Overtime Accident Results in 23rd-Place Finish for Biffle at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (September 10, 2016) – Greg Biffle made his 500th Sprint Cup Series start Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway. Biffle had a solid top-10 finish in his sights until contact on the final green-white-checkered finish damaged his No. 16 Ford EcoBoost Ford and cost him valuable track position. Despite spinning, Biffle was able to keep going to cross the finish line 23rd.

Biffle made his Sprint Cup debut in 2002 at California driving for Jack Roush. Over his 15 years in the series he has earned 19 wins, 92 top-five and 175 top 10 finishes. Biffle looked to add to his win total Saturday night but it wasn’t meant to be.

From his 28th starting position, Biffle slowly began to make up positions on the track all while battling a loose handling Ford that didn’t want to turn. Just before the halfway mark, Biffle went a lap down to the leaders while searching for turn but was in position to be the “lucky dog” recipient when the caution was displayed at the halfway mark for an accident on the track.

The race turned into a battle of fresh tires verse old, as different pit strategies unfolded. Biffle gave up his 15th position to pit for his final set of sticker tires, setting himself up 26th with 50 laps to go.

The ending of the race saw a record number of cautions and Biffle was able to make up ground with the fresher tires and gain track position as others pitted. Biffle took the final green-white-checkered flag in the ninth position, but contact on the track got him out of line and cost him multiple positions. Biffle was able to hang on to his Ford EcoBoost Ford to finish 23rd at Richmond.
