HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (August 11, 2014) – Ryan Truex and the No. 83 Burger King / Dr Pepper Toyota Camry team finished 39th at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International on Sunday afternoon. After racing inside the top-20 early in the event, Truex fought a broken track bar late in the race and was relegated to a 39th-place finish.
Truex rolled off 35th for his first Sprint Cup Series event at the high-speed 2.45-mile road course. Despite lacking rear grip from the time the green flag dropped, Truex was able to work closely with his team to adjust their car during early pit stops. The Sunoco Rookie contender set a solid pace to secure a position inside the top-20 by lap 30, and remained on the lead lap of competition throughout most of the day.
However, as the laps ticked by, Truex began to feel something amiss in the rear end of his racecar. While he was able to fight through the issue for several laps, the rookie fell through the field and lost valuable track position. The BK Racing team was eventually able to diagnose the problem as a broken track bar, and Truex was scored with a 39th-place finish.
“We had a great run going today in our Burger King / Dr Pepper Toyota Camry, so I’m a little disappointed with how we finished,” commented Truex. “I’m proud of the effort of my guys-they built us a really strong car for today’s race. With the speed you carry around this track, and all the turns and bumps and elevation changes-it can be tough on equipment. There was nothing that we could have done to prevent a broken track bar, and sometimes these things just happen. We’ll continue to focus on the races ahead of us, and getting better each week. I’m really looking forward to getting back to Michigan International Speedway next week.”
Next weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will return to Michigan International Speedway for the second time this season. On Friday, August 15, FOX Sports 1 will cover practice (12 p.m. EDT) and qualifying (4:30 p.m. EDT). ESPN2 will cover practice from the two-mile Michigan International Speedway at 8:30 a.m. EDT on Saturday, August 16. The Pure Michigan 400 will be broadcast on ESPN, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio at 1 p.m. EDT on Sunday, August 17.
