CGR at Bristol: Since 2001, drivers of Chip Ganassi owned race cars have accumulated six top-five and 21 top-10 finishes at Bristol Motor Speedway (BMS). Those drivers have led a total of 476 laps and completed 21,789 miles of competition at the half-mile oval.

Closer to Kick-Off: Announced last year, the first-ever college football game, dubbed the Battle at Bristol, will be played on Sept. 10, 2016, between the University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech. The game will be the second time the World’s Fastest Half-Mile has hosted football; the first being in 1961 when the track hosted a preseason NFL game between the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR BRISTOL MOTOR SPEEDWAY

Jamie McMurray and No. 1 McDonald’s Team

Texas Recap: The Lone Star State was the site of race number seven on the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) season. Following an open weekend on the schedule teams got back to action for the first night race of the season at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS). Jamie McMurray made the start from the 10th position and battled hard in the closing laps for a sixth-place finish.

Going The Distance: McMurray, who has 24 career NSCS starts at Bristol Motor Speedway, has been running at the finish of all but one race in which he has competed in at the “World’s Fastest Half-mile”. He has completed 11,703 (97.4%) of a possible 12,016 laps and has finished on the lead lap in 13 of those 24 starts. The driver of the No. 1 McDonald’s Chevrolet SS has scored three top-five, and 10 top-10 finishes with an average start of 16.6 and an average finish of 17.4 since his first start in March 2003. McMurray has a best starting position of third (Aug. 2007) and a best finish of third on two occasions (Aug. 2003 and Aug. 2010). McMurray led 148 laps during last year’s Bristol night race.

Short-track Style: 73 times McMurray has started a short-track race in his NSCS career; he has six top-five and 28 top-10 finishes on tracks less than one mile in length and has been running at the finish in 66 of those races (90.4%), completing 19,264 miles of competition and has led 405 laps.

Kyle Larson and No. 42 Target Team

Texas Recap: In the first race following the recent off-weekend for NASCAR, Kyle Larson and the Target team looked for another solid finish at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS), where they scored two top-10 finishes last season. Another strong qualifying effort from the team earned Larson a start just inside the top-10, and he looked to be setup for a good finish before a penalty on the final pit stop shuffled him to the back of the field and  a subsequent  a 25th place finish.

Larson at Bristol: Larson will be making his third start at BMS this weekend, where he had finishes of 10th and 12th last season. The 10th place finish in last year’s spring race was Larson’s first ever top-10 in the NSCS. Larson has also raced at Bristol on four occasions in the NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS), scoring one pole award and three top-five finishes.

Consistent Qualifier: For the last six consecutive races, Larson has advanced to the final round of qualifying. Larson is one of only three drivers, Brad Keselowski and Ryan Newman being the others, to have made the third and final round at each race in that span. Larson’s consistency has earned him an average starting position of 11.
