Ford Performance NASCAR: Atlanta Notes

NASCAR’s annual visit to suburban Atlanta is on tap this weekend as all three major touring series compete at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Atlanta in their own words: A driver’s favorite track

With all three of NASCAR’s national touring series set to descend on Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 weekend just days from now, drivers looking ahead to the races have described AMS in many different ways. Fast, abrasive, slick, aged, fun, wild and even mean are just a handful of the adjectives that have been uttered by drivers about historic 1.54-mile race track. In a yearbook of race tracks, AMS might sweep the superlatives page for most character, most dramatic and certainly, most popular.

AJ ALLMENDINGER, JTG DAUGHERTY RACING, ATLANTA MOTOR SPEEDWAY PREVIEW

Atlanta: “Atlanta is fun,” Allmendinger said. “I’ve always enjoyed it and it’s one of my most favorite mile-and-a-half tracks. I love that it is slick. I love that it is worn-out pavement. To me, it’s just a fun place to race our No. 47 Kroger/SCOTT Products Chevrolet SS. With the low downforce package, I think you are going to be just sliding around a lot more. It will be kind of based off of what tire Goodyear brings. If it’s a soft tire that’s got a lot of speed initially, it’s really going to wear off. If it’s a little bit harder, maybe it doesn’t fall off as much.”

The Final Word – Daytona was a tale of two lane blacktop, at least for the final lap

“Stay on the bottom, stay in line, and they can’t pass us.” For 199 laps, Darrell Waltrip’s observation of the 2016 Daytona 500 was dead on. Then, it became dead wrong.
