Ryan Reed persevered at Watkins Glen to earn an eight-place finish in his No. 16 Drive Down A1C Lilly Diabetes Ford. With no practice time on Friday due to rain, Reed hit the track for qualifying and struggled for rear grip. Reed started the race 19th, held his ground during a rainstorm and by the end was running his fastest laps of the race.
DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Ground Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing - Qualifying Position: 1st - Take us through your lap, Denny. “Yeah, it was a great run for our team. We kept getting better every run and really I think it helped us that we qualified the same day we practiced. It gave us an opportunity to get in rhythm. On these road courses, we’ve been really fast. We just have not qualified well and that’s really put us at a disadvantage early. Now that we’re upfront, we can play our strategy like the way it’s supposed to be played and hopefully have a great day tomorrow.”
Camry driver Ryan Preece scored his first top-10 finish at a road course in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS), after placing fourth at Watkins Glen International on Saturday afternoon.
JOEY LOGANO, No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford Fusion – “We didn’t have the speed to get the pole, but I just didn’t go fast enough the last one. Overall, we pressed as hard as we could today. We made our car better and it’s got short-run speed, but it just falls off. Hopefully, we made the right changes for the race.”
CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 SUNENERGY 1 CAMARO ZL1 – Qualified 3rd - A STRONG RUN. SEEMS LIKE IT WAS LOST JUST IN THAT LAST CORNER? “Yeah, maybe. I don’t know. I’m not sure. It’s very frustrating. I feel like I had a real opportunity to grab a pole today. I felt like I had a good lap going and then I got a little loose out of Turn 11 and thought I could stay in it and just thought I didn’t have any more room. It was pretty close. That sucks. I just hate to be that close. We haven’t been qualifying real good. It would have been nice to have gotten one today.”
GMS Racing officials announced today that veteran driver, Bill Elliott will drive the No. 23 ISM Connect Chevrolet Camaro at Road America in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) Johnsonville 180.
JOEY LOGANO, No. 22 Snap-On Ford Mustang – PRESS CONFERENCE – WHAT’S THE STORY ABOUT NOT BEING IN THE 22 THIS YEAR? “I drive the car they tell me to drive (laughing). I don’t know, we wanted to switch and see what was going on, so we switched. The thing is I didn’t really switch because Wilson was the crew chief last year when we won, so I was like, ‘OK, let’s switch. We’re on the same team.’ I don’t know. We just did, but it was a good car. They both were good cars. They’re both great teams. The pit crew on both cars are Cup teams when we come to the road course here with the pit stops backwards, so we do that to get some experience for our guys, but, really, I guess probably the advantage is to the 12 because they don’t race for stages and we’ve got to race for stage points, so it was probably maybe a little advantage there. It comes down to the end of it like the last few years it seems like it’s the two of us battling it out like crazy. I was working as hard as I can there. It was a fun battle. These XFINITY cars have a really good package around this race track for some racing because there’s just enough draft to keep the leader from pulling away.”

What means more going into this weekend, your third-place finish here last year or your second-place finish last week? “Definitely a good place for my race team. Last year we had a lot of fun racing here in The Glen and obviously I have a – I feel like the race team has good momentum from last week. It had been a little bit rough before that, but I feel like you are as good as your last race, so right now we are as good as our last race and our last race was pretty good. We have to build on that and try to keep the momentum up for this weekend and try to take advantage of it.”
