· Socios will be the primary for both RFR machines at Watkins Glen this weekend, with an Ice theme on the No. 17, and a Fire theme on the No. 6.

There’s Nothing You Can’t Do, Now You’re in New York
In 105 NCS starts at WGI, Roush Fenway has three wins, 23 top-five and 41 top-10 finishes along with four poles. All three of RFR’s victories came with former driver and NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin (1993, 1994, 1995).

Top of the List, King of the Hill

Martin secured three-straight wins for Roush Fenway at the famed New York road course from 1993-95. He started on the pole for each of the three races and led a combined 183 laps during the three-year streak.

Tale of the Tape – Road Courses

In 226 road course starts all-time in the NCS, Jack Roush’s Fords have won five races and tallied 38 top-five and 77 top-10 finishes, along with six poles. In those 226 starts, an RFR Ford has led 577 laps for an average finish of 17.7.

Socios Makes Debut in New York This Weekend

It was announced back in May that Socios – the leading blockchain platform for the global sports and entertainment industry – announced the $ROUSH Fan Token. Fan tokens are collectible digital assets, minted on the Chiliz blockchain that provide owners with access to voting rights in polls, VIP rewards, exclusive promotions, AR-enabled features, chat forums, games and competitions on the mobile app Socios.com.

Through the $ROUSH Fan Tokens, fans were given the opportunity to vote on and help influence all assets associated with the race team at WGI, including the paint scheme for both RFR machines. A ‘Fire and Ice’ theme was decided on, with the No. 6 receiving the fire theme, and ice on the No. 17 team. Roush Fenway was the first U.S. sports team to launch a fan token on Socios.com.

Menards/Moen Team Back to Work After Two-Week Break

Matt DiBenedetto and the No. 21 Menards/Moen team are headed to Watkins Glen International hoping to pick up where they left off when NASCAR took a two-week break so broadcast partner NBC could focus on the Tokyo Olympics.

In their most recent run, at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, DiBenedetto and the team finished 11th, their third-straight finish of 11th or better. That came after finishes of ninth at Atlanta Motor Speedway and 10th at Road America.

The Road America result – and the layout at the Glen – have DiBenedetto optimistic heading into Sunday’s 200.5-mile race on the fast, 11-turn Watkins Glen course.

“The Glen is fun,” he said. “It’s way different than any other road course since it’s so high speed.

“After our speed we had at Road America I’m way more encouraged to go to Watkins Glen.”

DiBenedetto said he and the Menards/Moen team have been putting in extra effort on their road course cars as the elite Cup Series is running seven road course races this season.

“We have been working hard on the road courses,” he said. “And we have a lot of good momentum on our side.” DiBenedetto said.

There will be no qualifying or pre-race practice at Watkins Glen, and DiBenedetto will line up 14th for the start. The line-up is set by a metric based on performances in the most recent race.

Sunday’s 90-lap Go Bowling at the Glen is set to get the green flag just after 3 p.m. Eastern Time with TV coverage on NBCSN. Stage breaks will come at Laps 20 and 40.

John Hunter Nemechek – No. 4 Mobil 1 Tundra Camping World Trucks Watkins Glen Preview

John Hunter Nemechek: Driver, No. 4 Mobil 1 Toyota

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Overview:
Event: United Rentals 176, Race 15 of 22, 72 Laps – 20/25/27; 176.4 Miles
Location: Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International Raceway (2.45-mile, seven-turn road course)
Date/Broadcast: Aug. 7, 2021, at 12:30 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR 90

Neme’chek’ The Facts:

  • John Hunter Nemechek and the No. 4 Mobil 1 team head into the final regular season race of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season at Watkins Glen International Speedway already having already clinched the regular season championship and the 15-playoff point bonus that comes with it. Nemechek has put together a remarkable season thus far in his first season driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM). The 24-year-old driver leads the Trucks Series regulars in wins (five), stage wins (nine), top fives (eight), laps led (485), fastest laps run (237), driver rating (119.4), average running position (5.906) and average finish (7.4). Including the 15 points earned for the regular season championship, he will enter the post season with at least 49 playoff points, plus any he earns at Watkins Glen Saturday.
  • Nemechek registered his fifth win of 2021 June 26 at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa. The talented wheelman was able to beat KBM owner-driver Kyle Busch head-to-head for the third time this season. Nemechek also bested his boss at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway in March and at Richmond (Va.) Raceway in April. Busch finished second to his pupil in all three of those events. Busch was victorious at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway in March and Kansas Speedway in May. In addition to beating Busch three times, Nemechek also outdueled reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott to pick up the victory at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth in June. So, he holds a four-to-two advantage this season going heads up against the last two Cup Series champions.
  • Saturday’s race marks the first time that the Truck Series has raced at Watkins Glen since 2000. Nemechek finished 12th in the 2019 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen, his lone National Series start at the 2.45-mile road course. In Truck series action, the second-generation driver has one win (Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, 2016), three top-five and four top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 10.3 across seven road course starts. Earlier this year on the Daytona International Speedway Road Course, Nemechek won the opening stage, but ran out of fuel as he was headed to pit road during the second stage. After going a lap down, the No. 4 team rallied back to score a third-place finish.
  • Nemechek is an 11-time winner in Camping World Truck Series action, winning at least one race each season from 2015 to 2018 for his family-owned team, NEMCO Motorsports, and returning to victory lane this year with KBM. Across 116 career starts in NASCAR’s third division, the second-generation driver has compiled two poles, 1094 laps led, 36 top-five and 61 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 12.5. The North Carolina native qualified for the Camping World Truck Series playoffs in each of his two full-time seasons, finishing eighth in the championship standings in both 2016 and 2017. He was voted the series most popular driver in 2015.
  • Eric Phillips returns to KBM to lead the No. 4 team this season. Phillips led the No. 18 team at KBM in its debut season in 2010 and helped build the organization into one of the premier teams in all of NASCAR before departing at the end of the 2014 season. Under his guidance, the No. 18 team won eight races in its inaugural campaign and became the first team in Truck Series history to capture an owner’s championship in its first season of competition. In 2014, the Illinois native led the No. 51 team to an owner’s championship and his team’s 10 wins spearheaded KBM to a single-season Truck Series record of 14 wins. His 42 career Truck Series victories make him the winningest crew chief in Truck Series history, with 32 of those coming while at KBM. Phillips’s drivers have earned top-five finishes in two of this three road course events in Truck Series action, with Erik Jones finishing third at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in 2014 and Nemechek also finishing third at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course earlier this year.

John Hunter Nemechek, Driver Q&A:

What does it mean to have already secured the regular season Truck Series championship?
“Winning the regular season Truck Series championship and kind of locking it up at Knoxville a couple weeks ago allows us to go to Watkins Glen focused on one thing and that’s to get seven more playoff points. We’re excited about winning the regular season championship, when we came into this deal, we were #Here4Wins, so we want to win everything that we can. Winning it also give us a huge bonus for playoff points going into the playoffs which should help us even more and kind of give us a little advantage going into the first round.”

Does having raced at Watkins Glen in an Xfinity car previously give you an advantage heading into Saturday?
“Since I’ve raced Xfinity at Watkins Glen previously, I definitely think that will help me as a driver. There are a lot of drivers in the field this weekend at Watkins Glen that haven’t really run a lot at Watkins Glen, they’ve maybe run some K&N stuff and ARCA stuff there, but no really long races, so hopefully that plays into an advantage with there not being any practice and kind of plays into our favor. There is kind of little tips and tricks of getting around Watkins Glen and things that you kind of have to look out for and places that you can make speed, so hopefully we have all those speed secrets.”

How does racing at Watkins Glen compare to the other road courses that the Truck Series race at?
“There’s nothing like Watkins Glen. It has a lot of elevation change, not as much as Sonoma, but it’s super fast. I feel like the tires don’t wear and the track surface is definitely newer, and you are just running qualifying laps every single lap.”

John Hunter Nemechek Career Highlights:

  • Eleven-time winner in Camping World Truck Series action, winning at least one race each season from 2015 to 2018 for his family-owned team, NEMCO Motorsports. • Qualified for the Camping World Truck Series playoffs in each of his two full-time seasons, finishing eighth in the championship standings in both 2016 and 2017.
  • Produced three top-10 finishes and an average result of 22.4 while competing for rookie of the year honors in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2020. • KBM holds the Camping World Truck Series records for most career wins (88) and most wins in a single season (14 in 2014). With his victory at the Bristol Motor Speedway Dirt Track, Truex Jr. became the 16th different driver to win a Truck Series event for KBM. In addition to collecting a series-record seven Owner’s Championships, the organization has produced two championship-winning drivers: Erik Jones (2015) and Christopher Bell (2017).

Driver Quotes

“It will be good to get back in the car at Watkins Glen thisweekend. This is crunch time for the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs and we need to get off on the right foot during this stretch. This Pilot Flying J Spicy Chicken Sandwich Chevrolet has been good on road courses this year, and we were third last time out at Road America. Bummy (crew chief Mike Bumgarner) and our No. 1 team are up for this challenge, and it starts this weekend.” – Michael Annett

“It’s going to be great to get back to Watkins Glen this weekend. It’s definitely a track that I’ve always enjoyed going to, and we have had some really solid runs here over the last couple of years. If we can just be smart and take care of our car all day long, I feel like we will have a great shot to contend for the victory with our hellowater Chevrolet on Saturday. This two-week break has been great, but I am ready to get back to the track and get going again.” – Justin Allgaier

“The two off weeks were great for me to get refocused as we head into the last half of the season. The year hasn’t started off the way we planned, so it’s a good refresher for our team. I’m really confident heading into Watkins Glen as I have put a lot of focus on road-course racing. I’ll be racing ARCA and Trucks before the Xfinity race, too, so I will get to learn the track before hopping into the No. 8 Saturday afternoon.” – Sam Mayer

“I’ve only been to Watkins Glen once in the Xfinity car since we didn’t get to race there last year. Road courses have been our strong suit and they really fit my driving style. I have a lot of confidence in this No. 9 team that they will give me another fast Bass Pro Shops/TrueTimber/Black Rifle Coffee Camaro this weekend and hopefully we can put this car in to Victory Lane at the end of the day.” – Noah Gragson

Chandler Smith – No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass Tundra Camping World Trucks Watkins Glen Preview

Chandler Smith: Driver, No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass® Toyota

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Overview:
Event: United Rentals 176, Race 15 of 22, 72 Laps – 20/25/27; 176.4 Miles
Location: Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International Raceway (2.45-mile, seven-turn road course)
Date/Broadcast: Aug. 7, 2021 at 12:30 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR 90

Mr. Smith Turns Left and Right:

  • Chandler Smith and the No. 18 JBL team head to Watkins Glen Saturday looking to solidify their spot in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series playoffs. Entering the regular season finale, Smith holds a 40-point advantage over Derek Kraus for the 10th and final spot on the playoff grid. Saturday’s race marks the first time that the Truck Series has raced at the 2.45-mile, seven-turn road course since 2000.
  • When the Camping World Truck Series left Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, Smith sat 12th on the playoff grid, 35 points behind Johnny Sauter for the 10th position with six races remaining in the regular season. Over the last five races he has made a remarkable rally by tallying 171 total points, fifth-most in the series during that span. Smith’s average finish over the last five races is 10.2, compared to an average finish of 20.4 during the first nine races of the season.
  • Smith has stayed busy while the Truck Series has been on hiatus for the second half of July. On July 17, he was married to his high school sweetheart Kenzie Grams in a ceremony on the beach in Oak Island, N.C. The following weekend he got behind the wheel of a Super Late Model for the Twin 100s at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Fla. On Friday July 23, he led 94 of the 100 laps, but surrendered the lead to late model ace Bubba Pollard with three laps remaining and ended up the bridesmaid. Saturday, July 24, Smith took the lead on lap 30 and remained out front for the remainder of the 100-lap event to earn his first career Blizzard Series victory. Finally, on Saturday July 31, he finished second to Matt Craig in the CARS Super Late Model Tour Throwback 276 at Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway.
  • Across 14 total starts this season, Smith has three top-five and five top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 16.8. He produced a season-best result of second in the series’ last stop at Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway. He led a race-high 71 laps at the famed dirt track and despite being on worn out tires was able to hold serve on restarts in the first to overtime periods, before surrendering the lead to eventual race winner Austin Hill on the restart in the third overtime.
  • Smith ranks second to his KBM teammate John Hunter Nemechek among full-time Truck Series drivers with 165 laps led this season. The Georgia native has accumulated 119 of those laps led over the last three races. He and Kraus were tied for the most laps led (48) at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway and then Smith led a race-high 71 laps at Knoxville.
  • In his first career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series road course event, the talented teenager recorded the third best average running position (8.315) of all the drivers in the field at the Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway Road Course in February and was in line for a top-10 finish before getting spun from behind while running seventh in the second of what would be three attempts at NASCAR overtime. After pitting for four fresh tires before the start of the final overtime period, Smith would drive from 27th to 12th before the race ended under caution.
  • The Toyota Racing Development driver has 11 top-five, and 14 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 14.4 across 30 career Camping World Truck Series starts. His runner-up finish at Knoxville Raceway equaled the career-best finish he achieved at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in 2019.
  • Veteran crew chief Danny Stockman calls the shots for Smith and the No. 18 team this season. Stockman led the No. 51 team to four wins in his first season atop the pit box at KBM in 2020. He came to the organization with experience as a crew chief in all three national series, including a Truck Series championship with Austin Dillon in 2011 and an Xfinity Series championship with Dillon in 2013. Stockman’s drivers produced an average finish of 12.5 across six NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at Watkins Glen, with Ty Dillon’s eighth-place finish in 2014 being his best result.
  • Safelite AutoGlass – the nation’s largest provider of vehicle glass repair, replacement, and recalibration services – will serve as the primary sponsor on Smith’s Tundra this weekend at Watkins Glen and for 16 races total this season. Smith General Contracting and Fortune-Johnson, a premier building contractor for multifamily projects in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, will be associate partners on the bedtop of the No. 18 Toyota for Saturday’s 72-lap event.

Chandler Smith, Driver Q&A:

You have a 40-point advantage heading into Saturday for the final playoff spot. Will you be on offense or defense?
“I think the biggest thing for us going to Watkins Glen is just not beating ourselves. We’ve got to finish the race, make sure we are 25th or better, have a solid day on my end and the pit crews end and hope everything goes our way.”

You ran inside the top 10 for the majority of the Daytona Road Course race. How have you adapted so quickly to road course racing with very little experience?
“I don’t know to be honest with you, I don’t have a road race background every. My first road course race was in an ARCA car down at Daytona Road Course and the second time I ever hopped in one was Daytona Road Course in a truck. It definitely helps having all the data and all the tools that we have offered for myself, and the team and it definitely helps having a lot of good people surrounding me as well.”

What have you been doing since the Truck Series last raced at Knoxville?
“Actually, I haven’t had any off weekends. Right after Knoxville I went and got married. Right after that, we went down to Pensacola, Fla. to race some Super Late Model races, Friday night finished second and Saturday night won it, and then I raced at Hickory this past weekend and finished second again. Hopefully we’ll combine all these seconds and turn it into a first at Watkins Glen.”

Chandler Smith Career Highlights:

  • Across 30 career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts has recorded 258 laps led, 11 top-five and 14 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 14.4.
  • Posted an average finish of 7.7 across his final seven of 12 total Truck Series starts in 2020, including third-place finishes in the series finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway and his first career superspeedway start at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in October.
  • Produced three top-five and four top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 4.2 across his first four career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts in 2019. He led 55 laps and finished eighth in his Gander Trucks debut at Iowa Speedway last July and then posted top-five finishes in his final three starts, including a runner-up finish at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
  • Has collected nine wins, 10 poles, 1783 laps led, 22 top-five and 29 top-10 finishes en route to an average finish of 5.4 across 34 career ARCA Menards Series starts. Set an ARCA Racing Series record by winning four consecutive poles to start his career and earned his first victory after leading a race-high 102 laps at Madison (Wis.) International Speedway in his fourth series start.

Chandler Smith’s No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass Tundra:
KBM-72: The No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass team will unload a brand new Tundra, KBM-72, for Saturday’s race at Watkins Glen.

KBM Notes of Interest:

  • KBM drivers have earned one win, 85 laps led, nine top-five and 11 top-10 finishes, with an average finish of 12.4 across 29 starts on road courses. Erik Jones collected KBM’s lone road-course victory in 2015 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
  • The No. 18, the number which was on the first Tundra that went to victory lane for KBM in 2010, has 21 career victories.

Chase Briscoe, Driver of the No. 14 HighPoint.com Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing:

You had a nice two-week break, but now we’re back with just four races to go in the regular season. How are you feeling about making your first Cup Series start at Watkins Glen?

“It’s only been two weeks but it feels like forever, so I’m looking forward to getting back to racing. This year, our best results have come on the road courses and now we’ve got two back-to-back, but Watkins Glen is probably lower on the list of my favorite road courses. I’ve only raced there once, so I don’t have a ton of experience there and, like every other track, having no practice will make it that much more challenging because it is a track where the car is maybe a little more important than the driver’s road-course racing ability. I’m going to run the ARCA race on Friday to get some more time on track, learn the turns and try to figure some things out.”

Some call Watkins Glen an aggressive road course. Would you agree?

“Yeah, in some ways. Watkins Glen is so different than some of the other tracks we go to. It’s not a very technical track, but it is very high-speed, so the car is more important. At other road courses, you can kind of beat the car up a little and it’ll still be OK, but you need that aero at The Glen. There really isn’t a slow corner like we have at some other tracks, so you have to have a car that is fast and that you can be aggressive with. It’ll be hard to make up ground on some guys if you get behind. There’s not as much wheel spin there, so you won’t be able to go in and play chicken with one of the other guys, but there are some areas where you can make up a spot if you’ve got the car that can handle it.”

Right now, you’re in a position where you have to win to make the playoffs so, for the next four races, do you roll all the dice to have a shot?

“I would think so, but I’ll leave that to Johnny (Klausmeier, crew chief) since he’s calling the shots. I think the next four races probably are all wild-card races and anything can happen. There’s so much strategy at the road courses and that’s where we’ve been the strongest, so it could happen. Michigan is the 550 (horsepower) package, so whoever can figure that out will be the best, and we all know at Daytona anything can happen. We’ll do whatever we can to try to get a win, but I think these next four races will be pretty exciting for everyone watching.”

Michael Annett Cleared to Return to JRM’s No. 1 Entry at Watkins Glen

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 4, 2021) – Michael Annett, driver of the Pilot Flying J Chevrolet for JR Motorsports, has been medically cleared by NASCAR to return to the seat of the No. 1 car for the Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen International (Aug. 7), the team announced today. Annett rejoins JRM’s four-car lineup following successful surgery to repair a stress fracture in the 35-year-old’s right femur, and the allotted recovery time.

“I can’t thank Dr. Beaver and Dr. Heisel and everyone at OrthoCarolina enough for all of their hard work to get me back in the car in just over three weeks,” Annett said. “The work that Dr. Beaver did during the surgery that allowed me to recover in such a short amount of time is amazing.

“I owe a lot to Austin [Dillon] and Josh [Berry] for filling in for me for those two races, but I cannot wait to be back at the track with my guys and set up a great run into the playoffs.”

Berry scored an eighth-place finish substituting for Annett at New Hampshire Motor Speedway while Dillon drove to an 11th-place effort the previous week at Atlanta Motor Speedway. This weekend, Berry will accompany the Pilot Flying J team as backup driver for Annett, in the event one is needed.

Annett is currently 11th in the NXS driver point standings and will look to build on eight top-10 finishes this season in the runup to the playoffs. Annett has received a medical waiver from NASCAR regarding his playoff status.

Ford Performance NASCAR: Aric Almirola Watkins Glen Media Availability

Ford Performance Notes and Quotes
NASCAR XFINITY Series
NASCAR Zoom Media Availability | Wednesday, August 4, 2021

ARIC ALMIROLA, No. 10 Smithfield Ford Mustang — WHAT DID YOU DO DURING YOUR BREAK? “Right after Loudon, we did some stuff around the house. I had a lot of media to do Monday and Tuesday, and then some stuff to do for sponsors on Wednesday. And then Thursday, we were go-kart testing and Friday we were go-kart practicing and we raced Saturday. Then we got on an airplane after Alex’s go-kart race and went down to Key West and went on vacation down there and did a bunch of fishing and lobster diving and a really fun time down there. I left straight from Key West and got Janice and the kids home back to Charlotte, and then went up to Wisconsin last night and ran an ARCA Midwest Tour Late Model race in Kaukauna, Wisconsin and had some fun doing that, going back to my roots and doing some short track racing. I got to the hotel last night about midnight and got up at 4:30 this morning to catch a 6:30 flight back to Charlotte and I’ve been going hard since I hit the ground here in Charlotte.”

HOW DO YOU LOOK AT THE GLEN THIS WEEKEND? “It’s not a secret that road racing has never been something that I’ve excelled at. I’ve worked really hard at getting better at it, and I feel like I have gotten a lot better at it, but Watkins Glen has been a racetrack that I enjoy going to. It is a fun racetrack to run at. I enjoy making laps around there and racing there. I’ve qualified really well the last few years there. I qualified in the top 10 actually the last few years there, and have just not been able to put the results together and get good finishes. I got wrecked one time, had a transmission issue one time, so we’ve had a lot of different things kind of creep up and hurt our result, but I feel like Watkins Glen is a place I can go and run in the top 10, but I’ve never felt like I was a threat to win there. I’m not sure going there, I still don’t feel like we’ll be a threat to win, but it’s a place that I feel comfortable and feel like if we got some track position and got off strategy on pit sequence or stretch our fuel mileage or something like that, it’s certainly a possibility for us to go there and steal a win and that would be awesome.”

HOW HARD HAVE YOU WORKED ON YOUR RESTARTS? “That’s really what has changed a lot of things about our sport is the restarts. The restarts have gotten wild and crazy and it’s everything. You can gain five or six spots in the first two laps of a restart now and you can lose five or six spots, and even if you’re better than those cars in two laps if you give up six spots, it will take you 50 laps to get those six spots back, so it is really important to get good restarts. That’s something I’ve certainly worked hard at and been mindful of getting better at restarts and maintaining position or advancing positions, and we’ve been able to do that this year. Even though the year has been a struggle at some of the racetracks we’ve gone to, there has been some things to take away that have been marked improvements.”

HOW DO YOU GET BACK INTO A COMPETITIVE MINDSET AFTER A TWO-WEEK BREAK LIKE THIS? “I took a week to vacation out of the two weeks that we’ve had off, but the rest of the time has been spent racing. I was racing with my son, Alex, and then I was racing a late model last night in Wisconsin. It’s who I am. It’s what I do. I enjoy time away. I certainly enjoy clearing my head and get to spend some quality family time, but at the same time going to the racetrack is normal. I really enjoy normal and the routine of going to the racetrack each and every weekend and going to compete.”

DO YOU FEEL LOUDON WAS A TURNING POINT FOR YOU AND THE FORDS OVERALL? “I do. I feel like we’re getting better. I feel like we’re starting to turn the corner. I do think we’ve made significant improvements with our cars, specifically with the 750 package. Nashville was really the one that stood out to me as kind of the turning point for us. We went there and qualified on the pole, ran in the top five a majority of the race, and I think we finished fourth. So, we had a good run there and really started to see light at the end of the tunnel. We started to see that we were making some positive improvements on the race cars and getting things going the right direction motor-wise, car build-wise, just all these things. We went to Loudon and, yeah, it was a great race for Fords all-around. The Penske cars were fast. The Stewart-Haas cars were fast. It was a great race for us, obviously, to be able to go up there and compete and pass a lot of race cars. We started deep in the field, so to pass a lot of race cars and have a great day on pit road and do all the things we needed to do to execute a perfect race to win in a clutch situation where we had to win.”

WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON GOING TO THE INDY ROAD COURSE NEXT WEEK AS OPPOSED TO THE OVAL? “If I’m being honest I’m sad about it, to be just honest. I think racing on the oval was so cool just because I was a kid and went and watched an Indy 500 back in the late nineties. It was a special place and to race on the oval was just special. I mean, you think about the history of that racetrack and the people that have ran around that rectangular racetrack and crossed that yard of bricks and all those things and all the races that went on before you dating back to the early 1900’s, it’s just a very special place so to not race on the oval is weird. I’ll certainly miss it, but I have no doubt that we will put on an exciting race on the road course and it will be a lot of fun to try and figure that place out.”

DO YOU LEAN ON CHASE BRISCOE AT ALL SINCE HE RACED AND WON ON THE COURSE LAST YEAR IN THE XFINITY SERIES? “Absolutely. I will, for sure, lean on him and pick his brain. He ran really well there, obviously won the Xfinity race last year, so I will absolutely lean on him.”

ARE THERE ANY LESSONS THAT WILL CARRY OVER NEXT YEAR EVEN IF PRACTICE STARTS AGAIN? “Yeah, I think practice is gonna be really important with the new car. I think there’s so much to learn, and I think it’s gonna be huge any track time that you do get and to maximize the track time that you get. There’s gonna be a lot to learn. When you get started with a new product, I mean, it’s new from top to bottom. Everything about it is new — the parts, the pieces, even driving it. It’s got rack-and-pinion steering instead of power-steering. It’s got five gears instead of four gears. It’s not an h-pattern shifter, it’s a sequential shifter, so all those things are very different, so getting on track, practicing, going through a laundry list of ideas and setup changes and all those things to try and hit on something because out of the gate somebody is gonna hit on something and they will be the dominant team, and then everybody else will play catch-up. You want to be the team that hits it first.”

WHAT DID THE WIN AT LOUDON DO AS FAR AS CONVERSATIONS WITH STEWART-HAAS AND SMITHFIELD ABOUT NEXT YEAR? “Those talks have been ongoing. That happens every year regardless, so obviously winning makes things better — always. It makes the morale at the shop better, the team better and it boosts momentum going into the playoffs and all those things. So, it certainly helps, but we’re going on 10 years of a wonderful relationship with them. I look forward to continuing that for many more years. Winning always helps.”

IS IT YOUR EXPECTATION YOU’LL BE BACK WITH SHR NEXT YEAR? “Yeah, I’ve had a multi-year contract for a while now, so we don’t disclose all the contract terms to all of you guys because all you’d do is ask every year anyway.”

DID YOUR WIN AT LOUDON PUT ANY MORE PRESSURE ON THE 4 GOING FORWARD? “I have no idea. You would have to ask Kevin Harvick that question, not me. I’m sure they have a lot of confidence that they will make it into the playoffs. They’re a great race team and I’m sure they’ll be fast at some of these races coming up. He’s dominated Michigan the last several years. I’m sure they’ll be fast at Daytona. I have no doubt that they’re thinking about it. If I was in their situation I would certainly at least be thinking about it or be aware, but I believe they have confidence in their team and certainly in our organization that they’ll be able to get the job done and go make the playoffs.”

ARE THERE CERTAIN THINGS YOUR TEAM IS LOOKING AT IMPROVING FOR THE PLAYOFFS? “We’ve been focusing on improving at a rapid pace just to try and turn our season around, and I think we’ve done that, certainly in the last month to month-and-a-half. I’m looking forward to the playoffs. I feel like we are starting to peak at the right time, which is important in sports in general. I watched my Tampa Bay Buccaneers peak at the right time and go on to win a Super Bowl, and winning as the lowest seed there, so that’s what it’s really about and I feel like we’re getting there. We’re getting our race cars better and better. We’re figuring out some things about our race cars to make them better and faster and that’s what it’s gonna take. You can’t take slow race cars into the playoffs and go win a championship, and I feel like we’re doing a really good job of getting the most out of our race cars now and we’re continuing to build on that. So, looking forward to doing that — to close out the regular season and then as we go into the playoffs, and as we go into the playoffs it’s really gonna be about execution. You can’t have pit road speeding penalties. You can’t have loose wheels. You can’t have slow pit stops. The driver’s got to do his job on restarts and getting the most out of the race car, so it’s a total team effort and we’ve got to execute on every facet of the race.”
