RCR Event Preview – Daytona International Speedway Road Course

Richard Childress Racing at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course … Continuing to navigate through an unprecedented 2020 season, Richard Childress Racing will compete at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course for the first time this weekend. In order to prepare for the new challenge, RCR Cup Series drivers Austin Dillon and Tyler Reddick have spent significant time preparing with their teams in the Chevrolet simulator. Earl Bamber, who will make his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut this weekend under the RCR banner, has competed on the configuration seven times, earning four podium finishes in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Series.

Richard Childress at the Daytona Road Course … Richard Childress competed at the Daytona Road Course as a driver in 1969 when he drove his 1968 Camaro to a 13th-place finish in the Citrus 250. Childress went on to compete on the Florida road course a total of five times, racing in the NASCAR Grand Touring Division and NASCAR Grand American Series. He finished in the top 10 in three out of the five races, with a best result of eighth in 1970.

Catch the Action … The NASCAR Xfinity Series UNOH 188 at the Daytona Road Course will be televised live Saturday, August 15, beginning at 3 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network and will be broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.

Playoffs Bound … Dillon survived three late-race restarts at Texas Motor Speedway to earn the win in the No. 3 Bass Pro Shops/E-Z-GO/Tracker Off Road Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, securing a spot in the 2020 NASCAR Playoffs. His teammate, Tyler Reddick, finished a strong second to create a 1-2 finish for Richard Childress Racing.

AUSTIN DILLON QUOTES:
How do you prepare for the Daytona International Speedway Road Course as a driver who has never competed on that configuration before?
“I’ve been working on the simulator to prepare for the race. We’ve all been putting a lot of hours in leading up to the race. You can get some information from watching former races at the track in other series and seeing past 24 Hours of Daytona races, but overall there are some differences because stock cars drive differently and there is an added chicane. It’s an American Ethanol race, and I can’t wait to get out there in that green No. 3 car. I’m looking forward to the race. Some of the guys are going to have a little bit of an advantage because they’ve raced there before, but a lot of us have not and it will be a fun test. We’re just going to go out there and give it our all and see what we come up with.”

Will it be helpful having all three NASCAR series competing at the Daytona Road Course this weekend?
“I think it will be interesting having NASCAR Cup Series cars out on the track. It will be good to get to see the NASCAR Truck Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series on the track before us so we can see how rubber gets laid down and where speed is made.”

Walk us through a lap at the Daytona Road Course …
“It all starts in Turn 1. Obviously, blending onto the track right past the area where we would normally be leaving pit road if we were competing on the oval configuration, that we are all used to. You’ve got a sharp left there, a quick back and forth, and then to another hard right-hander. That slow section through the middle of the track is going to be key, I think. The cars that get through that the best are going to be your best cars of the weekend. Also getting onto the big track in Turns 1 and 2 seems to be where a ton of the speed is carried since that is the longest straightaway. There’s a little section on the back that’s not there for the 24 Hours of Daytona race. It’s a chicane that you approach when you come off of Turn 4. You have to get slowed up really quick for it before the start finish line. It seems like a really fun road course compared to what we usually run. It’s kind of spread out. There are a lot of left-hand turns, which I like because that’s what I’m used to. So we will get there and take what it gives us.”

Tyler Reddick and the No. 8 Cat App Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE at Daytona International Speedway …This weekend, Tyler Reddick and the NASCAR Cup Series will be making the series’ debut on the Daytona International Speedway Road Course configuration. Reddick has two wins and two pole awards across NASCAR’s three national touring series on Daytona’s oval configuration.

TYLER REDDICK QUOTE:
Knowing that NASCAR has not run on Daytona International Speedway’s Road Course before, how are you preparing for the weekend?
“I’m very excited about the possibility this weekend brings for me and the No. 8 Cat App team. I’ve been taking advantage of Chevrolet’s simulator they have available to us to help get familiar with the course and start learning where passes could potentially be made on Sunday. The Chevy simulator has helped me a lot with road courses in the past. That has always been a style of racing I’ve found challenging, but I think that by using the simulator a lot last year, I was a lot closer to where I wanted to be heading into those weekends. I’m hoping to reach the same level of preparation this year by just making lap after lap on the simulator and practice hitting my marks every time. I’ve also leaned a lot on AJ Allmendinger again. He has worked with my crew chief, Randall Burnett, a lot in the past, and he helped me a lot last year too with the road courses. Randall also has a really good idea on how to set up our Chevrolets for road courses, so I’m confident he has a plan on where he wants the car to be before we even reach the track this weekend. But overall, I’m really looking forward to this weekend. There is just a lot of possibility out there to make up points on the other drivers we’re on the Playoff bubble with, and we’ll need to capitalize on that.”

This Week’s No. 21 KCMG Chevrolet Camaro at Daytona International Speedway … Road course ace Earl Bamber will make his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut in the seat of the No. 21 KCMG Chevrolet Camaro for Richard Childress Racing this weekend at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course. Although new to NASCAR, the New Zealand native has competed at the 3.56-mile road course seven times, earning four podium finishes in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Series.

What does it mean to you to be making your NASCAR debut this weekend for Richard Childress Racing?
“It’s a really proud moment for me. It’s been a long time in the making to finally make it on the grid, and it’s also a really cool event to be at the Daytona Road Course. Since this is the first time NASCAR is racing there, it levels the playing field for everyone as well. I’m really looking forward to just rolling off in our No. 21 KCMG Chevrolet and seeing what NASCAR is all about. I’ve been spending a lot of time on the simulator, so now it’s time to just go racing.”

What do you anticipate will be the biggest differences in a NASCAR Stock Car compared to the cars you are more accustomed to racing?
“Everyone talks about the weight of the cars. Obviously for us, we’ll have a heap more power in the stock car as well, which I can’t wait for. I’m going in there with an open mind to feel it out and see what it’s like. I think I’ll love it. In the end, it brings a lot more back on the driver with everything we’ve got to do inside the cockpit, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Can you talk us through your preparation for the Daytona Road Course?

“I’m very excited to get out there and hit the race track. It’s going to be interesting with really nobody ever being around that place and having no practice. That’s going to be pretty wild. I’ve went back and watched a lot of YouTube videos, a lot of IMSA races, stuff like that, just trying to look at, basically, the race track and how it’s laid out and just try to figure out how I want to enter each corner. I really looked at the map a lot. I’ve done some stuff on iRacing and some Toyota sim stuff. I’m doing basically all I can do without us having practice, just really trying to focus on the map and just trying to put in my mind how each turn is so I know exactly how to approach each turn.”

It looks like there is seven-to-eight guys who have never driven a road course in anything. What do you think that’s going to do to the dynamic?

“It’s going to be wild. I think in the Truck race, hopefully, the first lap or two, everyone takes it easy. If you look at year’s past at just road course races in general, a lot of people are really aggressive, just trying to get to a good spot. I wouldn’t be so sure that we won’t have a caution on the first lap. It’s going to be a big unknown. It’s nice that I’ve ran some road course races. I ran Canada last year and the year before that, so I do have some road course experience, and have ran fairly decent, so I think that’s going to play a little bit of advantage just because I’ve been around road courses and the downshifting and how to approach corner with your braking and everything else. The guys that have never done it, I definitely feel for them, especially without practice or anything to go off of. That’s definitely going to be a tall order and a task for them.”

Have you had time to assess where you are at heading into the postseason?

“I think we are in a really good spot. We’ve shown speed each and every week. Our goal was to be able to compete and to be a top-five truck each and every week, and I feel like everybody at HRE (Hattori Racing Enterprises), Scott (Zipadelli, crew chief) and all of the guys, have done that basically every weekend. We might start out and be in the back half of the top-10, but me and Scott, we’ve been really good working together, making the right calls and adjustments, that way at least by the end of the race, we are fighting for a top-five, and fighting for the win. I really feel like we are in a good spot. If you take away where we finished last weekend, and if you take away the Texas deal, where we had the engine issue, we’ve been competitive, we’ve been a top-five truck basically every week. We’re just showing the consistency that we have. I think that we are actually in a really good spot. We have a really good chance at these Playoffs. It’s going to be all about staying consistent. If you can win a race, that’s great, but the biggest thing is just staying consistent, get stage points. That’s really the only thing that we haven’t done this year is getting stage wins that we would like. I think we only have like one stage win this season. That’s really the only thing that we’ve been talking about, and trying to check off that box a little bit better is trying to be a little bit better earlier in the race, so we can at least get one or two stage wins throughout a race to help us when the Playoffs start.

Where would you stack up the Daytona Road Course on the most challenging things you have done in your career?

“It’s got to be right up there at the top. It’s going to probably be the most challenging thing I’ve ever done just because we’re not going to have any practice. If you would have told me that we would have had five laps of practice, then I would have said it wouldn’t have been that bad just because you can at least see the race track, shake your truck down a little bit for five laps and be okay. But the fact that we are not going to have any practice, and just line them up, and take one or two pace laps around the truck to kind of get familiarized with it, and then drop the green flag off into turn one, not knowing what is to be expected, that’s a really tall order. We feel like the things and the preparations that I’ve done in the sim and everything else with Toyota that I kind of know where my shift points are going to be and what gear I’m going to be in in certain corners, but you don’t know until you get to the race track for certain. A lot of big unknowns. It’s going to be exciting, but it’s definitely going to be challenging. It’s nice that we are starting up front. Hopefully, we can just stay up there. The biggest thing is just getting single-filed out and just trying to stay in that top-five and feel your truck out the first five or so laps and see where you are at with things and start making a plan with your crew chief on what adjustments you need to make or if the splitter is too high or too low, things like that. A lot of big unknowns and the biggest thing is going to be you and the crew chief being able to diagnose what the truck is doing to make it that much better throughout the race. If you can do that better than everybody else and just stay on track, you are going to have a good day.”

Could you provide us an update on what you are working towards for next year?

“As of right now, we don’t have anything in the works. We’ve been talking with a lot of our partners and sponsors, United Rentals, is a big sponsor for us, and one of the biggest sponsors I’ve ever had, so we’ve been talking with those guys and trying to figure out what the plan looks like for next year. We are still working at it. We’re at a point in the season where we are trying to slowly just figure it out. I’m just happy to be in the position I’m at. We will see what next year looks like. I don’t know what the future holds as far as Truck racing, Xfinity racing or anything like that, I’m not real sure there. It’s still kind of a big unknown, but everything is looking okay. I think next year’s going to be a good year. We just have to figure out what we are doing.”

Turning Lefts and Rights Again: For the third time in his NASCAR Xfinity Series career, Joe Graf Jr. will compete on a road course. Graf, 22, has never seen the 3.56-mile, 14-turn road course before Saturday’s UNOH 188.

Joe Graf Jr. Xfinity Series Career Road Course Nuggets: At tracks classified as a road course, Graf has competed in just two NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Road America (Wisc.) respectively.

He holds an average starting position of 27.5 (per rule book) and an average result of 25.5 with 100 percent of the laps complete.

Put Me In Coach: During this weekend’s Xfinity weekend at Daytona, Graf Jr. is working with fellow NASCAR driver Will Rodgers who will serve in a dual role as a spotter and driver coach for the 19th Xfinity Series race of the season.

Rodgers an experienced road racer has four ARCA Menards Series wins between the East and West divisions, including victories at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International, Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway and New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP).

Rodgers will be able to give Graf Jr. firsthand knowledge of the Daytona Road Course as he’s set to make his seventh career ARCA Menards Series premier start in Friday afternoon’s General Tire 100 in Daytona Beach.

From The Pit Box: Industry veteran Patrick Donahue is Joe Graf Jr.’s crew chief. He will crew chief his 171st NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Saturday afternoon. In his previous 170 races, he has two wins, eight top-five and 14 top-10 finishes to his resume.

Like Graf Jr., Donahue will make his Xfinity Series debut as crew chief on the Daytona International Speedway Road Course.

This Is 2020: Entering the Daytona Road Course, Graf Jr. has 21 NASCAR Xfinity Series starts to his credit with four top-15 and eight top-20 finishes. After 18 races in 2020, he stands 21st in the championship standings with 15 races remaining.

Hello From The Other Side: Graf Jr. has a teammate at SS GreenLight Racing. Sports car standout Jade Buford drives the No. 07 SS GreenLight Racing Chevrolet Camaro. The 32-year-old will make his third Xfinity start of 2020 on Saturday.

Wallace Dashes to First-ever On-demand Delivery Platform Partnership; First Appearance Scheduled for the DAYTONA Road Course

For the first time in the history of the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS), the inaugural Go Bowling 235 at the Daytona Road Course is set to debut on Sunday, August 16th at the famed Daytona International Speedway (DIS). It becomes the 23rd of 36 races on the NCS 2020 circuit.

The event was positioned in lieu of the original road course date at Watkins Glen International in upstate New York, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The historic road racing weekend, Aug. 14-16, begins on Friday, August 14 with the ARCA Menards Series race at 5:00 p.m. ET, followed by the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at 3:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 15, and is capped with a Sunday doubleheader on August 16, featuring NASCAR’s RV & Outdoors Truck Series at 12:00 p.m. ET and the Go Bowling 235 NASCAR Cup Series feature race at 3:00 p.m. ET.

While the 65-lap Go Bowling 235 will run on the same road course layout as the Rolex 24 At Daytona, North America’s premier race for sports cars, it will feature an added twist. The traditional ribbon of asphalt out of Turn 4 will sport a new chicane that transforms the design into a 14-turn, 3.61-mile, high-banked tri-oval/infield road course, which is unique to all motorsports. With NASCAR having curtailed practice sessions during the COVID-19 pandemic, the racing promises to be exciting and intense.

Although the Daytona Road Course is uncharted territory for the competitors, and there are no prior statistics, Chevrolet has shown success at other road courses currently on the NCS tour with a total of 31 victories, more than any other manufacturer:
Watkins Glen International – 2.45-mile, 7-turn road course = 19 Wins
Sonoma Raceway – 2.52-mile, 12-turn road course = 11 Wins
Charlotte Roval – 2.28-mile, 17-turn road course = 1 win

PLAYOFF PICTURE:
With 22 races in the books and just four left in the regular season, the chase to making the Playoff cutline is on. The top-16 in the standings at the end of the regular season will have a chance to compete for the title of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Champion. As the points stand heading to Daytona weekend, five slots in the top 16 in the standings are occupied by Team Chevy drivers.

“I am a bit more optimistic on how this race is going to turn out. I was at Daytona for the 24-hour race this past year. I feel like even that time gives me a good idea of what the track looks like and what the car needs to feel like based on the things I heard and saw. I know some guys have made laps on that road course in sports cars, which may give them a bit of an advantage. There are simulation tools though that I can use to prepare and get better for this race. I’m just really excited about this race overall.”

Byron on his style of road course racing:
“When it comes to road course racing, I feel like I try to find a nice balance between aggression and consistency. When I need to make fast laps, I am super aggressive by using the curbs, getting as much as I can out of the apex of the corners and using aggressive braking to pass guys. Once the race kind of goes on and the pace mellows out though, I settle in and work more on consistency lap after lap. If you just constantly push, push, push, it is extremely hard on the tires. You have to push when you’re trying to pass someone and then set your own pace from there.”

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 16th in Standings:
“I am so excited for this weekend at Daytona. I have a lot of reps (repetitions) and a couple thousand miles on this on this track from competing in the seven Rolex races I’ve been able to compete in, and I also did a July 4th six-hour race there – so bring it on. The challenges of this track – there will be some really high speeds and then the chicane off of four will change that to some degree. It’s going to be a balance of aero efficiency on the straightaways and mechanical grip for the tight little infield section. It’s going to be really interesting for those who have never taken a lap on this track.

“I hope we can make something happen over the next four races and get into the playoffs. I’m very optimistic we can make something happen. I will know if I don’t make the playoffs that I left it all on the track, this team gives 100% and we can all sleep at night knowing that.”

AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 AMERICAN ETHANOL CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 17th in Standings:
“I’ve been working on the simulator to prepare for the race. We’ve all been putting a lot of hours in leading up to the race. It’s an American Ethanol race and I can’t wait to get out there in that green number three car. I think it will be interesting having NASCAR Cup Series cars out on the track. It will be good to get to see the NASCAR Truck Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series on the track before us so we can see how rubber gets laid down and where speed is made. There’s also a little section on the back that’s not there for the 24 Hours of Daytona race. It’s a chicane that you approach when you come off of Turn 4. You have to get slowed up really quick for it before the start finish line. It all starts in Turn 1. Obviously, blending into the area right past the area where we would normally be leaving pit road if we were competing on the oval configuration that we are all used to. You’ve got a sharp left there, a quick back and forth and then to another hard right-hander. That slow section through the middle of the track is going to be really key, I think. The cars that get through that the best are going to be your best cars of the weekend. Also getting onto the big track in Turns 1 and 2 seems to be where a ton of the speed is carried since that is the longest straightaway.

“I’m looking forward to the race. Some of the guys are going to have a little bit of an advantage because they’ve raced there before, but a lot of us have not and it will be a fun test. We’re just going to go out there and give it our all and see what we come up with. It seems like a really fun road course compared to what we usually run. It’s kind of spread out. There’s a lot of left-hand turns, which I like because that’s what I’m used to. So, we will get there and take what it gives us.”

TYLER REDDICK, NO. 8 CAT APP CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 18th in Standings:
Knowing that NASCAR has not run on Daytona International Speedway’s road course before, how are you preparing for the weekend?
“I’m very excited about the possibility this weekend brings for me and the No. 8 Cat App team. I’ve been taking advantage of Chevrolet’s simulator they have available to us to help get familiar with the course and start learning where passes could potentially be made on Sunday. The Chevy simulator has helped me a lot with road courses in the past. That has always been a style of racing I’ve found challenging, but I think that by using the simulator a lot last year, I was a lot closer to where I wanted to be heading into those weekends. I’m hoping to reach the same level of preparation this year by just making lap after lap on the simulator and practice hitting my marks every time. I’ve also leaned a lot on AJ Allmendinger again. He has worked with my crew chief, Randall Burnett, a lot in the past, and he helped me a lot last year too with the road courses. Randall also has a really good idea on how to set up our Chevrolets for road courses, so I’m confident he has a plan on where he wants the car to be before we even reach the track this weekend. But overall, I’m really looking forward to this weekend. There is just a lot of possibility out there to make up points on the other drivers we’re in the Playoff bubbles with, and we’ll need to capitalize on that.”

BUBBA WALLACE, NO. 43 VICTORY JUNCTION CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 20th in Standings:
With road courses, you guys like a lot of creature comforts in there that are different than the ovals. Can you explain how you’re going to get to that without having any laps on track, and really feel like you’re ready to race when the green goes?
“I don’t know if any of us are going to feel like we are ready to race the DAYTONA Road Course. It is going to be an exciting race for sure. I am glad our Richard Petty Motorsports No. 43 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE is not on the front row for this one to drive-off in there and find my marks. And, I don’t want to be like Brad (Keselowski) at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval two years ago and overshoot the corner. We just have to be mindful. This is the most time I have spent preparing for a road course and going to the SIM. I’m actually heading-up to jump on the SIM immediately after this press conference. I am preparing myself for as much as I can to be ready for putting corners together. It’s crazy how, just from watching the 24 Hours of Daytona, you learn which way this track goes. Obviously, turning left immediately after the start/finish line, and going through the infield there. Then you visualize, like man, I used to park here in the road course parking lot. So, it’s going to be cool to racing all around that. It will be exciting for the fans. But again, I have tried to spend so much time prepping for this; so hopefully it works out for Richard Petty Motorsports in the end.”

We were supposed to be at Watkins Glen International this weekend. What’s your take on not going to The Glen this year?
“I’m alright with it. It has not been one of my best race tracks. But I think this, with everything going on with COVID-19, I know NASCAR has been up to their necks in trying to figure-out what the schedule is going to be. I definitely don’t envy them right now. But kudos to them for coming-up with an alternative. And it’s something new. It’s new for NASCAR. I know the road course has been around for years and years. We have been able to watch that on TV right before our season kick-off at Daytona (International Speedway). For us to go in there with no practice, I remember when I was asked ‘we need a solid answer if you’re okay with no practice.’ And I was like, okay, what does everybody else think about this? The final verdict was no practice. Drive-off into Turn 1 and figure-out where you go after that. It will be cool. It’ll be a different alternative to definitely have fans tune-in for that and to be able to watch all the action on NBC. None of us really know what to expect. But, to have a good race and try to continue on momentum from there. Like I said earlier, I have prepped a lot; a lot more than I have in the past to be good here and be successful here. Hopefully it goes hand-in-hand.”

TY DILLON, NO. 13 GEICO FOR YOUR BOAT CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 27th in Standings:
What is your outlook going into the Daytona Road Course for the first time?
“I’ve always felt really good going to road courses, especially in the Truck and Xfinity Series. Sonoma and Watkins Glen have been tougher to adapt to in the Cup Series, because there is so much experience by teams at those tracks. So anytime we go to a new place or specifically a new road course, I welcome the challenge where we are all in the same unique situation.”

Have you been able to prepare for the chicane at all?
“It will definitely be challenging to adapt to that corner. I’ve spent time on the simulator these past couple of weeks, so while we don’t know what it will feel like in an actual race car, that gets our GEICO team as close as we can. But then again, everything is new, so it’s just a matter of managing your day and not getting yourself in trouble early. You need to be able to attack the corners and go for it at the end of the race. It’s going to be a race full of adapting. Some guys will pick it up quickly based on experience and then some drivers will hopefully learn throughout and be in contention by the end.”

MATT KENSETH, NO. 42 CLOVER CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 28th in Standings:
“With the Daytona Road Course coming up, there are a lot of unknowns. A lot of people have never raced there before. Some of us have raced there, but it’s been many, many years ago, and a lot of things have changed since then; plus, a different chicane coming off Turn 4. So, we’ve been using the Chevrolet simulator a lot just to go out and get some reference points and try to get somewhat of a feel for it and get some good visuals, and kind of know where the corners are and the braking zones and some of the tough spots and all that. So, I think all the Chevy drivers have been there quite a bit to try and get a feel for it. Hopefully that’ll give us a little head start on getting there and hopefully make us more competitive when they drop the green flag.”

Stoffel Vandoorne Earns Mecerdes-Benz EQ First Formula E Victory

A series of first continued at the Berlin E-Prix Thursday for the final round of season six in the Formula E electric series. Stoffel Vandoorne capitalized on pole position and gave Mercedes-Benz EQ their first overall career victory after leading lights out, and having a clean race in the German’s hometown, but had to hold off a hard-charging Buemi in the end.

“We had the perfect race, no threats from behind, Seb (Buemi) was always close but we had him under control,”. We couldn’t have dreamt of a better way to finish the season than with a 1-2 for Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team. Being second in the championship it’s definitely a bonus. Over the past week we had showed we had a good race pace but to execute that from the front whilst leading the race it’s quite different. I’m super happy we managed to pull that off. The whole team has done a fantastic job, I have been struggling in qualifying in the past couple of races but today everything was picture perfect!”

Vandoorne’s perfect day started with qualifying when the German set a lap time of 1:15.717, which was also Mercedes-Benz’s first-ever pole position as well in the series.

Once the lights went out for Round 11 in Berlin, there was some intense action near the podium spot. Four drivers would battle for third, with those being Wednesday’s podium finish Rene Rast, then Nyck de Vries, Robin Frijns, and Edoardo Mortara. Through the first 10 mins of the race, Mercedes de Vries and Vandoorne made up the top two spots with everyone else chasing them down.

As Vandoorne and de Vries were trying to lock out the top spots, they had to fend off a charging Sebastien Buemi who had a great car throughout the event. Buemi actually at one point in the race, passed Vandoorne for a short period of time. The Switzerland native, however, gave up the lead after using ATTACK Mode, which put Vandoorne back in the first place.

Meanwhile, the DS Techeetah of Jean-Eric Vergne, and BMW i Andretti’s Alexander Sims had a battle for position in the back of the pack. At some point during the battle, the two caused a collision with another car, and FIA officials wound up giving Vergne a warning for the incident.

With time winding down in the season finale, there were some intense moments, especially one that could have brought out the safety car. Wednesday’s winner Oliver Rowland, had a wheel cover come off his Nissan e.dams entry, which was left out on the track. The moment definitely increased intensity for drivers, not knowing whether or not the race pace would be slowed. However, series officials let the race remain green. For Rowland, his day was cut short, and out of the event early.

Back up front, the battle for podiums heated up again with Buemi moving all the way to second, and able to get by de Vries with around 10 minutes remaining. During that same moment, drivers Lucas di Grassi and Robin Frijns almost wrecked each other in of the turns. In fact, di Grassi’s car actually touched Frijns machine, which caused Frijns to receive a left-front tire puncture while battling for sixth place. Though, Frijns puncture would only get worse and caused him to lockup in the hairpin with Maximilian Günther.

On lap 33, just a few laps before the checkered flag flew, de Vries got back around Buemi for second. Once the time expired and all drivers crossed the line, it was de Vries who finished second in the running order, thus helping Mercedes-Benz EQ to grab their first-ever 1-2 finish.

“Phew! What a relief,”! de Vries said. “All the pressure just melted away once I’d crossed the finish line. On previous occasions, I’ve often got close to finishing on the podium, but unfortunately, it just never happened for me, so it feels really good to have finally succeeded to conclude this long and grueling marathon. We did well with energy management, and I was able to keep closing on Stoffel towards the end of the race. Our strategy paid off in this instance. Overtaking is harder on this track layout than on the first two that we raced on, which is why we thought we could see a chance of finishing second, and luckily, our plan worked out. I wasn’t completely free of error this week, so it feels really great to hit back with such an amazing race today. The season was a little bit of a roller-coaster for me, so it’s nice to end it with my first podium, our first one-two win, and P3 in the team championship. I think we really deserved this result and I’m very pleased for the whole team. We couldn’t have wished for a better end to our season before this final round kicked off.”

Team Principle, Ian James is ecstatic for the teams first victory.

“What a phenomenal result at the end of a very unique event,” James said. “Huge congratulations to Stoffel for his first win. What’s more, than we can finally celebrate the first-ever fully-electric race win for Mercedes-Benz Motorsports. Also huge congratulations as well for Nyck for securing P2. These combined efforts pushed us to P3 in the Team Championship and Stoffel even clinched P2 in the Driver Championship. After all the hard work and trials and tribulations of the last days, a fantastic result. Finishing P1 and P2 today is something that the team have worked hard for and they absolutely deserve it.”
 
“We now look forward to getting Season 7 underway. There’s a lot of hard work ahead of us before then but we’ve also learned a huge amount through the ups and downs we had during Season 6. I’d like to add my congratulations once again to DS Techeetah for the Team Championship and of course to Antonio Felix da Costa for the Driver Championship.”

Even though Mercedes-Benz EQ enjoyed season-ending success, Antonio Felix da Costa remained the champion, as he locked the driver’s championship a few races early.

Iconic name celebrates 75 years of history at Indianapolis in 2020

INDIANAPOLIS (13 August 2020) – An Indianapolis Motor Speedway tradition older than the singing of “Back Home Again in Indiana” and the balloon release continues when the Justice Brother’s returns as a participant for the 75th for the 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 next Sunday.

An international manufacturer of additives, lubricants, and cleaners, the Justice Brothers got their start in the automotive and racing world when Ed and Zeke Justice built their first race car in 1936.

The family-owned and operated automotive products business began its motorsports involvement at the local short track level.  The company relocated from California to Jacksonville, Florida in the late 1940s, sponsoring NASCAR pioneers including the Flock brothers, Lee Petty, Red Byron, Buck Baker, Curtis Turner and Fireball Roberts.

The Justice family has been involved in the Indianapolis 500 ever since 1946, when  Zeke Justice was a member of George Robson’s winning team. 

That first Indianapolis outing started the family legacy, and the Justice Brothers name has now been involved with more than 70% of all Indianapolis 500s ever run, making it one of many long-established traditions that are part of the history and lore of the once a year event.  “Back Home Again” was first part of the pre-race ceremonies the following year, with the balloon release first held in 1948. 

Bayless Leverett drove the first Justice Brother’s-sponsored entry in the 1949 Indianapolis 500, and drivers and teams sponsored by the Justice family reads like a “who’s who” in American motorsports, including Frank Kurtis, Johnnie Parsons, Freddie Agabashian, Jim Rathmann, the Granatelli brothers, Johnny Rutherford, A.J. Foyt, P.J. Jones, Andretti Autosport, Eddie Cheever, Steve Kinser, Buddy Rice, Buddy Lazier and Jeff Ward.

The family involvement has taken on a wide range of forms through the years at the Brickyard, from building cars for the race to being on the pit crews to team sponsorship. This year, the tradition continues with Justice Brothers sponsoring the two-car entry of Dreyer & Reinbold Racing as well as the single-car effort from Meyer Shank Racing.

The Justice Brother’s were sole sponsors of Frank Kurtis’s Indianapolis  car program, including 1950 Indianapolis  500 winner Parsons. Two years later, they sponsored the second-place finisher, the Granatelli brothers entry driven by Rathmann.

In the 1960s, the family teamed with legendary car builder A.J. Watson, whose cars won six Indianapolis 500s.

The 1970s brought a relationship with Jim Gilmore on Foyt’s legendary Coyote. The Justice family logo rode on the side of Foyt’s fourth 500 victory in 1977, and his 30th 500 in 1987. In recent years, the team has sponsored drivers including P.J. Jones, Townsend Bell, Sage Karam and J.R. Hildebrand.

In addition to the outstanding tradition at the Brickyard, Justice Brothers-sponsored entries have excelled in other forms of American motorsports. 

Last year, Justin Lofton became the first three-time overall champion of the Mint 400 off road race, while Brendan Gaughan and Jake Gaughan were Class 1 Champions of the Baja 1000. Justice Brothers sponsored Kalitta Motorsports NHRA Funny Car world titles for Del Worsham in 2015 and J.R. Todd in 2018. Their drag racing involvement dates back to being the first paid sponsor for the legendary Don Garlits.

In major American sports car competition, Wayne Taylor Racing’s CadillacDPi Prototypes captured the overall victory in the Rolex 24 At Daytona in 2017, 2019 and 2020. Justice Brothers also won the Prototype Challenge title at the prestigious event in 2016 and 2017. In addition, Justice Brothers-sponsored teams also won recent titles in Pirelli World Challenge, Lamborghini Super Trofeo and Porsche Trophy West.

Justice Brothers also backed Rhys Millen’s winning cars at Pikes Peak in 2015 and 2017, and sponsored the winning Dreyer & Reinbold Racing team to the 2016 Red Bull Global Rally Cross Lights championship.

Top New Country Trio to Share Their Signature Harmonies for the National Anthem Prior to the NASCAR Xfinity Series Race at the World Center of Racing

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 13, 2020) – Top new country music artists Temecula Road will virtually perform the National Anthem prior to the UNOH 188 At The DAYTONA Road Course on Saturday, Aug. 15. The group will share their trademark harmonies for the National Anthem prior to the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at the “World Center of Racing”.

Temecula Road, named after the California town, is comprised of sisters Emma (20) and Maddie Salute (19), and Dawson Anderson (20). The group has been lauded by CMT, The Huffington Post, Sounds Like Nashville, and Taste of Country as one of the top new country recording artists. Their signature sound and covers have also earned praise from Carrie Underwood, Dan + Shay, and Brett Eldredge.

Temecula Road, signed to Buena Vista Records, has released three new acoustic tracks, “Fades” which hit Top 5 on the Radio Disney Country Chart, followed by Rolling Stone Country Song You Need to Hear “Never Knew I Needed You,” and the soulful track, “Maybe Not”. They also released a cover of multi-platinum No. 1 smash, “The Climb,” prior to graduation season. Daytona International Speedway 2020 Season

Road course racing – NASCAR Cup style – is back in Daytona Beach, Fla. after running on the old beach-road course from 1949-58. A limited number of fans will get the opportunity to see the Go Bowling 235 At The DAYTONA Road Course, along with the Sunoco 159 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race, on Sunday, Aug. 16. NASCAR will also return to DAYTONA at the end of August to the high banks of the 2.5-mile trioval with the Coke Zero Sugar 400 (Aug. 29). It will mark the final regular season race that will determine the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Playoff driver lineup. The Wawa 250 Powered by Coca-Cola for the NASCAR Xfinity Series takes to the track on Friday, Aug. 28 to ignite the weekend.
