The result came over two days of racing at the 2-mile track. Wet weather stopped the race after 74 laps on Sunday and the event was completed on Monday afternoon. Larson earned his fourth straight finish inside the top seven at the Irish Hills and the result moved him up to sixth in the points standings.

ON THIS DATE: This Sunday, Larson will drive the No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in the premier series race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course. The 2021 Cup Series champion holds the best finish of all Hendrick Motorsports drivers at the Indianapolis Road Course with a third-place result in 2021. He also won the last Cup race held on Aug. 13th, at Michigan (in 2017).

ROAD READY: Larson has four road course wins in the Cup Series: Sonoma Raceway (2021), the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL (2021) and Watkins Glen International (2021 and 2022). These victories place him in a tie for the third-most road course wins among active drivers. He followed that up with a fourth-place result in the second stage. In an eventful final stage, the Dawsonville, Georgia, native raced as high as second and was in that spot when a caution came out with five laps to go for debris. On the restart, Elliott was collected in a multi-car incident in turn one but was able to battle his way to 16th after the race was sent into overtime. In the NASCAR Cup Series’ inaugural road racing event at Indianapolis in 2021, Elliott drove to a fourth-place result. In the two races at the 14-turn layout, he holds the best average running position (7.91).

KEEP THE TOP FIVES ALIVE: This season, Elliott has two road course starts in the series and has finished inside the top five in each of them. The 27-year-old driver paced the field for seven laps at Sonoma Raceway en route to a fifth-place result and followed that up with a third-place effort in the inaugural Chicago Street Course race. Elliott’s average finish (4.00) across those two races is the second-best mark in the series.

ROAD RACING RUNDOWN: Since the start of 2022, Elliott’s best finish on a road course is second, achieved at Road America last season. In that span, he has five top-five finishes and six top-10s (tied for second-most) across eight starts on serpentine tracks. The Hendrick Motorsports driver has paced the field for 128 laps on road courses since the beginning of last season, which is tied for the most circuits out front. He has also earned two pole awards (Road America and Watkins Glen International in 2022) and has a series-leading average finish of 7.75. Despite missing the race at Circuit of The Americas in March 2023 due to his leg injury, Elliott has the sixth-most points earned (262) in that span.

LEGEND IN THE MAKING: In 27 Cup Series starts on road courses, Elliott has an average finish of 7.85, with seven wins, 16 top-five finishes and 19 top-10s. His average finish is not only the best among active drivers, but third all-time among drivers (with four or more starts), behind NASCAR legends Fireball Roberts and Buck Baker.

WINNING WAYS: Elliott has proven his road-racing prowess, leading all active drivers with seven wins on road courses – most recently at Road America in 2021. WIN AND IN: Elliott sits 22nd in the driver points standings, 55 markers below the provisional playoff cutline with three races remaining in the regular season. A victory would lock Elliott into the playoffs and the team is up to the task. Across the three tracks remaining, Elliott and the No. 9 crew have two wins at Watkins Glen, a best effort of second (twice) at Daytona International Speedway and a best finish of fourth at the road course in Indianapolis. Currently, the No. 9 team is in the provisional field for the owner’s title as the team ranks 14th in those standings.

THREE TO GO: With three races left in the regular season, William Byron is third in the NASCAR Cup Series driver points standings, 96 markers behind the leader. While the Charlotte, North Carolina, native is hoping to secure his first Cup Series regular-season championship, he’s still having a career-best season. To this point, Byron leads the series in wins (four), average starting position (9.65), stage wins (seven) and laps run in the top five (2,688). He also has led a single-season career-best 810 laps (second-most). The 25-year-old driver’s eight top-five finishes and 11 top-10s are both tied for the third-most in the sport’s top division. In addition, Byron ranks third in average running position (10.203) and laps run in the top 10 (3,617), respectively.

HISTORY MAKER: While this is only the third time that the Cup Series has competed on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, Byron has made history at the famed venue. In 2017, Byron made his first trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. While battling for a championship, Byron became the youngest driver to win a major race at the historic 2.5-mile oval at 19 years, seven months and 23 days.

WHAT’S IN A NUMBER?: Byron would love to kiss the bricks again this weekend, and if he does, he will add to the already lengthy legacy the No. 24 has at Indianapolis. Dating back to 1994, Jeff Gordon won the inaugural Brickyard 400 before going on to win the crown-jewel event four more times in the No. 24 – the most by a car number at the famed track. A victory would also bring the iconic number closer to the total win mark set by a car number in the Cup Series, currently tied for fourth at 101 wins with the No. 3. The No. 24 is behind the No. 2 with 102 wins, the No. 43 with 200 wins and the No. 11 with 230 wins on the all-time list.

FUGLE FILES: Crew chief Rudy Fugle is set to make his third start on top of the pit box at the Indianapolis Road Course this Sunday. In his two previous starts, Fugle and the No. 24 team captured the pole in the inaugural race in 2021 and have been in contention to win in both showings. In fact, the team has the fourth-best average running position (10.33) in the two races on the road course layout. However, misfortunate has struck the team late, once due to the curbing of the track coming up and the second due to an on-track incident in the closing laps. All told, Fugle has 25 national series starts on road courses (15 in the Cup Series, three in the Xfinity Series and seven in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series). He earned a road course win in the truck ranks in 2015. One of those seven truck starts was also with Byron where the duo raced to a 10th-place finish at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in 2016.

PIT ROAD PROWESS: After 23 races in the 2023 season, the No. 24 pit crew remains in the top spot with the fastest average four-tire pit stop time of 10.991 seconds. The No. 24 pit crew consists of Spencer Bishop (jackman), Jeff Cordero (front-tire changer), Orane Ossowski (rear-tire changer), Ryan Patton (tire carrier) and Landon Walker (fueler).

BACK HOME AGAIN IN INDIANA: Traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana for this Sunday’s Cup Series race, one crew member of the No. 24 team calls this their home track. Joining the team for the 2022 season, engineer Ryan Kelly hails from Avon, Indiana, just over 10 miles away from the track. An engineering graduate of Purdue University of Indianapolis, Kelly interned at Andretti Autosport, collecting two Indy 500 wins, before transitioning to his role in NASCAR.

AT IT AGAIN WITH AXALTA: For the fourth time in the 2023 season, Axalta will be back onboard Byron’s No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. This is Axalta’s 31st year of partnership with Hendrick Motorsports. The company has been a primary partner for two of Byron’s wins this year – the May victory at Darlington Raceway and the July triumph at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

PUSH TO THE PLAYOFFS: With just three races left in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series regular season, Alex Bowman is currently ranked 20th in the driver points standings. He is 44 markers behind the provisional playoff cutoff line. As it stands now, Bowman needs to gain an average of 15 points per race on the cutline to point his way into the postseason. Despite a 60-point penalty in April and missing three points-paying races in the spring with an injury, Bowman still can make the top 16 for the playoffs. The 30-year-old driver has three top-five finishes, six top-10s and the DAYTONA 500 pole award in 20 starts this season.

ROAD TESTED: Bowman has two runner-up finishes on road courses in his time at Hendrick Motorsports — at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL in 2019 and Circuit of The Americas (COTA) in 2022. The Tucson, Arizona, native is one of two drivers with multiple second-place showings without a win on this track type. Earlier this year, he finished third at COTA for his fourth career top-five result at a road course.

INDY FLASHBACK: Last year, Bowman pulled double duty at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, running the No. 17 HENDRICKCARS.COM Chevrolet Camaro for Hendrick Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series on Saturday before Sunday’s Cup Series race. He started the Xfinity race in fourth and finished the first stage in third en route to his runner-up result at the 2.439-mile road course. Bowman will run next weekend’s Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen International in the No. 17 HENDRICKCARS.COM Chevy.

HARRIS IN INDY: No. 48 crew chief Blake Harris has one start atop the pit box at the serpentine layout of Indianapolis. The 36-year-old shot caller’s driver in 2022 started the event in seventh before finishing the 86-lap race in eighth. SAVE THEM ALL: Bowman and primary partner Ally are teaming up this year to bring back the Best Friends Animal Society donation effort. This week, the duo will make charitable contributions to Medical Mutts Service Dogs, which serves the local community in Indianapolis. Bowman and Ally will donate $4,800 to Best Friends and Medical Mutts Service Dogs. Ally will increase its donation to $10,000 if the No. 48 team wins on Sunday.

HOME SWEET HOME: No. 48 team car chief Ty Sipes hails from Bloomfield, Indiana, which is located approximately one hour and 45 minutes southwest of Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Growing up on a small hobby farm, Sipes gained experience racing at local tracks. In 2010, he started working on a small sprint car team traveling in the USAC Series. He earned his mechanical engineering degree from Purdue University in 2012 and later got an opportunity to work with Kasey Kahne’s World of Outlaws sprint car team. He joined Hendrick Motorsports during the latter part of the 2014 season and got his first Cup Series win at his home state track in 2017 on the No. 5 team of Kahne.

CLOSING IN ON 300: Hendrick Motorsports is just three points-paying victories away from its milestone 300th win in the NASCAR Cup Series. Twenty drivers have combined to reach the organization’s current total of 297, which is the most Cup Series wins by any team. With six points-paying victories in 2023, the team has posted its 36th multi-win season in the Cup Series while maintaining a streak of at least two per season for the past 30 years. The organization has gone to victory lane at more racetracks (31) than any other active team.

MILESTONE MOMENTS: In addition to 300 Cup Series wins, Hendrick Motorsports is approaching several other major milestones. With 245 pole awards, the team is just five away from 250 at the Cup level. In addition, Hendrick Motorsports engines have recorded 496 NASCAR national series victories and need just four more to reach 500.

INDIANAPOLIS INSIGHT: On the oval layout of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Hendrick Motorsports won a team-best 10 times. In two races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, the organization has a best finish of third (Kyle Larson, 2021).

RULERS OF THE ROAD: With 26 wins, Hendrick Motorsports has the most all-time triumphs on road courses in Cup Series history. The two closest teams in this statistic have combined for only 23 wins. Since its inaugural season in 1984, the organization has won 27.66% of road course events (26 wins in 94 races). The team also tops the board among Cup Series squads on road courses in poles (25), top-five finishes (85), top-10s (144), laps led (2,207) and stage wins (14).

SEVEN UP: Seven different drivers (most by a Cup Series team on road courses) have accounted for the 26 road course wins: Jeff Gordon (nine wins), Chase Elliott (seven wins), Larson (four wins), Tim Richmond (three wins), Jimmie Johnson (one win), Geoff Bodine (one win) and Ricky Rudd (one win).

POINTS MADE: Larson (102 points) and William Byron (96 points) rank third and fifth, respectively, in points earned on road courses in 2023. It’s also the Knoxville Nationals weekend, so he will be commuting back and forth and he’ll be excited about Knoxville, which is a lot of fun. On the Cup (Series) side, we’ve got to be really focused on executing a good race. We’ve been making our road course cars better this year. Hopefully, we take another step of progress in that direction, put a good car out there and execute a good race for him. It’s an exciting weekend and a lot to look forward to.”

Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on racing on the Indianapolis Road Course: “For me personally, I feel like it is one of the harder ones, if not the toughest for me. Most road courses that we go to have a little bit of character at some point, little bit of banking or a little bit of something. That place is just flat. Not really a lot of character to the road itself. Imperfections, bumps. Things like that. Just a very flat road course, which I find challenging because it’s hard to find ways to be different.”

Alan Gustafson, crew chief of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on the team’s outlook for the remainder of the regular season: “Our goal is the same as it’s always been. Go out and execute to the best of our ability, minimize mistakes and be in position to battle for the win at the end. We have three great opportunities coming up to be able to do that and Chase (Elliott) is one of the best at being able to tune out all the noise and focus on the task at hand.”

William Byron, driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on his thoughts for Indianapolis: “I think road course races are somewhere we can improve on this season. We’ve been working hard to do that and I think we’ve made improvements with each one. This weekend is a little bit different since it’s not a traditional road course. It has tight corners and straightaways, which makes for more contact between cars. With that, you can expect the aggression level to increase later in the race and for more people to get into each other to get every position they can. We’ve experienced that before, but hopefully this weekend we put ourselves in the right positions, are able to run the race we want and stay out of harms way to get a good finish.”

Rudy Fugle, crew chief of the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on the mentality of the team this week: “We’ve had a trying couple of races these last few weeks but there’s no quit in this team. We keep bringing fast race cars and doing what we can to get good results, some things just happen though. Indy (Road Course) is another track where we’ve ran well and circumstances at the end have taken us out of contention. We’ll go to the track this weekend, do our normal processes and give it everything we have. Last week is behind us and we’re focused on the three in front of us now.”

Alex Bowman, driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on the final three races in the 2023 regular season: “I think we have a shot each week to win at Hendrick Motorsports. The last few weeks we have run well and just had some bad luck. With the way this season has played out, to even be in the hunt for a spot speaks volumes about this team and how well our season started. We are all going to stay focused on the race we have each week and try to go maximize where we can.”

 CHEVROLET SETS SIGHTS ON UNIQUE TRIPLEHEADER IN INDIANAPOLIS

For the third consecutive year, the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS), NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) and NTT INDYCAR SERIES will convene to compete at one of the most iconic venues in motorsports – Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). Located within the “racing capital of the world”, the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course first hosted the unique tripleheader weekend in 2021 and continues to be the only venue in motorsport’s history to see NASCAR’s premier series and North America’s top open-wheel racing series compete at the same track on the same weekend.

Chevrolet’s rich history at Indianapolis Motor Speedway dates back to the track’s early races which saw the manufacturer’s co-founder, Louis Chevrolet, and his brothers compete. Over 111 years later, Chevrolet is gearing up to compete in the NCS, NXS and INDYCAR series at the circuit – the only manufacturer that will be represented in all three events.

Chevrolet will head into the weekend as the circuit’s defending winners in both of NASCAR’s top series with victories recorded by Tyler Reddick (No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Camaro ZL1) in the NCS and AJ Allmendinger (No. 16 Kaulig Racing Camaro SS) in the NXS. While falling one spot short of the triumph in INDYCAR’s spring appearance at the circuit, Chevrolet will make its return to the venue for the first time since Josef Newgarden drove Chevrolet to the victory in the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 earlier this year.

 GOING FOR THREE-FOR-THREE

Since the NASCAR Cup Series made its debut at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course in 2021, Chevrolet has been the only manufacturer to find its way to victory lane at the circuit. The inaugural NCS event (August 2021) at the circuit saw road course ace AJ Allmendinger drive Kaulig Racing to the organization’s first win in NASCAR’s premier series. One year later, the manufacturer found its way back to victory lane with Tyler Reddick and the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Camaro ZL1 team. The win capped off a Team Chevy weekend sweep in Indianapolis with Allmendinger taking the win in the NXS and GMS Racing’s Grant Enfinger scoring the win in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series’ (NCTS) playoff opener at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park (IRP).

Momentum sits on the side of the Bowtie brand when it comes to making left- and right-hand turns. One month ago, Chevrolet swept the top-five finishing positions in the Chicago Street Race – led by Trackhouse Racing’s Shane van Gisbergen who took the victory in his first-ever NASCAR start. Drivers from four different Chevrolet teams accompanied van Gisbergen in the top-five including Kaulig Racing’s Justin Haley (second), Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson (third and fourth, respectively) and Richard Childress Racing’s Kyle Busch (fifth).


THREE DRIVERS TABBED FOR INDY TEAM CHEVY CROSSOVER

An elite group of Chevrolet drivers have made the crossover into the NASCAR national ranks in 2023 – with three different series in which the manufacturer actively competes in having been represented in NASCAR Cup Series competition thus far this season. Sunday’s Verizon 200 at the Brickyard will once again feature a star-studded lineup, including three international superstars that will be behind the wheel of a Camaro ZL1:

Shane van Gisbergen etched his name into motorsports’ history after taking the victory in his NCS debut in the Chicago Street Race – becoming the first driver since 1963 to win in his first career NCS start. The three-time Supercars Champion will return to the seat of Trackhouse Racing’s No. 91 Camaro ZL1 this weekend for his second start in NASCAR’s top series. The Auckland, New Zealand, native competes full-time in the Supercars Championship in the No. 97 Camaro ZL1 for Triple Eight Racing Engineering – holding the title as the fourth-most successful driver in the series with 79 career wins and three championship titles (2016, 2021 & 2022). Van Gisbergen is also on the horizon of his first career start on a NASCAR oval with the Chevrolet driver also slated to compete in Friday’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at the Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Brodie Kostecki will become the second Supercars Championship driver to make his NCS debut this season. The Perth, Western Australian, native will pilot the No. 33 Camaro ZL1 this weekend – a third entry for Richard Childress Racing. Kostecki currently competes full-time in the Supercars Championship in the No. 99 Erebus Racing Camaro ZL1 – currently sitting atop the series’ points standings with a 41-point lead. While new to the NASCAR national ranks, Kostecki has previous stock car experience in the United States – making 16 starts in the ARCA Menards Series East in 2013-14.

Two-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Mike Rockenfeller will fill the seat of the No. 42 LEGACY MOTOR CLUB Camaro ZL1 for the next two NCS road course races. A veteran sports car racer, Rockenfeller has a history with LMC co-owner Jimmie Johnson – competing together in IMSA with Action Express for two seasons and, most recently, teammates in the Garage 56 program. An integral part in the development of the Garage 56 program, Rockenfeller was one of three drivers that piloted the Camaro ZL1 NASCAR Cup Series stock car at the French endurance classic.


GARAGE 56 CAMARO ZL1 TO MAKE FIRST APPEARANCE SINCE LE MANS COMPETITION

For the first time since competing in the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Garage 56 Camaro ZL1 will be making a special appearance during the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course race weekend. Situated at the Chevrolet Racing Display in the facility’s fan plaza, fans will have the opportunity to view the actual stock car that recently competed in the French endurance classic.

Chevrolet partnered with NASCAR, Hendrick Motorsports, IMSA and Goodyear to develop a modified version of the Camaro ZL1 NASCAR Cup Series stock car to compete as a Garage 56 entry. The effort marked the first time a NASCAR stock car competed at Le Mans since 1976 – with the Camaro ZL1 running 285 laps and taking the checkered flag in the prestigious endurance race. Three legendary drivers of multiple sport disciplines shared the driver’s seat of the entry including Mike Rockenfeller, who is set to compete in the NCS event at the IMS Road Course this weekend.

Chevrolet played an integral part in the Garage 56 project, including being the heart of the Camaro ZL1 with the NASCAR R07 cast-iron V8 engine – utilizing the same block, castings and pistons used in current NCS competition. Engineers and designers from Chevrolet also worked with the project’s partners to integrate working headlights, taillights, aerodynamic devices, cooling ducts for the brake system and other accessories for the car.


PLAYOFF HOPEFULS WITH ROAD COURSE SUCCESS

Three opportunities lie ahead for drivers to clinch a spot in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs – two of which come in back-to-back road course races. Of the drivers on the playoff bubble include three Team Chevy drivers that have found success in road course racing and will go into the next two races as early favorites to be the next driver to ‘win and advance’ into the 16-driver NCS playoff field.

Sitting 19th in the points standings, AJ Allmendinger knows his way to victory lane at both of the next two circuits. The 41-year-old California native has two career NCS wins to his name – his first coming in August 2014 at Watkins Glen International with JTG Daugherty Racing, and most recently, in August 2021 when he drove his Kaulig Racing Chevrolet to the win in the NCS’ debut at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course. On top of his two career NCS road course wins, the Chevrolet driver has also amassed 11 career road course victories in the NASCAR Xfinity Series – making him the only driver in series’ history to hit a double-digit win count on road courses.

Chase Elliott – who sits 22nd in the points standings – leads the series with seven career road course victories in NASCAR’s premier series. The 27-year-old Georgia native also ranks third on the NCS’ all-time road course wins list behind NASCAR Hall of Famers Jeff Gordon (nine) and Tony Stewart (eight). Two of his series-leading road course victories came at Watkins Glen International, including his first career NCS triumph (August 2018).

Following a top-10 finish at Michigan International Speedway, Daniel Suarez continues to inch his way closer to the playoff picture with the Chevrolet driver now sitting in the 18th position in the points standings and only five points below the cutline. Suarez became a first-time winner in NASCAR’s premier series on a road course circuit – taking the victory at Sonoma Raceway in 2022.


DEFENDING ON NXS ROAD COURSES

One year ago, Chevrolet collected its first NASCAR Xfinity Series win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course – a victory by road course phenom AJ Allmendinger and the No. 16 Kaulig Racing Camaro SS team. The manufacturer’s first trip to victory lane in the series at the circuit was celebrated by a top-four sweep – recorded by drivers from four different Chevrolet teams.

The Bowtie brand is also the series’ most recent winner when it comes to making left- and right-hand turns – courtesy of JR Motorsports’ Sam Mayer’s victory at Road America just two weeks ago. The victory marked the manufacturer’s second NXS road course win of the season – the first coming at Circuit of The Americas in March (AJ Allmendinger, No. 16 Kaulig Racing Camaro SS).

GREEN FLAG ON THE NCTS TITLE RUN

Five drivers from five different Chevrolet teams are set to compete for the 2023 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship title with the first of three races in the Round of 10 taking place Friday night at the Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. The NCTS has competed at the 0.686-mile short-track 18 times with Chevrolet collecting a series-leading 10 victories at the venue. The manufacturer’s most recent triumph at the track came one year ago – a race that saw GMS Racing’s Grant Enfinger take the win and the first spot in the NCTS’ Playoffs Round of Eight.

Heading into the series’ title run, Chevrolet’s Carson Hocevar, Christian Eckes and Grant Enfinger – each already making repeat visits to victory lane this season – sit in the third through fifth positions, respectively, in the playoff standings. NCTS rookie Nick Sanchez (eighth) and Matt DiBenedetto (ninth) were two of four drivers that pointed their way into the post-season.

“No, I don’t think so. Shane was the new guy going into Chicago so he didn’t get first pick of the simulator times for that weekend. He went Thursday night to the simulator when the haulers were already gone and they couldn’t change the car. I got to see some of the stuff once we got to the track, and obviously after practice and qualifying we saw that he was good and looked through some of his stuff.”

You’ve won at COTA; do you feel like your road course game is pretty good going into the next two weeks?

“It’s a constant evolution and labor of love. I had never turned right before until I was in the Truck in 2013 at Mosport. I realized that weekend I had a lot of work to do. I’m not satisfied with how I turn right at all. Shane opened our eyes to a lot of things and we’ve looked at that. Going to tracks without walls everywhere like Chicago and tracks that I’ve been to before like the next two coming up will help. It’s constant work for me though. I’ve been putting in the work so we’ll see if it pays off.”

Will you feel less like a pinball going into Turn 1 at Indy since NASCAR has altered restart zone at Indy road course?

“I didn’t feel like one last year because I took the other way which is now a stop and go penalty. It’s trying to help make us look like the incredible race car drivers that we all are so I think it will be good.”

How do you approach the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course race given the points situation you are in?

“At this point, we can’t make it into the NASCAR Playoffs on points. We have to win. That gives us the opportunity to be aggressive, and to make moves and strategy calls that maybe you otherwise wouldn’t if you were racing for points. We’re going to be aggressive. Anybody can win right now, including us, so we have to really focus. We’ve had moments throughout the season where we’ve been really fast. Things have to line up and we have to have a perfect day in order to get to Victory Lane. That means I have to do my job; the pit crew has to do their job and the strategy has to play out. In the SIM, I’ve been pretty good at the Indianapolis Road Course. It was a little surprising, actually, how the track came to me right away. I’d like to surprise some people at a road course.”

You have the Cowboy Channel and the Carolina Cowboys on your car this weekend. What does that mean to you, to be able to represent the western lifestyle at a NASCAR race?

“Man, I love having the Carolina Cowboys and the Cowboy Channel on our Chevy this weekend. It’s really the intersection of my two favorite things. Racing, obviously, takes up a lot of my time, but so do my western interests. I’m always watching the Cowboy Channel and the Cowboy Channel Plus app, so I really want to thank Patrick Goetsch and everyone on his team for this opportunity. I also can’t wait to highlight the Carolina Cowboys on the car. I hope everyone is able to come out to our home event at the Greensboro Coliseum Sept. 22-24. What challenges arise with competing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course?

“I would say the challenges at the Indy Road Course are the visuals, especially braking visuals in traffic. It’s so flat and a lot of corners are so slow that when the track gets hot and it gets slick it really slows down a lot. Trying to keep the tires on the car under braking and also under acceleration is a challenge. It’s really flat and you’re always trying to make sure that you can go as fast as you can, carry as much speed as you possibly can, but keep the brakes on the car because there’s a lot of heavy braking areas at the Indianapolis Road Course.”

The restarts going into Turn 1 at Indy are chaotic. How do you protect your position and stay out of trouble?

“Restarts going into Turn 1 are chaotic. The best way to protect yourself is to stay all the way to the inside to the right-side of the racetrack and not let anybody to your inside. You can be the guy that kind of forces everybody off into Turn 1 and puts them in the grass because if you’re on the outside and get put off in the grass then you’re losing spots. That happened to me last year, but hopefully moving the restart zone a little bit will kind of help that calamity and calm everything down.”

There are no stage cautions on road courses this season. Do you think that’s a good move?

“No stage cautions at road courses I think is a smart way to go. Last year everybody would always pit before a stage caution would come out. Then when the caution came out nobody would pit or guys would actually flip the stages where they would run it long and not pit and take the points then they’d have to come in and pit. It just makes it a heck of a lot more simple to run it out and allows there to be more strategy within the race for when guys want to pit, if they want to make it a two-stop race or a three-stop race. I think that’s a good move.”

You have two wins at Indy on the oval. How special would it be to win on the road course?

“I’ve got two wins on the Indy oval so it would be really cool to win on the Indy road course to have won at multiple layouts at the same venue. I look at the Charlotte Roval as kind of the same thing there too, with winning on the big track and I would love to be able to win on the Roval there. The Indianapolis Road Course is still sacred ground and what that place means history-wise with everything from the Pagoda to celebrating by kissing the bricks. It would certainly be cool to chalk up another win there and have it be on the road course.”

Elliott on racing on the Indianapolis Road Course:

“For me personally, I feel like it is one of the harder ones, if not the toughest for me. Most road courses that we go to have a little bit of character at some point, little bit of banking or a little bit of something. That place is just flat. Not really a lot of character to the road itself. Imperfections, bumps. Things like that. Just a very flat road course, which I find challenging because it’s hard to find ways to be different.”

“Our goal is the same as it’s always been. Go out and execute to the best of our ability, minimize mistakes and be in position to battle for the win at the end. We have three great opportunities coming up to be able to do that and Chase (Elliott) is one of the best at being able to tune out all the noise and focus on the task at hand.”

“Indy has been different the last couple of years since it’s now a road course, but still going to the track itself and having the chance to be there is always a lot of fun. Last year, we ended up being in a spin that cost us track position at the end of the day, and we didn’t come home with the finish we wanted. However, we still felt like it was an okay day with a decent car that got up there. Regardless of that outcome, I feel like our road course performance has been improving. In Chicago, I believe we didn’t get the finish we deserved, but our car had a lot more speed than our previous attempts at road courses. So, I am excited to get there and hopefully secure a top-10 finish at a road course.”

“It (Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course) will certainly be different than the Chicago Street Course. I’ll need to get up to speed quickly, but we plan a lot of simulator time and I know (No. 91 Crew Chief) Darian (Grubb) will be thoroughly prepared for Indy.

We have got to come in and do our best, but you also have got to race with respect, as well. These guys are fighting for their championship every week, so I have got to come in and stay out of trouble.”

What are your thoughts going to Indianapolis?

“We just have to be smart. We need to do what we do and stay out of trouble and get good finishes. When we are in sync we are a team that is hard to beat.

Our goal at Michigan was to have a good execution race, and build some momentum heading into Indianapolis where we know we are going to be good. I think we did that and are in a pretty good spot.

You have to keep in mind, with two road courses and a superspeedway, anything can happen. Sometimes with the strategy and the way people push and move around at the end of these races on road courses it can be a wild card. Obviously, anything can happen at Daytona as well. We just have to maximize every day and continue to work.”

CHASE PURDY, NO. 4 BAMA BUGGIES SILVERADO RST

With not being in the playoffs, how do you approach the rest of the season?

“Honestly, more than ever we are hungrier, and our only goal is to go out and win races. At Richmond, I felt like we were on the wrong end of a judgement call and if we weren’t then we probably had the fastest truck there and had a good shot at the win. We need to move on from it and take it and let it fuel us for the rest of the season. We need to finish strong. We’re going to chase wins — we have nothing to lose now.”

IRP has a unique configuration. How do you attack that track?

“I’ve raced there two times before and had a shot at winning there a few years ago. It’s a track that I’m familiar with and have been able to be fast at. You need to have a truck that will keep turning and have good drive up off the corners. It’s just like every other worn-out short track; you have to take care of your stuff and be there at the end. Short tracks are my specialty, and we have a lot of them coming up on the schedule, so I’m really, really excited and hungrier than ever to try and get this Bama Buggies Silverado in victory lane.”

CHRISTIAN ECKES, NO. 19 NAPA AUTOCARE SILVERADO RST

Eckes his outlook for his third playoff run:

“Our NAPA Auto Care team is looking forward to the challenge of racing for a championship. This week at IRP will definitely be a tough test for sure. I didn’t run the way I wanted to last year at IRP, but I’m confident in our No. 19 team and the effort everyone’s been putting in at MHR. We’ve adjusted our goals a little bit as the year has gone and we’ve won some races, been more consistent lately, and we know we’re capable of getting to Phoenix and racing for a championship. We’re focused on this week though and putting a solid night together at IRP.”

GRANT ENFINGER, NO. 23 CHAMPION POWER EQUIPMENT SILVERADO RST

You’ve got to feel good about returning to IRP after last season, so what did you learn during that race last year that will help your team be even better this time?

“I’m excited to get the playoffs started, and I feel good about starting it out at IRP. Our GMS Racing guys are working hard to bring us just as good of a Champion Power Equipment Chevy as we had last year. I think that IRP is a great track for the Truck Series. It has multiple grooves we can choose, but it’s still a tough short track with a lot of character.”

RAJAH CARUTH, NO. 24 WENDELL SCOTT FOUNDATION SILVERADO RST

You’ve said that IRP is going to be one of the more challenging races for you personally, so can you say why that might be the case?

“It’ll be a challenge for me mostly because short tracking isn’t something I consider myself to be exceptional at, meaning I’ve got to put twice as much emphasis on it as an oppose to my big track skill set, which I feel like I’m solid on so far. Certainly my expectations shift from the short to the big tracks. However I know that our team has race-winning pace at this track, as shown last year, so having that knowledge is going to be invaluable. Our Wendell Scott Foundation Born Driven paint scheme has one last ride with us this season, so I’m looking forward to running it again and hopefully we can finish off what we started in Nashville with this truck.”

JAKE GARCIA, NO. 35 QUANTA SERVICES SILVERADO RST

Garcia on his recent momentum entering IRP:

“To get at top-five at Richmond felt great. That was probably the best complete weekend we’ve put together with our Quanta Services Chevrolet this season. It felt great to race in and around the top-five all night and we want to do the same thing this week at IRP. It’s a fun but challenging place. There are some different options with the variable banking but can make it difficult to pass too. Hopefully we can qualify well again like we have been recently and that’ll give us a good opportunity to race towards the front all night.”

Does having a strong finish at this track last year give you an extra boost of confidence heading back to IRP?

“We were pretty fast last year at IRP in the ARCA race. The GMS guys brought us a really fast car, but it was a tricky place to figure out. As the race went on, I figured out how to pass other drivers as we had to kind of come up through the field from where we started. So I’m looking forward to getting back there knowing what I know now. It’s going to be cool to go there with Bettenhausen Automotive and have them on our truck with that cool sprint car throwback paint scheme. Hopefully we can have a good run; the trucks are a bit different than the ARCA cars, so they’ll probably turn a little bit better than how we were last year. Just got to be ready for that and make sure we can finish it off with a good result. Our speed has been building over the last couple of months, but we have to make sure that we can put it all together and finish the race where we run. It’s all going to be about building on it little by little, and continuing to improve on how we unload.”

JACK WOOD, NO. 51 ROWDY MANUFACTURING SILVERADO RST

How hard is it having breaks in your schedule behind the wheel of the No. 51 truck?

“It has its ups and downs; it was nice to have time to kind of travel a little bit and spend time with friends and family. I’ll go to the simulator before the race this week and knock some of the rust off and try to get in some other vehicles before the race this weekend.”

IRP has a unique configuration. How do you attack that track?

“It reminds me a lot of a track that I grew up racing at in Southern California — Irwindale (Speedway). It’s a cool track to go to with the trucks and I think that it will race really well. Last year it was a struggle for me to get that place figured out, but the KBM stuff was really fast there last year and the short track program this year in general at KBM has been really strong, so I’m excited to go there with the 51 guys.”

Do you approach this race differently with the 51 team being in the owner’s playoffs?

“You think about it, but in the end, I just have to go out there and do my job. The trucks obviously have speed — Kyle’s been able to win the two races and bring home the 100th win for KBM. We are going to do our best to get the 51 team as far as we can in the owner’s playoffs and if we can just go out and execute, I think that we will be just fine.”

  • Cole Custer and the No. 00 Haas Automation Ford Mustang team for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) head to Saturday’s Indianapolis 150 looking for a third road-course victory in the first six races this year where Custer turned both left and right. He parked his Ford Mustang in victory lane twice thus far – June 3 at Portland (Ore.) International Raceway and July 1 in the Inaugural Chicago Street Race. He added a sixth-place finish June 10 on the road course at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway. While he has yet to compete on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in the Xfinity Series, Custer has proven the unknown doesn’t waver him or his team. Both victories this season came in his first Xfinity Series starts at each respective track.
  • While Saturday’s Indianapolis 150 will mark Custer’s first Xfinity Series start on the Indy road course, he does have two NASCAR Cup Series starts on the circuit with a best finish of ninth, earned in July 2022. It was one of his 12 Cup Series top-10s in 115 career starts. Custer also has three Xfinity Series starts and one Cup Series start on the iconic 2.5-mile Indianapolis oval on which the series raced until the 2021 season. He finished fifth in his lone Cup Series start on the oval in July 2020, and has a best finish of fifth, earned in July 2017, among his three Xfinity Series starts on the oval. He added a seventh-place finish in his most recent Xfinity Series start on the oval in September 2019.
  • Five races remain before the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs begin Sept. 15 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. Custer may have already locked in his spot in the 12-driver playoff field by virtue of his two wins, but he’s still on the hunt for more playoff points to help him through the postseason. He and the team plan to use the final races of the regular season to perfect their performance before racing for the championship in earnest. Prior to this season, Custer finished second in the Xfinity Series championship standings in both 2018 and 2019.

Riley Herbst Notes of Interest

  • Riley Herbst and the No. 98 Monster Energy team for SHR are looking to keep the momentum rolling as they head to Saturday’s Indianapolis 150 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. After a roller coaster of a season that started with six consecutive top-10 finishes, Herbst’s midseason struggles began when an accident took him out of contention for a win at Richmond (Va.) Raceway on April 5. When the team returned from its summer break June 24 at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway, Herbst found himself back on track with the addition of a new crew chief, Davin Restivo. In their seven races together, Herbst and Restivo have scored four top-10 finishes, including a second-place run in their initial race together at Nashville. At Michigan last weekend, the team looked to be on track for another top-five finish, but as the race ran green down the stretch, Herbst ran out of time to catch the leaders after green-flag pit stops and ultimately had to settle for a sixth-place finish, his best in four races on the 2-mile oval.
  • Saturday’s race on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn Indianapolis road course will mark Herbst’s third Xfinity Series start at the track. He posted back-to-back top-10 finishes in his last two starts there in August 2021 and July 2022 – finishes of eighth and sixth, respectively. Both came with SHR in the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang. In addition, Herbst led three laps in 2021 and contended for stage wins in his first season with the team.
  • With five races remaining before the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs begin Sept. 15 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Herbst is currently defending his spot in the 12-driver playoff field and trying to continue working his way higher in the standings. He sits ninth in the regular-season standings but 10th in the playoff standings thanks to his string of strong finishes since Herbst’s fourth-place result on July 22 at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway. That finish, plus his fifth-place finish July 29 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, and the sixth-place finish last Saturday at Michigan, helped him extend his buffer over 13th-place Parker Kligerman from 18 to 40 points. In addition, last weekend’s result kept him ahead of Sheldon Creed in the playoff standings. The Monster Energy driver is in position to secure his top-12 position on points, but a win would guarantee Herbst a spot in the postseason. Meanwhile, he and the team are focused on continuing their top-10 streak through the regular-season finale on Sept. 9 at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City to lock themselves into the playoffs for the fourth time in Herbst’s four fulltime seasons.

While you haven’t had any NASCAR Xfinity Series starts on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, you do have two Cup Series starts there with a best finish of ninth earned last year. How does that experience in the Cup Series help you navigate this weekend?

“Honestly, it just helps having laps on that layout. You have to be confident in knowing where all the corners are – there are 14 of them. It helps you in advance to know what to expect in those turns even if the cars are completely different. The Indianapolis road course is definitely going to be a challenge, but we have practice and qualifying to hopefully get our No. 00 Haas Automation Ford just right on Saturday. Road courses have been good to the team this season, so we hope to keep that rolling.”

One of the most iconic traditions of being a victor at the Brickyard is to kiss the bricks. Your boss Tony Stewart took it a step further after his two victories and climbed the fence. What would it mean to you to kiss the bricks, and would you also climb the fence?

“To kiss the bricks would be huge. That’s every racecar driver’s dream. You grow up wanting to kiss the bricks at Indianapolis because you’ve seen your idols do it before you. It’s always a big race that we have circled on the NASCAR schedule. You want to go and win there just so you can do that. Not sure if I would climb the fence, but we’re definitely kissing the bricks. Hopefully, we can get it done this week.”

You’re coming off a string of strong finishes for you and the No. 98 Monster Energy team. What do you think you’ll need this weekend in order to keep that momentum rolling and continue your goal of securing a spot in the playoffs?

“We just need to keep doing what we’ve been doing. Davin (Restivo, crew chief) has been bringing me fast racecars and the pit crew has been giving me amazing stops every weekend. We’ve been in contention and knocking down top-10s, now it’s just a matter of parking our No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang in victory lane. Honestly, I think it can happen any weekend as long as we have the fast car, good strategy, and no mistakes. I’m proud of how this team has rebounded from our string of bad races in the middle of the season. We seem to be getting back on track, and we’ll continue to show that this weekend.”

You’ve been so close to your first Xfinity Series victory this season, and it seems like you’re almost there. What would it mean to you to get your first career victory at the iconic Brickyard and kiss the bricks?

“It would mean a lot for many different reasons. I feel like we’ve been so close to my first career victory, and it just makes it more disappointing the longer we have to wait for it. On top of that, every young racer dreams of winning at Indianapolis. It’s one of racing’s most iconic tracks, and it’s an honor to go to victory lane there. To kiss the bricks on Saturday would just be that much sweeter when you combine it with it being a first career win for myself. We’ve run well there the past few years, so hopefully we can bring the fast racecar that we’ve had the past few weeks and get it done.”

● By The Numbers: Sunday’s race will mark Preece’s second start on the Indianapolis road course. His first race on the circuit came in 2021 for JTG-Daugherty Racing. He started 30th and was credited with a 35th-place finish after being involved in an incident on lap 77. In the season’s first road-course race March 26 at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, Preece started 26th and was vying for a solid top-10 finish before being spun during the final restart, leaving him with a 32nd-place finish. In the season’s second road-course race June 11 at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway, Preece started 22nd and finished 13th. Preece competed in the ARCA Menards West race at Sonoma to gain extra seat time on the road course. He started on the pole and won the race after leading 50 laps. When the series conducted its first-ever street race July 2 in downtown Chicago, Preece started 28th and finished 15th. The No. 41 team has shown improvements on road courses and hope that will continue this weekend in Indianapolis.

● Motorsports Engineer at Purdue University in Indianapolis: The only ABET-accredited undergraduate motorsports engineering program in the country is found at Purdue University in Indianapolis. The program began in 2008 and was accredited in 2016. It welcomed a record 110-member freshman class last fall. The program is driving motorsports engineering forward and fueling the entire industry from the “Racing Capital of the World.” Purdue-Indy had students or graduates in 32 of the 33-car field in the 2022 Indianapolis 500. The Purdue School of Engineering & Technology and the program’s automotive lab in the Stutz Building are located fewer than 5 miles from the racetrack. Graduates from the Purdue-Indy motorsports engineering program have moved on to IndyCar, IMSA and NHRA. They’ve also ventured into the motorsports manufacturing world at companies like Allison Transmissions, Dallara (USA), and Cummins. The program recruits nationally, with more out-of-state than in-state students enrolled.

● Last Weekend: Last weekend on the 2-mile oval at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Preece and the No. 41 team qualified 29th on Saturday. In the opening stage of the race that began on Sunday, Preece felt his car was “pretty good, but a little bit too tight.” Once the team loosened it up, his Ford Mustang wasn’t far from where he wanted it to be, but the weather delayed the remainder of the race until Monday afternoon. Once the race returned to green, Preece told his team the car just felt completely different. He battled hard all day and had a right-rear tire go down, leading to an unscheduled pit stop. He finished the race 22nd.

● Where He Stands: Preece heads to Indianapolis 25th in the driver standings with 397 points.

● Baby Girl Preece: Preece and his wife Heather welcomed their first child at 5:30 a.m. EDT Monday. Rebecca Marie Preece was 6 pounds, 10 ounces and 20 inches long. Mom and baby are both healthy and the new parents couldn’t be more excited to welcome Rebecca, the newest member of the SHR family.

It seems like Indianapolis Motor Speedway is always really special for drivers because of its history. What are you most looking forward to this weekend?
“For me, I enjoy the road courses and I think they’re always another opportunity to win – for sure. I’ve always been a huge fan of the Brickyard and the oval, but I think the road racing can definitely kind of put a variable in there that maybe we can squeeze one out. But it’s really just a special place, there’s so much history there on the oval, it’s special to be able to look back and say you’ve raced at a track like Indy. I think there’s some added confidence, too, knowing that I’ve had some decent finishes at road courses, and they’re so unpredictable.”

You won the ARCA Menards Series West race at Sonoma Raceway earlier this season and then finished in the top 15 at Sonoma and the Chicago Street Course in the Cup Series. Does that give you any extra confidence?
“Yeah, I mean, it’s nice to know that I can compete on the road courses and run up front and win. I was never a road-course guy, so these types of tracks and those races on the schedule are ones that we’ve really emphasized and worked on. Now that we’re a few road races in, I am definitely a bit more confident at those tracks, more now than I was before. I’m excited to get there and get a feel for the track and my car during practice so we can qualify well and get a good starting position. These races are all about track position. If you start back in the field, it’s going to be really tough to move to the front and stay out of trouble, so we want to be fast right when we unload and show the rest of the field that we’re there, and there to win.”

Your team just announced a partnership with Purdue University at Indianapolis for this weekend. Purdue has been heavily involved in Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a long time. What’s it like having the school on your No. 41 Ford Mustang this weekend?
“It’s an honor to represent Purdue University in Indianapolis this weekend at the Brickyard. Indy is filled with history and prestige, and competing there is truly special. To have the gold-and-black colors of the Boilermakers on my car just adds to that prestige, as I’ve come to understand Purdue’s own history at Indianapolis. I’m impressed by the program Purdue University has for students looking to make a career in motorsports. Creative, hard-working people can thrive in racing. Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the better you are. To be able to showcase Purdue’s comprehensive urban campus in Indianapolis makes me proud.”

21 Team Looking For Another Strong Run On Indy Road Course

After celebrating a triumphant performance by their manufacturer, Ford Motor Company, at Michigan International Speedway on Monday, Harrison Burton and the No. 21 DEX Imaging team are preparing for Sunday’s race on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“This past weekend in Michigan was a great weekend for Ford and a solid result for the Wood Brothers,” crew chief Brian Wilson said of the No. 21 team’s drive from 29th place at the green flag to 17th at the checkered in a race won by Chris Buescher in his No. 17 Mustang.

“Congrats to everyone within Ford Performance for the ninth consecutive win in Michigan.

“Our pace was very competitive and seeing a Ford win shows that everyone within our group has been fighting hard to improve and be ready for the playoff stretch.”

Wilson and the team have reason to be optimistic headed into the weekend as Burton scored a Cup-career-best third-place finish on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn course inside the 2.5-mile Indy oval.

“Last year’s race at Indianapolis was a great result for everyone on the DEX Ford team and still our best finish as a group,” Wilson said. “Harrison did an incredible job on all the late-race restarts and chaos to march forward.”

The 2023 edition of the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard presents a new set of challenges.

“As we prepare for this weekend’s race we’re studying the changes over the past year,” Wilson said. “This year’s aero rules have taken away a large portion of total downforce. But we also had a rule change on floor sealing last year after this race which added some downforce back.

“And this year’s tire is softer than last year, which also adds mechanical grip.

Wilson said he believes the DEX Imaging team is well positioned to adapt to the changes since last year.

“Everyone on the team is excited to head to such an iconic venue like Indy and hopefully improve on last year’s finish,” he said.

Practice for the Verizon 200 is set for Saturday at 11:35 a.m. Eastern Time and will be followed by qualifying at 12:35. TV coverage on Saturday will be provided by USA Network.

Sunday’s 82-lap race is scheduled to get the green flag just after 2:30 p.m. with TV coverage on NBC. Stage breaks are planned for Lap 15 and 35.

DETROIT (August 10, 2023) – The heartland hosts the 13th round of the 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing season, with Team Chevy heading to Heartland Motorsports Park for the Menards NHRA Nationals presented by PetArmor this weekend near Topeka, Kan.

Facing a Round 1 elimination redemption from 2022, the Top Fuel teams of Austin Prock and Brittany Force at John Force Racing, enter this weekend eyeing Topeka for a momentum shift. “We’ve had a great car the last few weekends and are looking to prove that to everyone this weekend,” Prock said. “John Force Racing has had a history of wins in Topeka, and I would like to add our Montana Brand team to that list for the last stand at Heartland Motorsports Park.”

In Funny Car, 16-time Funny Car champion and drag racing legend John Force, of John Force Racing, looks to finish one position better this year after racing to the final round and earning runner-up versus Bob Tasca, III. After facing elimination from Force in the 2022 semifinals, Robert Hight also looks to advance to the NHRA Winner’s Circle at Heartland Motorsports Park this weekend for what would be his 64th career victory.

Returning to action this weekend, the Chevrolet Pro Stock teams look to go back-to-back for the Bowtie brand in the heartland, with Troy Coughlin, Jr. defending his 2022 victory at Heartland Motorsports Park, in addition to being the most recent Pro Stock winner at Bandimere Speedway near Denver in July.

● Race week at Indianapolis Motor Speedway means the return of HighPoint.com to Chase Briscoe’s Ford Mustang. It’s a partnership that began in 2020 after a chance meeting in Las Vegas. ● As a child growing up in Mitchell, Indiana, Briscoe dreamed of going from the dirt track to the Indy oval, just like his hero and Indiana native Tony Stewart. Though the 2020 win didn’t come on the iconic 2.-5-mile oval, it was one for the record books as Briscoe became the first driver to win a NASCAR race on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn Indy road course. He had watched Stewart pilot his NASCAR Cup Series car on Sundays before he headed back to the bullrings to compete in his dirt car. Stewart, the Brickyard 400 winner in 2005 and 2007, ran several races against his father Kevin, giving the youngest Briscoe plenty of time to learn how best to emulate his hero. He kneeled in front of the Yard of Bricks in his HighPoint.com firesuit and finally took his turn to kiss the bricks as he had dreamed of doing as a kid growing up in Mitchell. The 2020 season continued with a playoff berth that carried all the way to the championship race in Phoenix. Briscoe didn’t earn the title that year, but the support from HighPoint.com allowed Briscoe to continue chasing his dream as the next driver of the No. 14 Ford Mustang in the Cup Series.

● Briscoe’s first visit to Indy in 2021 as the driver of the No. 14 first piloted by his idol Stewart was nearly a win for the SHR team. He qualified second, his best qualifying effort of the year, took the lead on lap two of the race, and finished the first stage ninth. Briscoe struggled late in the race, but a series of restarts during the closing laps put Briscoe back in contention. Restarting third for the second attempt at a green-white-checkered finish in overtime, Briscoe was shoved off track going into turn one. He returned to the track and made a move on leader Denny Hamlin to take the top spot, but Briscoe wasn’t aware he was under penalty for not following protocol in his return to the track. He made contact with the leader and was parked for the final lap of the race. He had come so close to returning to victory lane at Indy, but his move had angered Hamlin, who felt Briscoe had been too aggressive. Briscoe stood his ground while Stewart watched on with pride.

● In the 2022 edition of the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard, Briscoe started third and won the first stage. After pitting, the HighPoint.com team struggled to make its way back to the front and the result was a 23rd-place finish.

● Prior to making his third Cup Series start at Indy on Sunday, Briscoe will make the two-hour drive to Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, to compete in the Superstar Racing Experience’s Thursday Night Thunder. He’s competed at the Eldora half-mile dirt oval four times – three in the NASCAR Truck Series, earning heat race wins in 2018 and 2019, and earning the golden shovel as the feature winner in 2018. Last year, he competed in Stewart’s Eldora Million Late Model race. What sets this visit apart from the others is that, for the first time in his career, Briscoe will compete against his childhood hero.

What are your earliest memories of racing at Indy, as a fan or driver?

“One of my first racing memories is going to get my first firesuit. It was across from the tunnel in turns one and two at Indy. The guy’s name was Jim Bob Luger and he would do embroidery on uniforms. I remember going there, getting my first uniform, driving up to the end to get our first Quarter Midget and racing in Indy, for my first-ever race. So, I just felt like every time you were going to Indy, it meant you’re going to get something racing-related. As a kid, I didn’t really go to Indy outside of that, so it was always about racing. The first time I ever saw the speedway, I remember just being blown away by how big it was.”

A lot of your childhood was spent sitting at the back of a dirt hauler watching your father (Kevin Briscoe) and grandfather (Richard Briscoe) work on Sprint Cars. How does it feel to be reliving that in your own way now with your son Brooks traveling with you to dirt races and Cup Series races?

“I don’t remember those moments from when I was that little, but I’ve obviously seen the pictures and it’s cool to look back on that and see me being around the track with guys that are legends in the dirt world. I remember probably around when I was four or five, maybe six years old, always going to the racetrack and playing. It was just normal to be there, so these are memories that Brooks won’t necessarily remember. But I’ll definitely remember this, similar to how my mom and dad do. Getting to see him in all of these different scenarios and experiences and how into racing that he is right now has been a lot of fun for me. He is very aware of what is happening at the racetrack and pays attention to every little thing, so these are times that I’m enjoying now and can’t wait to tell him about when he’s older.”

When you won at Indy in 2020, Richard (Boswell) wasn’t at the track due to a suspension. You two are working together again and HighPoint.com is once again on the car. All these pieces are realigning, so what would it mean to win at Indy with him now in the crew chief role on the No. 14 HighPoint.com Mustang?

“When Boswell came over to the No. 14, I felt like there was a new confidence there just from the success that we’ve had in the past. He knows how significant Indy weekend is for me and the pressure I put on myself. When you add the scenario we’re in now from a points standpoint, there’s pressure every weekend. But I do think this team understands what this weekend means to me, and I feel like even they try to find that extra one- or two-percent effort to put into the car that weekend. There’s definitely confidence going there, and we’ve been good at Indy, we just haven’t been able to put it together. I’d love to do that with this team, with Richard and with HighPoint. I don’t think I’d have a career without HighPoint.com, and everyone knows how they came in at the last second to make sure I was in the No. 98 in 2020. Mike and the entire Mendiburu family mean a lot to me, and it would be awesome to get them in victory lane. We’ve won a lot of races with HighPoint.com on the car, but they’ve never been at track for them, including at Indy in 2020, so I’d like to be able to do that for all of us.”

Before we get to Indy, you’re heading to Eldora for the SRX race. Why was this week’s race the one you wanted to participate in?

“Eldora, in general, is special to me. Growing up as a kid in dirt racing, Eldora was kind of my version of Daytona. If you got to race at Eldora, that meant that you’re a hard-core dirt guy, especially if you could win there. So, for me just getting to run Eldora is special, but the biggest draw for me to run SRX was just the fact that I’ve never been able to race against Tony (Stewart). I felt like this would be my only opportunity to ever do that in my career and that’s why I pushed so hard to keep wearing them out about doing it. I knew that opportunity was getting smaller and smaller and I just wanted to be able to say I’d done it at some point in my career.”

If it comes down to you and Tony at the end, what can we expect?

“I’ll try not to do what I did at Bristol Dirt the first year. I would rather not get punched by Tony. But obviously, I feel like I need to go beat him just from a job security standpoint. If there’s going to be anybody I race with more respect than anybody else, it’s going to be him. It’ll be fun just to get out there and finally share the racetrack with him. It’s crazy to think how many times when I was growing up that I pictured driving his car and that I was him. Now, to finally share the racetrack with him is going to be really special for me. Hopefully I can go and beat him. But regardless, it’s going to be a really cool moment for me. I’m sure it doesn’t mean absolutely anything to him, but for me it will mean a lot.”
