Heim clinches Championship 4 berth with late Truck victory at Bristol

In an event dominated by Christian Eckes, Corey Heim captured the final spotlight and punched his ticket to this year’s Championship 4 round after emerging late to win the UNOH 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway on Thursday, September 14.

The 21-year-old Heim from Marietta, Georgia, led the final six of 200-scheduled laps in an event where he was one of eight Playoff competitors vying for both a victory and an early automatic spot to race for this year’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship at Phoenix Raceway in early November. Taking the green flag in 11th place, Heim methodically carved his way to the front and managed to secure stage points during both stage break periods.

Then after restarting alongside dominant pole-sitter and Playoff rival Christian Eckes at the start of the final stage period with 80 laps remaining, Heim spent the majority of the final 80-lap run to the finish trailing Eckes. He then capitalized on Eckes being marred in lapped traffic to overtake him for the lead with six laps remaining. From there, Heim managed to keep his No. 11 TRICON Garage Toyota Tundra TRD Pro in front and claim the checkered flag over a hard-charging Eckes to win for the third time in 2023 and become the first Playoff competitor to be guaranteed a championship-contending spot for this year’s finale due to occur less than two months from now.

With on-track qualifying that determined the starting lineup occurring on Thursday, Playoff contender Christian Eckes, who won last weekend’s event at Kansas Speedway, started on pole position after posting a pole-winning lap at 127.064 mph in 15.101 seconds. Joining him on the front row was Playoff contender Carson Hocevar, who posted the second-best qualifying lap at 126.813 mph in 15.131 seconds.

Prior to the event, Bayley Currey, Playoff contender Nick Sanchez, Kaden Honeycutt, Stewart Friesen and Parker Kligerman dropped to the rear of the field due to unapproved adjustments made to their respective trucks.

When the green flag waved and the race started, Christian Eckes, who started on the outside lane, quickly transitioned to the inside lane in front of Carson Hocevar through the first two turns as Ty Majeski challenged Hocevar for the runner-up spot from the outside lane. With the field navigating its way around the Bristol circuit while jostling for early positions, Eckes proceeded to lead the first lap in his No. 19 Gates Hydraulics Chevrolet Silverado RST.

Through the second to fifth lap, a majority of the front-runners migrated to the inside lane and in a single-file line as Eckes retained the lead by three-tenths of a second over Hocevar and Majeski while Chase Purdy, Tanner Gray and rookie Rajah Caruth were in the top six. Behind, Zane Smith overtook rookie Taylor Gray for seventh while Jack Wood was running in ninth ahead of William Sawalich, Corey Heim and Grant Enfinger as Ben Rhodes was mired in 14th in between Jake Drew and Hailie Deegan.

Through the first 10 scheduled laps, Eckes was leading by more than a second over Majeski followed by Hocevar, Purdy and Caruth while Tanner Gray, Zane Smith, Taylor Gray, Wood and Sawalich were running in the top 10. Four laps later, the first caution of the event flew when Jack Wood, who was running ninth, spun and wrecked against the Turn 3 outside wall before his No. 51 Rowdy Manufacturing Chevrolet Silverado RST then spun back down to the track and was clipped by Dean Thompson’s No. 5 Thompson Pipe Group Toyota Tundra TRD Pro as both sustained significant damage to their vehicles and were eliminated from contention. During the caution period, some including Kligerman and Sanchez pitted while rest led by Eckes remained on the track.

When the race restarted under green on Lap 24, Eckes rocketed ahead and retained the lead over Majeski and Hocevar as the field jostled for positions amid two lanes through the first two turns. With Eckes leading and slowly starting to cruise away from the field, Purdy was in fourth ahead of Caruth, Zane Smith, Taylor Gray and Heim while Tanner Gray, Enfinger and Rhodes were mired in the top 11. Amid the battles, Eckes was leading by more than a second over Hocevar and Majeski by the Lap 30 mark.

At the Lap 40 mark, Eckes continued to lead by more than a second over Hocevar followed by Majeski, Purdy and Zane Smith while Caruth, Taylor Gray, Heim, Tanner Gray, Enfinger and Rhodes trailed in the top 11. Meanwhile, Nick Sanchez was still mired towards the rear of the field in 26th behind Daniel Dye.

Ten laps later, Eckes, despite being mired within lapped traffic, continued to lead by two-tenths of a second over Hocevar with third-place Majeski trailing by half a second as the latter two tried to keep pace and pressure Eckes for the top spot.

When the first stage concluded on Lap 55, Eckes captured his fifth Truck stage victory of the 2023 season. Hocevar settled in second followed by Majeski, Purdy and Zane Smith while Caruth, Taylor Gray, Heim, Tanner Gray and Rhodes were scored in the top 10. By then, Enfinger and Sanchez were the only two Playoff contenders to not score the first round of stage points as they were mired in 11th and 26th, respectively.

Under the stage break, a majority of the field led by Eckes pitted for service while the rest led by Playoff contender Zane Smith and including Sanchez, newcomer Carson Kvapil and Bayley Currey remained on the track.

The second stage started on Lap 66 as Zane Smith and Kvapil occupied the front row. At the start, Zane Smith rocketed his No. 38 Speedco Ford F-150 away with the lead from the outside lane while Kvapil, who was piloting the No. 7 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Silverado RST for Spire Motorsports in his series’ debut, spun the tires and stacked up the inside lane. With Kvapil briefly losing pace, Sanchez navigated his No. 2 Gainbridge Chevrolet Silverado RST into the runner-up spot followed by Eckes, the first competitor on four fresh tires, while Kvapil settled in fourth in front of Majeski. As the field behind jostled for positions, Zane Smith maintained the lead by three-tenths of a second over Sanchez by the Lap 70 mark. The caution, however, returned by Lap 74 when Greg Van Alst, who was running towards the rear of the field, spun in Turn 2.

During the following restart on Lap 80, Zane Smith retained the lead after gaining another strong launch from the outside lane while Sanchez and Eckes battled dead even for the runner-up spot before Eckes prevailed during the proceeding lap. Behind, Majeski moved up to fourth ahead of Kvapil while Heim, Enfinger, Taylor Gray, Hocevar and Purdy were in the top 10 ahead of Rhodes. Amid the battles, Eckes started to challenge Zane Smith for the lead as he was trailing by a tenth of a second.

By Lap 90, the top-eight Playoff contenders were running in the top 11 on the track as Zane Smith continued to lead by a tenth of a second over Eckes followed by Sanchez, Majeski and Heim while Kvapil, Enfinger, Taylor Gray, Hocevar, Purdy and Rhodes followed suit, with Kvapil, Gray and Purdy being the top non-Playoff contenders running towards the front.

At the halfway mark on Lap 100, Zane Smith retained the lead ahead of Eckes while Sanchez, Majeski and Heim remained in the top five. By then, Rhodes was overtaken by Caruth for 11th while Enfinger and Hocevar were in seventh and ninth. By then, Matt DiBenedetto and Matt Crafton, both of whom were coming off being eliminated from the Playoffs, were in 15th and 16th while Sawalich and Jake Garcia were in 13th and 14th, respectively. In addition, Kligerman, Stewart Friesen, Tyler Ankrum, Connor Jones and Deegan were battling within the top 20.

Five laps later, Eckes overtook Zane Smith, who was mired behind the lapped competitor of Spencer Boyd, for the lead. Shortly after and with more lead lap and Playoff contenders trying to navigate around Boyd, Majeski, who was running fourth, fell off the pace after he made contact with Heim that got Majeski loose and with a flat right-front tire to the No. 98 Road Ranger Ford F-150. Despite plummeting in the leaderboard as the laps in the second stage dwindled, Majeski continued to run on the track and the event remained under green flag conditions.

When the second stage concluded on Lap 110, Eckes cruised to his sixth Truck stage victory of the 2023 season and second of the night. Zane Smith settled in second while Sanchez, Heim, Enfinger, Taylor Gray, Hocevar, Kvapil, Caruth and Rhodes were scored in the top 10. By then, Majeski was mired in 30th as he was lapped by Eckes, but he would receive the free pass during the stage break period due to being the first competitor mired a lap behind.

During the stage break, some led by Zane Smith pitted for service while the rest led by Eckes remained on the track. Amid the pit stops, Zane Smith was penalized and sent to the rear of the field for pitting outside of his pit box. Taylor Gray also dropped to the rear of the field for speeding on pit road.

With 80 laps remaining, the final stage started as Eckes and Heim occupied the front row. At the start, Eckes took off with the lead from the outside lane and he quickly steered his truck from the outside to the inside lane in front of Heim’s No. 11 Safelite Toyota Tundra TRD Pro through the first two turns. Behind, Enfinger made contact with Taylor Gray to move into third place followed by Hocevar as Gray fell back to fifth in front of Caruth and Rhodes. As the field battled deep within two lanes around the circuit, Eckes stretched his advantage to half a second over Heim and more than a second over third-place Enfinger with 75 laps remaining.

With 60 laps remaining, Eckes continued to lead by more than a second over Heim followed by Enfinger, Hocevar and Taylor Gray while Caruth, Purdy, Rhodes, DiBenedetto and Friesen were running in the top 10. By then, Sanchez, who scrubbed the outside wall at the start of the final stage and was trying to rally his way back to the front after pitting during the stage break, was back in 13th in between Jake Garcia and Crafton while Majeski and Zane Smith were mired in 25th and 27th, respectively.

Ten laps later, Eckes retained the lead by more than a second over Heim while Enfinger, Hocevar and Taylor Gray remained in the top five. By then, the remaining Playoff contenders that included Rhodes, Sanchez, Majeski and Zane Smith were running eighth, 13th, 25th and 26th, respectively.

Down to the final 40 laps of the event, Eckes was now leading by a tenth over Heim while Enfinger, Hocevar and Taylor Gray continued to trail from third to fifth, respectively. Meanwhile, Caruth retained sixth ahead of Purdy, Rhodes, DiBenedetto and Friesen while Sawalich, Garcia, Sanchez, Bayley Currey and Matt Crafton occupied the top 15. By then, Zane Smith, who was still mired within the middle of the pack amid his late pit road penalty, was lapped by Eckes.

With less than 30 laps remaining, Eckes stabilized his advantage by two-tenths of a second over Heim while Enfinger, Hocevar and Taylor Gray remained in the five. By then, Majeski was back in 23rd, but in jeopardy of being lapped by Eckes, while Rhodes and Sanchez were still scored on the lead lap in eighth and 12th. Eckes would proceed to extend the advantage by half a second with less than 20 laps remaining.

Down to the final 10 laps of the event, Eckes stretched his advantage to seven-tenths of a second over Heim while Enfinger, Hocevar and Taylor followed suit in the top five. By then, Rhodes and Sanchez moved up to seventh and 10th while Majeski was mired in 20th. In addition, Zane Smith was back in 24th.

Then with six laps remaining, Eckes hit a roadblock after getting mired behind lapped competitors, among which included Ty Majeski and Tanner Gray. This enabled Heim to make his move beneath Eckes for the lead through Turn 2. With both Eckes and Heim battling dead even through Turn 3, Heim managed to muscle ahead and assume the lead from the inside lane with five laps remaining. During the proceeding laps, Heim, who was approaching the lapped traffic that stalled Eckes’ momentum, retained the lead by three-tenths of a second over Eckes, who kept Heim close within his sights and tried to regain the lost advantage.

When the white flag waved and the final lap started, Heim remained as the leader by two-tenths of a second over Eckes. Despite Eckes gaining a strong run to Heim’s outside through Turns 2 and 3 as Heim was still mired in lapped traffic, Heim managed to keep Eckes behind him through Turns 3 and 4 as he surged ahead and claimed the checkered flag to win by two-tenths of a second over Eckes.

With the victory, Heim, who won the 2023 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series regular-season championship, scored his third Truck victory of the season, the fifth of his career, first at Bristol and first since winning at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in July. Above all, Heim officially claimed one of four vacant spots to this year’s Championship 4 round as he and the No. 11 TRICON Garage Toyota team led by former championship-winning crew chief Scott Zipadelli will contend for the series championship at Phoenix Raceway in November.

“Just huge thank you to TRICON Garage, Toyota Racing, Safelite,” Heim, who celebrated with his team and the fans on the frontstretch, said on FS1. “This is insane. I feel like I’ve given so many [wins] away this year and to win one at the end like that was so special. Unreal. We finally got one back. I was in the zone. I just thought about all the races we’ve given away or I’ve given away. I just focus forward and semi-pass up right where we needed to be. Gosh, it’s so awesome to know we’re in Phoenix and it’s awesome.”

While Heim was left victorious, Eckes was left dejected on pit road after having a secured spot for himself for the finale evaporate in an event where he led a race-high 150 laps and swept both stages. The runner-up result, though, places Eckes in the runner-up spot in the current Playoff standings and 29 points above the top-four cutline with two upcoming Playoff events for him to rally and receive another opportunity to make the cutline by October.

“I just think it’s a little ironic that [Tanner Gray] was three laps down and waited,” Eckes said. “Whatever. Good truck. I got really tight there at the end. It is what it is, but just huge thanks to Gates Hydraulics,…everybody involved. That one stings, for sure.”

Like Eckes, the Bristol night featured strong runs for Enfinger and Hocevar, both of whom finished third and fourth in the final running order. As a result, Hocevar is situated in third place in the Playoff standings and 18 points above the cutline while Enfinger holds possession of the fourth and final spot above the cutline by 14 points.

“I feel like, overall, we executed almost to the best of our ability,” Enfinger said. “I wished we could’ve contended for the win, but overall, I feel like we got all we could get out of our Champion Power Equipment Chevrolet. Lacking a little bit to contend for a win. We always want to fight for a win. We couldn’t do that [tonight], but I think overall, we executed well on pit road. We executed well. Not happy, but satisfied.”

“We just needed to have a good smooth night tonight and get the points we could and not over-extend ourselves or make any mistakes,” Hocevar added. “We did just that. Our Worldwide Express Chevy was really fast. It was just about not making mistakes and going to run the top [lane]. I wished we could’ve widened out a little bit, but fourth [in the Playoff standings] and plus 20, 18 or whatever it is [above the cutline] is good going into Talladega and that was our goal. We’ll just keep clicking away.”

Rookie Taylor Gray, coming off a career-best runner-up result at Kansas Speedway, notched his second top-five finish in recent weeks by finishing fifth and as the highest non-Playoff competitor in the field. Rajah Caruth, Rhodes, Purdy, Sanchez and DiBenedetto completed the top 10 on the track.

For Sanchez, the ninth-place result marks his 10th top-10 finish of the season and a strong rally from starting at the rear of the field. The result, however, leaves him and his No. 2 Rev Racing Chevrolet team 22 points below the top-four cutline. Rhodes, Majeski and Zane Smith join Sanchez in being scored below the cutline following the first Round of 8 event.

“It sucks because I did legitimately think we had pace to contend for a win,” Sanchez said. “Just didn’t work out tonight. It is what it is, but we’ll go to Talladega and try to minimize the damage and try to go win Homestead.”

There were four lead changes for four different leaders. The race featured four cautions for 33 laps. In addition, 20 of 36 starters finished on the lead lap.

Nemechek Hopes to Continue Dream Season as NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs Begin

FORT WORTH, Texas (September 14, 2023) – John Hunter Nemechek is riding a huge wave of momentum heading into the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs as the Joe Gibbs Racing driver begins his quest to make history.

When the Playoffs open Friday evening at Bristol Motor Speedway, he will be looking to join his father, Joe, as a series champion and make the Nemecheks the first to accomplish the feat in the history of the NASCAR Xfinity Series which began in 1982.

“It would be huge,” Nemechek said. “A championship is one thing I haven’t won in the NASCAR National Series so to be able to go win an Xfinity Series title would be huge and being able to do it and to have a championship in the same series my dad did in ’92 when he won it would be huge. You see a lot of father-son combinations but not a lot of father-son champions.”

Nemechek is a favorite to win the title among the eight drivers who earned playoff berths. He won the regular-season championship on the strength of a series-high six victories. He also has finished among the top five in half his starts at this stage of the season (13 of 26) to go along with 19 top-10 finishes, two poles and a series-best 915 laps led. His laps led have been dominant, with the next best total being 361 by fellow Playoff driver Justin Allgaier, and he co-shares the series lead for top-10 finishes.

“I think the keys to success is the team that is around me,” said Nemechek, who will be driving the No. 20 JGR Toyota at Texas. “I feel I’ve grown as a driver but more or less it’s the people on the team at JGR, the men and women at the shop. Everybody is working really hard; we’ve been able to execute very well; and we’ve had speed every week. We’ve been able to contend every single week. With that, it’s a huge team effort and that’s what it takes to get it done.”

The one place Nemechek always has gotten it done in his career has been Texas Motor Speedway, which plays host to the second race of the three-race opening round with the Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 on Saturday, Sept., 23 (2:30 p.m. CT., TV: USA; Radio: PRN, SiriusXM).

He is one of only two NXS Playoff drivers with a previous victory at Texas – Cole Custer is the other – and has been strong in his five career starts. He has four top-10 finishes, including three of those among the top five. He also had success in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at TMS with a win, pole and three top-10 finishes in seven starts.

“I definitely enjoy going to Texas, being able to have a win there as well as a lot of great runs over the past couple of years not only in the Xfinity Series but the Truck Series,” said Nemechek, whose NXS win came in 2021. “Texas is a place that I look forward to going to every single year. I definitely feel like that can be an advantage for us, hopefully a good advantage and we get a win there.”

The 2023 season itself has just been part of what has been a “dream year” for the 26-year-old Nemechek.

On Sept. 6, seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson’s Legacy Motor Club announced that Nemechek will be joining the organization on the Cup Series level in 2024 as the driver of the No. 42 Toyota. He returns to the premier series where he was a rookie for Front Row Motorsports in 2020 and has made 40 career starts.

“It’s huge to be able to go race on the Cup level with Legacy Motor Club next year,” Nemechek said. “I’m looking forward to doing so, but at the same time it is all focus on 2023 right now. I’ll focus on 2024 once we get through the championship this year.”

In addition to the exciting news of a Cup ride in 2024, the Nemecheks also had some on the personal side as well. He and his wife, Taylor, announced Aug. 24 the birth of their second child, Penelope. She joins her two-year-old sister, Aspen.

“This year has definitely been incredible both on and off the race track,” Nemechek said. “It’s been a great year on the race track but also off with having Aspen and now Penelope, with her being our second child. It means a lot to Taylor and myself, and to have a lot of good runs on top of it, win a lot of races and be a contender every single week, it’s been a dream year.”

The NASCAR Playoffs weekend will be highlighted by the NASCAR Xfinity Series Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 on Saturday, Sept. 23 (2:30 p.m. CT on USA Network, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Ch. 90, and PRN), and the NASCAR Cup Series Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 on Sunday, Sept. 24 (2:30 p.m. CT on USA Network, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Ch. 90, PRN, and 95.9 The Ranch-local).

He’s Back!: This week at Bristol Motor Speedway, Young’s Motorsports welcomes back Willow Park, Texas native Kaden Honeycutt, as the driver of the No. 02 RANDCO Industries Inc. Chevrolet Silverado RST for the fourth time in 2023.

Earlier this year, Honeycutt had an impressive showing in his Young’s Motorsports debut at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway in May, where he qualified on speed in 24th position and fought throughout the 158-lap race for a lead-lap 10th-place finish.

The result was a season-best for the Mooresville, N.C.-based team.

A week later, he delivered a solid 17th-place finish after starting 11th in the inaugural Tyson 250.

Most recently, Honeycutt steered the No. 02 RANDCO Industries Inc. Chevrolet Silverado RST in last Friday night’s Kansas Lottery 200.

Bristol will signify his 10th Truck Series start of the 2023 season between three teams.

About Kaden: Kaden Honeycutt is 20 years old and resides in Aledo, TX. Honeycutt started racing in 2012 in the Bandolero Division, compiling multiple wins throughout Alabama and Texas.

In 2016, he moved into the INEX Legend Car Young Lions Division, where he visited victory lane multiple times. In 2017, he advanced to the INEX Pro Series, where he won the Las Vegas Bullring Showdown.

2017 also saw Honeycutt competing in the Pro Truck Series, including the 2017 Pro Truck Snowball Derby event at Five Flags (Fla.) Speedway.

From 2018 to 2020, he graduated to the ARCA Menards Series and competed in select Super Late Model and IMCA Dirt Modified events.

Welcome Back!: Young’s Motorsports welcomes back driver Greg Van Alst as driver of the No. 20 Young’s Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado RST for Thursday night’s UNOH 200 presented by Ohio Logistics and the remainder of the 2023 Truck Series season.

Van Alst invades the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series tour with Young’s Motorsports after a successful Late Model career in the Midwest, which included the 2019 ARCA | CRA championship and runner-up in 2020.

After running a part-time ARCA Menards Series schedule in 2001, he returned 20 years later to make his debut at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. After a successful part-time schedule, which included a runner-up finish at Winchester (Ind.) Speedway, Van Alst increased his presence in 2022, leading to a championship assault.

In 2022, Van Alst returned to the ARCA Menards Series scene, where his family-owned team ran the complete schedule with one top-five and 11 top-10 finishes en route to a fifth-place finish in the championship standings.

He returned to the ARCA tour with a vengeance in 2023 and kicked off the season with a victory in the Brandt 200 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, a triumphant achievement for an underfunded organization.

Following the victory, Van Alst competed in four other races before opting to bow out of the championship race and focus on other driving opportunities outside the series.

Van Alst made his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway in July for Alpha Prime Racing and will run the remaining seven NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series races in 2023 for Young’s Motorsports.

Outside of racing, Van Alst is a successful entrepreneur, successfully launching Top Choice Fence, one of the premier fence-building companies in east-central Indiana.

Greg Van Alst Truck Series Bristol Motor Speedway Stats: Thursday night’s UNOH 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway will mark Van Alst’s inaugural Truck Series start at the historic Tennessee short track.

Although he has no NASCAR experience in The Volunteer State, he has two prior starts in the NASCAR-owned ARCA Menards Series. In those starts, he has earned two top-15 finishes, including a track-best of 14th in last September’s Bush’s Beans 200.

Young’s Motorsports’ NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series at Bristol Motor Speedway: This week will mark Young’s Motorsports’ 20th, 21st and 22nd NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series starts at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The organization posted a team-best finish at the track of 14th with Tanner Thorson in the 2018 edition of the UNOH 200 on August 16, 2018.

Since 2012, the Mooresville, N.C.-based Young’s Motorsports team has had an average starting position of 23.4 and an average finish of 23.9 in 19 Bristol Motor Speedway starts overall.

TOP FIVE AT KANSAS: Kyle Larson led the way for Hendrick Motorsports with a fourth-place result in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway. After qualifying on the front row, he quickly jumped to the lead. The 31-year-old driver went on to score his fourth stage win of the season and would pace the field for a race-high 99 laps. Despite finishing outside the top 10 in stage two, Larson rallied in the final stage to earn a fourth-place result in his 100th Cup Series start with Hendrick Motorsports.

ATOP THE STANDINGS: Following the second race of the 2023 Cup Series playoffs, Larson took the lead in the driver points standings. Larson’s first-place finish at Darlington Raceway (which locked him into the Round of 12) and his fourth-place finish at Kansas put him at the top with 2,117 points.

IN 2023: The driver of the No. 5 leads the series in top-five finishes (12) and average starting position (9.64) this season. He ranks as the second-best driver on restarts, based on data from Racing Insights. Larson has the third-most laps led (778), laps run in the top five (2,619), laps run in the top 10 (4,041) and is in a four-way tie for the third-most top-10 finishes (14). In addition, he has the fourth-best average running position (11.79).

BACK AT BRISTOL: This weekend, the Elk Grove, California, native returns to Bristol Motor Speedway for the famous night race. The Tennessee short track is where Larson has led the second-most laps (850) at any track in his Cup Series career, only 49 circuits behind Dover Motor Speedway. In 2021, he won the night race, taking the No. 5 Valvoline Chevrolet to victory lane. Since the start of 2017, which totals eight starts on Bristol’s concrete layout, Larson has the best average starting position (4.75), average finishing position (6.25) and most laps led (760). In that span, he is tied for the most stage wins (three), runner-up finishes (two), top-10s (seven) and pole positions (one).

STRONG ON SHORT TRACKS: This season, Larson has earned three victories on short tracks: Richmond Raceway, Martinsville Speedway and the exhibition All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway. Of all Cup Series drivers in the Next Gen era (since 2022) on short tracks, he has the best average finish (8.25), is tied for the most points-paying wins (two) and has the second-most points scored (295). In 49 career Cup Series starts on short tracks, Larson has four wins, 12 top-five finishes, 22 top-10s, three pole positions and 1,245 laps led.

FOUR TIRES FAST: The No. 5 pit crew holds the fourth-fastest four-tire average pit stop time at 11.244 seconds. Their four-tire stop of 9.281 seconds on lap 93 in June’s race at Nashville Superspeedway is the fifth-fastest four-tire stop of the season. The team’s five-man pit crew consists of Blaine Anderson (front-tire changer), R.J. Barnette (tire carrier), Brandon Harder (fueler), Brandon Johnson (jackman) and Calvin Teague (rear-tire changer).

KANSAS CHRONICLES: Last weekend at Kansas Speedway, Chase Elliott and the No. 9 team had one of their strongest races of the season. The 27-year-old driver led 47 laps en route to a sixth-place finish. Elliott ran all but one lap inside the top 15, averaged a fifth-place running position and had his second-highest driver rating of the year (113.20), according to NASCAR loop data. The result was his 10th top-10 finish in 16 NASCAR Cup Series starts at the 1.5-mile oval and his 12th top-10 of the year.

OWNING IT: While Elliott did not make the driver playoffs this season, he and the No. 9 team are part of the 16-team playoff field for the owner championship. Heading into this weekend’s Round of 16 elimination race at Bristol Motor Speedway, the No. 9 is eighth in the owner playoff standings and is 12 points above the line to advance to the Round of 12.

BUILDING CONSISTENCY: The No. 9 team is hitting its stride, with Elliott being one of only two drivers to reach four top-10 finishes over the last five races – second at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, fourth at Daytona International Speedway, eighth at Darlington Raceway and sixth at Kansas. Over that span, he’s earned the fifth-most points (169), tied with teammate Kyle Larson, and is also tied for the fourth-best average finish (10.40).

LAST YEAR’S BATTLE: Last fall at Bristol, Elliott started the Saturday night race in the 23rd position and steadily gained ground throughout the first two stages. He then came on strong in the final segment to earn a runner-up result. That finish is his best in a points-paying Cup Series race at the Tennessee short track.

BRISTOL DEETS: This Saturday, Elliott will make his 13th Bristol Cup Series start on the track’s concrete oval. He has four top-five finishes, six top-10s and 439 laps led at “The Last Great Colosseum,” his third-most at active tracks on the Cup Series circuit, behind Martinsville Speedway (957) and Phoenix Raceway (546). Elliott has finished inside the top seven in four of the last five night races at the .533-mile track. In addition, Elliott and the No. 9 team captured the NASCAR All-Star Race victory at this venue in 2020.

SHORT TRACK STATE OF MIND: The Bristol race marks Elliott’s 44th short-track start in the Cup Series. In his previous 43 races, he has garnered one win (Martinsville 2020), 14 top-five finishes, 22 top-10s, two pole positions and 1,491 laps led. This season, across two paved short-track starts, Elliott has one top-10 finish, earning a best effort of 10th at Martinsville (his first start after returning from his leg injury). In the Next Gen era (since 2022) on short tracks, he has the fifth-best average finish (9.14) and has scored the eighth-most points (260).

AG IN TENNESSEE: Crew chief Alan Gustafson is set to call his 34th Bristol Cup Series race on Saturday night. In his previous 33 starts with five different drivers – Kyle Busch, Casey Mears, Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon and Elliott – the Ormond Beach, Florida, native has one win (2007 with Busch), 10 top-five finishes, 17 top-10s and 1,039 laps led. Together, he and Elliott captured the All-Star Race victory in 2020, leading 60 of 140 laps.

KEEP IT ROLLIN’: Following a 15th-place finish at Kansas Speedway, William Byron is fourth in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series playoff standings, 41 points above the elimination line. With 28 races completed, Byron leads the series in wins (five) and stage wins (eight). The 25-year-old driver’s series-leading 877 laps led are also a single-season career-best. He is tied for second in top-five finishes (10) and tied for third in top-10s (14). In addition, Byron ranks second in average running position (10.51), laps run in the top five (3,072) and laps run in the top 10 (4,071).

NEXT GEN DUO: Since the introduction of the Next Gen Cup Series car in 2022, Byron and crew chief Rudy Fugle have collected seven wins together. Not only is that the most by a driver but it is also the most by a crew chief in the same time period. In fact, two of those seven wins came during night races (Martinsville Speedway in 2022 and Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2023).

BRISTOL BULLETS: This weekend, Byron will make his ninth Cup Series start on the concrete of Bristol Motor Speedway. In his eight previous starts at the short track, the Charlotte, North Carolina, native has two consecutive third-place efforts – tied for the second-longest active top-10 streak at Bristol. No matter what any other driver does this Saturday night, Byron needs just 22 points to lock into the Round of 12. In four of his last five races at the .533-mile track, he has earned at least that amount of points, if not more.

SHORT-TRACK STATS: Byron has one win (Martinsville in 2022), seven top-five finishes, 11 top-10s and 460 laps led in 30 Cup Series starts on short tracks. In the Next Gen era, he has scored the sixth-most points (269) and posted the eighth-best average finish (11.63) on that track type.

FUGLE FILES: Saturday night’s race will mark Fugle’s third Cup Series start on pavement at “The Last Great Colosseum.” In his two previous starts at the highest level, Fugle and the No. 24 team have collected back-to-back third-place results. Beyond this, Fugle has seven NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series starts and two in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. His one win at the half-mile track came in the 2013 spring Truck Series race. In total, he notched three top-five finishes and six top-10s in Truck Series events at Bristol.

PIT ROAD PROWESS: Through 28 races in the 2023 season, the No. 24 pit crew remains in the top spot with the fastest average four-tire pit stop time of 11.071 seconds. The No. 24 pit crew consists of Spencer Bishop (jackman), Jeff Cordero (front-tire changer), Orane Ossowski (rear-tire changer), Ryan Patton (tire carrier) and Landon Walker (fueler).

KANSAS RECAP: Last Sunday, Alex Bowman garnered his third consecutive top-10 finish at Kansas Speedway. The 30-year-old driver mounted a charge in the final stage to claim 10th place and his ninth top-10 result of the season.

BACK IN THE FIGHT: This Saturday, Bowman will take on “The Last Great Colosseum” as the NASCAR Cup Series heads to Bristol Motor Speedway. The driver of the No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will make his 13th start at the .533-mile short track in NASCAR’s premier series, previously tallying two top-five finishes and three top-10s. The last time Bowman was on Bristol’s concrete layout, he started the race in third and finished the first two stages in sixth. Unfortunately, his strong day ended early after being collected in an on-track incident on lap 278. In that race, Bowman was the ninth-fastest car on green flag speed, according to NASCAR loop data. Bowman matched his career-best finish of fifth place at the Tennessee track in 2021.

HE’S GOT HISTORY: Bowman has earned wins in two of the last 12 short-track Cup Series races. His victory in the penultimate race of the 2021 season at Martinsville Speedway was the final triumph of Bowman’s four-win campaign (best in his career to date) at Hendrick Motorsports. Earlier that season, he also won at Richmond Raceway.

SET FOR THE RESTART: The Tucson, Arizona, native ranks seventh-best on restarts in 2023, according to data from Racing Insights. That mark is second-best among the Hendrick Motorsports quartet, as teammate Kyle Larson is second in this statistical category. In last fall’s Bristol’s race, Bowman was the 10th-fastest driver on restarts, according to NASCAR loop data.

BATTLE-TESTED BLAKE: Crew chief Blake Harris will make his first start with Bowman on the traditional version of Bristol. The second-year crew chief is calling the shots on that layout in Thunder Valley for the second time. In last year’s night race, his driver finished just outside of the top 10 in 11th after starting the race in 18th.

SAVE THEM ALL: Bowman and primary partner Ally are teaming up this year to bring back the Best Friends Animal Society donation effort. This week, the duo will make charitable contributions to the Appalachian Highlands Humane Society, which serves the local community in Johnson City, Tennessee. Bowman and Ally will donate $4,800 to Best Friends and Appalachian Highlands Humane Society. Ally will increase its donation to $10,000 if the No. 48 team wins.

IN THE NIGHT: During Saturday’s race under the lights at Bristol, the No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will adorn its “night” scheme for the final time in 2023. This scheme hosts a black base with bright plum, grapefruit, and seafoam stripes down the side. CLOSING IN ON 300: Hendrick Motorsports is just one points-paying victory away from its milestone 300th win in the NASCAR Cup Series. Twenty drivers have combined to reach the organization’s current total of 299, which is the most Cup Series wins by any team. With eight points-paying victories in 2023, the team has posted its 36th multi-win season in the Cup Series while maintaining a streak of at least two per season for the past 30 years. The organization has gone to victory lane at more racetracks (31) than any other active team.

FITS LIKE A GLOVE: For this weekend’s on-track activity at Bristol Motor Speedway, all four Hendrick Motorsports drivers will wear skeleton driving gloves as part of The Dale Jr. Foundation’s Driven to Give Gloves program benefitting The Dale and Amy Earnhardt Fund at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The drivers will sign the right-hand glove, Dale Earnhardt Jr. will sign the left-hand glove and the pair will be auctioned off on The Dale Jr. Foundation auction page starting on Friday, Sept. 15 and ending on Monday, Sept. 18.

PLAYOFF LOWDOWN: The 2023 season marks the 20th year with playoffs in NASCAR. Including this year, Hendrick Motorsports has had at least two drivers compete in the postseason in 18 straight seasons and in 19 of the 20 postseason years. Both marks are the most of all teams. William Byron (five wins) and Kyle Larson (three wins) are in the 16-driver field. In addition, the Nos. 5, 9 and 24 teams are battling for the owner championship. Larson and the No. 5 team are locked into the Round of 12 with his victory at Darlington Raceway.

CHAMPIONSHIP COUNT: The Rick Hendrick-owned team has a series-best 14 Cup Series championships. NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2024 inductee Jimmie Johnson accounts for half of those with seven (2006-10, 2013 and 2016). NASCAR Hall of Famer and team vice chairman Jeff Gordon racked up four titles (1995, 1997-98 and 2001). NASCAR Hall of Famer Terry Labonte (1996), Chase Elliott (2020) and Larson (2021) each have one championship for the team. Nine of those titles have come in the playoff era (2004-present).

RECORD SETTERS: Hendrick Motorsports has posted a series-best 56 wins in the playoffs. Johnson has the most with 29 victories. Among the current driver lineup, Elliott and Larson top the board with seven wins apiece in the playoffs followed by Alex Bowman with one.

LOOK BACK TO LAST YEAR: In last year’s night race at Bristol, Hendrick Motorsports placed three cars in the top five. Elliott was the runner-up finisher, Byron took third and Larson rounded out the top five. This is one of two times that the team has placed three drivers in the top five at Bristol, with the other coming in September 2021. In total, there have been six instances of a team placing three cars in the top five at the Tennessee short track.

COLOSSEUM CLOSERS: The organization has 12 wins at “The Last Great Colosseum.” Gordon (five wins) and Johnson (two wins) are the only drivers in team history to win multiple times at the venue. Larson, Labonte, Kyle Busch, Kasey Kahne and Darrell Waltrip each have one triumph for the team.

NO SHORTAGE: Hendrick Motorsports leads all active Cup Series teams with 57 points-paying victories on short tracks. Gordon’s 17 short-track wins lead all drivers in team history. The active driver lineup has combined for seven short-track successes: Larson (three), Bowman (two), Byron (one) and Elliott (one).

NEXT GEN NUMBERS: With three wins on short tracks since 2022, Hendrick Motorsports has the most victories on that track type in the Next Gen car. Those victories came at Martinsville Speedway by Byron in 2022 and Larson in 2023 as well as at Richmond Raceway by Larson in 2023.

STUDYING THE TRENDS: In each of the last six 2023 Cup Series races, Hendrick Motorsports has had a driver finish in the top five. Those top fives came at Michigan International Speedway (Larson), the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course (Elliott and Bowman), Watkins Glen International (Byron), Daytona International Speedway (Elliott), Darlington (Larson and Byron) and Kansas Speedway (Larson). No other team has a streak of more than two races.

Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on returning to the concrete track of Bristol Motor Speedway: “The night race at Bristol (Motor Speedway) is one of my favorites. It’s such a prestigious track and race. The fans always show up there and it’s a great atmosphere. I’ve had some good runs on the concrete track, including a win in the Valvoline Chevy in 2021. Valvoline is back this weekend and it would be great to get another win before the Round of 12!”

Cliff Daniels, crew chief of the No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on the team’s strong playoff results thus far: “Our team has great momentum right now. It’s been nice to have two good runs the past two weeks, but there is certainly a lot of racing left ahead in the playoffs. We’ve got to stay focused and stay grounded. We take every week as it comes and this week is at Bristol (Motor Speedway), which is just an amazing track. I love Bristol. Kyle (Larson) loves Bristol. He’s always super good at Bristol in anything that he drives. The team’s been executing well and hopefully we have a fast Chevy to be there at the end. I’m sure it’s going to be an exciting race.”

Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on the unique environment of Bristol: “My favorite (track), I would say, and probably my favorite race of the year. I just think that the environment up there is so unique and it’s so different. I love going (there). It’s close to home and up in the mountains of Tennessee. It’s just a cool deal from top to bottom. And they’ve always done a good job up there making that environment fun and energetic for the drivers and the fans. I think when that’s the case, everybody has more fun.”

Alan Gustafson, crew chief of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on the Next Gen car at Bristol and what to expect on Saturday night: “It’s hard to say. We’ve had one race there with this car and it seemed ok. The tire’s changing slightly for this race, so that’s always a bit of an unknown. We’ll see what that has in store for us and how it affects the racing. Hopefully, there’s multiple lanes. To me, when we have multiple lanes and the top comes in, the racing’s better and you have more opportunity to pass.”

William Byron, driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on his mindset for Saturday’s race: “It would be nice if we could lock into the next round of the playoffs, or be close to locking in, before the end of the race this weekend. It just gives you more options on what you can do strategy-wise. We’ve raced at Bristol (Motor Speedway) in every point situation just about before, so we’ll be prepared for whatever happens. We just need to go in, race our own race and maximize points. Hopefully, we’ll be in a situation to go for a win and add some extra playoff points for the next round if it works out.”

Rudy Fugle, crew chief of the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on how to prepare for Bristol: “Bristol (Motor Speedway) is a great atmosphere but a challenge to setup for. You need to be able to attack the entry without getting too loose, have your car turning when it lands into the banking, and you need to keep wrapping the bottom on exit but not so much that it snaps the back end of the car. It all happens super quick. We’ll qualify in the 14-second bracket. Even on a long run, we’ll probably be in the mid-15-second range. Getting a good starting spot is key and getting some stage points would be great. There will be a bunch of strategies playing out given all the different scenarios. It will be about running our own race.”

Alex Bowman, driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on heading to Bristol: “I think this weekend is one that our team really looks forward to. We have faced some unfortunate circumstances this season, so getting a top-10 finish last weekend in Kansas was a bit of a stabilizer for the No. 48 team. We have a chance to create some momentum to finish the season with and we all know that. Blake (Harris) and I have always focused on the details, looked to maximize where we can and this weekend is no different. We haven’t been to Bristol (Motor Speedway) together yet, but that gives us a clean slate to go work with, which I am looking forward to.”

Blake Harris, crew chief of the No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on his mindset for this weekend’s race at Bristol: “Saturday night at Bristol (Motor Speedway) is a great opportunity for us to bounce back. I feel like we had decent car speed and momentum going at Darlington (Raceway) and then rallied at the end of the Kansas race to bring home a top-10. It’s important to go into these playoff races and challenge ourselves as a team against those who are still in it to see where we stack up. Alex (Bowman) had a great race here last fall before a mechanical issue and Hendrick Motorsports as an organization had some positive results as well. We plan to go execute a clean weekend from start to finish and put ourselves in the best position to put the No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in victory lane.”

Rajah Caruth/AAN Adjusters Bristol

Gilreath Farms & AAN Adjusters are back for the 3rd time in 2023 with Alpha Prime Racing Friday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. It’s the 3rd different driver pairing this season for the former Tommy Joe Martins sponsor, this week joining forces with truck series regular Rajah Caruth, who will be making his eighth Xfinity Series start of the season for the team.

Bristol treated the Alpha Prime Racing group well in 2022, with the team scoring their second ever top-10 finish with Stefan Parsons in the 45 car, with Ryan Ellis and the 44 group scoring a solid top-20.
