Nemechek wins his first Truck Series race of the season at Darlington

John Hunter Nemechek was fastest in practice, won the pole and led a race-high 69 laps en route to his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series win of the season Friday night at Darlington Raceway. But it was not without its challenges.

He survived 10 cautions, an additional pit stop under caution during Stage 2 due to a loose wheel and an overtime restart to earn his 12th career win in the series.

“Just a huge shout-out to all the guys that work on this No. 4 KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports) Toyota Tundra,” he said. “I thought we gave it away early, honestly, and we were able to rebound and battle back. I learned a lot tonight. I was finally able to bring home the first win of the year.”

Niece Motorsports driver Carson Hocevar won Stage 2 and finished 0.552 seconds behind Nemechek in his No. 42 Chevrolet to claim second, his fourth top-10 this season. It was the second consecutive runner-up finish for Hocevar who said he was experiencing electrical issues.

“Every once in a while it would stumble, and it flat out shut off in the middle of 1 and 2 coming to the white (flag).”

Grant Enfinger was third, followed by Ty Majeski, Parker Kligerman, Ryan Preece, Zane Smith, Tyler Ankrum, Todd Bodine, and Matt DiBenedetto to complete the top-10 finishers at Darlington.

Matt Crafton, who was originally scored in fifth, was disqualified during post-race inspection for his Truck being too low in front.

Dean Thompson was the highest finishing rookie in 15th place. There were 16 lead changes among nine drivers, with 10 cautions for 54 laps.

Ben Rhodes leads the driver standings with 284 points, followed by Nemechek (254), Chandler Smith (252), Stewart Friesen (242) and Zane Smith (241) in fifth.

Chase Elliott confident his team can ‘run and compete with the best of the garage’

Chase Elliott scored his first win of the season last week at Dover Motor Speedway, effectively putting to rest any concerns that he or his team were struggling this year.

Elliott, however, was never worried.

“I feel like we’ve been solid at times,” he said, “and had a lot of pace. We just hadn’t been able to put an entire race together until last Sunday. We just have to do more of that and try to be better, better execute the entirety of an event. I think as long as we’re doing those things, I think we can run and compete with the best of the garage. I feel confident in that; just as confident in that today as I did three weeks ago.”

And though it may have seemed that he was not performing as well as expected, Elliott has led the driver standings since his sixth-place finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway, the fifth race of the Cup Series season.

He’s in good company as Chevrolet teams have won seven of the races this year while Fords and Toyotas have only two wins each.

“I think it’s like what my dad has always said over the years and has tried to teach me; it’s a rollercoaster and it’s going to continue to evolve. There is going to be a time where that’s not the case. I’m a Chevy guy and I want that to always be the case. But that’s just not how it works.

“You’re going to go through periods where you’re going to struggle and you’re going to have to go back to work and get better. I think 2016, ’17, ’18 – I guess more ’17 and ’18 – we were certainly behind and needed to be better. We tried to come together as a manufacturer and, fortunately, we were able to do that. I think Chevrolet should take a lot of pride in that, and the teams within that banner should take a lot of pride in that, too.

“I can’t say that anything just miraculously changed overnight. I think it’s just the way this deal works. You’re going to go through those periods and you have to ride that wave while it’s good in a positive manner, just like you do when it’s bad. And just accept that’s the way it’s going to be sometimes. That can be a hard thing to accept in certain periods, but I am a believer that I think that’s just how this works and I don’t ever see that really changing.”

Looking ahead to Sunday’s Goodyear 400, Elliott is unsure what to expect with inconsistent results the last couple of years. In 2020, he had finishes of fourth (May 17), 38th (May 20) and 20th in September. Last year he finished seventh in May and 31st in September.

“I feel like we’ve been really sporadic here for whatever reason,” he said. “Hopefully, this week is better.”

Is Engine Braking bad for your Motorcycle?

When the throttle is open, it works in the essence that the piston pulls air and fuel to the cylinder during the intake stroke. Therefore, if you try and block the throttle, the piston is in the process of drawing air, but because the throttle is closed, it essentially sucks against a closed tube. This creates a vacuum which essentially puts a drag on the piston, making it slow down, which makes the rare wheel slow down too, thus bringing the braking effect to the Motorcycle. 

Although, it is also influenced by some factors that determine the braking effect’s power, and the major one is the engine rpm. After closing the throttle, your Motorcycle’s engine consists of a higher rpm, the higher the suction it will produce. Thus, the greater the engine braking effect, and thus one can increase the braking effect by downshifting a gear or two. 

Is the engine braking badly for the engine?

The perfect answer is No; however, some major concerns make some people view it as not good for the engine. During the process of engine braking, it causes the engine to rev up and sound strained, although it has no effect unless you have downshifted to such a low gear, for instance, gear one and the bike is spinning up into the redline, but there is no harm involved. Engine braking reduces your motorcycle speed without necessarily applying the brakes. Because your Motorcycle is slowing down passively, it allows you to have complete control of your motorbike in that you will only apply the brakes at much slower speeds, that is, if you want to come to a complete halt. This means that there will be less wear on the brake pads and less heat, and thus they will not fade easily, implying that they will last longer.

DID YOU GUYS GET A CHOICE OF WHICH NASCAR XFINITY RACES YOU WANTED TO DO? IF SO, WHY DID YOU PICK THIS ONE?

“Yeah, we did. The process was kind of up in the air based on what JRM could do, as far as a fifth car, and what races they also had open for HendrickCars.com to support. We did have a choice and I wanted to do this one. I just feel like I’ve struggled here the last couple of years and I haven’t done a great job. So, I wanted some extra laps. I don’t know if it will help or not, but I wanted to give it an effort to do so and try to be better for Sunday.”

EARLY ON, THERE WERE SOME HEAT CONCERNS ABOUT THIS CAR AND SOME CHANGES WERE MADE. HAS ALL THAT BEEN CLEARED UP? AND ADJACENT TO THAT, WHAT’S THE HOTTEST YOU’VE BEEN IN A RACE CAR?

“Yeah, honestly we haven’t really had any really hot races yet. So, I think it’s kind of tough to say. It’s really been a pretty mild spring; mild start to the year. It was fairly warm at COTA. I’d say that was probably the hottest one we’ve had, so far. And really outside of that, it’s been pretty cool about everywhere we’ve been. I’m not really sure just yet until we get to the summer months. This weekend is fairly warm, but it’s not as hot as it has been down here on other trips.

We’ll see. I don’t know, man. I’ve been hot plenty of times in the car. Just the right circumstance and the right car configuration can certainly bake you.”

DID LAST WEEK’S WIN CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE ABOUT GOING FORWARD THIS SEASON AND WHAT YOU GUYS CAN ACCOMPLISH?

“Honestly, no. I feel like for us, like I said last weekend and the weeks leading up to last week, I feel like we’ve been solid at times and had a lot of pace. “Not a ton. Just logistics of getting over here and getting home. I think it’ll be interesting. He’s not much of a TV guy, so that should be fun for him. He didn’t have to do it, so somehow or another they talked him into doing it. Why that was, I don’t really know. But I think it will be entertaining. For him, it’s not something he does all the time. He wasn’t one of those guys that got done racing and wanted to go do TV. It will be a good vantage point for him and I look forward to seeing how he does.”

“I think it’s great. Those three guys deserve their opportunities in my eyes and I think they’ve done a great job. They’ve had a lot of success and have run really well over the course of the last couple of years. So yeah, I think it’s a great thing. When a guy or a girl is deserving of an opportunity and they’re able to achieve that and have one presented to them in a manner like all of our guys have, I think it says a lot about them. I think HMS is in a really solid place right now. I feel like we all work pretty well together. It’s just kind of an easy flow in operation, which is good. I think it’s a great thing. I’m happy for William (Byron) and, in light of his news this week, I think he’s very deserving. I look forward to racing with him and working with him over the next few years too.”

YOU’VE MENTIONED YOU HAVEN’T DONE WELL AT DARLINGTON LATELY, BUT IN 2014 WHEN YOU FIRST SHOWED UP IN THE NASCAR XFINITY SERIES, IT WAS AN INCREDIBLE FINISH. HAVE YOU LOOKED BACK ON THE TAPE FROM THAT AND KIND OF GET INTO YOUR HEAD OF WHAT YOU DID AND HOW YOU MADE ALL THOSE PASSES HAPPEN?

“Yeah, it seems like I’ve just gotten worse here over time. So, I guess ignorance was bliss. But as it pertains to that night in particular, the win was great, don’t get me wrong. But I was really more proud of how we ran. I felt like we were one of the best couple of cars that night. I thought us and Kyle Busch were really good that night. (Kyle) Larson was also good that night. But I thought we were right there amongst the best and I thought that was something to be really proud of as a group and as we were getting started.

As far as how the end of the race went, the seas kind of parted for me. Just the way it kind of worked out. I had the outside lane and the opportunities were just kind of laid there in front of me for me to pickup as I came along. But that was probably more of good fortune and being in the right place at the right time on a fresh set of tires in all reality. Beyond that, we were solid all night and that kept us in a position to have a shot at it. I think that’s something to be more proud of than having things just go your way in the right time. It was a great night and hopefully we can get back in that direction.

I feel like we’ve been really sporadic here for whatever reason. I feel like we had a really good run here in one of the races in 2020, and then struggled really bad in the race in 2021. I don’t know if we raced here once or twice last year; but if there were two, neither one of them stuck out so they must not have been very good in my eyes. So, hopefully this week is better.”

HAVE YOU HAD A CHANCE TO TALK TO JIMMY MEANS ABOUT THE THROWBACK PAINT SCHEME?

“No, I haven’t. Not at all actually. Just in my talking with the folks at NAPA, they were excited about it. If they’re excited about it, then I’m excited about it. It’s a good looking car. I’m excited to represent their colors as always and hopefully we can give it a good run.”

IF YOU’RE NOT GIVING SOMEONE THE FINGER ON THE TRACK, THEN YOU DON’T REMEMBER (LAUGHS).

“Well, yeah I guess (laughs). That was in 2020, wasn’t it? Yeah, that one stood out, for sure. Not the ones last year. But I thought we were really good that night. That was part of my frustration. I thought we had a real shot at winning that thing.”

AFTER HAVING THE CAR LIKE YOU HAD LAST WEEK, HAVE YOU EVER BEEN THE GUY TO BE LIKE ‘MAN, I WANT TO HAVE THAT CAR FOR THIS TRACK OR THAT TRACK’? IF YOU HAVE BEEN LIKE THAT, HOW DOES THAT CHANGE WITH THIS CAR BECAUSE I’M SURE IT’S JUST A ROTATION RIGHT NOW OF WHERE THEY’RE GOING.

“I used to be like that when I was racing late models and stuff. We only had a couple of cars, so we would find one you liked and ran good with. If you were fortunate enough to not tear it up for a period of time, you wanted to keep bringing it back and you kind of had a little bit of a connection with it.

Since I got into the NASCAR world, not so much. I feel like everything is so precise, as far as the builds go. And from where I sit, I told you guys before – aside from the sticker over there on the dash, I couldn’t tell you one from another, to be honest with you. I really have no idea, as far as what chassis number we’re on or which one we ran last week; which one we’re bringing this week or whatever. I don’t really have a tie to it now.

And two, with the setup stuff, I think it’s really more about if you go somewhere and you have success with a certain balance of a car. I think it’s maybe more about going back and looking through some of that stuff and trying to replicate it. But you can implement those types of things in any car that we have. I think they’re all so close now that the number on the frame doesn’t really matter to me.”

TRACKSIDE LIVE SHOW TO DELIVER STAR-STUDDED GUEST LINEUP FOR NASCAR ALL-STAR RACE WEEKEND

FORT WORTH, Texas (May 6, 2022) – It is only fitting that Trackside Live will showcase a litany of stars stretching from NASCAR to sports and entertainment during the NASCAR All-Star Race weekend set for May 20-22 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Trackside Live, an entertaining, interview-style show hosted by PRN on-air personalities, will be held all three days from its outdoor stage situated in the Texas Motor Speedway Fan Zone near Gate 3. The day-long shows will feature drivers from the NASCAR Cup Series, Xfinity Series and Camping World Truck Series; greats from the fields of country music, NFL, boxing and NHL; and some of the exciting performers who will be entertaining in the Fan Zone.

The three-hour Trackside Live show on Sunday, May 22, which begins at 1:30 p.m., has an extraordinary lineup of guests that opens with country music superstar Blake Shelton and NASCAR on FOX television analyst and former Cup Series star Clint Bowyer.

Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee and former Dallas Cowboys great Drew Pearson, WBC, IBF and WBA welterweight world champion Errol Spence Jr., and former Dallas Stars goaltending great Marty Turco also will visit Trackside Live that day along with NASCAR Cup Series drivers Brad Keselowski, William Byron, Christopher Bell, Daniel Suarez, Austin Dillon and Austin Cindric.

The show will close with a 4:15 p.m. visit from a National Medal of Honor recipient, U.S. Army Master Sgt. Matthew Williams. The Medal of Honor, established by President Lincoln in 1861, is our nation’s highest recognition of valor in combat.

Throughout the three days of shows, more than two dozen drivers from the NASCAR Cup Series, Xfinity Series and Camping World Truck Series will visit the Trackside Live stage.

CORVETTE RACING AT SPA: Tandy, No. 64 C8.R Qualify Third in Class

Steady progress for Milner, Tandy through two days in WEC’s second round

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium (May 6, 2022) – Nick Tandy qualified Corvette Racing’s No. 64 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R third on the GTE Pro grid Friday ahead of the Six Hours of Spa, the team’s second race in this year’s FIA World Endurance Championship.

Tandy set a time of 2:16.606 (116.383 mph) in the Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette. It put him three-tenths of a second off Gianmaria Bruni’s GTE Pro pole-winning time and has Corvette Racing in a strong position to challenge again for a victory Saturday in its first full season in the WEC.

This is the second straight appearance for the mid-engine C8.R at Spa, but the gap in qualifying shows how quickly the team has gotten back up to speed at a still-unfamiliar location. The Corvette Racing engineering team and crew spent much of Thursday and Friday running through a number mechanical and aero adjustments to get the C8.R into a good configuration for Saturday’s race.

This is Milner’s first career appearance at Spa while Tandy is a former winner at the circuit and has two previous WEC starts to his credit at the 4.35-mile, 19-turn circuit. Both drivers were satisfied with the feel and balance of the Corvette after Friday’s sessions with optimism present within the team heading into Saturday. They are looking to equal or improve on a runner-up finish from Sebring in the season opener.

The Six Hours of Spa for the FIA World Endurance Championship is scheduled for 7 a.m. ET/1 p.m. CET on Saturday, May 7 from the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. The race will air live on MotorTrend TV with live streaming coverage of the race on the MotorTrend On-Demand app. TV and streaming coverage will begin at 6:30 a.m. ET, as does Radio Le Mans’ live audio broadcast.

NICK TANDY, NO. 64 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – QUALIFIED THIRD IN GTE PRO: “Overall, I’m really pleased with the second day here – not just the qualifying but also the two free practice sessions. We obviously came here without the vast knowledge that our competitors have in their toolboxes. So we’ve been making steps every session. To be this close to pole position and the front row in qualifying is very pleasing. It seems a bit like a Sebring situation where we don’t have the outright, single-lap pace of the Porsche but a six-hour race isn’t won in qualifying. We’ve been working hard in practices to make the car good over the two-hour stints and not one lap. Hopefully that will pay off tomorrow.”

Saturday outlook: “The weather for tomorrow looks like it could be changeable. The best-laid plans may be thrown out, but we need to take each lap and each hour as it comes in order to react to the situations as they present themselves in the best way we can. As a team, Corvette Racing knows how to do that as well as anyone, so we’re confident we can put up a fight for the win.”

TOMMY MILNER, NO. 64 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “It was very good this morning. It was great for me with the laps from yesterday now coming in this morning. Not that I feel that I already have all the experience that I need here, but I felt very comfortable in the Corvette. I’m very happy with the pace overall. For me obviously this is a bit of an unknown. Every time you come somewhere new, you wonder if you are going to be on the pace but I’m quite happy with the progress so far.

“This morning it was all about getting the car a bit better and Kyle (Millay, chief engineer) has done an awesome job with the setup changes and the ideas overnight to help improve the car. By the end of the session, the car was the best it has been all weekend. We stayed on old tires the whole session when everybody else changed tires at some point. So in that respect we’re super happy.”

Christian Rose Charges Forward to Music City

NASHVILLE, Tenn: On the heels of a top-10 finish in last Friday afternoon’s General Tire 125, ARCA Menards Series East rookie Christian Rose treks on during his freshman campaign eyeing his third straight top-10 run in Saturday night’s Music City 200 at Nashville (Tenn.) Fairgrounds Speedway.

Rose aboard the No. 42 West Virginia Tourism Toyota Camry for Cook Racing Technologies experienced his toughest short track yet last weekend at the Monster Mile, but progress was made throughout the race including in the final sprint to the finish which gives Rose motivation as his learning curve continues.

“Dover was definitely a challenge but start to finish I feel like we went forward, especially at the end of the race,” said Rose who also captured a top-10 finish at Five Flags (Fla.) Speedway in March.

“Dover can certainly be intimidating because things can happen in a hurry but I feel like that as our No. 42 West Virginia Tourism Toyota Camry improved handling wise, especially late in the race – I wish I could have taken with what I had learned during those first 100 laps and I suspect our race result would look a lot different.”

Tackling Dover for the first time with a car intact and a top-10 finish would suffice as a victory for some, but Rose admitted that his Cook Racing Technologies team is hungry about winning.

“I know that I am learning behind the wheel and my team stands behind me 100 percent, but they have already visited Victory Lane as an organization this year and I know they want to do it again. I’d love to do for West Virginia Tourism and everyone who supports our team. This isn’t easy – especially in ARCA.

“The series is full of very good drivers who compete for some of the best race teams out there, but we are improving and we are heading in the right direction. Nashville is a place that I have prior experience at and I’m hoping that will pay dividends ahead of the race on Saturday night.”

In 2019, Rose competed in a CARS Pro Late Model Tour event at the historic half-mile short track.

“I feel like Nashville is pretty close to your typical short track,” Rose added. “Its confines are tight and the bottom groove is the preferred line, but it’s also a momentum track where if you can carry that speed through the corners and onto the straightaways, your chances of passing cars and making moves.

“It’s important to make sure we get our No. 42 West Virginia Tourism Toyota Camry dialed in and practice and then utilize the race to keep making gains to put us in contention. The track is going to change a lot throughout the night so it’s crucial that we keep up with those adjustments to keep our drive off strong that will hopefully put us in contention for a top-five finish on Saturday night”

No matter the outcome of his fourth career ARCA Menards Series East start this weekend, it’s already been an amazing week for the Martinsburg, West Virginia native.

On Tuesday, May 3rd – he was inducted into the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Wall of Fame for his Division 1 baseball achievements.

“Tuesday was very special,” sounded Rose. “I appreciate everyone at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore for giving me the honor and it brought back a lot of great memories. I’m ready to make new memories though on Saturday in one of the coolest cities in the United States.”

This season, Rose who competes in the ARCA Menards Series and the ARCA Menards Series East will continue to strengthen a relationship with the West Virginia Department of Tourism.

“We will get there though. Our Cook Racing Technologies team is too good not to have our luck turn around and post the finishes we know that we are capable of.”

Following Nashville, Rose and CRT plan to compete in the ARCA Menards Series event at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway on May 27th.

The Music City 200 (200 laps | 119.2 miles) is the fourth of seven races on the 2022 ARCA Menards Series East schedule. Practice begins on Saturday, May 7th at 1:30 p.m. for an hour and fifteen-minute session.
