Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets release 2014 Schedule

Earlier this month at the 2014 Canadian Motorsports Expo, the Lucas Oil Can-Am Midgets released their 2014 schedule.

These three-quarter midgets only weighing 890 lbs with the driver are light-weight and fast, no matter the venue they attend, producing lots of side-by-side racing.

The Cam-Am Midgets will kick off their season with a trip to the tight confines of Flamboro Speedway on May 10th. Then the following weekend, they’ll head to Sunset Speedway for a Sunday event on the 3/8 high-banked oval.

On June 14th, they will head to Peterborough Speedway, before going back to Flamboro on the 21st.

They will start July off with a trip to Grand Bend Speedway, a 1/4 mile with only 12 degrees of banking in the corners, on the 5th. They’ll make a return visit to Sunset on the 12th, before heading to the tight Barrie Speedway on the 19th. They’ll finish off July with a trip back to Flamboro on the 26th.

The month of August will kick off with a double-header at Sauble Speedway on the 2nd and the 3rd, before once again hitting Flamboro on the 9th. On August 16th, they will join the ISMA Super Modifieds at Sunset Speedway for a special show. They’ll then finish August off with a trip to Grand Bend on the 23rd and Sauble on the 30th.

The championship will be awarded at the final event of the season, which takes place at Flamboro Speedway on September 20th.  Last year saw Mack DeMan pick up his first career championship.

DeMan started racing go-karts at the age of seven in the Waterloo Regional Kart Club, winning races and championships. From there, he graduated to the Can-Am Midget ranks and currently races the No. 40 Lucas Oil sponsored Can-Am Midget for car owner Andy Mackereth.

After finishing third in points in 2012, DeMan came out last year, strong all season and was able to take home the championship.

“Each year you learn more about set-up and how to run well on track,” he commented earlier this month. “Lots of talent is coming up ranks we’ll have our work cut out next year.”

Helio Castroneves ready to “keep pushing” towards first championship

Last year, Helio Castroneves came up short of winning the championship as he finished second to Scott Dixon.

“That’s gone.  Yesterday’s news.  Now we’re in 2014,” Castroneves said to open up media day earlier this week. “We have a lot of work ahead of us.  We’re ready.  We’re starting some few testings already.  We’re going to be testing Thursday in Barber, then Sebring before the spring training, then the race. 

I’m excited and ready, to be honest, to start the season because it’s been a long off-season in a good way.”

In his 13 year career, Castroneves has finished inside the top five in all but four seasons, including three runner-up finishes and a pair of thirds. As each year passes, a lot of people are left asking – what does Castroneves have to do to win the championship?

“I don’t know.  I have the right line with God, to be honest, and with the Pope, too, especially with John Paul.  He said, ‘When the time comes. I just got to push it’,” Castroneves said. “I just got to keep pushing.  You can’t waiting for something to happen.  You have to continue giving yourself an opportunity.  Well, it may be this year.

“Certainly we did our job last year.  Unfortunately circumstances outside of our control, didn’t happen.  But right now that’s the attitude I’m going with 2014, give ourselves an opportunity, that door will open one day.”

Even without the championship, Castroneves has etched his name into the history books as a three-time winner of the Indianapolis 500.

“For me, Indianapolis 500, if you got to win one race, that’s the race you got to win,” he said. “Especially the position that I’m at, it’s a great opportunity to join an incredible club.  Yes, that would probably be the biggest accomplishment I could do it.

“The championship certainly is personal.  It’s just something that I didn’t get yet.  It’s like one track I didn’t win.  That’s the way I see it.  There are several places that I finish, like Milwaukee is one of the place that I’m always fast and I always finish second or someplace else.  It’s a something that I want to accomplish and win the championship.  I’m going to do everything I can to make it happen.”

As Castroneves looks to make that happen, he will have Roger Penske calling the shots for him.

“I’m super happy.  First time I had him was last year and I’m happy to have him back,” Castroneves commented. “I’m just honored to have him on the radio and happy to have him as the strategist.”

Last year, Castroneves had one win (Texas) and five podium finishes while leading 239 laps. He will look to improve on those numbers this year, working with new Team Penske teammate Juan Pablo Montoya.

In the early days of IndyCar, Montoya and Castroneves were rivals, though Castroneves says that’s behind them as they’re both mature. He added that he’s looking forward to working with Montoya.

“Honestly, it’s amazing to have him in our side,” Castroneves said. “He’s been an incredible addition, and I mean that.  He’s definitely going to be a tough competitor.  Most of what I noticed, which I knew he would be quick adapting on the car, but most of it’s the information that he brought, that I was very surprised and happy about.  Certainly it’s going to make our cars better.”

Castroneves says that so far, him and Montoya, along with teammate Will Power, are getting along well and have taken many trips together. He says he has a good feel for him and feels that they’ll be able to accomplish the goal of bringing Roger Penske a championship.

As the season has the past 10 years, the IndyCar Series kicks off their season in St. Petersburg, an event that Castroneves has won three times in his career. Castroneves commented that he likes the event due to the atmosphere with all the fans that attend and the warm weather that Florida has to offer.

“Plus the track.  The technical side, it makes between the street course with an airport involvement,” Castroneves added. “It’s not always a 90-degree corner like a typical road course has.  You have high-speed corners, things like that.”

Though to continue to build on the success of events like St. Pete and the series as a whole, the series needs young drivers and Castroneves feels that there are several young stars that will come up through the ranks over the next couple of years. 

“I think Indy Lights could be better in 2015 with new cars.  That could become something more important for the new generation,” he commented. “On the other side is leadership now with Derrick Walker and Mark Miles, it shows at the least, the meetings we had before, it shows leadership.  Maybe that’s where we were at the weakest point, and now we see a lot of positiveness.

“I feel great about the series getting in their feet, getting back the way it used to be.  It’s been a long time I haven’t felt that positiveness in the series.  I’m exciting.  I’m honestly really exciting. Media say, They always say the same thing.  But this year with Derrick and Mark Miles, good things for the series and could create a new generation of drivers.”

Denny Hamlin says it’s about keeping the momentum going after Duel win

So far, Denny Hamlin has mastered the art of Budweiser Speedweeks. He won the Sprint Unlimited on Saturday night, and he backed that up by winning the Budweiser Duel last night. Now the driver of the No. 11 FedEx Toyota looks towards the next task – winning the Daytona 500 on Sunday.

“Just keep doing what we’re doing,” he said last night. “We’re on a roll, obviously.  We executed the race today great.”

The success that Hamlin has experienced so far all started last year when he won the season finale at Hometead-Miami Speedway.

“That was a big win,” car owner Joe Gibbs commented. “I think it gave everybody their confidence going into the off-season.  Denny has worked extremely hard.  I think we were all hungry when the year started.  That certainly helps.”

While Hamlin has experienced success so far, he says that the three practices leading up to the Daytona 500 will give him a better sense than the Duel of how his car will be for the big races.

“The little bit of practice we had in the first 500 practice yesterday, the cars drove a lot different,” he added. “They moved around a lot.  Obviously we saw a couple incidents during practice.

“I’m not necessarily sold on whatever’s worked here these few night races is going to be what you’ll roll out for the 500.  I think chassis handling will play a factor, especially if we’re going to run this long on a set of tires.  We still got quite a bit of work to do.”

Beyond making sure the car is handling, Hamlin says the other challenge will be keeping himself in check and not getting into trouble.

“When you go out here and you perform the way we have over these last few races, it’s hard not to just want to go out there, charge out there, show that you’re still on top and still the best right on lap one,” he added. “I think that will be my challenge within myself, is keeping the reins back and realizing how long this race is, trying to be as patient as I can.

“It’s going to be battling those inner demons of wanting to go out there, lead laps, putting yourself in a safe position, but also being conservative and making sure you’re there at the end of the day.”

In the races so far, Hamlin is building his notebook as he continues to learn the rules package. He says it’s all about learning what you have to do in each of the positions you pit yourself in – whether learning in practice, or in the race.

No driver has ever won the Sprint Unlimited, the Budweiser Duel and the Daytona 500. However, if Hamlin can put the pieces together – he may do just that and bring home his first Daytona 500.

Swan Racing Finds Redemption in Budweiser Duels

Things went bad in a big way for Swan Racing during Sprint Cup practice on Wednesday. Early on, Cole Whitt suffered a blown tire that caused his car to slam the outside wall, which resulted significant right side damage. As the team prepared to unload the back-up, a second wreck erupted in the tri-oval as practice resumed. Cole’s teammate Parker Kligerman ended up ripping a hole in the catch-fence before sliding upside down for a few hundred feet. With just one back-up between the two teams, Swan Racing was in a tough spot. With Parker’s car irreparable, they opted to fix Whitt’s wounded No. 26 Toyota Camry

After working late into the night and early in the morning, they managed to make the car raceable. But the job was only half-done. Now, the two rookie drivers had to survive the duels and drive their way into The Great American Race.  Cole Whitt locked himself in with an 11th place finish, but teammate Parker Kligerman wasn’t so fortunate. After an apparent fuel pick-up issue on the final lap, he dropped out of a transfer spot and ended up 17th. That was not enough to make the show, so Parker had to sit and anxiously await the outcome of the second Duel. Whatever happened in that race would determine his fate.

During the second race of the night, he tweeted “This is POSITIVELY the most nerve-wracking thing of my entire life. I’m ready for fatherhood after this. How hard can it be?” After the violent last lap wreck that sent Clint Bowyer flying through the air, NASCAR had to closely look at the video in order to determine the proper finishing positions for each driver. Parker once again tweeted, “No official word yet…. This is insane! C’mon @NASCAR…. We’re freaking out over here!”

The official word finally came down, and the No. 30 Lending Tree Toyota Camry of Parker Kligerman was in the show, via the car’s 2013 owner’s points position. Parker said that sitting there and waiting helplessly was “one of the worst feelings of my life.” Here’s more from PK:

“Pretty big change, eh?  We’ll start there.  Obviously that was a letdown yesterday, as I said to a lot of people here.  One of the most interesting moments of my life, sliding on your roof.But my guys worked incredibly hard.  I know you hear that a lot, pretty cliché.  You don’t understand, we obviously had our second car hurt.  Our guys were trying to put a backup in it, had a Cole’s seat in it.  We had to take that seat out.  Redo everything.  We get in the Duel, in the last lap running ninth with Lending Tree onboard, who just came onboard the morning before, suddenly start to have the fuel issue we had and see the grasp that we had on both cars making the 500 slip away from us, it was one of the worst feelings of my life. Then the worst feeling would be watching that race right there, and I was not a fan of any driver in that race at all throughout the whole thing.  Thankfully it all worked out.”

Parker went on to quote 1976 Formula 1 World Champion James Hunt, when asked about luck…“I don’t believe in bad luck.  It only brings bad luck.”

Cole Whitt described the last lap frenzy of the first Duel as he muscled his way into the Daytona 500:

“I think we were nose to tail for quite a bit there towards the end.  I tried to shuffle Alex out – no offense – it’s the nature of the beast. We were coming down to the end, wanted to get ourselves in.  I didn’t want to be the last car in line.  I was there for a second.  I kind of side-drafted him, put him last in line.  Then made a move later, shuffled myself out.  Maybe a little karma to myself. Alex is a good friend of mine.  We’ve come up through the Sprint car ranks together. Everything focused at the end.  I was trying to get in.  I don’t know where Alex was behind me coming to the last lap.  I tried to pick the best line I could.  I knew guys pulling down to the bottom, it would take a while for them to pull up that speed they needed when they were pulling from the top groove, trying to suck up.  People were losing guys behind them. I gave the 14 a pretty big shove on the last lap to make sure our run was going to be as strong as possible to the line.  Tried to stay hammer down. I didn’t even know if we were in by the time we crossed the finish line.  It was a nail-biter for sure.”

Cole Whitt will start the Daytona 500 in 23rd and Parker Kligerman 41st. Swan Racing finished 22nd with Michael Waltrip in the 2013 Daytona 500, and look to improve on that effort this year with a second car and two new faces behind the wheel.
