NASCAR Top-10 Power Rankings: Talladega

Note: The quotes in this article are fictional.

1. Denny Hamlin: Hamlin was penalized twice for speeding on pit lane, and later suffered damage in a late crash. He finished 32nd, three laps down.

“I got caught speeding while serving the penalty for my first speeding infraction,” Hamlin said. “NASCAR officials told me, ‘Better luck next time.’

“Bubba Wallace will be the center of a Netflix series that chronicles his season with newly-formed 23XI Racing. If you’d like to know more, do a Google search for ‘NASCAR streaming’ and kindly ignore the results that explain how drivers relieve themselves in their cars.”

2. Brad Keselowski: Keselowski survived at Talladega and used a last-lap pass to win the Geico 500, his sixth Talladega triumph.

“Roger Penske met with his Penske Racing drivers earlier this week,” Keselowski said, “and he told us that a replay of our last lap crash at Daytona in February would be unacceptable. His words really stuck with me. You could say the words of the man who built the Penske trucking empire really ‘moved’ me.”

3. Martin Truex Jr.: Truex suffered damage when a Brad Keselowski block sent Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin into the wall and into the path of Truex. Truex eventually finished 31st, two laps down.

“It was good to see fans in the Talladega infield,” Truex said, “and it’s also good to see them partying hard and consuming alcohol at a rate that would make a liver blush. You could say they’re ‘BAC.'”

4. Joey Logano: Logano crashed out at Talladega with a lap to go in Stage 1. Logano finished 39th.

“My No. 22 Ford went airborne after I made contact with Denny Hamlin,” Logano said. “As Denny’s primary sponsor is FedEx, that’s called getting ‘air mailed.’

“Congratulations to my teammate Brad Keselowski for his win, and congratulations to Jeb Burton for winning the Xfinity race on Saturday. That was his first Xfinity win. Jeb is the son of Jeff Burton, and the nephew of ‘Wadd Button.'”

5. William Byron: Byron survived a late Stage 2 accident that collected three Hendrick Motorsports cars and rebounded to take the runner-up finish at Talladega.

“Talladega is always a battle of attrition,” Byron said. “It’s all about survival and making educated decisions that are beneficial despite all the chaos going on around you. And on that note, it’s a good time to reiterate that NASCAR will not mandate that drivers get the COVID vaccination. It makes sense, because there’s no way NASCAR will inspect their drivers as strictly as they do their cars.”

6. Kevin Harvick: Harvick led 12 laps and finished fourth in the Geico 500.

“My No. 4 Ford advertised a product called ‘Dog Brew By Busch,'” Harvick said. “Just to be clear, this product does not contain alcohol. That means dogs won’t get drunk when they drink it, and humans will be very drunk when they inevitably drink it.”

7. Christopher Bell: Bell finished 17th at Talladega.

“Hip-hop duo Tag Team served as the race’s grand marshals,” Bell said. “They’re famous for the song ‘Whoomp! (There It Is).’ I think it was awesome that NASCAR tabbed Tag Team to give the ‘Start Your Engines’ command. It was a bold selection. Could it have been bolder? Only if NASCAR had chosen Tag Team to deliver the convocation.”

8. Ryan Blaney: Blaney was a factor on the final lap at Talladega and finished ninth as Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski took the win.

“If you’re leading the next-to-last lap at Talladega,” Blaney said, “you’re what we call a ‘sitting duck.’ To quote Matt DiBenedetto, who led that penultimate lap, ‘Quack.'”

9. Chase Elliott: Elliott finished 24th at Talladega.

“I’m very disappointed,” Chase Elliott said. “For finishing 24th, for sure, but mostly for finishing 18 spots behind a driver named Kaz Grala, who may or may not be an Israeli self-defense discipline.”

10. Kyle Larson: Larson blew an engine only seven laps in at Talladega and finished last.

“My car overheated almost immediately,” Larson said, “so I completed only three laps. That’s totally unacceptable. And I was pissed. As I was pulling my No. 5 Chevrolet into the garage, I thought, ‘The car and I both are ‘coming in hot.'”

Drew Dawson looking to continue early-season success as South Boston Speedway heads into season’s first night race on Saturday

South Boston, VA…..Drew Dawson’s third year in the Limited Sportsman Division is on the way to being his best.

The Nathalie, Virginia resident enters the twin 25-lap Limited Sportsman Division races that will be part of the SoBo Livestreaming Night at the Races Presented by SoBoSpeedway.tv racing program on Saturday night, May 1 tied with Daniel Moss of Danville, Virginia for lead in the division point standings.

Dawson scored his first career Limited Sportsman Division win in a 50-lap race at South Boston Speedway on April 17.

“This win means a whole lot to me,” Dawson said.

“Words can’t explain how much this win means to me. I can’t thank my sponsors enough. I especially thank my dad. He puts a whole lot of work into this car to get it to where it is.”

The 2021 season has revealed much in the way of how Dawson has improved the performance of both his car and his driving. He has a win and three Top-Five finishes in his three starts this season – his best-ever start to a season.

“It’s getting there,” Dawson said of his continuous improvement.

“Seat time means a whole lot. Every lap I feel like I’m getting better and better. I’m learning on every lap. Every lap is different. You’ve got to run the same line. You’ve got to hit your same marks. If not, the car will want to slide or push in the turns, and you won’t be as fast.”

Learning the car is also playing an important role for Dawson in his improvement.

“Working on the car and working with the car helps a whole lot,” Dawson pointed out.

“It’s about learning changing adjustments on the shocks and learning where we can pick up speed. The car feels really good. It’s on a rail right now. If it will stay like that, I feel like we can pick up more wins this year.”

Kaulig Racing Announces 2021 Darlington Throwback Schemes for Jeb Burton and Justin Haley

LEXINGTON, N.C. (April 26, 2021) – It’s a year of firsts for Kaulig Racing, as the team announces two of its paint schemes for the 2021 Throwback Weekend at Darlington Raceway.

Jeb Burton’s No. 10 Nutrien Ag Solutions Chevrolet will honor his father’s (Ward Burton) first-ever NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) win. The NASCAR Legend earned his first win at Rockingham Speedway in 1995 for the AC Delco 400.

“It’s pretty cool to be able to honor my dad’s 1995 MBNA scheme from his first, Cup Series win at Rockingham for our Darlington throwback scheme,” said Burton. “Dad and my uncle (Jeff Burton) have had a lot of success at Darlington, so it’s a special track for our family. I’ve only raced there once in the Cup Series about six years ago, so I am excited to get back there. It’s a great looking car, and I appreciate Nutrien Ag Solutions for allowing it to happen. Hopefully it will be a good weekend for our team.”

Justin Haley will pilot the No. 11 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Chevrolet that will garner a special scheme paying tribute to LeafFilter’s first-ever NCS race as a primary partner. The award-winning company started by Matt Kaulig made its NCS debut for Go Fas Racing in 2014 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“I’m pumped to be able to race this scheme at Darlington this year! I started LeafFilter from the basement of my house, and then was able to be the primary partner of a NASCAR Cup Series car in 2014. Now, 7 years later, LeafFilter has won three races with Justin Haley and as a company has grown beyond my wildest dreams across the United States and Canada, so it’s amazing to see how far we have come in a few short years. I know Justin (Haley) will make us proud.”

The Steakhouse Elite 200 will take place on Saturday, May 8 at 1PM ET with coverage on FS1.

CarParts.com Partners with 2021 Daytona 500 Champion Michael McDowell for National Ad Campaign

Adds Kansas Speedway to Primary Race Schedule

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (April 26, 2021) – Today, CarParts.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: PRTS) (“CarParts.com”) announced the launch of a national ad campaign featuring Daytona 500 champion Michael McDowell. Continuing its mission to simplify the auto parts shopping experience and help drivers get back on the road, CarParts.com aims to connect with consumers through inspirational and entertaining content, leaning into McDowell’s story of perseverance as well as his quirky personality. Campaign elements will run on national television, digital and social platforms throughout the year.

“I’ve never dreamed of being in a national commercial,” said McDowell. “I’ve worked so hard in my life and career just to keep racing in the NASCAR Cup Series, and to have CarParts.com recognize that hard work and overcoming the adversity to win, it’s humbling. In racing, you are serious when you are at the track, so this gave me a chance just to relax and have fun with CarParts.com. That made for a great experience and I think everyone will laugh—if you’re a NASCAR fan or not.”

This will mark the growing eCommerce company’s third national ad campaign—first with McDowell—since entering television in 2020 as part of its turnaround journey and rapid growth trajectory that started two years ago.

“Having been a part of the Front Row Motorsports family for the past year, we couldn’t be more proud to support Michael McDowell, his accomplishments and determination,” said Houman Akhavan, Chief Marketing Officer at CarParts.com. “Having launched our rebrand with Michael last year at Martinsville, the ad campaign was a natural extension of the partnership. He’s an inspiration for many to not give up on their goals and dreams. We’re honored to not only share his story, but to also hopefully bring a laugh or two to drivers across the country through comedic commercial content.”

To celebrate the launch, CarParts.com has also signed on to be a primary partner of the No. 34 Ford Mustang at Kansas Speedway this Sunday, May 2, where McDowell will race with the new paint scheme seen in the ad campaign. In addition to Kansas Speedway, CarParts.com will hit the track with McDowell for his return to Daytona this August along with three additional races this season.

KESELOWSKI ONCE AGAIN FINDS VICTORY LANE AT TALLADEGA

Photo courtesy of NASCAR Media & Getty Images

TALLADEGA, AL – April 26, 2021 – Brad Keselowski found victory lane at Talladega Superspeedway, marking his first NASCAR Cup Series win of the season and 35th of his career. This was Keselowski’s sixth overall win at Talladega, following up his last win from 2017.

“Congratulations to Brad, Jeremy, Roger and the No. 2 crew,” said Doug Yates, President and CEO of Roush Yates Engines. “We really enjoy racing at the superspeedways and today was no exception. The Ford Performance teams worked well together throughout the race, and we are blessed to be part of the Ford Family, providing the horsepower for these fast Ford Mustangs.”

In Talladega fashion, it was anyone’s race to win in over-time, but the Ford Mustangs controlled the first three rows coming to the two-lap restart. On the last lap, the leader of the race and Stage 1 winner Matt DiBenedetto went to block a hard charging outside lane, leaving the No. 2 of Keselowski open air on the inside. Keselowski jumped on the opportunity to drive his Ford Mustang to the front and lead the last and most important lap of the race to take the checkered flag at Talladega. This marked Ford’s 31st win at the superspeedway, which includes 11 of the last 14 races.

“Merry Christmas,” commented Keselowski when asked about the last lap of the race. “What an awesome day today to bring the MoneyLion Ford Mustang into Victory Lane. The whole race I had a couple opportunities to take the lead, but I just kept thinking, ‘Man, keep your car in one piece.’ We’ve been so close here and it just didn’t seem to want to come together here the last few years and I’ve been on kind of a four-year drought here, but it’s nice to get number six.”

Six fast Ford Mustangs finished in the top-10 at Talladega, including winner Keselowski, Michael McDowell P3, Kevin Harvick P4, Matt DiBenedetto P5, Ryan Blaney P9, Cole Custer rounded out the top-10 with a tenth-place finish.

In addition, the Ford Mustangs were running strong in the NASCAR Xfinity race on Saturday when the race was called for rain. The Xfinity driver points leader, Austin Cindric led 24 of the 90-lap race and finished P2, while Ford Performance teammates Riley Herbst and Ryan Sieg finished P4 and P5 respectively.

The NASCAR Cup Series is headed to Kansas Speedway for the Buschy McBusch Race 400.

In addition, the FIM Track Inspector, Maurizio Micheluz, will also be pitting from underneath the Borilli team’s awning in 2021.

This partnership is really helping us build a solid commercial network that will represent the Borilli brand in Europe. Competence, research, passion and hard work have always been the driving force of Borilli Racing. Today, more than ever, this renewed focus here in Europe, as title sponsor of EnduroGP, makes me look forward with great enthusiasm and determination to become the tyre brand of reference for European enduro fans”

Dyson Stuns During Trans Am Race in Unpredictable Weather at Sonoma Raceway

Gregg, Mayer and Crocker take class wins in challenging conditions

SONOMA, CALIF. (25 April 2021)- Chris Dyson left fans stunned on Sunday during the Trans Am Series Presented by Pirelli West Coast race at Sonoma Raceway after the New York native drove from the back to the front of the 29-car field twice to claim his first West Coast victory. Three different class cars led during the 100-mile race, but it was Dyson in the 850-horsepower TA car who claimed the checkered. (Video Clip)

As the drivers took the start command, high winds and hard rain started to fall. Race control called for two reconnaissance laps instead of the typical single circuit for drivers to examine the changing track conditions. After the first lap, pole-sitter Dyson pulled into the pits to switch from Pirelli slicks to wets, forfeiting his first-place start.

Dyson took the green in last place and managed to work his way through the field to eighth before the first full course caution emerged about 10 minutes into the race. With the rain fading, Dyson returned to the pits for another tire switch, returning in 19th place.

Another full course yellow mid-way through the race allowed Dyson to play catch up. With his Pirelli slicks getting up to temperature, Dyson’s average speed was about five seconds a lap faster than the leader’s, which allowed him to advance three positions in each lap until he took the overall lead on Lap 25 from XGT driver Simon Gregg.

CD Racing finished one-two overall as its National series TA driver Humaid Masaood finished second overall and second in class after starting eighth in the No. 21 Amamos LaVida Tequilla Ford Mustang.

“What a special day,” Dyson said. “Sonoma has always meant a lot to me. My dad won one of his biggest IMSA races here in 1986. I grew up watching the race broadcast and even memorized the commentary. I always come out here with a little spring in my step. I fell in love with the place the first time I drove here, and this is my first time out here in the Trans Am car. To come out here and win in honor of the Pickett family is such a special day for us.”

Dyson represented West Coast Trans Am Champion Greg Pickett in a collaboration with Pickett’s newest business venture Altwell CBD, giving Dyson’s No. 20 Ford Mustang a makeover from his traditional red and white Plaid livery to a yellow and white scheme for his West Coast tour. Dyson broke Pickett’s Sonoma Trans Am lap record during qualifying on Saturday, beating the standing time by more than two seconds.

Pickett met Dyson in the winners’ circle to celebrate the victory.

“Chris and I go way back, we’ve been competitors for a number of years and I spent a bit of time racing his father (Rob Dyson) in prototypes,” Gregg explained. “He’s been a dear friend of mine for a lot of years. I respect him as a person, a competitor and a father, and if anyone was to break my track record here at Sonoma, I am glad it was a Dyson.”

Gregg finished third overall in the No. 59 The Peter Gregg Foundation Mercedez Benz AMG, and first in the XGT class. Gregg lost the lead on the opening lap to TA2 driver Sam Mayer before repaying the favor the following lap. The reigning West Coast XGT champion controlled the race until Dyson made a pass on his outside in Turn 1 on Lap 25 and then dropped to third after Dyson’s teammate Masaood edged himself into second 10 laps later.

Gregg will trade in his XGT Mercedes AMG for his Chevrolet Camaro next weekend at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca to earn points for his National TA championship bid.

“It felt great to get back into the Mercedes, I haven’t done an XGT race in awhile,” Gregg said. “It was a lot of fun dicing it up with the different classes and I even got to lead a bit. The car handles really well in the rain since it has good electronics. I am so happy to have finished on the podium today.”

XGT driver Erich Joiner was the only other driver to change tires before taking a green after his No. 10 Good Boy Bob Coffee Roaster Porsche 991 GT3 R did a pirouette through standing water on the out lap. Joiner later pitted for slicks and returned to the race to take second in class and 22nd overall.

TeamSLR dominated the huge TA2® class at Sonoma with young aces Mayer and Connor Mosack. Trans Am ProAm Challenge driver Mayer finished first in class and fourth overall in the No. 8 M1-SLR/Fields Chevrolet Camaro. Mayer gained the lead early but started to fade late in the race after his power steering failed. Mayer muscled through the mechanical issues and as soon as he took the checkered his car started to smoke and required a tow to victory circle. The class victory marked Mayer’s second win of the season.

“The XGT and the TA2® cars were pretty even here today at Sonoma, so it was a lot of fun to race with them,” said Mayer. “For our race in general it was pretty hectic because the weather went from one side of the rainbow to the other. I wish the rain would have stayed a little more because on those slick tires and the elevation changes it made the race really fun. Overall it was super fun and I really fell in love this track.”

Mosack started from the second row in fourth in the No. 28 NicTailor/IFS M1-SLR/Fields Chevrolet Camaro. The TA2® rookie crossed the line fifth overall and second in class.

The 2020 SGT champion Carl Rydquist debuted this weekend in TA2®. It was a promising weekend, as he finished third in class and sixth overall in his opening weekend behind the wheel of the No. 47 Racecars4Rent/GroupWholesale Ford Mustang.

The wet conditions initially favored the Porsches, as SGT class pole winner Rob Crocker in the No. 77 KRYPTAURI Cybersecurity Porsche Cayman led the class early before managing a mechanical issue throughout the 45-lap race. Missing fourth gear and even pulling into the pits briefly after losing power, Crocker still managed to wheel the Porsche Cayman to the finish line, passing his teammate Gene Sigal for first in class and 16th overall.

Sigal in the No. 7 Sigal Sport Porsche Cayman Clubsport finished second in his Trans Am SGT debut, giving Sigal Sport Racing a one-two class finish.

In his second race with Trans Am, John Schweitzer completed the SGT podium in the No. 00 Superior Builders Inc Holden Commodore, which was built in Australia in 2000 by Chevrolet to show off the LS1 and shipped to the United States before Schewitzer took possession of the unique car.

“I had to skip from third to fifth gear most of the race,” said Crocker. “It was tricky but we made it last to finish our first race strong and take an early points lead in the championship.”

The Trans Am West Coast drivers will have a quick turnaround as they travel down the Golden Coast to join the National Trans Am drivers for the Trans Am Speed Fest at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca April 30-May 2. The race will be live streamed exclusively on the Trans Am by Pirelli Racing App.

Team Penske NASCAR Cup Series Race Report – Talladega

Team Penske NASCAR Cup Series Race Report
Track: Talladega Superspeedway
Race: GEICO 500
Date: April 25, 2021

No. 2 MoneyLion Ford Mustang – Brad Keselowski

Start: 10th
Stage 1: 19th
Stage 2: 2nd
Finish: 1st – First victory of 2021 season
Status: Running
Laps Completed: 191/191
Laps Led: 1
Point Standings (behind first): 6th (-128)

Notes:

  • Brad Keselowski took the lead on the final lap to earn an overtime win in the GEICO 500 Sunday afternoon at Talladega Superspeedway. The victory marked the first of the 2021 season for Keselowski and his sixth triumph at the 2.66-mile Alabama superspeedway. Keselowski tied both Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon for the most wins at the track with his 35th career Cup Series victory and he has now won at least one NASCAR Cup Series race in each of the past 10 seasons. Keselowski gained three positions in the NASCAR Cup Series driver standings with Sunday’s finish, as he is now ranked sixth, 128 points behind leader Denny Hamlin.
  • Keselowski started 10th and surged back and forth in the lead draft throughout the opening stage of the race. The driver of the MoneyLion Ford Mustang narrowly avoided disaster late in the opening segment when teammate Joey Logano and Hamlin made contact on the backstretch as the opening segment drew to a close on lap 60. The No. 2 Mustang received only minor damage in the incident. Keselowski pitted three times during the stage caution for minor repairs and restarted 32nd when the race restarted on lap 66.
  • In Stage 2, Keselowski rallied back into contention. He worked his way up to ninth position by lap 83 and a well-executed green flag pit stop for fuel only by the No. 2 Crew on lap 92 kept their driver near the front of the lead draft. A caution on lap 105 set up an 11-lap dash to the finish of the segment. Keselowski restarted third and was just ahead of a multi-car accident triggered by Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. that forced the stage to end under the yellow flag on lap 120. He was credited with a second-place finish and after a round of pit stops and restarted in sixth place when the race returned to the green flag on lap 126.
  • Keselowski made one final surge to the front late in the race, which put him in position to win. He pitted on lap 173 for four tires and restarted 11th when the race went green three laps later. Keselowski steadily worked his way through traffic and the MoneyLion Ford was up to fifth place by lap 178. He ran in the third position on lap 185 when the seventh and final caution flag of the race flew on lap 186, which forced NASCAR overtime. The green flag waved on lap 189 and two laps later Keselowski was able to get past Matt DiBenedetto for the lead and he held on for the win.

Quote: “What an awesome day today to bring the MoneyLion Ford Mustang into victory lane. The whole race I had a couple opportunities to take the lead, but I just kept thinking, ‘Man, keep your car in one piece.’ We’ve been so close here and it just didn’t seem to want to come together here the last few years and I’ve been on kind of a four-year drought here, but it’s nice to get number six. I would have never dreamed I’d tie Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. here. That’s something. Those guys are really legends. I’m just really proud of my team.”

No. 12 Menards/Sylvania Ford Mustang – Ryan Blaney

Start: 7th
Stage 1: 2nd
Stage 2: 6th
Finish: 9th
Status: Running
Laps Completed: 191/191
Laps Led: 11
Point Standings (behind first): 5th (-100)

Notes:

  • Driving the No. 12 Menards/Sylvania Ford Mustang, Ryan Blaney started seventh, led 11 laps and finished ninth in Sunday afternoon’s Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. The finish marked Blaney’s fifth top-10 career result at the Alabama Superspeedway. Blaney and the No. 12 Ford team are now ranked fifth in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings, 100 markers behind leader Denny Hamlin.
  • During the opening run on Sunday, Blaney fell outside the top 10 before the competition caution flag flew on lap 25. Scored in the 11th position, Blaney reported the No. 12 Menards/Sylvania Mustang ran just a little free in the draft. The adjustments on the first stop helped the handling of the No. 12 Mustang and Blaney raced his way to the second position to finish out Stage One. On the stage-ending pit stop, crew chief Todd Gordon elected to keep the previous air pressure adjustment on the No. 12 Ford and take four fresh tires and fuel. Unfortunately, Blaney ran low on fuel while coming onto pit road, which resulted in lost track position.
  • Blaney restarted the second stage in 22nd place and raced his way to eighth before making a green flag stop on lap 92 for fuel and right-side tires. Blaney moved back up into the second position, but got shuffled to sixth before a caution flag ended the second stage prematurely. Blaney told his crew the Menards/Sylvania Mustang was running well and the team elected to pit at the stage caution for right-side tires and fuel, as the No. 12 Mustang won the race off pit road.
  • Blaney began the final stage as the race leader, but surrendered the top position to fellow Ford racer Aric Almirola to remove debris off the grill of his car. After making a green flag stop, Blaney was scored in 19th place, trailing behind the lead draft. The caution flag was displayed with 17 laps to go, which allowed Blaney to catch the lead draft and remain on track under caution.
  • The High Point N.C. native restarted the race in eighth place with 12 laps remaining. Working with his Ford teammates, Blaney raced his way to the second position before the seventh caution period of the day with four laps remaining, which set up NASCAR overtime. As the field jockeyed for position over the final overtime laps, Blaney was shuffled back and ultimately finished in ninth place.

Quote: “Overall, not a bad day. I really would have liked to not see a caution at the end of that thing with Matt, Brad and I all lined up there. It would have been nice to see where we all wound up, but the top on green-white-checkers I never think is any good because the bottom always wins out on that because the bottom lane they can’t go anywhere. They can’t move up, and then guys that are in the second lane they just bail to the top because guys in the back are trying to get all the spots you can, so that just kind of makes the top fall apart. It just kind of fell apart on us and then couldn’t get any help from behind, but, overall, nice to still be rolling at the end of that thing and not a bad finish, not a bad day.”

No. 22 Autotrader Ford Mustang – Joey Logano

Start: 2nd
Stage 1: 39th
Stage 2: 39th
Finish: 39th
Status: Accident
Laps Completed: 59/188
Laps Led: 10
Point Standings (behind first): 3rd (-93)

  • Joey Logano started second in Sunday’s Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, but finished 39th after a lap 59 accident ended the day for the No. 22 Autotrader Ford Mustang. Logano car was turned by another competitor entering turn 3 as the field was racing for the conclusion of the first stage.
  • Logano led laps early in the No. 22 Autotrader Ford Mustang, despite reporting a loose-handling condition, and was running third at the competition caution on lap 25. Logano was battling for the Stage 1 victory when his car suffered contact on corner entry to Turn 3 and went airborne before coming to rest on the wheels of the Autotrader Mustang.
  • Logano was uninjured in the accident, but he unable to finish the race as the No. 22 Autotrader Ford was scored in the 39th position.

Quote: “I am appreciative of driving a car that is this safe and what Team Penske has done for the safety of these cars so that I can live to talk about it and go again. I got lucky that I didn’t get hit while I was in the air. It is unfortunate for our Autotrader Mustang but we will go on but it won’t be a good starting spot next week.”

Buescher Finishes 21st After Turning in Strong Performance Early at Talladega

LINCOLN, Ala. (April 25, 2021) – Chris Buescher and the No. 17 Fastenal team turned in a strong performance in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series event at Talladega Superspeedway, running the majority of the race inside the field’s top 10. Buescher powered his Ford to as far up as second position during the 500-mile event, picked up stage points in each of the first two segments and was poised for a strong finish before being shuffled into the outside retaining wall in the races’ final lap, resulting in the 21st-place finish.

“The finish there was a tough one,” said Buescher. “It’s hard because our Fastenal team did a great job, and we were up front and in position the whole day. It looked like we were going to be able to make a strong run at the end, but those are the types of things that happen at Talladega. Still, I’m proud of this No. 17 team and the effort we put in today and we’ll regroup and go back after it next week.”

Buescher started the race 21st and wasted little time working his Fastenal machine to the front, advancing to the seventh position by the race’s fourth lap and finishing the first segment in sixth place, picking up early stage points.

The team overcame a pit road speeding penalty and slight damage to the front of the No. 17 Ford during the second stage, battled back inside the top 10 and finished the segment in eighth.

Having run the majority of the final stage inside the top 10, Buescher restarted in sixth position with three laps to go in the race, and was driving to a strong finish before the contact with another car sent him into the unforgiving wall and the 21st-place finish.

Buescher and the No. 17 team return to action next weekend at Kansas Speedway. Race coverage is set for 3 p.m. ET on FS1 and MRN, and coverage can also be heard on SiriusXM Channel 90.
