Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup Season Hits Crescendo at Road Atlanta with Fletcher Race Win

BRASELTON, Ga (Oct. 9, 2025) – Round 13 of the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by Michelin played out like a blockbuster movie at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on Thursday.

The top three drivers vying for the championship found themselves running together in the closing laps of the race knowing that every press of the throttle and touch of the steering wheel would have consequences.

And on final lap of the race, the consequences were dire for two of the three challengers: Jeremy Fletcher (No. 22 McCumbee McAleer Racing) took the win, while Tyler Gonzalez (No. 57 BSI Racing) finished in the wall at Turn Nine and Nathan Nicholson (No. 56 Advanced Autosports) was issued a penalty for the incident.

A chaotic qualifying with limited green flag time and lots of penalties created an unusual grid for the race. McCumbee McAleer Racing locked out the front two rows, led by Nate Cicero (No. 83 McCumbee McAleer Racing) on pole. Fletcher started fourth, but Gonzalez started 12th, and Nicholson was all the way back in 24th.

An early race restart from yellow eradicated any cushion Fletcher thought he might have to his competitors, who used the opportunity to make up positions quickly. By lap 10, the championship contenders were all in the same frame as Gonzalez led, Fletcher was third and Nicholson was seventh.

Fletcher may have been content to circulate in third with Gonzalez in his sights, but when Nicholson took that final podium spot from him, Fletcher knew it was time to charge. After a long battle with rookie Marcello Paniccia (No. 19 Saito Motorsports Group) Fletcher was into second and then around Gonzalez and into the lead.

There was a chance, however, that his race might be over before the checkered flag, since Paniccia spun from possible contact with Fletcher, which would earn him a penalty. Fletcher was confident he didn’t touch the rookie and race control agreed.

“With that incident, I fully knew that I couldn’t have physically done anything there,” Fletcher recalled. “I was pretty confident that would be that call.”

Like it was written for a movie, the top three in the championship were nose-to-tail as the time ticked away and the white flag came out. Coming into Turn 10, the trio fanned out. There was contact heading into the downhill braking zone. Gonzalez turned sideways and hit the wall while Fletcher and Nicholson continued.

Race control deemed Nicholson at fault for the incident and issued him a 99-second penalty after the checkered flag, bumping him to 25th in the official results, one spot ahead of Gonzalez.

The disparity in points earned in the race makes Fletcher the near de-facto season champion. He wasn’t just happy as he climbed out of his car, he was relieved.

“It was pretty calm to start with because I had my three teammates that I qualified up front with,” Fletcher said. “I thought we were going to drive away. Unfortunately, Tyler [Gonzalez] came and spoiled the show. He had incredible pace. Of course, he’s going to make his way through the pack as well as Nathan [Nicholson]. They both drove through the field and got up to the front where they needed to be. When you look in the mirror and the guys racing you for the championship are sitting right behind you and right in front of you, at that time, it’s stressful.

“The last two laps were pretty chaotic, and I would have been okay sitting in third at the end, but some fortunate events happened, and we came out on top for the third race in-a-row.

“The McCumbee McAleer boys have done such an amazing job all year. Dalton Dow on my car and Kevin Stelly, they work day in and day out to give me a fast car, and I just kind of have to turn the wheel and hit the gas sometimes.”

On nobody’s bingo card, was rookie Ethan Jacobs (No. 99 Advanced Autosports) quietly stalking his way to a podium finish. He was in the catbird seat when the championship contenders got together in Turn Nine and placed himself perfectly to almost take the lead, but ultimately finishing second.

“I was just hanging on to the back of that front pack, and it was in the back of my mind that I could maybe catch them on that last lap,” Jacobs said. “I knew they were going to make some dicey moves, and they did going into Turn 10. There was a little bit of contact and I was able to dive on the outside and come out two-wide and across the line for a second.”

Jacobs ran a limited season to keep himself eligible for the Mazda MX-5 Cup Shootout, which awards a $150,000 scholarship to compete in MX-5 Cup. He hopes the judges at the shootout take note of his performance and that he gets the chance to come back for a full season in 2026.

“I came to this race just hoping to impress the folks at Mazda and the people with Advanced Autosports,” Jacobs said. “I’m just trying to put together an effort for next season and I’m putting all my efforts toward the Shootout this year. This is the MX-5 Cup race weekend before I lose my rookie status, so I’m able to go to the Shootout and hopefully compete for a win there.”

Gresham Wagner was sure he wouldn’t be racing at Road Atlanta until the night before track sessions commenced but found himself in the final podium spot once penalties were applied.

“I have to thank, MMR a lot for giving me a call on Tuesday to come down here,” Wagner said. “I wasn’t expecting to race, and I had kind of accepted that, but then I got the next flight available, flew down here and jumped in the car, which is Stuart McAleer’s spare MX-5 that he has. The team put in double the effort than normal to get that all prepped and to sort out everything to make it logistically possible for me to get here and race.”

As much as he wanted to help his teammate win a championship, Wagner was equally set on adding more wins to his impressive career stats. More than anything, he was just happy to have the opportunity to race with his team.

“I have my own records and my own ambitions and everything to win another race, but at the same time, I’m not going to take something away from Jeremy [Fletcher] to benefit myself. If the opportunity presents itself, I’d love to finish off the weekend with a win, but obviously, I’m giving Jeremy some of the same benefits that he gave me you know, through our tenure as teammates.”

At the time of writing, Fletcher is the provisional point leader with 3,530 points. Nicholson has 3,190 and Gonzalez 3,090.

Two-time MX-5 Cup Champion Jared Thomas (No. 96 JTR Motorsports Engineering) not only finished fourth but earned the Penske Shocking Performance Award for coming from last on the grid to fourth at the finish. Thomas had an accident in qualifying and needed to move to a backup car, which by the rulebook meant he had to start last.

Cicero, the polesitter, finish fifth, putting three MMR cars in the top five and bolstering their hunt for a team championship.

Sally Mott (No. 15 JTR Motorsports Engineering) was the highest finishing female driver in the race. A 13th-place finish earned her $2,000.

Back behind the wheel for the first time since Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in May, Woody Heimann (No. 82 JTR Motorsports Engineering) claimed his second-ever Takumi Award for drivers over the age of 40. Heimann finished 16th and that completed a JTR Motorsports Engineering sweep of the special race awards.

Only one race remains in the 2025 regular season and it is slated for 9:35am ET on Friday. A livestream is available on the IMSA and RACER YouTube channels.

PRO STOCK’S GREG ANDERSON EYES MORE DALLAS SUCCESS AT TEXAS NHRA FALLNATIONALS

ENNIS, Texas (Oct. 9, 2025) – Reigning Pro Stock world champion Greg Anderson earned another win two weeks ago in St. Louis and as the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series heads to Dallas for the 40th annual Texas NHRA FallNationals at the famed Texas Motorplex to close out the Stampede of Speed, he has his eye on another Dallas win and, potentially, another world title.

Anderson, the winningest Pro Stock driver in NHRA history, has 112 event wins to his credit, including most recently at World Wide Technology Raceway when he won the third race of the Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

Anderson and his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro team have won six races so far in 2025. With his sights set on a seventh championship, he is ready to return to Texas Motorplex in search of his seventh NHRA FallNationals title.

“Going to Dallas for me every year, just on its own is a confidence boost,” said Anderson. “I love racing there. I love everything about the week, everything about it is great. I have a blast there and I’ve won there a lot, and I would love to have my name on the bricks down there. It’s just a cool place for me.

“I think if you look back at history, you’ll probably find a whole lot of times the winner of that race ends up being a world champion. I don’t think that’s a coincidence. It’s a tough place to win and the cream has to rise to the top there, so I love racing at Dallas.”

In 2024, Justin Ashley (Top Fuel), Matt Hagan (Funny Car), Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock) and Gaige Herrera (Pro Stock Motorcycle) all won the Wally and the coveted Texas Motorplex cowboy hat. For this year’s race, the winners will receive a special, one-time only navy cowboy hat to commemorate the special 40th anniversary of the event.

The event will be broadcast on FS1 and FOX, with eliminations taking place on FOX on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 2 or 4:30 p.m. ET, depending on local listings.

The race, the 18th of 20 this year, starts with a bang with two qualifying rounds on Friday and the highly-anticipated “JEGS Friday Night Live,” featuring the popular “Battle for the Saddle.” It puts more than $40,000 in bonus money on the line for drivers in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle. The low qualifier under the lights on Friday night will net Top Fuel and Funny Car stars $15,000 each in bonus money, with $7,500 going to the quickest qualifier in Pro Stock and $5,000 in Pro Stock Motorcycle.

As part of the Friday night festivities, fans are encouraged to wear black and yellow as part of a special “Black and Yellow Bash,” adding another thrilling aspect to “JEGS Friday Night Live” and the weekend’s 40th anniversary celebration.

Anderson, who advanced to the final round last year against Coughlin, is the winningest Pro Stock driver at the famed Texas track. Another win this weekend will tie him with John Force for the most wins in Texas Motorplex history.

Anderson is currently second in the Pro Stock points standings, behind his KB Titan Racing teammate Dallas Glenn. Glenn kicked off the Countdown to the Championship with back-to-back wins in Reading and Charlotte. Anderson closed the point gap to 25 points. The duo has won all but three events this season.

“You can see how much I’m looking forward to it and this certainly is a confidence boost, but you have to go out there and race,” Anderson said. “You have to lock horns every round. First round to final round, you have to treat every round like a final round, and you have to execute. So, there’s no telling what’s going to happen the rest of the way, but it’s starting to feel good for our camp.”

Two-time Pro Stock Motorcycle champ Herrera won his second straight NHRA FallNationals last season over the six-time champ Matt Smith. Herrera moved to second in points following his St. Louis win, trailing teammate Richard Gadson by 29 points.

Ashley will need another Top Fuel win in Dallas to remain in the title chase. He’s 86 points behind leader Doug Kalitta, who will aim to stay on top against a field that also includes Shawn Langdon, reigning champ Antron Brown, Tony Stewart and Brittany Force.

Hagan won his fifth NHRA FallNationals Funny Car event last season over Ron Capps. Reigning champ Austin Prock leads the points after winning eight races this year, but Hagan has closed the gap to 20 points following his St. Louis win. Others to watch include Jack Beckman, Daniel Wilkerson, Paul Lee and Reading winner Cruz Pedregon.

The Texas NHRA FallNationals will also feature thrilling competition in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, which includes some of the sport’s top drivers. The weekend will include the finale of the exciting Holley EFI Factory X category and the Jr. Dragster Shootout.

Fans will also be treated to the JEG’s Allstars event, which pits sportsman racers from across the country against each other for the ultimate drag racing battle, beginning on Friday, Oct. 10. The popular competition moved to the famed Texas Motorplex in 2023, the unique specialty race is back as a major highlight of the 2025 Stampede of Speed as one of most highly-anticipated sportsman events of the year.

Leading into the race weekend, fans can take part in several events as part of the massive 10-day Stampede for Speed festival. That includes the popular NHRA Fan Fest at Railyard Park in downtown Waxahachie (October 9), where fans can meet and get autographs from all the top stars in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series and the JEGS Allstars participants.

At the track, fans will be invited to the Nitro Alley Stage in the pits for Nitro School, meet and greets, music and much more. Race fans at Texas Motorplex can enjoy the special pre-race ceremonies that introduce and celebrate each of the drivers racing for the prestigious Wally on Sunday and includes the fan favorite SealMaster Track Walk. The final can’t-miss experience of any NHRA event is the winner’s circle celebration on Sunday after racing concludes, where fans can congratulate the event winners.

Fans with reserved tickets with a pit pass get access to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction. They can see their favorite teams in action and servicing their hot rods between rounds, get autographs from their favorite NHRA drivers and more. They can also visit NHRA’s Manufacturers Midway, where sponsors and race vendors create an exciting atmosphere that includes interactive displays, merchandise and food.

NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series qualifying will feature two rounds at 4:15 and 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Oct. 10, and the final two rounds of qualifying on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 12 and 2:30 p.m. Final eliminations are scheduled for 10 a.m. CT on Sunday, Oct. 12. Television coverage includes qualifying action on FS1 at 10:30 a.m. ET on Sunday, leading into eliminations on FOX at either 2 or 4:30 p.m. ET (check local listings).

Women in Motorsports North America Partners with McDowell, Gainbridge at Martinsville Speedway

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (October 9, 2025) – Women in Motorsports North America (WIMNA) will partner with Gainbridge and NASCAR Cup Series driver Michael McDowell for a special paint scheme honoring women in North American motorsports who play key roles across the sport during the Oct. 26 Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway.

From drivers to engineers and executives at the team, track, manufacturer and corporate sponsor levels, Spire Motorsports and its cornerstone partner Gainbridge will spotlight the women who keep North American motorsports moving forward.

WIMNA is a dedicated community that supports women across all disciplines of motorsport, fostering mentorship, advocacy, education and growth. The organization’s mission is to create an inclusive and resourceful environment that strengthens the sport by empowering women at every level.

“Gainbridge continues to champion the advancement and inclusion of women in motorsports by showcasing its commitment on one of American motorsports’ grandest stages,” said Cindy Sisson, Executive Director of WIMNA. “We are thrilled to celebrate the incredible women who make our industry stronger every day.”

In addition to partnering on McDowell’s car, Gainbridge will also serve as presenting sponsor of the opening reception at the Women with Drive V – Driven by Mobil 1 Summit, held Dec. 8, 2025, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. Click here for more information on the Summit.

“We are proud to partner with Spire Motorsports in highlighting all of the important work being done by WIMNA in advancing opportunities for women across motorsports.” said Mike Nichols, Chief of Sponsorship Strategy and Activation at Gainbridge.

McDowell made his first career NASCAR Cup Series start at Martinsville Speedway in March 2008 and has gone on to record 29 starts at the storied venue. He earned a career/venue-best 12th-place finish in the division’s most recent visit to the famed half-mile oval at the seventh race of the 2025 campaign.

With four races left on this season’s schedule, the 2021 Daytona 500 winner is currently 21st in the Cup Series championship point standings and owns a trio of top-five and five top-10 finishes on the year.

With well over 500 starts in NASCAR’s premier division on his resume, the Glendale, Ariz., native is one of the most respected drivers in the sport. While he’s yet to collect his first checkered flag since making the move to Spire Motorsports, McDowell earned the team’s first pole position earlier this year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

In the Cup Series most recent stop at the Bank of America ROVAL 400 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, McDowell earned a spirited fifth-place finish to record his third top-five and fifth top-10 of the season.

“I think WIMNA is such a great organization,” said McDowell. “With my three girls and my wife, Jami, they’ve supported me through everything. I wouldn’t be here without those amazing ladies and my mother. It’s so important to nurture the dreams of our kids, giving them the confidence to pursue whatever their interests draw them to. If that’s motorsports, great, and making sure they can chase that dream with all the tools they need is such an important step in the right direction for women interested in motorsports. I’m thankful for the opportunity to represent Gainbridge and WIMNA. I’m eager to see this expand further than a paint scheme. We’re ready to head to Martinsville, honor the incredible women in North American motorsports and race for the win.”

QUOTABLE

Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 5 Chevrolet, on returning to Las Vegas Motor Speedway: “We have a great history at (Las Vegas) but you can never expect to have a good result any time you go to a race. But I do feel like we’ve learned some things on our mile-and-a-half program, so I am excited to get there and see if we can match what we had at Kansas if not be a little better.”

Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet, on Las Vegas Motor Speedway: “I thought we had some pretty good runs (at Las Vegas) prior to Next Gen and then the inception of the Next Gen car, I feel like it was a pretty big step backwards. And then I thought we had a really good run there going last fall. I thought we made some nice gains last year as a whole there. Had a really, really nice run going. I was excited about just having a solid day there in the fall and crashed. And I thought this spring was solid. More in the ballpark, not as good as we were in the fall, but certainly more competitive than some of the races.”

William Byron, driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet, on the Round of 8: “The next round is the one we’ve put our focus on. It’s what determines if you race for a championship. Everyone especially is going to put a lot of focus on this weekend’s race (at Las Vegas Motor Speedway). It’s the easiest way to lock yourself in. Talladega (Superspeedway) is a bit of a crap shoot, and honestly, Martinsville (Speedway) hasn’t been our strongest in the fall. This is the opportunity we’ve been waiting for though and hopefully we’re one of the four racing for a championship in Phoenix.”

Alex Bowman, driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet, on going to Las Vegas Motor Speedway: “Vegas is always a fun stop on the schedule. We’ve had some solid runs at Vegas in the past and I’m excited to get back there. I feel like our mile-and-a-half program has continued to improve throughout this season. This No. 48 team has been putting in the work and if we execute like we know we can, we’ll hopefully have a shot to contend on Sunday.”

AUSTIN DILLON QUOTE:

Historically, you have had some good runs at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Describe racing there.

“Las Vegas Motor Speedway is a great mile-and-a-half. Our No. 3 team felt good there earlier this year and it has been a good track for us. We haven’t always gotten the finishes we deserve, but our performance has been solid. The track is rough through Turns 1 and 2, and you have to be able to cut through the bumps. Restarts are wild, too. Vegas is an awesome place to go.”

Kyle Busch and the No. 8 zone Chevrolet at Las Vegas Motor Speedway… Kyle Busch made his first NASCAR Cup Series start at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 7, 2004, and since then the Las Vegas native has gone on to achieve much success at his home track. Sunday’s 400-mile race will mark Busch’s 29th start in the premier series at the 1.5-mile oval. Busch has one win, 12 top-five, 15 top-10 finishes, an average starting position of 10.8, and an average finishing position of 12.1. Busch has completed 94 percent (7,061 of 7,514) of laps competed at the Nevada speedway.

Back Where it Started… Busch grew up approximately 20 miles from Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where the now 40-year-old graduated with honors from Durango High School in 2002. Busch began his career racing legend cars at the age of 13, winning two Legend Car championships at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and 65 Legend Car events. In a full circle moment, Busch will race his son Brexton in the second installment of Battle of the Busch’s at his home track on Nov. 8.

Pole Position… Busch is the only driver to win consecutive Cup Series poles at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, accomplishing the feat in 2008 and 2009. Also, Busch is the only driver in series history to win from the pole at the west coast facility, earning the first starting position in 2009 en route to securing the race victory that same weekend.

An Impressive Track Record… Busch owns numerous Cup Series records at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. In 2009, Busch became the youngest race winner (23 years, 9 months, and 27 days) in track history. Among active drivers, Busch owns the most top-five finishes (12) and starts (28).

Success Not Limited to the Cup Series… In addition to his Cup Series success in Sin City, Busch also has two NASCAR Xfinity Series and four NASCAR Truck Series wins at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

KYLE BUSCH QUOTES:

This is your home track. What does it mean to you that you now race here with NASCAR’s Cup Series, and what are some past highlights for you?

“I always remember sitting in the grandstands as a kid, just kind of turning around looking and being like, man, one day, you know, one day I want to race there one day. So Vegas is just a cool track. Years ago it was wider and flatter and put on some really good racing. I finished really well there early on my first few years, then they reconfigured and remade it. I won early on in 2009, I believe it was, to get my only win there. But man, I’ve been so close, I think my top three finishes is really, really high.”

For a track like Las Vegas, where restarts are so hectic and crazy, just take me through a restart here on a race weekend?

“Restarts are sort of the name of the game, I guess, now, because once you get single-filed out and spread out a little bit, it’s hard to make up time and make up ground unless you’re really, really good. And to get by guys that you’re around or in front of you, as well. So you try to get as many as you can and whatever you can. It’s kind of tough, you know, with the defense being as good as the defense can be with guys, where they pull up in front of you and block your air and things like that, where you’ve got to, you know, get out of the gas and whatnot. So it’s definitely changed over the years. This car has changed it again. But it seems like, more and more times, guys are more amped up and more — not amped up, but more ramped up to just be ready to defend and make it harder for guys to make ground as much as you used to when we first went to some of the double-file restart stuff.”

Jesse Love and the No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet at Las Vegas Motor Speedway… Jesse Love has made three career NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Most recently in the spring event, the 20-year-old showed speed and finished in the third position after qualifying seventh. Growing up in Menlo Park, California, Love attended races at the 1.5-mile oval in person throughout his life.

So Begins the Round of 8… Last weekend at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL, Love kept his Xfinity Series Championship hopes alive by racing his way into the Round of 8. While he began the race at the cutline, a Stage 2 win and 12th place finish overall propelled him to fifth in the points, keeping him in the hunt. Love will travel to Las Vegas again needing to race his way into the next stage, trailing the Championship 4 cutoff by two points.

About Whelen Engineering… Whelen Engineering is a family-owned company with a pioneering spirit and a passion to protect the lives of those who protect and serve others. Meet Love… On Saturday, October 11 at 2 p.m. Local Time, Love is scheduled to sign autographs at the RCR Merchandise Hauler in the Fan Zone at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Stop by to meet the driver of the No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet and purchase gear for race day.

JESSE LOVE QUOTE:

Starting the Round of 8 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, what is the mindset for the No. 2 team?

“I’m looking forward going back to Las Vegas. The track itself is fast and technical. We finished third there the last couple of times and I feel like we were good enough to win the race in the fall last year and the spring this year. The Whelen team has made improvements on our package in the simulator since then, and hopefully those pay off. The goal is lock ourselves into the Champ 4 before Martinsville.”

Austin Hill and the No. 21 Global Industrial Chevrolet at Las Vegas Motor Speedway… Austin Hill has made eight career NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, earning one win (spring 2023), three top-five, and six top-10 finishes. In eight NASCAR Truck Series starts at the Nevada speedway, the Winston, Georgia native has led a total of 80 laps and captured two wins (fall 2019, fall 2020), four top-five, and six top-10 results.

Did You Know? Hill is the only active driver in the Xfinity Series field who has won at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in both the Xfinity Series and Truck Series.

Top-10 Streaking… Hill has finished inside the top-10 in his last six Xfinity Series races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, accomplishing the impressive feat in 75 percent of events competed. In last year’s race, the 31-year-old took the checkered flag in the fourth position.

Owner Championship Hunt… After experiencing a mechanical issue and being eliminated from the Xfinity Series driver championship playoffs last week at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL, Hill and the No. 21 team remain in the hunt for the Xfinity Series owner championship title. With the Round of 8 beginning this Saturday, the team currently holds the third position, 11 points above the cutline.

Special Visit… On Friday afternoon, Hill will visit the Global Industrial Distribution Center in North Las Vegas, Nevada to meet and sign autographs for associates. Global Industrial has a total of five distribution centers across the continental United States, allowing the company to house multiple inventories, give customers faster deliveries, and lower shipping costs.

On Saturday, the K9s For Warriors logo will be featured on the lower rear quarter panel of Hill’s No. 21 Chevrolet.

Meet Hill… On Saturday, October 11 at 1:40 p.m. Local Time, Hill is scheduled to sign autographs at the South Point Hotel and Casino Display in the Fan Zone at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Immediately following at 2 p.m. Local Time, the veteran racer is scheduled to appear at the RCR Merchandise Hauler with RCR teammate Jesse Love. Stop by to meet Hill and purchase new No. 21 gear before the green flag waves.

AUSTIN HILL QUOTE:

With past success at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, what is the outlook for the No. 21 team this weekend?

“Las Vegas has always been a good place for me to go, even dating back to the Truck Series days. I’ve won races there on the Truck side and we’ve also been able to get a win on the Xfinity side. We always seem to be in contention when it matters. Even if we don’t win the race, we find ways to run inside the top-five. On a bad day, we run seventh or eighth. The track itself just fits my driving style. Over the years, the track has been bottom dominant, where you want to paint your left side tires on the white line, and I’ve been known to be a bottom feeder or someone who likes to catfish through the corner. Hopefully that trend continues this weekend.”

Head West and ‘Steak’ Your Claim

Rick Ware Racing Brings Arby’s Steak Nuggets to Las Vegas

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 9, 2025) – The West was settled long ago, but travelers can still “steak” their claim this weekend in Las Vegas by sampling Arby’s new Steak Nuggets at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, site of Sunday’s South Point 400 NASCAR Cup Series race.

Arby’s Steak Nuggets officially debuted this week, and the brand known for having the meats has partnered with Rick Ware Racing (RWR) to bring these tender, juicy, hand-cut, bite-sized pieces of steak to race fans.

Cody Ware, driver of the No. 51 Arby’s Ford Mustang Dark Horse for RWR, leads the way for Arby’s activation at Las Vegas with his red-and-white Arby’s Steak Nuggets-emblazoned racecar. And when not turning laps at nearly 190 mph, Ware will be serving up Steak Nuggets from the Arby’s food truck in the speedway’s fan zone, located behind the frontstretch grandstands. From 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. PDT on Saturday and from 11:30-11:50 a.m. PDT on Sunday, fans can get their first taste of Steak Nuggets directly from Ware.

“It’s always fun to be a part of something new, especially when it’s as good as Arby’s Steak Nuggets,” Ware said. “Everyone loves steak, and Arby’s has made it easy to enjoy anywhere, including the racetrack. I’m looking forward to handing out samples to fans this weekend and tapping into the energy they bring to our sport.”

In addition to sharing Steak Nuggets with fans, Ware will share his perspective from behind the wheel of his Arby’s Steak Nuggets Ford Mustang to television viewers during practice and qualifying on Saturday and through all 267 laps on Sunday. His No. 51 machine will carry in-car cameras featuring four distinct views – from the roof, the rear bumper, looking back at Ware, and an interior shot that turns 360 degrees.

TruTV will broadcast practice at 1:30 p.m. PDT/4:30 p.m. EDT followed by qualifying at 2:40 p.m. PDT/5:40 p.m. EDT. The South Point 400 goes green on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. PDT/5:30 p.m. EDT with flag-to-flag coverage delivered by USA. All of the weekend’s track action can be heard on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Whether watching in person or tuning in from home, Arby’s Steak Nuggets are the perfect complement to the NASCAR race weekend at Las Vegas. Seasoned with garlic and pepper, Steak Nuggets are hand-cut, seared and smoked, providing a tasty and premium protein option that can be enjoyed with a fork or just your fingers. It’s a whole new way to nugget, but delivered with convenience.

“Who doesn’t love tender and savory steak? But, until now, it’s been inconvenient to eat, particularly on the go,” said Jeff Baker, Chief Marketing Officer, Arby’s. “That’s why we created this new innovative product. Two of America’s favorite foods – nuggets and steak – combined to create Arby’s Steak Nuggets. No knife needed, fork optional. For race fans at the track, it’s the perfect meal.”

Arby’s Steak Nuggets can be enjoyed three different ways:

● The Steak Nuggets entrée: comes in 5- or 9-count and served with a fork and Hickory BBQ sauce.

● The Steak Nugget Sandwich: includes Steak Nuggets with Havarti Cheese, crispy onions, tangy pickles and mayo on a toasted bun.

● The Steak Nugget Bowl: features Steak Nuggets on top of creamy white cheddar Mac ‘n Cheese with a sprinkling of crispy onions.

Steak Nuggets are available now at Arby’s restaurants nationwide for a limited time only. To find your nearest location, visit Arbys.com/locations. For fans attending the South Point 400 in person, search HERE for the Las Vegas location closest to you and, of course, visit the Arby’s food truck in the speedway’s fan zone.

Upon arriving at Las Vegas with either a full stomach or lunch in hand from Arby’s, fans will see a fast, sweeping racetrack. Drivers lap the 1.5-mile oval in under 30 seconds with an average speed that approaches 185 mph. With its corners banked at 20 degrees, two- and three-wide racing is common, and Las Vegas’ aged asphalt provides enough grip for drivers to search different lines in an effort to find more speed.

“Vegas is one of my favorite tracks to go to on the schedule. It’s got a lot of character,” Ware said. “Being out in the desert, it can be a little bit dusty, and you have some pretty significant bumps, especially over in the corners. You have to be very cognizant of your corner entry and the line you’re taking, because if you hit those bumps in turns one and two just the wrong way, it could end your day pretty quickly.

“And with the different lines you can run, you can find ways to make the car work for you even if your car isn’t exactly where you want it. If you don’t have a good handle on your car, there’s about a lane-and-a-half you can use in turns one and two. But if your car is handling well, you can take those bumps aggressively. That opens up a lot of racing opportunities from the bottom of the racetrack all the way to the wall.”

About Arby’s:

Arby’s, founded in 1964, is a leading destination for high-quality meat-crafted sandwiches, with more than 3,500 restaurants in six global markets. Arby’s is part of the Inspire Brands family of restaurants. For more information, visit Arbys.com and InspireBrands.com.

About Rick Ware Racing:

Rick Ware has been a motorsports mainstay for more than 40 years. It began at age 6 when the third-generation racer began his driving career and has since spanned four wheels and two wheels on both asphalt and dirt. Competing in the SCCA Trans Am Series and other road-racing divisions led Ware to NASCAR in the early 1980s, where he finished third in his NASCAR debut – the 1983 Warner W. Hodgdon 300 NASCAR Grand American race at Riverside (Calif.) International Raceway. More than a decade later, injuries would force Ware out of the driver’s seat and into full-time team ownership. Josh Berry and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team return to Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend with confidence – and history – on their side. Earlier this season, Berry earned his first career NASCAR Cup Series victory at the 1.5-mile track, giving the Wood Brothers their 101st win in the process.

That breakthrough performance came in March’s Pennzoil 400, where Berry and the No. 21 Ford Mustang Dark Horse team showcased their resilience and speed. After an extra pit stop to tighten a loose wheel dropped him to 19th at the start of the final Stage, Berry methodically worked his way back through the field and outdueled Daniel Suárez in a 34-lap showdown to capture the checkered flag.

The win also marked Miles Stanley’s first triumph as crew chief and capped a dominant weekend for the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustang Dark Horse, which was among the fastest cars from start to finish. Berry started seventh, earned Stage points in both segments, and led 18 total laps, including the final 16 in a row, on his way to a 1.36-second margin of victory.

The performance locked Berry into the NASCAR Playoffs and secured at least a top-16 finish in the final standings, a great accomplishment in his first campaign with a new team.

“Going back to Las Vegas brings back a lot of great memories for our team,” Berry said. “Getting that first win there in the spring was a huge moment, and it really showed what we’re capable of when everything comes together. Since then, we’ve continued to make gains and build chemistry as a group, and hopefully we can carry that progress into this weekend and have another great run there.”

Practice for the South Point 400 kicks off Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET, followed by qualifying at 5:40 p.m. ET, both airing on truTV.

The 267-lap, 400.5-mile race takes the green flag Sunday at 5:30 p.m. ET with live coverage on USA Network. Stage breaks are scheduled for Laps 80 and 165.

How much is a camper van? This question dominates early planning conversations for anyone considering vanlife. The answer depends heavily on size, features, and intended use. Understanding the cost of a camper van begins with choosing the wheelbase. Comparing the Mercedes Sprinter 144 versus 170 reveals significant price differences that affect both the initial investment and long-term expenses.

Breaking Down Camper Van Costs by Size

Wheelbase selection impacts your budget immediately and for years to come. The 144-inch model offers lower entry costs, while the 170-inch requires more investment upfront but delivers additional space and comfort.

Base vehicle prices typically differ by $3,000 to $5,000 between the two wheelbases. However, total ownership costs extend far beyond the initial purchase. When asking how much a camper van costs, it’s essential to consider the complete financial picture, including fuel, insurance, maintenance, and modifications.

How Much Is a Camper Van: 144 Wheelbase Breakdown

Initial Investment
A completed 144 wheelbase Sprinter generally ranges from $85,000 to $140,000, including both the base vehicle and the custom interior.

  • Base vehicle cost: $45,000 to $55,000 for a new Sprinter 144
  • Interior build: $40,000 to $85,000, depending on materials and features
  • Essential systems: $8,000 to $15,000 for solar, water, and climate control

Budget-conscious buyers may choose DIY builds or minimalist layouts, while premium designs with advanced electronics, hardwood finishes, and luxury fixtures drive up the price.

Ongoing Expenses
The 144 wheelbase often saves money over time.

  • Fuel economy: 18–20 MPG average
  • Tire replacement: Four tires at $800–$1,200 total
  • Parking: Fits in standard spaces, avoiding oversized vehicle fees
  • Insurance: $1,200–$2,400 annually

Who Saves with the 144
Weekend travelers and couples benefit most from the compact 144. It’s ideal for those who value maneuverability and cost efficiency without sacrificing comfort.

How Much Does a Camper Van Cost: 170 Wheelbase Analysis

Initial Investment
A completed 170 wheelbase Sprinter typically costs between $95,000 and $160,000.

  • Base vehicle cost: $48,000 to $58,000
  • Interior build: $47,000 to $102,000
  • Essential systems: Similar to 144, though larger battery capacity may be needed

The added 40 inches of length increases material, labor, and component costs. More cabinetry, insulation, flooring, and wiring are required, which extends build time and expense.

Ongoing Expenses
Operating costs rise with size.

  • Fuel economy: 16–18 MPG
  • Tires: Six tires cost $1,200–$1,800
  • Parking: Oversized fees possible in some areas
  • Insurance: $1,400–$2,800 annually

Who Benefits from the 170
Full-time travelers, remote workers, and families benefit from the added space. The investment becomes worthwhile for those who live, work, and travel long-term in their van.

Detailed Cost Comparison: 144 vs 170

Cost Category144 Wheelbase170 WheelbaseDifference
Base vehicle$45,000–$55,000$48,000–$58,000+$3,000–$5,000
Interior work$40,000–$85,000$47,000–$102,000+$7,000–$17,000
Total range$85,000–$140,000$95,000–$160,000+$10,000–$20,000

The 170 model consistently costs about 10–15% more. This difference grows with premium materials or advanced systems.

Five-Year Ownership Costs

144 Wheelbase (50,000 miles over 5 years):

  • Fuel: ~$14,000
  • Tires: ~$1,800
  • Insurance: ~$8,000
  • Maintenance: ~$4,500

170 Wheelbase (50,000 miles over 5 years):

  • Fuel: ~$16,500
  • Tires: ~$3,000
  • Insurance: ~$10,000
  • Maintenance: ~$5,200

Over five years, the 170 costs about $7,400 more to operate, a key factor when budgeting long-term vanlife expenses.

Hidden Costs That Affect Both Wheelbases

Essential Systems
Solar power, water systems, and climate control add substantial costs regardless of wheelbase.

  • Solar setup: $3,000–$8,000
  • Water system: $1,500–$3,500
  • Heating/cooling: $2,000–$5,000
  • Electrical: $2,500–$6,000

Material Choices
The choice of materials impacts both price and longevity. Sustainable options like bamboo, wool insulation, and marine-grade components are more expensive upfront but last longer and retain resale value.

  • Budget materials: $15,000–$25,000
  • Premium materials: $35,000–$55,000

Professional vs DIY Builds
Labor is a major cost variable.

While DIY builds save money, poor craftsmanship can lead to water damage or electrical issues costing thousands in repairs. Working with professionals ensures safety and long-term reliability.

  • Holds value better with quality materials
  • Slightly higher depreciation (18–23%)

Both models maintain strong resale when well-maintained and built with durable, sustainable materials.

Working with Reliable Experts

When investing in a six-figure vehicle, the right builder makes all the difference. Experienced teams with years in the van conversion industry understand how to balance cost, function, and design.

Professionals who focus on sustainability and craftsmanship typically deliver Sprinter camper vans that perform better and last longer. Quality construction and smart material choices pay for themselves through comfort, reliability, and resale value.

Making Your Budget Work

Financing Options

  • RV loans: 4–7% interest for qualified buyers
  • Personal loans: 6–12% interest
  • Home equity loans: Lower rates but require collateral

A $120,000 van at 6% interest for 10 years averages around $1,330 per month. Always factor in insurance, fuel, and maintenance before committing.

Phased Upgrades
Some travelers start small and add features over time, spreading costs across years. This approach works best for those comfortable handling minor installations themselves.

Expert Insight on Cost vs Value

Industry experts agree that the true value of camper vans lies in how well they match the owner’s lifestyle. Spending more upfront on quality systems and materials prevents expensive repairs and increases daily comfort.

A thoughtful build tailored to your needs provides long-term satisfaction and confidence on the road.

Final Thoughts on Camper Van Investment

So how much does a camper van cost? Expect to spend between $85,000 and $160,000+ for a professionally completed Mercedes Sprinter. The 144 wheelbase suits couples and part-time travelers, while the 170 provides essential space for full-timers and families.

Your budget should align with your intended lifestyle. Honest evaluation of needs versus wants helps you make smart financial decisions without sacrificing comfort or adventure.
