Ed Carpenter to compete in all IndyCar oval events in 2022

The number 3 is the number of the day for racing veteran and team owner Ed Carpenter, who will be piloting the No. 33 Ed Carpenter Racing Dallara-Chevrolet in all oval events in this year’s NTT IndyCar Series season.

Carpenter, a Butler University graduate who was born in Paris, Illinois, but grew up in Indianapolis, will be making his first IndyCar oval start of the season at Texas Motor Speedway on March 20. He will then return to Indianapolis Motor Speedway to qualify for the 106th running of the Indianapolis 500 scheduled for May 29, which will mark his 19th consecutive appearance in motorsports’ greatest spectacle event, before participating in an Iowa Speedway doubleheader feature on July 23 and 24. He will then cap off his racing tenure at Gateway’s World Wide Technology Group on August 20.

The team took to social media to reveal Carpenter’s racing plans on March 3 (3/3) at 3:33 p.m. (E.T.) with the date marking Carpenter’s birthday as he turned 40 years of age.

The 2022 season will mark Carpenter’s 20th consecutive season in IndyCar competition. Since making his debut at Chicagoland Speedway in September 2003 through his latest start at World Wide Technology Raceway in August 2021, Carpenter has notched three career victories, four poles, nine podiums and an average-finishing result of 14.3 in 191 career starts. His first IndyCar victory occurred at Kentucky Speedway in October 2011 followed by Auto Club Speedway in September 2012 and at Texas Motor Speedway in June 2014. Three of his four career poles occurred at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Indianapolis 500, with his latest occurring in May 2018 as he went on to finish in second place. His best result in an IndyCar standings is 12th place in 2009.

Following a full-time IndyCar season in 2013, Carpenter scaled back to compete only on the oval venues from 2014 through the present. This season will mark Carpenter’s first sporting a new number after spending the previous 10 seasons piloting the No. 20 entry.

Carpenter’s team, Ed Carpenter Racing, currently fields two full-time entries. Conor Daly, who is coming off a 21st-place run at the Streets of St. Petersburg to commence the 2022 IndyCar season, is driving the No. 20 Chevrolet while Rinus VeeKay, who finished sixth at the Streets of St. Petersburg, pilots the No. 21 Chevrolet.

Carpenter is set to make his first NTT IndyCar Series start of the season at Texas Motor Speedway on March 20 with the event scheduled for coverage at 12:30 p.m. ET on NBC.

RACE #3 – LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY
Coming off a NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) victory for Chevrolet at Auto Club Speedway, NASCAR makes its second of three stops on the series’ west coast swing this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Situated just northeast of the famed Las Vegas Strip, the 1.5-mile Nevada oval will be the host of a tripleheader race weekend, featuring all three of NASCAR’s national touring series.

The three-day race weekend kicks-off with the return of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) under the lights on Friday, March 4, with the Victoria’s Voice Foundation 200, the series only appearance at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this season. The 134-lap event marks the second race for the new Silverado RST, which made its competition debut in the series at Daytona International Speedway.

Saturday brings the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS), where the Camaro SS drivers and teams will take on the Alsco Uniforms 300. Chevrolet swept the two NXS races at Las Vegas Speedway in 2021. A.J. Allmendinger raced his way to victory lane for Kaulig Racing in the March 2021 race at the venue, his first of five NXS wins on the season. The fall 2021 Las Vegas race saw Josh Berry capture his second-career NXS win when filling the seat of the No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet after Michael Annett was sidelined due to an injury.

The weekend is capped off with the NASCAR Cup Series Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube on Sunday, March 6. In 28 NCS races held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the bowtie brand has made its way to Victory Lane nine times, including Kyle Larson’s monumental win in the March 2021 race. In just his fourth start with Hendrick Motorsports, Larson led 103 laps in his No. 5 Chevrolet en route to his first victory for the team to start a career season for the 29-year-old driver and his quest for the Championship title.

FIRST WIN AND A STRONG SHOWING FOR THE NEXT GEN CAMARO ZL1
In just the second points-paying race of the season, reigning NASCAR Cup Series Champion Kyle Larson drove his way to a hard fought victory at Auto Club Speedway to give the Next Gen Camaro ZL1 its first victory since its debut into the NASCAR Cup Series. The 29-year-old had to forfeit his starting spot and move to the rear of the field after discovering an ignition issue that resulted in unapproved adjustments. Larson drove through the field, holding the lead for 27 of the final 34 laps to capture his second-career win at Auto Club Speedway and his 17th all-time victory in NASCAR’s premier series.

It was a strong showing for Chevrolet in the 200-lap event. The Camaro ZL1 crossed the finish line in an impressive 1-2-3-4 finish, as well as capturing six of the top-10 in the final running order. Six different Chevrolet teams were represented in the top-10: Kyle Larson (Race Winner; Hendrick Motorsports); Austin Dillon (2nd; Richard Childress Racing); Erik Jones (3rd; Petty GMS Motorsports); Daniel Suarez (4th; Trackhouse Racing); Daniel Hemric (9th; Kaulig Racing); and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (10th; JTG Daugherty Racing).

“We are proud of the competitive performance of the Next Gen Camaro ZL1 at Auto Club Speedway and the car’s debut on an intermediate-style track,” said Dr. Eric Warren, Chevrolet Director of NASCAR Programs. “Six different Chevrolet teams were represented in the top-10 in Fontana, which is a testament to the collaboration between the GM NASCAR Competition Engineering Team and all of our Chevrolet race teams in developing the Camaro ZL1. We are excited about the early on-track performance of the car and look forward to seeing continued success for our Chevrolet drivers and teams in 2022.”

Also having a stand-out day was Team Chevy’s Tyler Reddick, who swept both stage wins in his No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet and led 90 laps – more than the total laps led in his 75 Cup starts combined. Damage sustained from a flat tire while leading took him out of contention.

BOWTIE BULLETS

· With its 40 NASCAR Cup Series Manufacturer Championships; 33 NASCAR Cup Series Driver Championships; and 815 all-time NASCAR Cup Series wins, Chevrolet holds the title of winningest brand in NASCAR.

· In addition to its nine wins at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Cup Series, Chevrolet has recorded 56 top-five’s, 110 top-10’s, and has led 2,945 laps.

· Erik Jones is the youngest pole winner at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (22 years, 3 months, 17 days).
· Career Chevrolet driver Jimmie Johnson leads the NASCAR Cup Series in all-time wins at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with four (2005, 2006, 2007, 2010).

· With a victory, Kyle Larson could potentially become just the sixth reigning NASCAR Cup Series Champion to win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the following season, joining Matt Kenseth (2004), Jimmie Johnson (2007, 2010), Tony Stewart (2012), Kevin Harvick (2015) and Joey Logano (2019).

· Tyler Reddick has led 90 laps in 2022 to lead all NASCAR Cup Series drivers thus far this season.

QUOTABLE QUOTES
AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 BREZTRI CAMARO ZL1
ARE THE BUMPS AND CHALLENGES AT LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY SIMILAR TO THE BUMPS IN TURNS 3 AND 4 AT AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY?
“Turns one and two at Las Vegas Motor Speedway are high speed corners and the bumps have always been something that you work on your car to get through to make speed. The faster your car can go through there without having to unload and get the feel back in the front tires has always been an issue. The person that can skip through them the best usually runs really well. At Las Vegas Motor Speedway it’s an entry issue, unlike last week at Auto Club Speedway where it was an exit issue. At Auto Club Speedway, you’re leaving the corner with wheel in the car. I think the bumps at Las Vegas will be challenging this weekend, just as they always are. Although truthfully, from the simulator work I’ve done to prepare for the race, the bumps were not as upsetting as they were at Auto Club Speedway. The Auto Club Speedway bumps were pretty accurate to our sim. We were busting loose across those bumps. So, I’m hoping that it’s accurate again, as far as the bumps in Las Vegas not being as much of a problem as they were in Fontana.”

YOU AND TYLER REDDICK BOTH RAN WELL AT THE CLASH AND AT AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY. EXPLAIN WHAT IS BEHIND RCR’S RECENT RESURGENCE.
“I think Chevrolet, in general, is in a pretty good position. At RCR and ECR, we’ve put a big focus on the Next Gen car. We definitely tried to be the guys to embrace this new car the earliest in the process. I think some of the teams probably didn’t embrace it as much as we did. We saw it coming and tried to put a lot of effort into it from the beginning. I really love working with Tyler Reddick. He’s a great teammate and I think we both do each other some good. We have different thought processes on things, and I think that allows us to open our minds and push each other in different ways. I was bummed for him last week. I felt like that was his first win coming, for sure. And then all of a sudden, we popped up there and had a great shot at winning it.”

WHEREVER IT MIGHT BE, IT COULD BE IN A MARKET, IT COULD BE A TRIP; BUT DOES AUSTIN DILLON HAVE A GO-TO PLACE? WHAT IS IT AND WHY?
“When we’re out on the west coast, we like to stay out there for the entire west coast swing. Last year, my wife Whitney and I took my son Ace, and we took our motorhome to a road course that Ron Fellows runs for Chevrolet. We spent a day at road course school out there. Then, we went to Phoenix Raceway early because I love the Phoenix area. Goodyear, Arizona is a cool area. We stay at the Wigwam and it’s nice and relaxing. It has a couple golf courses that we hit up. I like traveling the west coast swing at the beginning of the year because it gets the year going. When we come home, we don’t do a lot of traveling after that. We don’t do many road trips, but the west coast is the one that I stay out since we’re out there for several weekends in a row.”

KYLE LARSON, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM CAMARO ZL1
LARSON ON LAST YEAR’S LAS VEGAS WIN:
“That win was really special for us. It was our first win as a team and meant a lot to a lot of people on this team – some visiting victory lane in the Cup Series for the first time. But I also know how much it meant to Rick and Linda (Hendrick) because the paint scheme was similar to what (their late son) Ricky (Hendrick) ran. It’s an honor to drive for them and to drive this car with this scheme that means so much to so many.”

LARSON ON LAST SUNDAY’S WIN AT AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY:
“It’s always fun to win in your home state. I learned a lot on the track with this new Camaro ZL1 and I’m sure (crew chief) Cliff (Daniels) and the team did as well. But it’s a new car and we’re going to be constantly learning each and every race – and it will be no different this weekend at Vegas. Every lap we turn, we learn.”

CLIFF DANIELS, CREW CHIEF, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM CAMARO ZL1
DANIELS ON IF LAST YEAR’S SUCCESS AT LAS VEGAS CAN TRANSLATE TO THIS WEEKEND:
“It’s a completely different car and tire, and the way the race plays out will probably be different. Las Vegas is real bumpy and it has a lot of character. The way you approach its uniqueness and the bumps – you have to have good ride in your car and the driver can’t get too upset by the bumps. The comfort and control and stability are things the entire field will be searching for, and we missed some of those qualities a little bit last weekend in California but still ended up with a great result.”

COREY LAJOIE, NO. 7 SCHLUTER SYSTEMS CAMARO ZL1
“Our Spire team is hard at work, turning around the Fontana car and heading to Vegas with it. We learned a bunch on Sunday, which we can hopefully apply for a solid run in our Chevy Camaro this week. The bumps over the tunnel are tricky, so it’ll be a test of who can get over those the best. Statistically Vegas is one of my best racetracks, so I always have confidence rolling in that we have the opportunity for a good run. I’m excited to have Schluter Systems back on board for their first race of the 2022 season, and the 6th year of our partnership.”

TYLER REDDICK, NO. 8 BETMGM CAMARO ZL1
LOOKING BACK ON LAST WEEK’S RACE AT AUTO CLUB, TWO STAGE WINS AND A VICTORY IN SIGHT; AND UNFORTUNATELY, BAD LUCK WON AGAIN. HOW DO YOU GET YOUR MINDSET BACK ON TRACK FOR THIS WEEKEND?
“Well, I think you have to look at the positives of the race at Auto Club. Sure, I’m completely gutted that we didn’t get the win when it felt like we had the best car out there but there were also a lot of other small victories to come from that day. Winning two stages and leading the most laps of my Cup Series career just goes to show that our time is coming. We learned so much over the weekend from practice to qualifying to the race and those are all things that we will take with us and learn from to become stronger from it. This car has been a learning experience for all of us drivers and I think the handle that I do have on it right now is only going to get better and more consistent as the season goes on. I’m looking forward to seeing what my team and I can do this weekend at Las Vegas.”

YOU’VE HAD SUCCESS AT LAS VEGAS IN THE XFINITY SERIES AND TRUCK SERIES. BUT WITH THIS NEW CAR AND HAVING RACED AT AUTO CLUB LAST WEEKEND, WHAT DO YOU ANTICIPATE THE RACING BEING LIKE THIS WEEKEND?
“I expect the racing to look a lot like Fontana. It’s the same type of situation, you’re going to see cars being able to run all three lanes fairly early on and be able to make lanes work with their cars. You’re going to have to be able to run all three lanes in a lot of different points in the run. Early run, middle of the run, end of the run. Las Vegas has a lot of grooves, in the sense of you can run the very bottom of the racetrack in Turn 1, 2, 3 and 4 and paint the line, kind of like you would at the old Atlanta. You have a lot of options lane-wise at this racetrack and I think you’re going to see a lot of drivers forced to make those work to be able to get around their competition, to make passes, to maintain, whatever it might be. I expect a very similar race to Fontana last weekend. It will be very interesting to see how the rubber lays down, how lanes will come and go. You’ll have to keep up with this racetrack as it lays rubber, this one lays a lot of rubber. Fontana was a lot of fun and Las Vegas is going to be a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to it.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CAMARO ZL1
ELLIOTT ON RACING AT LAS VEGAS:
“Last week was our first real test with these new cars and I think it definitely made for some exciting racing for the fans. Having Fontana under our belts will put us in a better position this weekend at Vegas, knowing a little bit more about how these cars race on intermediate tracks and what adjustments we can make.”

ELLIOTT ON THE WEST COAST SWING:
“The West Coast swing, I’ve always found it kind of challenging. You start with Daytona, and I feel like that week has its own vibe. Then you go west and you kind of feel like things really get rolling and get started and that’s where you really kind of figure out, ‘OK, hey, this is where we are, this is where we stack up, this is where we need to go to work in certain areas.’ And then I feel like everybody comes home and gets an opportunity to get caught up.”

ALAN GUSTAFSON, CREW CHIEF, NO. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS CAMARO ZL1
GUSTAFSON ON HEADING TO THE SECOND INTERMEDIATE TRACK OF THE SEASON:
“There’s a lot we can take from Fontana. The cars aren’t going to change much and there’s not a whole lot we can do to them. Fundamentally, what we’re trying to do is good. As long as we get the car balanced and driving reasonable for Chase then I think we’ll have a shot. In Fontana, nobody knew what to expect with it being our first time on an intermediate track. So I’m interested in going to Vegas, and I think if we get the car driving good and execute, we’ll have a shot.”

DANIEL HEMRIC, NO. 16 SOUTH POINT CAMARO ZL1
“Going out to Vegas is exciting to me for many reasons. Through my involvement with the Gaughan family and South Point Hotel & Casino, it’s like going to see my second family. I’m super excited to be able to continue that relationship now through Kaulig Racing in both the Xfinity and Cup races this weekend. I’m looking forward to another solid, doubleheader weekend with Kaulig Racing.”

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 AXALTA CAMARO ZL1
BYRON ON HOW THE NEXT GEN CAR WILL RACE AT LAS VEGAS:
“Just based on off-season testing and the characteristics of Vegas, I think racing is going to be pretty similar to Charlotte (Motor Speedway). It’s going to be fast, and Vegas typically has a lot of grip in the springtime. The fall race is a little bit of a different story since it’s a little bit hotter that time of year. The spring race is a little more straightforward in that you can tell pretty early on who has the fast cars, and I think that will be the case again. That was us for sure this time last year, and I think we’ll have another good shot to win this race. Hopefully we get it done this time.”

BYRON ON WHAT MAKES LAS VEGAS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER MILE-AND-A-HALF TRACKS:
“It’s got a lot of character but it’s fast and really smooth. I feel like Vegas and Phoenix, as weird as that sounds, have similar asphalt. They’re very smooth surfaces but have character as well. With it being so smooth you really have to run all over and utilize every lane to be good. The track changes a lot with rubber buildup, too, so you have to keep up with that so you don’t get behind early on in the race.”

RUDY FUGLE, CREW CHIEF, NO. 24 AXALTA CAMARO ZL1
FUGLE ON MAINTAINING CONFIDENCE DESPITE MISFORTUNE EARLY IN THE SEASON:
“Obviously this isn’t the start to the year that we envisioned, but no one on the No. 24 team is getting down about it. It’s only been two races and even then, both races we were running up front and in contention for the win. We have a strong team, from the work they put in, the speed we show and how we execute during the weekend. The results don’t reflect that accurately. We had a hot rod in Fontana, and we’ll have another one in Vegas. We’re not going to dwell on the past. We’re already focused on Vegas and ready for our next challenge.”

FUGLE ON WHAT IT TAKES TO RUN WELL AT LAS VEGAS:
“Vegas in the spring has much cooler temperatures than when we race there in the fall. The spring race seems to focus more on overall speed and setting yourself up with track position. Vegas is a track where you walk a fine line with your setups, and in Fontana we really found out just how fine that line is with the Next Gen car. I feel like we showed a lot of speed in Fontana, so if we keep up with track changes, we should be up front again this weekend.”

JUSTIN HALEY, NO. 31 LEAFFILTER GUTTER PROTECTION CAMARO ZL1
“I’m looking forward to going to Las Vegas this weekend. It’s always been one of our better mile-and-a-half tracks at Kaulig Racing in the Xfinity Series, but obviously this weekend will be more of a challenge in the NextGen car. Hopefully we will show some good speed, gather points, minimize mistakes this week, and get a good finish in our No. 31 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Camaro ZL1.”

RICKY STENHOUSE JR., NO. 47 SUNNYD CAMARO ZL1
“Last Sunday at Fontana (Auto Club Speedway), it was a great effort by everyone to finish in the top-10. We kept our car clean and kept it rolling to learn a lot about it. It was really fast out there when it was by itself. It got tight when I was behind other cars, but we will keep working on that at Las Vegas. We will also have SUNNYD on our car this weekend. They’ve been a longstanding partner during my racing career, and I’ve developed some great friendships along the way. We’re proud to have them back at JTG Daugherty Racing for the race weekend.”

ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1
BOWMAN ON HEADING TO LAS VEGAS:
“I’m looking forward to going to Las Vegas. We had a good car at Auto Club last week, just an unfortunate situation at the end of the race. Our team works so hard to put together fast race cars, and I know they are going to do it again this weekend. Greg and I will talk about our strategy and be ready for the green flag this Sunday.”

GREG IVES, CREW CHIEF, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1
IVES ON HIS APPROACH TO SUNDAY’S RACE AT LAS VEGAS:
“I feel like Las Vegas is another place where you don’t have to be isolated to one lane. You can run top, bottom and middle. As long as your car has the ability to move around, you can make passes. We have run well in the past at Las Vegas and come close to getting some wins there, and I feel like we have the speed to do it. We just have to go out there and execute and make sure we are there at the end when the checkered flag falls.”

DANIEL SUAREZ, NO. 99 COMMSCOPE CAMARO ZL1
THOUGHTS FROM SUNDAY?
“In some ways I am really disappointed because I could see how close we are to winning and I thought we might have had it Sunday. Then I also realize how good our Chevrolets are, how good my team is and how fast my pit crew is this season.”

HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO WINNING?
“We’re going to win a few races very soon here. My pit crew, those guys are legends; it’s unbelievable. It’s the best pit crew I’ve ever had, and it’s a lot of fun to race like that. I can tell you that I’m going to work very, very hard to go to Victory Lane very, very soon.”

WHAT HAS COMMSCOPE MEANT TO YOU?
“They are one of the reasons why I am here. CommScope has been with me for so long. Race fans sometimes don’t realize how important companies like CommScope are to our sport. I hope we can give them a trip to victory lane soon.”

HAMPTON, Ga. (March 3, 2022) – Multi-Platinum selling Country superstar Brantley Gilbert has been named the grand marshal for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday, March 20.

The Georgia native and hit singer/songwriter will give the command to start engines ahead of the 500 mile race as part of his grand marshal duties.

About the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 weekend:

Since 2015 the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 has been the main event in Atlanta Motor Speedway’s spring NASCAR weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. This storied race brings awareness to Folds of Honor and its mission to help families of military servicemen and women who have fallen or been disabled while on active duty in the United States Armed Forces.

On Sunday, March 20, 2022, this 500-mile race will be the first for the NASCAR Cup Series on Atlanta Motor Speedway’s revamped racing surface, with NASCAR’s best taking to the reconfigured 28-degree banked corners for the first time.

The race weekend also features Atlanta’s same-day NASCAR doubleheader on Saturday, March 19, 2022. The thrills of the Fr8 208 Camping World Truck Series race and the Nalley Cars 250 Xfinity Series race all happen in one action-packed day that race fans look forward to every year.

Formula One terminates contract with Russia

Formula One announced that the sport has terminated its contract with Russia with no intentions of holding any Grand Prix events in the near future.

The announcement comes a week after Russia commenced an ongoing, large-scale military invasion of Ukraine. It also comes after Formula One initially cancelled plans to hold a Russian Grand Prix for the 2022 season, which was scheduled to occur at Sochi Autodrom on September 25.

“Formula One can confirm it has terminated its contract with the Russian Grand Prix promoter,” Formula One said in a released statement. “[The decision] meaning Russia will not have a race in the future.”

The Russian Grand Prix made its debut in 1913 at Saint Petersburg followed by 1914 before being canceled due to World War I and the Russian Civil War. A century later, the country returned to hosting Grand Prix events in 2014 at Sochi Autodrome, an annual event that lasted through 2021. Russia, which had a contract to host Formula One events through 2025, was initially set to relocate its annual Grand Prix event from Sochi Autodrome to Igora Drive in St. Petersburg in 2023.

The decision to cancel the Russian Grand Prix will not prevent Nikita Mazepin, the lone Russian F1 competitor currently competing for Haas F1 Team, from competing this upcoming season in spite of a request from the International Olympic Committee to have all Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing in international sporting events. In a released statement from the FIA earlier this week, all Russian and Belarusian competitors and officials will be allowed to compete in international competitions in their neutral capacity under the FIA flags. Mazepin will be barred, however, from competing in this year’s British Grand Prix scheduled for July 3 following a ban request from Motorsport UK. An announcement for Mazepin’s replacement from Haas has not currently been made.

During the final day of a pre-season test session last week at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, the Haas F1 Team removed its title sponsor Uralkali from their entries. Uralkali is a fertiliser company that is part-owned by Dmitry Mazepin, Nikita’s father.

Any decisions for Formula One to modify the 2022 schedule or replace the Russian Grand Prix with another country have not currently been made.

Verstappen inks long-term contract extension with Red Bull Racing

The reigning Formula One world champion Max Verstappen has signed a new long-term contract extension to remain with the Oracle Red Bull Racing team through the 2028 F1 season, a deal that will commence following his initial contract that spans through 2023.

The 24-year-old Verstappen, who competes under the Dutch flag, is coming off his finest season to date, where he claimed 10 Grand Prix victories and won his maiden Formula One World Championship following a year-long battle and final lap duel with seven-time champion Sir Lewis Hamilton in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit in December. In doing so, he became the first Dutchman to win a Formula One title and he delivered the fifth drivers’ championship for Red Bull Racing, a team that has competed in F1 since 2005.

“I really enjoy being part of the Oracle Red Bull Racing Team, so choosing to stay to the 2028 season was an easy decision,” Verstappen said. “I love this Team and last year was simply incredible, our goal since we came together in 2016 was to win the championship and we have done that, so now it’s about keeping the number one on the car long-term.”

Verstappen, who made his Formula One debut with Scuderia Toro Rosso at age 17 in 2015, claimed his maiden Grand Prix victory in his first start with Red Bull Racing at the Spanish Grand Prix in May 2016. In doing so, he became the youngest F1 Grand Prix winner at the age of 18 years and 228 days old. From 2016 through 2020, the Dutchman notched 10 Grand Prix victories, three poles, 42 podiums and two third-place results in the final driver’s standings (2019 and 2020).

Entering the 2022 season, Verstappen has recorded 20 victories, 13 poles, 60 poles and an average-finishing result of 7.0 in 141 career starts in Formula One. In addition, Red Bull Racing, which enters their first season with the newly formed Red Bull Powertrains division after taking over Honda’s engine programme and with Oracle as a title sponsor, have 75 career victories along with 73 poles and 206 podiums as they look to capture their sixth drivers’ championship and first constructors’ title since winning four in a row (2010-2013).

In capturing his maiden F1 world championship in 2021 along with a career-high 10 victories, Verstappen will sport the number 1 instead of 33 on his Red Bull RB18 car as he looks to defend his title.

“To have Max signed with Oracle Red Bull Racing through to the end of 2028 is a real statement of intent,” Christian Horner, CEO/Team Principal of Red Bull Racing, said. “Our immediate focus is on retaining Max’s World Championship title, but this deal also shows he is a part of the Team’s long-term planning. With the Red Bull Powertrains division working towards the new engine regulations for 2026 we wanted to make sure we had the best driver on the grid secured for that car.”

Verstappen will continue to compete alongside teammate Sergio “Checo” Perez, who enters his 12th full-time season as an F1 competitor with his second as a Red Bull Racing competitor. Perez, a 32-year-old veteran who competes under the Mexican flag, is also coming off a productive season, where he won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in June, notched a total of five podiums and finished in fourth place in the 2021 drivers’ standings.

Verstappen’s quest to defend his F1 world championship commences on March 20 at Bahrain International Circuit for the 2022 season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.

Bobby Labonte & Cook Out Return to Short Track Racing for 2022 Southern Modified Auto Racing Teams Tour

The No. 25 Cook Out Tour Modified Paint Scheme

NASCAR Legend to Compete in No. 25 Cook Out Tour Modified

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – (March 3, 2022) – After his inaugural modified season competing in the Southern Modified Auto Racing Teams Tour (S.M.A.R.T.), Bobby Labonte is set to return in 2022, once again piloting the No. 25 Cook Out Tour Modified. The first race of the season is set for March 5 at Florence Motor Speedway in Timmonsville, S.C.

The legendary NASCAR champion first ventured into modified racing at North Carolina’s famed Bowman Gray Stadium shortly before his 2020 induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Labonte saw a lot of success in the S.M.A.R.T. tour in 2021, coming away with wins at Carteret Speedway and Dillon Motor Speedway, five top five finishes and eight top 10 finishes.

“Everyone with Team 25 is top notch and put together a really fast Cook Out modified race car for me last year,” said Labonte. “We enjoyed the success of racing up front and celebrated winning twice with Cook Out hamburgers and milkshakes for the entire team! We’re looking forward to going after more wins and racing toward a championship in the No. 25 Cook Out Tour Modified.”

The 2022 S.M.A.R.T. season schedule is comprised of 12 races at some of the newest, and some of the most historic, venues in American motorsports:

· March 5: Florence Motor Speedway
· March 19: Southern National Motorsports Park
· March 26: Caraway Speedway
· April 2: South Boston Speedway
· April 10: Franklin Co. Speedway
· June 29: Caraway Speedway
· September 3: Carteret County Speedway
· September 10: Orange County Fair Speedway
· September 17: Dominion Raceway
· October 1: Motor Mile Speedway
· October 8: Hickory Motor Speedway
· October 15: Tri-County Speedway

“Bobby Labonte has a passion to race. Since joining the S.M.A.R.T. Modified tour, not only has he won twice, but he also has made a huge impact on local tracks and the grassroots fans,” said S.M.A.R.T. Modified Tour Director Chris Williams. “The Hall of Famer joined every autograph session and ride-along, then displayed pure talent on the track. To have Bobby on our tour cements fan participation, social networking and attendance. We are blessed he’s racing with us and we wouldn’t have had a fast track to success without him in our series.”

Labonte and Cook Out established their partnership in 2021, but Cook Out cemented its spot in racing in 2020 when the fast-food hamburger chain became the title sponsor of the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

“My Dad, Morris (Reaves, Founder of Cook Out), and I are really proud of how Bobby and the team raced last year,” said Jeremy Reaves, owner of Cook Out. “Even more, we continue to enjoy his down-to-earth style and friendship. Cook Out is honored to again sponsor Bobby in the S.M.A.R.T. Modified Tour and we certainly wish him nothing but the best again this season.”

Team 25’s additional partners include Coca Cola, Robert Yates Racing Engines, Pro-System Brakes, Nitro Manufacturing, Earnest Performance, zMAX Micro-lubricant, Racing Electronics, Bobby Taylor Oil Company, New 64 Tire and Auto, Boa Coolers, and Breaking Limits. Brand-new merchandise is now available at shopbobbylabonte.com.

About Southern Modified Auto Racing Teams Tour
In the fall of 1988, after a rained-out event in Myrtle Beach, S.C., a group of dedicated car owners and drivers banded together to form a club that would strive to return Modifieds to their previous state of popularity in the South. As a result of that meeting, the SOUTHERN MODIFIED AUTO RACING TEAMS (S.M.A.R.T.) was born.

Since its inception, S.M.A.R.T. has had the opportunity to provide race fans throughout the southeast with spectacular displays of raw power, fast-paced action and speed unrivaled by most asphalt racing today. Through hard work and dedication the efforts of S.M.A.R.T. have paid off.

INDYCAR Moves New Hybrid Powertrain Debut to 2024

2022 - St Petersburg GP

INDIANAPOLIS (Thursday, March 3, 2022) – Due to ongoing global supply chain challenges with some hybrid system components, INDYCAR announced it has adjusted the debut of the 2.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with hybrid technology to the 2024 season.

In consultation with engine partners Chevrolet and Honda, the NTT INDYCAR SERIES will continue to use the current 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 powerplant for the 2023 season.

“We are pleased with the pace of the technical development of the 2.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 hybrid as we prepare it for competition,” said INDYCAR President Jay Frye. “We are very encouraged by the progress our team and our partners have made, but an immediate decision needed to be made to ensure we are prepared for the 2023 season utilizing our current 2.2-liter engine package.

“Thanks to our great partners at Honda and Chevrolet for working through this challenging supply chain situation. We are going full speed ahead with the 2.4-liter hybrid engine and cannot wait to have it on track in 2024.”

The development of the 2.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with hybrid technology involves cutting-edge innovations unique to INDYCAR. The new engine will give the most exciting and competitive racing series in the world a roaring and powerful 800 horsepower as a baseline. The addition of the hybrid system will give an additional boost of 100 horsepower to ultimately produce 900.

“We are proud of the hard work and level of commitment by our engine group, along with our teams and partners, in the development of the Chevrolet 2.4-liter engine for our INDYCAR program,” said Mark Stielow, director, GM Motorsports Competition Engineering. “We were certainly excited to have it on track next season. Chevrolet remains fully committed to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, and we look forward to debuting our future engine package in 2024.”

“We are very excited to get the electrified era of INDYCAR SERIES racing underway,” said David Salters, president and technical director, Honda Performance Development. “We have finished development and dyno testing of our new internal combustion engine, and once the hybrid system component supply chain issues are sorted, we’ll begin track testing of the new hybrid power unit.”

The first on-track test of the new INDYCAR SERIES 2.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 will come Wednesday, March 30 and Thursday, March 31 at Sebring International Raceway. Development, testing and work to incorporate the hybrid component will continue throughout the year.

The 2022 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season continues Sunday, March 20 for the XPEL 375 at Texas Motor Speedway. Coverage begins at 12:30 p.m. (ET) on NBC and simulstreamed on Peacock Premium. Coverage is also available from the INDYCAR Radio Network with audio available via the INDYCAR App powered by NTT DATA.

Burton, Motorcraft/Quick Lane Team Looking To Rebound at Vegas

After being taken out in crashes in the first two points-paying Cup Series races of 2022, Harrison Burton and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team are hoping to get back on track this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Burton, while disappointed to not have finished the races at Daytona and Fontana, is also focusing on the positive aspects of the team’s performance in those events.

“I’d say the season has been encouraging and frustrating at the same time,” he said. “We have had decent runs and some unfortunate situations in both, but I’m proud of our group for how we are rebounding from those situations.

“It is certainly important to get some finishes, starting with this weekend.”

Las Vegas is a place that in recent seasons has been good for Burton, crew chief Brian Wilson and the Wood Brothers. Burton has top-10 finishes in all four of his Xfinity starts at Las Vegas, and the Wood Brothers have two runner-up finishes and an average finish of eighth in their past four Vegas races. Wilson has a win, a pole and five top-fives in Xfinity Series races at Las Vegas.

Still, Burton and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team, like all others in the garage, are working to maximize the performance of the Next Gen car.

“I think the Vegas race is going to certainly be a challenge,” Burton said. “The bumps in the corners are going to challenge both the cars and drivers, so whichever team figures them out first should be in good shape.”

Practice for the Pennzoil 400 is set for Saturday at 10:30 a.m. (1:30 p.m. Eastern), followed by qualifying at 11:05 a.m. (2:05 p.m. Eastern).

Sunday’s 400-mile race, with Stage breaks at Laps 80 and 165, is set to start at 12:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m.) with TV coverage on FOX.

ROA GETS 9TH PLACE FINISH IN WING RACE – WORLD OF OUTLAWS NEXT

Brody Roa racing with a wing last Saturday at Keller Auto Speedway. Photo courtesy of Paul Trevino.

(Cypress, CA, March 2, 2022) For only the second time in his 12-year sprint car racing career, Brody Roa raced a winged car last Saturday night and came home ninth in the Kings of Thunder main event at the Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, California. Next up for the veteran driver is two wing races with the legendary World of Outlaws at the end of March.

Saturday’s race came on the same Keller Auto Speedway where Roa made his winged debut a year ago. However, this race was vastly different from that first effort.

“I am calling last week’s race our first real attempt with a wing,” the Garden Grove, California driver explained. “The first time we took the wing out it was kind of one of those ‘we are going anyway situations.’ All of my focus was on Jason’s car (Jason May’s 360 USAC West Coast non wing car) that night. Putting wings on my car that night was basically to make some laps in it. That is all it was about. So I really consider Saturday as our first real attempt at wing racing with a focus. I was really happy with the way it turned out.”

Saturday’s Kings of Thunder race was the “Dave Helm Memorial” and it featured some of the fastest wing sprint car drivers in the Golden State. Roa was less than a half-second off the third-fastest car in hot laps (he was one of the last cars out for qualifying but problems with the clocks saw officials revert to hot laps for times). For his heat race, he started and finished seventh.

In his #91R car that looked a bit strange to his legion of fans due to the wings, Roa started the main in 13th. He kept his nose clean and advanced forward to finish ninth. His lap 11 time of 14.486 was the ninth-fastest time of all the starters in the race.

“They are really fast,” Roa laughed when asked what he learned about racing winged cars. “It is weird. You know, being in the world of sprint cars, wing cars carry a lot more corner speed. Until you get into the seat, it is hard to imagine how far you drive into the corner on the throttle. I never really got there all night. I kept getting farther and farther into the corner on the throttle but it has been 12 years now driving a non-wing car and I am trying to tell myself to throw it all out the window and drive in farther.”

With the way things went for Roa on the night, he has confirmed that his next two races will be in sprint car racing’s most famous series, the World of Outlaws. Those races will come on March 25th at the Bakersfield Speedway, and March 26th at his home track, Perris Auto Speedway.

“That is our plan, Roa confirmed via phone on Tuesday night. “That is why we are doing that practice at Perris the week before the next race. Just going to go out and burn 100 laps or so to get me some seat time. Going to Bakersfield first will be nice. Somewhere that is a little bit slower and slicker. Then go to Perris where it carries a lot of speed. Obviously, they are tracks I am comfortable at. We are going to go with that plan. I think we will be all right.”

Roa also confirmed that he will be doing six more-winged races (that includes the two World of Outlaws dates) in 2022. You can see those dates and all of his other dates on his race schedule at the end of this release.

Brody Roa merchandise is available online. You can see it all in his store which is packed with great items including t-shirts, sweatshirts, caps, beanies, baby onesies, plush blankets, jigsaw puzzles, stickers, notebooks, tote bags, wine tumblers, mugs, bandana pet collars, and more. To check it out, please visit the following website https://www.brodyroa.com/shop/.

In 2022, Roa will race USAC/CRA, USAC National, and other select events, in his #91R BR Performance/HD Industries Eagle. He will also drive the #8M for May Motorsports in select USAC West Coast events. The 2019 USAC Southwest and 2017 USAC West Coast champion is always open to discussing other driving opportunities.

Roa and the team want to thank the following sponsors for making the 2022 season possible. HD Industries, Burris Racing, Sander Engineering, Inland Rigging, Caltrol, “Biker” Bruce Fischer, Competition Suspension, ALR Virtual Services, K-1 Race Gear, Molecule, Rod End Supply, Driven Racing Oil, Baldwin Filters, and NGK Spark Plugs. In addition, the veteran driver offers thanks to RDM Mechanics, Fastenal, Coopers Propane, Ten West Towing, Ten West Environmental, TJM Distribution, and Westco International for sponsoring the #8M he will pilot for Jayson May on 10 occasions in 2022.

If you or your company would like to jump on board and receive recognition as a team partner throughout the 2022 racing season, please give the two-time USAC champion racer a phone call or drop him a note at the contact information on the top of this release.
