Busch ready to battle Gordon for Chase spot with ‘win or bust’ attitude

[media-credit name=”Todd Warshaw, Getty Images for NASCAR” align=”alignright” width=”300″][/media-credit]When the playoffs begin in most sports around the country it becomes win or go home situation. For Kyle Busch and his No. 18 M&M’s team at Joe Gibbs Racing, just getting to NASCAR’s version of the playoffs has that mentality.

Busch qualified second for Sunday’s event at Watkins Glen, the Finger Lakes 355 at The Glen. A rare dose of something good that has gone his way during what has been a rough last two months. After a win at Richmond in May, followed by four straight top five finishes, Busch entered June and suddenly slid off the map.

He’s been locked out of Victory Lane and plagued by anything that could go wrong. There were three straight weeks of engine failures, then four straight weeks of finishes 10th or worse. And just as quickly as Jeff Gordon became the poster child of bad luck and fighting for a Chase spot, Busch joined him there. It wasn’t until Indianapolis two weeks ago that he earned his first top five since May.

Only to hit the turn one wall last weekend in Pocono on lap 19 after a rear brake rotor disintegrated. He fell to 15th in points and out of a Wild Card position. Now with just five races remaining before the Chase starts, Busch and his team need more than a solid day on Sunday.

“I want to win here. This is the next one on the list and this is one I like to run well at,” he said on Saturday after qualifying. “I’ve won here before. I put it on my list every year to come here and try to compete and run up front and win this thing. That’s our goal tomorrow and that’s what we are set out to do.

“Hopefully we can achieve that and put the M&M’s Camry in Victory Lane. You do that and we’ll have that second win for the Wild Card and we’ll go on into the last four races and see if we can’t either keep ourselves in front of the 24 [Jeff Gordon] in points in case he does get a win, or maybe even get ourselves another win.”

While Busch has never been known as a road course ace, his performance the last few seasons has turned him into a contender. In 2008, his first season at JGR, he dominated and swept the road course races. And since his rookie year in 2005, Busch hasn’t finished worse than ninth at Watkins Glen and he’s led a total of 116 laps.

That includes last season in this race. He started on the pole and finished third after leading 49 laps. Except he had been leading on the final restart on lap 91 of 92 before he went off wide into turn one and was passed by eventual winner Marcos Ambrose and Brad Keselowski.

His success at road racing hasn’t come easy. Busch attributes it to both time behind the wheel and getting better at understanding the car. What he can and can’t do with it, how to finesse it, how hard he can throw it around the corners. Once he figured it out the results started to show and now he needs them more than ever. In order to lock himself in the Chase he needs a win or maybe two.

“To lock, three is a lock, but you can have two and just try to keep yourselves in front of the guys that do have one win in case they do get a win,” Busch feels. “Right now, us having one win, Jeff Gordon having one win – that’s who I feel like we’re racing. If we pass him back in points, obviously that will get us back in the Chase.

“He runs really, really well at Atlanta and he also runs good at Bristol, too. There’s an opportunity there for him to get another win, which would make it two. If he gets two and we’re in front of him in points with only one win, then he’s in and we’re out. If you have two, I think we’ll be okay.”

As things stand Busch and Gordon are fighting for the second WC spot. Gordon’s teammate Kasey Kahne currently holds the first spot because he has two wins in his back pocket. So Busch’s approach Sunday and beyond is simple and it’s one that depending on the outcome, will either make or break his season.

“It’s ‘win or bust,’ basically,” he said. “Finishing second or third or fourth isn’t going to get us anywhere.”

Earnhardt Ganassi Racing at Crossroads Heading to the Glen

[media-credit id=26 align=”alignright” width=”300″][/media-credit]They always say what a difference a year makes. In the case of Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, what a difference two years make. 2010 was a banner year for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing starting off with Jamie McMurray’s emotional win in the Daytona 500 as he held off a charging Dale Earnhardt Jr. on the final lap. McMurray once again won on a big stage that June winning the Brickyard 400 following that win with another at Charlotte Motor Speedway in October. Juan Pablo Montoya put EGR back in Victory Lane with a dominant performance at Watkins Glen. Earnhardt Ganassi combined for 4 wins, 15 top 5’s, and 26 top 10’s in the 2010 season.

Unfortunately EGR hasn’t found the same success over these last couple of seasons. Over the last 2 full seasons combined. Jamie McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya have combined for 4 top 5’s and 17 top 10 finishes over the last 62 NSCS races.

These last 15 races of 2012 are crucial for EGR and the chance for redemption is great this weekend at Watkins Glen. Where Juan Pablo Montoya will lead them to the green flag after a track record qualifying run and Jamie McMurray will start 10th. Judging by the remainder of the schedule there are some good opportunities for EGR to salvage what has been a rough 2012 season but the organization received some good news today as Jamie McMurray announced he will be with the team through 2013 and Juan Pablo Montoya also has a contract through the 2013 season.

The goals for EGR for the remainder of 2012 are simple. Wins, consistency, and returning to being competitive every week they hit the track. Chip Ganassi will continue to push forward and find what is needed to get the #1 and 42 teams back in contention for wins and ultimately contention for the chase. This week at the Glen is a golden opportunity to do just that looking ahead to 2013.

Chad Hackenbracht wins second career Menards Pole Award at Berlin Raceway

[media-credit name=”ARCARacing.com” align=”alignright” width=”313″][/media-credit]Fresh off his first career victory at Pocono Raceway, Chad Hackenbracht picked up his second career Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell at Berlin Raceway.

He lapped the 0.438 mile oval in 16.908 seconds behind the wheel of his No. 58 CGH Motorsports Chevrolet. It marks his first on a oval and second pole of the season after winning a pole earlier this year on the New Jersey Motorsports Park road course.

“I didn’t know that we had a car to do it,” Hackenbracht says. “We were pretty quick in practice but (Erik Jones) was really fast, so it sort of surprised me a little bit. I didn’t feel like the lap was very fast but I can’t thank everybody enough for putting together a great car for me.”

Qualifying well is a surprise for Hackenbracht as he is not used to qualifying well.

“My whole career, I’ve never been able to qualify to save my life so getting the pole at Jersey really surprised me,” he says. “To get a pole here, I’m starting to think I’m getting the hang of qualifying. It’s putting the whole package together. We know we can race well and we can qualify well and I hope we can put them both together.”

Hackenbracht was the only drive to break the 17-second mark and is hoping to improve on his fifth-place finish that he scored last year after spinning across the start-finish line.

“We got some momentum off of last week and we’ll see how we do,” the 20-year-old says. “We’ve got a really good race car so hopefully we can get it done.”

Hackenbracht was second in practice earlier in the day. Erik Jones, who led both practices earlier in the day, qualified in the fifth position.

Mason Mitchell would qualify second in only his third ARCA start. He finished 10th and fifth in his first two starts. Chris Buescher and Frank Kimmel were third and fourth.

Brennan Poole, Clint King, Brian Campbell, Justin Lloyd, and Chase Elliott will fill the sixth through 10th starting positions in tonight’s race.

The Berlin ARCA 200 will begin at 8:30 p.m., with live timing and scoring and live audio coverage available at ARCARacing.com.
