APRIL 27, 2024

ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1, met with the media in advance of the NASCAR Cup Series practice and qualifying session at Dover Motor Speedway. Tomorrow’s WÜRTH 400 will mark Bowman’s 300th career NASCAR Cup Series start.

Media Availability Quotes:

OBVIOUSLY YOU MISSED THE RACE HERE AT DOVER MOTOR SPEEDWAY LAST YEAR DUE TO INJURY. HOW EXCITED ARE YOU TO BE BACK AT A TRACK THAT YOU’VE HAD SO MUCH SUCCESS AT IN THE CUP SERIES?

“Yeah, for sure. I think this is always one that I’ve had circled. I was excited last year to get to come here again and obviously that didn’t pan out. But yeah, really, this is my favorite racetrack that we go to. I struggled greatly here for a long time, and then got to be teammates with Jimmie Johnson for a couple of years and honestly have been pretty successful ever since a conversation we had in 2019. So yeah, really excited to get back here, and hopefully we unload fast and are a threat for the win tomorrow.”

SPEAKING OF THAT, YOU MENTIONED ‘CIRCLE THE CALENDAR’ KIND OF TRACK – YOU HEAR THAT IN SPORTS ALL THE TIME ABOUT HOW MUCH SUCCESS YOU HAVE AT THIS PARTICULAR EVENT. FOR A DRIVER THAT’S STILL TRYING TO SEARCH FOR THAT FIRST WIN AND CLINCH A PLAYOFF SPOT, HOW MUCH MERIT DOES THAT ‘CIRCLE THE CALENDAR’ SAYING HAVE AT THIS TRACK?

“Yeah, I mean I think it’s just a place where I enjoy going to. I feel like I bring a little something to the table and know what I want and know what I need in my race car to be successful here. But at the same time, we’re all-in every weekend, right? We’re ten-tenths every weekend trying to get back into victory lane. This is just a place where I feel like maybe it’s a little more natural or maybe I have a better idea of exactly what I need to be successful. I can say that all I want, and we can unload and struggle this weekend, but I feel like it’s a place that I’m pretty confident going to.”

YOU TALK ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU LIKE THIS TRACK. YOU’VE HAD PREVIOUS SUCCESS HERE IN THE PREVIOUS GENERATION CAR AND THIS GENERATION CAR, SO HOW DOES THAT TRANSFER OVER FROM ONE STYLE OF CAR TO ANOTHER, THAT YOU’RE STILL ABLE TO HAVE THOSE TOP FINISHES?

“Yeah, I mean I think in 2022 when we came here, I was pretty uncertain on how everything from the previous generation car was going to apply. I feel like, obviously race car things don’t apply, but some of just the fundamentals of ways to get around this place and ways to race well here still works. So yeah, I mean we had a shot to win here in 2022 with the Next Gen car, as well. It didn’t work out, but we had a good, solid day.

I feel like there’s still things that, as far as how I approach it, that pay off in both cars.”

YOU HAVE A WIN HERE AT DOVER MOTOR SPEEDWAY IN 2021. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE EMOTIONS COMING TO DOVER AND JUST KNOWING THAT YOU’RE DRIVING THE NO. 48 AND HOW MUCH SUCCESS THIS TEAM HAS HAD OVER THE YEARS WITH JIMMIE JOHNSON?

“Yeah, for sure. I attribute a lot of my success here to Jimmie (Johnson), as well. Yeah, definitely a special place for the No. 48 car. When you think of kind of the dominance that team had kind of throughout that whole era, this is a place that comes to top of mind. So, it’s super cool to have also been successful here in the No. 48 car, but yeah I think even my own successes here, I definitely attribute to him, as well.”

YOU’VE HAD SUCCESS AT KANSAS SPEEDWAY. IN THE PAST, WE’VE TALKED ABOUT SINCE YOUR FAMILY KIND OF CAME FROM THAT NECK OF THE WOODS, YOU REALLY LIKE TO RUN WELL THERE. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THAT TRACK THAT YOU THINK SHOWS OFF YOUR STYLE?

“Yeah, I mean I think that was one of the first immediate tracks I got to race at way back in ARCA, so I got a lot of laps there. Yeah, for whatever reason, just was kind of naturally pretty successful there off the bat, even in the Cup car. Obviously we haven’t won there, but we’ve had a lot of good days there. So, looking forward to getting there, as well. I think these two weeks are a fun two weeks for me. It’s two racetracks that I really like going to, so hopefully we’re a threat there next weekend, as well.”

Force Sets Track Record with 10th Quickest Funny Car Run Ever in Friday Qualifying at NHRA 4-Wide Nationals

Sixteen-time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force sets the record with a 3.820-second pass – the 10th quickest in the history of the category – in the second round of NHRA 4-Wide Nationals qualifying. (CMS/HHP photo)
  • Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel) earned provisional No. 1 qualifiers in the opening night at zMAX Dragway
  • Tickets for Saturday’s final two qualifying sessions and Sunday’s eliminations for the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals action are available at charlottemotorspeedway.com

CONCORD, NC (April 26, 2024) — Sixteen-time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force continues to rewrite the record books, including a new track record at zMAX Dragway, during Friday night’s qualifying at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals. With a lightning-fast 3.820-second pass – the quickest ever at the Bellagio of drag strips and the 10th quickest in the history of the category – Force earned the provisional No. 1 qualifier on the first of three days of nitro-fueled action.

“I’m having a lot of fun going down the race track,” said Force, who earned his 156th career victory earlier this year at Pomona. “Luck’s a big part of this game. I’ve been lucky my whole career, and I ain’t done yet.”

Force, a three-time winner at the Charlotte four-wide event, joined Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and the last fall’s Carolina Nationals winner Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel) in earning top honors on Friday.

Kalitta, who ran a 3.691-second pass at 337.92 mph to outpace the Top Fuel field, said tomorrow’s weather could require his team needs to run even faster to hold on to the top spot in Sunday’s elimination bracket.

“The temperatures are going to be pretty good for running good,” Kalitta said. “I think we’re going to have to run a little stronger to hold on to what we got, especially with what John Force did. It sounds like he really had a hell of a run. The track’s good and the conditions should be good for tomorrow too to run better, so we’re not going to get too comfortable here.”

Anderson, who ran 6.500 seconds at 210.90 mph, managed to claim the top spot in Pro Stock despite only making one of two qualifying runs on Friday night. His second qualifying pass was cut short after a computer malfunction caused the car to shut off prematurely.

“Q1 was great,” he joked. “It was a very nice run. When you get conditions like this, when you don’t get sun beating down on the race track and it’s cool – it’s 65, 70 degrees out there – that’s what these Pro Stock cars love. You’ve gotta be prepared when you come up there. You can’t be shy, because all the cars are going to run fast.”

Despite setting the pace in the Pro Stock Motorcycle category, Smith said he thinks his team has what he needs to improve on his Friday night run of 6.685 seconds at 201.61 mph.

“All in all, I think we can go faster,” Smith said. “If they think they can go faster, I think we can too. We’ll see. It’s a chess match. This Denso bike is running mean right now.

J. FORCE, KALITTA, ANDERSON AND M. SMITH RACE TO PROVISIONAL NO. 1 SPOTS AT NHRA 4-WIDE NATIONALS IN CHARLOTTE

CONCORD, N.C. (April 26, 2024) – Funny Car legend John Force set a new zMAX Dragway track record on Friday, powering to the provisional No. 1 spot at the 14th annual NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte.

Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are also the provisional No. 1 qualifiers at the fifth of 20 races during the 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season.

In the final Funny Car quad of the night, Force went an impressive 3.820-seconds at 330.96 mph in his 11,000-horsepower PEAK Performance Chevrolet Camaro SS, setting a track record previously set by teammate Robert Hight last September. If that holds, Force, who won the Winternationals earlier this year in Phoenix, would pick up his 167th career No. 1 qualifier and first in 2024. It’s been a strong season thus far for Force, who looks to pick up his fifth career victory at zMAX Dragway this weekend after making the 10th-quickest run in Funny Car history on Friday.

“It ran .89 the run before and they said they were going to lean on it because conditions were getting better,” Force said. “They leaned on it and ‘Hang on,’ and it ran quicker than they thought. It moved on me and I thought I was going to lose it, but I feel really good about it and we’re looking forward to tomorrow.

“I’m having a lot of fun going down the track. I’m here and I’ve got a bad hot rod right now. Luck is a big part of this game and I’m not done yet.”

Bob Tasca, who won the 4-Wide Nationals in Las Vegas two weeks ago, is currently second after going 3.849 at 335.32 and Alexis DeJoria went 3.859 at 331.69 to move into third. Ron Capps went 335.40 earlier in the day to set the track speed record.

Two weeks after winning his first career four-wide race, reigning Top Fuel world champion Doug Kalitta enjoyed a terrific start on Friday in Charlotte, making the quickest run in each session, including a 3.691 at 337.92 in his 11,000-horsepower Mac Tools dragster to close out the evening. The run also puts Kalitta in position to pick up his second straight No. 1 qualifier and 55th in his career, as he continues to ride an impressive wave of momentum. He was the quickest in each round of eliminations in Las Vegas to take the four-wide victory for the first time and Kalitta seemed to pick up right where he left off two weeks ago.

“This is exciting for all my guys. AJ [crew chief Alan Johnson] looked happy, and it’s always good to keep him happy,” Kalitta said. “The guys are working their tails off and it shows. The car left strong and stayed straight. I’ve run this car for a couple of races. This is a new chassis and it drives really nice — right down the middle of the track.”

Antron Brown moved to second with his night run of 3.698 at 332.18 and Billy Torrence’s 3.716 at 329.34 has him third heading into Saturday.

Racing close to the KB Titan Racing team shop, Pro Stock’s Greg Anderson delivered an impressive run to kick off the weekend in his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro, going 6.500 at 210.90 to take the provisional top spot. It puts the veteran and Pro Stock’s winningest driver in line for his first No. 1 qualifier of the season and the 125th in his fantastic career. The season has started well for Anderson, a 104-time event winner, and he’s currently third in points. After winning the Lucas Oil Winternationals, Anderson and his team wants to keep building as he seeks his first Charlotte 4-Wide victory since 2012.

“Our run in Q1 was great,” Anderson said. “When you get conditions like this where it’s cool, that’s what Pro Stock cars love. You’ve got to come prepared. You can’t be shy. You’ve got to run what you brung and we used everything we brought. The track is great and it held everything.

“Tonight [Q2] we had a computer problem and I’m still not sure what it was. I hope that’s it for the weekend as far as bad luck. I’m shocked that no one was able to get around me. Tomorrow should be good and I figure we’ll have to improve to keep it.”

Cristian Cuadra, who ran as part of a “Cuadra Quad” in the second qualifying session with his brothers, Fernando Jr. and David, and his father, Fernando, is currently second with a 6.507 at 210.18. Aaron Stanfield’s 6.508 at 209.92 puts him third after the first day.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle’s first race back since the season-opener in Gainesville, six-time world champ Matt Smith made a strong opening statement on Friday, blistering the track record with a standout run of 6.685 at 201.61 on his Denso Auto Parts Buell. It was a stellar performance at his home track and puts the veteran in line for his first No. 1 qualifier since 2022 and the 53rd in career. If Smith stays on top, it will be the first top qualifier for anyone other than Gaige Herrera since last July as well. It was exactly the type of performance Smith was after on Friday, setting a career-best in the process and making his first career run in the 6.60s.

“We’ve done a lot of testing since Gainesville,” Smith said. “We’ve been to three different tracks four times and made a lot of runs. We gained a lot but it didn’t show today. I was shaking the tire through low gear, so we’re not reaping the benefits of testing. I know there is more there, maybe a 6.66 or 6.65. Gaige went 6.69, so we’re right there with him. If we’re running within two or three hundredths of the fastest bike, we have a shot.

“Tomorrow is the Mission [#2Fast2Tasty] Challenge and we want to get the points and the money. I think we can run faster. This bike is mean.”

Herrera jumped to the second spot under the lights with a run of 6.696 at 201.79 and LE Tonglet grabbed the third position thanks to a run of 6.703 at 200.77.

Qualifying continues at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte.

The overall and Porsche-class winner was regular HSR victory lane visitor Todd Treffert who topped the 40-plus car field with another victory in his 901 Shop 1972 No. 14 Porsche 911 IROC.

Treffert was joined on the overall podium in third by American-division winner Alan Sevadjian who stepped into the 1968 No. 37 Duntov Motor Company Corvette roadster regularly driven by his teammate and fellow HSR race winner Clair Schwendeman.

Steve Cullman put in a competitive drive to third overall and second in the American class in his 1970 No. 74 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Trans-Am car prepared by Olthoff Racing.

This year’s featured marque at the 46th HSR Mitty is “The Cars of Japan” and a pair of quick 240Z competitors began the weekend’s celebration with podium finishes in Friday’s Sasco Sports race.

Chris Zappa finished a solid sixth overall and won the International class race in the 1972 No. 44 Datsun 240Z and was joined in victory lane by fellow “Z” car competitor Scott Kissinger, who finished third in his 1971 No. 202 Datsun 240Z.

General Tire 150: Zilisch triumphs for first ARCA Menards Series victory

Top speeds. Tough crashes. Triumphant winner.

Just another top start to a NASCAR weekend at the Monster Mile.

Driving the No. 28 Chevrolet for Pinnacle Racing Group, 17-year-old Connor Zilisch notched his first career ARCA victory in the General Tire 150 ARCA Menards Series race Friday at Dover Motor Speedway.

“Those first 70 laps, I was pretty intimidated,” said Zilisch, who is a development driver for Trackhouse Racing. “I just needed to get on the gas. This isn’t the easiest place to make your oval debut. To come here and not only run all the laps but get a win is exciting. These are the places I feel like I need to get better at.

“I couldn’t make any ground [for a while]. The restarts were hectic, but we kept it together. I feel like our preparation is paying off.”

Giovanni Ruggiero, first in the ARCA East standings, placed second (0.986 second behind Zilisch) in the joint ARCA Menards Series/East race. Carson Kvapil was third, Lavar Scott came in fourth and Andres Perez (ARCA Series leader) was fifth.

William Sawalich, who set a qualifying record earlier Friday and led a race-high 67 laps, spun exiting Turn 3 late in the race following a bump from Zilisch. Zilisch took over the lead from there.

“I definitely think I made a mistake there,” said Zilisch, who led 42 laps. “I do think I could have done something differently there to keep him in the race. I got a little tight and I got up into him. I will apologize to him.”

Midway through, on Lap 75, big hits seconds apart against the wall from Christian Rose (exiting Turn 4) and Amber Balcaen (along the frontstretch) brought out the red flag to pause the race. Balcaen suffered a foot injury in the crash.

“Not really sure what happened – [the car] just went straight on me,” Rose said. “It was a big hit. They call this place ‘The Monster’ for a reason.”

Zilisch averaged 98.210 mph across 150 laps in one hour, 31 minutes, 58 seconds to claim the checkered flag. Eight of the 24 drivers who started the race finished on the lead lap. Eight caution periods took up 52 laps.

The Monster Mile’s remaining race schedule this week includes:

Saturday, April 27: BetRivers 200 NASCAR Xfinity Series Dash 4 Cash race (1:30 p.m., FS1, PRN, SiriusXM)
Sunday, April 28: Würth 400 NASCAR Cup Series race (2 p.m., FS1, PRN, SiriusXM)

Experience the Speed: Why Racing Posters Are a Must-Have Décor

Imagine the rush of adrenaline as sleek cars zoom around the track, leaving a trail of excitement in their wake. Racing posters capture this exhilarating atmosphere, bringing the thrill of the race directly into your living or working environment. You can even create a poster for free in minutes. Whether you’re a devoted motorsports fan or appreciate the intensity of high-speed competition, these posters will ignite your passion.

But racing posters offer more than just visual appeal; they serve as a testament to human ingenuity and innovation. Each design encapsulates the spirit of technological advancement and the pursuit of excellence. From classic Formula 1 races to modern endurance challenges, these posters celebrate the achievements of drivers, teams, and the automotive industry as a whole.

Experience the Speed: Choosing the Perfect Racing Poster

Selecting the right racing poster is essential to achieving the desired impact in your space. Consider the following factors to ensure that your choice aligns with your aesthetic preferences and design goals:

  1. Theme and Style: Determine the theme or style you wish to convey. Are you drawn to vintage racing posters with retro charm, or do you prefer contemporary designs featuring cutting-edge graphics? Identifying your preferred aesthetic will guide your selection process.
  2. Size and Placement: Assess the dimensions of the wall space where you intend to display your poster. Choose a size that complements the area without overwhelming it. Additionally, consider the viewing distance and sightlines to ensure optimal visibility from various vantage points.
  3. Color Palette: Pay attention to the color palette of the poster and how it harmonizes with your existing décor. Whether you opt for vibrant hues or muted tones, aim for coherence and balance within the overall color scheme of the room.
  4. Subject Matter: Reflect on your personal interests and passions when selecting the subject matter of the poster. Whether you’re captivated by iconic racing circuits, legendary drivers, or specific racing events, choose a design that resonates with you on a deeper level.

Accelerate Your Style: Incorporating Racing Posters into Your Décor

Once you’ve chosen the perfect racing poster, it’s time to integrate it seamlessly into your interior design scheme. Here are some creative ways to incorporate racing posters into your décor:

  1. Feature Wall: Make a bold statement by dedicating an entire wall to your chosen racing poster. Opt for a focal point in the room, such as above a sofa or fireplace, to draw attention and anchor the space.
  2. Gallery Display: Create a curated gallery display by arranging multiple racing posters in a grid or asymmetrical layout. Experiment with different sizes and orientations to add visual interest and depth to the arrangement.
  3. Thematic Accents: Enhance the racing theme by incorporating complementary accents and accessories throughout the room. Consider adding racing memorabilia, automotive-inspired furnishings, or vintage racing helmets to amplify the ambiance.
  4. Custom Framing: Elevate the presentation of your racing poster with custom framing that complements its style and aesthetic. Choose a frame finish and matting that enhance the artwork while protecting it from damage.

In conclusion, racing posters offer a dynamic and visually compelling way to elevate your interior design. Whether you’re a devoted fan of motorsports or simply appreciate the adrenaline-fueled excitement of the race, these posters are sure to rev up your walls and ignite your passion for speed and competition. WHAT THEY’RE SAYING (Quotes):

Pato O’Ward, No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“I love driving around this place. It’s a track I really enjoy and always have. It’s high-commitment. We’re just going to try to get the car a little bit better for tomorrow and see if we can get it done in qualifying.”

Théo Pourchaire, No. 6 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“It was a smooth session. What was most important for me was to get as many laps as possible to learn the track and the car in those conditions. Everything is different from Long Beach, as the track here is very smooth with very high speeds. I need to learn the downforce and the limit of the car in those high-speed corners. Overall, I am satisfied. I had quite a bit of traffic on my alternate lap, and in the end, I think we would have been further up in the standings. It is a good start, but I need to continue building confidence. It should be a good weekend, as the car is great and Pato (O’Ward) showed we can be quite strong here.”

Alexander Rossi, No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“That was a challenging session, and I don’t think we’re quite in the window yet. We need to look at what we are doing and how we can get things back to where we were at last month’s test. Not the way we wanted kick off the weekend, but we’ll focus on a stronger Practice 2 and qualifying.”

Gavin Ward, Team Principal at Arrow McLaren:

“We had a mixed bag today. Pato (O’Ward) got off to a good start here. He’s got the pace, and it’s a good reference for the other two cars to look at, which I think we’ve got a bit more to find. Alexander (Rossi) is not feeling really comfortable today, but I’ve got no doubt we’ve got the best people to figure that one out overnight. He sure knows how to drive an INDYCAR, so he should be alright tomorrow. This is definitely a different challenge than Long Beach for Théo (Pourchaire), and it’s a steep learning curve here to get confidence in the high speed and all that, but he’s building up to it once again, and there’s a bit we can do to help him get comfy. We’ll look for a decent step up overnight.”

Agustin Canapino, No. 78 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet:

“First practice here in Barber for the start of the weekend. We are P16. We had a few challenges in this session. I had a mistake, and we tried some different setups. I think it’s a good start but we can do a better job tomorrow.”

Josef Newgarden, No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet:

“It doesn’t really mean anything yet. We’ve to get through qualifying, and mostly get to the race. I’m excited to be back here. I always feel good to be with the No. 2 PPG Chevy car crew. They’ve done a great job coming into here. They’re ready. I feel kind of ready. I want to be more ready. We just need to come and do our jobs.”

Scott McLaughlin, No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet:

“Good day. Pretty good day. Car feels alright. I think we’re a little shy on aero balance. Once we cram that into the No. 3 Good Ranchers Chevy, we’ll be just fine.”

Will Power, No. 12 Team Penske Chevrolet:

“A very solid day to start the weekend here at Barber. We continue to have speed in the Verizon Chevy, and this is a place where we have been very successful as a team. The biggest thing here is to have trust in your car because you have to be committed each and every lap. I love racing here and looking for good things the rest of the weekend.”

ROMAIN GROSJEAN, NO. 77 JUNCOS HOLLINGER RACING CHEVROLET – First Practice Press Conference Transcript:

THE MODERATOR: Joining us, Romain Grosjean. Pole and podium here a year ago. Top 10 finish here, P1. Lead us off with your thoughts on practice today.

ROMAIN GROSJEAN: It went really well. Obviously it’s a hot day. I was surprised how good the car was from run one. I think we improved on run two. P1 on blacks. I thought we had a really good lap going on reds, like a lot of guys. I ended up with traffic on my (indiscernible) first laps. Came back in, made a quick change, came back out, did my fastest lap.

I’m happy with the car based on Friday. I think tomorrow and Sunday, things going to change again. I must say I’m impressed with the way the team works, the way the team works through the weekend. We know what we have. We know what we don’t have. I think I appreciate that. It seems to be working pretty well on track.

THE MODERATOR: Continue with questions.

Q. Romain, looked like you had a little bit of a tense moment towards the end of the session.

ROMAIN GROSJEAN: First of all, I went to apologize first thing after the session. It was on me. It was the fourth lap in a row that I got blocked. I did the French move that I was complaining, but I couldn’t turn the wheel with one hand. We actually made contact, which I feel a bit embarrassed about it, but it’s the honest true. Even Alexander Rossi wouldn’t believe me, but it’s the truth.

I wanted to push him a bit wide, showing I was not happy, but I never wanted to make contact. I just couldn’t turn the wheel. So I went to apologize.

I think everyone got blocked. It’s just Barber. It’s probably the most physical track of the season. It’s very hot. We’re pushing the limits on the car. High-speed corners.

Yeah, I’m not very proud of that moment, but I’m much more proud of our session generally.

Q. The small team thing. Do you feel like you’re raising the boat here? Are you progressing?

ROMAIN GROSJEAN: Yeah, it is a small team, as Dale Coyne was back in 2021. I think that’s the beauty of INDYCAR: you can be on pole in a small team and you can be on a podium in a small team. For the championship at the end, it’s always the big team, always Ganassi that wins the championship.

But yes, for sure it’s the beauty of the sport, the beauty of INDYCAR. The car quite is simple. Apart from the dampers, the rest, everyone has been here for the chassis, 11, 12 years old.

ROMAIN GROSJEAN: Everyone knows the chassis very well. Every engineer has been on another team once. At the end everything turns around. We have one engineer from Rahal last year.

ROMAIN GROSJEAN: Squirrel. They have the damper guy from Andretti from start of 2023. It just goes around, comes around, but it’s good.

Q. You’ve done very well here in the past. You race very well here. What is about this track that suits your style so well?

ROMAIN GROSJEAN: I’ve got no clue. Bit of courage maybe. I like it. I was out there today pushing it, having fun. Yeah, I mean, most of the tracks we’ve done well. I think it’s just that here for some reason it showed up more.

I think last year, of course being on pole is pretty good. The car worked really well. There were a couple places last year we could have done very well.

I think in 2022, when I joined my previous team from Dale Coyne, we had pole and P3 in Indy GP, P2 twice, never was on the podium for the last two years out of four races.

I think the car behaves how you get there. I think I have also more experience in INDYCAR that I’m able to know exactly what I want from the car.

Is funny to see. We just mentioned they’re the same car, but they’re set up different team to team. How the cars behave differently is quite funny.

Today was very competitive. Yeah, I don’t know. First time I came here, I wasn’t so fast. It’s not like it was my best track.

Q. There was a kid last Sunday that made his first INDYCAR race that said he grew up watching you race in Formula 1. Theo said you talked to him before the race and said this that is a great place for you to race. Could you maybe talk about how this kid adapted as fast as he did and how INDYCAR is becoming a destination series for young talent like that.

ROMAIN GROSJEAN: Yeah, I think INDYCAR is a great championship. Off course a lot of drivers, young drivers, wants to go to Formula 1. It’s still the pinnacle, is the highest media, highest paid, highest sponsor, everything you want in the world.

But I think you also have to realize it’s only 20 drivers in the world that make it to Formula 1, and are going to stay there for 10 years, 15 years, 20 years for Fernando. That means for those years, there’s no room for anyone else. I think you have to look somewhere else.

If you accept the fact that when you come to the U.S., INDYCAR you can actually really have a good career. You’re not going to make it to Formula 1, but you can be Scott Dixon, six-time champion, have an amazing career. If you accept that fact early on, you can come over and do it.

I think Christian Lundgaard did that well, realized there was probably no room for him in Formula 1 and came over, is doing a great job out here, is having a great life, having great fun in INDYCAR. It’s super competitive.

I think with everything we see, the 100 Days to Indy be on Netflix, we can have more and more fans. You see St. Pete, Long Beach. 200,000 sponsors. Monaco doesn’t have that. It’s a bit of a different setup, it’s hard to fit people. I think in that way we can do great.

The recipe is quite simple: bring the track to a nice place where you can bring the family, everyone is having a good weekend, a big city, then you’re going to have fans. If we have fans, we’re going to have more viewership. If we have more viewership, we are going to have more sponsors. If we have more sponsors, we will have better paid driver, and then it becomes packed like when the CART was here.

Like a series don’t really look like a Plan B, but it’s almost like a Plan A, if you’re never enough you’re not going to make it to Formula 1. Maybe you don’t want to make it to Formula 1.

Q. When you look at so many drivers’ careers who have nowhere to go, Formula 1, like Scott Dixon, when you’ve got guys like Lewis Hamilton that have won their championships, Max, you look at the guys over here, how do you evaluate greatness?

ROMAIN GROSJEAN: It’s funny, I was asked recently, What is success? I said, Well, that’s complicated. We all have a different scale of success. We all have different values.

I think if you look at Scott Dixon, if we look at Kristensen, Monsieur Le Mans, we look at their career, we can say it’s successful. Did they make it to Formula 1? No. But is it all about Formula 1 or is it all about winning? Is it just being on the grid in Formula 1 or is it about winning somewhere elsewhere? Maybe, yes, it’s not as high level, even though I don’t like putting it that way. It’s not media value as Formula 1. It’s still a competition.

There’s still great drivers out here. Still very complicated. We come from Long Beach, which is a street course, straight Barber, a very fast road course, then the month of May where we are on the speedway, then you go to Iowa, short ovals, different driving styles. Then the same thing in endurance, Le Mans, Sebring, Daytona. Those races are very hard.

It’s all depend right place, right time, opportunity, being clever. My career, I almost went to DTM back in 2010. I would never have made it back to Formula 1. It was one fun call where I decided I was going to risk it one more time to go back to DP2 back in the day, Formula 2, see if I was going to make it to Formula 1 or not. That day I could sign in DTM or try to make no money and go again in Formula 2, see what was coming. Those moments in life are very important. They’re choices. They have consequences behind.

It worked really well for me. I’m very lucky. I touch wood that I made it back to Formula 1. It could also be I try Formula 2, it would not work. What else? I would probably be a cook somewhere in a cuisine. Maybe in Alabama, not doing chicken waffle, though.

Yeah, it’s right place, right time, making that last call, which is key for the rest of your career.

Newgarden Finds Peace by Setting Pace in Barber Practice

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Friday, April 26, 2024) – After a tumultuous week for himself and Team Penske, Josef Newgarden said Friday morning he couldn’t wait to strap back into his race car at Barber Motorsports Park.

It showed.

Two-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Newgarden led practice Friday for the Children’s of Alabama Indy Grand Prix powered by AmFirst with a top lap of 1 minute, 6.7045 seconds in the No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet. The strong performance came just hours after Newgarden participated in an emotional press conference in which he offered his first public comments after he and teammate Scott McLaughlin were disqualified from the season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding for illegal use of the series’ Push to Pass system.

The quick lap on Firestone Firehawk alternate tires at Barber came despite Newgarden spinning off track in Turn 15 early in the 75-minute session after running wide, triggering a red flag. The car didn’t make any contact and continued.

“It’s definitely the best medicine in the world for someone like me,” Newgarden said. “It’s great to be out here, just getting to turn laps. I was a little bit off my game in the beginning, for sure. I dropped a wheel and made a mistake and threw away a set of tires, which was unfortunate.

“We just kept going. We came up with a new plan, and I think the positive thing is the car was really fast, even when I made the mistake.”

Pato O’Ward, who inherited the St. Petersburg victory Wednesday after Newgarden was disqualified, ended up second today at 1:06.7875 in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. Like Newgarden, O’Ward went off track during the session while exploring the limits of grip but also made no contact.

Two-time series champion Will Power, who didn’t use Push to Pass illegally at St. Petersburg but was docked 10 points as part of the penalty for having override programing code on the car, was third at 1:06.7914 in the No. 12 Verizon Business Team Penske Chevrolet.

Colton Herta was fourth at 1:06.8002 in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda fielded by Andretti Global, while Christian Lundgaard rounded out the top five at 1:06.8972 in the No. 45 Hy-Vee Honda of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

Defending Barber race winner McLaughlin, who expressed a similar desire today to find peace in his car like Newgarden, ended up ninth at 1:07.0935 in the No. 3 Good Ranchers Team Penske Chevrolet.

Christian Rasmussen was the quickest of the six rookies in the field this weekend, 13th overall at 1:07.4418 in the No. 20 Guy Care Chevrolet fielded by Ed Carpenter Racing.

Up next is practice at 12:15 p.m. ET Saturday on the 17-turn, 2.3-mile natural road course, followed by NTT P1 Award qualifying at 3:30 p.m. Competition should be taut for the pole, as less than one second separated the top 19 drivers in the 27-car field in practice Friday.

Live coverage of the 90-lap race starts at 1 p.m. ET Sunday on NBC, Peacock, INDYCAR LIVE and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

Abel Gets Big Jump on Field in Barber Practice

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Friday, April 26, 2024) – Jacob Abel led the opening practice Friday for the INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park, with an uncommon margin of dominance for the INDYCAR development series.

Abel led the 21-driver field with a top lap of 1 minute, 11.9990 seconds in the No. 51 Abel Construction entry. He was more than a half-second quicker than his closest pursuer, fellow series veteran James Roe of Andretti Global, who ended up second at 1:12.5148 in the No. 29 TopCon car.

The big gap by Abel over the field was even more impressive considering he turned his best lap on his final trip around the 17-turn, 2.3-mile natural road course on used Firestone Firehawk tires.

“It’s fantastic,” Abel said. “Basically after St. Petersburg, it was the start of another offseason for us. Last year, St. Pete went really well, and Barber not so much. So, this year St. Pete went well, so we’re going to make Barber go well, too. A lot of work in the past six weeks to keep in it.

“No new tires there. So, we’ll see what she does on new tires for qualifying. I’m feeling pretty good about it.”

Qualifying starts at 2:35 p.m. ET Saturday, preceded by a practice at 11:05 a.m. Both sessions will be streamed on INDYCAR LIVE and available on the INDYCAR Radio Network. The 35-lap race starts at 11:05 a.m. ET Sunday, with live coverage on Peacock and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

Points leader Nolan Siegel was third at 1:12.8955 in the No. 39 HMD Motorsports entry, followed by rookie Bryce Aron at 1:13.1150 in the No. 27 Jaguar Land Rover Chesterfield entry fielded by Andretti Global.

Series veteran Josh Pierson rounded out the top five at 1:13.1425 in the No. 14 HMD Motorsports car.

The 45-minute session featured one red flag, to tow in the stalled No. 26 Copart/Novara Technologies entry of Andretti Global driven by series veteran Louis Foster.
