AJ Allmendinger, JTG Daugherty Racing, Watkins Glen International Preview

Track: Watkins Glen International
Event: Cheez-It 355 At The Glen
Race Date / Time:  Sunday, August 10
TV / Radio: ESPN / MRN / SiriusXM

TEAM QUOTES:

Watkins Glen: “Watkins Glen International is just a fast road course,” Allmendinger said. “Most of the corners are high speed. It’s a fun course because of that. Each road course we go to has their little bit of differences. Sonoma Raceway is a slower track where rear grip is such a premium there that you can easily tear off the rear tires. At Watkins Glen,  it’s important to get a good overall balance. If you are a little tight, you are not going to get through the S’s very well and through the high speed stuff. If you are loose, the slower speed stuff, you are going to cook the rear tires. This is more of an overall balance than say compared to a Sonoma. You are constantly looking to find rear grip to not burn the rear tires off it.”

High hopes: “The No. 47 SCOTT Products Chevrolet SS team is on a mission this weekend at Watkins Glen International,” crew chief Brian Burns said. “Obviously, with our driver we have focused on the two road courses. We had a car that could have won Sonoma Raceway. After our Watkins Glen test, we feel better about this track and we have made a lot of gains. We were fortunate to test with some really competitive teams and it was nice to walk away having the best car there. We have high expectations. We know if we do everything right, the cautions fall our way and we have no bad luck that we have the car to beat. That’s a good feeling going into the weekend.”

Looking back: “Last year at Watkins Glen, we easily had a top-three car,” Burns said. “Unfortunately, we ran out of gas and that positioned AJ at the rear of the field with not many laps remaining. It was something else to watch him charge through the field and finish in the top-10. That day, we all realized how good of a road course driver he really is. With a driver like him, we don’t have to take risky chances this weekend and it makes calling the race easier.”

Proud of the team: “We went to Watkins Glen International and tested and had an unbelievable day,” JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Brad Daugherty said. “AJ broke the track record by a second. We feel very comfortable going back just like we went to Sonoma Raceway. We went there and had a great test. We came to the race very well prepared and had a great run. I think learning from that experience we went into this test prepared knowing what we needed to look for and what we were trying to get feel wise out of the racecar for AJ for Watkins Glen. We came away with optimal performance.”

Track smack: “We’ve got this race circled,” Daugherty said. “We’re going into Watkins Glen looking to win the race. There’s no reason not to. We have got a good enough crew of guys that work really hard on this racecar and we’ve got a great racecar driver. Yeah we are a little smaller than the big guns, but we don’t use that as an excuse. I know AJ is looking forward to it and I’m looking forward to it. I’ve been talking junk to Marcos Ambrose, Jamie McMurray and all these guys all week. We’ve got to back it up.”

Bathroom makeover:  “Scott Brand is offering two lucky winners $25,000 to make over their bathrooms through the ‘Pic to Win’ Sweepstakes,” Allmendinger said. “Go to SCOTTBrand.com to find out more.”

Racing-Rewards.com:  “Hey fans, if you haven’t gone to Racing-Rewards.com and signed up, go do it right now,” Allmendinger said. “We have all kinds of prizes, all kinds of stuff. You are missing out. Go sign up.”

Sponsor announcement alert:  “The Clorox Company announced at Sonoma Raceway they were returning to JTG Daugherty Racing as a primary sponsor through 2017 and now we have some more news,” Allmendinger said. “On Friday, we will announce another major partner that is returning. We’re pretty excited at all the great things going on for us right now.”
