RFR finished second 11 times before sweeping Pocono in ‘05
Roush Fenway Flashback – Roush Fenway scored 11 runner-up finishes before finally breaking into the win column at Pocono Raceway on June 12, 2005. Carl Edwards became the first RFR driver to solve the equation at Pocono, accomplishing the feat in his first-career start at the 2.5-mile track.
CONCORD, N.C. (August 1, 2012) – Roush Fenway has always been strong at Pocono Raceway. The team finished inside the top 10 in eight of its first 10 races at Pocono Raceway; making its debut with a fourth-place finish at the track in 1988. Mark Martin scored the team’s first runner up finish there in July of 1991; it would be the first of 11 second-place runs for RFR at Pocono, until Carl Edwards finally closed the deal in the June race of 2005.
Making his first career start at Pocono, Edwards led 45 of 201 laps in the race, taking the lead for the fourth and final time on lap 187 and going on to win the race under caution.
Ironically, Edwards credited his quick adaption to the ‘Tricky Triangle’ to a most unlikely source; a video game.
“It’s a NASCAR game that you can buy on the shelf,” said the young driver. “I’ve got a steering wheel and a clutch. Coming to a new track and spending time on one of those things really helps.”
Roush Fenway would go on to sweep Pocono in 2005, with Kurt Bush winning the July event on a day that saw RFR lead 157 of 203 laps, while placing three Ford inside the top five of the race.
This weekend Roush Fenway looks for its fifth win at Pocono Raceway. Greg Biffle is RFR’s latest winner at the track, doing the honors in the July event of 2010.
