Notes of Interest

● Subway® restaurants is back with Kevin Harvick and the No. 4 team of Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR). Subway put its Eat Fresh Refresh™ on the fast track by becoming a primary sponsor of the championship-winning NASCAR Cup Series team last year and Harvick delivered. He finished among the top-10 in each of the three races where Subway was the primary sponsor of the No. 4 Ford Mustang. Harvick finished second in his Subway debut Sept. 18 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, ninth in the very next race Sept. 26 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and third Oct. 24 at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City. In 2022, Harvick earned his own Subway signature sub – the Full-Throttle Ham – which features thin-sliced Black Forest ham, crispy hickory-smoked bacon, pepper-jack cheese, and lettuce and tomato on fresh-baked artisan Italian bread, all finished with yellow mustard. It is available exclusively on Subway.com and the Subway app, and can be delivered straight to your door via Subway Delivery, powered by DoorDash. Subway has a $0 delivery fee on all Subway Delivery orders and guests can still earn and redeem Subway MyWay® Rewards points.

● Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, serves as a homecoming for Harvick. The driver of the No. 4 Subway Ford Mustang is from Bakersfield, California, roughly three hours northwest of Fontana. He joins three other Californians competing at Auto Club Speedway – SHR teammate Cole Custer from Ladera Ranch, Kyle Larson from Elk Grove, and Tyler Reddick from Corning. In the 25-year history of the track, only four Californians have won a NASCAR Cup Series race at Fontana – Vallejo’s Jeff Gordon, El Cajon’s Jimmie Johnson, Larson and Harvick – but they’ve won 11 of the 31 races held.

● Harvick’s lone NASCAR Cup Series victory at Fontana came on March 27, 2011 when he beat Johnson by .144 of a second. Harvick led only one lap, but it was the only one that mattered. He took the lead from Johnson on the final lap to score his 15th career Cup Series win. Harvick has won 43 races since. His 58 career Cup Series victories puts him 10th on the all-time series win list.

● Harvick and Kurt Busch lead the NASCAR Cup Series in starts at Auto Club Speedway with 27 starts apiece – a streak that spans four decades (1997-2022). Next best in this category is Kurt’s younger brother, Kyle Busch, who has 22 career starts at Fontana.

● Harvick’s NASCAR Cup Series stat line at Fontana includes a win, seven top-five finishes, 10 top-10 finishes and 237 laps led. His average finish across his 27 career starts is 15.1, thanks in large part to completing 98.7 percent of the laps available (6,074 of 6,156 laps).

● Harvick has been competing at Auto Club Speedway ever since it opened in 1997. His first start at the 2-mile oval came on Oct. 18, 2017 in The No Fear Challenge NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race driving the No. 75 entry for Wayne and Connie Spears of Agua Dulce, California. Harvick started 28th and finished 20th, completing 99 of 100 laps. Harvick has made a total of four Truck Series starts at Fontana, with his best result coming in his most recent Truck Series start at the track – eighth on Feb. 23, 2007.

● Harvick also competed at Auto Club Speedway with Wayne and Connie Spears in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. He made two K&N starts for the family-owned team at Fontana in 1998. In his first start on May 2, Harvick started second and finished second, leading 32 laps in between. Ken Schrader took the win by 1.314 seconds. In Harvick’s K&N return to Fontana on July 18, he one-upped his performance from two months prior. Harvick started from the pole and ended with the win, taking the checkered flag by 1.15 seconds over Austin Cameron. He led 52 of the race’s 100 laps. Those victories were part of a five-win campaign that led Harvick to the 1998 K&N Pro Series West championship.

● The NASCAR Xfinity Series represents another successful element of Harvick’s career at Auto Club Speedway. In 20 starts at the track, Harvick has finished among the top-10 17 times. He has 12 top-fives, highlighted by a win in his second-to-last Xfinity Series start at Fontana. Harvick took the checkered flag on March 21, 2015 with an impressive 3.317-second margin of victory over second-place Brendan Gaughan.

Kevin Harvick, Driver of the No. 4 Subway Ford Mustang

You’ve raced at Fontana 27 times in a Cup car, but is it a whole new ballgame going there with this NextGen car?

“For sure, because you just don’t know. It’s always tire management, it’s always moving around the racetrack – being able to run the top and the bottom – but this car is so different in the way that it uses the tires, and the way it uses the right-rear tire, especially. I think as you look at that, it could turn into a tire conservation type of situation to where just have to pick a speed and run the speed so you can make it through a whole fuel run. You just don’t know those things until you go do it, so being able to adapt and adjust is going to be important.”

Has simulation helped you gain an understanding as to how the NextGen car will perform at a place like Fontana?

“We’ll have our places where the simulator helps a lot, but there are some places where it won’t help a lot. When you go to Fontana, a two-mile racetrack where you have the most aggressive tire falloff of all the racetracks we go to, it’ll be trial by fire. It’s just not like anything else, and not knowing about the car, that’s where I go back to practice and make sure that you’re involved in everything that’s going on, because making sure that you take care of the tires, and making sure you can make them last, is going to be extremely important.”

You just spent a week at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and now you embark on a three-race stretch of events on the West Coast, starting with Fontana. How have you been able to simultaneously prepare for Daytona and this West Coast swing?

“I think for Fontana, because it’s the first one, you’ll be prepared from the shop. When you go from the first race to the second race to the third race, you’re probably going to spend some time in one of those two racetracks’ garages working on the vehicle, preparing it for the next week. So our trailers and things are prepared well, but it’s not like working in your shop. There’s going to be a lot of racetrack garage and parking lot work that will go on.”

Is it preservation over performance for this three-race stretch?

“Between the Daytona 500 and the West Coast swing, you can put a huge damper on the first half of your year if you’re not careful, just because of the fact that the progression with the car has to be there. If everything’s torn up, the progression of the car slows down because our sport is all about details, and you can’t detail the car to the point that it needs to be detailed in order to make it run as fast as it needs to run. Not having torn-up racecars is as important as anything in coming home from the West Coast swing.”

Despite not scoring a win in 2021, you were still extremely proud of everything you and the team accomplished because, week-in and week-out, you grinded it out just to get the best finish possible, and when the season ended, you were fifth in points, just like you were in 2000 when you won nine races. Can you expound on that?

“With our current points system, the emphasis is on winning, but there’s way more that goes into our sport than just winning. And the way that we raced last year was the way that you won the championship, pre-playoff format. I think that our experience being able to be around those situations allowed us to put ourselves into the exact same position to have the exact same result that we had with nine wins just because of the fact that we knew how to race and get the most out of every week. And we understood that we were at a deficit from a vehicle standpoint, but we knew how to race better than anybody else and that’s just what it boils down to. A lot of guys had the fastest cars, and the fastest car wound up winning the championship. And for us, it was just a different style of racing that we had to revert back to in order to get the best results out of the season. But that goes with the experience of the team and the organization to know that we’re here, and how do we get there, and just dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s and doing the things that we needed to do to keep ourselves in position in order to get good finishes out of our races.”

Stage Front Tickets to Debut with McDowell at Auto Club Speedway

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (February 22, 2022) – Stage Front Tickets will make their foray into NASCAR this weekend, as they debut sponsorship with Front Row Motorsports and driver of the No. 34 Ford Mustang of Michael McDowell at Auto Club Speedway this Sunday.

It will be the first time the series returns to the Southern California track in two years, and for what could be the last time before it is reconfigured. The last time at the Auto Club Speedway, McDowell qualified eighth, a career best at the track.

“There is always something cool about racing at Auto Club Speedway. Whether it’s the scenery or the fans, there was always a buzz in the garage that made it exciting. With the success of the clash and seeing the amount of fans that were at the track a few weeks ago, I’m expecting it to be more of the same. Add on top of that the excitement we saw from the 500 a couple days ago, and the turnout that was there, I’m expecting the same this weekend.”

McDowell and crew will take to the track Sunday, following a Saturday double header of practice, followed immediately by qualifying. The team, coming off a dominating weekend in Daytona, leading nearly every practice, finishing second in their Duel, and seventh in the Daytona 500.

“We really have hit the ground running with our program this season with Blake leading our crew,” stated McDowell. “The amount of work and preparation that he and the entire team have put into the cars this off-season has been something of a well oiled machine. We have already had a lot of success between the Clash and Speedweeks at Daytona, and I’m excited to see what we have out in California this weekend.”

Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race begins at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX.

INDYCAR DRIVERS ON THIS YEAR’s INTERNATIONAL BROADCAST PARTNERSHIPS

“The fans are so important to INDYCAR, and they motivate us racers to give them the best show possible each weekend. It’s extra special to me that my Brazilian fans have access to all of the INDYCAR action. My home country is where my heart is, and although I’m racing here in America, I want to make them proud back home.” – Helio Castroneves, Meyer Shank Racing

“INDYCAR’s 17-race schedule is dynamic and challenging, featuring competitive events at each and every stop. Canal+ is the place for French fans to catch all of my races, including my first attempt in ‘The Greatest Spectacle in Racing’ at the 106th Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge in May.” – Romain Grosjean, Andretti Autosport

“It’s great news to be able to showcase what INDYCAR will be doing this year. It’s been a huge goal of mine, specifically the past year, for everyone back home in Mexico to be able to watch. I think it’s great that INDYCAR has found a solution, along with ESPN, for everyone in Mexico to be able to cheer me and Arrow McLaren SP on. I look forward to making my home country proud.” – Pato O’Ward, Arrow McLaren SP

“It’s going to be an amazing NTT INDYCAR SERIES season filled with action-packed racing and exciting finishes. I’m so excited that fans in Spain can tune in to watch every minute of the action as our team goes for the Astor Cup crown again.” – Alex Palou, Chip Ganassi Racing

“The variety of drivers that compete in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES is, in my opinion, what makes us one of the premier motorsports disciplines on the planet. As the sport continues to grow, we need to make sure that it is accessible to as many fans around the world as possible. I know the next Will Power is out there watching, and being able to watch our races on television will help keep top talent coming into the sport for years to come.” – Will Power, Team Penske

“Gaora is a great partner for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and will be the go-to place for Japanese fans to see me compete in 2022. From start to finish, this season’s racing will be incredible, and I hope everyone tunes in.” – Takuma Sato, Dale Coyne Racing with RWR

USMA to Present the First Annual Outside Groove Racing Show this Weekend in Knoxville, Tennesse

The Outside Groove Racing Show announced that the U.S. Motorsports Association (USMA) has become the presenting sponsor of the first annual edition of the Outside Groove Racing Show. The show will be held February 25-26 in Knoxville, Tennessee inside the Jacob Building at Chilhowee Park.

Racers, fans, and a rapidly growing list of racing industry vendors will gather to network and share in their love for all things motorsports. The show is open to the general public.

The USMA was officially formed in 2015 by a coalition of industry businesses, racetracks, and sanctioning organizations, who recognized racing’s need for greater organization, economic data, and state- and local-level advocacy, primarily for grassroots racing.

The USMA has been instrumental in solving state- and local-level issues for many racetracks across the nation, providing expert advocacy, consulting, and economic research data. A recent win came when drag racing returned to Long Island for the first time in over 17 years, which was in part due to USMA’s economic report titled, “The Importance of a Drag Strip On Long Island.”

Other research has included the first-ever statewide study of motorsports across Pennsylvania and uncovering the tremendous economic impact of the IMCA Super Nationals held annually in Boone, Iowa. (For more on the USMA, read “USMA: An Advocate for Grassroots Racing”.)

“Unlike the stick-and-ball sports, the benefits of racing are not always understood by our elected officials and the general public,” said J.A. Ackley, Outside Groove Racing Show promoter. “People unacquainted with the sport often have negative misconceptions about motorsports. The USMA is making an impact by educating the public and building permanent relationships with lawmakers. At the Outside Groove Racing Show, we share the USMA’s mission to support all forms of racing.”

“Outside Groove has pioneered a new show that will serve the Southeast racing community with an event that is shaping up to be fun and productive. We are excited to have the opportunity to attend and share our message with racers and fans,” said Shawn Stewart, Executive Director of the USMA. “We know from our research that grassroots racing is a massive economic driver and job creator across America. The majority of that impact comes from grassroots racing and a large portion exists in the Southeast, so a trade show in the region makes good sense.”

NTT INDYCAR SERIES Ready To Roll into 2022 Season

INDIANAPOLIS (Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022) – Momentum and anticipation continue to grow for the 2022 NTT INDYCAR SERIES opener Sunday, Feb. 27 on the Streets of St. Petersburg for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding. Here’s a look at the year ahead for North America’s premier open-wheel series:

Traditions Return for NBC Showcase

The NTT INDYCAR SERIES season begins in grand fashion with the first six races on NBC network television. Four May weekends also will be featured on broadcast television, including Last Chance Qualifying and the Fast Nine Shootout leading up to the 106th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, Sunday, May 29.

Among the INDYCAR traditions to return in 2022 will be the Honda Indy Toronto. After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the series returns to the famous Toronto street layout Sunday, July 17. The area is rich with INDYCAR SERIES history as it first hosted the series in 1986. Simon Pagenaud, who drives for Meyer Shank Racing, is the last to win there, in 2019.

The following weekend, INDYCAR returns to the ultra-fast and thrilling D-shaped oval of Iowa Speedway for the new Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend doubleheader Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24. A festival-like atmosphere of concerts and other attractions will greet the series, including driver Josef Newgarden of Team Penske, who last won on the track known as “The Fastest Short Track on the Planet” in 2020.

In all, NBC will feature a record 14 NTT INDYCAR SERIES races in 2022 with two events set to appear on USA Network. Races, practices and qualifying sessions will be featured on Peacock Premium, with NBC Group’s expanding streaming service also providing exclusive coverage from the Streets of Toronto.

For the first time, Telemundo Deportes will provide Spanish-language coverage of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES season opener, the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge and the season finale. The award-winning INDYCAR Radio Network has coverage of every on-track session throughout 2022.

“Anticipation towards the start of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES season is palpable,” Penske Entertainment Corp. President and CEO Mark Miles said. “It is terrific to know the wait is almost over as we approach a marquee year for our series and its stars.

“Kicking off the season in St. Petersburg, followed by three thrilling spring events, is an ideal lead-in to the Month of May, where demand is outpacing all years since the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500. The season hits another gear following the ‘500’ with a jam-packed summer punctuated by our return to Iowa and Nashville. Both will prove to be extraordinary events. Combined with our TV partner NBC, we cannot wait to showcase the daring and bold athletes of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.”

Paddock Pieces

A young, diverse and successful class of six audacious rookies are set to join and compete against no fewer than 20 veteran NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers, including reigning series champion Alex Palou. With the expansion of A.J. Foyt Racing and Meyer Shank Racing, the 2022 championship totals 26 full-time entries. It is the largest full-time entry list for the INDYCAR SERIES in a decade.

Among the battles to follow will be the PeopleReady Force for Good Challenge, announced last month. The first entry to win on all three types of circuits – road course, street circuit and oval – will split $1 million with the race team and the driver’s chosen charity. PeopleReady is offering an additional $10,000 to the winner of every race this season, also to be split with the driver’s favorite charitable organization.

In 2022, INDYCAR will gradually introduce the EM Motorsport Marshalling System. The new addition will supplement the use of cloth flags with up to 20 EM Motorsport light panels deployed on road and street circuits. The ultra-bright LED displays will use the same flag codes as existing flags and will still be operated by track marshals via a handheld console.

When fully implemented, all race cars and light panels will carry EM Motorsport GPS units, which will create marshalling sectors to help identify cars as they pass through local yellow sectors. New to 2022, any car that passes through a local yellow will lose that timed lap in practice and qualifying, which will help expedite session officiating. As in the past, any driver that causes a local yellow will lose their fastest timed lap.

Other adjustments to the 2022 rulebook include, for safety, the banning of “pushing” or assisting cars out of their pit stall at the completion of a pit stop.

Pit box locations will be selected in order of entrant qualification results from the previous event in 2022. The order will not be affected by penalties for unapproved engine changes. The process of selecting pit positions for the Indianapolis 500 will remain based on “500” qualifying.

The use of barge boards on the Dallara AK-18 chassis are now optional on all ovals with the introduction of the aerodynamic tool at Texas Motor Speedway, Iowa Speedway and World Wide Technology Raceway in 2022. The curved, plate-shaped piece of carbon fiber, located on the leading edge of the underwing, creates front downforce while reducing the reliance of the front wing.

“In race conditions, it should be a benefit to a trailing car,” said Tino Belli, INDYCAR director of aerodynamic development. “Using barge boards combined with less front wing angle will allow cars to follow more closely while still avoiding an aero washout affect through the corners. It also follows the philosophy we have always had with the universal AK-18 to create downforce with the underwing rather than being reliant on the front wing. These optional barge boards will become another crucial tool in the teams’ aerodynamic arsenal.”

Also, where possible, NTT INDYCAR SERIES non-oval practice sessions will be blocked for 60 minutes to allow for a better opportunity to complete the traditional 45-minute session – compensating for unexpected red flag periods.

“We are constantly evaluating ways to improve the NTT INDYCAR SERIES,” INDYCAR President Jay Frye said. “We examine every aspect – from safety and officiating to on-track competition – and believe the changes will add to the series’ level of energy, momentum and deep competitive balance.”

On the Horizon

It is expected to be another season of historic moments for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. Six-time series champion Scott Dixon returns to drive the No. 9 PNC Bank Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing. The 41-year-old continues his pursuit to tie the legendary A.J. Foyt for all-time INDYCAR SERIES championships with seven.

Helio Castroneves returns full-time in 2022 to drive the No. 06 AutoNation/SiriusXM Meyer Shank Racing Honda. The 46-year-old will attempt to become the first five-time winner of the Indianapolis 500. Forty-year-old Will Power once again will pilot the No. 12 Verizon 5G Team Penske Chevrolet and begins the season just four poles away from tying the legendary Mario Andretti’s all-time record of 67.

Meanwhile, the series prepares for the future as work continues with Chevrolet and Honda toward a new engine package. The 2.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 with hybrid technology, which is expected to produce a total of 900 horsepower, is expected to debut in 2023.

“Last season was an amazing year with historic storylines throughout 2021,” Frye said. “With the effort by everyone in the offseason and the continued growth of the paddock, we expect 2022 to be even better. We cannot wait to see it play out.”

Frontline Enterprises Continues Support of Todd Gilliland

Gilliland is thrilled to carry the Frontline Enterprises brand again this season.

“Having Frontline Enterprises come on board in my first Cup Series season means so much to me,” said Gilliland. “They have been with me for the past few seasons in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, and even before that. Frontline Enterprises will also be an associate partner of Gilliland and the No. 38 Ford Mustang team all season.

Rookie Cindric Reaps Traditional Rewards After Memorable DAYTONA 500 Triumph, Starts His New Tradition

2022 DAYTONA 500 Champion Austin Cindric (left) poses with Daytona International Speedway President Frank Kelleher after Cindric made his barefoot mark in concrete that will soon be a part of the Speedway’s ‘Champion’s Sidewalk’ in front of the Ticket and Tours building & Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.

With No Shoe and Sock he Makes His Stamp on 500 Lure; Customary Rolex, Rings, Leather Jackets, Coveted Trophies Awarded

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 21, 2022) – A day after placing his name in Daytona International Speedway’s record book with his first career NASCAR Cup Series triumph, rookie Austin Cindric was honored Monday during a “Champion’s Celebration” inside the track’s Ruoff Victory Lane. As is customary, there were plenty of special gifts awarded only to a DAYTONA 500 Champion and his team, but then out of nowhere, Cindric began his own tradition.

One of the tasks at hand was for Cindric to place his handprints and footprint into wet concrete that will soon be a permanent square on the Speedway’s ‘Champion’s Sidewalk’ in front of the Ticket and Tours building and Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. Every footprint of past DAYTONA 500 Champions actually showcases the driver’s imprint, using the bottom his racing shoe. Not Cindric, however, who took off his shoe and sock before planted his bare foot in the mushy cement.

“I guess I just like being me, and sometimes that may be different from others,” said Cindric, who afterwards wiped down his foot. “I can wash my feet because I decided I didn’t want to mess with my racing shoes, or the shoes I have on today. Hopefully the fans will think it is cool with my actual footprint.”

The Champion’s Celebration also includes the Champion Crew chief and car owner. Cindric, driver of the No. 2 Ford for Team Penske, was joined by crew chief Jeremy Bullins and Greg Penske, who was subbing for his legendary father and car owner, Roger Penske.

They received customary 2022 DAYTONA 500 Champion rings and 2022 black leather jackets while a special Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona was presented to Cindric as the Champion driver. Bullins was awarded the Cannonball Baker (long-time NASCAR Commissioner) Trophy as the Champion Crew Chief, while the unique Harley J. Earl Trophy for the Champion car owner, was on display.

Cindric, the 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series Champion, became the ninth driver in history to post his first career victory in the season-opening DAYTONA. He joined Tiny Lund (1963), Mario Andretti (1967), Pete Hamilton (1970), Derrike Cope (1990), Sterling Marlin (1994), Michael Waltrip (2001), Trevor Bayne (2011), Michael McDowell (2021).

NASCAR returns to Daytona in August with the running of the Wawa 250 (Aug. 26) and the Coke Zero Sugar 400 (Aug. 27), the final race that will determine the driver lineup in the NASCAR Playoffs. About Daytona International Speedway
Daytona International Speedway is a state-of-the-art motorsports facility and was awarded the SportsBusiness Journal’s prestigious Sports Business Award for Sports Facility of the Year in 2016. Daytona International Speedway is the home of The Great American Race – the DAYTONA 500. Though the season-opening NASCAR Cup Series event garners most of the attention – as well as the largest audience in motorsports – the approximately 500-acre motorsports complex, also known as the World Center of Racing, boasts the most diverse schedule of racing on the globe. In addition to at least nine major event weekends, the Speedway grounds are also used extensively for events that include concerts, civic and social gatherings, car shows, photo shoots, production vehicle testing and police motorcycle training. The iconic venue will be the site of a host of motorsports events early in 2022, beginning with AHRMA Classic Motofest and the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA in January, and the 64th DAYTONA 500, which will debut the first points race for NASCAR’s ‘Next Gen’ car as part of Speedweeks Presented by AdventHealth in February. The tradition-rich 81st Annual Bike Week At DAYTONA returns in March, featuring DAYTONA Supercross and the DAYTONA 200, and in May with the Heroes Honor Festival. Later in the summer during Independence Day weekend, the track, in association with Torneos, will host Soccer Fest before the NASCAR Cup Series returns for the final race of the regular season with the Coke Zero Sugar 400 on Aug. 27.
