INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. Feb. 7, 2012 – There are certain people who go above and beyond to change people’s lives. From protecting our country to serving as leaders in the community, Crown Royal is looking to pay tribute to those who are making a difference. The whisky brand is encouraging adult fans to nominate their personal heroes (21 or older) for naming rights to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, the Crown Royal Presents the “Your Hero’s Name Here”TM 400 at the Brickyard.

The race, to be held on July 29, 2012 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, represents the ultimate celebration of heroes and will mark the sixth time Crown Royal has awarded race naming rights to an adult fan. For the past two years, Crown Royal accepted nominations for military and service members exclusively. Not only has the 2012 race moved to the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but the annual program—now called “Your Hero’s Name Here”—has been expanded to accept entries for all of the unsung heroes who make a difference in their communities, from firefighters and police officers, to first responders and local volunteers.

“The expansion of the nomination category gives adult fans the opportunity to honor all men and women who truly make a difference in their day-to-day lives,” said Yvonne Briese, VP Marketing, DIAGEO North American whisky.  “We’ve been given the opportunity to shine a spotlight on those who unselfishly commit themselves to giving back, and we look forward to seeing one of our heroes kiss the bricks in Indianapolis this summer.”

To nominate a hero for consideration for naming rights to the race, fans are encouraged to visit the Crown Royal Facebook page (Facebook.com/CrownRoyal), where they will be asked to describe a heroic act by the nominee in 100 words or less. Nominations will be accepted until April 30, 2012 and the five finalists will be announced in May. Once the finalists are announced, fans will be provided the chance to cast a vote and determine the winner. The winner will be revealed in a special ceremony leading up to the race.

As part of the prize package, the grand-prize winner will travel to Indianapolis for the race, where he or she will be provided an once-in-a-lifetime experience, which includes waving the green flag to signal the start of the race and delivering the trophy bearing his or her moniker to the race winner in Victory Lane.

The race is the culminating event of the Crown Royal Heroes ProjectTM, an ongoing commitment to recognize everyday heroes and give back to their communities. As part of the project, special commemorative CAMO Crown Royal bag stuffing events were held across the country throughout the fall, resulting in thousands of Crown Royal care packages being sent to American troops overseas, with the help of Packages from Home. The Project benefits the brand’s two national charity partners, Honoring Heroes and Operation Patriot Foundation.

Crown Royal’s ongoing effort to identify deserving individuals kicked off this weekend in Indianapolis, along with various military bases across the country and will continue throughout the entry period.  Former NFL standout Warrick Dunn made a special appearance around the big game to call attention to the program and encourage adult fans to nominate their heroes. Dunn has partnered with the whisky brand to honor his own hero – his late mother – a former police officer who was killed during an off-duty security shift 19 years ago.

NOTES FROM THE NASCAR NATION: THE CARTOON NETWORK TEAMS WITH NASCAR FOR A VERY SPECIAL EVENING

[media-credit name=”Credit: Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images for NASCAR” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]The “Dance Machine?” The “Gnarliest Newb?” That could easily become the new nicknames for NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers Carl Edwards and Trevor Bayne if everything goes according to plan next Monday night on “The Cartoon Network.” The pair of drivers are nominees for  the television network’s second annual “Hall Of Game Awards.”

The “Hall Of Game Awards” has been described as a high energy, off the wall, multi-platform experience that allows the network’s viewers to vote for, and honor, their favorite sports stars, and sports moments, of the year. The show, hosted by NBA basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal, will air on Monday, February 20th, at 7 pm eastern time.

Carl Edwards’ “Dance Machine” nomination is based on his famous ability to perform a back flip from the driver’s window of his car after winning a race. Edwards knows the drill of this awards show very well. He won the “In It To Win It” award last year.

Trevor Bayne’s first “Hall Of Game” nomination is based on his surprise win at last year’s Daytona 500. The award name, “Gnarliest Newb,” is essentially the rookie of the year category for this year’s awards show.

NASCAR’s stars were also well represented in the 2011 inaugural awards show. In addition to Edwards’ win last year, Danica Patrick was the recipient of the “She’s Got Game” award. Kurt and Kyle Busch were nominees in last year’s “Super Siblings” category. NASCAR newcomer Travis Pastrana was a 2011 nominee for the appropriately titled “Alti-Tude” award.

Five time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson will be making a special cameo appearance, on this year’s awards show, to present the “World’s Fastest” award. Johnson, by the way, was a 2011 nominee in the “Dance Machine” category. Seriously? Jimmie the Dance Machine?

But the driver who probably deserves the “Dance Machine” award should be Johnson’s team mate: four time Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon. If you saw his break dancing exhibition, during last December’s fan fest in Las Vegas, then you’ve got to believe that Gordon is going to sweep this category in 2013.

NASCAR racing fans can help Carl Edwards and Trevor Bayne win their category by voting for them online at www.hallofgame.com. The voting is open between now and Friday, February 17th.

Ron Fellows: It’s a Privilege To Be Apart of the Ownership Group

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignleft” width=”262″][/media-credit]During the 2012 racing off-season, it was announced that the ownership of Mosport Raceway had changed hands. Canadian Racer Ron Fellows, along with partners Alan Boughton and Carlo Fidani purchased Mosport from the previous ownership.

“It’s really enjoyable to be a part of it. Mosport has been a big part of my life,” Fellows said last weekend at the Canadian Motorsports Expo. “I went to the first race in 1969 as an 11 year old kid and that’s where I got bitten by the bug to go racing for myself and have had a lot of firsts at Mosport in terms of big wins for me so the place has meant a lot to me. For me, to get an opportunity to be part of the ownership team with Carlo Fidani and Alan Boughton, it’s pretty special.”

The interest to get in the ownership side began while out one day with Boughton and Fidani.

“We were down at my performance driving school just west of Las Vegas and I had the two partners – Carlo Fidani and his two sons and Alan Boughton,” Fellows tells the story. “We were talking about owning a race track and Carlo basically said ‘What about Mosport? I heard it’s for sale’ and I said, ‘I know who to call’. So we got in touch with the previous ownership group and it started from there.”

Fellows went to say that this is a good deal to be involved in as both Boughton and Fidani have business experience to lend to the venture in trying to improve the facility and run it.

Immediately, the ownership group began making changes to the facility to upgrade it to improve it for drivers, fans, media and track staff.

The first change they made was adding a new tunnel above turn nine to therefore improve the infrastructure of the track and allow people to be able to get around easier. They took out what Fellows called the “mouse tunnel” and put in a tunnel wide enough for two tractor trailers to fit through side-by-side.

To improve the experience for the fans, they’ve done grading to improve the sight lines, created some new areas for camping, and there’s a road that connects all the facilities together now so fans don’t have to go on to the public road to get from one end to the other.

There are also plans to put in a new registration centre and a new event centre, which will feature a media centre, timing and scoring and administration.

It was announced at the Canadian Motorsports Expo that Mosport Raceway had formed a partnership with Canadian Tire. The deal marks a long-term partnership between the two parties and will see the track change names, now known at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. The newly named track will host the season opener for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series in May.

“For the Canadian Tire Series to do their season opener at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park is absolutely ideal scenario for us,” Fellows said. “And then having a marketing partner like Canadian Tire, we feel its going to grow Mosport and create a lot more auto racing interest.”

Through his years of racing at Mosport, Fellows has had a lot of accomplishments there. Some of these accomplishments include winning in a Ferrari back in 1997 and first TransAm win in 1989.
