Speedway than any other driver in the NCWTS field. The driver of the No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra is the only driver to record multiple victories at the 1.5-mile oval. Additionally, Skinner leads the field with three pole awards throughout his eight starts at the Nevada track.

Barrett-Jackson… Before going on track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Mike Skinner will attend the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction on Friday. The 1995 NCWTS Champion is also a car enthusiast with a collection of his own hot rods that will be featured in a special segment transitioning from the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on Saturday afternoon.

Meet Mike… Fans are invited to attend a public autograph session to be held at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino on Friday, September 24th from 7:15-8:00 p.m. The driver of the No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs for the crowd.

Toyota Loyalty… Skinner is the only driver to have piloted a Toyota Tundra in every NCWTS Series race. The two teamed up in 2004 when the manufacturer entered the NASCAR arena.

Most Popular Driver… Voting is open to name Mike Skinner as the NCWTS’ Most Popular Driver. Cast your vote by Nov. 12, 2010: http://www.nascar.com/news/features/2010.truck.mpd/index.html

Watch and Listen… The Smith’s Food & Drug Stores 350 will be broadcast live on SPEED, MRN Radio and Sirius XM Channel 128 beginning at 9:00 PM EST on Saturday, September 25. Two practice sessions and qualifying will take place on Saturday but will not be televised.

Mike Skinner on racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

“Las Vegas Motor Speedway is one of my favorite tracks. I’ve had a lot of success there over the years and we hope to continue that trend this weekend. The guys on the International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra team have put in a lot of long hours to prepare our truck for this race and I think we’ll have a great weekend. We also have a new teammate at the track with Tayler Malsam in the No. 25 Exide Batteries Toyota Tundra; he’s a talented driver and I think it will be cool to work with him again.”

Crew Chief Stacy Johnson on competing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

“Las Vegas Motor Speedway is one of those races that we circle the date on our calendar. Our International Truck/Monaco RVs team had a great race at the last mile-and-a-half track—Kentucky Speedway—so we’re looking forward the race this weekend too. We’ve done a lot of work on our mile-and-a-half program and we feel that our trucks are getting better week after week. Given Skinner’s past success at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, we hope to have a really great race on Saturday night.”

Randy Moss Motorsports Returns to Las Vegas Motor Speedway as a Two-Truck Team

Tayler Malsam Will Drive the No. 25 Exide® Batteries Toyota Tundra

STATESVILLE, N.C. (Sept. 21, 2010) – Randy Moss Motorsports will return to Las Vegas Motor Speedway as a two-truck organization with sophomore driver Tayler Malsam behind the wheel of the team’s second Toyota Tundra entry. Malsam will return to the team where he made his rookie of the year campaign in the NASCAR® Camping World Truck Series™ to pilot the No. 25 EXIDE Batteries Toyota Tundra at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to go back to Randy Moss Motorsports and race with my old team,” commented Washington native Malsam. “When we parted ways it was on good terms and I’m still friends with the guys on the team so it’s like I’m going back to race with family. Exide is a fantastic sponsor; we had a great time working together last season and I’m looking forward to having them on my Toyota Tundra at Las Vegas [Motor Speedway]. Hopefully we can pick up right where we left off and race for the win on Saturday night.”

Despite a new number on the side of his Toyota Tundra, Malsam will compete with many of the same team members that he raced with during his rookie campaign including crew chief Doug Wolcott.

“It’s going to be great to have Tayler back behind the wheel of our Toyota Tundra,” said Wolcott. “We had a lot of success with Tayler throughout the 2009 season—10 top-10 finishes and finished just outside the top-10 [in 12th] in the season point standings. There is no doubt that Tayler is a talented driver; he gives great feedback to help us make the adjustments we need on the truck and knows how to get up on the wheel. Our guys have worked hard to prepare a great truck for the race at Las Vegas [Motor Speedway] and I think you’ll see us racing near the front of the field before the night is over on Saturday.”

Randy Moss Motorsports started the season as a two-truck organization but took a brief three-week hiatus to regroup and prepare for Malsam’s return to the No. 25 Exide Batteries Toyota Tundra. Malsam is expected to be behind the wheel of the No. 25 Toyota Tundra again before the 2010 season concludes, stay tuned for race dates and sponsor information.

DODGE MOTORSPORTS QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Dover will always be such an extraordinary track for me that holds such significance as far as my career goes. If you would have told me years ago that we’d be coming back into Dover after all these races without a win, I would have said, ‘Man, you’ve gotta be kidding me.’ We’ve had so much success at Bristol, the other high‐banked concrete track, you’d think we’d been able to win on the bigger one‐mile oval.”

Kurt Busch – No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger

KURT BUSCH – INSIDE THE CHASE NUMBERS

ENGINEERING TALK

“Last week, the Chase started at Loudon, a one-mile flat track. This week, the 12 drivers have the challenge of Dover, another one-mile track. No problem, right? Nothing could be farther from the truth. The flat, tight, slow corners of Loudon give way this week to the high-banked, wide-open and very- fast corners of Dover where drivers talk about how the car “lands” on entry to Turn 1 and Turn 3. The engineering challenge this week is to maintain the incredibly high straightaway speeds through the high-banked corners at the Monster Mile.”

Howard Comstock, Dodge Motorsports Engineering

DODGE DRIVER QUOTES

“I’ve said all along that these next two races – this weekend’s race at Dover and the following week at Kansas – look to be our huge challenges during the Chase. Based off what we saw there in the spring race, Dover may just be the biggest hurdle that our Miller Lite Dodge Team faces.

“It’s all about consistency during the entire 10‐race stretch; logging those top‐fives and top‐10s. That’s definitely our goal heading into Dover this weekend. We need to come out of there on Sunday with another notch added to one of those columns.”

Kurt Busch, No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger

“Goodyear changed the tires around a little bit for this weekend, so hopefully we will get a better idea of where we need to be on Friday. I really like Dover; it’s a fun track. It feels like one of the fastest tracks on the circuit and it’s definitely one of the most physical places we run at as well.

Usually when someone wrecks at Dover, they get loose coming off the corner and slide up towards the wall. When the car slows down, they come back down the track. Everyone tries to guess where the car will go and inevitably more cars get involved in the accident. It can be like a domino effect. It’s a lot like a speedway race because there aren’t too many places to hide when trouble happens in front of you.”

Sam Hornish Jr. No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger

“I really think I am getting more and more confident on the Cup side. That’s probably the most important thing that having a year in Cup has given me. I feel like I can go out the first lap in practice and drive my car a lot harder than I used to. Everything just seems like it has become slower for me and that gives me a better feel for everything.”

• REWIND, RICHMOND, Va. – Paul Menard rolled off the grid in the 10th position on Friday night at Richmond International Raceway. Menard began moving up through the field saying that his Richmond/Menards Ford Mustang was free in the corners, tight in the center and free off but it was manageable. The veteran driver ran as high as sixth by lap 50 and continued to be in the top ten for the first 110 laps. Menard made a green flag pit stop on lap 111 and returned to the track in the 18th position. The wheelman methodically worked his Ford Mustang back in the top 10 and took the checkered flag in the eight position.

Charlotte Motor Speedway and Panasonic Announce World’s Largest HD Video Board

CONCORD, N.C. (Sept. 21, 2010) – Continuing a tradition of innovation and fabulous firsts, Speedway Motorsports Inc. Chairman Bruton Smith and Charlotte Motor Speedway officials announced a partnership with Panasonicto revolutionize the fan experience at sporting events with the creation of the world’s largest high-definition video board.

Panasonic will also become the founding sponsor of the video board and a Speedway Motorsports Inc. alliance partner around its broad portfolio of advanced technologies.

At an incredible length of 200 feet wide, standing 80 feet tall and weighing 165,000 pounds, the video board will cover an expansive 16,000 square feet and be located between Turns 2 and 3 along the backstretch of the legendary superspeedway. Fans seated throughout the frontstretch from Turn 4 to Turn 1 will have clear viewing angles of the gigantic board that will feature 720P high-definition visuals illuminated by more than nine million light emitting diode, or LED, lamps.

“Charlotte Motor Speedway continually establishes itself as a pioneer when it comes to one-of-a-kind, over-the-top facility enhancements that change the game for motorsports fans,” said Smith. “Fans will see this like a gigantic television that will elevate the NASCAR experience in ways they have never dreamed. It will give them a view of the on-track action on the world’s largest high-definition screen. The fans will feel closer than ever before to the cars and stars of NASCAR at each event.”

In addition to the live race coverage, the video board will provide fans with interactive entertainment, continuous leaderboard updates, sponsor information and instant replays.

“Panasonic is proud of our efforts to bring this spectacular new high-definition scoreboard to Charlotte Motor Speedway,” said James Doyle, president, Panasonic Enterprise Solutions Company. “This amazing example of industry-leading technology and engineering speaks volumes about our strong relationship with Charlotte Motor Speedway as we work together to bring innovative concepts to life and enhance the fan experience.

“Panasonic worked closely with Charlotte Motor Speedway to design the end-to-end system from the control room to this massive HD video board,” Doyle added. “We are confident that the new Panasonic HD video board system will leave fans awestruck and make their entire Charlotte Motor Speedway experience that much more enjoyable and memorable. “

Construction will begin on the video board following the Oct. 13-16 Bank of America 500 Week at Charlotte Motor Speedway and is scheduled to be complete by April, 2011.

Panasonic is now the exclusive audio/video provider of Charlotte Motor Speedway with category exclusivity inclusive of camera, camcorder, television, display and Blu-ray.

The creation of the video board is the latest in a tradition of trend-setting innovations and fabulous firsts at Charlotte Motor Speedway during its 51-year history. Other notable firsts include:

600-Mile Race. In 1960, Charlotte Motor Speedway became the first and only track to host a 600-mile NASCAR-sanctioned event. Now known as the Coca-Cola 600, the race is still the longest and one of the most prestigious on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule.
Spectacular Pre-Race Shows. Starting in 1977, Charlotte Motor Speedway became the first track to host elaborate pre-race shows. Through the years, fans have enjoyed a reenactment of the Battle of Grenada; a three-ring circus; numerous world-record automobile stunts and concerts; a 5,000 member marching band and an assemblage of 5,000 firefighters honoring the heroes of Sept. 11, 2001.
Luxury Condominiums. Charlotte Motor Speedway became the first sports facility in America to offer year-round living accommodations in 1984 when it released 40 condominiums for sale high above Turn 1. Twelve additional condominiums were added in 1990.

The Speedway Club. Opened in 1988, The Speedway Club was the first exclusive members-only private club to be constructed at a motorsports facility. The club features restaurant seating for 240 people overlooking the frontstretch and expansive ballroom and boardroom banquet facilities. Members enjoy a champagne toast with the race winner after each Coca-Cola 600 and Bank of America 500.

Night Racing. Charlotte Motor Speedway became the first modern speedway to offer night racing in 1992 after installing a $1.7-million, 1,200-fixture permanent lighting system. The system was different from any installed at other tracks in that it used a system of adjustable mirrors surrounding the inside of the track to moderate the light aimed at the drivers.

The Final Word – Loudon came down to one question, ‘Got Gas’?

So, what did we learn at Loudon?

Well, we learned that with no gas, you don’t go. You don’t go, you don’t win. Just ask Tony Stewart. Just ask Jeff Burton. Stewart was just one caution away from being able to save enough go-go juice to get there. It did not come, he wound up on fumes, and he got to the finish line by coasting as the winner was doing his burn out right behind him. Even Fred Flintstone would have been faster than Smoke.

We learned that Clint Bowyer had just enough fuel to get there. Just. His burn out lasted only until his car coughed and quit. With his first win of the season, and just the third of his Cup career, Bowyer moves to within 35 points of Denny Hamlin after round one of the Chase.

We learned that some would do well. Hamlin had gas, and finished second. Non-chasers such as Jamie McMurray and Dale Earnhardt Jr managed top fives, as did Kevin Harvick. Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch came through with top tens. Carl Edwards and Kurt Busch were also in the top 15, still in decent shape for this Sunday’s run at Dover. For some, the result last weekend was down right indecent.

We learned that sometimes the risk isn’t really worth the reward. Stewart went from first to 24th, just one spot ahead of a snake bit Jimmie Johnson. It has been said a finish outside the top 15 in any Chase event could finish one’s championship chances. Well, Burton was 15th last Sunday, while Roush drivers Greg Biffle (17th) and Matt Kenseth (23rd) have even bigger holes to climb out of. Kenseth is now in twelfth place, 136 points away. He is not out, but he has had his mulligan.

We learned that a track like the one at Loudon provides more televised entertainment than the one at Richmond. They raced close, they bumped, they spun, and some tried to win in the end carrying the same amount of fuel as a soap box derby auto. The ESPN boys and girls were even informative and entertaining. What more could you ask for? Okay, Rusty and Brad were once again all hat and no cattle, but let’s accentuate the positive.

We learned that when Kevin Conway and his sponsor, Extenze, left Front Row Racing for Robby Gordon’s outfit, it may have stunted the financial growth of their former associates. So, Front Row is suing both driver and sponsor, no doubt to either extend their relationship or be compensated for denying them a potentially enlarged economic situation. Maybe another solution could be to firm up a new deal and return Viagra to NASCAR.

Johnson swept Dover last year, with Kyle Busch taking this spring’s event. In fact, all of the Chasers were in the top twenty in May. Maybe good things do come to those who rate. Of course, having gas in the tank doesn’t hurt. Enjoy the week.
